Since they saw that LL escaped charges they know they can be guilty as hell and free as a bird. Like other federal regulatory agencies they are supposed to be nonpartisan. In 1966 they dedicated a song about it.

By "The New Vaudeville Band," a studio outfit created to record that one song, who then had to record and entire (ghastly) album because "Winchester" sold so well. I wouldn't bother to search it out; it's the worst kind of 1960s middlebrow dreck, the sort of we're-too-cool-for-this snarkiness regarding the actual 1920s just oozing off the vinyl - a case in point being the song "Whatever Happened To Phyllis Puke?"

Also, "Winchester" was one of Frank Sinatra's worst covers. And the Chairman had a lot of those.

Today is a literary story, so adjust your monocles, elevate your pinky and sip your tea as I relate:

Louisa May Alcott never liked Little Women, even though she wrote it; she considered it the sort of sappy treacle other, lesser "women" authors pumped out, much preferring her "serious" novels The Inheritance, Work and Under the Lilacs. But it was LW that paid the bills.

And did more than pay the bills: it was so successful that Alcott's impecunious, spendthrift father, Bronson, developed a habit of traveling from Concord to Boston, home of Alcott's publisher, Little, Brown and Company, in search of cash. "Just charge it against Louisa's royalties," he would tell them. Bronson's sponging became so regular and draining that Louisa finally had to call a halt, and thereafter, Papa got money from Little, Brown only when he could produce a written authorization from Louisa.

Legend has it that, somewhere in Little, Brown's archives, there is a framed not from Louisa reading, "Please give my pa $50." Pa, thoughtfully, crossed out the "$50" and made it read "$100." Nobody knows whether or not he got away with it.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

45 I'm up all night with a terrible cough and I've taken way too much cough syrup to try to get some relief. The stuff makes me loopy and ponderational so I'm thinking about the universe and Creation v. Big Bang Theory and all sorts of philosophical musings as I try not to cough myself into an early grave.

Questions, questions.

What is the outer boundary of the universe? Is it the location of the farthest star, or is it the ever-expanding point that star's light reaches?

Understanding the concept of entropy, can any serious person believe that trillions of insanely complex living processes and organisms created themselves out of nothing through random mutations and chemical reactions happening over enormous periods of time?

How is The Big Bang Theory's "the universe exploded into existence from a infinitely dense, infinitely hot, infinitely tiny point in space" different than "let there be LIGHT!"?

I think too much but it takes my mind off of being under the weather.

48 A piece at the Free Bacon yesterday, talking in considerable detail about the disastrous failure of the New START nuclear arms treaty:

http://tinyurl.com/jz4schr

My own summary back when the treaty was being discussed in Congress was that it amounted to having the Russians retire obsolete weapons in exchange for the USA retiring modern weapons. Such a deal! And that the whole thing was reliant on Vladimir Putin serving as a trustworthy counterparty, when of course he could be expected to game the arrangement ruthlessly.

A goat rodeo from the get-go.

As the article makes clear, that's just what we got. But there are three even worse aspects to New START that are not discussed in the article.

(a) The improved Russian nuclear weapons systems which Putin is now deploying are specifically designed to evade and defeat the weak, paltry U.S. ballistic missile defense setup. The new Russkie warheads are hardened, stealthed, have decoys, and use active maneuvering and unpredictable trajectories.

(b) America didn't just disadvantage itself strategically versus Russia with what the USA gave up in New START. America also disadvantaged itself versus China. Which is a steadily larger strategic nuclear threat all on its own.

(c) The Republican elder statesmen of foreign policy -- the Colin Powells, George Schultzes, Richard Lugars, and Brent Scowcrofts of the party -- all lined up and bleated that New START was a brilliant and important advance in arms control. And it was barely debated among the Beltway GOP before they voted with the Democrats and Obama to pass it. This, on a matter where quite literal national survival may one day hang in the balance?

I would describe that last failure as being proof of the intellectual bankruptcy of the Republican establishment, but really, it's proof of worse. Of a bankruptcy of simple common sense. Calling these people "intellectuals" is like referring to a stale room-temperature McDonalds burger as haute cuisine.

You sound like me. I once wrote an epic 3-page comedy routine about the nature and meaning of life when I was under the influence of NyQuil, Sudafed, and Whiskey.

Among the many, many improbabilities I pointed out was the fact that since we're just the random byproduct of atoms smashing together, we should do totally random things. Like building orderly civilizations that don't let us do random things.

90 I'm still shocked by that story about the woman who married the muslim when she was 16. She had 5 kids and 2 years ago they all moved to syria and joined ISIS. There were photos of dad marching around with severed heads and his young son holding one too. The 13 year old daughter, who really looks like a child, was married off and had a kid at age 14. Dad and her husband were killed by drones. Mom had an appendix attack and died from lack of medical care. So, you have a 14 year old now caring for her own baby and her 4 siblings. Grandma tried to get them out but failed. Said her daughter made a mistake. Not quite. It wasnt a bad hair day. Her daughter enabled murderers and put her children in danger.

I agree. They might claim they follow the same God, but things they believe make that impossible. The God I believe in would not command his followers to do as they do, thus I must reject their claims.

I agree with the Byzantine Emperor Michael II, who put it thusly to some diplomats from the Islamic empire of the day: "Look at what is new in Islam, and there you will find only evil, such as the commandment to spread the faith by the sword." The reason Pope Benedict was so hated by the press was for quoting this obvious truth early in his Papacy.

When I was younger I used to fall for that " we all worship the same God under different names" pablum, but the more one explores other religions the more ridiculous that idea is.

I think that there is a universal impulse to search for Truth and the Divine, but many of these paths lead to false gods.

And many of these false gods are powerful in their own right, which is how so many are deceived.

Well, the veggies at Whole Foods or in the organic section of produce departments at regular grocery stores look pretty good. However, they don't taste any different to me and "organic" is not enough to justify the higher prices. I go to WF only because it's very convenient and I don't want to drive to another store just to buy an onion for a recipe.

The produce at farmer's markets is pathetic though, just like you said. Farmer's markets can be good for buying stuff like homemade bakery or preserves; but again, you can find it cheaper elsewhere.

It's not just that muslims don't believe in the Trinity; they believe in a god who is the complete opposite of the God that Jesus the Christ described. Jesus said "God is Love." Corinthians describes what Love is. Love would never tell people that their daughters are less worthy than their sons, or that they have the right to rape conquered women, or that they are obligated to subjugate, maim, and murder non-muslims.

Muslims claim that they believe that Jesus was a great prophet. How can someone believe that Jesus was a great prophet, and NOT believe everything He taught about the nature of God?
