Trump Has Already Missed Some Major Deadlines in the Delegate Election Process

Including in Arizona and Virginia, where he won. He'll have those delegates on the first ballot, bound as they are to vote for him by law, but since he didn't get anyone loyal to him elected to be delegates, they'll probably be voting for others on the second ballot.

Trump's team is only now starting to engage in the delegate selection process, the choosing of the actual people who will attend and vote at the convention. Republicans have already selected delegates in at least nine states. And in others, such as Virginia and Arizona, the deadline to apply to be a delegate has passed.

Indiana's primary, for example, won't take place until next month. But the deadline to become a national convention delegate was in mid-March.

"Are we concerned? Yes, definitely," said Tony Samuel, vice chairman of Trump's Indiana campaign.

...

Cruz has built an organization of volunteers who are working in state after state to get his supporters selected as delegates, even those who must vote for Trump at first.

Trump is just ramping up his operation, but in some states he's too late.

In Virginia -- a state where Trump won the primary -- he has missed the deadlines to assemble lists of potential delegates. Cruz, however, has delegate candidates in 10 of Virginia's 11 congressional districts.

Trump has done a better job of getting his delegates elected in Nevada and Michigan.

Meanwhile, Marco Rubio says a contested convention should go to the only conservative remaining in the race, who he says is Ted Cruz.

At his press conference yesterday, Paul Ryan called for a rule that would block anyone who hasn't run this year from being nominated, which would eliminate him as a potential candidate. But that would permit one of the 15 candidates already eliminated to be nominated.

Ted Cruz is attacking Trump's dumb "The nomination is being stolen from me by my opponents who are also trying to be nominated" rallying cry.

Also note, in that link, Rush Limbaugh continues to rebut Trump's claim that playing the game to beat Trump somehow constitutes "cheating" in the game.

By the way, you know that guy who burned his GOP membership card? The guy who claimed that he was illegally barred from attending the state nominating caucus in Colorado?

Yeah... this is becoming a pattern, but it seems that neither Trump, his on-the-ground-advisers, his delegates, and his shills like Drudge and the rest of the traffic-happy Trumpblogs, bothers to read any of the rules or do a lick of their damn homework.

This weekend Lindsey claimed he was duly elected as a delegate to the state Republican convention but had been barred from the proceedings by the powers that be to prevent him from casting a vote for Trump's slate of national delegates. Mollie Hemingway debunked that, claiming per local GOP officials that Lindsey had been elected as a delegate to his county caucus, not to the state convention, and that he'd never showed up at the county caucus to run for state delegate. He was barred from the state convention, in other words, because, er, he wasn’t a delegate to the state convention. Could that explain why Lindsey, seemingly uniquely among Trump supporters at the Colorado convention, had trouble getting his credentials? Well, no: Like I say, the narrative calls for chicanery somewhere in this process, so the new story is that Lindsey may well have missed a meeting -- but only because shadowy operatives loyal to Cruz wanted him to.

Nominate me -- I'm totally unprepared and I just bullshit my way through everything.

I like that type of character in Bill Murray movies, but I don't think I want a President Winger.

Ben Domenech coined a claim that I really disliked when I first heard it -- he said that the Trump campaign was "identity politics for white people."

I found that pretty ugly, suggesting, as it did, that the only reason to want a wall was racism.

However, I am finding some truth in it. The core tenet of Identity Politics is that your own tribe is pure, and that your own tribe is oppressed, and there is always some great conspiracy of the other tribes -- the vicious, ugly tribes that want to keep you down -- who are responsible for your failings.

Identity Politics is at its core simply a racially (or gender-) tinged Conspiracy Theory. All new pieces of information -- particularly information about people not wishing for you to have political power -- are simply new evidences and exemplars of the Conspiracy Theory.

This guy's showing up at the wrong convention, then admitting maybe he missed a meeting, then blaming his failure to do the thing he wanted to do on The Man Just Trying to Keep Him Down, sure looks to me like a warm, sloppy embrace of the most repulsive aspects of Identity Politics -- the constant naming of scapegoats for one's shortcomings, failures, and missed opportunities.

This sort of politics of resentment works, to a degree, because nothing animates people politically like the feeling that they're being unfairly treated.

But like most politics of resentment, it ultimately becomes very silly and self-indulgent, as people keep upping the ante as far as their claims of oppression and tribal disrespect and shadowy conspiracies of the Out-Group to keep the virtuous members of the In-Group down.

That's not to say that Trump supporters, conservatives generally, or Americans as a whole don't have good reason to feel resentment. I feel resentment, and I think a lot of that is justified.

But then, of course, blacks have good reason to feel resentment at the nation -- but that doesn't mean they haven't gone off the deep end with their privilege patrols and #SafeSpaces and claims that noting Obama plays golf is a racist put-down.

And that's what I think I see right here -- resentment simply feeding off itself and shitting out new resentments. Guy shows up to the wrong caucus in Colorado? Damnit, he must have been tricked and duped by those wily Ted Cruz operatives.

Everyone remember when Colorado announced its convention rules? That's right -- last August. Seems to me that that should be plenty of time to read a damn two or three pages of rules and deadlines.

But no; some people are eternally late with the rent money, and you know, it's always someone else's fault for that. My cousin Chicky? Yeah he was supposed to repay me some money for his alpaca farm start-up. He didn't come through for me. It's his fault the rent is late. Why don't you call Chicky and see if you can shake some money out of him? At least maybe you could get a few alpacas to tide you over.

It's never our own fault. Even when it is our own fault, it's really someone else's fault -- in a deeper way. A deeper truth demonstrates that we are faultless.

We're the Good Ones -- the Pure -- the Oppressed. The #Unprivileged. Definitionally, we cannot do wrong.

And meanwhile the Alex Jones friendly Drudge site shits out another series of "They're all against us" headlines.

It's not the only reason.

It's just that, oh, a great number of people who REALLY, REALLY want and agitate for the wall, are doing so not because they're REALLY just so worried about security, or concern about illegal immigration affecting jobs or American wages, or anything like that, but instead because they want to keep those brown folk out, by god. 9 The only reason Trump would need to secure these delegates would be in case of a 2nd vote. There won't be a 2nd vote, so spending time/money to ensure pro-Trump people were delegates when Trump saw a clear path to 1237 would have been a waste of time and dollars. And remember, Trump is self-funding, so this process of 'securing' delegates can be very expensive. It has nothing to do with Trump being 'disorganized' and everything to do with the big business, lobbyist dollars supporting the Cruz campaign and other GOP candidates, which gives them practically unlimited funds to compete at these micro-levels.

Trump is playing the big board...get to 1237 and the delegate selection process does not matter. Cruz and anti-Trumpers want to make is seem as if Trump is 'losing' by pointing this stuff out, but Trump is still winning. Will win 6 or 7 states in a row by big margins and will blow it out in California in June. Game over.

All this talk of delegates will be over.

The prohibition was a dumb law, but Cruz was the Solicitor General of Texas. He was obligated to defend the laws of Texas in court whether he agreed with them or not. It's bad enough that dullards on the left try to tar Cruz with this, but it makes me stupid for giving Drudge the pageviews when he links it.

I actually got a robocall from the Trump campaign yesterday (I'm in NYS) which surprised me and made me wonder if he's put together some kind of GOTV operation here.

Trump had a big rally in my town a couple days ago too, as did Kasich and Sanders.

It's odd to get this much attention here in NY. Normally the GOP primary issue is decided long before our vote date comes, and the general is always ceded to the dems.

I can't remember a time when presidential hopefuls have campaigned so much here in our state.

25 mov,

Not that I am an expert by any means, but from what I've been reading, every state sets up the rules for delegates differently. However, the delegates a candidate 'wins' in a state MUST vote for that candidate on a first ballot. I believe that is the convention rule as well as the state rule.

Though each state may hand out their delegates differently in a primary/caucus. There are also 'unbound' delegates in some states, I am not sure which ones...and I am not sure what the process is to secure the 'unbound' delegates.

Once again, this is a meaningless worry if a candidate gets to 1237. Which Trump, and only Trump, is on track to do.

29 >>>Question here, I've seen it both ways. Are the delegates bound by state law or by state party rules? Or does that vary from state to state?

I dunno, I think it varies a lot from state to state. In flordia, for example, they are bound through *three* ballots, not one. And some states send many of their delegates completely unbound, including on the first ballot (PA, for example).

Some states have elections for the delegates as their primary, as in Illinois -- the Cruz people elected there are real Cruz people, as he recruited them. Trump's too (mostly-- who knows with Trump's delegate recruitment).

But they can vote however they like.

46 "The idiot can't even negotiate with county-level GOP officials, and he can't even outfox Ted Cruz."

Maybe you don't get it...if you have millions and millions of dollars to spend given to you by lobbyists and big donors, you can hire a LOT of people to go into those 'county-level' meetings. If you are self-funding, you need to be judicious about how you spend your $$. If you are WINNING the delegate count and see a path to 1237, why in the heck would you spend possibly MILLIONS of your own dollars to secure delegates that don't need securing?

It is called budgeting and making wise monetary choices. I am sure if Trump took a bunch of donor money, he would also have this big 'ground game' we keep hearing about (that doesn't seem to be helping Cruz win over voters very much). Monday late afternoon as I was leaving writers group, the bottom of the clouds fell out and it rained so hard I could barely see ten feet while driving. Then pellets of tiny hail joined in to machine-gun my car. So pulled into a parking lot, ran from the car only to get soaked like a drowned rat, and ate dinner while while waiting the storm out.

77 "identity politics for white people."

You went there.

Trump seems random. Perhaps he is. Or maybe not.

His complaint about fairness in Colorado is not based on consistency or ideology concerns.

I think it is based on what resonates with people who power his campaign.

This site has a lot of people who participate who are not thrilled with the GOP, with the process, etc. Why does Iowa go first? Every time? Why were the primaries accelerated? Why were there closed primaries here and open ones there? All of those things were created to make an environment for a Bush to come in and sweep. It did not happen that way.

All of that, to various and sundry people, seems "unfair." Countering that feeling of unfairness by saying "well you just aren't smart enough to get the rules, are you?" just compounds the problem.

I get it, this isn't Nam, there are rules. People need to follow them. But its kind of hard to say vote for me because I am an outsider and then say, well, I am ALSO a super insider!

This isn't an argument that competence in the mechanics doesn't matter. Of course it does, and often noted, it is something Trump claims is a strength.

But - and this is important - there are voters for whom that failure to be the ultimate insider mechanic at political intrigue
is a positive, not a negative.

It is why Trump is the leading candidate even today. Not getting that is not getting the whole Trump campaign, something that everyone has missed. I sure did. I don't know how many Walker-Haley 2016 posts I made from 2012 on, but they all seem pretty quaint.

Colorado was not cheating, but it certainly had the appearance of it with the football spiking of "We stopped Trump"

Also I heard on the news that Trump says the RNC is conspiring against him - it was reported incredulously, can you believe what he is saying? - as if #NeverTrump simply doesn't exist.

Please tell me how much money Cruz has raised and from whom? Tell me how many PACs are running anti-Trump and/or pro-Cruz ads and events? And who is funding those PACs?

You actually want to compare what Trump is doing to Cruz? Cruz is bought and paid for by GOP donors and lobbyists. In fact, Cruz just invited wall street bankers, lawyers and traders to an event in NYC. If Cruz were really all about his supporters, why isn't he running a campaign similar to Bernie Sanders...where he raises money from his actual supporters, rather than lobbyists, GOP insiders, etc.?

Trump IS self-funding b/c he is NOT taking money from lobbyists and big donors.

and then there were some unpleasant years after the civil war where they were the bottom caste -- often legally, and not just socially.

157 "There won't be a 2nd vote, so spending time/money to ensure pro-Trump people were delegates when Trump saw a clear path to 1237 would have been a waste of time and dollars."

Spot on.

Trump may get to 1,237. If not, he'll most likely be short less than 100. He can bribe enough delegates with positions in his new Administration and/or trips to Mar-A-Lago. If needed, Kasich can deliver a First Round Dowry of 66 bound Ohio delegates just by saying the word -- it's Kasich's only pay with these delegates.

Cruz is behind in every upcoming primary poll, often by a lot, and often behind Kasich. Cruz will be mathematically eliminated from 1,237 in a week. He'll be far behind Trump in delegate count going into Cleveland. His running as a spoiler will only become clearer by the end of April.

Can Cruz really wrap up 1,237 delegates for the Second Ballot. Who knows, but's he's skpetical. He has to say he will, else he'd have to quit. Romney & Co are the ones who have been too late to the party -- if they wanted to stop Trump they needed to have started six months ago. To some extent, Jeb and Romney and Rubio do what they do because Revenge of the Nerds.

MSM needs to keep Cruz in the race, else there's nothing fun to report. Trump says he's going to shift to giving Presidential policy speeches. The horror!

Cruz is less the principled Conservative than you think he is,

Oh I don't think so. I have never said that he is Mr. Perfect Conservative, he isn't. I think Cruz would let me down too. I don't worship the man you know. But he is a far sight better than Trump when it comes to conservative cred.

208 You know - the financial restraint excuse would have been far far better than the victim "they are stealing it" bullshit Trump ran with.

If he came out and said "I'm self funded, I'm not going to take lobbyist money just so I can organize at a granular layer - I'll let the voters push me to 1237 and I promise when I get there, I will be beholden to the voters and the voters alone"

But no - instead we get victim bullcrap. Trump has had so many chances here to really push himself well over 50, but he screws it up every time with his bullshit nonsense.

And let's be honest - a simply website could probably get his people enough information in these states to do the things he needs them to do (like show up)... unless he's going to hire the same people who put together the obamacare web site - I don't think that costs all that much to research the rules and to do.

209 Not sure how anyone can say Cruz can't win the general election, when the alternative is Trump. Maybe Cruz won't win, but why would anyone think Trump has a better chance? He is massively unpopular outside of his fanatical group of supporters (which isn't large enough). Cruz at least has a shot at uniting people, whereas the way Trump is running is campaign that is impossible for him. He is deliberately stoking people's fears. Anyone who disagrees with him is immediately characterized as a liar, a cheat, ugly, dumb, and/or evil. There is no disagreement with him that is legitimate in his eyes.

238 This is my take on what is going on.
When Bush was President, I always had a feeling that he spend his days behind a desk or at meetings or listening to advice from his team about how to solve problems, formulate policy and implement solutions. You knew he got up early and read newspapers on a treadmill. With Obama, I don;t think he ever actually does the work of being President, just fundraising, traveling, gallivanting around the world enjoying the percs of being a head of state. Kind of like being a King with no real responsibility for anything that happens.
That's how I see Trump. He does not want to do the work to actually run a campaign, organize the grass roots, prepare policy positions and learn them. In his business, he just opts out when the going gets tough. He takes no responsibility for his failures. Everything he does from his political donations to his charitable ventures is always to benefit Donald Trump. Why does anyone think he will actually do the hard work of being President anymore than our malignant narcisisist currently occupying the office.
Meanwhile, Ted Cruz is doing the hard work of a campaign. Opening offices, organizing grass roots volunteers, creating an infrastructure that will help him actually win in November. I see him behind the Resolute desk with the statue of Churchill returned to its place of honor surrounded by trusted advisors who don;t always tell him what he wants to hear.
He has my vote.

They fought Trump tooth and nail from the beginning and he was backed by people like Drudge and (to a lesser degree) Rush, so it'll very very easy to call him the most conservative nominee since Goldwater (it won't be true, but neither was it true that Romney wanted to illegalize tampons). They'll say, "We tried your way, now it's moderates or nothing."

None of it will be true, but it'll be the narrative that pretty easily backed up with just enough facts to make it plausible.

Trump nomination (especially with a general election loss) = stronger GOPe.

I think the fear that Cruz is either a Trojan Horse or an establishment dupe to knock out Cruz for someone else to be parachuted in is misplaced.

Cruz's team hasn't spent all these months working the grass roots to recruit delegates so they could pick people that would ultimately vote for another person like Kasich. Trump and Cruz will combined have an overwhelming number of delegates pledged to them, many of whom on a second ballot will go for Cruz because his team recruited them.

The delegates have to understand that rejecting Trump who is almost assuredly going to have the most pledged delegates, is a big deal. Turning to someone other than Cruz, the one person who will have done the most to defeat him for this nomination, would be crazy. It would tick off both the angry disaffected voters Trump represents as well as the movement conservatives & grassroots activists that Cruz represents.

The convention in Cleveland is in July, when there will be less than 4 months to the general election. That's not enough time in a huge nation like ours to try to unite a party around a totally new person without a base of support AND try to win over independents & like-minded democrats. It has to be either Trump or Cruz.

The only way I see this going to someone else is if Trump loses on the 1st ballot (or knows he will), and decides to throw his support to someone else like Kasich. Now, would Donald Trump do such a thing knowing that he'd badly split the party and probably cost it the election? Hmm...

264 If Trump shows up a hundred delegates short he's gonna "persuade" enough of the unbound to get over the hump on the first ballot.

Trump is very VERY smart. He took out Romney part deux aka Low Energy Jeb and McCain part deux aka Little Mario (seriously Mario is a sweaty McCain 35 years ago w/ black hair). Cruz couldn't have done that. I mean Cruz can't even get a delegate lead on this alleged clown car in a dumpster fire Trump fella.

Trump has been wildly successful in business. The vast majority of us would have lost his fathers inheritance - just like all those lottery winners who end up broke. And the claim that an index fund would have made him more money? That analysis does not take any of Trump's personal living expenses into account - such as alimony, food, housing, ect.

So again, if Trump shows up a hundred delegates short he's gonna "persuade" enough of the unbound to get over the hump on the first ballot.

If Cruz pulls an upset in NY, then we can talk. Until that blue moon, this Cruz multi-ballot stuff is the equivalent of locking yourself in your stateroom pacing back and forth while whispering that this GOPe-Titanic is unsinkable.

265 A note about Virginia and a correction for the article listed... while the Trump campaign has not organized and totally missed the deadline to get his people to sign up for the district and state conventions, he does have some grassroots support in most districts and they made the effort to at least sign up for consideration as national delegates. Those people do not seem to have put the same effort into recruiting votes at the conventions.

The 9th district convention is the only one that has been held so far and two Cruz delegates and one Trump delegate were chosen (I do not know the makeup of the alternates, however). I would expect similar results in most, if not all of the district conventions.

I'll go with the one who actually has a better shot at winning the general election, which, according to actual evidence (like polls), is Cruz.

Also, he obviously has the desire to win and to fight tooth and nail every step of the way. I'd rather have that chance than Trump's ad hoc strategy.

270 So, Cruz makes one statement that is offensive and Trump makes them every day but Trump will be the better candidate. No Republican is going to win New York anymore than they are going to win Massachusetts or Connecticut.
Seriously, why does Trump want to be President?

Posted by: sharon at April 13, 2016 12:27 PM (QzF6i)

271 Hey ace, theft by definition is still theft regardless of whether it is legal or in keeping with the rules or not. See IRS. I won't disagree that Cruz is playing by the rules, the problem is that the rules are a form of corruption.

Stick your nose in the air all you want about what a Zulu Warlock Cruz is, see how far that kind of attitude goes to persuade normal people that feel disenfranchised.

The right to vote and have a say is central to our system, how many have died on the battlefield for that right? You've got Benie people being fucked by DNC Superdelegates. You've got Trump people being fucked by the GOP and Media in every way possible.

The problem right now is voters are not being represented, no taxation without representation and all that. The current system is such that there are two parties that dominate everything and we have no choice but to submit to the will of those parties. The laws, the rules, all of it is designed to give them ultimate power over the process. End result is the party cabals choose our choices for us. People should be upset.

I truly do not understand how people can choose this con man Trump over a principled conservative.

As has been said ad nauseam - anger.

The GOPe were given a golden opportunity to stop the dog-eating crackhead in his tracks. They were handed cases like Lois Lerner and Planned Murderhood where they could have shown spine, lit up the Capitol with righteous rage and made high-ranking people pay real penalties.

But they rolled over for Obama, they let Lerner laugh her way out of the room and let a literal apologist for outright murder wriggle deftly off the hook.

And when Trump came along, blustering against a do-nothing establishment and an outright treasonous MFM, rather than considering "I say, this New York fellow might have a point," they decided to strike back with condescension and a hefty dose of "fuck you, you proles." Not to mention throwing their support behind candidates who explicitly went out of their way to tell the GOP base that if they had any reservations about open borders, they were nothing but a bunch of racist honkys.

Trump may well be an ill-prepared, vainglorious, cocksure con man, but he sure as hell has ripped the masks off an inordinate number of "moderate," "reasonable" voices in this worthless hunk of a political party.

286 So once again the consensus here is that:

Even though Cruz will be mathematically eliminated from 1,237 in a week, lose the next six primaries in April, sometimes coming third to Kasich, he'll then -- with the help of Romney-backed super PACs -- turn that around with his Mad Organizational Skills by making sure that delegates picked by actual voters are instead actually committed to Cruz, so that after Rule 40 eliminates any other potential choices, and after Trump loses the first ballot, the GOP will have no choice but to pick Cruz, given that he'll have stacked the delegate pool in his favor, whereupon he'll be the nominee, and survive the Dem/MSM onslaught that he wants to take away Social Security, let people die on hospital doorsteps, and bring back wire hanger abortions, and that he's a creepy, creepy Televangelist, to convince Joe the Plumber in Ohio that he's really, really for the little guy, and Manuela in Florida that's he's really, really Hispanic, and then usher in a new era of Constitutionalism, whatever the that means, and all will be well.

320 Trump has been able to work this "corrupt" system to his advantage up til now. Open primaries, allowing independents and democrats to vote for our candidate, winner take all states and an unbelievable amount of free advertising via talk radio and TV made it easy to grab votes before people began to realize how unprepared Trump really is. Now closed primaries and caucuses and other methods where only Republicans get to decide are benefiting Cruz and his name recognition and policies stand out with fewer candidates in the race and all of a sudden, the process is unfair.

I definitely think it is inconsistent. Trump is "burn it down" personified. I don't know- maybe some people realized that what he is most likely to burn down is the Republican party. When push comes to shove, I'm just not sure how many here are enthusiastic about having Democrats in complete control of the federal government for the foreseeable future.

No "may" about it. He is ill-prepared and all the rest. You're also totally right that he's exposed a lot of people. I'll always be grateful to him for driving Jeb Bush out of the race. However, just because he's saying the right things about several important issues and helped thin the field a lot doesn't make him the right nominee.

The goal is to win the general election, and do something to stop illegal immigration, reduce legal immigration, rip out Obamacare before it destroys American health care, etc. Trump can say the words, but he doesn't really know what to do to accomplish them. He's a smart guy with good instincts, but he misjudged what it would take to win this nomination AND the general election. He's not going to beat Hillary Clinton relying on free media and celebrity status. It will take a hard aggressive GOTV effort and rallying all wings of the GOP to support him. He hasn't built that infrastructure, isn't willing to spend what it take to build it now, and has spent the last 6 months alienating much of the GOP base he needs to vote for him. Cruz has done the hard work and built a campaign that's unfolding over all 50 states including hostile territory like New York. He obviously can't stand Trump, but he hasn't trashed Trump's supporters in the nasty, personal way that many #NeverTrump people have.

I will vote for whoever gets the nomination because as a swing state voter, I don't have the luxury of venting my spleen with a write-in vote. We have to try to win the White House, hang onto the Senate/House, and get that Supreme Court nomination. If Trump is the nominee, he gets my vote despite how little I think of him or his chances of victory in November.

344 Hi,

Why is it that Trump does not have even passible surrogates?

Ben
Carson is so obviously conflicted about supporting Trump, and Sarah
Palin's incoherance seems worse than ever. How is Trump going to do
well in the general without better surrogates?

Cruz' surrogates do a much better job, pehaps because he is running on policies, and not on a cult of personality.

This will matter in the general, as the campaign will have to be carried on in the entire country, and not state by state.

Trump will be dependant on the RNP for his ground game, go to Vote, and perhaps even financing.

Even
Cruz' detractors agree that he has an excellent campaign staff, and
grassroots organization, and that Cruz and his staff are very
disciplined and hard working.

If Trump wins the primary, the
democrats will parade individuals who have been injured by Trump and his
companies, as well as attacking Trump on every ill thought out policy
he has ever supported, as per normal.

Trump can get into the
weeds with anyone, but how well can he defend policy positions? Can he
win anyone over with anything other than charm and bluster?

Cruz
can only win the primary by winning over detractors, and by succeeding
in uniting much of the party. He will at that point have demonstrated a
skill set that will make him competetive in the general.

The GOPe will owe him too, for saving them from Donald Trump.

Plus, he'll be head of the party, and, until (if/when) he gets elected president, he'll have one of the most prominent bully pulpits in the nation.

There's a reason the GOPe doesn't nominate true conservatives for president and then try to win them over afterwards, and it's not because they think they can control someone who rose to power as a firebrand. They want someone copacetic to their views already because they know that once you achieve that spot, they have very little power over him/her.

History is a good lesson here. A small (but illuminating) example from a very different era is the election of Zachary Taylor. The party nominated him because he was a blank slate and a war hero, but they couldn't convince him to say the right things on slavery, so they sweated hard until he came out with the Allison letter which ended up saying just enough (but ultimately nothing at all) which made them feel better.

I totally get your point and it's very valid.

I just feel like very specific criticisms will be harder to dodge by both Hillary and her media allies than wild barrages, most of which may not even have much of a connection to reality.

It would become "Well, he said X which we know is completely false, so Y must also be completely false."

390 I think Trump just really, really likes attention and media. I don't think he really wants the job, but since he's also a "winner" he cannot be a "loser" and thus needs a scapegoat.

Thus, Cruz "stealing" his win.

Trump dismantled his Ohio and Florida offices.

Who does that going into the general?

I also now highly suspect the Clintons know Trump enough to know how to flatter him to get him to run.

They knew he'd be a turd in the punchbowl.

397 I read drudge and Ace. Politically I lean libertarian. I think that we are screwed badly due to how contentious this has gotten. Regardless of who the nominee is, our choices (all of them) have so much crap attached to them that a criminal witch will be the next president. The media will have a field day and many who were so enthusiastic about "their" candidate with stay home due to the demoralization of the Republican nominee. This depressing thought led me to wonder if I needed to be more open minded in terms of a candidate. Then I thought of a question that I think might help negate the nastiness of my guy vs. yours, which is: "What is the one thing you absolutely want the next president to work on/address/fix? My answer to that question was that I want the rule of law. I want politicians, bankers, regulators etc. who have broken the law to be charged, tried, and hopefully convicted for their crimes. Every single one regardless of party/political affiliation. I don't think we can address the economy or immigration until we have rule of law back in force. What do you want?

Posted by: lightning at April 13, 2016 01:05 PM (AP+SF)

398 This has probably already been said multiple times on this upthread but delegate loyalty doesnt just matter in the first ballot , it matters in rule contests and adoption of the platform , both of which occur before the nomination. It matters on a VP nomination too. Given Cruz's organization and Trump's lack of it, cruz will have good communications with his delegates .
If Trump thinks he is going to lose he will bail out and whine.

I have said this here many times but it is worth saying again. It is Christianity and Judeo-Christian that allowed the development of a whole hols of social goods including our system of government as it was founded. It is sad we have come to the place that Christianity has been so demonized and driven out of the public square that gay pride parades, and all the concomitant near or complete nudity and perversion is OK but public prayer is not. This needs to stop.

nature abhors a vacuum and the vacuum in the public square is being filled with forces for destruction and control. Liberal fascism and Islam are filling the void left from Christianity being marginalized so, whether you believe in God or not, you should be down on your knees praying for a resurgence of that Old Time Religion. Without is, you have no rights but only the beggar's portion that the state allows you.

Not really. A store decided to challenge the law in court so the state in the person of the solicitor general had to respond.

He could easily say I don't personally agree with the law but my job was to defend the laws of the state of Texas. I did my job. If people want the law changed that is the job of the legislature.

404 I still want to know why Trump wants to be president. Making America Great Again is a slogan, not a reason. Reducing the national debt, returning to the principles of the Constitution, restoring balance between the branches of government, renewing ties with our allies are reasons for wanting the reins of power. Build a wall(but maybe not everywhere), deport all illegal immigrants(but let the good ones back in), be neutral between Israel and the Palestinian Authority(or maybe not), take ME oil(or maybe destroy the oil fields), kill the families of terrorists or tear down their houses or waterboard them, hire all the best people(like Corey Lewandowski), pick Conservative judges(like his liberal sister). You can tell Trump has really thought this thing through.

Hillary (and Bernie) already have proposed laws - massive tax increases, free this, free that, that will all actively destroy the country.

Cruz or Trump, either they maintain the status quo (very likely btw with Cruz the more establishment debt he accrues in this campaign) or they are able to push back.with even just one thing.

Trump has to build his Wall, that's his signature. He'll try to renegotiate China trade because he's always railed against China, way before this race.

Cruz doesn't really care about immigration, maybe he will be able to cut down the IRS. He'll be great for the 2ndA and for picking a SCOTUS judge. He doesn't really get economics, he just follows the standard Chamber of Commerce stuff on it.

That's how I see what happens of any of these 4 win.

Did not read any stuff by Hillary or Bernie)

===============

In a vacuum, I could see how that your argument would hold water, but with the failed campaigns of Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio behind us I see the GOPe settling with Cruz because he doesn't offend the GOPe as much as Trump does.

My theory on the GOPe's antagonism towards Trump is twofold: 1) They don't like his personality. He gauche, and rough. He has no real refinement. And 2) They do want to win. Their theory on how to win doesn't jive with ours, but one thing that they can do is read polls and they see Donald Trump losing in epic fashion to Hillary.

Plus, on top of all of this, in order to believe that the GOPe will steal the nomination from either Trump or Cruz, you have to believe that they will convince a majority of Trump and Cruz delegates to turn from them.

That seems extremely doubtful considering Cruz's organizing prowess, both Trump and Cruz's relative popularities within the party, and the GOPe generally ineffective nature. They gave Jeb Bush $100 million and couldn't get him better than, what, 5th place? I don't think these people are going to convince delegates to turn to Marco Rubio now if they couldn't convince the people to go with either him or Jeb Bush back then.

What evidence do you have that says that Trump is more electable than Cruz?

Is he more liked by the Republican Party, guaranteeing a greater turnout from the party itself?

Is there a coalition of voters (like, say, married women) that the GOP generally wins that he's doing at least as well as Romney in? Would his (largely unsubstantiated) increased support from blacks make up for his loss of support from such groups?

Does he do better with independents?

How many general election polls is he running ahead of Cruz in? What about state polls? Can we ensure that Trump won't need to ensure that we spend money in usually safe states like Utah and Mississippi?

I'm open to your evidence. Please share it.

450 "I'm open to your evidence. Please share it."

Start with the 2012 electoral map. 538.com has a good interactive one.

Trump should be able to hold all the Romney states, which are nearly all Reliable Red. (Ace posted a MS poll which purports to show Trump weakness, which I looked at and thought suspect. Ace posts a lot of suspect anti-Trump things). Cruz should also be able to hold all the Romney states, but he hasn't had the buckets of pig blood rained on his head yet.

Trump can expand the electoral map by winning states like FL and OH. In the FL primary he killed Homie Rubio and won every district except for Miami. In states like OH he can win by getting 5% to 7% better non-college white turnout than Romney did. This would be lower turnout than what Obama got from Blacks in 2012.

Hillary is a weak candidate who's getting weaker. Trump should be really good at driving her negatives up. Which sets up a turnout battle -- a lot of Independents and many Dems who would never pull an R lever will stay home -- which is half-a-vote for Trump.

If Trump adds three to five states to Romney's map he wins. He can lose the popular vote by 5 million and it won't matter. He can lose MA and MD by 30% and only win UT by 10%, and it won't matter.

I can't see Cruz adding a single state that Romney lost. He won't be able to convince Joe the Plumber in Ohio that he's really, really for the little guy, and Manuela in Florida that's he's really, really Hispanic.

The pushback is that Trump's negatives are too high especially with women, and it's a real issue. But this adverse effect is concentrated in states that are already Deep Blue. Ace and others also point out head-to-head matchup polls in the general but these are always suspect so far out.

Cruz negatives, especially with women, are sure to go up and by a lot if he becomes the candidate.

I've put this analysis out here before and have never gotten a good rebuttal. But YMMV.

452 I'd swear Trump is playing a presidential version of "Brewster's Millions"* by throwing away his presidential bid in order to win something bigger. I just can't imagine that a presidential run adds so much to his "brand" that he makes millions more then he's spending in deals later on.

*Movie with Richard Pryor, & John Candy where Pryor's character inherits 30 million but has to spend it all in a set time and be penniless to inherit 300 million and can't tell anyone what he's actually doing.

453 Ted Cruz is fine with more immigration and with taking tons of money from Wall Street, where his wife works, after talking about how awful the bank bailout was. He is no less dishonest than Donald Trump or anyone else in this contest. If he's willing to sell out the country to the immigration lobby and the banks, he's not really a conservative, either.

Ted Cruz, like Marco Rubio, largely rode the Tea Party wave into the Senate, but unlike Marco Rubio, he is not likable enough for the Establishment to accept him.

In the general, the Democrat attack machine will rip him apart, and he won't be able to handle it. Trump is still standing despite the fact that our party has turned on its front runner with more firepower and hatred than it ever used against Obama. Ted says some nice things, but he isn't a viable candidate, and if he loses to Hillary, it will be the death knell of the conservative movement.

P.S. If he's so awesome, why can he not manage to outmaneuver Kasich in many states? Why does he hardly ever win primaries, only caucuses or states where people can't vote (Colorado)? Because he's just a used-car salesman.

Name me one Romney 2012 state he'd lose with a 5% to 7% boost in non-college white turnout. Hillary won't get Obama's Black turnout, nor his Young turnout.

"Non-college white" is by far the largest cohort out there, but they've been ignored by the Rs and actively alienated by the Ds.

470 Fact: Colorado set the rules in August.
Fact: 65000 people voted in CO.
Fact: Trump fired his man in CO late last week.

This tells me that Trump and his org failed to use the system in place to win.

There is the argument he is playing the bigger game for 1237 made before. If that were true why fire the man.

If they really did not know the rules, he and his org are incompetent. If he did know the rules, he is lying to us for the sake of press attention.

Which is he incompetent, or dishonest.

477 "Ain't it obvious that Trump is doing a demolition job on the Republican Party and conservatism? Who benefits; besides Trump?"

America. The removal of a party indistinguishable from a fake opposition party and the cutting off of people with conservative instincts from sympathy with the failures of the Republicans is all to the good, as you can form a real opposition, that actually OPPOSES THE RULING PARTY out of them.

"Disgusting to see Limbaugh turn into a Lord Haw Haw for Trump and Breitbart and Drudge into Trump Pravda like propaganda outlets. Fox is Trump's Isvestia."

THREE SEPERATE METAPHORS IN A SINGLE SENTENCE IS OVER THE LEGAL CONVERSATIONAL LIMIT, BIGOT!

"Who would have ever thought that Limbaugh, Breitbart, Drudge and Fox would be aligned with Alex Jones/Info Wars, Roger Stone, and RT News in support of the same presidential candidate?"

Who'd have thought useful and effective democratic coalition building would ever have to include the left as well as the right half of the conservative Bell curve? The young as well as the old? The Russians as well as the Americans? The populists as well as the ideologues? It's almost like a "window" or "tent" is being "widened" (under the three metaphor limit there, check it out.

479 Hey ace, theft by definition is still theft regardless of whether it is legal or in keeping with the rules or not.

Posted by: #NeverHillary at April 13, 2016 12:27 PM (HeK4a)

The problem with this argument is it presupposes the Constitutional Might of the parties. The Parties are social clubs that nominate people for office. They have no standing, and we are very glad that they aren't run by government burocrats. If parties want to have primaries, I think they should pay for them themselves.
