Ace of Spades Pet Thread [Misanthropic Humanitarian]

Z pet thread 1.jpg

Grab a treat, down and stay for the latest installment of the Ace of Spades Pet Thread.

Ever wonder how cat litter came about. Our own Hank Curmudgeon submitted this for us.

From the Society for Industrial Archeology Newsletter, Vol. 45, No. 1, 2016, Pg. 16:

“[The Hagley Museum & Library, Wilmington, Delaware] has also received a donation of papers from the Edward Lowe Foundation. Lowe (1920-1995) was a pioneer in the development of the cat box filler industry and inventor of clay-based Kitty Litter in 1947. Prior to Kitty Litter, most domestic cats went outdoors although some owners used ashes and sand in rudimentary litter boxes. The invention has been credited with enabling owners to keep more cats indoors. Today, cat litter is a billion-dollar a-year industry.—Hagley Collection & Research News (Oct. 25, 2015)

Hey, it's time to meet the gang

Our first Moron Pet is Conor T. Hrothgar. He's a very sweet, headstrong and intelligent French Bulldog. He's good for a few laughs a day, or so says Hrothgar.

z dog hrothgar.jpg

z cats wandering neuron stripes and misty.jpg
Wandering Neuron submitted this photo of Stripes & Misty. They are sibs. Looks like a challenge to get both of them set for the photo. Per Wandering the cats also play with the Chihuahua that lives with them.

We have a lurker by the name of Anthony B. His submission was of his dog Hank. Hank was dressed up for a Halloween Party. Anthony submitted several photos he stated this was his favorite of Hank.

z dog hank lurker anthony b.jpg

Moron McGyver submitted several photos. The managing editors selected this one to share with you. 4 well behaved doggehs looking forward to a well deserved T-R-E-A-T. Nice looking gang there Mc.

z mcgyvers dogs.jpg

Lynne J, who remains faceless, sent in these lap warmers. Meet Mao, Malli & Saffy. Who needs blankets when you have such warm blankets? Looks like she knows how to herd cats.

z cat Lynne J mao malli saffy.jpg

z unknown moron cat.jpg

Here's a photo of Chance. The cat seems amused with posing for the camera. We wish we could give credit to the 'ette who submitted this photo. However without a nic we couldn't.

Z Fats the Cat Jim K.gif

Jim K sent in this photo Fats The Cat. Fats is deceased but Jim said he was the best cat ever.

We appreciate the compliments and the photographs. The Horde has been wonderful about sending in photos. Just a gentle reminder we need your pet's name and your nic name. If you sent in a photo without this information could you resend with the requested information? We really need this so we can give your pet its deserved attention. We also ask you to be patient, we will get to all of the photos. Thanks again for stopping by. Thanks again, L, Elle & Misanthropic Humanitarian.

10 That's a picture of young Conor T. Hrothgar taken a year or so ago. You can probably guess what the T stands for in his middle name. A very sweet, headstrong, extremely smart tri-color French Bulldog that drives me crazy but makes me laugh at least once a day, if not more often! He didn't read the part in his pedigree about French Bulldogs being low energy dogs.

We are still competing for the position of Pack Leader!

Have you heard anything about how MisHum is doing after his surgery?

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at March 19, 2016 01:33 PM (w4NZ8)

13 The first "feel good story of the day" link applies to Doodles. GoldenDoodles in particular (since they're half or a third Golden Retriever like the article), but Doodles in general.

I've got a GoldenDoodle, and I can't go anywhere (doctor, tax guy, etc. without her and not see a severe case of separation anxiety when I get back.

Took her to the vet to get her spayed at age 1 and when I returned later that afternoon to pick her up she heard me talking to the receptionist and disrupted the entire recovery area bawling.

We need to die simultaneously -- not sure which one of us will be more heartbroken. She'll be 15 when I'm 81.

20 Heyyyy!

So I have a question - my mom's dog loves me but is scared of her.

I'm not entirely sure how that happened, but I think it involved chasing after him and yellling at him for peeing in the house.

So how does one go about undoing that sort of fear? If she walks towards him he runs away, and he pretty much refuses to eat treats from her.

26 What is a good natured small dog that doesn't require massive amounts of walking-aside from regular walks. We had a mutt-a mix of a terrier and something else (We never found out what the "'else") was from a shelter. He was a rescue pup We went in looking for a small dog. The young guy said, "This is small dog". He was small only because he was still a puppy!. He grew up to be sixty pounds and very energetic Unfortunately he had to be put to sleep. I don't think our cats would relatewell to a dog, but maybe someday. Our son loved the dog, but we need a different type and smaller this time.

I would start with treats, she needs to sit on the floor and feed the dog his or her favorite strong smelling treat. If he won't take it from her, I'd leave treat in a dish and sit as close as possible to the treat while the dog eats it.
Keep moving closer until the dog will take it from her.
I'd also talk softly while the dog eats.
It may take time to earn the trust back.

Just my two cents, but my wife researched dogs for quite a while before deciding that French Bulldogs were a good breed for us, especially since I could no longer run as I used to do with our high energy anxiety attack prone Viszla. Her analysis was spot on and I think they are a great breed for sociable dog companions.

Although Conor (#10 above) is still full of energy, in general they are calm, comical, loving, and smart dogs. The typical weight range is 15 to 25 pounds!

Posted by: CaliGirl at March 19, 2016 01:57 PM (egOGm)

38 Fenelon, we've always had cats and dogs and they do fine together. (dogs have always been big enough there was no chance of the cat(s) being too aggressive. Pugs seem like a nice calm small dog. Any of the traditional terriers, bred to kill rats is probably going to be higher energy and more risk to the cats and I think JRT's are near the top of the high energy scale so stay away from them.

Get a dog person parishioner to go with you to shelter. It is sad, because they are risking bad outcomes but some shelters are bad about passing whatever dog they have off as what you said you want --breed, size whatever.

48 Simple question (I hope): Has anyone tried using a decorative fountain indoors for kitteh (or dog) drinking purposes?

I know they would lack the filter of, say for example, a Drinkwell fountain, thereby needing more frequent cleaning, but is it safe?

I have three fountains currently set up, and frankly they are boring. Boring is better than unsafe though, so I'll live with boring if decorative is not a viable option.

Just an aside for future reference, when we had to put down our 20 year old cat, Harley (named for the purring sounds), we found a vet that came to the house and administered the appropriate injections. The cat passed peacefully in wife's lap and it was far far easier on the cat (or dog) than going to a scary clinical unknown vet office, and it was much easier on the both of us as well.

It's never easy but this was as stress free as it can get.

Life = Pain. Which is not to say all life is painful, quite the opposite. Life is about the joy, the satisfaction we get, including from our pets. We don't get it without pain though.

So we accept it. We don't wish it away, we don't lament a life without it. For a life without pain is not really living.

Don't know how common it is, but this was a holistic vet working through a normal vet service. I'm sure you'd have to research services in your area, but I'll never have it done in a vet's office again.

The contrast was remarkable as we had to put down a much beloved dog (due to cancer) a year earlier and used the vet office and it was very stressful!

66 Caturday and I'm missing it (garden duties).
Was a funny story I heard on the radio years ago. The male columnist was telling how his young daughter wanted a kitty. He told her if they got one the International Cat Syndicate would only secretly come steal it so it was pointless to get one. The next day he looked it up on the Web and not 1 search came up for it figuring he coined the term. Don't remember if the girl ever got her cat.

Posted by: Skip at March 19, 2016 02:21 PM (fizMZ)

67 Another story from the pet journal. When our smallest toy poodle, Liesel, was a few months old she got her first bath. Her brothers had gone first and weren't happy about the process but didn't squirm much. (They were, however, delighted to prance around the kitchen floor before we could towel them dry and shake themselves off. Poodle fur holds a LOT of water.)

Liesel weighed less than two pounds at this point and gravity was an option, not a law of physics. As Mrs. JTB lowered her into the dishpan bathtub, Liesel let out a yip of indignation, wiggled through my wife's hands and launched. Somehow, she clawed up my wife's apron, got to her shoulder and ended up perched, curled up on Mrs. JTB's head. I looked over to see my wife standing at the sink, not moving, as lukewarm sudsy water cascaded down all over her. The pup was not inclined to move from this vantage point. Once I got over a laughing fit, I plucked Liesel off her 'perch'. Almost twenty years later we still laugh about it.

My vet comes to me, unless surgery is needed. It's so much easier on the animals.
Search for a mobile vet services in your area. They do cost more for a home visit, but for me anyway it is worth it.
This reminds me, it's time for my cats to have their check up.
The mobile vets may be available where I live because of the large animals around here. Horses etc.

Whatever smells right, I guess. Or ripe.
I've seen him drink out of muddy puddles, a stray frisbee, etc.

Spastic Lab HATES bath time. This is a dog I have to rip out of the water no matter what the weather conditions are. She'll happily lay out in the rain or snow and loves swimming.

But perish forbid I should want to bathe her. She shows displeasure by glaring at me, then turning away and lying down with her back to me.

77 >>Strange how much a cat or dog or horse can do for you mental health

You can tell a lot about a person by the way they take care of animals, whether it be a dairy farmer, a small animal owner, etc.

78 Heh Chi, yup the doggies will splash through a mud puddle, and stir up the crud before they drink a bit and then decide to lay down and get the belly cooling if its a hot day. But they do like to have their water dishes cleaned of the slime.

I don't know that cats slobber much in their water dishes where a great filter would be as needed as long as the fountain was cleaned regularly. My cat does like to lick if a faucet is dripping but luckily he is no maine coon that has learned how to turn taps on.

80 I've been on crow patrol. We have Great horned owls by my road. The mom has been on the nest sine feb 13. I would imagine the eggs have hatched by now. There is a crow's nest 3 oak trees east. I caught the crows mobbing the dad owl yesterday.
I went and got the pellet gun, but I missed. The crows cut the drip tape in the fields.
I hope the crows don't find the owl nest. The owl nest is probably 50 feet up.

94 Poodle fur holds a LOT of water.

That's the reason they started clipping them.
The original German hunting poodles (pudel) were prone to drowning on a retrieve because of the issue.

I keep my Doodle (50/50 GoldenDoodle mother, red standard Poodle father) trimmed to 1/2" or so.

Phenomenal swimmer, best retriever I've ever owned.
She likes weather that's wet and below 40 degrees.

95 Afternoon all!

Thanks for sharing your furry baby photos. If an animal loves you, there is something redeeming about you.

Quent and Jessel, my heart goes out to you. Hugs through the interwebs.

Fenelon, would a cocker spaniel be an option? My husband got one for me for our wedding gift (because all of our milestones have been celebrated with dogs) and we loved her to pieces. Terriers and working breeds may not be the best choices if you want a slower animal.

I have to say, out of love for my Emerson, that Newfoundlands are surprisingly calm, easily handled dogs. He is the easiest dog I have ever walked-never pulls, never leaves my side, unless there is a baby or a pretty girl-and is calm and gentle with everyone. They don't require much beyond a gentle walk, and we have one that hates the water, so providing water sports for him is not an issue. He also "gets" issues-with my daughter's kidney issues, and my son's anxiety issues, he has been absolutely therapeutic for both of them. But hair is an issue. A large, fluffy issue.

Havanese are more hypoallergenic than many dogs, and are smallish and sweet as well. My physical therapist had one he brought to his office, who would sit with you when he was putting you through pain. It really helped.

Hope you find the right one. Prayers for that as well.

It's a problem when they figure it out. I would come home to both bathroom sinks, hot and cold water going full blast. Water everywhere. All over the mirrors, the floor. little wet footprints everywhere.

Love them both dearly, but I will be looking for a Frenchie when they go. Condolences to those that have loss pets, I loss two dogs in less than two years and I was so grief stricken I said never again, but I eventually caved and got my two Brat terriers. Daughter found an abandoned Great Pyrenees female with a GP puppy in a local park while out walking her own Poodle. Got the puppy placed and adopted the momma dog about eight years ago. About two years ago, momma dog broke a hind leg, so daughter carried the Great Pyrenees, a non-trivial task in itself, to the truck and thence to the vet. Vet said break was due to bone cancer so daughter had the leg amputated and brought momma dog home. She's still getting around on three legs and has beaten the one year life expectancy by a year now.

But it's such an adorable head, so you can't blame him. Male dog modeling is like kinda over by the time they are like 70 or so in dog years;-)

158 forbid I should want to bathe her. She shows displeasure by glaring at me, then turning away and lying down with her back to me.

My mama's last little dog, which was a Peki-pug, OVED taking a bath; she'd jump in the tub and bark and wail til someone come and gave her one.

But go outside in the rain? Not no way, not no how.

My theory was that she didn't like the way it felt falling on her.

159 I think what Burt means is, he wants a pretty fountain and would it be okay.

My own beloved kittehs are country critters, and find the nastiest things ever to drink out of, so I don't see why a decorative fountain would be a big deal.

Quint&Jessel, Sea of Azof, Bly, UK, I'm so sorry. It hurts something awful.

160 Yep. I realized that when I went back and read the original post again.

WeaselDog drinks out of the nasty bird bath in the back yard - disgusting.

161 Dang it, missed the pet thread again. Time zones are hard. Just in case anyone else shows up, my dog Sophie is very dog-reactive but we have been doing a thing called "Look At That" which involves one of us spotting a dog which causes me to launch into a litany of "Look at that, it's a puppy, yaaaay, Puppies!!!" This is all done in a low-key excited voice which is entirely audible to the other party. The neighbors have by and large learned to keep their distance, and if they mistake my recitation for friendliness, Sophie immediately disabuses them of such a notion. Anyway, we've been quite successful lately with keeping her calm. Yaaaaay, Sophie.

PS: Did you know that staring in dogs equals aggression. If your dog stares fixedly at something and is leaning the least little bit forward, try to distract him because he's not thinking anything good.

162 My kitties prefer to drink out of anything with lots of algae, which makes me wonder if they're onto something.

Is there still a backlog of pet pictures?

163 Late to the thread just got done with a seminar on LOSD with Andrew Branca. More later on the gun thread. Comment on "my" four "labs" furthest is Sadie then Zeke who might be part lab then Jo who is just a dog and Summer our cuddle English Setter. ThanX! For making their 15 minutes

164 The cutest and sweetest little juvenile terrier mix, female, showed up at our door today! I have princess kitty who would be very bothered by another animal living here. First, I petted her, then tried to ignore her, and ended up giving it a can of cat food that princess won't touch, and water. Now it's here, but in a probationary period. I really like it, but... I'm such a pushover.

167 "What's your dog been drinking and eating?"

A couple of years ago, when my grown up daughter was living with me I woke up in the morning hearing my Aussie smacking her lips and chewing loudly in her crate. She loves rooting around in the bathroom trash and I saw a string hanging out of her mouth.

I lost my cookies that morning.
