Defunding universities requires eliminating both federal student loans and bankruptcy protection for private student loans.
As far as state universities are concerned, although they could have their public funding removed it would be far better for state governments to assert their power and take control of their state university systems from their current, incompetent administrations.

So of course, the Detroit news stations were there to interview students. They went to every woman wearing a hajib of course. Most said they were "scared'. One did stomp her foot and said that "neither terrorists, or Donald Trump was going to define her religion".

Really not sure I want to even bother. In past years almost the only kids with any clue were young military vets - they were completely different than the others, far more worldly (well duh).

He told me to come in and just let the nukes fly this time, as of course he has FIGMO about the situation. But I'm so discouraged by the state of things, not sure I'm even up to it. Though it would be funny to outline how Congress has surrendered its limited influence on foreign policy, and highlight some examples of the disasters of the current admin. and the Dems current prez front-runner.

I'm with you in principle but not in application.
Personally, I think all education should be paid for by the consumer directly but I concede that doing away with public primary education would be a bridge too far for the short term.
Again, basic free market provides a simple solution. Vouchers. Parents pick their teachers and schools. Your kid isn't getting the education they deserve? Take them and the voucher somewhere else. No need to mess with unions, school boards, or any of the other ridiculous bureaucracy. There will be no money left for the shit schools or teachers and the good schools and teachers will be flush with cash. Let them whine about tenure all they want to on no paycheck and no students.
I, along with all the other people who don't have children, will be taking my voucher and writing it off as a tax deduction. I'll be generous, for now, and let you borrow my money for 12 months, interest free to support your kid's education. On April 15th, I get it all back out of your pocket.

ROC tend to be more tolerant and 'western' than a lot of mainlanders, 'tis true. But I've been privileged to know a number of mainland girls who sorta dig the 'forbidden' aspect of being with a westerner.

I didn't say "outside country." Japanese was one of my minors during undergrad. Gaijin is literally the kanji for 'outside' and the kanji for 'person.' Yes, 'gaikokujin' is more formal, and gaijin can certainly be used pejoratively. But we're also talking about a country where it's impolite to call someone by their first name. I certainly don't put it on the same level as ethnic slurs.

US military was unpopular there also. When the base was destroyed the Philippine Government couldn't allow it to be rebuilt. Times were good and China wasn't threatening.
There was a documentary about the group monitoring the eruption. Some guy they didn't interview was always being quoted by the people they did interview. A General was in charge and he came across as a poor leader. The quoted guy used his wit to save their asses. Otherwise they would have been buried under pyroclastic flows. Something about hope you have marshmallows in your pockets for the weeny roast.

My maternal grandfather served in both theatres. Poor bastard was in the Philippines when the unpleasantness began, but eventually made it to Europe.
I've read his letters to his mother, my great grandmother....amazing for a man with a fourth grade education, the sort of insight he had.
He was on his first amphibious assault - location redacted by the censor - and he was just sort of walking from the edge of the shore inland, when a japanese popped up out of nowhere, put a pistol right up against his helmet, and pulled the trigger.
The shock knocked him unconscious - the round penetrated his helmet and the liner, but lacked enough oomph (it was probably the angle) to do much more than cut his scalp wide open.
In that moment, he said he realized he was going to die, and he said afterward, he'd lost all fear of the inevitable. He was, evidently, something of a berserker until he got to Europe.

Not that I really understand Mersenne primes. Some sources say 2 is a Mersenne prime, which makes no sense to me, but then again I'm not a mathematician.

Much the same as my own uncle. Never claimed to hate the Japanese in later years but the stories of thw what the G.I.s and Japanese would do to each other in the process of fighting was something else. He an 18 year old kid and all at the time.
He too brought back a battle flag with something inscribed on it. Maybe it's the names of the troop like yours but we've often thought about having it translated to find out. Came back with an Arisaka too that he said he pulled from a Japanese solider that he personally killed.

I just re-read Fred Lieb's book about his life in baseball. He talks about the trip he took to Japan (in 1933, IIRC) with an American all-star team, and how beloved the players were in Japan. Less than a decade later, our countries were embroiled in some of the most brutal fighting ever. Funny how quick things can change.
Speaking of WW2 and baseball, when some American soldiers would shout "To hell with Hirohito!" at Japanese soldiers, it was reported that some of the Japanese soldiers responded with "To hell with Babe Ruth!"

I can't imagine what he - and tens of thousands like him - went through, or how they managed to have normal lives after.
I always thought that returning those trophies was his was of finally getting clean. I remember the man always washed his hands, constantly washing them, and he'd douse himself in florida water cologne a couple times a day. I think he never lost the memory of the smell of war.

One was an ubershauptsturmfuhrer my Pa had taken prisoner - they remained good friends all their lives; hell, he said Pa saved his life, and was a sort of senior uncle to me when I was a kid - and, through a friend, I met his grandfather, a Romanian who served in the Soviet Union.
That Romanian...he hated Germans almost as much as he hated Russians. He described the way they'd throw them into the battle to cover wehrmacht withdrawals, armed with only a few mg's and maybe, if they were really lucky, anti-aircraft guns depressed to fire at ground level. And the cold, he said, was unbelievable.

Anatoli Davidovitch, one of my chums, was a Leningrad veteran. he described the starvation rations of sawdust and burnt wheat salvaged from under the floorboards of the distilleries made into less than 300 gram loaves of bread that they were expected to survive on.
He talked about the first time he ate rat, and how grateful he was for a bit of meat.
He described living in a cellar and watching the woman next door, with two sons. Gradually, one of the sons stopped losing weight while she and the other began to resemble a skeleton. His mother was starving herself and the older son to save the younger.
He described going into battle his first time at 17, armed with a spoon and nothing else. He talked about seeing his officers machine-gunning their own men.
He described fighting hand-to-hand with a 10 or 12 year old boy who reminded him of his kid brother, and of killing this child with an entrenching tool.

Oh, I forgot--the practical answer is that the pressure increases at the rate of 1 atmosphere for every 33 feet of depth. Space is hard, but deep ocean is hard too. Though perhaps easier with ROVs. Still, in its own way, a rough environment.

I was alive, don't remember it happening.
I also don't remember the USAF dropping a live nuke off the coast of Spain, but have read about it. They spent a lot of money trying to find it and get it back. Not sure if they did, but I'm guessing they did.

Went to a seminar once were one of the engineers who worked on in in GA gave a talk at GA Tech. They were testing the reactors and engines in the middle of a forest. Lead shielding was going to be put between the reactor and pilots.

Not entirely. There's some theories about bending space that are credible enough that NASA is looking into them. The upside of it as a propulsion method is that you don't have nasty relativistic effects. The downside is that we might (or might not) need a negative-mass particle... which is also theoretically possible, but out of reach for now.

Not sure about safety features on the various Broken Arrow crashes/mishaps, earlier. But recall they told the engineer (think he passed away in the last 2 years) for the Hiroshima mission, the day before, that he would have to arm the thing in flight instead of pre-flight, as there was uneasiness in the brass about Tinian being suddenly bye-bye in the event of a crash.
I think being involved with the nuke testing program in the 50s/early 60s had to rank as one of the best jobs ever. Have an idea? Let's blow it up! With a nuke! Money - no problem. Just think - unlimited funds, cutting edge science and engineering, world travel, tropical and desert locales, vital national mission - and you get to blow shit up. Heaven on earth.

Was it Georgia? Did you find the tracks and weather stations? They had two weather stations set up for shutting the reactor down if bad weather came in. They had a pretty simple roof and would fry over head birds.
