Whither Conservative TV Shows? [OregonMuse]

This has been cross-posted at CDB's Cut. Jib. Newsletter blog.

Andrew Breitbart famously said that politics is downstream from culture. And indeed, it can be persuasively argued that we conservatives are merely spinning our wheels trying to get the right people into elective office while the education-infotainment-media complex is firmly in the grasp of the enemy. What good does it really do us (and the country) when we manage to elect some half-conservative legislator or president while a reliably progressive worldview gets continually broadcast from every TV and movie screen?

Answering that question is beyond the scope of this post. But I would like to point out that there are conservative TV shows out there, programs that have not been swallowed up in the left-wing kultursmog. There aren't very many of them, and I don't know how they managed to get past the progressive gatekeepers. There may be others, but these are the ones I am personally acquainted with:

Firefly: This cult classic made the list not for being overtly "conservative", but mainly for being "not liberal". The universe of Firefly is some other solar system with "dozens of planets and hundreds of moons". Some of these are closer than others to the "core" planets, which are under control of the "Alliance", a plus-sized, technologically-advanced and repressive system of government. The outer planets and moons have less technology, and even less law, i.e Alliance control, but subsequently greater freedom. Firefly producer Joss Whedon, a stereotypical Hollywood lefty, somehow (inadvertently?) imbued Firefly with a heavily libertarian sensibility, which may not be exactly conservative, but it definitely isn't liberal. Progressive fans of the show may be tempted to fantasize about the Alliance being an oppressive right-wing government, but that would make the "Browncoat" rebels rat bastard commie revolutionaries, and that makes no sense. The Browncoats are not interested in destroying civilization and putting a new one in its place, rather, they just want to be left alone. Their motto can best be described as "Don't Tread On Me", not "Workers of the World, Unite".

Almost every science fiction fan, to a man, bemoans the fact that Firefly was yanked after only 11 episodes, and their dreams are filled what could-have-beens. I, however, take the contrarian view that the cancellation of Firefly was A Good Thing, a blessing in disguise that helped preserve it when it was still a quality show. For it would not have continued a quality show. I believe that Joss Whedon's perverse Hollywood lefty views would have eventually seeped into Firefly the way a dead rat behind the baseboard will stink up the entire kitchen. A similar thing happened with Battlestar Galactica, as Jonah Goldberg argues in this Commentary article from 2009.

Duck Dynasty: This is a reality show about an extended family of "rednecks" in Louisiana who have built the company Duck Commander, which sells duck calls and other hunting merchandise. I put the word redneck in quotes because rednecks are stereotypically poor, dumb, lazy, and dysfunctional, but the Robertson clan is rich, smart, industrious, and very successful. So, not typical "rednecks". I'm not sure what the suits at A&E thought they would be getting when they green-lighted this show. I have heard speculation that they expected a show featuring dumb, ignorant rednecks the audience would laugh at, but instead, the audience reaction was pretty much the exact opposite. This is because the Robertsons are not dumb rednecks; they are, in fact, smart rednecks who knew what they're doing.

You get to see the Robertsons' family values in each episode. Like the one where Willie had to buy a prom dress for his daughter. He returned one because, as he explained to the store clerk, "it doesn't have enough material in it".

In real life, Phil Robertson has caused controversy because he believes that homosexuality is unnatural, perverted, and harmful, and is not shy about saying so in public. This has caused progressive crybullies to weep and and wail and gnash their teeth, but the Robertsons did not back down. So the progressive lynch mob demands for the cancellation of Duck Dynasty failed.

Every episode ends of Duck Dynasty with the entire family at dinner as grace is being said. You can't get much more conservative than that.

The Men Who Built America: This miniseries made the list because to be pro-American these days is to be conservative, and there are few TV programs I've ever seen which sing the praises of America louder than this one.

The series focus is on the industrial and financial tycoons of the early 20th century, men such Cornelius Vanderbilt, John D Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, J. P. Morgan and Henry Ford. Now, you would expect a modern documentary about these men to automatically take the Zinn/Chomsky/commie agitator view, i.e. the only thing about the industrialists worth knowing is that they were greedy fat cats who built their empires on the backs of oppressed workers. And while this documentary does not shy away from discussing the titanic egos of the tycoons, the poor and dangerous working conditions and low wages afforded to many workers, the emphasis is on what the industrialists achieved and how it transformed The United States of America from being just another country into the most powerful nation on earth.

As the last line of the series says, "They didn't discover this modern America -- they built it."

Another great thing about this series is its kickass intro soundtrack. You can also listen to the full-length version.

Last Man Standing: Tim Allen's latest incarnation is Mike Baxter, a marketing director for a Denver-based sporting goods store who lives with his wife, a geological scientist-turned-schoolteacher, and their three grown or nearly-grown daughters. Baxter likes to think of himself as an alpha male, and he's fond of expounding his politically conservative opinions, whether his liberal wife or really liberal son-in-law want him to or not. The sniping back and forth is pretty funny, and Last Man's writers show Baxter as worthy of respect, not ridicule or contempt, and truth be told, more time is spent making the progressive son-in-law look like a P.C. dweeb than Baxter's conservative foibles.

Shark Tank: This is a reality show wherein entrepreneurs and would-be entrepreneurs seeking to obtain funding for their companies, so they come on to make a sales pitch to the "sharks", that is, a group of 5 venture capitalists who have been wildly successful at their own enterprises and have money to invest. The deals usually consist of a requests for 'X dollars for Y percent equity in my company." Sometimes all the sharks take a pass. Sometimes more than one see the profit potential and so the entrepreneur has to make a choice between 2 or more offers. It's quite interesting to watch the infighting and the counter-offers as well as the products and services being funded. One product, a plastic cover to temporarily store wet paintbrushes, so impressed Mrs. Muse that we looked up where they were sold locally and bought a few for ourselves.

Shark Tank assumes the validity and value of entrepreneurship and free-market capitalism. Winners who have been capitalized by the sharks always say how many jobs their successful companies have created and how this benefits their communities.

One of the sharks, African-American fashion CEO Daymond John, works with groups trying to teach entrepreneurship and business skills to inner city minorities. When I saw that, I thought, now that's the way to help minorities, giving them the skills they need to succeed, rather than aggravate grievances. Thus has Mr. John has done more good than all of the bellowing of Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson's silly rhyming combined.

The Last Ship: The storyline of this science fiction series concerns the crew of a USN destroyer that is in the Arctic regions when a virus breaks out and devastates the rest of the world. They're up there in the north with a virologist who had advanced warning of the outbreak and who is desperately working on a vaccine. The show is mostly well-scripted and suspenseful, but aside from that, it is one of the most overtly conservative television shows we have ever seen. For example, terrorists are shown not as sympathetic losers of life's lottery, but as psychotic thugs who should never be negotiated with, but rather shot on sight or drop ordnance on. And prayer. 3 or the episodes we've seen so far, 3 had either prayers or a strong statement of faith in God from one of the crew members. Another one showed that men and women serving in close ship quarters is basically a bad idea. And the captain is a strong, patriarchal alpha male who knows it is up to him to protect his family from harm. And for extra conservative bonus points, his XO is played by Adam Baldwin.

One of the executive producers of The Last Ship is Michael Bay, who also produced the movie about Benghazi, 13 Hours.

Blue Bloods: This drama series tells the story of the Reagans, a family whose members are all police officers of the NYPD (the daughter is an ADA). Tom Selleck is the family patriarch, who is the NYC Police Commissioner, and his father occupied the same position before he retired. The Reagans are an Irish-Catholic family, and matters of faith and religion are treated with seriousness and respect. The plot of more than one episode had someone's faith either tested or brought into conflict with the performance of job duties. The parents are strong, in control, and the kids aren't your typical worldly, cynical wise-asses. And it accomplishes all of this without being preachy.

So these are the conservatives TV shows I've found. Let me know if you've found any others that I've missed.

It is at worst agnostic.

I'd say it leans towards "tough reality based libertarian" OM.

Take the main characters thus far:

1) Eponymous Saul Goodman/nee Jimmy McGill-essentially a cutthroat Legal Gun For Hire retired conman... absolutely willing to give his clients the best of legal defense regardless of ethics.

2) Mike-grizzled cynical cop whose only soft area of his life is his relationship with his son's widow and his granddaughter. Willing to work on the other side of the law now without remorse because he is totally accepting that all of the system is for sale.

The principled characters do lean liberal and they are wildly ineffective because of it.

The show also actively looks down on people who do rely on government aid or grift the system to work in the shadows AND take aid.

The show does mock the lunatic fringes of the libertarian thought process at times but mostly respects those who cut their own path.

I finally graduated to a zero hour per week watcher, stopped paying DirecTV a cent, haven't even hooked up the OTA antenna even though I got the best one on the market sitting in the garage, and canceled Netflix. Blood pressure dropped ten points at least and I think the IQ increased the same amount!

Give me a library card and the Sunday Book Thread and I'm good to go!

Mad Men is also anchored in the real world, where, in Thatcher's words, "the facts of life are conservative." As a business, Sterling Cooper (in its various iterations) has to recognize and reward talent and hard work -- not always perfectly, admittedly, Joan shows a real flair for account executive work early on but isn't recognized for it until season 6 I think -- but unless it does so, its competitors will.

Daredevil seems conservative because it deals with injustice and confronting it with force.

The moral hazard it is facing this season is rather than having largely apolitical organized criminals as the opfor they are going to have a white male gun nut as the "anti-antagonist."

I will be thrilled to be wrong, and pleased if they can resist the temptation to get preachy.

I don't tune in to Daredevil to see Alan Alda in red pajamas.

44 I was a serious BSG fan from 2004 until the end. Yeah, there were times current politics crept into the show. Some of that is the fact that they were scrambling for materials because they had written themselves into a corner again. But at no point in the show did any goofy liberalism lead to anything good. Even in the confused mess that was the finale, "Daybreak Part 2."

And the actors I have met have been uniformly nice folks. Well, except Gaeta. Guess he was PMSing.

I'm halfway through and they've done a good job so far. Castle isn't the big bad of the season, and they do a good job showing him as something other than a cartoonish anti-hero/villain.

Jason Bourne using a dead body for cushion while falling down a staircase is great shot in Identity. The other two sequels kinda was lost on me, car chase in Supremacy was done well, but I was especially let down with Ultimatum. But IMHO rarely is any sequel as good as the first.

To be fair, he's pretty staunchly catholic and that affects his attitudes. The other piece is that it brings up the interesting debate between vigilantism and the rule of law.

They took a show that had a moral base that looked like it was 90s San Francisco and confronted it with the necessity to embrace a slightly modified WW2 martial outlook and decided to do a hero-villain crossover swerve and were writing the cylons as the more moral force by the middle of season 3.

64 40 The first season of Last Man Standing was really good. It was the sitcom that network TV was missing. It wasn't overtly political, but it was *about* a grouchy Republican - Tim Allen - and he was much less buffoonish than his Home Improvement shtick.

So of course the studio got the vapors over its success after the first season, *fired the actress playing his oldest daughter over "creative differences"* (we can guess what those were), and hired a daughter to preach to him about Obamacare. Also, changed his wife into a liberal instead of a moderate. That's leaving aside the fact they discarded a full season of audience investment in the oldest daughter, who was a single mother.

I watched a few more episodes in 2012 that ended with Tim being femmesplained about the great benefits afforded by Our President's great policies and then quit. Basically, ABC realized they had created a show on network television that didn't Lean Forward, so they quickly corrected that.

This would be the million pound shithammer of doom for Hollyweird profits, and it would blow a giant hole below the waterline in the financing system of the institutional left, to whom a whole lot of those profits end up being directed.

92 "The Middle" is a great family sitcom of people who are lower middle class and live in middle America. Really funny, and even though the kids bicker with each other, they also really love each other.

Also "The Americans" is very pro-America. The lefties who watch the show root for the Russian spies who pretend to be Americans, but I root for the good guys. The show delves into the soullessness of the Soviet system, their hatred of religion (the spy couple's daughter has become a born-again Christian), the idea of being a free citizen as opposed to being owned by the State (Russia believes that any citizen or offspring of a citizen should be a dutiful drone of theirs, to be done with as they see fit), and the Russians' fear of Reagan. The season finale for Season 3 was particularly effective, with Reagan's speech about the evil empire playing in the background. For me, this is a must watch show; I only wish they did more than 13 episodes per season.

158 I think another factor which "liberalizes" TV is the phony baloney view of the average American. Everybody has cool friends and cool lovers and cool cars and cool stuff. TV poor is much better than average American. The have-nots watch that and feel cheated.

I remember, for example, on Veronica Mars, the premise was that her father was too honest to be sheriff so they had to live off hisow rent private eye business. Yet Veronica had a cool convertible, had a cooler phone than mine, and bought all sorts of spy gadjets.

I remember in one episode she narrowed down a missing person to one of several hundred similarly named men. She sent out bait letters to each design to elicit a response from only the target. Postage alone would have run close to a hundred dollars the there is the paper, envelopes, and ink. Poor people don't spend the dinner money like that.

That's an interesting observation.

There are the occasional lefty-sentimental moments --- "I designed this dress in memory of my little brother, who committed suicide after being bullied for his sexuality!"--- and superficially the participants are properly PC.

But you're right. The show is a tribute to hard work and to persevering in the face of criticism, mistakes made, and bad luck. No excuses. Suck it up and carry on.

194 I don't really care if shows are conservative per se, I just want to be entertained. But, I find excessive moralizing to be very offputting. Knocks me right out of the story. And you can't do the PC/SJW/lefty moralizing and still write a good story. Instead, the lecture becomes the main point of the experience. And who wants to waste their time on that.

The Jonah Goldberg article that OregonMuse linked to makes that
point very well regarding Battlestar Galactica. The first two seasons
were great, but when they switched to whole occupation storyline, it
wrecked the series. Instead of having a good story be the top goal,
instead it was delivering a lecture. Dumb, and even worse, boring.

Some have mentioned Better Call Saul. I wouldn't call that show conservative, but it meets my criteria for good entertainment. Good storytelling without the lefty lectures.

Though HBO is a very leftwing organization, many of their shows have been good in this way: Sopranos, The Wire, True Detectives, Generation Kill, Rome, Deadwood, Game of Thrones, etc.

And as someone who can't even sew buttons back on, I was amazed at their skills. To be able to have a concept, draw it, pick the materials, and then make an outfit from start to finish, under stress and time deadlines. Wow.

I never have been a TV watcher, except when HGTV first came out; I did watch a lot of those shows, but then it went to mostly real estate shows, and the design shows that were left all jumped on the 60s/70s design trends. I quit watching probably about ten years ago.

The Night Manager which will air on AMC in April. Better to catch the BBC version which is airing now. The BBC format forces their shows to be slightly edited. AMC asked that they make the show longer but the BBC refused. It is only 6 episodes but there are talks about a second season. It's very stylish. Hugh Laurie is an evil arms dealer. I would think that you might like Tom Hiddleston better. Didt you hear that his bum broke the intenet last Sunday?

It's more and more difficult to watch TV without yelling at the set. Even, or especially, the commercials drive me up the wall with their constant denigration of anything male, at least adult, white males. There isn't one news service on TV worth the time. The shows I watched for years are aging (NCIS) or the plot went to hell (Castle). The comedies are just half hour insult fests. And the assumption that if you are over 25, you aren't worth the attention is wearing. That leaves "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" on Hallmark and a few British mysteries on PBS. (NOT Sherlock!)

TV is leaving me, not the other way around.

There was a lot of help from the outside in care packages for needed raw materials sent requests to British in secret and got things needed. 50 were shot in retaliation. Three did escape, 2 Norwegians and a Dutch.

297 Not necessarily political/conservative but a little bootstrapy are all of the Alaska shows. "Alaska the last frontier", "Life Below Zero", "Mountain Men" there is also "life free or die" an off grid reality type show. All of these show hunting, fire arms, self sufficiency and a surprising amount of intelligence.
Many seem to be very non materialistic, have a great attitude and seem very appreciative of what they have, how they live and are genuinely happy to be alive. I hope shows like that inspire a younger generation.
The a la carte stuff that is offered on ROKU is pretty awesome too..

The King of Queens. Jerry Stiller's father-in-law character was portrayed as a far leftist... and batshit crazy out of his mind, thoughtless, and ridiculously greedy/shortsided.

Meanwhile anytime anything sociological or political-wise showed up, it seems like the show usually took the conservative side.

A GREAT episode of KoQ was when, to decrease their taxes, the lead couple (Doug and Carrie, played by Kevin James and Leah Remini) decide to donate to the nearby elementary school library. But Carrie insists on having public credit for the donation... which screws everything up in really funny ways. Marla Gibbs had a cameo as a kindly old librarian.

I gave "Blue Bloods" a shot when I first heard it referred to as "conservative" but the program I saw was about a young white male veteran being murdered by three white male yuppies which provokes a nearby Negro security guard to confess that he too had some serious problems when he got home from his military service all of which, in turn, made the veteran detective son go off the deep end and abuse the human rights of the three yuppies. That was where I got off that bus.

The larger point though is important enough that I often wonder if any social scientists study and/or publish about it. For me the current state of the "over-the-air" programming is borderline intolerable not just because of what's in the programs themselves but the relentless progressive messages imbedded in commercials and Public Service announcements. If repetition is the basis of propaganda, Progressives, as used to be said in introducing a TV program of my youth, "have taken control of our TV sets."

My conclusion is that it will be Stupid White Guy commercials for the rest of my duration.

And there you have it! Podcasts, free or otherwise, are the way to go -- you choose the content and you choose when to listen, not watch. Thus you can listen while doing other things.

I am at the part where the Punisher kidnapped DD and tries to force him to shoot a gun by threatening to kill a bad guy in front of him (who just happens to be DD's client). To me, the Punisher (the gun guy) comes off as majorly unhinged and the show is really stressing that DD is way better than the Punisher because he doesn't use a gun.

The Jesse Stone series is also one of my favorites, although it isn't that old. Started in 2005, and the most recent one came out late last year. There's also another one in production. CBS bailed on their end of the production deal, not because of bad ratings but because it wasn't appealing to the "right" demographic. So now it's being made in partnership with the Hallmark Channel.

All are available for purchase on Amazon Prime, and once you own them, you can run your own marathon!

A really old show that's still good is The Life And Legend Of Wyatt Earp (1955).

Hugh O'Brian, the actor who plays Earp, is handsome and cool. The actor who plays Doc Holliday is a mean, angry jerk who steals every scene he's in.

Funny you should post this, Oregon Muse, since I was pondering this very thing earlier today whilst noticing the subtleties of a Bud Lite commercial, specifically the preponderance of the color blue, which also just happens to be really close to the color the MFM uses to identify the Dim party.

Anyway, there are two very power things going on with regard to the overarching messages being conveyed to the American Public:

1: They're being told that they're smarter and more wonderful than ever before in the history of history. Everyone is above average.

And

2. They're being fed nothing but bullshit.

J.K. Rowling of the "Harry Potter" books fame is a noted socialist in her political beliefs, butshe wrote "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". Now she may have intended the government to be evil right wingers, but it didn't read that way to me. 435 I'd also like to mention Scorpion. This season the plots are more fun, plus they turn various liberal cliches on their head. Like one episode, the girl goes under cover at a sorority and is all "what a bunch of white beeyotches" and then they school her on how nice it is to have a sort-of home since they left their own, and she could enjoy it too if she would let her armor down a little.

So yeah, I recommend Scorpion.

Also, Walking Dead is my favorite. Dares to have adults acting in heroic struggles.

438 Breaking Bad is pretty apolitical, but Vince Gilligan, the series creator, is conservative. Also, BB and Better Call Saul do have a bit of a conservative vibe to them, in the sort of world they depict. The shows have sort of a Mike Rowe-like obsession with real, non-yuppy work, most of the characters are uncool, middle-aged, middle class, usually married. Basically, they're as far away as you can get from the world of 30-something singles who sleep around a lot and never do anything that looks like a real job that has become a staple of sitcoms since at least Friends.

I'll add the sitcom "black-ish" to the list, despite their devoting an episode to why black people always vote for Democrats. (The reason: They just do; always have.) The show focuses on an upper-middle-class black family with married parents, four kids, and the grandfather and sometimes grandmother - the grandparents are divorced.

It seems that one of the themes every week is that hard work and merit are the ways to advance.

The show is also quite funny so I recommend it. A sample: The MLK Day episode. The wife, a medical doctor, kept air-quoting "Doctor" King. When called on it, she explained that it's not like he was a real doctor. "If you have a heart attack, I can use a defibrillator and save your life, or you can get a Ph.D. to say a few fancy words, put a book on your chest and hope for the best."

Progressives who have their hearts in the right place and are trying to do what Hollywod leftists would consider the right thing are almost universally depicted as impotent less because of Republican opposition than because of the personal ambitions of more powerful progs.

Republicans and conservatives are openly depicted as being the champions of bad ideas, but it's the Democrats who are shown to be destructive.

443 You missed the MOST CONSERVATIVE show on all of TV, it's called The Middle. It's a show about a normal, middle American family living in small-town Indiana. It portrays a traditional family -- father, mother, and 3 kids. The show treats the family members respectfully and the characters are smart, good people. Patricia Heaton is fantastic (and she's an outspoken conservative in real life). Best of all, the show is hilarious!

445 I have to admit to occasionally watching NCIS when I have some free time even though it is not as good as it was in the past (IMHO I know). Pretty hooked on Elementary, which is really not a conservative show, but not really a liberal show either- however it does tend to be very anti-big business at times. Was very excited when Netflix picked up Longmire- contemporary Western set in Wyoming. Longmire reminds me of a throwback TV show- slower paced with lots of characterizations and very dependent on location. The lead character, Sheriff Longmire, is not perfect by any means, but has a strong moral compass. Started streaming Person of Interest on some strong recommendations and am liking it so far. There are bad guys and good guys and the idea that one makes choices and deals with the consequences. Interesting to read everyone else's comments- may have to try some of the other shows discussed.

The woman of the team was once voted best female role model in SciFi. And it shows, Doctor and Officer. In 10 seasons there are maybe 2-3 episodes where it's even mentioned she's a woman. No feminism here. She's not one of the guys, she's a member of the team.

Watch it and see how much Liberalism is NOT there. It's refreshing. It doesn't really -push- Conservatism...it's just there.
