So On Game of Thrones Female Characters Poisoned a Child, Butchered a Teenager, and Stabbed an Unarmed Man, and the Social Left Applauds: It Was "Empowering"

Ah, I'm over Game of Thrones. I barely watched it last night.

In what appears to be a big departure from the book, a character was killed. This character had been one of the only interesting parts of the dreadful, dreary, interminably long sequences away from the real characters, as it kept being hinted that his passivity and weakness were all a big ruse (as Archer would say), and that he was in fact planning something very strong, very tough (as Donald Trump would say).

I have to imagine that George R. R. Martin didn't put us through 400 pages of boring crap with this guy as the only point of minor interest just to kill him.

Anyway, the show was boring. It's been boring for a while. I don't know the show will bother with the R+L=J reveal, or if it's been agreed that the show will depart far from the books, so that Martin is left his own story to tell (when he eventually completes the series, which I doubt he ever will). The R+L=J thing is the only thing I was interested in for years, and now I'm not even all that interested in that.

Anyway, on to today's stupid justice warrioring. Female characters poisoned a 12 or 14 year old girl, stuck a spear through a teenaged boy's head when he wasn't looking, and then brutally stabbed an unarmed man (as well as sneak-stabbed an armed man who was caught by surprise by the murder).

"Empowering!" declares this stupid Women Can Do No Wrong As Long As They Do For Themselves site.

I'm censoring a bit of this to not be more spoilery than I need to be.

[Female Character] Takes Over [High Position] On 'Game Of Thrones' & It's An Empowering Move

KELLY SCHREMPH

Say what you will about how cruelly this series can treat their female characters, but during Sunday night's Season 6 premiere, [Female Child Murderer] took a powerful stand on Game of Thrones. Tired of watching in the shadows as the men all around her use their power in terrible ways, [Female Child Murderer] decided to take over [High Position] for herself...

And, while the act itself was both shocking and impressive, her speech was what proved that her leadership could make for a nice change.

While under a man's rule, women have been abused and raped by men without retribution. But, all of that is about to change now that she's in charge. "Your [close relation] is weak just like you, and weak men will never rule [Place] again," she said as she killed him. [Multiple Child Murderess] proved to us last season that she was a force to be reckoned with when she made the bold move of killing [a child].

It was a female child, by the way. I wonder if that made it less empowering, or more empowering. I wonder if the female child was herself empowered by being thought of as important enough to murder.

That was done when she had very little power, so imagine what she will be capable of now...

On the whole, this is a very amazing twist for her character's storyline. Female leaders are kind of awesome. (Looking at you, Dany!) And I am certainly all about female empowerment on this show...

By the way, all of the murdered characters were morally good. The child was praised as the best child someone had ever known, the teenaged boy was not shown doing anything untoward, and the adult man's sin was being too interested in peace and reconciliation.

But, empowering to murder them all anyway!

Years back, the Onion wrote a parody: Women Now Empowered By Everything a Woman Does.

Apparently murder -- including multiple child murders -- now joins that list of empowering things an empowered woman may empower herself by.

It occurs to me that this plot twist, which as I've said I doubt is part of Martin's actual storyline, may have added specifically to appease the Social Justice Warriors, Maenad Auxilliaries, who've complained that women were abused on the show. (Not seeming to notice that Reek has been tortured for years and had his penis cut off, or that every male Stark has been murdered.)

This might have been done specifically to shut the Maenads up and make them feel "empowered" by "empowered" fictitious characters murdering people in an "empowering" fashion.

If so, mission accomplished! The brain-dead, bubblegum-headed amoral savages of the social left approve!

Update: It's not a new trope, of course: SJWs are uncreative people, endlessly derivative, who merely re-write what has gone before thousands of times.

Via Twitter, @aposticmark informs me that Shakespearean murderess Lady Macbeth has been declared to be quite empowered herself.

But Women Are Empowered by Everything, Don't You See?

47 I'm so old I remember when women were supposedly superior because they weren't usually mass murderers, etc.
Posted by: Unfettered Power

When women don't murder, they are empowered; when they murder, they are super-empowered.

Every day is a festivus of empowerment!

Question: Ramsay Snow murders a lot of people, and tortures them, and rapes them.

Is he also empowered? Or is it only women who are empowered by cruel behavior?

Would he be empowered, if not for the rape? Would he be empowered if he raped, but raped men instead?

Questions, questions!

Why Is This Dark "Empowering" Murder Fantasy Okay for Women, But Not Okay for Dudes in Video Games? That's my own question, but Alec Leamas makes a similar point:

I can't imagine too many men admitting to the surge of power for manliness felt by the caprice and cruelty of Joffrey or Ramsay Bolton.

I suppose feminism really is a dark expression of Oedipal revenge fantasies and the weakling's desire to wield power for its own sake and for self-aggrandizement.

I'm just wondering about the confused psyche that praises fantasized wanton cruelty and killing as essential to the cause of being a woman while needing safe spaces and protection from college boys after two glasses of Chardonnay in the other world that doesn't have dragons.

58 I agree that the show is in decline (probably because its now deeply in the territory of the mediocre books in the cycle).

It seems to me that the story has trended toward "empowering" those without power -- all of the patriarchs of the major families are dead; most of the Starks are dead, etc.

In the power vacuum creeps the "disenfranchised":

1) Dany -- the entitled brat who will probably end up winning it all because girl power.

2) Cersei -- the girl who was overlooked by her father, sent into a bad marriage, but has managed to cling to her power.

3) Margery -- the girl who tries to use "traditional" feminine power (e.g., seduction and manipulation of her arranged marriage husbands) to grow her own power. See also the "Queen of Thorns", the matriarch of the Tyrell family.

4) Sansa - the poor abused Sansa, who will have to grow into power one day, if only to justify the horrid pattern of her abuse.

5) Arya -- the wily tomboy girl who is going to become death incarnate.

6) Bran -- the crippled boy, who will somehow end up wielding magic powers.

7) Yara -- the girl who will inherit instead of her brother.

Tyrion -- the disfigured dwarf who will be placed in a situation where he can earn renown based on merit.

9) Brienne -- the knight-girl who will redeem her honor.

10) Jaime -- the villain who became disabled (coincidentally at a time where the author wanted the readership to like him more).

11) Jon -- disabled through bastardy.

The whole thing starts to read as a bad SJW rant after awhile. I'm not giving up on it entirely, but I'm fully expecting the end to be somewhat disappointing.

Female nudity - which is actually kind of meh - must be celebrated because [lesson in female empowerment]. Both of these things are there primarily to teach us retahds a lesson. The lesson-teaching is more important than the story-telling and it shows. If you just had a kickass female villain, one that the viewers weren't obligated to sympathize with, that would be welcome. If you had some nudity that was actually organic to the narrative and not just there to shock the proleprudes, that would be fine, too. The delusion that there's supposedly this enormous Prude Army keeping True Artists from Making Meaningful Entertainment is kind of sad at this point.

131 Actually, I think they're studiously ignoring straight conversation of man-persons committing murders and rapes because they *do* believe that's empowering or can be. In a sense. The central conceit of "rape culture" dogma is that by somehow encouraging people on the fringes to commit rapes the whole society of men benefits. So yes, empowerment. But evil. Evilpowerment.

They're ignoring that that happens on the show because they believe by controlling what is talked about and how they control what reality is. Insomuch as it sneaks out that a guy did do a thing, they can call it a condemnation of rape culture. Because the man-person is bad, see. When they say that someone did a Bad Thing and is Bad or ignore said Bad Thing entirely, it is so, because they say so. When the poor oppressed class do a Bad Thing it is a Good Thing, because they are oppressed, and saying so makes it so.

150 I think it's safe to assume at this point that the show will be dramatically different from the books, with the story in Dorne being one of the most butchered. The show fails to lay a lot of the groundwork for the end game stuff, and they cut out far too many characters, character motivations, and plotlines to keep the scope of the cast and story more manageable. And they're divvying up necessary story lines among different characters (usually characters the audience already is pretty familiar with) who in most cases weren't even involved in those story lines. I understand the need to make the books more manageable, but the show's producers have thrown away so many of the prerequisites for a good story in the process and there's a resulting mess that doesn't make a whole lot of sense or do a good job developing characters. Frankly, I think almost everything after season 1 has been pretty much garbage, with only the occasional well-executed moment, like the red wedding.

With regard to the books, I think there's still reason to hold out hope that there are cool things in store for Prince Doran, the character they killed off pointlessly on the show. Check out this fan theory for a well-supported analysis of what his master plan is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TBfdd_xNVo . It makes book 4 (the most tedious and boring book in the series) seem way more interesting in retrospect.

195 While under a man's rule, women have been abused and raped by men without retribution. But, all of that is about to change now that she's in charge. "Your [close relation] is weak just like you, and weak men will never rule [Place] again," she said as she killed him. [Multiple Child Murderess] proved to us last season that she was a force to be reckoned with when she made the bold move of killing [a child].

******

No one point out to this writer that the woman in question didn't stage her rebellion / coup of the Dornish throne because she wanted to empower women over their oppressive male patriarchy.

Her coup is being done, in large part, because she wants revenge against the Lannisters / Baratheon dynasty for the killing of her MALE lover.

Plus a bunch of other, older blood grievances that the Tyrells had against the Lannisters for their part in the slaughter of certain family members.

I guess this is all very EMPOWERING, but it's doesn't actually fit within their feminist narrative.

208 >>It occurs to me that this plot twist, which as I've said I doubt is part of Martin's actual storyline, may have added specifically to appease the Social Justice Warriors, Maenad Auxilliaries, who've complained that women were abused on the show. (Not seeming to notice that Reek has been tortured for years and had his penis cut off, or that every male Stark has been murdered.)

1) You'll never hear me arguing that any of Theon's arc was necessary to show, especially him being castrated (something that was only hinted at in the books)
2) Not every Stark male has been murdered

That said, the show does treat female characters horribly, even more horribly than they're treated in the books. D&D are obsessed with sexual violence. They made a consensual sexual encounter between Cersei and Jaime into rape for literally no reason. They had Meera Reed almost raped when nothing like that happens in the books. They transferred Jeyne Poole's abusive storyline onto Sansa when it made no sense, just because they thought it would work better with the audience. Etc, etc.

244 The Atlantic's TV writers (and yeah, wtf the Atlantic has TV writers, the bobo class is really obsessed with TV right now for people who would have hidden their TV's in cabinets 30 years ago) were much less impressed with the Sand Snakes murderin' ways, and said it was a let-down after being sold on the idea that they would be strong female characters. So over there, at least, butchery isn't confused with strength just yet.

IIRC, Doran had a nice little plot going on w/r/t the Targaryans that involved his son, who isn't even in Dorne in the book. So yeah, pretty big divergence, maybe indication that the Dornish/Targaryan alliance isn't going to work out in the books if the plotline can be killed off this casually on TV. Sad to see Doran go, since the actor playing him is very good and I liked his scenes.

Did you ever see the XKCD zombie movie treatment?

The zombies lasted all of about five minutes (about how long it took one of the two leads to run to the truck and get the shotgun), while the other one kept the door closed to the room with the zombies.

The remaining 115 minutes was a rom-com.

253 This is a golden age of home entertainment.

Am I concerned that internal forces at HBO are twisting the writers to empower women more on GoT? Not really.

We've had 5 seasons of using them, so give the girls a few years of getting back.

Even Trixy on "Deadwood" got a few licks in.

But it's boring now, and not done from a story perspective but from a propaganda "grrl power" perspective. It's shoehorning a SJW ideal into a setting where it really doesn't make a lot of sense, done for its own sake, and in such a way that the only thing that differentiates assholishness from empowerment is a set of breasts.

It's not even all that new anymore. Joss Whedon made a career out of doing this crap.

260 The Dorne story line in the TV show never worked well, except for the one Sand Snake gratuitously showing her bodacious rack. Dorne characters are thinly drawn and even silly.

There are two many dispersed story lines going on right now, some better than the others, so it's hard to make progress.

Also, is it just me or are there fewer gratuitous boob shots lately, no t counting last night's Red Lady ending.

268 I still like GoT, although the quality has definitely gone down hill.

The basic theme seems to be that no one's hands are ever clean in politics. The ones who try to be (Ned, Robb, etc) end up dying at the hands of those who are willing to fight dirty. This doesn't mean that you can't strive to do good, but only that you have to understand that the world you live in isn't pretty. Hence Varys' comments in the previous seasons about Tyrion and Daenerys. Tyrion has suffered abuse all his life based on his dwarfism, so he has empathy for the poor and downtrodden, and has the kind of mind where he can survive in the cutthroat world of the Seven Kingdoms long enough to do some good. Daenerys wants to ends slavery, but she's learning the hard way that when you upset the old order you make enemies.

I didn't see the murders in the recent episode as empowering. They were stupid. A group of women who are too stupid and short-sighted to see the dangers that their country faces, and too arrogant about their own capabilities.

276 I'm surprised that people would try to interpret this show through the lense of political commentary. It's a show where, more than anything, the characters act according to their own interests and personalities. The women who murdered Prince Martell were pissed at how he was running things and wanted to take over. They didn't care about empowering women. They cared about fighting the crown and didn't feel like he was doing enough to avenge their family.

It might be a departure from the book, but who cares? The show didn't focus on his storyline very long so we aren't particularly invested in him. This sets up Dorn as about to go to war with the Lannisters, which seems like a hopeless cause considering how many allies they have now. Anyways I thought it was a good episode and don't care about what SJWs find empowering or irritating. It's one of the few shows on TV where I don't feel like every plot line is trying to manipulate me and instead they are just trying to tell a story.

-But only if you agree with that obvious differential.
Otherwise,
by all means lump Trump and all he has accomplished with the Monster

Incidentally, due to your influence from years ago I have been
listening to a flood of Ween. [I don't know exactly: but you pointed out

"Push the little daisy's". And a couple years after that I started to

...and then some.

Glad that they seem to be (currently) reunited.
Sorry that either of them had/have an drug/alcohol problem.

Unfortunately, most rock/pop bands have had that very serious problem.
[Sadly and / sickly it's almost like a very bad sacrifice to us, the
talentless listeners who give over our tiny {seemingly insignificant}
amounts of money in near mindless tithes.

But that doesn't diminish their art. - And so it especially is with WEEN.

288 If GRR Martin offends the SJW for any reason, the new claim will be that he negatively portrayed LGBTQ through the Dornish power struggle.

The lady who did the killing is a bisexual, with a couple lesbians, who had an sexual relationship with her brother. Making her into an evil murderer who starts wars just reinforces negative LGBTQ stereotypes.

289 Women have one super-power : they can bring a new human life into the world. That they have been told to kill that life, to snuff it out, takes away that one super-power.

When men can bear children after nourishing them inside their bodies for nine months, then we'll talk "empowerment."

The power to kill is on the level of being "Aqua Man."

292 The feminists crowing about it being "empowering" isn't the worst part.

Check out Tyler O'Neil at PJMedia complaining that it isn't "properly" empowering because the female characters that did it haven't been "properly" developed, with "empowering" backstories, like rape-victim-turned-queen Daenarys, or war-starting, family-destroying Catelyn Stark, or even sympathetic nude-walking, incestuous, murderous Cersei Lannister. (Not to mention otherwise completely irrelevant, but finally in the right place at the right time Brienne of Tarth.)

People on both sides are overeager to portray this show as some transcendent accomplishment, rather than as Ian MacShane put it, just " and dragons".
