The Happiness Thread [FenelonSpoke]

Open thread for non-happy things directly below. This post for Happy things and friendly talk only.

In case you hadn't noticed, dear horde, things have been rather stressful in the AoSHQ community lately. ;^) What with emotions running high over the election and strong feelings about the candidates we support, as well as the current direction of our country it's not exactly picnic time by a lazy river on a warm summers day. When you couple that with anxiety over jobs, finances, health concerns, etc things can sometimes feel overwhelming.

However, to be in a constant state of stress and fear about the future is not a healthy thing for ourselves or anyone else we have to live or interact with. You know one thing that helps with stress? -- laughter and a smile. Enjoy this video of laughing babies which our internet friend, Backwards Boy, posted this morning


It's also good if you can to be reminded of the simple blessings in your life. Although not everyone here is a person of religious faith, here is some good advice offered from Saint Paul in the New Testament:

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable -- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy -- think about such things.

When you think of lovely, praiseworthy, admirable things what comes to mind? What are you grateful for today? What brings a smile in your life?

17 Years ago, I was advised to create a gratitude list every day, to remind myself of all the good things in my life. That daily practice has made me a much happier person. Highly recommended.

46 When I worked for the state, every week had at least one "party" celebrating... whatever it took to get cookies and stuff put on a table. A lot of the time the food was pretty good, but it was all an excuse to have cakes and cookies and stuff. There was a reason the women that worked there has a rear end the size of four ordinary people.

I kid you not, they had to sit on at least two side by side chairs at a time. It was terrifying.

47 riding makes me happy. My little mare is sound so far after needing 8 months off after leg injuries last year. My gelding is going well.

Growing plants makes me happy. I'm not a gardener, but have a couple of office plants staying alive and got a few zukes last summer.

49 That was where I first tried MRE's. They were pretty new at the time, around Desert Storm. The food was good, but really dense and packed with energy. I could see how they would wear on someone after a while.

60 I had a successful work trip today. Got to finally meet my new boss formally after almost 3 months of working with him. He's a great guy.

Also.had a good meeting with the client and got some great Greek food in the process.

And my boss told me that the VP level guy who had questioned whether it's time for me to get a promotion has now given it the green light.

Overall I am grateful to God that He has allowed me to have a solid well paying job and extremely fulfilling job doing something I love in this economic climate. I know that isn't the case for so many, unfortunately.

Lastly, although I am in a hot tiny plane, I am grateful not to be the tall guy who was in front of me who had to lower his head during the long wait to get to his seat!

Psychology was one area, but so was Biology, Pharmacy, Chemistry, Medicine, and so on. The linked article runs it down, along with hosts of links to studies and reports. Its a serious crisis in scientific study at the moment.

It makes me giggle at people who trust science as their religion: it can do no wrong, we can trust our priests scientists!

65 FS, Thanks for this happiness post. I have cut back on political and 'cultural' matters because living like a constantly erupting volcano (this is serious understatement) isn't healthy or satisfying.

Putting together that journal about our pets has been wonderful. One account for a future post may be the basis for a children's story, written just for my own enjoyment and amusement. The typewriter is on the desk and I keep smiling as I think up some scenes. There are worse ways to spend time.

74 Lets see, I figured out how I'm going to do the poisons section of my fantasy sourcebook today, that's a nice breakthrough. I'm writing a sort of field guide for the fantasy setting I'm releasing slowly, with plants, animals, and tradeskill information like a MMOG so you can build things and create stuff from the bits you find in the game. Its for Fantasy Hero but would work with some small modification for any game. As far as I know, nobody else has ever put out anything like this.

In terms of other books, I sold about 20 books last month, which is nearly 1 a day - a huge month of sales for me. So for those of you who bought a book of mine: thanks and I hope you enjoy it!

89 My youngest grandson, who's six now, had a stroke when he was a little tiny fella. Affected his right side, and his speech is affected since, unlike most people who already know how to talk when they have a stroke, he had to learn the whole thing with a handicap.
Anyway, we took him out to lunch on Sunday, and I watched him color on the kids' menu using his left hand, and it's obvious that he'd be right handed if he could be but damn! he's come so far!

And that's what makes me happy.

Okay, I know this is a happy thread but the wierdest thing happened to
me yesterday morning and this morning. I woke up and my eyes (eyelids)
and under my eyes were swollen and puffy. I look like fucking death. I
mean I am almost 62, so starting to show my age a little and I don't
need this shit!! What can I do? Make it stop!!!!

A doc once told my husband that if his allergies flare, take a pepcid once a day for the entire allergy season. Really seems to help him.

102 Happy thought: only 5 days until Bach's birthday; his music always lifts my spirits when the state of the gummint/country/world gets me down (and yes, I always thought it's fitting that most years Bach's Geburtstag coincides with the spring equinox).

'Nother happy thought: only 2 and a half weeks until Opening Day. Even though my team was a joke last year and will likely rent the basement of both leagues again this year.

Third happy thought: watching teh kittehs sharing the same cat bed and grooming each other. Given the scary circumstances from which they were both rescued, it's a joy to see them enjoying each other and their new life. I find myself thinking that if humans were as thankful for the basics as rescued pets are, we'd be better people as well as happier.

And adding my thanks to FenelonSpoke for the idea of a happiness thread.

Haha, no. My romantic life has been in deathly hibernation for a while.

It just happens at random times. Usually it's just a swollen upper lip. It's some kind of allergic reaction, I think, and I have no idea what to.

It's not serious, it just temporarily hurts my vanity and I'm usually back to normal in a few hours.

Take a stroll through the piles and boxes and the ereader. I did that a few days ago and was delighted at so many really neat books I had never read and forgotten about. (This won't help find space for all of them but oh well.) There is years of enchantment and pleasure just waiting to be explored. By my standards, that is happiness.

131 I made a deal with the devil (wifey) to adopt two rescued Maine Coons. I knew she would be relentless after we lost the last of the great Himalayan brothers Ernest and Julio. So I said "I want big cats" like a lion roaming the house. Yikes. They are about a year old, brother and sister, Patch and Fluff.
Whoa, now that they are getting comfortable they are eating us out of house and home. And they talk all the time. I keep coughing up hair balls but so glad we did it. Their owner had died and his family just threw them into the street until a neighbor rescued them but couldn't keep them so they lived in her garage. Now they own this place. Lol. Oh well, I have a character flaw. I love cats and seeing my wife happy. That are indoor kitties, but Patch has already gone through the. Screen 3 times going after birds. He's a brute. Takes a running start and there's no stopping him.

So I'm still a young'un but I'm cursed with super pale skin and very blue veins. As a result, I have constant dark circles.

I've tried so many products but the best I've found are the ones that have caffeine in them. Sounds gimmicky but they work.

Now the next tip I have is to bring your concealer down toward your cheek in a triangle instead of just applying it directly under the eye. This hides the puffiness better. I personally like Benefit concealer but they all work ok.

The blue-eyed feline princess issued a long quavery meow, Mom correctly identified which cat it was by her voice, and asked me to give her a pat.

Two things became clear:
1) the cats still love me and don't care who wins the nomination
2) the cats are badly overdue for a nail trim.

Share the present with those who share your immediate space (put away digital media). Have a pleasant conversation.

Enjoy the stirrings of spring, especially if you have a garden, even if it's only a balcony garden. Plant some seeds and watch them sprout. Watch a nature cam (such as the Codorus eagles in PA - two eggs expected to hatch around Easter weekend).

Go for a walk and look for swelling buds on the trees, or sprouting crocuses and daffodils. Nature puts our own little problems into perspective.

And if you do believe in God, remember that His plan is bigger than anything you can imagine. Put your problems in His hands and go about enjoying the moment.

I've started using L'Oreal's Revitalift Double Lifting Eye Cream. One part goes under your eye, one part goes on the upper eyelid. I think maybe it's helping. I also use L'Oreal Miracle Blur on the rest of my face, because goodness knows, my face needs to be blurred.

186 Congrats Dan!!!! As a dad of two beautiful daughters there's nothing better! It's a cliché and everyone will say it, but enjoy it. It goes way too fast. In all honesty the years when they were really little didn't seem too. Mine are older now, a teen and a tween. No longer are the days when they would both run and yell Daddy!!!! when I get home. Now any acknowledgement is good. But I miss that, it just stopped one day and I took it for granted. Don't do that. Enjoy all the little things. Even the things that piss you off in the moment, like the time my oldest gave all her barbies a "bath" in the toilet and clogged it up good. Enjoy it all, knowing that one day they will grow up and you WILL want those moments back. I am blessed with great kids and I wish you all the joy that comes with it!

I did the best research I could but I wasn't 100% on all the guns, having not fired any of them. My editor was Navy so he helped me with some but he was Navy so he wasn't exactly an expert, heh.

220 I have things to be thankful for today. My surgeon is a genius and he let me keep the loose screw as a joke. The Horde prayed for me and it helped. My husband was able to be at my surgery, even though he might leave soon. My daughter is in the care of grandparents and is having the time of her life. My cats are cuddling with me on the couch.

And oh yeah, God gave us brains to come up with things like Oxy.

I'm grateful for my Mini-14. And my Remington 700. Oh ... and the 870 too. Well hell - my .357 and snub-nose .38 are both pretty sweet. And you know - for what I paid - that SKS has been one hell of a value. And the 597 has been a great .22.

And the kids flat out love those Hi-Point 995s. They're so cute, shooting those things at 75 yards, filling up 2" groupings. Just makes me want to hug 'em.

FenelonSpouse drove a bus for the girl's hs lacrosse team yesterday. That is a sport where they do not stop; They run all the time. Wow!

I once had a boy in one of my confirmation classes who had to miss some classes because of games. He is a nice boy. I went home and said something about hist not being able to come to class because of "lifting high lacrosse". That was a hymnal joke because we have a song; "Lift High The Cross"

Apparently in real life it was some other gun though.

The Luger doesn't have an external hammer to cock. The "operator" loads the chamber by racking the slide. There is no way to decock a Luger other than dry-firing it to release the firing pin. Again. not throwing stones and looking for advance copies of future books!

I am happy that my elderly kitty is still on this side of the dirt. Otherwise I would be completely unsupervised.

I am happy that the ferocious windstorm this weekend only did damage to the ancient shed I'm tearing down this year anyway, and all of the debris landed on my property and not my long-suffering neighbor's.

I am happy I work in a building with the most amazing view. I get to watch the sun rise over mountains. Even when it is raining, the mist hides in the pine-covered hills and looks mysterious. Also my co-workers aren't there that early and I can get work done :-D

And I'm very happy I finished the bloody book!

I've been reading ace of spades HQ since the first time Instapundit linked to in the early days of blogs. I've always enjoys the witty comments and I've enjoy reading ace for years. I went through the good times in the early Iraq war and then the bad times as things fell apart. I enjoyed the endless asskicking we gave the Democratic idiots in congress and how we helped knock Kerry out in 04. The pudding and anal ewok stuff are still some of my favorites internet memes.

While things have taken a less comradely turn of late and I was banned on 2 of my 3 computing devices(Once for cause and another without warning or reason), I hope that once this primary is over we can return to normal. I'd like to thank Ace & Crew for all the wonderful years on this blog and I hope that we can be one big and happy family again in the near future.

Probably boiled the eggs too roughly. Puncture each egg at the rounded end (where the air pocket is) to prevent "exploding or escaping whites, then place them in water to cover and bring them to a boil. Just enough to get big bubbles rising. Turn down heat to maintain this "barely boiling" state, and give them 8 minutes. You don't want them banging around in the pot. This method will never give you green/gray coatings on them (high heat produces the sulfuric smell and green color).

302 Pets are the greatest thing ever. There are days where literally the only good thing that I can think of is my little furbaby Digby, who I love more than some of my own blood relatives.

I'm grateful that both my parents are still alive and probably will be for several years yet to come, difficult as it is to see them age. They'll always be in their 30s in my mind.

I'm grateful that my grandfather gave me a healthy fear, respect, and admiration for firearms, and that I have a powerful way to protect myself as a single female living alone. CCW license holder for four years now. Currently saving up for a Glock 43 to accompany my Taurus revolver.

I'm grateful that God still loves me even though I've done some really bad stuff in my past, and get quite angry at Him for things that aren't His fault. Worst vice at the moment is my predilection for cursing (cussing?), but that's insanely tame in comparison to some of the aforementioned really bad stuff.

And lastly, I'm grateful that I'm still not sick of the same music that I've been listening to since the mid 80s when I was 14 and my sister introduced me to 'college radio.' Because so much of the new music now is absolute garbage and music is what keeps me sane.

Oh yeah, and I'm grateful for Ace and all of y'all. Order of news sites I check in the morning are Ace and then Drudge. Don't comment much, but I'm lurking all the time and you guys are pretty damn funny.

All sources of the Torah mention "Philistines" in the south-Canaan area: including the Samaritans, the Greek Septuagint, and the Dead Sea Scrolls. This isn't even controversial.

But outside the Torah, the Samaritans didn't copy the Bible (at all) and the Greeks didn't *translate* the Bible so closely. The Greeks said Goliath was an "Allophyle". (Like a Pamphylian?). The Greeks then went on to translate Amos such that God brought the Allophyles from Cappadocia (the old Hittite heartland) and not "Philistines" from "Kaptor" whatever that is.

Maybe the first copies of Chronicles might help triangulate the Book of Kings here - oh wait, there's only one copy of Chronicles in the Dead Sea Scrolls and it's a torn up piece of mess :^/

Thankful for husband as St. Patrick's Day is our anniversary. Feeling hopeful for new doctor he is seeing for back pain, and a diagnostic test tomorrow (unusual way to spend anniversary, no?).

Thankful, also, to find a lesson learned, after a friend's sudden death last week, in living each day as she did: with joy, seeing past sadness, illness, and other things. Putting others first. I will miss her joy, her wisdom, and her humor, but she knew how to live. I had not known the word, "bereft" until reading of her death on her facebook (she was a Florida friend). I am not a "weeper" but made up for it that day (husband, sons,brothers, all men in life, have no idea what to do when I lose it. As rare as hen's teeth. My husband "patted me" as I had meltdown. ha. Another lesson learned from her sudden death: tell your friends and family TODAY that you love them. She knew I loved her, but sudden death brings it all in caps to tell people immediately. Which reminds me - one of my brother's had cancer in his neck and the upper lobe of his left lung. He's been through hell in the past year (the indignities that vall cancer patients suffer, including having to have all of his teeth pulled at the age of 55). Despite the fact that he is relentlessly negative, this trial really brought about a change in his attitude, and he is now cancer-free. Thank God the Philly VA is one of the better ones.

Tonight I opened a bottle of merlot and toasted my husband, who went to the great Beyond a little over two years ago. He was my fairy tale and God's greatest blessing. It was an honor to be his wife, and I just toasted God as well for that marvelous, marvelous gift.

I also thank God for being laid off - He clearly has plans for my future and now I need to raise my head and look into that future for the changes that I need in my life.

Thank you, God! I am confident in Your love and strive to be in a state of grace to receive Your wisdom.

340 grammie, they're saying (well, the guy who kicked my butt on Wikipedia said) that "Philistine" might have been a term that the proto-Rabbis stuck onto the later books of the Bible *after* the Alexandrian Jews had already translated the lot into Greek.

The Dead Sea Scrolls helped. Before the Dead Sea Scrolls, the state of the Hebrew text of the Bible was unknown prior to the Middle Ages. The Dead Sea Scrolls helped a LOT, especially for the Torah, because there's a lot of Torah in the Dead Sea Scrolls. (Jews? Interested in Torah? Unpossible!)

But for the Books of Kings, Amos, Chronicles and such - the Dead Sea Scrolls don't cover as much of the text. And that's where the Greek translations start getting creative. Or, that's where the proto-Rabbis started rewriting the books. Or both. I don't know. No-one knows...

I'm still bummed about Keith Emerson's death. I've been listening to ELP on YourToob like crazy and have seen more heartfelt comments for him than I've seen for many of the other rockers we've lost this year. Literally every single song I've seen on YT has the same sentiments.

360 I'm still bummed about Keith Emerson's death. I've been listening to ELP on YourToob like crazy and have seen more heartfelt comments for him than I've seen for many of the other rockers we've lost this year. Literally every single song I've seen on YT has the same sentiments.

370 I'm grateful for my best friend and his family, who basically treat me like one of their own ever since I moved here from Florida. His mother cooked an extra Easter meal for me since she's going to be out of town and had a mutual acquaintance drop it off.

Some people are just awesome. Little things like that can be huge morale boosters when it often feels like the whole world (aside from your workplace and immediate circle) is against you.

All the same, there is indeed something to be happy about and thankful for in this season: despite all the dreadful things and all this d----d basketball. The living year, the year that matters, begins in mid-February and ends with the last out in the last game of the Series; everything else - politics, war, crashes, riots, heresies - is mere existence.

My Dad has gotten like this. He's been a staunch Republican his whole life. He's more old school and all the turmoil has him riled up to the point that I don't even want to listen as he's so damn mad. We disagree about the GOPe but we're at my Daughters basketball game on Sat. and he's chewing my ear off getting all pissy (and loud since he's deaf damn near) And I finally had to say Dad, I am here to watch the game! Of course I got the Dad silent treatment after that which my Wife and I were just fine with. Life's too short to spend the whole day mad!!! There's too many good things! Yea, my rageometer pegs and I get mad, but then I remember the bigger picture. Thanks Fen. This place needed it.

I don't remember who said that, but that's what I play now and I hear an awful lot of truth in it that I never heard when I was a younger musician.

There are so many good things to be gleaned from it: American history, human nature, heartfeltnessism (that is too a word!) awesome musicianship and so much more.

Once when we were about 5 or 6 he threw a rock at my head and got me in the temple. Both our mothers happened to witness it and came running outside. I ran up to my mom bleeding and crying my head off and Mrs. McS gave Tom a hard smack on the butt and he started crying.

"Why did you throw that rock at Donna?" she said.

"Because I LIKE her!" he blubbered.

It was 1974, and the movie was a really unusual animated movie called "Fantastic Planet".

Went to see "Blazing Saddles" a few weeks later with the same girl. We laughed our asses off. There was a black lady behind us that we thought was going to have a heart attack, because she was laughing so hard.

427 I just x-rayed my bay stallion's feet, and the damage i feared was not severe. I am very grateful. He was a gentleman during the whole process and the vet praised him highly as a perfect horse. I was chuffed. The new stable we built last summer is going to be perfect for his recuperation, and i think i have a couple clients to breed him to this season. So Lucky will get Lucky, so i bet Hes gonna have some stuff to feel lucky about, too!



And lucky me! My little barn cat generously brought me half a rat this morning in case i needed something for breakfast, besides cereal...

For a long time, Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' was a big favorite. Listened to it so many times and gave it as a gift on several occasions. Since then, aside from Roger Waters turning into a huge jerk in his old age, I realize it was possibly one of the worst things to do to myself. I still hold it in high regard musically but it was a way to wallow in my depression instead of dealing with my problems.

In Kuwait, after the first Gulf war, with the paltry AFRTS movie run- we got a movie every six weeks.

I had just cleaned up the pool community room, filled with the detritus of war, and six months of people trapped on the compound, eating tuna fish and drinking pool water. We set up folding chairs, I found the popcorn machine and got it working, and everybody at the embassy filed in to watch a movie with popcorn and RC cola, because we didn't have coca cola yet.

I sat with my best friend at the embassy, and because I am a real wuss when it comes to scary movies, I spent most of the movie hiding behind his back.

Twenty four years and two kids later, I still hide behind his back when something scary comes on. It's a safe place.

477 My dog is obsessed with the two remaining baby chickens I still have at the house. The other 18 are at their permanent home at a friends house in the country. The two left are an Araucana who had issues with "pasty butt" and a Cream Legbar cockerel with a gimpy leg. It's improved but he still walk just a tad stiffly. I call them Pasty and Gimpy. I have been putting them outside in a small pen during the day and my dog just sits there and watches them. When they get distressed she whimpers, not sure if she wants to play with them or eat them. I'm technically not allowed to have chickens per my HOA. I keep them inside most of the time but I think they will go join their friends this weekend. They have been fun to have the last month.

Got to fly out of Winnipeg. There is a train, but it's a long trip (some 20 hours, if I recall). Apparently the place is packed during polar bear migration, but during March for the aurora, the Northern Studies Centre was lovely. Lovely fellow tourists.

I started thinking about it and decided I should clean up my eating habits. Nothing drastic. But I cut out the 'no value added' carbs, sweets and junk food. And in 45 days I dropped 14 lbs. Did nothing else different, just exercised some discipline. Anyway, thought I would pass that on.

My parents did that when they retired - spent a year traveling. They were all over the place, including teaching English to schoolchildren in Nepal, taking the course on how to teach English in South Africa, etc. They came home in early 2011 and man, are they ever happy they toured a lot of the Biblical sites before 9/11, etc.

I am glad your husband could be there. That makes a lot of difference.

When I was on pain killers I would make a breakfast smoothie of yogurt, jam and various applesauce or pears or such. If you can get whey powder that is nice too. The yogurt is for calcium and the fruit is to keep from getting bound up.
The more fruits you can eat the better off you are, the various laxatives are not as tasty and you need the calories anyways.

And ask your husband to get you a lot of dark chocolate.

It's also more easily adjustable, and damn, it is very convenient.

Once the grill gets nice and charred and nasty looking, it does taste closer to a charcoal grill. I have a natural gas grill hooked up to my gas at my house. It is nice to go hit a button and the grill is ready in 20 minutes. We use it a lot in the summer to keep the house cooler.

571 My grill hits about 600-650 in the summer with natural gas. That's as high are the built in thermometer goes. It's cheap though, my summer time gas bill is usually under $20. That's running two tankless hot water heaters, the dryer, the stove, and the grill ~4-5 times a week for a family of six.

You should try using a nice 60% charcoal, 40% firewood mix in a concrete box fed wind by bellows...

I have gotten said pit back home in Ohio to 650 degrees or so.

CBD I prefer my meat done well, as such it takes ~ 17 minutes give or take.

There is simply NOTHING like the aroma of well aged and marinaded meat being snap seared.

It would not have been a stretch to imagine that the Philistines had connection to the old Hittite areas. It can be shows that they were part of a much longer trade route, beyond Egypt, and they sat on the path of land travel between Egypt and Byblos, or Troy or Hattusha, or wherever.

I love the tankless water heaters. It was a substantial upgrade when we built this house but we have NEVER run out of hot water. Can have 2-3 showers going, dishwasher, & washer machine going all at the same time and not have to worry. Plus, you can fill the ginormous soaking tub, no problem.

Good point. A fact a lot of people don't know is that the Roman Empire's most prized wines came from England. It's been too cold to grow grapes there for all of modern history, and that's only just starting to change.

Two things: we went to youngest daughter's show last week. She does stage management for a local dinner/ late night theater. This was something we were not sure she would ever be able to do again after her auto accident, but she has done four shows for them in the last year. The current one is part of their 35th anniversary celebration, so quite an honor.
We are so very thankful for her recovery every day.

Same evening, we visited the hard-to-find video store. I love old movies, and have a real soft spot for silents. This place has a whole wall of them- things I'd never heard of.
I'm like "Why? WHY did you let me come in here?!?"
Pigged out on Murnau's 'Faust" and Lang's "Siegfried".
Hog heaven.

Lucky for my time and $$ budget, it's pretty far from home.

639 As much as I dislike having to go out and buy new shoes every few months, I still enjoy the feeling of having brand-new shoes afterwards.

I'm not sure if it's more from vanity (Hey, I'll be wearing some nice-looking shoes for at least a few weeks), or more from perhaps-misplaced optimism (Maybe this is the pair that'll finally last me for more than a few months). Both of those definitely factor into that feeling.

This time I went for some Timberland oxfords. They normally make well-regarded work boots, so maybe these will have some of that sort of durability. And these have a rough finish, so I won't have to feel self-conscious about never getting them shined. I've never gotten my shoes shined; they just don't last long enough for it to be worthwhile.

Oh, and it looks like really colorful socks are coming back into style, which I also like.

A lot of cidering apple varieties actually went extinct because of that, and some of the few we have now only exist because of accidental finds. One was found in a 1920's era seed pack in Paris, for instance.

Most of the cider we have now is just made from blends of various apples, often eating varieties. The ones that aren't pretty enough for the stores become cider.

Just make sure your supply line to the house from the main is large enough. We had one installed, but had issues with actually having "unlimited" hot water. After numerous attempts at correcting it with electronic board replacements it was finally discovered the supply line was too small. Replacing that line from the main wasn't cheep.

681 #643: I'm generally not a fan of cider; it's just too light and cloyingly sweet in flavor. I didn't know the apples they used to use for it had mostly gone extinct; maybe that's why.

There is one cider I've had that I do sort of like, though... Woodchuck Hopsation. It's made IPA-style, with lots of really bitter hops. It provides a really nice balance for all that sweetness, and you end up with something that actually tastes like a nice, tart green apple.

I don't like sweet cider either. Seattle Cider makes very dry cider, almost like brut champagne, as does a local cider company. The imported French ciders are very dry. Most mass market ciders are way too sweet for me. I've found much better stuff made by small producers.

I am late to this thread, but I had a very joyous memory this past Monday that I will share. It was 75°, and the apricot trees here are in full bloom - too early, as there is threat of hard frost next week. Nothing bothered my grandpa more than his blossomed apricot and peach trees trees freezing, and he would always get every tarp from the barn, and every extra sheet and blanket grandma would let him use to cover the trees up.

I got to spend a lot of my summer weekends at my grandparents'. Daytime was for working - I fed chickens, and gathered eggs, and helped grandma with gardening, or stringing and snapping beans so we could can them. But early evening, grandma made supper, and I got to hop on the Johnny popper with gramps and ride into town 7 miles away. I sat on the fender, and we always listened to the Royals. If KC wasn't on, we listened to country.
We went to the tavern. Grandpa got his pint of Jack. Sometimes, two of them. I always, always got an icy cold bottle of Nesbitt's cream soda. And we'd hop back on the tractor, each of us sipping our drink and listening to Denny Matthews and the great KC teams of the 70s and 80s.

Oh how I miss that man, and growing up when I did.

699 Honestly? Ponies. The absolute and utterly harmless escapism of brony fandom has been my "escape hatch" in the last year as things went further and further wrong here in the real world. The wonder of a world where the biggest questions are "how exactly do they handle everything without fingers?" and "how much must it suck to be an earth pony parent of infants, really - diapers!" is soothing.
