Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Marquette University Demands Professor Apologize to Colleague, For the Sin of Criticizing Her Anti-Free-Speech Classroom PolicyShe said that certain opinions (guess which ones) were inappropriate for her class and would not be countenanced; he wrote a blog-post criticizing her. The university is now demanding he publicly apologize and sign on to a "guidance" reaffirming the university's core (leftist) values. He's telling them to go hang -- but he knows they're doing this to gin up a pretext to fire him. But he's telling them to go hang anyway. Meanwhile, linked at Instapundit, Virginia Postrel talks about conservative professors in the closet, and the jellyfish jackass dean of Emory is now pretending to be pro-free-speech, after having already promised the SJWs he'd prosecute the "Trump 2016" chalker. Apparently Emory's alumna are circulating a petition demanding Emory re-commit itself to free speech. No longer does Emory University serve as a beacon of intellectual diversity attracting some of the best and brightest young adults from across the world, much as it attracted us. Instead, Emory has become just another school in the well-documented pattern of universities that have surrendered to the demands of a vocal few that emotional comfort, ideological conformity and yes, "safe environments" trump fundamental notions of free speech. Critical thinking and exposure to other opinions are unwanted. But this does not have to be how the story ends. It is vitally important that we respond to this trend by reaffirming our foundational notions of freedom. Unfortunately, President Wagner and Emory University have thus far failed to rise to the challenge. And that's a big deal, because the only pushback against the Adult Babies running the campuses (as AllahPundit called them) is for the trustees and alumna/donors to treat the Adult Babies the only way you can treat Adult Babies: by threatening to cut off the Adult Babies' allowance unless they get a haircut and fly right. The solution is to greatly curtail federal student loans, and to eliminate the bankruptcy protection for private student loans (not for existing loans but for future loans) without which banks would make only a small fraction of the student loans they make now. Posted by: Wyatt Earp at March 30, 2016 01:39 PM (gA69l) I overheard 3 physicians who graduated from Marquette say this morning that MU will never again get a dime from them. One is going to write them (and I know the guy pretty well and I think he will). So this one appears to be making people pretty angry. Maybe what happened at Mizzou has shown people that you can fight this crap and win because when push comes to shove, they're gutless cowards and will fold. Nobody has pushed against them that much. I went to MU. I can assure you it's been CINO for a very long time. Although this story concerns a private university, public universities aren't much different. One might think that out of the 20-something state governments controlled by Republicans, at least one would have moved to assert control over its public university system against the Progressives. But then Republicans would be an actual opposition rather than a show opposition.

46 Being the only conservative I know who attended UC Berkeley (1975 - 1979), I'm probably in no position to point the finger at anyone else's alma mater. Every time Berkeley is in the news, it's for something that would make me ashamed, if I felt I had any part in whatever shameful act they're guilty of this time.
But since I, as an alum of Berkeley, also tell the moneygrubbers to go hang every time they call with they're hand out, allow me to join the critics of Marquette that they can also go hang. Posted by: Qoheleth at March 30, 2016 01:54 PM (iIzG7) Me too. And for what it's worth, apparently there were two of us at Berkeley. (Rather like Neil Cavuto schooling that witless girl student - http://tinyurl.com/oj8e8tj). One highlight: I offered to fix Berkeley's budgetary problems by use of a clipboard, a sheaf of pink slips, and directions to the Grievance Studies and sociology departments. She agreed, but said some of those departments were really popular. I replied, "C'mon, sweetheart; a Department of Beer-Drinking would be popular too, wouldn't it? Presented without comment.
We stress critical thinking to encourage students to examine the foundations of a belief - the facts, the science, the history. We must present a balance of ideas, then let students employ critical thinking to form their own opinions. Yet recent examples from across the country challenge that notion. Speakers have been shouted down by groups angry about their ideas. Faculty and administrators have been criticized for advocating for the historic protection of free expression on university campuses. Commencement speakers are rejected because of their politics or their worldview. We must renounce such tactics. It is only through open discussion that ideas get a proper airing. Free speech and freedom of inquiry are central to our university, a primary reason we exist. For more than 50 years, the United States Supreme Court has upheld this principle: "The nation's future depends upon leaders trained through wide exposure to that robust exchange, which discovers truth" from many voices, rather than only a few. /University of Colorado President Bruce Benson communication to the faculty on March 3, 2016 Posted by: Seamus Muldoon at March 30, 2016 02:17 PM (NeFrd) 130

The Jesuits are a quite interesting organization. During the Age of Discovery they were often among the very first Europeans to enter the New World and the Far East. They've founded far more colleges and universities than any other organization in history, and as a group within the Church, are the most well-educated and the most political. While most lean left, sometimes hard left, a lot of Jesuits are conservatives.

One of the regulars at the dog park, big guy, retiree, about 70, who I've met just about every morning for the last 3 months while walking our dogs, showed me his concealed carry pistol today, it was kinda funny. I asked him where he got the bag he uses to carry dog treats, his phone, wallet, etc. every day, and he said "Well, I hope you don't freak out, but this is why I really carry it", and showed me a compact something or other tucked in next to the "Maro-Bone Treats". I think he was afraid I might be an anti-gunner, there are a bunch of retiree/pensioner Liberals among the dog park regulars, but recently we've talked about my Army days, probably assuaged his worries. Tomorrow I'll ask him what the make/model is. Small, matte black, looked newish.

169 The Jesuits are a quite interesting organization.

Most BA graduates now can't hold an intelligent conversation, unless they can use emoticons. "Deep Water Horizon oil spill"
The recent EPA spill on the Colorado river may be a far worse ecological disaster, no? At the time it happened I did a rough calculation that the oil spilled would fill Yankee Stadium to the brim were the Stadium turned into an enclosed pool. That's a lot of spillage, but not so much in the huge Gulf of Mexico that has an average depth of 5,000 feet. The damage would have been worse had the drilling not been so far offshore. At the time, I had a vision of Rachel Maddow and other reporters frantically running around the Gulf Coast trying to find where a plume of spillage had landed so they could find a dead bird or two. Given that oil is organic, I expected the Gulf would self-clean in a couple of years. Compare the Colorado spill where three million gallons of "The Worst Stuff on Earth"(TM) sluiced down the river. Hard to figure out the extent of the damage because there's been a virtual news embargo. Posted by: Ignoramus at March 30, 2016 03:00 PM (r1fLd) 244

Posted by: DocJ at March 30, 2016 02:39 PM (zrsn3) Just an aside, but my uncle, a WW2 UDT, and 8th grade drop out, received a better education than most college grads today. Between low standards (to get more bodies in the schools with their federally backed tuition loans) and grade inflation (to make graduates more attractive to employers) colleges and universities have devalued their product, and are robbing their customers. Today, employers shouldn't trust a bachelors level diploma. Industrial certifications and graduate degrees (to some extent) are better indicators of success. Higher ed needs serious reform. Do you think the ChiComs have courses in Transgendered Underwater basket weaving? Do you think they're wasting credit hours on "Black studies""Queer studies" or any other "Insert X studies"? Probably because BP did it, and not the EPA. We lived in the Panhandle of Florida when the spill took place. There were problems the first few months or so, with the beaches being tarry, which reduced tourism, but I remember tarry beaches growing up, because tar happens. There was an impact on some of the shrimping areas, but the fish was fine, and people were eating gulf seafood right away. Posted by: Moki at March 30, 2016 03:06 PM (7q2ch) 249
