Is There Any White Knight That Can Emerge From the Shadows at the Convention?

Imagine this plausible scenario:

Trump does not get to 1,237, and has become even more unacceptable to the party as a whole than he is now.

Trump carpet bombs Ted Cruz and makes him even weaker in the general election than he is now.

Kasich continues being Kasich.

Assuming the convention is contested and Cruz has been too damaged to be a strong candidate (a plausible thing because you know Trump's not going down alone), and assuming the party rewrites the rules (as you know it would, in this situation) to permit delegates to choose virtually anyone--

Can anyone think of anybody who would 1, be broadly acceptable to the party regulars, and 2, look good in a general election, that can suddenly emerge from the wreckage?

And no, not Paul "Professor Open Borders" Ryan. F*** that guy especially.

And No... Not other people who have already been rejected soundly by voters, like Rubio and Jeb.

Boy the Establishment just never gives up, huh?

53 I've been a Scott Walker enthusiast from the beginning, and personally would like to see him get the nod, but seriously think of this:

He dropped out the race and never won a single delegate. The counter-argument from the Cruz and Trump voters will be hard to dispute:

So, Walker gets handed the nomination by quitting at the start of the race, while Cruz and Trump fight like hell and take their lumps for months and months, only to have Walker and fresh and pristine step back into the race at the last moment and waltz across the finish line in first place? UNFAIR.

That's all true. It will feel like theft.

At this point, only Cruz or Trump deserve the nod, because only they have fought for it to the end.

93 No, there isn't.

If Trump (or Cruz) get the majority, the party is bound to nominate him. Whether it's a good idea or not.

If the party bypasses the system and arbitrarily names someone else, you disenfranchise all of those voters and kiss a united republican party goodbye forever.

And you know, maybe that's would be a good thing at this point.

Because think about it, if that scenario happens, it will only be the establishment telling their base to F off and electing THEIR guy, some open borders corporate donor shill RINO who can't wait to run into Harry Reid's office with his pants down.

99 Ace- we are going through something new this time around.
Sure contested conventions have happened before, but that was in an era with much less communication.

With 24/7 news stations, blogs, social media, everyone who is interested is much more savvy than before.

So, NO. There is no white knight that would get the "party" and I quote that for a reason, to coalesce behind.

The delegates and actual card carrying party members may well be happy with a convention pick not on the ballot, but the supporters of those candidates who were rejected will likely walk away from the process, and cause a landslide win for the weakest Dem candidate since Carter.

Posted by: OneEyedJack at March 31, 2016 03:04 PM (kKHcp)

100 what does fair have to do with it?

Posted by: ace

It has this to do with it:

Many "GOP voters" will just stay home if they feel the party insiders simply ignored the primary votes and undemocratically selected their Chosen Man.

The disgust quotient will go through the roof, even if the Chosen Man is "acceptable."

Americans hate being disrespected and deceived. A party-chosen non-Cruz non-Trump nominee will feel like a stab in the back. At that point, I would actually have to concede that Hillary will win easily, simply by default because only Democrats will show up at the polls.

He simply failed in running in this election. Otherwise, he has been a pretty good success. Your pickings are pretty slim if you are looking for someone outside of Trump and Cruz who did well this year. Did Walker fail to catch on - of course. But that doesn't mean he wouldn't be a decent choice to heal the wounds of a broken convention. He is still the guy that took on the progressive left in WI. He is the one who battled in election after election there.

Romney's argument is that he won more delegates and more voters than anyone -- albeit in 2012 -- and that the 17 who ran in 2016 are by definition losers. He'll say that he nearly beat the charismatic Obama and is the one to beat Hillary. Add Kasich as VP to win OH and PA.

And after Trump, the "total outsider" probably won't have much luster.

241 Playing this out, and with recent events of Trump tripping on his dick and Cruz really not getting people excited - a new candidate is picked. Who out there can really excite the base, draw in independents and get them all to show up on election day?

If that happens, whomever comes out with the party's nomination must be someone that will excite the base for it to be successful. Anything less and it's time to dig the grave of the GOPe. Though that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing at this point in time.

There is no acceptable republican. All republicans at that level are part of the Uniparty/Globalist cabal that seeks to undermine America at every turn.

So, to answer your question, no - there is no "white knight". Sure, there may be someone that a majority of "r" voters buy as a "white knight", but that person will, if elected, simply continue all of the policies of the last 16 years.

there is almost no hope for America. Because not enough "conservative" voters have woken up to the reality. And, if they haven't at this point, they never will.

At that point we're talking about "degrees of unelectability."

In your scenario, both Trump and Cruz are unelectable, but a substitute nominee would ALSO be unelectable.

It has also been forcefully argued that both Hillary and Sanders are unelectable too.

I agree with all of it. Trump, Cruz, Hillary and Sanders are completely unelectable, as would be any substitute GOP nominee.

BUT, if they're ALL unelectable, then suddenly they're all electable again, because ONE OF THEM IS GOING TO WIN.

The whole exercise is getting silly. I stick by that assessment. Want to get out of the silliness and into a spot where people can start turning down the volume on their emotions - and it is the panic-stricken emotions that are running everything right now - and be productive? Start asking real questions:

(1) What issues are the issues this race is turning on?

(2) No, not the issues you want them to be, but the issues that are.

(3) What candidates are believable on those issues?

(4) Can these candidates close a sale?

(5) Do these suggested candidates have any actual constituency in the party?

(6) Have these candidates the fire within to go out and win this?

(7) Have these candidates agreed to this abuse before you float their names?

That's just in my mind since we are no longer doing a bar-stool exercise but are actually trying to put a real operational campaign plan together at the beginning of April.

346 *shakes head*

I have no interest in nominating Trump but I cannot believe we're arrived at rooting for backroom deals to override the electorate.

I am "glad" (entirely the wrong word but lack a better one) that Cruz benefits from the LA shenanigans but really... that's bullshit.

I am so sick and tired of this two party stupidity. It's brought us nothing but disaster. Every damn election we have to hear about "electability" and everyone's raving about making sure the "party" has someone that is acceptable to everyone else. Everyone who get's elected is whipped and threatened to support The Party over their constituents, or else. Meanwhile we all go on pretending that we still live in a Democracy, much less a Republic which ceased to exist decades ago and going nuts every four years about who the next farce is who will "Save the Republic!"

It's a joke. There is no part of any of this that even remotely resembles the Constitution anymore. There is no consent of the governed much less government by the people. The saddest part of all of it is that the vast majority of people don't care and are running head long into making things even worse.

Am I exaggerating? Pick whatever candidate you like from any of the past or current presidential elections in the past several decades. Go down the list of their positions and promises and tell me which of them actually falls within "solemnly swear to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution or the United States" or anything resembling powers or responsibilities allocated to the Executive Branch?

Every day in this cycle, we have people who have had it on with the GOP on the basis of Constitutionality... yet cheer to candidates that are promising to dramatically expand Executive powers even further.

You know, I kind of hope that the convention goes full retard and Trump ends up running third party. I hope the same happens with the Democrats and Bernie get's the majority of the regular delegates and it turns into a shit show about super delegates. I hope we go in the fall with all four of the current leading candidates running against one another under different banners while the parties nominate some other imbeciles.

Enough with the farce. Bring on the next civil war already and let's get it started with the Parties that brought this whole shit show about.

It is mathematically impossible for Trump to win as a 3rd party candidate.

See Eno's column at Conservative Review:

"Trump Independent Run All But Impossible, Ineligible in at Least 13 States"

Now consider if Trump still does run 3rd party and thus, no one gets to 270 electoral college votes in the general.

It goes to the House to decide between Hillary, Trump, and Cruz. No others may be considered.

Food for thought.

If we want to lose to Hillary in what should be an election impossible to lose, we pick any of the establishment people - from Walker to Perry and everyone in between.

If we want to lose in a landslide to Hillary, we go with Cruz.

The hard core establishment republicans, those who depend on the party for their employment, lobbyists, etc. will only vote for an establishment pick, but they are a tiny number. They will end up voting for Hillary as Ace will.

We have one hope of recapturing all the disenfranchised Trump voters and the vast majority of regular republicans, along with white working democrats and a bunch of women by going with Mike Rowe.

One major issue is the way the Electoral College works...

Most States are pretty locked in politically... so the Presidency is decided by who KowTows to the few swing states the most.... that's where they spend all their time and effort...

And the Parties WANT it this way....

What should happen is each Congressional District should get ONE Electoral vote (for who wins that district) and the whoever wins the States should get the Votes for the Senators...

Right now, because of the Bay Area and Los Angeles, my vote is taken for granted, even though MY District is pretty Conservative...

Even if there was (and it would have to be like Jeff Sessions running on protecting the country from Mexico and islam himself, or someone we have fond memories of, *like* Demint or Newt), he's going to appear at the convention and have to go straight into part 2 of your question, which will immediately turn most of us off.

And he'd have to continue the anti-gope themes that took Trump to prominence, which means they'll never put him through the convention anyway.

470 I think Trump supporters would be apt to stay home more if Cruz gets the nomination since he would directly be blamed for stealing the nomination. A person who wasn't involved in the primaries would be more acceptable to them.

Is this a guess or is it based upon anything?

my guess (note level of spitballin') is that trump supporters would be more amenable to someone who actually ran from beginning to end over someone who got installed.

That.Is. A. Guess.

1. There are over 100 elected members to the convention committee. Many will be in Cruz's camp. They won't change this rule and even if they did it would likely never be changed in favor of someone who didn't run in the primaries.

2. It probably doesn't make any difference anyway since the delegates themselves vote on things like rule 40 (it was amended from 5 states to the 8 state threshold last time around by the delegates, not the convention committee.)

3. Even Rince Priebus said he thought it was unlikely the delegates would alter Rule 40.

I don't think they will be changed unless Cruz doesn't get 8 states (he should have this by next week though), and Trump doesn't get to 1237.

545 If the GOPe were smart, (I know, I know)-

there's a simple solution to this dilemma:

and one that they've used before.

They need to replay Reagan/Bush with Cruz.

Sure, they don't get what they want with Cruz.

But, he's part of the Party, so that's a minor win for them.

And just like with Reagan, they know that after 8 years of Cruz, they can have 4-8 years of the

Bush-like Substance as Prez to reset things back to their way of liking.

We win as we get a real conservative. Plus, if he follows Reagan's basic road map,

we get an awesome economy for roughly 30 years until the GOPe and Dims finally load on enough BS to fuck it up.

Really, this is their only intelligent play. And one that lets them carry both the House and Senate as well.

Buuuuuuut, they're too stupid to go this route.

567 The problem with the "white knight" scenario is that the GOP is still in complete denial as to what created Trump's success in the first place. the GOP has doubled-down on all the things that created Trump.

so, it is highly likely that a large swath of Trump voters will not vote for said "white knight", which will doom that person as a candidate.

It's also questionable, at this point, whether these voters - myself included - will vote for any down-ticket GOP candidates.

I see no difference between the GOP and the DNC - and before people start lecturing me - I'm talking about actual actions - not rhetoric. This claim that the GOP will accomplish this or that conservative goal is not supported by any historical evidence. Which brings me back to the first point - the GOP is in complete denial about what created Trump's success.

And, I'm not claiming Trump is conservative. I'm arguing that voters are fed up with being lied to about every single issue by the GOP. I'm arguing that voters are tired of being called racists by "conservatives" and the GOP for not wanting an amnesty and for wanting border security.

Everyone who is so upset about Trump's success is whistling past the graveyard. Stopping Trump wins you nothing. It solves none of the problems that led to Trump's success. Likely it will exacerbate those problems. Coupled with the derision aimed at people supporting Trump and why would anyone in that camp vote GOP again?

It is you who are cutting off your nose to spite your face. You claim to want to "save the party" by defeating Trump, but all you are doing is exacerbating the problem.

And again - I don't claim Trump is conservative or even a great candidate. But he has been successful for a reason. And, despite what you believe, it is not because everyone who supports him is an idiot or racist or whatever else you tell yourselves.

I agree with the rest of what you said but will note that there should be a rule change to rule 40(d) and hopefully will be. 40(d) doesn't even allow the votes for candidates that did not meet the 8 state majority rule in 40(b) to be announced and counted. 602 I guess we need to start by explaining politics to everyone...

First off, this is not a year that a politician is going to win in. So, if your favorite candidate has held public office and has a record, you need to move on.

Second, the vast majority of voters don't vote on issues. They vote for the tallest, best looking, best smile, person they most want to have a beer with, etc. Sure, you want someone who shares your view on narrow policy issues, but you're only 5 or 10% of the electorate.

Third, when the dust settles on the these primaries, pretty much everyone on our side is going to be damaged to one extent or another. Rowe would be untouched.

Fourth, his Q rating is through the roof. No one dislikes him, so he'll probably take every state.

645 599 Read up on some Brokered Conventions.

It's usually the 3rd or 4th place guy.

There aren't really that many contested conventions in modern history to look at and hardly any brokered ones. So this factoid probably doesn't apply this year.

But the thing is, Trump has been terrible at mustering supporters at state conventions to be his delegates. In fact, there are Cruz people being elected as Trump - 1st ballot delegates, in states like Georgia as we speak.

Trump is such a terrible manager that his ostensible delegates at the convention will vote for Cruz if Trump can't win on the first ballot.

So this is a rare year when the leading contender for the nomination is such an organizational disaster that his own delegates aren't really his.

Turns out that Cruz is a better businessman than Trump is.

"The most" doesn't matter... as much as Trump supporters (and Trump himself) like to pretend that there are special unwritten rules that justify them rioting if they don't get what they want, there are not. THE RULES say the nominee has to get 50% +1 (1237 delegates). If Trump does not get that, he will not get the nomination and nor should he. The less than 40% do not get to dictate to the 60% who the nominee should be.

Exactly so.

The delegates control the convention, not the rules committee. Yes, the committee proposes but the convention votes.

Plus, the rules committee is going to be risk adverse. Changing the rules to favor someone like Kasich would be considered to be dangerous by the committee plus, lots of Cruz people are on that committee.

Further, there is the practical aspect of the fact that the only reason to change the rules would be to favor someone who they think would be preferable and, as this thread shows, no one fits that bill that can win.

Better for the delegates to have their say.

There is going to be wheeling and dealing on subsequent ballots but most of these delegates will be unbound by that point. So it's not like Rubio or Kasich can force any of their people to join with someone else.

Most of these delegates will be activists and will see that Cruz offers the anti-establishmnetarian position without the Trump vulgarian narcissism. This is why they will move to Cruz.

In fact, if Trump were not in the hunt right now, everyone would see Cruz as the burn-it-down candidate.

If Trump can't get to 1237 even with all the "first past the post" primaries that already award an outsized proportion of delegates to someone under 50% but ahead of the rest of the pack, he really hasn't earned the nomination and the convention attendees owe him nothing but their pledged votes on the first ballot. To suggest that the "first past the post" rule be extended to the nomination itself is like a double-mulligan for Trump. How many does the guy need, anyway?

Posted by: HTL at March 31, 2016 04:18 PM (NAWno)

708 Not that paranoia is unwarranted but you guys are ascribing too much power to the GOPe. The delegates have to pass the rules and will not if they are amended in the fashion you imagine.

So healthy caution is smart but tin foil hats are not... this is not 2012. If it were, Jeb! would already be the candidate.

What I'm saying is that Cruz is proving to be a great administrator to match his political talents.

Sure, the guy is obviously the smartest man in any room he walks into and that means he knows details. But he has also amassed skilled campaign teams on the national and state level. Essentially, he is the CEO of a major, national organization. And yes, it's a business.

The fact that Cruz is killing Trump at the organizational level tells us a lot.

Now, that doesn't mean that absent his constitutionalism, I would vote for him just because of his administrative skills. I vote for the constitutionalist first and the business acumen second.

But it's ironic that Trump can't manage his own campaign to save his life.

715 "The most" doesn't matter... as much as Trump supporters (and Trump himself) like to pretend that there are special unwritten rules that justify them rioting if they don't get what they want, there are not. THE RULES say the nominee has to get 50% +1 (1237 delegates). If Trump does not get that, he will not get the nomination and nor should he. The less than 40% do not get to dictate to the 60% who the nominee should be.

I am not talking about rioting nowhere in my post did I mention that. I am talking about enough of his supporters sitting out the election all together. Same goes if Trump does get the nom, there's enough Republicans that would stay home. Either way it's a loss in the general.

i agree. As does the party. They have realized that they can't surpass him, but they need to prevent him from walking in with 1237.

Got that.

I also get that they are vilifying him now because when round #2 comes round, they want people to start defecting from him to someone else.

That's also part of this process.

Got that too.

Who is, and who might become eligible as of round #2?

If it remains the top two, then Trump is still in it.

if the field expands somehow, Trumps' chances worsen, (which most people want), but if/when that happens, all the questions raised here come to the fore.

if it stays between guy #1 and guy #2, will we see the GOP throw genuine support behind Cruz? We certainly aren't seeing it now.

Romney won the nomination outright without any rules change. They didn't even need to change rule 40 from the 5 state threshold to 8 to stop Ron Paul last time out since I think he only got a majority in 2 states anyway.

It will have meant that he had to fight his way back from the dead to derail Trump. In the process, I'm assuming that this would make him a much better candidate, as he will have had to earn the nod at a brokered convention by being the person who demonstrated that Trump could be stopped. I feel like we're already seeing signs of Cruz improving as a candidate. Plus, he would have a monstrous apparatus in place for the general election.

We need to remember that it only becomes a "brokered convention" if rule 40 is suspended. At that point all bets are off because suspending rule 40 would take such a gargantuan effort on the part of the GOP bosses that they would have already destroyed the process.

They would then be adding insult to massive injury to install their own guy like say, Ryan.

Ryan would win about one more state than Trump were Trump nominated, that being Wisconsin.

Still, Hillary wins the rest.

747 beeblebrox: "We need to remember that it only becomes a "brokered convention" if rule 40 is suspended."

I don't think that's true. Even with rule 40, anyone could be chosen on a later ballot.

e.g. On convention day, say Trump has 1100 delegates, Cruz has 900, the rest are scattered. Only Cruz and Trump have 8+ states. First ballot: No majority.

Now the delegates are freed. So, say Walker-Mania sweeps the convention. Eight midwestern states's delegates get together and say "we loves us some Walker." In each of those states, more than half of the (now unbound!) delegates sign a statement saying "we're backing Walker". Bang, Walker now passes Rule 40.

The key thing is, *bound* delegates can't sign the rule 40 statement for anyone but the guy they're bound to--but after the first ballot, any delegate can back anyone.

Actually that sounds like a great idea.

Mike Rowe- if he'd be willing- would be perfect. He could get most of the Bernie supporters, most of the Trump supporters, and all the traditional conservatives would go for him too.

The only people left swinging in the wind would be the Establishment of both parties, who would go for Clinton.

Other choices now that I'm thinking:

Tom Cotton as others have mentioned would be a great compromise candidate who could unite the Trump and non-Trump forces. He's fiercely opposed Obama, has gotten things done, and is more charismatic than Cruz.

Bob Corker would be similar- he'd be a choice closer to the Establishment, but he's still lead the charge on opposing the Iran Deal, got SOMETHING done, even if it was precious little, but still has a blue-collar background to fall back on to draw in Trump and Sanders supporters.

He's actually proposed a lot of ideas to oppose Obamacare- things to replace it, things that chip away at it.

Corker/Kasich, with a promise to nominate Cruz to the Supreme Court if elected, or Corker/Cruz, or Corker/Rubio would be a decent ticket.

I understand why so many of you Cruz supporters turn that hard turn into moonbat territory. It wasn't Romney's speech, as I've seen a couple of people suggest in this thread.

It was the death of Justice Scalia. That was when you guys decided that we Trump supporters are just playing a little game of rebellion against The Man, man, and that it was now time for us to put away our game and get serious about the future of our country.

But I am serious. If I've learned anything during this second Obama term, it's that the Establishment will always find something really, really important to dangle in front of us and call us to heel again. They're free to keep getting shittier and more worthless with each passing day, because they can count on the Democrats to get worse, too, and scare us back into the GOP's venomous embrace.

It will not stop until we make it stop.

I want Trump to wrap up this nomination, and force the GOPe to make a hard choice for once... accept the will of our voters, or tear our mask off and blatantly screw their chosen candidate out of the nomination?

Frankly, I'm fine either way. And that's why I sort of resent the fact that so many of you are 100% on board with #NeverTrump, because if you get your way the GOPe will be spared from making that decision.

Also, I think Trump would do much better in the general election than current polls are suggesting, for several reasons, but I've rambled on long enough, here, and I'll save that discussion for some other time.

774 #771: Oh, I've seen that, all right, and I think it's all a big scam Cruz is pulling.

Let's examine one of those "noble stands" from Cruz.

Cruz got together with Paul Ryan to write an editorial in the WSJ to try to sell the general public on the awesomeness of the TPA bill, which would bypass the Constitution and make it pretty much impossible for Obama's Trans-Pacific Partnership treaty NOT to pass through two legislative chambers ostensibly controlled by Obama's opposition.

Once the TPA was safely passed, and the Republican-controlled Senate had held its pretend-vote against the TPP, Cruz came out and said he'd only supported this bill because Mitch McConnell had lied to him and told him there would be no floor vote on some other petty, unrelated bill (the ExIm Bank, IIRC).

The usual GOPe stalwarts (such as McCain, Graham, and Hatch) came out swinging against Cruz for this "unprecedented" breach of Senate protocol. Hatch, as the Majority Whip, promised serious punishment for Cruz, and was certainly in a position to make that happen.

At the time, I cheered right along with you guys. "Just try it, Hatch; I triple-dog dare you!"

But as time passed, I noticed something... there was no effort to punish Cruz.

Not only that, but McConnell himself had nothing to say about the incident.

This is the same McConnell who'd boasted of plans to crush the TEA Party everywhere, and said he'd like to punch every anti-establishment voter in the nose.

Why would he suddenly be so shy about speaking out against a TEA-Party-supported Senator who'd attacked his integrity in no uncertain terms? Why would he not get behind Hatch's plans to punish Cruz?

Another detail that jumped out at me... McConnell was not present on the Senate floor on that day that Cruz had scheduled the time to make that speech.

I'm convinced that Cruz must've worked it all out with McConnell in advance. And McConnell must've told Hatch to back down, in exchange for Cruz not actually calling him a liar to his face.

780 @774 Be fair. The TPA doesn't bypass the constitution.

Requiring by law an up or down vote on a treaty doesn't bypass the constitution. Show me where the constitution requires senators to be able to offer amendments to a treaty or a bill before voting on it.

Also, keep in mind that the Trans-Pacific Partnership isn't ratified yet. Nothing is agreed to because Congress hasn't actually ratified the thing.

Also remember the House is irrelevant for the purposes of ratifying a treaty- only the Senate has to ratify it, albeit it has to do so by a 2/3rds margin.

And the ExIm Bank isn't exactly petty, any moreso than the TPA- it was corporate welfare and it should've been left dead.

McConnell went silent to avoid another government shutdown. He knew that if he actually punished Cruz for speaking out, the conservative members of the Senate would force him out of the leadership in a heartbeat. Nothing would pass by unanimous consent until hell froze over, and everything would've bogged down in the mud. Cruz would've come out on top. McConnell knew when he was whipped.

783 #780: It was a bypass of the Constitution because the Constitution requires a 2/3 vote of the Senate to ratify a treaty.

The TPA called instead for a simple majority in the House and Senate to change that requirement to a 1/3 majority in the Senate to ratify this particular treaty.

Also, McConnell had just easily shot down a TEA-Party-supported primary challenger. And Cruz was polling at about 5% in the presidential primary at the time. Why would McConnell think he was licked right then?

Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler... Ask not for whom The Donald Trumps. at March 31, 2016 10:15 PM (0OG8D)

784 @783

No. It receives an up or down vote.

A majority is still required, in BOTH houses.

It's a simple majority to require a simple majority.

It's also notable that it passes as legislation, not a treaty- so it can be repealed by an act of congress just like it was passed by an act of congress, rather than being subject to the mechanisms in the treaty.

And anything implemented under executive authority (e.g., any implementation that depends on federal rulemaking, like how certain terms are defined) can be unilaterally dismantled by the president as well.

And he's licked because even one person can hold up the show in the senate, causing days of delay. A group of ten or twenty can get him kicked out of leadership with obstructionism.

Posted by: Zack at March 31, 2016 10:31 PM (rEXZX)

785 @783 Also, what it sounds like you think is that you think that they can filibuster the vote to reject the trade bill, which is explicitly not the case.

And even if they could, because they're passing legislation, the trade bill doesn't just pass into law if they don't engage in a vote.

All you have is that Congress is in violation of an (unenforceable) law that lacks civil or criminal penalties attached to it.

787 He says in both instances that "children and spouses are out of bounds.", and then follows up with a remark about Donald Trump's remarks about Heidi Cruz.

Never does he actually directly link his daughters to Donald Trump's statements, and nowhere does he claim Donald Trump ever attacked his children.

It's quite plain that the part about his children is a reference to what happened earlier in the campaign when the Washington Post put out that cartoon about his daughters, and is a more general statements about the limits of propriety in politics.

Posted by: Zack at March 31, 2016 10:44 PM (rEXZX)

788 #785: A treaty normally requires 67 votes in the Senate, as currently constituted, to ratify it.

The TPA said, "we're gonna pretend the TPP isn't a treaty; we'll make it a simple bill, with the exception that if the TPA passes by a simple majority in the House, and gets past the filibuster for a simple majority in the Senate, it'll then require 67 votes in the Senate to override, rather than to ratify, this particular treaty represented by the TPP."

34 Senate votes and a mere majority in the House is thus all that is needed to ratify the TPP, despite the fact that the Constitution calls for at least 67 Senate votes to ratify a treaty.

If all that is needed is 34 votes, the filibuster rule doesn't even apply. You need 40 votes for a filibuster.

795 Here's a funny thought... when Ace was fighting a frivolous lawsuit a couple of years ago, the dockets identified him as a female.

He is now a big-time Cruz supporter, and poo-poos the idea of Cruz having cheated on his wife.

One of the women shown as a possible Cruz mistress in the National Enquirer is Amanda Carpenter.

Amanda Carpenter= A.C.

Ace is spelled A.C.E.

Is Ace actually Amanda Carpenter?

I'm just kidding. I know Ace is not Amanda Carpenter. I sent him an email once, and he (I presume accidentally) responded from an account that gave me his real name. I promptly forgot it, because I figured it was a mistake and he didn't actually want me knowing that information.

799 #798: In 2014, the GOP-controlled House passed a "continuing resolution" calling for something like $868 billion in spending. And the Democrat-controlled Senate passed a "continuing resolution" calling for $986 billion.

The two bills went to the resolution phase; the GOP-controlled House sent noted "budget hawk" Paul Ryan to represent them in the negotiations, while the Democrat-controlled Senate sent noted "drooling imbecile" Patty Murray to represent them.

Paul Ryan, leveraging all his skills as a negotiator, managed to compromise that spending bill all the way to $1.1 trillion, way more than even the Democrats wanted.

Yeah, that's the guy I want leading us and negotiating with foreign nations on our behalf.

800 "If Trump does not get that, he will not get the nomination and nor should he. The less than 40% do not get to dictate to the 60% who the nominee should be. "

So the alternative to the candidate who gets 35-40% is someone who got 0% because they never ran in the election in the first place and participated in exactly zero of the gazillion debates and hasn't had a year to make gaffes and be scrutinized? Yeah, that's much better than nominating the guy who busted his chops the past year to get the plurality.

803 We had one shot at saving America in my opinion, and we are in the process of blowing it -- in fact, we have probably done so.

I was willing to take Trump or Cruz. Either one would have been miles above Hillary Clinton, but both sides savaged the other, and now the GOPe stands on the brink of handing us another milquetoast candidate who might as well be a Democrat. Does anyone here actually think voters will flock to such a candidate? I didn't think so.

The GOPe doesn't care what happens to the country as long as they keep their power and position. The actual welfare of American citizens matters to them less than that forgotten banana peel lying in the gutter.

Hello President Clinton. Goodbye America.

Posted by: Nancy at April 01, 2016 12:22 PM (0J6YE)

804 It has to be someone with national name recognition now or someone with a story AND who is prepared who can capture that recognition quickly. A person without the name recognition has to sell themselves AND their positions and time will be at a premium.

Also remember parties exist to win elections. Nothing more. Nothing less. To win, our candidate needs to peel off enough of the middle and keep the right. The entire ticket needs to be evaluated for that.

If amnesty is the only issue, there are no candidates that will fit that bill. On any issue, any possible candidate will have a heresy. A fact of life.

In order: Ryan, Haley, Abbott, Martinez, Scott (of SC), perhaps Scott (of Fla). I doubt Daniels would run. Pence, perhaps? Willing to hear other names, but hearing a lot of silence.

805 Answer: NO.

No, because it's a dumb idea.
No, because parachuting a candidate in (think Alan Keyes 2004, Walter Mondale, etc.) almost never works.
No, because the Rules Dont Allow It. Rule 40 = 8 state majority delegations. They'd have to change that to "nominate whoever the hell you want" - to sneak Mitt in, so ... Ron Paul?!? Gary Johnson?!? Tom Tancredo?!? Sarah Palin!??
No, because a majority of delegates will be genuinely for Cruz and/or Trump and they don't want that.
