Overnight Open Thread (16 Apr 2016)

This is who is teaching our teachers. Professional educator: grades, showing up on time are a form of white supremacy. GTFO. That is utterly ridiculous.

Human Spies

This is very true. Why computers may never replace human spies.

Despite repeatedly coming under suspicion, Philby fed British and American secrets to Moscow for three decades before ultimately defecting in 1963. His survival, he told officers of the East German Stasi spy service in 1981, was partly down to organizational ineptitude and his privileged position as a member of Britain's ruling class.

Oh boy do we have organizational ineptitude in spades and you can just change ruling class with member of the new privileged class and you can see why we have problems like Hillary, OPM, Lin, Snowden and Manning.

In other news, this outta be fun to control in secured spaces. Samsung just patented smart contact lenses with built-in camera.

Europe's Dangerous Summer

I could see Putin testing NATO's Article Five (an attack on one is an attack on all) before Obama leaves office.

The fact is, it may be too late to deter such a campaign if Russia acts quickly enough, before the European migrant crisis and the tensions that it engenders are brought into control, before a new American administration that is more comfortable with American leadership comes into office. There needs to be some recognition that, as in Crimea, when this thing starts, it will happen very, very quickly. And it could start any day.

Buck Rogers

On this day in 1981, the last episode of Buck Rogers aired. Erin Gray. Enough said.

Hand Washing

Do jet hand dryers really spread more germs than paper towels? I don't know, but they do make you deaf. They installed one at work and it isn't even heated air so folks are still using paper towels which run out by 1300. It's almost like being in Venezuela.

Metallic Glass

Fascinating. Engineers have created a new material with an unusual chemical structure that makes it incredibly hard and yet elastic.

Flying Video

High Velocity Aerial Filming from Peter Degerfeldt Blue Sky Aerial on Vimeo.

Adaptive Camouflage

Hmmm. Color-changing polymer adapts camouflage to match surroundings.

Microaggressions

Saying 'America is a melting pot' is a microaggression, Purdue class teaches. Well shit, why don't they just say fuck America and let's Balkanize it? Maybe apply Biden's Iraq plan? Friggin' idiots.

Additional microaggressions listed on the worksheet include: "Where are you from," "There is only one race, the human race," "Everyone can succeed in society if they work hard enough" and "I believe the most qualified person should get the job."

Vodka

Well, you gotta use val-u-rite for starters. "Vodka doesn't necessarily make bad cocktails, but every bad cocktail has vodka in it."

[The common belief is that] vodka is the province of unsophisticated, brand-obsessed drinkers trying to get drunk as efficiently as possible

Is that wrong?

30 War in Europe? Nah. No way. If'n you mean real war, between conventional forces. The kind of crap going on in Ukraine, or for years (without any notice) in Moldova (one of my favorites - the "trans-Dnistrian crisis"), sure.

Haven't read the article, but will do so. Have never bought for a second that Putin wants any real fireworks involving NATO or the US. On the contrary. Plus - try to imagine a western European NATO country actually taking up arms - over almost anything. At this point? Even the Brits would have to dust off the de facto half-mothballed Royal Navy, and a million quatloos to the first moron to find any political will in a western European country with a military larger or more powerful than the California Highway Patrol.

Putin can't intimidate the Baltics or the Poles to turn the clock back in any meaningful way. Nor does he really need to.

Turkey is much more interesting. Though it seems Putin has either achieved his goals in Syria or adjusted them and decided to go with the flow.

It's not simply "ok ok, I recognize my white privledge lets go get some brews and buffalo wings and watch a ballgame"

What do you suppose is going to happen once whites are in the minority in this country?

which is not too far off given the fact that both parties are getting as many immigrants and reffugees in this country as fast as they possibly can.

Why? For what purpose

For some, in their minds, a very just and belated rendering of the verdict "Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin." An America where WASP culture will just have been a blip of a few hundred years, eventually made right. They have judged the entire ediface, and found us wanting, and are merely waiting to read us out of existence. Not individuals, of course, though "pure bloods" will become a lesser caste. But the culture--oh, yes. Sometimes, dispassionately, you have to weed.

For some, that is the intent. Not a plurality, probably not even sizable--but like the true Communists of the 1920s-1950s, influential enough.

uh-oh. You sound alt-right for some reason. People might go to the fainting couches over this.

I've read some very disturbing things over the last few months, about and within the alt-right, as it is named. The disturbing things WITHIN it are how hurt people are because they see what could possibly be coming (and with less doubt about THAT every year).

The disturbing things from without are written by people that are immersed in identity politics, yet see only the splinter in your eye, and not the beam in their own.
Identity politics will tear this country apart. It's coming like a big freight train, and nothing is going to stop it.

Putin does not want NATO... he doesn't want Europe, they are his customers (Nat Gas)...

What he wants is his Near Abroad. Just as we have the Monroe Doctrine, he wants his borders to have buffer States between him and the European Union... the same EU that has been EXPANDING...

Lets look at... oh... Georgia... The US under Bush was sending US Special Forces in to due 'training ops' right on the Southern border of Russia itself. Putin reacted.

Lets look at Ukraine.... where a Democratically elected pro Russian Government was overthrown, and then made noises of joining the EU... once again on Russia's direct border.

Lets look at Syria... where the US, against the UN Treaty, trained and armed insurgents to overthrow a UN member State, who has a Defense Treaty with Russia....

We've been poking the Bear in the eye.... and then suddenly wonder why it reacts... at a time when we have other problems (note, no Russians have killed any Americans.... but lots of Moslems have...).

I think the best plan is a new Marshall Plan for Russia--we offer to buy every Russian all the vodka they can drink, and though it will cost the same as the entire defense budget (one Stoli per day at $30/bottle), I figure in a few years they will have drunk themselves to death.

99 White Privilege is an attempt to replace racism as a control concept. The more racist and openly bigoted culture becomes against whites, the harder it is to condemn racism as a concept. NObody seriously buys into the 'blacks can't be racist' thing and they never did. Particularly with a black president of the USA they can't really use the 'whites are in power' line.

So they came up with White Privilege: you just have it easier and better and need to suffer to make up for it.

Its part of the basically childish and idiotic theory which posits that all people are equal, so if anyone does worse in anything, or anyone does better in anything, then it is because of oppression, theft, and cruelty. You aren't better at math because you're gifted in it, you are suppressing others and relying on white supremacy to gain better grades. That guy isn't worse at sports because he's just an uncoordinated clutz, he's been oppressed and treated bad in the past and held back.

This is why process is so important, why *how* things are done matters. It is the canary in the coal mines. After you breach process, I actually have to watch you to make sure you aren't up to no good. And that consumes time most people don't care to do.

Once we normalize a few deviations because "hey, we all think it a good idea", then we can start normalizing the big ones.

Context matters. In this sense--"why would you go all out on a cartoon like Fantasia?"

Because feature-length cartoons were still a fairly rare premium product in 1940 (Snow White was only three years earlier, Pinocchio had just come out that year), the premise of "Fantasia" was sort of a gamble, and because there was still something called "high society" in 1940, and classical music was something that people actually listened to and used as status thing--so they weren't going to appreciate it if Disney made a hash out of it. As it was, I understand there was a little pushback on this "lowbrow" approach to high brow art. Or at least that is what I read when the 1991 (or so) re-release happened.

By the time of "Little Mermaid", feature length cartoons need not justify their existence, and hence the art could be of lesser quality.

Or in other words--both Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back are great because for both of them, Lucas knew he had to justify his vision to others. After that, he didn't, and the results are obvious.

133 @129 They sure did. Then look at these guys on those outlandish cop bikes from the 30's, long wheelbase, no rear suspension, girder forks, and footplates, how they have to sway completely different parts of the body to influence the inertia -- and look at the shit they get away with! There's some just astounding stunt riding in most slapstick chase scenes, and, if memory serves, High Sierra. Those were some hella riders.

It must have been something to watch when, to simplify matters and make everything easier, the Army specified clutch pedals and manual shift levers...

I lean toward an progressive voting system based on age.

At 18 you can vote, but your vote is only worth 0.2 vote units.

So it takes five Bernietards to cancel one 50-year old woman with a job and a mortgage.

Then as you reach target ages you get more voting power.

By forty you get a full vote.

Too narrow. I prefer only those who have or are serving in the military, or those who have or are paying taxes, get to vote.

The philosophical principle is that only those who have skin in the game get to vote.

And you're right about the poll tax. It's perfectly reasonable to disenfranchise those who contribute nothing. Why should those who contribute nothing get their say on where contributions (either in cash or in kind) of others should be applied? Do ticks get to decide on where the dog goes?

234 "I like the idea in "Starship Troopers." Only combat vets get to vote."

In Heinlein's world you could be a citizen if you provided some value to society. Military service would be the most straightforward way, but there were others. And even with military service you didn't actually have to see combat.

But what *didn't* get you citizenship was being born in a particular place to particular parents.

I like the idea in principle, but it seems like over the years it would get harder and harder to become a citizen, as the people who actually had the franchise are in control, and they benefit from a smaller club. Eventually you'd end up with hereditary voting rights and we'd be right back in feudalism.

235 They have really awesome hand dryers in Japan. Very high pressure from very small openings, really like a squeegee on your hands. Takes seconds to dry them, all the splatter stays in the contraption and you walk away with dry hands.

Even the Dyson air blade, which is advertised as the fastest hand dryer (but didn't take into consideration Japan) takes awhile if you want really dry hands.

I hate leaving a public loo with damp hands, and having to figure out how to get out of the door without picking up something oogie. Hem of my shirt gets used a lot. Too hot for long sleeves most of the year here.

242 Oops sorry AOP, we seem to be fresh out of coal power plants down here.
We used to have some (1920's) high-tech incinerators, though. And they tested clean, as long as they were fueled with forced-air anthracite, as designed. The first time Big City didn't get a general tax increase they put on the ballot, in came the brown coal. After a couple of decades, they'd just throw a match in the pit every week or so. Took 50 years to get rid of them. Rats hardest hit.

Then we went to an Exciting!New! system to reclaim methane from landfills and co-generate. That went just 100% over budget, including some federal grant money (shocker, I know). When the monthly subsidy got to more than the projected monthly profit that never materialized, they shut her down. Pipes are still in, though. No apology, no explanation. Just "things turned out badly."

So when it comes to getting rid of the paper towels, I'm more willing to just trust the janitor. Did somebody think that installing the blowers was going to cut into janitorial staffing, or something? I'd like to see the charts on that.

Many of the newer public restrooms have dispensed with main doors, and simply have a zigzag entryway instead. Passers-by can't see in. WalMart and airports often have such. But I do prefer paper towels to the roaring machinery. And sometimes you need towels to sop something up, say if you spill food or drink upon yourself.

Yup. I like paper towels. They are made from all the leftover stuff from lumber mills, which is kind of like recycling, when you think about it. You're not wasting anything.

So, I guess if you want to do Maximum Virtue Signaling, you don't focus on the fact that you are using what would be waste from the lumber mill industry, and rather say the lumber mills should go out of business, quit cutting down trees at all! Make houses out of mud bricks!

265 Hey ONTers, if any of you are chess players left over from today's chess thread, I created a chess group on chess.com called, appropriately enough, 'Moron Horde'.

This is the first time I've done this, so I don't know really what I'm doing. But here's the link, for those who are interested:

https://www.chess.com/groups/home/moron-horde

I'll hang around here for another half hour (until 1 AM Eastern), let me know if there's a problem. If I'm no longer here, send e-mail to the book thread e-mail.

266 So when it comes to getting rid of the paper towels, I'm more willing to just trust the janitor. Did somebody think that installing the blowers was going to cut into janitorial staffing, or something? I'd like to see the charts on that.

Posted by: Stringer Davis at April 17, 2016 12:16 AM (xq1UY)

That's why I suggested it was virtue signalling, more than a "better" way to dry hands. And probably some saving on janitorial labor. But surely more power consumption.

Don't be deceived because you are not hearing the sound of gunfire, because even so you are fighting for your lives."--Your America to be Free, Ronald Reagan, 1957

"...Kirk Douglas remembered it, "Thousands of people fought in the street, with knifes, clubs, battery cables, brass knuckles and chains."... To avoid injury, workers, including stars who were shooting movies, were forced to sneak into the studio lot through a storm drain that led from the Los Angeles River. ...Reagan flat-out refused. If he was going to cross the [Communist] picket line, he was going to cross the picket line, he told Matthews. ...Lie down on the floor or you might get hit by flying Coke bottle or rock. Again, Reagan refused. Over the next several days, as he went to the studio lot for preproduction meetings, a bus would pass through the human throng of violent picketers, with a solitary figure seated upright inside."--'Reagan's War', Peter Schweizer

A solitary figure--the smallest majority.

I mention this because this White Privilege horse-shit is a guilt trip meant to deny white people of their God-given Equal Protection Rights under the Constitution. Yes, it seems All Lives Matter to God and under our Constitution--or what's left of it.

Rosa Parks wouldn't accept second-class treatment by racialists on the bus. Ronald Reagan wouldn't cower before Communists on his bus ride either. And I'll be damned if I let them guilt-trip me into their subjugation either. Piss off, rats.

I've long thought there should have been THREE houses of Congress. The Senate, safeguarding the rights of states, 2 per. The House, safeguarding the rights of people, based on population. And the Assembly of Enablers.....where anyone filing a tax return has a credit for every dollar paid with the return -- and can proxy anyone they wish with that dollar on the actual return. The 500 largest proxies actually meet, the rest get to stifle. Votes in the Assembly of Enablers are by dollars paid, not by representative.

The other two fluffing houses can propose anything their little hearts desire, but if it doesn't make it through the Assembly of Enablers, it shouldn't be funded.

There aren't many exploitable hydro sites within Alberta. Most of the big rivers have a relatively low gradient, so dams would have to very wide, and flood hundreds of square miles of valley land to get any practical head. And the higher-gradient streams on the Eastern Slopes of the Rockies are mostly in parks, and thus off-limits.

And to the dedicated greentards, hydro isn't "renewable". probably because it works.

Went on about how this adds up to the increasing likelihood of a really horrendous 8.x quake coming up, and the horrendous damage such a major quake would do to a major urban population ... which is where I began to think was a weird thing, because, there's really no predicting quakes....

Then it started going into the Bible and end times. That's when I looked at the address bar and realized I was on InfoWars.

390 My dad was, in his heyday, kind of the dean of backhoe operators in this county. Also a "Million Mile" trucker, so, not unaware of safety concerns. But he'd done a lifetime of digging pretty much on the flat. Five counties here have their landfill as the highest point ASL. So when he retired and moved the Piedmont in NC, he took the rig with him, and got into a lot of adventures.

Digging for a new hospital, he got into some of that side-hill action. Dug in, got the loader bucket down flat, both riggers duly seated -- and rolled that big sucker down the hill bigger than hell. He never liked seatbelts on the machine, but must have sensed something because he had it on that day.

He needed a new hood when the dust cleared, and, I reckon, a change of pants.

418 That is not a spy pistol, it is an "Apache" pistol, made in France and Belgium they were basically a revolver that had a number of other weapons integrated in it.
It was called "Apache" after the French street gang "les Apaches"

A lot of fin de secle and later writers like to use the term "like an Apache" when talking of someone speaking loose or gutter.
Anais Nin, for example.

431 Kindl, I'd heard of that pistol, and knowing odd guns will win you a lot of bets.
Anais Nin is pushing it, though, bub.

Old ag tractors were heavy all over, on purpose, for traction. My John Deere weights more than a ton less than the IH it replaced -- makes up for it with 4WD, and if that's not enough "ass," you add wheel weights. As risky as side-hill work can be, I think the worst peril with a straight guide-wheel tractor was popping a wheelie all the way and going end-over-end. Plowing deep or yanking a ripper, if you suddenly encountered an obstacle with the implement, up she'd come and over you went, with no way to stop it or get clear. That could happen on perfectly flat ground, in an open field that showed no danger, so doubly hazardous.

433 I'm ecstatic about nabbing a set of 25 ER20 collets, a 2MT holder, a straight holder, and a wrench, for $25 this morning. I've already got quality 2MT collets by 1/8" for my mill, so it'd be reasonable to wonder why I'm so excited -- and the answer is that ER series collets grip a range of diameters.....so having a good SAE set of up to 1/2" means I can precisely grip and spin a variety of metric tools as well as SAE tools.

Hell, ER collets can precisely center drill rod of arbitrary diameter.

Anyway, I'm very happy with my acquisition -- and grateful to the forum where I acquired it and individual who sold it to me.

434 Okay, Horde, this is an Official Notice, of unofficial variety.

Commencing Sunday noon-ish, I'll be away from the 'net as a whole, for the entire week. That said, I might capture a bit of Wi-Fi in the wild, so to speak, here n' there along the way.

I'll be a few hundred miles offshore for a great deal of the time, but I shall Endeavor to Persevere, and abstain from mutiny aboard the vessel aboard which I'll sail.

But if I do capture that 100,000+ ton monster, you Morons are invited aboard for the party of a lifetime, I promise you that!

So to myself, I'll wish Fair Winds and Following Seas.

To the Ewok? Breaking Winds and no Following Solids.

A collet is a thing that grips a cylindrical tool of a certain diameter for spinning. I have a set of good-quality collets that grip tools up to 1/2" in 1/8" increments for my mill. If I want to spin a 3/8" end-mill or 1/8" grinding wheel, I'm good with the usual collets.

What I acquired today are ER20 collets -- they're good for ranges. If I got a 16mm end-mill before today, I could only spin it in a 3-jaw chuck. Now, I can try spinning it in a 9/16"-5/8" collet.
