Good Things on Good Friday Thread

Good things only here.

custmah watah only for custmahs pointed out that the word "throes" in fact has a singular form -- throe, which means, apparently, a violent and painful struggle. (Which makes "throes of passion" more of an interesting expression than you might have thought.)

Anyway, talk about nice things, including religious things. Whatever. Just no bad things.

Peace be with you.

4 Venture Brothers Season 6 was a VERY good thing. Just too short and sadly cut off before the storylines got resolved. But the Monarch's story was amazing and the last new character introduced, Red Death, instantly became one of their best characters ever.

16 Saw the most moving and sad and funny Irish film called Calvary. It's about a priest struggling to help a cynical and bitter Irish town in the wake of the priest sex abuse scandal. The POV is of that of the priest as he struggles to meet the spiritual needs of his frequently resentful parishioners. Great film but sad ending. Not necessarily religious but spiritual

17 Ace, if you like the Monarch you will most likely enjoy this past season -- it focuses on him in a way it really hasn't before.

And strangely enough, Dr. Dugong plays into this season as well, in an odd way.

Of course, I enjoyed Season 5 tremendously, so grain of salt and all that.

51 For my Walking Dead homies...if you haven't seen it, or saw the first few episodes and gave up, check out 'Z Nation' on Netflix. It's not perfect, and it takes about 4 episodes to find its stride, but once it decides it's a show with lots of dark humor elements, it displays moments of pure genius, combined with some 'so-stupid-it's awesome' jokes and go-for-broke concepts that it really does set itself apart from other shows and movies that have tried to copy Walking Dead's formula, or just ride its coattails.

Z Nation often experiments with concepts within concepts, and rather than just focusing on that concept, it tosses in unseen twists and jokes that just seem to come out of left field.

The Premise: Two years after the initial outbreak (the show hints at mutated Ebola), one man - a belligerent ex-con named Murphy - is immune to the virus, partly because he's a carrier. He is the last hope of mankind. Unfortunately, he's in Boston, and the only functioning lab left is in California. An unlikely group of survivors sets out to get him there.

Where most shows would hang their hats on that premise and go with a 'look what happened on the way to California" formula, Z Nation gets wildly inventive with each episode; there's a Road Warrior episode that grinds to a halt in order to reenact the opening scene from Super Troopers. There's a Groundhog Day episode that takes a few unexpected turns. There's an episode where the group comes across a compound run entirely by women, and the matriarch is played by Kelly McGillis, and it's in Utah...

About midway through season 1, the virus begins to mutate, and different kinds of zombies start showing up to harass the group. Glowing blue irradiated zombies that explode if you kill them, plant zombies that can't be killed with bullets, zombies that got into a batch of Ritilin at a pharmaceutical company in Colorado (That particular episode begins in South Park...justy to remind you where this show's head is at), and a priceless scene involving the world's largest wheel of cheese in Wisconsin.

Z Nation: no other zombie show - and no other show at all for that matter - will have a scene in which an aging hippie is trapped in an air vent with a zombie that's tangled up in chords, decides his death is imminent, and chooses to spend his last living moments toking up. Yes, the zombie gets stoned too.

Z Nation. First two seasons are on Netflix.

Season 1 was pretty good, although I did get mighty tired of Fisk's repetitive crap about "this city." We are about halfway through season 2 and the stuff with The Punisher is awesome. i don't like endorsing marvel but since you have netflix anyway -- i found season 2 better than season 1, though I hated season 1, so the fact that it had a pulse makes it better.

aslo, the fact that it has characters other than boring-ass Matt Murdoch and his boring ass Friend and boring ass secretary. (The latter more interesting this season, as she has actual shit to do for once -- she's basically the detective, so you learn plot stuff through her. Daredevil just waits for fights to happen.)

Elektra and especially The Punisher are good characters especially because they're Not Daredevil.

so yeah, whatever, it's better.

It's a mess...and I am a die hard DC fan. Warner Brothers wanted their "Avengers" event movie without having to work for it like Marvel/Disney did. 'Dawn of Justice' is essentially a bunch of different movies tossed into a blender...the trailers are actually more coherent.

I'd say I was disappointed, but I kinda expected the outcome. I recommend saving your money and checking out the new season of Daredevil, in which Marvel's greatest hero - The Punisher - is born...and they were pretty faithful to his origin story at that.

So here's a happy thing. I've been doing a lot of pre-season stream scouting. I saw some waterfowl I didn't recognize and they turned out to be Mergansers. I was surprised because I thought they were sea ducks and I'm looking at an inland river.

Today while I was scouting the river and trying to get a good picture of the Mergansers a genuine American no shit Bald Eagle flew low over the river. Huge bird, white head, white splotch on the tail.

101 Ok, here's a Good Thing for Tolkien fans. Back in the 1980s til 1997 or so, a small publisher called Iron Crown Enterprises had the license to Middle-earth for gaming purposes. They put out a decent RPG, Middle-Earth Roleplaying (or MERP) that was compatible with the fiendishly complex Rolemaster system.

Whether you liked the game or not was a matter of taste, but it had utterly gorgeous maps by a fellow named Pete Fenlon. These books are long out of print, but someone took the maps from the old supplements and stitched them together into an enormous .gif. Enjoy!

104 okay, let me point something out:

This is the first time, ever, I've liked The Punisher. Previous incarnations, making him the sole hero, have missed any interest in the character, because they have to make him 1, a bit of an everyman good guy like all heroes should be, which is definitely not The Punisher, and 2, this totally professional military guy so military wannabes can get off on the fantasy.

BUT HE IS ***NOT*** A PROFESSIONAL, COOL MILITARY MAN! IF HE WERE HE'D BE IN THE ARMY, IN THE CHAIN OF COMMAND!

In fact he's a violent, emotional, borderline crazy person who just happens to have great skill as a military man -- but psychologically HE IS NO LONGER THAT! Duh! Obviously! He's a rogue criminal now!!!

This was a good portrayal because it got at this. No, he's not a bad guy -- but he's also not a super-cool, calm, and collected guy either. He's very damaged. He's not some professional military guy anymore-- he has lost that cool (mostly; I guess he keeps it in actual battle).

So he's both psychologically *plausible* and also a bit vulnerable and likable.

But he is, yeah, borderline crazy. Not completely crazy, no, but he's bent.

The show does a great job of threading that needle, making him a guy you could call "crazy" if you wanted, but you can tell, he's not really crazy. Not exactly.

The show describes it as being in this recurrent PTSD nightmare. It works.

I have a pretty good Mellotron virtual synth.

I've looked at getting older synth gear like a Yamaha DX-7, ARP or Oberheim, etc but it's just too hard to get one's in good enough condition for a reasonable price.

The closest I've got is a Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 12 to those classic synths.

Actually I have a collection of a couple 1000 old synth patches that can be run in native instruments virtual synths.

But yes I've resolved myself to spending serious money on a modular rig.

130 I always liked Punisher.

To me, the idea that somebody would not kill a super villain for whatever noble moral seemed incredibly selfish. It's not like the comic books are talking about purse snatching.

So how many catch and releases where the bad guy has 9/11 type scenarios that gets stopped in the nick of time before you have to concede that allowing these people to live is actually a heinous act?

132 The show describes it as being in this recurrent PTSD nightmare. It works.

Hah! So we can talk about this.

I loved the fact that the Punisher was grounded in reality. No superhero schtick. Daredevil just does mostly blind Kung Fu. The whole beginning of the season is "believable" in comic book world.

Elide over Elektra.

Now we get the Hand. I know the Hand is from the comics, and it's canonical, but we've had a comic book series for half a season that's grounded in plausible reality and now we get into spooky spooky but it's from the comics land.

This induced dissonance in me.

Posted by: Bandersnatch at March 25, 2016 06:54 PM (1xUj/)

133 one bad thing about the PUnisher story is that Daredevil almost *immediately* buys into the idea that he's basically a good man (or has part of a good man in him).

It really should have been a longer period of enmity. Daredevil should have been forced to realize the Punisher isn't all bad, instead of almost immediately figuring it out.

but that's because the show is at heart boring and they give up chances for drama and interest whenever they can.

Yes. And Bernthal does a fantastic job. I really like him. Kinda wish now they hadn't killed off Shane on TWD. Although, I do enjoy getting a chuckle out of how all the main characters have basically gone "Full Shane" at this point. Seasons 1 and 2 everyone's looking at Shane like he's a completely unhinged, dangerous nutball, but you look back on it at this point and it's looking more and more like he was the only one who understood what needed to be done. And they're all doing stuff now that's just as bad, if not worse than the stuff Shane did. It just took them a lot longer to reach that point of acceptance.

i just saw dr no last night, and while it wasn't as slow as I remembered (or maybe i've come to respect slow now), also, not a lot happens, either. it's very, very simple.

the dragon is silly.

I read the book a long time ago and didn't much love it.

My favorite bond book is You Only Live Twice, for some reason.

IMHO, because it wasn't an interesting end to the arc of the first set of rebooted movies. All of the first 4 were supposedly tied to this one, but they did a poor job of it.

Also, as others have mentioned here, the character of Blofeld was an empty nothing. His character just didn't work. He shows up and explains how he was connected.

Explanation in a movie is a cardinal sin. You show it. You film it. The more dialog you need to explain a character, the more you demonstrate you hate your craft, your audience, and life in general.

crazy. Not exactly.

The show describes it as being in this recurrent PTSD nightmare. It works.
"

And moreso because Frank shrugs off the PTSD defense partly because "that denigrates the guys who are actually suffering PTSD". He has a sense of nobility wrapped in vengeance and barely contained rage. Punisher has a strict code (no women, no kids, no innocents, never lie, never take a life that hasn't taken another already) and follows it rigidly. Can't wait to see his series (and yes, Netflix is developing one, partly because they liked how Frank turned out in this series).

305 So, random pop culture thing. There's a new series called Flesh and Bone. I think it's Netflix. I watched the first episode.

Upside: It's about a NY ballet company and they show ballerina tits a lot. Me, personally, I'm a fan of A cups on athletic bodies, so ballerina tits is a good thing.

The other side: Our heroine is a working class girl from Pittsburgh. She runs away and gets a tryout with the famous ballet company. She's scorned by all the toffs, but the director sees something unique in her.

She gets the dream gig. Her ballet friend introduces her to the world of stripping on the side.

It's so...is ORIGINAL the word I'm looking for? Perhaps not.

I can't believe I haven't watched episode two of a series about ballet tits.

330 Greetings:

I grew up in the Bronx on the '50s and '60 and went to a Catholic grammar school for the obvious reasons. We would get off for (trigger warning) Easter vacation on the Wednesday before but, being an altar boy, not all my time was allocated to vacating. On Good friday there would be an afternoon service being at 3pm so I would have to un-ass the schoolyard, get gussied up, and to the church on time.

One of the things that has stuck in the Good Friday part of my memory was how often there would be thundershowers. They would roll in, darkening the neighborhood, doing their sound and light show, precipitate for maybe 10 or 15 minutes and then continue on their journey east while the bright spring sunshine would break through the separating and straggling clouds letting me know that the scary darkness had passed and beneficial light was returning.

We have owned a couple. They work really great.
The only problem seems to be when they need to reboot for whatever reason. Screen freezes up. When that happens, just unplug from power for ten seconds or so, then plug it back in, wait about a minute.
We have one that accepts ethernet cable in it, direct from the modem. Obviously that works way better than over wi-fi.
And thanks to the moron who put up the post about the Shroud of Turin. All the press about that item has been less than laudatory until I read this piece.

455 My favorite Bond book is "Moonraker" (Ian Fleming original, not the hack job they did for the Moore film in the 70s). Hugo Drax is just a great villain. The bridge sequence in the beginning is incredibly well written -- I like how Bond tops off with an envelope of Benzedrine to take down Drax -- and it's a great read with Bond's sense of who Drax is and what he's up to wavering back and forth as he investigates. The relationship with Gala Brand was refreshing, too.

I urged them both to find something they loved to do and only go to college if it was necessary... a lot because I didn't want them in debt but some because I didn't want them in the toxic safe spaces that are colleges now.

Thankfully, what they wanted to do just requires quality on the job training.

473 "Do not mistake me, no reasonable man who sees the world as it is, who views the deterioration of our economy, the waning of our relationships with our allies, the growth of [enemy] might and the sufferings of our recent past could underestimate the difficulties before us.

But I wonder if those who doubt America have forgotten that just as in the lives of individuals so too in the lives of nations: it is always when things seem most unbearable that we must have faith that Americas trials have meaning beyond our own understanding.

Since her beginning America has held fast to this hope of divine providence, this vision of man with God.

It is true that world peace is jeopardized by those who view man, not as a noble being but as an accident of nature, without soul, and important only to the extent he can serve an all powerful state.

But it is our spiritual commitment more than all the military might in the world that will win our struggle for peace.

it is not bombs and rockets but belief and resolve. It is humility before God that is ultimately the source of America's strength as a nation.

Our people always have held fast to this belief, this vision, since our first days as a nation."--Ronald Reagen, 1980

Her brother is now working at the local French restaurant as a prep cook (or garde manger if I wanted to get technical and frenchified about it) so that he can train to be a chef.

I urged them both to find something they loved to do and only go to college if it was necessary... a lot because I didn't want them in debt but some because I didn't want them in the toxic safe spaces that are colleges now.

Thankfully, what they wanted to do just requires quality on the job training.

It's a really tiny little thing...but really delivers too.

If you happen to have some non wireless dvd/tv's around that you'd like to connect, it will do so, in high definition. Picture quality is excellent, depending the usual factors that limit wireless bandwidth. Better even than the proprietary wireless adapters that some manufacturers think you should spend upwards of 200 dollars for.

Sony....I'm looking at you.

If you want to connect a wired device that is out of reach of your router, try a TP-Link mini pocket router, which sells for under 15 bucks on Amazon. To the device you connect it to, it looks like a wired ethernet connection to your wireless router.

There's also a breed that lays green eggs. Another that lays double yolked eggs.
Some hens are good setters....in that they'll incubate their eggs. Some don't even do that. Lay em, and forget em.

Also, if you happen to have some turkeys, and bantam chickens, it's always fun to stuff a couple of fertile turkey eggs under a setting bantam hen. And/or duck eggs.

Thank you. We have one auracauna(sp?). At least I think that's what she is. She lays pretty blue eggs. Her mate the huge white rooster was killed by a dog. I didn't think we would be able to get more hens that lay blue eggs.
The Rhode Island Red is starting to get broody, I'm going to put a lot of the blue eggs under her.
This is new to me, we only had hens before. Now we have a rooster.

593 Whoah.

So, kind of a good thing. Just got back from Die Fledermaus v. Der Übermensch
in face-melting Imax 3D. My verdict? Not nearly as awful as I expected.

Affleck makes a surprisingly effective Batman, and Cavill, well, he bonestructures his way through the story adequately, and his tresses can survive a nuclear blast unmussed. The jury is still out on Eisenberg as Lex. I mostly wanted to defenestrate him, but that's his character.

Two jarring things: The CGI Doomsday Staypufft monster, and using actual media personalities as media personalities commenting on the superslugfest. Don't need to see our favorite planetarium gift shop manager pontificate on the insignificance of life on earth and evolution and shit.

So did I enjoy it? Mostly. Will I see it again? Only years from now when it's free on t.v.

Jackson is not, and never will be, anywhere near as good an author as J.R.R. Tolkien. It showed. He should have stuck as close to the plot as Coppola did with Puzo's The Godfather. What Jackson did with LOTR was the equivalent of putting nekkid wimmen mud flaps on a Concours-champion Series 1 E-Type Jaguar.

Long story short: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Yes one of my top picks. When I go with friends to a restaurant that serves their water or drinks in extra large glasses I always stop the waitress and say 'excuse me. I ordered the large glass of _____'

About a week ago I first heard the Spring peepers. I heard them again last night. Hearing them makes me very happy.

730 4 Venture Brothers Season 6 was a VERY good thing. Just too short and sadly cut off before the storylines got resolved. But the Monarch's story was amazing and the last new character introduced, Red Death, instantly became one of their best characters ever.

Relatedly, Clancy Brown is also a Very Good Thing.

I'd rather have the Monarch than Blue Morpho

731 491 ... They have started releasing the Matt Helm books for e-readers. At least for Kindle. Not sure if the entire series has come out yet. They aren't exactly inexpensive but not bad. I still have all my ancient paperback copies.

732 Just got back from seeing Batman V Superman. It was awesome. So many geek worthy moments. It's not perfect by any stretch, it could lose a few scenes to make it leaner and Jesse Eisenberg was horribly miscast but it's really, really good.
