Saw a recent cereal ad (maybe Kelloggs?) where they talk about how kids can't learn on an empty stomach, and they have a program to provide breakfast to needy school children.
I think it's great that a private company is doing this, but I have to wonder *why* there are still so many hungry school children when we have food stamps, WIC (younger kids), and public schools serving breakfast (some of them doing this year-round), in addition to all of the private charities, such as local food banks.

The Patrick O'Brian sea novels deal with that. I grew up with working poor parents. Had good public school grades. Parlayed that into a degree at a cut rate college. Worked myself into Upper Middle Class comfort.
Why ? BECAUSE I DIDN'T LIKE BEING POOR. Remove that discomfort, and you remove all incentive to work out of that condition.

Yep. I figure that if a family has public schools providing 2-3 meals a day, and private charities doing things like sending food home w/the kids so they have something to eat on the weekends, then that frees up the EBT to spent on other things, like booze, or to be sold to generate cash for other things.

Ghost, I will not attack you but neither will I refrain from pointing out Trump's deficiencies.
Donald Trump is not a conservative of any sort. Full stop. I believe his own words out of his own mouth over those of Jeff Sessions and other people who have written his policy statements because he, and not they, would be president if he is elected.
Trump just last Thursday walked back "his" position on H1B visas and says that we need more not less foreign labor. That statement is backed by his own use of visa labor and his vehement support for his labor practices. Given that his words on Thursday match his actions, why would anyone choose to believe he holds a contrary policy position that he would follow through on?
The same applies to illegal immigration... and respect for the Constitution... and any instinct toward understanding and supporting free markets... and being pro-life... etc.

My parents grew up in that kind of poverty. They didn't even shoes! I grew up listening to "When I was your age . . ." constantly. When I was in high school, they took us on a vacation to see their first homes, and that was a moment that has always stayed with me. Neither of them went to college, but they put 4 kids through an excellent private university and managed to live the American Dream only through sheer force of will, determination, frugality, and hard work.

I have those memories also, but the lesson to learn from that experience is 'pay cash', do it yourself, and don't borrow money. Don't spend money you don't have, don't borrow against future income that may/may not happen, and don't spend all the money you have in hand. Once that money is spent, it's damn difficult to get more of it, made worse if you are trying to pay back debt.
Teach your kids that, and you have given them an advantage.

Not sure how far away the fire was, but it was widespread - the ridge west of us, just a couple of miles or less, was topped out widely with dancing flames like candles on a 100-year-old's birthday cake. That's what I had never seen before.
Thinking of driving out there today to see what it looks like. Apparently, it's died down overnight. But the sky to the West was lit up orange at Midnight.

It amazes me how little attention is paid to Cruz's wife. She is a Beltway regular, has worked in politics and then off to Goldman Sachs. But of course, I'm sure she's a true conservative too.
And, just to let you know, once they start bringing up Cruz's father, that will pretty much be the end of Cruz's surge. Oh - according to this report, the party in question has surged since Germany opened its doors to "refugees" last summer. Itself a key distortion, of course, as very few of the people are refugees, who of course have long been welcomed in Germany and other European countries.
One, the "voters' revolt" in Germany, if these results are representative, are a big "meh" and will change nothing. Not much surprise. Germany. Germans. Not famous for successful self-government.
Two. The report claims some "neo-Nazi" party has now had some successes. But how exactly does any party qualify for that label? Aren't all things Nazi still banned in Germany? Bander or HR around to offer some perspective on any of this?

Because none of them willingly made the choice to go to college. It was forced on them. They could have gone to vocational school in high school, or they could have gone to the local community college for a certificate or associates degree in a career that actually has jobs.
But no, his audience typically have gone to a four year expensive university to major in women's studies, or social work, or some other limited market and now are whining about the $100,000 they chose to spend.

Germany to me has always been about a linguistic identity. There's only been a Germany since 1871, and its borders have shifted all over the place. The Nazis tried to make it an ethnic identity, but it's Mitteleuropa, everyone has fucked everyone. I wish I had a better understanding of what's going on in Germany now. There was a big stink about six years ago when an author named Sarrazin said that multi-kulti wasn't working, that you can't assimilate people who don't want to assimilate, and that the experiment of taking in Turks which started with 1960s guest workers hadn't worked out.
At the time I remember that even Merkel stopped and took a second look. On the other hand, she's now in front of the bring them in and assimilate them movement.
Take away: What is Germany and what does it mean to be German is a question which has been suppressed and will become more important."

There are various categories of visa for students.
H is not one of them.

This is correct. I came to America on a student visa; after one is finished with their education, they are allowed to work for a year on an extension of their student visa before they have to apply for a H1B visa. This visa is also temporary, renewable every three years if I recall correctly. H1B visas are not for part time employment (those would probably be H2B visas). There are also special categories to the H1B visas for the exceptionally talented folks (usually in STEM but also arts and sciences) - these have a different name to them which I cannot recall right now.

My citizen kid (and those of my neighbors and friends) is just as important as the kid from somewhere else. I'm tired of impossible standards in job applications -- I myself have been looking for a few years and no, I do not speak Arabic, Urdu, Pashtun or Spanish..

Have you ever been on unemployment? I've done a lot of seasonal work and was pretty familiar with it. You have a waiting week where you get no benefits. So, if you take a two month job, you get to do another waiting week before you get benefits. Most people do not want to do that for a very short term job.
Haven't been on unemployment for some time, but seriously doubt it has changed. The area I was in did have short term jobs come up and they were hard to fill.

It's interesting. He won in Oklahoma because the Democratic party really is a fringe element there these days. All the anti-fracking people voted for Bernie. I like to see someone like him run, so that Democrats can be reminded of how corrupt their party is and how little say they have in who gets nominated and elected.
And it was fun watching Lindsay Graham reinterate his support for Cruz on Sunday. He didn't say how he squares that with talking about how unpopular Cruz is with the GOPe, just that Trump must be stopped at all costs.

We can deal with liberals and idiot politicians, but the real damage comes from people that the public perceives as being on the right who think the same way democrats do.
Most "right wing" writers in paid positions believe the majority of the republican base (in flyover country) are racist, uneducated and without compassion. They know that conservative ideas are better than liberal ones, but they are terminally embarrassed by the bulk of the voters that go republican.
The narrative will never change as long as these writers fill a position that the country sees as representing the views of the right.
These are the ones we need to purge first, because nothing will change until the general public realizes who the right is.

A possibly irrelevant bit of anecdotal data from a thousand years ago on the H1B thinggy. I worked on one of these, an application by a US company to get such a visa for a highly specialized/trained German to come to the US to help upgrade this food company's operations.
A highly skilled German - so, we're not talking "cost advantage". The specialty involved was legit, and one certainly historically associated with Europe, and Germany.
Yet it took the prolonged - prolonged - involvement of congressional offices (and senior members)to help shepherd this application through to an eventual approval. One guy. A totally - and obviously - legit application for a very specialized job.
I have no idea how the statutory basis for H1Bs has changed, if at all, in the intervening time. But on the surface, if there in fact has been no fundamental change in the entire definition of H1Bs, the massive and systematic replacement of Americans in technical/engineering fields with foreigners (the Disney/Florida example just being the most lurid and recent) is impossible to comprehend. Abuse, pure and simple. Of course in today's post-American America, where rule of law is a fading memory, literally anything is possible.
The only ray of hope is that so many candidateshave been pushing the legal/illegal immigration crisis to the fore in the political sphere for the past few years. Oh, wait .....

An H-1B holder is allowed to go to school part time or full time without an F-1 visa as long as he/she maintains a valid H-1B status. This means that while the H-1B employee is attending school, he/she must continue to work for his/her employer.

Can he win against Hillary Clinton? I think so. She's just not a good retail candidate, and that she's having trouble with Sanders...SANDERS...tells me there's a real window of opportunity here.

I think the reference to "close" is strictly the detainment facility at Gitmo. As I understand the lease agreement with Cuba requires both sides to agree on the status of the base before anything can happen with it.

So they can go to school but they must already have a degree in their field and they can't use the intent to go to school as a reason to get an H1b. It is a work visa.
Generally, students with the intent of being students are on F or other visas.
The permission to attend school thing is a fairly recent court decision which illustrates once again that our immigration system is broken.
Why would the exceptionally talented go to school ? They should be far too busy doing exceptionally talented things for their employer.

There's no denying Disney is saving a mint on his foreign replacement, but I'm wondering just what they're getting. If they're getting something just as good for 1/3 the price, well hell -- wouldn't I do that, too?
On the other hand, I find it hard to imagine that these replacement software engineers are anywhere near as good as the old hands.
Does anyone know what's really going on? Disney has always relied on cutting-edge technology and imagination. Are they getting it now?

Biddable brown coding machines who cost way less than their American counterparts.

People can't read or write English very well writing code that cannot be read and therefore cannot be supported by Americans. Zero initiative 99% of the time. The girl from India who sat in the cubicle behind mine for one sold year without doing any work because no one had time to handhold her through simple coding--i.e. break down the specs so she could understand them, help her access all the templates and libraries she would need, help her learn the expensive software required to use to code, etc. The KICKER: my boss was Indian and happened to speak her particular language--he just didn't have time to shepherd her. Second KICKER: once he became a supervisor, my boss only hired East Indians.

While in Atlanta there was a young Inidan man on our team, he was very sharp, etc. His wife was going to med school, Emory, I think. They were both from the Brahmin class and from well to do families. He was a fiend for making friends and contacts--he was very open about it. Once his wife graduated and she moved onto her residency, he was going to go back to India for a year and set up an outsourcing firm and he would no longer be a programmer. They planned to live in the States and get citizenship, but, with an outsourcing firm in India, then all their travel to India would be paid for by the company and tax deductible, etc.

McConnell, McCain, Reid, and Pelosi aren't about likeability; they've been around so long they're about incumbency or the character of the electorate.
Your example of Obama completely wins the argument against Cruz -- Obama is all about charisma, not character or substance. That he won TWICE is a testament to the power of these things.

I can see Rubes coming close to the 400 Delegate count if he stays in all the way. If between Rubes and Katsup they can keep both Trump and Cruz
away from the 1237 number, look for the deals making to begin.

I had a roommate who turned out to be bipolar and it was exhausting just living with her for a few months.
