26 Stupid. The FBI looked at one phone the San Bernardino terrorists used (which belonged to the county) and determined that the couple had never used encryption?

"According to CNN, the iPhone did not contain evidence that the couple had contacts with other ISIS supporters and that they did not use encrypted communications during the 18-minute gap the FBI was worried about."

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

27 As far as the Medicaid expansions go here in Kentucky fully 25% of the State's population is on either Medicare or Medicaid thanks to the former Dem Governor buying into the expansion. Bevin ran on cutting that off and is apparently keeping his promise. He sent a letter to HHS telling them sorry but we can't afford it and are pulling out.

There is simply no way we can afford to pay 20% of the cost Medicaid for over 1 million people.

Posted by: Dave at Buffalo Roam at April 20, 2016 08:25 AM (y7bt9)

33 Honestly, some people need to stop the bed-wetting.

Compared to the 2008 NY Primary, Hillary got about the exact same number last night. Funny part? Sanders pulled almost the same number as Obama did in NY that year. Overall, turnout with 2008 for Democrats was just about flat.

Republicans however, were up over 28% in turnout compared to 2008. They crushed the turnout numbers for 2012. Also, Trump beat McCain's number of votes in 2008 by about 64%. He crushed Romney's numbers even further.

So overall for NY, last night was the best turnout for Republicans in recent memory and the winner had the best numbers we've seen in some time.

Make of it what you want, but if we can keep up turnout across the states I see it as a net positive.

Now I khave known some very fine people who have not been cured of cancer and might not have been cured had they been well enough to do random acts of kindness. I will say, however in a different situation, that if you are feeling down and depressed (as long as it's not a type of severe depression that makes you unable to get out of bed) doing good deeds and relating to people in a caring way is one of the best ways to get you out a funk-because you're not so internally focused.

I agree Seamus. These businesses probably will see this as just another shake-down and try to pay them off, but this is so sinister I don't think that's the approach. The incremental approach won't work here either, fighting back by inches.

Overwhelming force applied disproportionately would be my suggestion: pick one of these scumbags, find their guilty secret and go nuclear. Then move to the next one. Make it really personal and really thorough. Don't stop, even if they give up.

Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian at April 20, 2016 08:39 AM (voOPb)

54 I have been thinking about this. Maybe this is stating the obvious.

Why don't ostensibly conservative candidates preach conservatism ? Why doesn't conservatism 'sell'?
Why does the concept of an outsider excite conservatives so much?

Because real Constitutional conservatism negates the existence of a permanent , elite political class and the FSA underclass. Years of political pandering to both of these groups have made them indispensable in winning almost any elected office.

Both of these groups would weaken and die under an actual implementation of Constitutionalism. And they know it.

Perhaps the most pathetic part of the whole Global Warming fanaticism is that even if they were correct AND they manage to impose regulations that cut emissions, say 50% (and strangle the American economy) it would still have no impact whatsoever. India, China and others will pick up the slack and CO2 emission will probably increase as a result. They just barely pay lip service to the Global Warming Cultists who are blinded by PC ideology and can only punish Western nations with their insanity. All third world/emerging economies get a pass because racism, imperialism or something. But at least Americans will be made to suffer so it will be worth it to them.

80 As a reflection on the side-bar article from the weekly standard on the gains be raising the minimum wage will be eaten by the cost of raising the cost of items to support the minimum wage increase for businessess, I provide the following quote:

"Suppose that by a subscription of the rich the eighteen pence a day which men earn now was made up five shillings, it might be imagined, perhaps, that they would then be able to live comfortably and have a piece of meat every day for their dinners. But this would be a very false conclusion. The transfer of three shillings and sixpence a day to every labourer would not increase the quantity of meat in the country. There is not at present enough for all to have a decent share. What would then be the consequence? The competition among the buyers in the market of meat would rapidly raise the price from sixpence or sevenpence, to two or three shillings in the pound, and the commodity would not be divided among many more than it is at present. When an article is scarce, and cannot be distributed to all, he that can shew the most valid patent, that is, he that offers most money, becomes the possessor."

Thomas Malthus, An Essay on the Principal of Population. 1798

http://www.gutenberg.org/files/4239/4239-h/4239-h.htm

In short, artificially raising the income of the poor does not give them a better life, just a more expensive one for pretty much the same standards.

If there were just some way to increase access to the good things in life by increasing supplies, somehow.

The Republican presidential candidate's airplane lost its registered

121 @54

Well look at it this way, the political reality we currently live in was created by a handful of Democrats, FDR, LBJ, et al.

We've created an enormous welfare state and a fully weaponized carnivorous federal leviathan that services at least 47pct of our population.

What would Conservstive governance and welfare state look like?

Well at its base it would reduce the size scope
and reach of the federal leviathan and devolve power, money and control back to the states.

But there are at least two problems.

Problem one: You have an entrenched federal bureaucracy that will fight this tooth and nail.

Problem two: Most states would fight this as well as they would have to provide these services that is currently being funded and supported by federal dollars and infrastructure.

Ultimately people do not want to live in a system that would give the maximum amount of autonomy and control because the nub is people do not mind control because if that were the case we would have that society, and we don't.

152 It's interesting... I was reading the Screwtape Letters recently, and my copy has a short story that CS Lewis wrote called "Screwtape Proposes a Toast."

This would have been written near the end of CS Lewis's life, probably sometime in the 1950s.

The interesting thing? In it, Lewis (via Screwtape) predicts basically everything that is going on now. In the 1950s, Lewis was able to see that calling everyone "equal" was a horrible idea, and that soon enough, in the name of "equality" mere difference would be seen as a claim of superiority which must be squashed. Individuality would be seen as a claim of superiority. Indeed, anything but mindless subservience to the societal Status Quo would be seen as a claim of superiority - and with it carry the baggage of "-ism." Racism, Classism, all of it.

159 I personally think that Trump will not get the nomination. The Never Trump faction is just too strong, and if it takes an ass chapping rules change to make that happen then it will happen.

As far as the "that will elect Hillary" argument, that will certainly happen if we run Trump, as at least half Republicans will either stay home or vote against him, along with 105% of Democrats.

The path to victory? Dump Trump. Cruz picks Sheriff Clarke. You have a committed coalition of conservatives, establishment Republicans will go along. On the other side you see a much lower turnout than in 12, as the young Bernies stay home in droves and the usual block vote of African Americans that put Obama over the top will be ambivalent at best, and will not turn out in anything like recent elections.

That and a major theme of the eleciton should be the restoration of law and order, for which the good Sheriff is the best possible messenger.

Bonus? Clarke is groomed to be the next Constitutional conservative for the top of the ticket.

I'm fixing up my new project car (one I bought new in 2006 for the daughter and recently got back). It's a Mercury Mountaineer and the third row seats had broken electric actuators.

The dealer wanted $685.00 for the two parts, the salvage yard had two good ones for $150. They even had a rear DVD system in camel color for $125.

Found a place that will redo the steering wheel in two weeks (an actual two weeks, not a Pixy two weeks) for $275. Ordered the carpeting, which I thought was really reasonable at $185.

Still looking for the factory radio/nav for that year. The car is in the body shop getting paint right now, but will be ready soon.

Love having something to work on.

169 Cynicism porn is fun, but, like other forms of porn, it's not a legitimate basis for decision-making.

It isn't?

What you call "Cynicism pron" I call hardeyed realism.

- The Republicans are never going to repeal Obamacare.

- The Republicans are never going to stop mass immigration.

- The Republicans are never going to eliminate any Federal bureaucracies, reform the regulatory bureaucracies, or reign in out-of-control entitlement spending.

This isn't cynicism, this is realism.

Things are just going to keep going the way they are until the system collapses under the weight of its unsustainable.

A very public apology could be worse than monetary damages.

Imagine, a detailed statement about what he intended, how he plotted, how he selected Whole Foods as opposed to any other store, his actions in icing the cake himself and photographing it, and the range of results of his crime -- one being that legitimate charges of discrimination will increasingly be met with disbelief.

Imagine all that in a newspaper ad or (if the judge had a lively imagination) an ad on Daily Kos, Vox, or perhaps a hundred or so campus newspapers.

I understand your frustration with conservative philosophy. It is a hinderance to creating the Country you believe can exist. If not for conservatism , a socially conscious and fair form of government could exist that would provide for all people.

The only solution is to seek a dissolution of the Union and allow the formation of two countries. People will be better off as they can choose which philosophy and country they want
to reside. Eventually the conservative country will fail and you will have vindication as you reform the Union.

The sooner you ask for this dissolution the better for everyone.

249 Washington DC has had "Taxation Without Rrepresentation" on its license plates for 16 years. It is proposing to change the slogan to "End Taxation Without Representation". My suggestion is that they change it to "GIMME!" which has the advantage of being more accurate.

I've mentioned this before, but it's one of my favorite stories.

This was at a dinner party hosted by a rather aggressively liberal, gay acquaintance...in DC. He started going off about how horrid DC is (from a guy who lives in a rather nice tony part of Georgetown, mind you) and how he's being discriminated against in Congress...because they'll take his money but won't give him a voice at the table.

I enthusiastically agreed and said DC should be a federal tax-free zone. End all the taxes.

He couldn't comprehend that. He said that wouldn't be very fair, and the only way to address these wrongs would be to make DC into a state. I like to think that he was being deliberately obtuse, but no...he genuinely couldn't envision a solution that resulted in a tax free zone.

So I changed gears. I said well, if representation is the goal here, let's cede the land back to Maryland, similar to how a portion of the District was ceded to Virginia. You get your representation through Maryland. He couldn't get that either,or at least he didn't want to.

No, this is nothing at all about "fairness" and all about trying to grab more power. And it's also the reason why my wife won't let me go to dinner parties any longer.

305 Read the article about the legal victory for the transgender.
First, upthread someone mentioned "the judge". This was not one judge, it was a Fed. appellate court, that ruled 2-1 in favor of allowing the transgender student to use the boys restroom and boy's locker room ,etc. at her middle school.
This is a middle school student, a child who is 14-15. Who believe's she is a male.
They overturned a lower court ruling which said the middle school was within it's right's to require the student to use the bathroom of her born gender.

What did they base this ruling on? Title IX, the Federal law that , like the 14th amendment , is such a blanket law that has grown massively out of it's original intent and is being used in lawfare to rule against non related issues.

These two judges said that it was discrimination to require that a mentally ill student(student has been diagnosed with body dismorphia) and who believes she is a male, to be required to use a female bathroom. It is requiring that she use facilities that are not equal to male bathrooms, because of her birth sex and not her belief sex, which violates Title IX.

The ACLU loves this because they are going to use the precedent in the lawsuits against NC to overturn it's bathroom law.

I bring this up because of it's relation to the clamoring for the law to allow US citizens to sue the Saudi's. And the rage and scraeaming being leveled at Paul Ryan for opposing this proposed legislation.

Every Fed law that is broad and sweeping(like Title IX) become giant sledgehammers that are turned against the American people and used against them. We should be demanding fewer laws and repeals of existing laws that have grown to leviathian proportions, either through their use in lawfare, or the hundreds of thousands of regulations (hidden laws) created to implement and stretch their meaning.

I say it really won't matter who is president if it is a Republican. The courts will continue to legislate from the bench and the regulators will continue to legislate from their cubicles. And Congress will do nothing.

Article V is the only way out I can see.

311 Like the time that DC Mayor Anthony Williams' aide David Howard used the word "niggardly" about 15 years ago when discussing District finances and suffered the predictable consequences.

Posted by: General Zod at April 20, 2016 10:29 AM (Bdeb0)

Oh hell, I remember that. And even after it was established what the word actually meant and that Howard was not by any stretch of the imagination making a racial slur, he still lost his job.

This is utter madness.

317 A few years ago, I heard an expression 'jewing him down' regarding negotiating a contract with some New Yorkers. Since I had never heard that, I did ask what it meant. Silly me. I think that sometimes language does change, and some expressions should be consigned to the dustheap of history.

The savage terror cult is even trying to implant bombs in human bodies and hack driverless cars, the conference heard.

It comes just hours after the West was warned that ISIS -also known as Daesh - is planning on targeting holidayers by posing as ice cream and T-shirt sellers on beach resorts in Europe.

The heinous jihadi group is sending fighters to pose as refreshment sellers before blowing themselves up using suicide vests or detonating bombs buried under sun loungers at Spanish, French and Italian resorts, according to German media.

Oh, I'm sure he'll build something along the border. I hope he puts up a historical marker on the northern bank of the Rio Grande. Back when I was in basic in 1984, I couldn't do the required 10 pull-ups. The instructor told me that I could go see my Company Commander to get a waiver from having to do it. Stupid me actually stood in front of my CC at attention and requested a waiver from doing any. He said "Sure, I'll give you a waiver from doing the 10 required." He handed me a written note and I double-timed it back to the physical instructor. He read the note, laughed and said "Recruit, your CC has waived you from the 10 and has instructed me that by the end of this course you need to do 25."

I spent any small free I had on the weekends in the gym and working out with instructors. I managed to squeak out the 25. After that, I went back to my usual upper body strength that was far less than a man's.

It turned out more DC than that. He tendered his resignation, Williams accepted it (squish), and then, after the Indignant Ones were proven to be illiterate fucking race-grievance peddlers, Williams recanted and offered him his job back. Howard declined, but took another District job in the Williams admin.

335 As the little denizens who showed up last night
prove, Trump needs real conservatives to give his movement the
intellectual ballast that his more fervent supporters so evidently lack.

That's what a coalition is.

Posted by: Ghost of kari - certified sidebar at April 20, 2016 09:09 AM (xuouz)

Trump is not going to get real conservatives because he hold none of the ideals that would attract them and all of the flaws inherent in progressiveness and the "any dirty thing to win" attitude that is so abhorrent in Democrats.
