Greg Gutfeld: The Same Tension Pulling the GOP Apart Also Exists Among FoxNews Anchors and at The Five Itself

Well this isn't exactly news, but it is news someone said it.

"We as a show," he said, "are facing internal strife, from a micro level to a macro level… Look at The Five. On any given day, we have tension over this nomination, over this candidate. You can look at our network as a whole."

He said this is true of pretty much "every area where there is conservatism" these days, but pointed to specific "issues within a family of anchors” that has fractured the anti-Obama unity they once enjoyed."

Video at the link.

8 Yeah, with so many egos and presumptions of what our respective candidates and their challengers stand for and against, I just don't see a scenario outside a major national external threat that could possibly unite the party. Even the specter of an internal threat like Hillary or Bernie seems insufficient to the task.

18 On the positive side most people have finally caught on to the GOPe's game.

On the negative side we don't really have a certain answer as to how to deal with both the GOPe and the left, with some favoring a Trump response and some a Cruz response.

And to add to the pressure, the country has taken a hard, fascist tack under Obama - certainly no one would be surprised to see Christians imprisoned or the 2nd Amendment shredded under a Clinton or Sanders presidency.

23 I suspect that the tension on the 5 is due more to the management of Fox is drifting further to the left and some of the people on there do not like it. Fox has never been a really conservative news. At best some of the anchors were more of an RNCe leaning squad and on the Republican side they have always backed the most RINO of the candidates.

But even at that before I dropped my satellite I had noticed a more hard drift to the left. Now that good looking ginger who is married to the Navy seal may have some better conservative thoughts.

There were things I liked about Trump: he was the only one who was vocal and un-PC about illegal immigration and he infuriated people I've been hating for a decade now. That's it.

This is the GOP of Obamacare, illustrious judicial appointments like Merrick Garland, and "bipartisanship." I do not care that they're upset about Trump. I drink their tears with joy. Never going to happen, unfortunately. The federalist position (small fed and agnostic on states) can't even get 5% of the vote, and a libertarian position (small fed and small state) is even lower.

The "conservative" side of the population is filled with people who, like the left, want a tyrant. They just want OUR tyrant. A federal prohibition on gay marriage, for example, is popular on the right, but totally against the 10th Amendment.

One of our problems is, if none of them get 1237, the shit show begins.

Supposedly, the winner has to be someone still running? That would mean either giving it to trump, or ignoring trump (the leader) and giving it to Cruz or Kashit.

If that rule gets changed, then one of the drop outs gets to drop back in.

And if they go hog wild, then they foist off someone who didn't even run.

There's no reason to beat around the bush. If you think one election can fix the GOP, you should be voting for Cruz. And if you want to persuade others to do the same, explaining how he gets anything done with the Ryan-McConnell-Chamber of Commerce axis running congress.

89 Seriously, that Geraghty thing on the Corner yesterday really rubbed me the wrong way. The presumption that, when the smoke clears at the end of this debacle, the GOPe shills will be the ones deciding who to make nice with is really galling.

It ain't just guys like Hannity who deserve to have their credibility go up in flames. There's plenty of kindling available around NRO, only they don't seem to think so.

And, again, I know it's beating a dead horse, but you don't have to be a Trump supporter to feel that way, because I do, and I'm not.

90 Trump's comments about how Walker should've raised taxes rather than reform pensions were the final straw for me. I will never under any circumstances support this man and hope his delegates abandon him at the convention.

And any threat Trump about a 3rd party run is probably an empty one. He won't enter a race he is bound to lose and I doubt he has the cash to fund it anyway.

91 The problem is this election season has ripped the curtains away and revealed that the GOP is a fraudulent party.

It's neither Republican and neither Conservstive.

It's a farce, and appendage of the Democrat Party

And while Trump is no Conservstive he has revealed all of the CON-servatives.

I say this often but it bears repeating as many times as possible, the GOP will have controlled the house for 18 of the last 22 years, the house for 12 of the last 10 years and the presidency for 8 of the last 22 years and has produced nothing remotely Recognizable as Republican or Conservstive.

It's a sham party, it needs to die, it cannot be salvaged.

93 Follow-up on Monty Hall and the three doors.

Switching your choice doesn't increase your chances.

Think of it as two rounds. In the first round you pick one door of the three. But then Monty "cheats" in your favor. When he shows you one of the two doors that you didn't pick, he never shows you the winning door. If it was random and "honest," one-third of the time the winning door that you didn't pick would come up and you'd lose in the first round. So, because Monty cheats, you can never lose in the first round. The first round doesn't matter -- it's a setup.

In the second round, there are two doors left and you can pick either, by keeping your original pick or switching. Either way you've got a 50% chance. Because Monty cheats in the first round, you're odds of winning were always one in two, not one in three.

103 I'm with JackStraw and AtC on this - not sure that division and strife are novel, or all bad.

However, I would tentatively offer that the "heat of battle" over the unconventional candidacy of You Know Who has provided the opportunity for many hitherto respectable commentators (pros, possibly some "commenters" here too) to show their "limitations". That's it, "limitations".

An example, the current WSJ Heninger piece. WTF? His summary of the last six years is not recognizable to anyone actually alive and informed the last six years.

If nothing else, there is an inexplicable and fanatical attachment to the idea that the GOP's travails could not possibly be related to their actual action/inaction on actual policy matters, esp., since they were given both houses of Congress (and "given" is the precisely correct term - neither mid-term wave victory was achieved by adopting any concrete substantive program, in fact the leadership - comically so - openly resisted running on anything other than being "the other guys" right up to their huge victories).

Trump has become his own worst enemy. He's had a bad March and needs to find a way to get his mojo back. The abortion thing yesterday was an unforced error, as tried to play Chris Matthews but it got played back on Trump. I thought Trump didn't care about abortion. After you get through the Southern primaries by splitting the Evangelical vote with Cruz, why go there.

But Cruz has never been electable in the general. It's nearly impossible at the moment to elect a Constitutional Conservative who's also meaningfully pro-Life. Especially when you're a creepy tool. And a lawyer.

Either Trump gets past a probable loss in WI, and gets back to a 1,237 trajectory, or it'll be Romney on the 4th ballot.

167 Blindingly obvious is that the working and middle class working people in this country aren't tied to conservative ideals as much as they are in desperate financial straits. Trump, however imperfectly, is relentless in addressing personal economic issues.

Underemployment is a major problem in this country
The number of Americans enrolled in food stamps programs is near a record high.

A "less government more private sector" solution is the best way to go for the future, but right now after 10 years of recession and record numbers of Americans and non-Americans depending on federal assistance, it's not a good "election" message. Trump is searching for the golden mean in attracting working Americans in the center-left to center-right range, that's where the votes are.

Posted by: Ignoramus at March 31, 2016 12:55 PM (r1fLd)

Incorrect.

There is a one out of three chance you picked the correct door on your guess, and a two out of three chance you picked the wrong door.

If you switch, the door you get has a 2/3 chance of having the prize, because you had a 2/3 chance of getting it wrong on the first guess.

Think of it this way - you can stick with the first door you picked, or you can open the two other doors instead.

Isn't it obvious that two doors is two chances and better than one?

Posted by: JackStraw at March 31, 2016 12:46 PM (/tuJf)

It's a combination of things. You've got the GOPe types that spent a lot of time shitting on Trump and his supporters for the more reasonable of his proposals (general anti-illegal immigration sentiments) and that legitimately hit a nerve. All their scheming doesn't help. On the flip side there is a whole shitstorm of gas lighting going on in the Trump camp (ht to Patterico and the polyamory apologist blog The Federalist for putting their fingers on what it is exactly that's going on with the gas lighting), and his supporters that just go right along with it and insist 2+2 has always equaled 5 because Trump and I'm angry!

I have very, very dear family members that are so far into the Trump thing that I genuinely think they would believe anything he said simply because he says it. They've changed their views on issues they've had long-standing and consistent opinions on, multiple times throughout the current campaign because his pronouncements have changed and they have to match and defend what he says. And when you point it out it quickly turns into shouting and screeching and personal insults.

This crap is flat out insane and I don't want any part of it. And the thing that makes me fume at the moment is that I want to be able to express my sheer anger and frustration at the abortion flailing from him yesterday because he WILL be hung around the neck of pro-lifers and he has now set us way the hell back when we've spent decades making very hard won gains. And yet if I mention it in the vicinity of the Trump supporters I know personally I'm going to get shouted down with more gas lighting and screeching about this or that conspiracy to take Trump down, etc and so on.

So, so very frustrating. And the longer I'm expected to just hold my tongue so as not to besmirch Trump's sacred honor in the presence of his people (the ones I know) the more and more I steam and it's likely to boil over and go thermo-nuclear. I'm guessing there's a lot of that going around and it's contributing greatly to the butt hurt.

It takes the entire election off track, regardless of right or wrong.

Trump is a centrist leading a political revolt founded in the American working and middle classes. This revolt is upsetting to the political donor class, who like their current rice bowls just fine, because they've got friends in high places. And if they need weapons of mass Trump destruction, they'll finance the mouthpieces who will get things done.

Plenty of precedent for all of that in American history.

I've decided that the best word to describe this primary season is creepy.

It's creepy that so many people have chosen to identify personally with a candidate.

It's creepy that so many people have chosen to attack personally the people who oppose their candidate.

It's creepy that so many of those whom I had heretofore believed to be actual professionals have dropped the mask and revealed themselves to be exactly the condescending, sneering snobs the Left always stated they were.

It's creepy that disagreements as to positions or policies are now called lies.

This entire thing has been complicated by contracts involving surrogate mothering and adoption of child not yet born.

SOMETHING is the subject of these contracts. Property? Life? Kinda sorta life?

However, we've already devolved to the stage where any attempt to stem the carnage results in adversely affecting a constituency; which was intended all along.

Witness the Dance of Bullshit when Saint Kermit was busted; by a DEA task force investigating him for running a pill mill. Not a filthy butcher shop where women died.

How horrific.

And this is one of many examples as to why the pro-life overestimated has never pushed for women to be legally punished for having abortions. Women have long been considered victims of it, as well. Lots of women are pressured into it, culturally, by a boyfriend or relative, some are actually forced into it. In all honesty, I doubt that the majority of women who have had them have done so in what most of us would consider their right mind or because of some cold-blooded calculation.

My personal belief is that there is moral culpability for having an abortion, but that can be mitigated by other factors. And it's not the same mentality as the "doctor" who performs them. On the one hand you have someone who is very likely emotionally distraught, confused, possibly very young and impressionable, and potentially not really acting under her own power. On the other you have an adult who is systematically killing, dismembering, and removing children from the wombs of multiple women, day after day. It's a different level of culpability and, frankly, evil.

As the descendant of Oakies, I find the idea that so many find what he wrote abhorrent to be a fatal indicator of what lies ahead for the country.

Where does the Constitution state that citizens are guaranteed the right to live where they wish working the jobs they wish for the pay they wish? I must have missed that clause. Instead we have a bunch of should-be ghost towns kept on life support by federal safety hammocks (looking at you, Flint). Don't get me wrong, I am all for a drastic reduction and merit-based overhaul of our immigration system and am a full-throated opponent of TPP. But when did being an American come to mean that one should sit on one's ass, collect disability, and bitch about the gubmint as if owed by dint of residence the lifestyle to which one has become accustomed?

278 Reconsider what?
That Trump is a bad candidate?
That he will continue letting all the awful public policies continue just like W did?
That they should vote for someone who would be no better than W, McCain and Romney?
Lets hear Cruz say he would do all the things W promised but didn't come close to delivering on.
Cruz is a lawyer. That means he can lie in an artful way. Tell the truth, but not the whole truth, and not nothing but the truth. Trump is telling lies but they are as believable as everything we have heard from R's since Reagan.

280 The shame of all of this is that we actually had some really good candidates running this time and an actual Debate about the future of the Party could have taken place. Instead, Trump sucked up all the Oxygen because of all the Networks being ratings hungry, and all the good candidates dropped out, one by one. I would have loved to see an actual Debate between Cruz, Rubio, Paul, and Jindal over the future of the Party. Instead we got this Billionaire Buffoon getting all the media attention and showing no knowledge of the issues, but instead, calling people names the whole time. Pathetic. He'll never get my vote.

285 258 You are flatly wrong. Deserve to die is a word for word quote from an article that Williamson wrote.

by: alexthechick - Destroyer of Gaia and Seductress of Savagery at March 31, 2016 01:38 PM (mf5HN)

Williamson has a special hate for conservatives who live off government handouts. Are you sure he wasn't in part focusing on those people?

Dougherty invites us to think about Mike, an imaginary member of the white working class who is getting by on Social Security disability fraud in unfashionable Garbutt, N.Y.

He also talks endlessly about the unstoppable economic force of innovation: making more but employing fewer people. The marginal workers who lose their jobs in every economic change always only have two ugly choices: learn something new or rely on charity (of the government sort in our world). These are unstoppable forces, and a bad byproduct of a good thing (innovation). He says these communities "deserve to die" because they will die if good things are happening in the economy as a whole. This is only a rhetorical restatement of a principle of classical economics.

Trump "loves low education people", those self-dame marginal workers who are always getting squeezed out of jobs, and are perhaps mistaking Williamsons criticism as a class criticism, when it's really just economic fact?

Williamson hates Trump, and he's pointing out in this article that some Trump supporters are being totally taken advantage of, in that nothing anyone can do will save their livelihoods because the brutal march of economics dictates the uneducated marginal workers take it in the butt. Williamson doesn't hate small town America, he's trying to be honest-- a quality of talk he thinks his readership can handle and of which he believes America needs to hear more.

286 What's this Monty Hall thing ? The question is the
odds of winning, right ? Tell me EXACTLY how Monty shows this "other"
door, please.
Posted by: ScoggDog at March 31, 2016 01:20 PM (W+w2W)
On the actual show, there wasn't any consistency in whether Monty Hall opened another door and allowed the contestant to switch, or even whether there was a prize behind any door.

In the Monty Hall problem, a contestant chooses from three identical doors, behind one of which is a prize and behind two of which are nothing (or goats). After the contestant chooses a door (but before opening it), Monty Hall opens one of the other two doors, revealing that nothing is behind that door, and then offers to allow the contestant to switch to the other closed door. The question is whether the contestant should switch.

The answer is that switching to the other closed door gives the contestant a two-thirds chance of winning the prize, whereas if they stick with their original choice they have only a one-third chance of winning the prize. Regardless of which door the contestant chooses, there is always another door for Monty to open with nothing behind it. Two-thirds of the time, the contestant has chosen a door with nothing behind it, Monty opens the only other door with nothing behind it, and if the contestant chooses to switch doors then the contestant will win the prize. One-third of the time, the contestant has chosen the correct door with the prize, Monty opens one of the other two doors (doesn't matter which), and if the contestant chooses to switch then the contestant does not win the prize.

Effectively, being offered the opportunity to switch doors is the same as being offered the opportunity to select both of the doors not initially chosen. Monty will always open a door with nothing behind it, meaning that if one of those two doors not initially selected has the prize behind it, it is now the one being offered to the contestant in a switch. The contestant has a one-third chance of having randomly selected the correct door, and this probability is unaffected by Monty opening another door with nothing behind it, meaning there is a two-thirds chance of the prize being behind the remaining closed door.

287 100 Boy, Rush is really hip deep in excuse making for Trump today. Anybody else make those idiotic comments on abortion and Rush would have led the charge to excoriate them.

Rush was actually insulting Trump, albeit with substantial subtlety, saying that Trump doesn't know anything about conservative viewpoints or values so he had to parrot what liberals believe conservatives think. Thus saying that Trump has no positions or values of his own, he's just saying whatever he thinks people want to hear.

I mean no disrespect, but this is a response, not a reply. It does not address the reality that the American Dream is one which states that we are free to determine our own destiny, with all the hopes, disappointments, and risks that proposition entails.

You serve and don't like it (I gather). I too am from a military family and understand the hardships of deployment and appreciate your service, but our military is non-conscription, so I don't get what this has to do with the point about no one being owed a living.

As for fighting the EPA regulations, I think it's disingenuous to say republicans haven't pushed back on the latest power-grabs but are limited by presidential veto power. In fact, it's Cruz, not Trump who favors getting the government out of the ethanol mandate scheme, but he's not your guy, right? I'm trying to find any evidence in Trump's record that would show a strong willingness to show restraint in the presence of power, and keep coming up empty. I'm not being sarcastic when I ask you to show me where I'm wrong because I'm genuinely looking for evidence to assuage my deepest concerns about him.

As for Williamson, he is a proponent of legal immigration, but while I am by no means a fan or follower of his, a two-second search brought up the below linked article he wrote about the need to apply the rule of law on immigration.

Finally, you mention communism and post-constitutional scenarios, but what is being debated is whether Williamson is correct and people should be responsible for their own circumstances, choices, or whatever, or the converse, which to me sounds a lot like government handouts and interventions to provide for individuals in failing markets/towns. If the former of those two is the one that sounds most like communism to you....well, I'm not sure how productive anyone will be in dissuading you.

Posted by: KillianThyme at March 31, 2016 02:45 PM (n2r4H)

289 Further to my @285, it has to be admitted Williamson grew up in one of those towns he hates so much, having a low education population and a federal benefits based economy. He might get a little carried away telling you how terrible his childhood was in West Texas poverty. Can't blame him for advocating "getting away" from it if you can.

1) I am a spouse, not on active duty(I am a proud veteran who loved the Army)

That I miss home after being far from it for 22 of the last 25 years is hardly shocking.

2)I am Trump agnostic and of the remaining have been a vociferous Cruz man.

3) What we have extant is not legal immigration, and when the U6 UE% is as high the goddamned bar for even credentialed migrants should be high.

4) the unregulated wave migration that K D Williamson has no issue with is not going to be voting for a Lockeian based Hayek economy.

They are not here to get away from home they are wanting to get paychecks for bringing home here.

Realities

1) You have a party unwilling to give a unified "fuck you" to the Democrat Partisan Non-Partisan Civil Service's NGO Operative with GS rating antics.

2) Jimbo G and the Kemp Jock Sniffing NRO SonderKommando sucks as badly at retail politics as I would.

K D Williamson lives in a fantasy world where his silver tongue will convince a weaponized migrant wave from voting for people promising free shit.

He castigates his political allies who simply want the federal government to take its dick out of their ass.

"Good luck Big Kev" I can't sell my family that lost their GM jobs to the Mequilas on the notion they need to move to LA and become baristas....

Scattershot anger. You're mad about about immigration. So am I, as I've said, and trust me, I've been scrapped harder against its raw edge in California than the what? Few hundred thousand? in Ohio. Preaching to the choir and ignoring the point.

Losing a job to cheaper labor over the border sucks but is no where near the level of federal fuck ups that caused the dust bowl (per my Oakies comment earlier). I have had to move towns and switch careers in my life enough times to have less than a thimble full of tears for the whimpering "they took our jarbs" crowd. Get lean. Move. Find other work. Don't just sit on your ass and bitch about how good you had it because that only pays the rent in a communist wet dream. I would happily work as a barista if that's what it took to be my own person. 308 I didn't vote Trump in the primary, but I wasn't slitting my wrist over the idea of him being the nominee.

I now think he needs to be removed, in my mind this election is already lost, but it's one thing to have a 48-52 election, another to have a 61-39 election and watch every office get wiped out.

I'm fine with the Trumpkins sitting out the election and writing his name in, it would actually help the GOP to take their lumps and not have these people.

What's funny is I actually support Trump on most of his policy, but I really do think he has gone crazy.
