Reposting: The Vicious Cycle of Third-Party Punishment

Note: I wrote this Thursday or Friday, but I included with it more topical news which seemed to be what people talked about. I'm reposting this without the topical hook so the main point gets noticed.

That doesn't mean you have to talk about this -- this is officially an open thread. I just would like to give the broader point a second exposure.

...

I've been talking about this for about two years now, I think -- we did a podcast on the subject with John Sexton (another convert to the cause after I recommended Trial by Fury to him).

Vox now Voxspalains altruistic punishment, which they call "third party punishment."

The two terms describe the same phenomenon, which is that people take pleasure in punishing people for wronging others.

That's the third-party part, or the "altruistic" part -- apes punish other apes for wronging themselves, but apes don't care if you harm another ape.

Humans -- possibly uniquely -- do.

This is an altruistic impulse and it underlies our sense of fairness in society generally.

But there is a dark side to it. Because humans are hard-wired to really, really enjoy punishing others for their alleged sins against other people -- we derive actual pleasure from it; it's that feeling of angry righteous fury political partisans feel -- and sometimes we go deliberately looking for slights to others, which could be entirely imaginary, to righteously punish.

One point the Vox article makes which I haven't made myself is that people are willing to use more vicious punishments when defending the alleged wrongs inflicted on others than they are to avenge wrongs perpetrated on themselves.

This may be because people are naturally more tough than they credit others with being.

And so if you say "You're an asshole" to someone, he just shrugs it off -- who cares?

But if you say "You're an asshole" to one of his designated victim cohorts he is honor-bound to defend and avenge, he assumes a bunch of things about his victim cohort -- that they're weak; that they're excessively sensitive and can be wounded by trivial things; and that they are utterly incapable of standing up for themselves -- and permits himself to engage in cruelty he would never consider indulging in on his own behalf to avenge the wronged third party.

This could be why furious liberals are so furious and nasty about the Washington Redskins team name, but if you ask the actual Indians about it, they shrug and say "What's the big deal? Isn't it a compliment?" and actually name their own high school teams the "Redskins" and other Indian-themed names.

But when you're coming in to defend these Indians -- well, you assume a level of offense on their behalf that really doesn't exist, then you assume they're weak and need a White Knight (usually an actual caucasian White Knight, actually) and you get nastier defending the Poor Indians than you'd ever be defending anyone apart from your own children.

And that's why the internet is so terrible.

This isn't an impulse to be completely suppressed -- as I said, it is this sense of what is "fair" to others that informs the most rudimentary sense of morality and ethics people feel. (Feel, not think.)

Third-party or altruistic punishment is the neurobiological impulse at the root of morality itself.

But it should be restrained. And people need to think deeply: Are these poor souls are being so cruel in defending really so weak that they cannot defend themselves? Are they really this sensitive that they are wounded and scarred by the most trivial verbal gaffe?

Is the imagined cruelty one seeks to avenge actually greater than the deliberate and calculated cruelty the avenger seeks to visit upon the supposed original wrongdoer?

Is the cruelty one is about to deliberately add to the world really likely to make the world a less cruel place? Or just a crueler one?

And one needs to ask -- am I really doing this to save my poor victim cohort, or am I just doing it because cruelty feels good and this is the only socially-permissible outlet for behaving cruelly?

It's this cycle -- imagining a minor slight to be a major one, then escalating this minor alleged cruelty into a major bout of intentional, coordinated group cruelty (group shaming, viral punishment, etc.) -- that is turning the internet, and the society that it shapes, into a never-ending Vicious Circle.

It's time to start letting some things go, and start letting the alleged third-party victims maybe do some complaining and self-defending first before the world jumps in to make every minor squabble a major cultural battle.

Open Thread. Had insomnia. Crazy tired.

I suspect that's because (assuming social media is involved) the punishers don't know the punished and feel free to imagine they the worst possible sort.

Don't get me wrong, Hastert should be "enjoying" the companionship of the wrestling team in Cell Block C (seriously, how is there a statute of limitations on what he "allegedly" did?)... but that this doesn't get laughed out of court shows how completely insane the system is.

40 That's the third-party part, or the "altruistic" part -- apes punish other apes for wronging themselves, but apes don't care if you harm another ape.

Altruism really isn't about third parties, though. Altruism is more about selflessness.

As I said in the earlier thread on this, this "altruistic punishment" is really just a subset of "sadism".

50 "ASS" gets 3.5 Stars out of 4.

Starring Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, Jack Black and Reese Witherspoon, "ASS" is much more than your averaged Judd Apatow hipster teen rom-com. With a soundtrack by Kanye (recorded entirely underwater in the Bay of Biscayne), a thrilling Jack Black in the action-hero role he's always been destined for, and Reese Witherspoon as a sharecropper's Great-Great-Great-Great Granddaughter looking to "shake it" in the Big City, this movie pushed all my buttons! Well-paced in general, there is an overlong lull in the middle, during which Kim Kardashian attempts to make macaroni and cheese, but even that scene is redeemed by the appearance of Jack Black's character, proudly toting the dolphin he'd slain at the County Fair to take home the blue ribbon.

*Spoiler Alert
Reese Witherspoon is a white woman!

52 Ace,

I think you're missing part of "maintaining of status" in the defending others part of third party punishment-

Suppose I call you a dickweed and you get angry. So angry that you start stalking me on Facebook and twitter and you're trying to get everyone to heap abuse on me because I called you a dickweed.

Well.....you just look insane. Completely unhinged.

all that happened was you got called a dickweed...Dude, get over it.

But,

say I call some black guy a dickweed. Suddenly, that frees you up to unleash all your inner insanity because now you're fighting "racism".

And "fighting racism" is a social good so you are justified in doing whatever it takes.

Basically, you are dealing with people who are already unhinged- angry at this or that in their lives- Melissa Click is a good example- she has to be unhappy that she looks like a low budget, poorly assembled muppet and boy, the rest of us will pay.

This give them a freebie, a target to unleash all of this crazy bitterness and still elevate or at least maintain their social status.

75 And here's where I look like an unredeemable nerd-

I've been recently plowing thru the Naruto Shippuden episodes-

and in a way the whole sequence of with Pein and beyond is a fairly sophisticated meditation on defending those you love and revenge.

Naruto's solution is something I think we need to apply in our current situation with Democrats and Obamoids.

His solution to the old friend who is hellbent on destroying the village in which he lives and the people in that village-

is to fight him as hard as he can and stop him until the old friend recognizes what is in Naruto's heart.

The Democrats are hellbent on destroying America and it's people.

The proper action we must take is fighting them as hard as we can and frustrating their weird dreams of revenge.

We must block them until they finally recognize us for who we are and what is in our hearts.

and we must do this without malice but with firm and unyielding resolve.

Today's GOP refuses to fight and talks of cooperation (bipartisanism) without first standing on their principles and forcing a recognition of who they are and what the want and represent.

This is a recipe for failure and anger.

We are seeing the first part of this in this election.

It will only get worse until we find those who will represent us in gov't and fight the Dims until they have to recognize us and who we are.

101 The other night I was going on about issues with closing the deal on interviews. Got laid off end of October and have been looking since - have had a ton of interviews but just haven't been closing the deal. Suspected cause: middle aged white guy in tech world.

But I had a phone interview today that I got some real feedback on, and its starting to make some sense.

Turns out that that think about people pulling resumes for buzzwords? Totally true - but they aren't reading them, or if they are, they just aren't comprehending what is there. So my resume is chock full of buzzwords that are getting me interviews.

But apparently the stuff I say about my background and experience that I think obviously covers what they are asking just isn't obvious. I get it, because I did it. But they either aren't listening or you have to say things in exactly the way they are expecting to hear it, or you didn't say it.

Today, the HR recruiter asked me whether I had experience dealing with customers (note, on my resume, three different instances of building a service desk for customer service) and so I essentially answered that, figuring well she just didn't read it.

But no, she says, do you have experience dealing with customers?

Total eye opener. I had just told her that I had, but she didn't get that from what I said. I told her, yes, I have LOTS of experience dealing with customers, and then she was like "okay, good."

This helps explain what feedback I am getting from time to time.

So at least. today, the HR person knew enough that there was something in my resume that was a good fit - but she had to hear the answer to her question and she took the time to ask what was unclear to her.

So the mission is make the obvious obvious. I wouldn't have expected that, but gotta do what I gotta do.

And, btw, after going through the job requirement as posted and telling her explicitly where I had every single thing they asked for, she is getting me to an interview with tech staff tomorrow am.

I am not going to assume that he gets it either.

Prayers, luck, whatever you guys can offer.

Thanks in advance.

122 @113 vm the weird part is that if I get on the phone with an HR recruiter - i.e. they work for the company that the position is at, not these headhunter recruiters - I have about 95% conversion rate at that level. I get word that they are sending me to the hiring manager.

At that point, I have had a handful of hiring managers that get word to me that they will be interviewing me - and then they don't - or, I get to that interview, and the deal doesn't close - even if that interview goes super well. (Example - go through interview, guy says he has interviewed six candidates and I am the only one who has passed his muster, that we go to next steps and it will take about 2 weeks to get through that. Then guy totally goes dark and disappears for 6 weeks. And then says, oh, we have a new VP looks like it will be 2 months before I know what our internal alignment will look like....) Or I get some kind of weird feedback from the hiring manager, or no feedback, and the process just stops.

But from the weird feedback, the not making the obvious obvious makes a lot of sense. When I hear that I am not technical enough (which I can guarantee is not the case) or they will say I didn't have experience in something I clearly do.....

Starting to make sense.

So tomorrow, I am going to make sure that I answer back exactly what is asked - like if the question is "do you have experience with customers" I will answer, first, yes, I have a lot of experience with customers.

Posted by: blaster at April 25, 2016 09:29 PM (2Ocf1)

131 I once thought the Redskins' team nickname was kinda-sorta in bad taste. I didn't care enough to do anything about it, apart from joking about some similar possibilities for team names based on other ethnotypes (which I won't repeat here, out of respect for Ace's desire not to have folks tossing around racial slurs here). "They have the right to name their team whatever they want, and I have the right to make fun of them for it," was my basic stance on the issue.

But, in recent years, I've learned the origin of the team name (they were named in honor of a University of Washington football coach whose nickname was "The Redskin"), and I saw a poll of American Indians that showed that 90% of them approved of the Redskins name.

Well! I'm not about to argue with 90% of my own primary ethnic group over something I only cared about enough to crack jokes about it.

Also, the folks demanding that the team change its name are, well, just horrible people in general, when you get right down to it.

So, yeah, I am now 100% in favor of that Redskins nickname, and I hope it never changes.

147 The GOP is very good at failure theater. One of the things that frustrated me a lot throughout history was that they would "stand on principle" long enough to take maximum damage for whatever position it was that they were standing for, and once no more negatives could be obtained from taking that position, they abandon it and cave - so then they get negatives for caving.

Which, if it happened once, okay. But after a while, you just look at it and go "can't anybody here play this game?"

Islamic militants in the Philippines have executed a Canadian hostage, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday, after the Filipino authorities said they had found the head of a foreign man on a remote island.

"I'm outraged by the news that a Canadian citizen, John Ridsdel, held hostage in the Philippines since September 21, 2015, has been killed at the hands of his captors," Trudeau said.

"This was an act of cold-blooded murder and responsibility rests with the terrorist group who took him hostage."

Ridsdel, fellow Canadian tourist Robert Hall, Hall's girlfriend Filipina Marites Flor, and Norwegian resort manager Kjartan Sekkingstad were kidnapped seven months ago from yachts at a marina near the major city of Davao, more than 500 kilometers (300 miles) from Jolo.

Paul talks about putting away childish things because one is no longer a child.

CS Lewis talks about people avoiding children's books because they want to appear adult; the concern over an adult appearance is a childish attitude. (An adult simply is; no need for appearance)

327 I don't know that we are "hard-wired" for 3rd party punishment. Or, if we are hard-wired for that trait, then it is a very localized phenomenon or a phenomenon that can be tapped into and made to "feel" local. It has got to be as close as a grenade for us to care, or for the "wiring" function to kick in. I think about how little we punish if a German gasses a Jew, or if a Japanese rapes a city full of Chinese, or if an Arab blows up a bus full of Britons. It's certainly a politically useful to realize that if we can make people "feel" as though they are within range of the grenade fragments, then they should react as though they were really within range of the outrage. It's just manipulation of weak emotional thinking, not wiring in a general sense, that is being accessed in most cases, I believe.

p.s. come swiftly asteroids.
