Marquette University Demands Professor Apologize to Colleague, For the Sin of Criticizing Her Anti-Free-Speech Classroom Policy

She said that certain opinions (guess which ones) were inappropriate for her class and would not be countenanced; he wrote a blog-post criticizing her.

The university is now demanding he publicly apologize and sign on to a "guidance" reaffirming the university's core (leftist) values.

He's telling them to go hang -- but he knows they're doing this to gin up a pretext to fire him. But he's telling them to go hang anyway.

Meanwhile, linked at Instapundit, Virginia Postrel talks about conservative professors in the closet, and the jellyfish jackass dean of Emory is now pretending to be pro-free-speech, after having already promised the SJWs he'd prosecute the "Trump 2016" chalker.

Apparently Emory's alumna are circulating a petition demanding Emory re-commit itself to free speech.

No longer does Emory University serve as a beacon of intellectual diversity attracting some of the best and brightest young adults from across the world, much as it attracted us. Instead, Emory has become just another school in the well-documented pattern of universities that have surrendered to the demands of a vocal few that emotional comfort, ideological conformity and yes, "safe environments" trump fundamental notions of free speech. Critical thinking and exposure to other opinions are unwanted. But this does not have to be how the story ends. It is vitally important that we respond to this trend by reaffirming our foundational notions of freedom. Unfortunately, President Wagner and Emory University have thus far failed to rise to the challenge.

And that's a big deal, because the only pushback against the Adult Babies running the campuses (as AllahPundit called them) is for the trustees and alumna/donors to treat the Adult Babies the only way you can treat Adult Babies: by threatening to cut off the Adult Babies' allowance unless they get a haircut and fly right.

Universities price themselves higher and higher because the amount of student loans made available (even on a per-student basis) keeps increasing. The result isn't colleges pricing themselves out of the market, but students being forced to take on ever more debt. Rather than recognize government as the source of the problem, students tend to look to government for debt relief.

Since there isn't any real competition between universities, in the sense that private-sector competition exists, the universities simply vacuum up the additional funds available from ever-increasing student loans, and student have the choice of either accepting it or not going to college (they tend to do the latter, and then vote Bernie for debt relief). The solution is to greatly curtail federal student loans, and to eliminate the bankruptcy protection for private student loans (not for existing loans but for future loans) without which banks would make only a small fraction of the student loans they make now.

I overheard 3 physicians who graduated from Marquette say this morning that MU will never again get a dime from them. One is going to write them (and I know the guy pretty well and I think he will).

So this one appears to be making people pretty angry. Maybe what happened at Mizzou has shown people that you can fight this crap and win because when push comes to shove, they're gutless cowards and will fold. Nobody has pushed against them that much.

I went to MU. I can assure you it's been CINO for a very long time. In fact, if you wanted to make an agnostic or a non-practicing Catholic out of a Catholic, sending him or her to MU would be a start.

I got a call from Berkeley soliciting funds, and spent an hour (!) on the phone with some sweet young thing (nicely) educating her via the Socratic method. (Rather like Neil Cavuto schooling that witless girl student - http://tinyurl.com/oj8e8tj).

One highlight: I offered to fix Berkeley's budgetary problems by use of a clipboard, a sheaf of pink slips, and directions to the Grievance Studies and sociology departments. She agreed, but said some of those departments were really popular. I replied, "C'mon, sweetheart; a Department of Beer-Drinking would be popular too, wouldn't it? Popularity is no measure of academic merit."

I know that. To some extent I use football to fill in for all sports, but that is because it is the biggest and most popular. Also, I think it is the one that draws in the most casual non-college people as well. I.e., a lot of Texas residents who never went to college root for Texas football (you may substitue Mich or OSU, etc.).

Employers are now restricted in the testing of applicants (disparate impact, doncha know?), and so use university degrees to screen out ghetto denizens. I'm thinking of selling certificates for, say, $500, that assure prospective employers that the owner is not a ghetto thug. A lot cheaper than college!

That said, I am going to brag on my baby girl, who just won a grant to research the mycology of the Deep Water Horizon oil spill-apparently in some of her current research, she has noted that the areas of the spill with a certain fungus are actually thriving, and she gets to do more investigation as to why, and what other benefits may be drawn from this. And she's a sophomore, and is working to pay for at least half of her tuition.

So when these special snowflakes get whiny because someone wrote in chalk, I wonder how many of them have scholarships or grants, and what exactly they are contributing to society other than bad breath?

At the time it happened I did a rough calculation that the oil spilled would fill Yankee Stadium to the brim were the Stadium turned into an enclosed pool. That's a lot of spillage, but not so much in the huge Gulf of Mexico that has an average depth of 5,000 feet. The damage would have been worse had the drilling not been so far offshore. At the time, I had a vision of Rachel Maddow and other reporters frantically running around the Gulf Coast trying to find where a plume of spillage had landed so they could find a dead bird or two. Given that oil is organic, I expected the Gulf would self-clean in a couple of years.

Just an aside, but my uncle, a WW2 UDT, and 8th grade drop out, received a better education than most college grads today. Between low standards (to get more bodies in the schools with their federally backed tuition loans) and grade inflation (to make graduates more attractive to employers) colleges and universities have devalued their product, and are robbing their customers. Today, employers shouldn't trust a bachelors level diploma. Industrial certifications and graduate degrees (to some extent) are better indicators of success. Higher ed needs serious reform.
Do you think the ChiComs have courses in Transgendered Underwater basket weaving? Do you think they're wasting credit hours on "Black studies""Queer studies" or any other "Insert X studies"? No and neither should we.

Exactly. But the oil spill was evil and wrong. Probably because BP did it, and not the EPA.

We lived in the Panhandle of Florida when the spill took place. There were problems the first few months or so, with the beaches being tarry, which reduced tourism, but I remember tarry beaches growing up, because tar happens. There was an impact on some of the shrimping areas, but the fish was fine, and people were eating gulf seafood right away.
