Thread Below the Saturday Gardening Thread: April 16, 2016 [Y-not]

Haters gonna hate:

Talk show host Montel Williams is bullying one of North Carolina\'s Republican congressional candidates because she supports the state's bathroom law that ensures women's safety and privacy.

Kay Daly is a lifelong conservative activist who is running against 21 other candidates to fill NC-13's open seat. Her support of House Bill 2, which requires people to use public restrooms that match their biological sex and not their gender perception, has made her a target of the talk show host, who has called her""a horrid woman."

Speaking of the death of civility, conservative columnist Mary Katharine Ham has been targeted by online trolls recently:

This past week, she published an article entitled "Ivanka Trump Is Everything Donald Wants To Be But Is Not," which received a fair amount of criticism. But some of the critics, rather than attacking the article, went after Ham personally...

@mkhammer I felt sorry for you when your husband died while you were pregnant, but no more, he is better off not being with u ur nasty

--Bettie Harvey (@Bettieh) April 7, 2016

This is the article that triggered the release of so much venom. Throughout the article Ham praises one of Donald Trump's daughters, pointing out the positive qualities she possesses that, in Ham's opinion, Mr. Trump lacks.

It doesn't strike me as a good reason to direct so much hatred at MKH. YMMV.

Open thread for non-gardening talk.

Yeah, I don't read her. It's sad what happened to her husband, but only "sad" in the sense that the world contains all sorts of tragedy that does not involve me in any meaningful way.

She writes for a living, and puts her name/ideas out there, and this being the internet, she gets replies. Some come from people who don't agree with her. So it gets ugly.

Well yeah.

I deal with ugly stuff on the job every day, but none of it gets on the internet, so nobody cares. Nor should they.

55 "self-identify".

If I self-identify as the owner of your car, I can drive it.

That's the key word, not LGBT, per se. You can't stop anyone including pedophiles from full access to vulnerable women and girls if the legal standard is "self-identify". Stop the brutal virtue signaling and address this.

And underlying all this is the Coercion of the Governed. Not only must the Little Sisters of the Poor be made to provide abortions, they must also share their facilities with men?

These businesses and Democrat politicians should subject their customers and employees to these Bathrooms Without Borders theories first. And they should campaign on and advertise them widely.

65 As for the crap that Mary Katharine Ham is getting from the Trump fanfolk, very politician who gets as far as a Presidential candidate accumulates a certain number of emotionally committed supporters who seem to have given up their reason and sense of proportion in the worship of their one and only candidate. I am sure that even John Kasich has some of these. It seems, however the Donald Trump has a disproportionately large number of these fanbois and fangurlz.

You can't win an election with nothing but those fanfolk but two terms of Barack Obama demonstrate that having large numbers of them does not mean that a candidate cannot get elected.

I will vote for Donald Trump if he is the Republican candidate because doing everything in my power to keep Hillary Clinton out of the White House is the adult thing to do and I have an obligation to my children to try to not let this country get any more fucked up than it is now. 68 A revolutionary thought. How about if I support the state staying out of your bedroom, living room and home bathroom and you support keeping your freak flag to yourself or only showing it to like minded adult company rather than insisting on flashing and peeking at wimmen and girls.

And that is a mis-statement of the NC law from what Hammer has said. The law would still allow a business to have free for all bathrooms it only exempted businesses and schools in Charlotte from having to do the free for all after the Charlotte city council passed the trannies rights trump women's concerns law that made free for all bathrooms and showers mandatory.

And Donald is ok with that, which is his business. In that part of his life, his children (by Ivana) all seem to be pretty good people. All working together for Donald's Real Estate company, all pretty smart.

Don't know what the point of MKH column was (fill up space and get paid, I guess), but it was indeed fluff.

I don't hate Donald, but I think he is an odd guy. Very clever in his own way, but is a total unknown as to what he will do if elected. A big crap shoot. Which is what some people want, and I understand that.

I don't hate Ted Cruz, and think he is a brilliant guy, tremendous legal mind. Does not have the common touch, which I think will doom him if he is nominated, which is too bad. I don't want a common, average man to be President. I want someone exceptional. Which is Ted.

I don't hate John Kasich. He lives one street over from me. Some of my neighbors actually know his wife, who is a very nice and pleasant woman. As governor, he's been a big improvement over Ted Strickland, last governor (Democrat). Mostly good, some bad things. Nobody is perfect. People think he is a "liberal" because he backed / forced the Medicare expansion against the will of his own party (which controls the Ohio House and Senate). That was ugly.
But kept the budget balanced, no new taxes (actually some tax cuts), better run state government, employment has been slowly rising for 5 years (only partly due to government policies, obviously).
I don't want him to be President, because he is pretty close to the GOPe. Not a bad man, but the WRONG man for this time.

77 This shit is so totalitarian. I believe that people are free to believe whatever they want to believe even if it defies reality but it crosses a line when you force and harass other people into "believing" your reality defying nonsense. I think a big part of this transgender bathroom movement is to punish people and force them to espouse ideals they don't believe because a certain segment of the population doesn't just want toleration, they want absolute capitulation and get off on violating their opponents freedom on conscience. Those types of assholes are totalitarians. Way to many of them on the left these days.

109 I have a friend who does off-hours call at police stations and hospitals as a translator. I got credentialed for the same work because I sub for him when he is on vacation or sick.

A couple of weeks ago he got called into the ER because there was a Honduran "girl" who knew no English. But "she" would not talk to him, was afraid of him. (He's big, at least by Meso-American standards, and very obviously a hetero-cis-male oppressor.) They couldn't find a single female in the place who spoke Spanish, so they called me in.

I am told that either fear of or hostility toward very masculine males is extremely common among trannies.

Soooo, this is one argument I would make against the idiots who want public ladies' rooms to admit men. Trannies who dress like women, look like women, and act like women want privacy and security as much as cis-women do, if not MORE. Separate facilities benefit ALL women, whether they are "women" or women.

(I personally couldn't care less if someone who dresses like a woman, looks like a woman, and acts like a woman uses the ladies' room. How would I know xer DNA? "She" does not present a threat to me. But to say that an obvious male can enter,....forget about it. That is a security nightmare.)

I'm sure that's true, and a lot of transgenders live on the edge - drugs, prostitution, etc.. However, the problem is that the LGBT activists have decided a separate unisex bathroom is unacceptable - they want to be in the girl's room/locker room/changing room or else you are stigmatizing them (kinda like how civil unions suddenly became not enough). This happened w/a CO boy who sued his school to be in the girls room - he and his family said the unisex loo was just not good enough.

Also, if you've watched the video over at American Thinker, you see that there are numerous predators - scary dudes who rape, assault and murder, who dress as women to get at their prey, or they are sexually confused in addition to being bad dudes. So, there is overlap of the trans and sexual predator communities.

156 Just wanted to stop in and mention a few "God incidences" which happened to me today and yesterday yesterday. God incidences are what other people who are not people of faith call happy "coincidences."

I wanted to go on a short retreat before I started my interim assignment which begins tomorrow, but the retreat center I usually go to was closed for renovations, and the other one I sometimes visit was a little to far for me to go. So I went a local t hotel instead, During dinner last night I was sitting two tables away from a man and his family . The older man turned out to be a retired Nazarene pastor and seminary professor from Idaho and his family. I told them I was going to a conflicted church and asked for prayers. When they finished up dinner he come by he lied his hand on my shoulder and they all said prayers for me and the church and the former pastor.

Today I was an breakfast and there were two women there. One was a clergywoman and one was a theology professor and they were staying over in order to give a workshop for a local Episcopal Diocese. They said that they would pray for me and the church and the former pastor as well.

These were God incidences and I feel so blessed by them!.

I really can't think of a more despicable sort of intellectual attack on someone.

You also have to factor in that the transgenders have a 40%+ attempted suicide rate. These are not happy people, which is understandable if they really believe that their body betrays their true self. We can empathize with them, but I don't think putting people with these issues in a unit is going to help overall morale, team work, etc.

The next hurdle will be if convention day arrives with neither of the two having achieved the magical 1237 delegates. If so, I hope they can set aside their differences (which are mostly theater, anyways) and enter the convention as a united front with an overwhelming delegate count.

Welcome to my world.

Over the years, as each leftist initiative gained traction, I've said "Next up will be ..." and people rolled their eyes at the nutjob. (E.g., when fruits were agitating for "tolerance," saying that they didn't want to interfere with marriage, just wanted to queer off in peace, I shook my head: "Nope. They'll want marriage next," to the derision of those who scoffed at the tired and broken "slippery slope" fallacy. Yet ... here we are.)

It is in the nature of movements to go progressively (?) further and further out (as would-be leaders move out there to break out of the pack), only to snap back later. I call it the "French Revolution effect."

202 Idle Saturday pondering:

I believe in turning things over to the Almighty, asking God to guide and direct me to doing God's will, and like that. Better Your Will than mine, oh Lord!

The more fouled up things get, the less I seem to be able to find answers or do right, the more I seek God's plan, depend on the Spirit for help, inSpiration, whatever-- something! Seeking the "still small voice" that whispers, "this is the Way."

The problem I have is the "answer" I seem to get.

There's a tale - pretty sure I got this from Baba Ram Dass (the Be Here Now guy):

A Great King has a flash of spiritual insight one day, and decides he's going to submit himself to God. To do so, the King leaves his mighty palace, in all his regalia and, with the usual royal entourage in tow, travels to the nearby mud hut, residence of the Guru, who lives humbly and has nothing but the blanket he wears.

The King enters the Guru's hut, kneels before the Guru, handing the Guru his scepter of power, and saying, "Oh, Guru, I am as nothing. I give all my kingdom to you." The Guru smiles, takes the scepter, and thanks the King, accepting his gift.

Then, the Guru hands the scepter back to the King, and says, "Now, you run it for me." ♥

The upshot is, of course, all kingdoms are already God's.

Always liked that story, but in terms of my own attempt to turn over my life to the Almighty, it's all well and good if you have a clue how to run your kingdom. Not so much if you really need guidance or assistance. God may be saying, you have all you need already, yet if things keep going awry, where is the confusion? I mean: whut? Maybe the answer is "not yet"?

*shrug* Meanwhile, what can one do but keep on keepin' on?

222 I have thought for a number of year's that Donald Trump's kids were a real tribute to their mothers and to Donald himself.

There were a number of golfing specials featuring Trump a few years back, and I always enjoyed his son's participation. It seemed like there was a lot of mutual care and respect.

Maybe people can knock them - I'm not sure exactly for what, but think about it. Growing up a Trump - on the surface - would seem to be a backdrop that might produce kids that would make Justin Bieber and the Kardashians seem like iconic role models.

Trump needs no defense. Trump has won.

Trump must be put in as POTUS to preserve the sinecures of both the GOPe and the Democrats.

It would be a disaster for them if he isn't.

Why? Because he has publicly shown that US is no better at picking its President than Iran. See Scott Adams (dilbert.com) for a concise explanation.

Women comprise a significant disproportion of the Left (in terms of voting, etc.) but they don't drive the leftist bus, and frankly (no offense), being highly socialized, are easily led. If the cool girl in high school does something, they all end up doing it in short order, and the pattern continues thereafter. All those driving the leftist bus have to do is put a bell on an iconic figure, have the media trumpet her as the new reality, and leftist women will follow.

This controversy...as difficult as it might seem to us, is nothing compared to the election of 1800, where Thomas Jefferson finally prevailed after 36 ballots in the Congress, if my history serves me correctly. We've all been getting a refresher course on these earlier elections. John Kennedy's election was by a narrower margin in the popular vote than the 300,000 margin that currently exists here. And yet, he was able to unify the country in a relatively short time after the election. Jefferson's healing speech in March of 1801 is one of the most notable in the history of the presidency: "We are all Republicans. We are all Federalists."So the resiliency of our democracy is often underestimated, but it is always proven out in the end. ... I have urged no one associated with my cause to ever charge that the other side is trying to steal the election or take the result away in an unethical way. I think such language is damaging to our republic, especially in a time of enhanced vulnerability and civic tension. In response, to those who have proposed matching demonstration for demonstration for demonstration, and crowd for crowd, I have counseled patience and forbearance."

Before you run with the horribly misleading "Cruz bombs at NY GOP Gala" headline, you might want to know some basic facts about what really happened.

For one thing, dinner was served to the attendees right when Cruz started his speech. Trump and Kasich spoke beforehand, and the timing of that is very dubious.

For another, the podium mic was cut while the floor mics were turned on in their place. When you have a mic on the attendees and not the speaker, any similar event will sound just like that. Rush talked a lot about this very thing yesterday.

Are we running with bullshit and false premises just because Fox News is the one running with it now?

Why be "sorry" for stating the obvious?

Women are also hardwired to care far more about security than anything else --- the security of the nest, of the children.

Dennis Prager has often and eloquently pointed out that each sex has its own biologically-driven tendencies. But while our society works hard ---(and today goes way overboard) --- to get men to control the anti-social drives associated with testosterone, there is zero recognition that women need to overcome their own hormone-driven weaknesses.
Indeed, these weaknesses are elevated as virtues.

The results are all around us.

and gay marriage; and how pederastry would follow that.. Well, of course
she was some right-wing nut job. Of course.

Polygamy is next. It's already in the courts in Utah. My prediction is that a Muslim-American man, legally married overseas to multiple Muslim-American women, will petition in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to have the second marriage recognized, and he will win. There is no distinguishing principle after Obergefell that prevents it.

284 Let me walk back a bit my comment above about "easily led." Women are more highly socialized than men (for reasons that will be obvious from a sociobiological viewpoint), and in this context that makes easily manipulated.

It takes nerve to tell the pack to get stuffed, and throughout most of human history a woman could not survive without the pack (Hell, many men would be hard-pressed, too, for that matter.), and so go along to get along. Telling everyone else to get stuffed is not in most women's repertoire.

Doing so IS in some men's repertoire, however, but that cuts two ways. Stepping out from the pack allows men to make discoveries (Columbus!), overturn various orthodoxies (Luther! Heisenberg!), make inventions (the transistor!), start new industries (Gates!) and basically overstep existing (or perceived) boundaries.

That's the good news. The bad news is that on the downside it's the exact same sentiment and deficient socialization that leads men to commit crimes, start wars, and commit genocide.

---------------

Actually, the majority of Liberals do not 'think' that way. They simply have learned that they must 'say' the right things in order to socially survive among their peers. It is likely a terrible burden to have say what you are supposed to, rather than what you actually think.

By way of example, if Montel Williams were asked if he favored mature men being allowed to shower with his young daughter, it is almost certain that the sanity override in his brain would have said "No."

Opponents of NC HB2 should be asked if they want to share showers with children of the opposite sex.

The follow up question then, would be, "Then why are you in favor of forcing that on others?"

When the topic of NC HB2 comes up, those who oppose it should be asked that question.

314 I fastidiously avoid any comment on our current Sunni-Shi'a love-fest equivalent, but two things stand out. Both of them stand out because I expect certain things from Cruz, a high standard he has earned.

The Cruz statement after the Chicago Trump rally incident came close to shocking me (doesn't happen much any more). An Al Sharpton-style non-condemnation condemnation. Shocking for two reasons: first (mainly) because it was vile and flirted with mob-mentality thuggery in politics, second because there was absolutely zero political benefit to be had from it. Beneath him - AND pointless.

In a very different vein, and this gets more to political instincts, when he was visiting locally Cruz decided the tack to take on the current disastrous imposition of female participation in all combat roles by the Pentagon was to ..... roll out a ludicrous scare-mongering meme about girls being drafted for combat.

Silly, politically. Nobody (for good reason) now thinks in terms of a draft, of "OMG my kid might have to go" - as a practical matter it simply is *not* the political trip-wire it was under conscription. Obviously. For years now. The disastrous new policies of the Pentagon offer political mileage (in opposing them) - but scare-mongering about your girls being drafted is not the way to do it (even the crowd's response confirmed this - there was barely any response, as most were probably thinking "WTF? Thought the problem was screwing up the military - there's no draft for my kids?")

And with that, tomato seedlings, basil seeds, and 30-06 brass are calling.

336 From Wiki's Jim Jones entry (which is very good):

"Unlike most supposed cult leaders, Jones was able to gain public support and contact with prominent politicians in the local and national level. For example, Jones and Moscone met privately with vice presidential candidate Walter Mondale on his campaign plane days before the 1976 election, leading Mondale to publicly praise the Temple.[44][45] First Lady Rosalynn Carter also personally met with Jones on multiple occasions; corresponded with him about Cuba; and spoke with him at the grand opening of the San Francisco Democratic Party Headquarters, where Jones garnered louder applause than Mrs. Carter.[44][46][47]

In September 1977, California assemblyman Willie Brown served as master of ceremonies at a large testimonial dinner for Jones attended by Governor Jerry Brown and Lieutenant Governor Mervyn Dymally.[48] At that dinner, Brown touted Jones as "what you should see every day when you look in the mirror in the early morning hours... a combination of Martin King, Angela Davis, Albert Einstein... Chairman Mao".[49] Harvey Milk, who spoke at political rallies at the Temple,[50] wrote to Jones after a visit to the Temple: "Rev Jim, It may take me many a day to come back down from the high that I reach today. I found something dear today. I found a sense of being that makes up for all the hours and energy placed in a fight. I found what you wanted me to find. I shall be back. For I can never leave."[51][52]"

Kind of sad about Ringo Starr. About him being bitten by the SJW virus, I mean. He was always the least political of the Beatles, just wanted to play music and have a good time. And his post-Beatle efforts were general fun pop music, too. Nice, light musical entertainment.

I'm wondering if it was really him, or some douche in his management company.

when he was visiting locally Cruz decided the tack to take on the

IIRC, a couple generals/senior officers have publicly suggested that women be eligible for the draft. I know some of the conservative groups that regularly spam my email threw a fit about it.

Personally, I am all for it, on the basis that the only way to get back to the "bad old days" of patriarchy and chivalry is for enough people to get hurt enough in obviously enough ways that society starts to rethink its assumptions. Sucks for my nieces, alas.

360 Still convinced that reform of the party can be accomplished by political means.

BUT it has to start at local levels. Everything flows from this.

That means school boards, trustees, councilmen, mayors--ALL of it.

Think of this as our long march through the institutions.

No doubt a formidable task, but the left managed it. There will be considerable heartburn involved, I realize.

Can't be helped. We WILL prevail, of course, Being Americans leaves us no other choice.

Posted by: irongrampa at April 16, 2016 02:10 PM (P/8aq)

Very few years ago, my little community would vote down any/all local tax increases, and the public schools ran well, on small budgets, and state-wide low per-student costs.

In the last five years, now all tax increases (which get voted on EVERY election) pass with substantial majorities, and the board has exorcised the last of the fiscal conservatives this past election two weeks ago. It wasn't even close. there were 3 candidates for one slot. The other two both had twice as many votes as the conservative.

I'm all for starting at the local level, but sadly, where I live, we're just starting to sweep in the other direction. It's either going to all fall apart, or it's going to take a long long time for the pendulum to swing back.

And why didn't that additional credible information (from a story not picked up by NYT, BuzzFeed, WaPo, Daily Beast and any number of other outlets who would have a cherished space of honor on their wall for Cruz's scalp) surface in time for Wisconsin, where a loss would have sunk the Cruz campaign once and for all?

You are aware that whoever wins is going to need the voters of the other, right?

But since you are chuckling about delegates, Trump also lost in that race at Virginia's 10 district convention today. All three district delegates voted in as well as one of the alternates are strong Cruz supporters. That makes the second district convention and the second loss for Trump (the 9th district voted in two Cruz supporters and one Trump supporter as national delegates). So its 5 to 1 Cruz/Trump delegates thus far in Virginia.

Not that he will cause alllll those Democrats who voted for him in the primaries? They will be voting for the actual Democratic candidate come November.
