Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Bill Clinton: Unlike When I Was President, The World Is Coming Apart Right NowThese sorts of stories are part of a general narrative. The narrative that accompanies them is that Bill Clinton keeps looking for ways to take shots at Obama and undermine him. The idea lurks in the background that this is all part of a piece with his "racist" campaign against Obama in 2008, and that he's never gotten over it. Perhaps. But I can't help but notice that this a very thin-skinned, Obama-protecting narrative, that seems likely to have flowed directly from Barack Obama's own cramped, self-justifying, self-pitying brain, and the similar hive-brains of his acolytes, ever ready to defend the Great Black Dope from slights to his person whether they actually occurred or not. Previously, in early March (was that a century ago, or is that just me?), Bill Clinton had "trashed" Barack Obama's economy, as the Federalist put it.During a campaign stop for his wife in North Carolina on Monday, former president Bill Clinton trashed President Obama for painting a "pretty picture" of economic recovery that doesn’t line up with reality. "Millions and millions and millions and millions of people look at that pretty picture of America [Obama] painted and they cannot find themselves in it to save their lives," Clinton said. "People are upset, frankly; they're anxiety-ridden, they’re disoriented, because they don’t seem themselves in that picture," he said. "Hillary is running for president to put every single American in the picture President Obama painted."Video at the link. Then, on March 21, Bill Clinton decried the "awful legacy" of the past eight years. (And the seven years before that, he added.) "But if you believe we can all rise together, if you believe we’ve finally come to the point where we can put the awful legacy of the last eight years behind us and the 7 years before that when we were practicing trickle-down economics and no regulation in Washington, which is what caused the crash, then you should vote for her," Clinton said.Video at the link. Quote is from the next following link. Now is that Clinton taking a sneaky, bitter-defeated-rival shot at Obama, or is that Bill Clinton just noticing things that are actually true? In politics, it is the rule that you do not notice things that are true if they happen to undermine your party's narrative and political position, so this could easily fall into both categories: Bill Clinton just saying things that are obvious and incontrovertibly true, and being a dick getting political payback by saying something obvious and incontrovertibly true. With this background, Clinton now turns to what a disaster Obama's foreign policy record is, though he'd better be careful -- his wife has a co-author credit on this.* During an appearance in Philadelphia, Clinton said, "Unlike when I became president, a lot of things are coming apart around the world now."I don't know if Bill Clinton is really going out of his way to put down Obama or if it's just... unavoidable. How can you talk about the last seven years as anything other than a disaster on all fronts -- economic, security, social? And bear in mind the general model of any election is that someone runs as a continuity candidate, versus someone who runs as a change agent. But that is only possible if there is something that people actually want to continue the, um, continuity of. Hillary Clinton is forced to play a half-in, half-out game on continuity, because Obama's braindead zombie cultists absolutely demand that he be shown that "respect." But she's also running as a "change" candidate -- and this will be much more obvious in the general election, when she doesn't have to appease the Obama Minions as much. The point is, both candidates, whoever they may turn out to be, will be running as "change" candidates in the general election -- implicitly repudiating eight years of Obama's diastrous misrule. Because he's a bad president who's a prisoner of his relentless dogmatism for his bad, musty-smell-of-1968 ideas. And Bill Clinton is really only preparing the field for that turn in general campaign season. Reality is coming, Obama. * Assuming he wants his wife to be president, which some people doubt. I do think he wants his wife to be president, because it ultimately aggrandizes his own ego. No one will doubt that Hillary only became president due to her husband, and Hillary would represent the Clinton Restoration to the throne. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I sometimes wonder if as conservatives we would just be better off making the Democrat Party more centrist than trying to influence Republican races.
I don't like Bill Clinton, but if the Democrat Party had embraced Clintonian Centrism, this country would be so much better off and the Stupid Party losing wouldn't be such a big deal. Posted by: Jeepers at April 07, 2016 03:17 PM (wM5Gx) 5

Assuming he wants his wife to be president, which some people doubt.
I think that's an unknowable, like whether there is life after death and what do girls talk about when we're not around. If we're playing Presidential psychology, I think Clinton wants to undermine the senseless fawning over Obama and restore his image as an actually good President. I know Clinton could have been more proactive about Al Qaeda and 9/11 lies partly at his feet, but we did have eight years of peace and prosperity. You don't even have to point at what he did to ensure that. He happened to be there when the tech revolution made everyone richer and more efficient. But he passed the first test, don't fuck it up. Obama fucks the things up. Posted by: Bandersnatch at April 07, 2016 03:21 PM (1xUj/) 18

I mean, just leaving out the Stupidity and Ignorance that are at the core of this so-called centrism, why bother with it? Clinton is a shallow obviously pscyho doofus who stumbled into office with 42% of the vote in America's first modern un-serious WTF who cares election, was a disaster in his first term, a laughing-stock really, who then rode the wave of idiotic indifference and laziness of a country enjoying an economic boom into a second term, where he was even more of a disaster, was steamrolled by an opposition Congress his idiocy helped create, and committed felonies in office which should have made him the first president removed from office. Oh - aside from degrading the country and the office with his personal behavior, which is separate. And he's an ignorant mediocrity who turns very nasty the instant this baffling sycophantic misinformed treatment of him stops. "Trickle-down economics and no regulation" - OK, somebody explain to me how this idiot is any less cretinous than Sheila Jackson Lee or Babs Boxer or Patty Murray or Nancy Pelosi. By the way, with regard to "the tech revolution" producing ongoing miracles of productivity growth in America, well, it looks like that wall has been hit. And it ain't budging further. InstaTwitFuckFaceBookGram social media isn't actually resulting in any improvements in output. A dour view of same from the UK financial press: "Productivity - or GDP per worker/hour - is actually falling. 'US companies are hiring people frantically because they are unable to get more out of their existing workforce. This is not a good omen,' he said." "Indeed not. It means the US economic speed limit is collapsing, with dire implications for the debt trajectory and the pension system. Business is soaking up labour slack rather than investing in technology. The cycle will hit the inflationary buffers sooner." http://tinyurl.com/zg5ykfz Posted by: torquewrench at April 07, 2016 03:28 PM (noWW6) 50

The biggest departure from reality is when the Clinton's talk about Obama's Foreign Policy in the abstract, like it's some distant, inconceivable product of someone else.
Look at the reality we are living in. Take a better look at what The Hag actually stated and did when in office. It's one disaster after another(the ME and Egypt, Syria, etc. Russian Reset and the Ukraine anyone?). Shit, she's responsible for the rise of IS with the policies she pursued in Iraq- the entire rush to "pull out" and the mission accomplished around that, against almost every piece of military advice offered. Bill Clinton took the year to year trade status of China and created a permanent most favored designation for them. Looking back, 60, 000 plus American factories closed, and around 5, 000, 000 Americans lost their jobs. His response? Bush should have kept an eye on them. Interesting question. Posted by: Anna Puma at April 07, 2016 03:42 PM (qjrXu) 110
Seems par for the course. Back in 2000, Al Gore didn't run as a continuation of the administration he'd supposedly been a part of. I wasn't thinking of myself as conservative then but a moment that really made me wonder about these people was when Gore's VP pick, Joe Lieberman, desperate for something he and All would supposedly fix, declared that the NASDAQ was at its lowest point since the Depression.
That doesn't make any sense. A few minutes of checking online and I knew what was bothering me: the NASDAQ didn't exist during the Depression. It was formed during the 1960s (Bernie Madoff was part of that effort when he was still legit) and didn't start trading until the early 1970s. But Joe needed something to talk up to make it seem like he and All had a list of things that needed fixing and they were just the guys for the job. This also stands out to me as the difference between identity politics and a belief in the nation created by the founders. If I applied the same mentality as certain other groups, I would have had to vote Gore-Lieberman because I'm Jewish and Lieberman would have been the first Jewish VP and possibly President to follow. Yet I felt nothing in that regard. I was far more concerned about Lieberman talking nonsense and his attacks on video games a few years earlier. I needed the country lead by someone who shared my beliefs on government, not my ethnicity. Posted by: Epobirs at April 07, 2016 03:42 PM (IdCqF) 111

"Dramatic" differences between Clinton and Obama are mostly illusory, in a practical sense, so paying attention isn't the question, using one's reason apparently is. Obama effing campaigned with "centrist" nonsense themes in 2008 - or were you not paying attention? Balanced budgets! Efficient guvamint! On and on. Whatever trappings of power from being the spouse of a politician, you've had it all, why not move on? Bill and Hillary are about power. Staying married maximized their power. They were perfect partners w/the Foundation - State merger for 4 years, raking in *billions* by selling her influence and lord know what else. Clinton's comments don't sound like a criticism to me, but rather a defense.
As in, "When I became President, the world wasn't falling apart like it is now--the Berlin wall had fallen, Bush Senior had decommissioned the tactical nukes, we were looking forward to a peace dividend. Obama's got a plate full. We need someone (my wife) who can handle all this crap." Posted by: Hurricane LaFawnduh at April 07, 2016 04:12 PM (laMCB) 247
CNBC did a study and determined that the BLS initial call on quarterly GDP was +-1.3% of the final value determined months later when all the data was available.
So, when the Q1 GDP came in at 0.5% yesterday, they called it meaningless because the final value would be between -0.8% and 1.8%, which meant you had no idea if the economy was going forward or backward. Posted by: Jihad Joe at April 07, 2016 04:12 PM (+C5m6) 248

I didn't like Clinton much in office. He's sleazy, he appointed a bunch of shit to the Cabinet, some feel he was a Great Communicator but to me his voice and his manner always said "I'm bullshitting you, and you know it, and you know I'm going to get away with it." But he was almost a paragon of competence compared to Bush 43 and it's impossible to compare him to the present filth. His position in history will be as the target of Congressional overreach, an impeachment on what most of the public regarded as trumped-up and with no prospect of a conviction. The GOP broke for two generations the impeachment arrow as remedy for Presidential misdeeds, and that's indeed tragic as the current guy needs it rammed up his ass until it comes out his throat. First, the Clintons have raked in billions w/their foundation. Given that less than 10% is ever spent on foundation works (building stuff in Haiti, etc.) this is just as lucrative as Gore's work. The foundation covers all of their living expenses. Second, they want power. This has been an excellent vehicle for Bill to travel the world, speaking and meeting w/VIPs just as he did as president without most of the accountability to actually solve any of the issues he's discussing. Being a Republican, it turns out, means for the now #NeverTrump "principled true conservatives" what it always meant to the bow-tie wearing James Lileks of the world. It's something you say at a party to make yourself seem different, then you prevaricate for three hours until you've walked back to a moderate liberal stance. Having strong principles you never act on is the same as not having any principles at all. This embrace of the GOP as the best means to stop Trump turns the whole concept of "principled" true conservatives on its head. It's a bold stance with its tail in its mouth, consuming itself. We had wonderful guides in Jo-burg, Pretoria, Cape Town, and in-between. All of them had fought against apartheid and personally knew Mandela. One guy we're staying in touch with, was imprisoned and tortured, but is for reconciliation and forgiveness. He despises the corrupt government they have in power now.
He asked us about our feelings on Obama, and we were frank. We told him race relations were a disaster under him, along with the economy and everything else. Cyril, our guide, said we weren't the first Americans to tell him that. We came away with such a fondness for the lovely people we came to know over there. I'm sure that everyone will claim that it's all Trump's fault for not playing the game. Yet the facts are that thousands of voters votes have been disenfranchised by the GOPe. Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at April 07, 2016 04:25 PM (Xo1Rt) Delegates were not voted on and won by Trump... a primary was. 27 delegates are chosen by district convention and by the district delegates and 28 delegates are chosen at the state convention. They are all bound for the first ballot and after that they are unbound. The district and state delegates are free to choose any of the delegates to the RNC they want (so long as those delegates are candidates)... whether those delegates support Trump or not. This is not new... the process was known (or knowable) to all candidates going in. So, yeah, it is Trump's fault if he did not make sure that there was slates of Trump favorable delegates for the state and district conventions to vote on (or did not recruit delegates to those conventions to do the voting).
