15 So on the gun shop opening.

I was there. I went not so much to want to spend money (as if I could anyway, the place was PACKED), but to show support for the shop owners and push back a little against the Dems who were trying to bully the landlords and environs into opposing this business. I saw the open letter the Dems had sent, and I tell you...it's really chilling what they think they can do.

And yep, one single protestor. I was highly amused at her sign, thinking that more people homeschooling isn't at all a bad thing, so I didn't think she really thought her position through.

Hats off to the owner. I hope he does well.

    Kidnapped Priest crucified by ISIS

I know the TDS is strong here, but I'd like to think that Teh Donald could get a lot of mileage and a bump in the polls if he slammed this atrocity and the dog-eating crackhead who enabled it.

"But why not Cruz?" you might ask. Because, IMO, this sort of thing is in his wheelhouse and would thus be ignored by the irreligious left and MFM as just more of Lyin' Ted's god-bothering. It takes a religiously-indifferent schmuck like Trump to force this abomination into the national conversation.

Which means it will never happen.

God bless that priest. He died for his faith.

129 Most of the time I think, when we look back on the way things were, we look back at a very specific timeframe, or event, or series of events.

I would like to ask you to do an experiment and try to look back eight, maybe nine, years ago and try to consider being in that time frame in a broad sense - taking everything of that period into consideration and into context.

Now - try to imagine even beginning to imagining some ot the things that are taken for granted today even being a possibility of your imagination eight or nine years ago.

Try to imagine whether or not you think it would have been possible to contemplate a person having their livelihood stripped from them for not baking a cake for an event that put into question their deeply held convictions.

Try to imagine someone's ability to express themselves in a political, or social setting, stripped from them because their written or spoken words were judged to cause harm to those who held, not just different, but radically opposing views that only a few short years earlier would have been judged so far outside of the mainstream to be laughable.

Eight - nine - years ago, what is happening in this country would have only been imaginable in a country widely viewed as oppressive. It would have been judged so far away from any concept of a free society that you would have been laughed out of a room for even suggesting that things like this were even possible.

We talked about how fast thing were moving away from liberty eight years ago on this blog. We look at things now, from this perspective of this point in time and we can't see the magnitude of the rending that has taken place of our society.

Now try to imagine - eight years into the future - of that society that existed eight years ago - existing again today.

    It's impossible.

We are fighting for a society that is dust and haze.

What a joke. It would be funny if he weren't also transforming America into joke status.

    Thanks.

So it is based on "they know each other" which really doesn't do anything other than throw another smokescreen up.

Here's my speculation: Trump has always wanted to run, but every time he has checked he couldn't see a way in to get him to be seriously considered. This time around when he checked he saw the great division between the voters concerns and what issues the others were holding positions on and pandered to the concerns of the voters, giving him his opening.

No one needed to persuade him, he persuaded himself. No mere acquaintance to do a favor for was necessary, he did it solely for his best friend - Donald Trump. Like he always does, he saw an opportunity and took it.

The ones who hijacked a Lufthansa jet and murdered the captain, got her hand slapped. She was released from prison after a few years due to poor health. 20 years later, she is alive and kicking and living in Oslo. So, unless terrorists are killed, weenies will release them, usually early, too, and they will go back to murdering innocent people.

besides a possible offshore oil find that is pretty darned impressive?

You could also ask what use Guam has to the US, since the Chinese really would like it better.

The Falklands have UK citizens and have plebiscites regularly. They vote UK overwhelmingly. Including many Argentina-origin residents.

312 I see a former PR flack for Trump has issued an open letter on the Trump candidacy. In it she says he wanted to run as a protest candidate to publicize his core issues (of immigration, trade imbalances and the PC bullshit presumably), but never expected to get higher than 10-15% or so.

He wanted to influence the political debate, and (I hope!) get the Bushes out of the party!

But these ideas are lots more powerful and popular than he ever thought and his simple "protest candidacy" has turned into a movement. Trump didn't expect this, which explains his very thin campaign staff and his evident unpreparedness for being the frontrunner.

I just don't believe that the magnitude of the near complete subversion of the values we called 'traditional' a few years ago, could have been imagined.

Waco, always had that 'crazy' element to it that the government could point to as a defense of their actions. Just like the Oregon rancher standoff. But this makes what was widely held to be normal only a few years ago and turns it on its head. Traditional values are anathema to at the very least, a plurality in this country.

Nah. It wasn't conceivable nine years ago. Nobody would have thought this would have happened in this country. Not to this extent and not this fast.

350 A small skewed history on the Falkands:

Argentina has a problem. It is a Peronist-socialist government. That is to say it is fascist, but unlike Brazil they aren't as proud of it.
The economy does not work and is pulled back and forth by special interests looking for advantage, and the victim of the resulting market distortion is the consumer and voter
When things go bad the government tends to rely a lot on the police and the military to back them up, but after a while they have to find a reason the police and military have such influence other than "to protect the government from the people"

Argentina is in the end of continent. Its neighbors are Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil, with whom they are in the MercoSur trading alliance and are dependent on for markets and materials. (and some of them are either powerful or historically a real bastard to fight)
There is also Chile which may well overmatch them militarily and is behind the Andes.
and then there is Antarctica, which has penguins, and the Falklands which doesn't have much but sheep and fishing rights.

In the past Argentina has tried to defuse domestic tension by showing military might to unite their people in wartime by invading the Falklands.
Argentina doesn't need the Falklands, and the Falklands have regular plebiscites at the insistence of the Argentinian government and regularly vote UK.
They also remember the Malvinas war and not fondly.

Further, the Falklands are outside of even the 200 mile limit if you draw a line between the mouth of the Rio de Plata estuary and Estandos Island off Tierra del Fuego

I don't think the UK will surrender here anytime soon, it is too much like Hong Kong with less reason. And now there is oil.
