By the by, there's a no shit we're not joking trigger warning for the last 15 minutes or so. We discuss an utterly outrageous abuse of police power involving a woman who was repeatedly cavity searched for drugs. We get explicit because there's no sugar coating what was done to her. However, what was done to her is vile so you've been warned.

Also note that this is something that both I and BC think needs a warning. That vile.

Yes it is in the rules. Yes it is allowed. Lots of things are within the rules and allowed yet they are not done b/c those actions are perceived poorly.

For example in the NBA. flopping is legal and part of the game, but even when it works you dislike the player that flops. It's visceral.

Another example from the NBA, shooting fouls shots granny style. It works great, but nobody does it because you look like a fool and people lose respect for the player.

And this isn't the NBA. This is politics. It ultimately *IS* a popularity contest and despite how we would like people to vote - people DO vote based off of emotions. Think about it - do you WANT to vote for someone who has the right policies, but you personally can't stand and don't respect?

No you don't WANT to vote for that person. You might force yourself to do it, you might tell yourself to do it. but you don't enjoy pulling the lever for someone you don't like or respect.

And with all this delegate shenanigans, Cruz is playing into Trump's "Lyin' Ted" meme. Cruz's voice, speaking style, even hair - just his overall appearance are already inclined to being perceived as a little slimy. Its like Trump's attack of "Low Energy" Jeb, just slower acting. And Cruz is walking right into this "Lyin' Ted" meme - enthusiastically even.

I am reasonably certain that this is as a result of multiple calls from high dollar donors to the development staff saying yeah about that donation.

That's how to fight back at this. Get conservative and Republican donors to call up the school and say, nope, not another damn penny.

Trust me, that gets heard very clear and very quickly. I'm speaking from experience on that.

153 the sense of space is extraordinary. for some reason i haven't noticed that before. i think it is because this photo shows the surrounding building; others i've seen are of the fresco alone.

remember, this was done c.1510, so the naturalistic light and depth are novel.

also, note the giant piers and pilasters. they echo the gigantic scale of st. peter's (something that photos don't really convey). raphael is affirming his contemporaries links to that great era. quite a balm to the viewer. somewhat justified.

I was just at the Louvre two weeks ago.

It's not as small as everyone says it is. It's probably 4'x3'? But it was bigger than I'd expected after everything you hear.

The Louvre is enormous. Enormous. There's so much other art to see I didn't bother trying to elbow my way through the throngs of Chinese to get a closer look. Instead I took a picture of everyone looking at and went to see more sculpture. It's on its own freestanding wall in the middle of a gallery and you can stand right next to the edge of said wall and look right at the semicircle of people who came all that way and waited in line and paid for tickets now using their time in the museum to take pictures of a painting.

Tulsa University was getting ready to build a mosque on campus to accommodate all the ME students who were there studying Petroleum Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, etc. My friend's Dad called the administration and told them that if they built the mosque, their family would no longer be donating money in the amounts that gets your name on a building. The mosque got built--because diversity, but, that family shut the money off cold. Actions have consequences.

Don't bother with the Mona Lisa. I regret having wasted time trying to see a painting which is behind a glass case in a room crowded with tourists (90% of whom seemed to be Japanese) when the Louvre has so many treasures.

You won't come close to seeing a fraction of what is in the Lourve even if you spend days there. Pick a period or genre or artist you especially like and focus on that.

It's even more amazing to see the French opinion on Napoleon. As an Anglocentric Irish-American I consider Napoleon a dictator but the French still revere him. He did, after all, lead France out of the Terror, reformed their legal code (and they still use his system today) and re-established it as a world power. As a French friend of mine explained, "he was France's supreme general at 27 and was crowned emperor at 33. He was a great man"

I spent a week there two weeks ago. As for all the refugee stuff, I didn't see it. I felt safe the whole time. I was accosted by a north african guy on the steps below Montmartre trying to sell me trinkets/pick my pocket (and was rescued by my sister's snarling French profanity hah) and that was it. It all seemed perfectly French to me. And I wasn't staying in the Ritz either.

To be strictly accurate, WWI was hardly a surrender on the part of the French. They fought like hell in WWI and lost an entire generation - which probably had something to do with how quickly they caved in 1940.

My father did development for colleges for over 30 years so, yeah, I know all about the call of if you do this, that several zero number check will not be sent. Sometimes it was worth the balancing for what other money would or wouldn't come in. Sometimes there was a sudden reversal of course.

But if multiple donors all say yeah we're out? That carries a ton of weight.

I agree. At the Lourve they could have angled the glass protecting the Mona Lisa so that there weren't all the reflections from the lights but they didn't. Lame. I remember walking through one area saying to my wife, "Madonna and child" over and over and over. It's like they cornered the market. Some were not that great at all. Also check the museum before deciding when to visit. Entire areas are closed at different times.

I did not get out of the city. I plan to return. Normandy and Mont St Michel are on my list.

If you do visit Les Invalides, check out the maps they have on the top floor of the museum (above the miniatures). There are these massive scale models of cities and forts all over Europe, a pre-internet google maps for military planning, that are absolutely huge, gorgeous, and hundreds of years old. They were a state secret until the 20th century.

286 267-Go to Bayeaux, if you are going to Normandy. The Tapestry is worth seeing, as is the rest of the William the Conqueror museum. Plus, the Normans are completely different from the Parisian French. They appreciate what America did in WWII, maintain the many cemeteries of American casualties with pride, and are fun, to boot.

When we were at Omaha Beach, (when I was in school, sadly, many years ago) I met a family who showed me a picture of my father. He had landed at the Beach on DDay, survived, and helped this family. Gave them his rations for their kids, protected them from the Germans, and they carried his picture around that entire time. Many tears were shed, both happy and sad.

292 19 April marks the day of a 'shot heard round' the Navy. The day the gunmount on the Iowa blew up. I had a kid work for me later who was an OSSN on the ship that day and helped recovery detail. Made a hell of an impression on him.

I was just at the Louvre two weeks ago.

It's not as small as everyone says it is. It's probably 4'x3'? But it was bigger than I'd expected after everything you hear.

The Louvre is enormous. Enormous. There's so much other art to see I didn't bother trying to elbow my way through the throngs of Chinese to get a closer look. Instead I took a picture of everyone looking at and went to see more sculpture. It's on its own freestanding wall in the middle of a gallery and you can stand right next to the edge of said wall and look right at the semicircle of people who came all that way and waited in line and paid for tickets now using their time in the museum to take pictures of a painting.

299 Mona Lisa is smaller than people expect, but its fairly large. Its just that when you see most originals they are often very huge. Most of the Hudson River guys worked huge, for example, bigger than a door.
