Cruz, Kasich "Team Up" to Block Trump from Getting to 1,237

Or at least that's the plan -- both candidates are letting it be known that they won't contest some states the other might play better in. Kasich won't play for Indiana (where Cruz is just behind Trump), and Cruz has agreed to stay out of New Mexico and Oregon.

Trump greeted the news in the new, mature "Presidential Mode" he's been showing lately.

I don't know. It seems to show some "deal-making." Don't we need a president who makes the Best Deals, the best?!

In other Trumpocentric news, The Donald has announced he won't be one of those weak-sauce chumps who comes out and congratulates his opponent should he be defeated -- he rules out campaigning for the nominee (if it's not himself) and says in fact that you might not ever see him again.

I'll just leave that lie.

As I've always said, I'll support the republican candidate.

Of course, if there is some ridiculously obscene display of "fuck you, base" at the convention, I may rethink that plan.

I will not, however, be supporting Hillary like you announced you'll do.

Posted by: jwest at April 25, 2016 03:53 PM (Zs4uk)

33 Strange times..... I trust Kasich as far as I can throw him, but it appears it finally dawned on him that his chance to appeal to the RNC delegates to look at his wonderful general election polling numbers (and ignore his losses in all but 1 state) rested on Cruz winning enough states to keep Trump from getting 1,237.

At least IN comes up soon so that Cruz gets the benefits of this strategy first. I hope it succeeds. IN Polling had Cruz close enough already to potentially close strong as voters finally realized Kasich was running a zombie campaign.

I'll reluctantly vote for Trump if he becomes the nominee, but I continue to believe Cruz has a far better chance to beat Hillary in the Fall. He certainly won't be outworked in the campaign!

Then you get to see whether there is really a difference between living under a socialist with unlimited power and a Ryanish GOPe spilt government. Hint 1: They will change the supreme court's composition and come for your guns. Enjoy.

Insurgent candidate who has been labeled a "short-dicked vulgarian who only ever got laid by paying for whores with daddy's money" and who's apparently married to a whore, with a whore daughter daughter, who is a failed businessman, and, my favorite, a "clown-shaped pile or orange shit" is castigated for pledging not to support any other candidate who wins the nomination that no one other than himself can win with any popular support.

Truly this is a nasty idiot of a man with no understanding of the intricacies of modern politics.

His likely opponents, a widely loathed bureaucratic organized crime donna with one foot in the witness stand and the other in the grave and a crusty, senile old socialist who believes that whites owe reparations and gender is a construct, are, without a shred of doubt, shoo-ins for the white house if they have the pleasure of running against this disorganized, disreputable moron that no person and no amount of money has been able to stop thus far.

It doesn't matter because there is no correlation between primary and GE turnout. In fact, it is generally the opposite, competitive primaries bread high turnout, but also tend to make the parties candidate toxic, leading to a major GE loss.

Pollsters no longer enjoy much of a respected position anymore. If Trump becomes the nominee and I wake up the day after the November election to find he got a 45 state landslide, then I'll be convinced I was wrong to think he was a recklessly crazy choice for the nomination.

As things stand now, I don't see him achieving anywhere near that. Instead, it looks like his failure to build a serious campaign infrastructure, lack of developing a donor network (or making plans to raise the $1B he'll need by selling his property), history of saying whatever flits through his head, and knack for alienating at least 50% of the general Republican voters auger poorly for the Fall.

That's correct. And I've never criticized Cruz for doing it. It's formerly anti-GOPe commenters (and writers) crowing about it while ignoring that it bolsters anti-establishment credibility that Trump never should have had that I find objectionable.

Also, that even with the major Colorado PR blunder Cruz still isn't going to win the nomination and isn't guaranteed to stop Trump.

112 Isn't that essentially what Cruz and Kasich are saying? that they won't campaign for Trump? Along with a bunch of other GOP establishment types?

So, how is it terrible when Trump says the same thing?

I don't think Trump is great or "the answer", but I don't get the Trump hatred.

It's not like the GOP itself - including Kasich and Cruz - are going to do anything but what they have done for the last 30 years if somehow Cruz or Kasich wins the WH. They will essentially keep moving the country left, while allowing the left's gains of the last 8 years be solidified, and they'll pass amnesty and increase spending/debt.

this idea that stopping Trump is somehow "conservative" is nonsense. There is no "conservative" in play. Even Cruz will end up with a GOP that is decidedly leftist. So, even if you believe Cruz is as conservative as he claims, you aren't getting any conservative results with Cruz. You'll end up with more of the same.

So, there is no battle between "conservatism" and Trump. It's really a battle between GOP power-brokers and insiders versus Trump. Again, not saying Trump is great, and I don't believe he is conservative, but the other side is as bad or worse. At least with Trump there is some hope, however slight, that we won't end up with amnesty.

Why 8 years? I'm assuming that if Cruz doesn't get the nomination, the Dems will open up their huge stockpile of opposition research to make Trump radioactive, he'll lose badly, and then we'll be looking to have another GOP primary competition in 4 years.

Frankly, if Trump were somehow to win, I suspect his deal-making with the Dems would tick off enough of his supporters that they might be willing to see him get a primary opponent in 4 years.

The last 7 years have been so awful for the nation and another 4 under Hillary so ghastly that we all have to try to avoid it. I actually secretly agree with you.

The disgust with the system is so deep and so wide that Trump will win based on the "protest vote" theory:

Whereas in past elections people who were disgusted with the system would just stay home and throw empty beer cans at the TV, this year they'll go vote for Trump not because they necessarily like him, but as a big "Fuck You!" to the establishment in general. Combine the protest votes with the actual "I like Trump" votes, and you're over 50%.

Trump has lived in the fishbowl for decades. Anything he did would have been news even before he ran for president. If it's out there, it's already been discussed.

Also, if by some chance something else popped up, he's relatively bulletproof. Women? Everyone knows he likes women. Money? Hard to find an angle that hasn't be covered. Unless he's been a wrestling coach or priest, I'm pretty sure his past is OK.

172 @132

It's even simpler than that.

The SCOTUS in its RvW made abortion legal, also, they took on sole custodianship of the issue and effectively removed it from political and democratic consideration.

It would take an amendment to the constitution to change that fact, there simply aren't enough votes to get a constitutional amendment in congress and aren't enough states that would ratify such an amendment at this time and probably any time in the foreseeable future.

So at this time abortion is only an issue to stir up each parties bases nothing more and with the media and the culture as it is, the GOP alsways comes out on the losing end.

Look the GOP couldn't even successfully pass a born alive bill out of congress, two female GOP senators successful controversialized the bill so that it can probably never be taken up again.

The GOP is a fraudulent party and I see no need of feeling bad for trying something different out of desperation.

Once again, that assumes that Trump holds different views than Hillary. I do not think he does. I am not voting for a pro-government, liberal progressive - whether he has a R after his name or not. You are free to hold that against me should Hillary win - but I am not going to take any part in trying to get Trump elected. Should Trump act like a conservative as President (should he win) - I will fully admit I was wrong.

What really surprises me is that we finally have an opportunity to get as close to a true conservative the nomination as we have in a very long time against a very weak opponent - and we are casting it aside for a liberal pro-government progressive. It really is crazy to me.

Don't pander, attack.

Shame the rich liberals. Attack them for voting democrat while they support the teachers and only one out of five black kids in the inner city can read and write. "How do you sleep at night?" 226 "Death throes from the Cruz and Kasich campaigns. Plays right into Trumps narrative of a rigged system. It's shocking they don't realize that.

Also, to the people reciting national polls showing Trump losing to Hillary - you do realize they haven't even started on each other yet and those numbers will shift dramatically,

I'm calling it now - landslide for Trump in the general. Feel free to mock me if I end up being wrong, but I really don't think I will be.
Posted by: Community Organizer at April 25, 2016 04:12 PM (GN7Er)"

It's a risky move, but not necessarily death throes. Personally, I think Cruz had a good chance to win IN even dragging Kasich's zombie carcass. Now, perhaps he has a better chance. Remember, Trump's path to the nomination is very, very narrow and he now realizes if it goes to a 2nd ballot he's toast. He can undoubtedly sweet-talk some unbound delegates into backing him, but these are mostly people he's been attacking as sell-out losers.

People are reacting to general election polls that show Trump has historically high negative ratings. Those are very hard to change, and so far he's not shown much talent at improving them. Hillary is also very unpopular and an eminently beatable candidate with the right nominee.

If Trump becomes the nominee he's going to have to engage in a slugfest to paint her as far more horrible than him. He can't win people over to him, he's just going to have to hope he can make her more hated and depress the turnout enough that he gets 270 electoral votes with his 30-40% of GOP supporters, a chunk of "hold-their-nose" voters like me, and some disaffected dems.

Polls may shift around some, but he's starting out in a huge hole and at nearly 100% name ID, he won't be able to make a new first impression.

I don't want to mock you. You're obviously very impressed by Trump and have great confidence in him. If he gets the nomination, I'll hope that you're right and that he doesn't wind up selling us all out to make deals with Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi.

227 "It's really a vote for Scalia's Supreme Court seat."

So on the Republican side, the three remaining contenders are:

(a) Donald Trump, who cited as an example of a hypothetically "phenomenal" SCOTUS choice, his own sister -- the federal jurist and ardent partial-birth-abortion defender.

(b) Ted Cruz, who swore that John "It's A Tax!" Roberts would be a champion of constitutional conservatism and a perfect fit as Chief Justice.

(c) John Kasich, who said that Obama's selection of "moderate" career liberal Democratic rubber-stamp Merrick Garland was just fine, and should proceed, and that he himself would contemplate nominating Garland to the Court.

I guess I picked the wrong week to quit shooting heroin into my eyeballs.

It's interesting watching the RNC try to stop Trump by any means necessary.

Of course, the time to stop Trump was when he announced and the RNC could say-- no way, you're not running as a Republican, not in OUR party, NO WAY......

...but, you see, at the time, Trump was expected to take away votes FROM the tea party type candidates running....NOT away from the savior of the GOPe and main choice of lobbyists everywhere-- Jeb Bush. Everything backfired on the GOPe and now their desperation is showing.

Crazy times. It would all be funny and stuff, except that our debt--which neither party is serious about--is really going to crush us one day soon.

284 "At some point, a respected pollster is going to come out with national numbers that aren't based on the exact same turnout model as Obama's election."

Some people (like me) tried this in 2012. Turned out the turnout model was worse. So I wouldn't be counting on that model going forward. The pollsters are quite accurately capturing the national feelings about the candidates. Banking on "the polls are wrong" will only lead to embarrassment and heartache.

To be fair, Gallup did release a poll that is very positive for Trump today. It is the first positive poll in the head to head matchup in months. We will see if it is an outlier or signals a trend.

And yes, this is kind of a desperation move by Cruz. He needs to win Indiana and I bet he figured New Mexico and Oregon are pretty much gone for him. So he figures there is no downside to clearing the field there for Kasich.

I don't know what Conservatism means.

SoCons priorities have shifted. They're now worried about getting driven from the public square.

NeoCons failed with Iraq, compounded by the mistakes of Obama/Hillary -- hence our isolationist bent.

Big Business / Chamber of Commerce / Free Trade / Open Borders, now aligned with elements of Big Gov and increasingly with the Cultural Left, has little popular support from right-leaning potential voters.

"Constitutional Conservatism" is a way to say that you want to turn back the clock, but you can't, and it doesn't sell to the broader public.

So we need something. Right-leaning populism can work.

Posted by: JoeF. at April 25, 2016 04:42 PM (zBcW4)"

I'm not sure that's quite true. Personally, much as I loathe the guy, I don't believe Trump is a racist. However, in 1973 the DOJ sued he and his father for supposedly not renting to black Americans. Then there was something in 1996 about not hiring enough black Americans to work in his casinos.

Anyone can sue, so the merits of these cases are up for debate. The problem is that the Dems' opposition research will have a field day making Trump radioactive. He's just given them too much ammo over his 69 year lifespan.

The failure to promptly disavow David Duke of the KKK was an unforced error on Trump's part. I think he was afraid of looking weak or too PC.

Both Trump and Cruz can fight back against the inevitable smears. Neither is likely to just soak up the hits and ignore them. However, Cruz has far less baggage for the Dems to work with.

Sometimes we make the mistake of thinking that people with actual lives think like we do.

They don't.

Of course, they don't know who the Vice President is right now either.

That's OK. We don't want them knowing too much, because then they would make up their own minds instead of just doing what we eventually lead them into doing.

So I was left with nothing. Based on his history, currently behavior, and loud hints of the yuuge shift to.the left he is planning, I have come to realize he is not worth voting for. He will be just as corrupt as Hillary, just that he won't have the good sense to cover it up like she would, he will seek us out to the left.

Irrelevant.

Had this argument a zillion times already.

Love's position on the ticket is not extreme enough either way to dissuade either tea-party types or establishment types from voting for Trump. But her position there as a symbol will open doors for other to to vote for him.

The VP needs to fill in the missing part of the ticket, to be complementary to the candidate, not complimentary. Biden, for example, disagreed with many of Obama's campaign promises. But Biden was picked for strategic reasons, and none of the Obamabots suddenly voted against Obama solely because he chose a crusty old white old-school Democrat as VP. JFK and LBJ did not see eye to eye on most issues either, but JFK needed those Texas and good ol' boy votes.

So, Love is not a pure hardcore tea-prty conservative type. Shrugs. No one will care. To be frank, she's a symbol; she'll be the Harriet Tubman on Trump's $20 bill. The key is to use the Left's identity politics against them.

A Clinton?

This is the way parties have worked since the beginning. Trump and his supporters just want to win, but not do the actual work to win it. Cruz and team are.. They are stealing nothing.

If I may use a war analogy, they are fighting to win. And when Cruz takes some Ground (States), Generalissimo Trump complains about the shape of the battle field. When Cruz takes people (delegates), Generalissimo Trump complains that the bullets are too hard, or the Artillery too effective.

But you cannot complain about the battlefield, or the nature of the war. It is what it is. Everything is just plain whining.

I think you underestimate Trump's celebrity effect. People may not know what it stems from, but the general public has heard the "Lyin' Ted" and "Little Marco" stuff. That's one of the reasons I really dislike Trump. Trashing other candidates on personal stuff instead of policy makes the disunity of the party that much harder to overcome.

Trump wanted to win. Can't fault him for that. He's a naturally aggressive, nasty guy so he went with what is normal to him. He doesn't give a fig for the generally understood rules of the GOP like "Don't speak ill of another Republican", so breaking that 11th Commandment was easy.

Unfortunately, it's left damage everywhere since eventually the other candidates started responding in kind. Cruz kept it a bit more toned down, but calling someone a phony gets at the same idea.

Hillary is unlikely to get Youth turnout, nor Black turnout like Obama. Single Women may not be any higher.

Trump can get higher Non-college White, both men and women, and it's the largest single cohort.

Known Unknowns: Will Hispanic turnout be higher? Can high Hillary negatives suppress turnout among Ds? How will Independents break with two candidates with high unfavorables?

Depending on how you dial these in to an actual electoral map, you can get very different results.

Mia Love isn't right for the VP slot on anyone's ticket yet. She's been a mayor and now a first term Congresswoman. That's not enough seasoning to run as VP. She'd be attacked just as badly as Sarah Palin was in 2008, and it would be very ugly. Give her a few more years to build her national profile, maybe expand her policy chops, and she'll be a great choice.

If the decision is to look for a minority female, look at the governors. Nikki Haley is a better choice. I would have said Susanna Martinez of NM except she had some kind of a run in with the cops recently over getting drunk at a party.

This argument is bogus because the rules ARE working for him. He's winning. He's the only candidate who can win the nomination outright. He lost Colorado, but instead of just giving it up and moving on, he turned that victory into an anchor around Cruz's neck by starting these cries of "rigged!"

You think that's just his id talking? He tarred Cruz with that accusation and now that it's crunch time and Cruz has to keep Trump below 1237 to still have a shot at the nom every option left to him to do it will ring that little "rigged!" bell in the public's mind.

This shit is over. And it wasn't an accident, and it wasn't because everybody's stupid. That's a liberal's excuse.

But keep choking that chicken.

What people don't understand though is that Trump tapped into what the ordinary citizen thinks of politics.
The ordinary citizen believes that the system is rigged, because they don't understand that we are not a Democracy, we are Representative Republic. They believe that it's one person, one vote for everything. Majority wins.

So when they hear that Colorado last summer decided to suspend having the population vote on delegates to the convention and instead, have open delegate calls at caucuses, they believe(and it's not that far fetched) that the party bosses, the ESTABLISHMENT, in Colorado hand picked their own choices for delegates.

I have heard this directly from Democrats who are voting for Trump because they believe the above and believe he will shake up the systems.

340 Trump is funny? Granted I dislike Trump but I'm still able to discern wit and a sense of humor. Trump has neither. If you've ever watched any interview , ( Howard Stern as an example) jokes fly over his head like a U-2 spy plane. Cruz has shown me his comedy chops in his interviews with Carolla and the late night shows. He also impressed me with his off the cuff quote of an entire scene from the Princess Bride. I guess humor is in the ear of the behearer.

All Trump had to do was sell out and make Kasich Veep to get his delegates.

But Cruz was able to work a deal with that. Brilliant ... I guess?

You're right that Trump was very clever to turn his embarrassing failures in CO, WY, etc. into a weapon against Cruz. I looked at it that it spoke well of Cruz that he had built a great grass-roots campaign, fundraised enough to put people on the ground in states way out on the calendar, and effectively won the delegates through the precinct/county/state conventions that those states chose to hold. It didn't occur to me that Trump would succeed in sliming Cruz (with media enabler help) as winning "Voterless victories". Winning by whining is a new concept.

However, this is good practice for the general election. Whichever of them becomes the nominee will need to be able to handle such tactics from the Dems.

Personally, I hope that Cruz wins the nomination and the general election. He's done the most work to prepare for running a successful general election. Trump would be winging it on the cheap. Not an encouraging strategy when dealing with the Clinton machine.

The Constitution is a document. The Constitution isn't a person who cares whether we as a nation follow it or not. It's a set of important words, but it's no Word of God made flesh.

America, on the other hand, is a nation made up of Americans who have been badly served by its current political leadership.

True, and I don't think that would be helpful. In 2008, Sarah Palin had more executive experience than McCain, Biden, or Obama. That was worthless in the election.

In 1988 Mike Dukakis tapped Sen. Lloyd Bentsen to be his running mate. It was seen as a great choice when compared to Bush picking Sen. Dan Quayle. Remember all the jokes Quayle? However, come election day Bush won. People vote for the top of the ticket not the bottom. The best a VP choice can do is to work well with the nominee, be a good attack surrogate, and not do/say/etc. something that hurts the ticket.

Mia Love would be unfairly slimed as a token candidate because she's a black Republican female. We'd spend the campaign trying to defend her and shine a light on the Dems complete willingness to use racism/sexism to get their way.

363 "Trumpkims never post data, analysia, pollas, evidence. They just keep
declaring they have a gut feeling he will win. "

Horseshit. We've been over this.

How Trump can win.

Start with the 2012 Romney electoral map which is mostly solid red.

Add Florida, where Trump has strength. Add two to four states like Ohio, where there are lots of pissed off working class, not all white. Drive up Hillary's negatives, so that people who would never pull an R lever stay home, which is effectively half a vote for Trump. Bernie supporters are very susceptible to this.

Trump can lose the popular vote by 5 million and still be way over 271 electoral votes. Who cares if you lose MA and MD by 30%.

Cruz can't do this. Romney/Ryan/Kasich will do better in states the R's will likely lose, and if R/R/K were to win, what's the point.

He's trying to get elected. I know we don't like to play the game this way, but it's how it's played. Our last two candidates tried to play the electorate differently and got their ass handed to them and the rest of us have gotten to experience their failures.

McCain refused to say anything negative about the clean articulate black man. Romney decided not to bring up our war failures, including Benghazi. Neither of them tried in any way to tap into the short attention span of the average voter in the country.

Trump, whether we wish it were different or not, is getting into voter's basest feelings and anger. He is actually doing what Democrats, do, and that is making everything about feelings and retribution and making it equal, etc. Which is why he is attractive to Democrats, since so many of them base their decisions off of emotions.

At his rallies, he talks to people like he is in their rec room, sucking back a beer while the game is on and talking about what is wrong with this country. His interviews have been more cerebral, and I'm betting that Ben Carson was right. Get him one on one or in a business meeting type setting and he'll be "presidential", i.e. he won't talk on and on in low brow chatter, etc.

But that connection to the voting population is real via his rallies and appearances, because he seems to be like your buddy next door, the one who you also know was smart enough to amass billions in businesses. It's very attractive to the average voter, who believes Trump actually understands them personally.

Yes, very high risk. Better to campaign for reelection to the House. If this goes badly, we'll have every House and Senate candidate fighting hard to win seats and not just the ones in typically competitive areas.

If Trump becomes the nominee, he'll need to look for someone that's currently in office and willing to take a chance on running with him. Probably a governor or senator that isn't up for re-election for at least 2 years. Or someone whose term is ending and isn't running for re-election. Not one of the former competitors he trashed.

If Cruz becomes the nominee, he'll have much more freedom to choose someone unless he has to make a deal with Kasich to get his delegates' support in a 2nd ballot.

Enough said....

Though Lyin' Ted said he should drop out a month ago....now he's teaming up. My how things change. But hey, guess Cruz's principles change along with the state of the race like every other politician's.

The only brain dead folks around in this election are the ones who think Cruz can win more states than Romney.

Posted by: Harry S. Crotum at April 25, 2016 05:51 PM (RvzRN)

398 Let us not leave unnoticed that "Lyin' Ted" told us:

1) That he would make it to 1237 - before NY
2) That the NY result was no big deal - because it was EXPECTED, he said. And then...
3) Declared that neither HE, nor anybody ELSE could get to 1237 - after NY.

So, NY changed nothing, but he magically went from making it to 1237 to NOT being ABLE to make it to 1237.

And guess what? With the new poll results, and looking at the way all the remaining primaries work, my calculations show that Trump can most DEFINITELY get to 1237, without even any unbound delegates. And that's as a PRACTICAL matter, not just a mathematical POSSIBILTY. So that's another Lyin' Ted lie.

The biggest hiccup Trump might run into is if he doesn't get the 30 statewide delegates for winning IN, where he is 7 ahead of Cruz. That lead will probably go up, with this development, and after Trump has a huge day tomorrow.

Well, I don't consider myself a "moonie", but I am a Cruz supporter and I despise Kasich. Last night my poor Mom patiently listened to me ranting about what a miserable jerk Kasich was in putting his delusional ambitions ahead of the nation's interest.

I sincerely hope Cruz will not wind up having to put Kasich on the ticket as his VP choice. However, if Cruz doesn't get the nomination, it's a moot issue. If he does get the nomination and the VP slot is the price of getting Kasich to stop blocking Cruz, well, so be it. Put him on the rubber chicken circuit and leash him to a teleprompter. It mostly worked for Obama in dealing with Biden.

Cruz has proven to be a tough campaigner. Dragging Kasich's zombie campaign along has cost him a number of states. I guess he calculated the risk of not doing well enough in IN was sufficient to justify this strategic alliance.

I'm okay with it since a) Kasich leaves IN now, b) OR & NM are proportional delegate splits so Cruz isn't losing much by not campaigning there, and c) if the May states turn out to be substantially more favorable to Cruz as expected Kasich may well become irrelevant.

Marriage certificate is a document. A marriage is not, it's a relationship between a man and woman.

Rip up the marriage certificate, the marriage is still there.

Rip up the Constitution - America is still there. And as noted, America is unfit for Constitutional governance. But America is still here, and we either address her needs, or accept its decline into warring ethnic states.

The NC Bathrooms

Syrian Refugees

That was just what I can think of.

If you are not seeing what Trump has flip flopped on, its because of willful ignorance, which is the problem with most of his supporters. Too willing to look past the glaring problems with this person.

Problems like:
Lying.
Cheating on his wives.
Sleeping with other men's wives, and bragging about it.
Turning the entire election for the most important office in the country into a reality TV show.
Making said TV show talk about the size of his penis.
His treatment of women.
Not being the great "deal maker" he claims to be.
Not being the planner he claims to be.
Claiming to be an outsider, but then hires insiders, because he has to.
Being a progressive big government liberal.

As I have said before, he is the worst parts of Bill Clinton and Barack Obama rolled into one.

That's wrong. The AP (purposefully?) misquoted him.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) --- In a story April 21 about a presentation made by Donald Trump's chief lieutenants at an RNC meeting in Florida, The Associated Press reported erroneously that Trump aide Paul Manafort said, "You'll see a real different guy." The correct quote is: "You'll see a real different way."

A corrected version of the story is below:

Posted by: andycanuck at April 25, 2016 07:48 PM (jVvcc)

438 Oregon and New Mexico are strong states for Cruz. They're also small, proportional states. So basically Cruz gave Kasich jack shit. Kasich is either incompetent or extremely desperate--probably both.

Oregon: Difference between Cruz campaigning and ceding the state to Kasich is going to be 1 or 2 delegates. Except ground reports have Cruz already in position to lock down the delegates at the convention. So the delegates Cruz is "ceding" are likely to go to him anyway.

New Mexico: Even smaller than Oregon. Only needs 15% of the vote to get delegates, which Cruz can get easily even without campaigning. Again, not campaigning might cost him a delegate or 2. New Mexico is on the same day as California. A single DISTRICT in California is going to be worth more than that.

So Cruz is "working with GOPe uber demon shill Kasich" in the sense that he gave Kasich a little scrap of tattered cloth to help hide his shame. Wow, what a sell out.

443 It's obvious. Cruz just branded himself as being the same kind of loser
as Kasich,"

Not really, as Cruz got the clearance to win Indiana. All upside on the 2nd most critical remaining state (the other is CA).

"and they both just confirmed that the establishment is out to
get him."

Trump's the guy with the insider-lobbying guy, Manafort, and turned his campaign over to a bunch of lobbyists, while Cruz has continued to fight a multi-front war against Trump AND an establishment that has given him almost nothing to fight Trump with. It's as if the stupid establishment decided 'oh, Cruz isn't good enough for us, lets spite our face by cutting off our nose'. The word 'establishment' has stopped meaning anything.

"Trump's a BS-er, but he's right - this really IS an act of
desperation, and it's too little too late."

It's more calculation than desperation, but they have to stop Trump in Indiana or they both lose. So good strategy.

If Kasich really wanted to stop Trump he would QUIT NOW, but the fool can't seem to get away from the fantasy that running 4th in a 3-man race is a ticket to victory.
So Cruz makes the best of the situation, make Kasich
be less annoying and harmful, and Kasich banging around in proportional
Oregon and NM keeps his burn rate down while pretending to have a chance.

Too little too late? Maybe. We'll see in a week. Trump continues to enjoy media bias in his favor to pump his bogus narratives to them, so that any standard campaign activity by Cruz is slandered as 'rigged' or crooked.

452 "Form of... A weasel who went to law school!"

"Dammit, Ted! Pick something else for a change."

"I have made my selection, as is my right, under the constitution, if you would please do likewise..."

"Alright, fine. Shape of... A damp, lukewarm dishrag."

"Gosh darn it, John. I don't see how 'wiping the orange off him' gives either of us a viable path to 1237."

"Look, I napped through the briefing, but I think it's got something to do with earth's yellow sun. Can we just try it?"

"Very well, let's go. Marco, have you got the bucket?"

"Hee hee hee hee hee!"

453 How dare Trump use his bully pulpit and front-runner status to benefit his campaign and cut his opponents off at the knees! A true winner would draw no attention to things that would get him more sympathy and votes! If you say you're good at making backroom deals, then by golly you have to WIN with backroom deals even if you're demonstrably a popular candidate whose tweets are ten times as effective as anyone's talking points!

454 Golden 112- "GOP power brokers and insiders versus
Trump"? Are you kidding? Christie endorsed him, Manafort is running the
campaign. You can't get more establishment then that. In terms ms of
conservatism , look at who Donnie has given money to for the last 20
years and then tell me with a straight face he's a real conservative

re read my comment. I never said Trump was a conservative. In fact, I said none of them are conservative. That was my whole point. It was quite clearly made. It was the thesis of my comment. So, your argument that I am defending him as a "real conservative" is idiotic. And, I'm not saying Trump has no connections with the GOP establishment. But, the vast majority of the establishment (the "nevertrump" people) fear him not because he isn't conservative (after all, neither are they), but because they imagine he threatens their comfortable uni-party power structure. Now, whether he actually does threaten it or not is an open question. But, this idea that "nevertrump" people are just too damn principled to vote for trump are ridiculous and belied by 30+ years of actions and statements.the idea that Trump is "too vulgar" is also laughable. these people kiss democrat ass, even after dems accuse them of lynching blacks, killing the elderly, etc.
So, they aren't against trump because of conservatism nor because of "civility". Their past histories show those claims to be complete and utter b.s. So, why are they so against Trump?
Again, not claiming Trump is conservative or a savior or anything else (please read this statement as you missed it last time), instead I'm saying the nevertrump contingent is completely full of shit. They (the pundits/politicians, etc. - not the average voters) have no principles and don't care about decorum, they only care about getting and maintaining power. So, the obvious answer as to why they dislike Trump so much is that they believe (rightly or wrongly) that his candidacy somehow threatens their position/power/access.
