I mean, if he had, he would necessarily have probably made some missteps along the way, as the sheer volume of statements he'd have to make in order to gain any cultural traction in the teeth of our traitor ruling class's opposition to his success would have put certain of his statements at odds with others, but I know I FUCKING KNOW That you would have given him the benefit of the doubt because you believe at bottom that he loves the country. rb I posit that Trump's media persona is his media persona.
And his policies are his policies. You can read about his policies on his website. https://www.donaldjtrump.com/positions Your choosing to disbelieve that he "really means it" reflects not on him, but on you. A necessary precondition for implementing conservative policies is for the electorate to mandate them. In order to do that they have to realize they want them. And they do! Trump made that happen. Cultural power IS political power. That's where I'm coming from. Can you please stop it with the attacks on Trump. I know there are trolls but that's not me and I ask that you not go in for the low blows either. We are now in a race between strict constitutionalist conservative Ted Cruz and populist conservative Donald Trump. I would never have dared to hope for a race with two acceptable outcomes like this. The pendulum is swinging back towards the right and you want to take pot shots at the guy most responsible for swinging it because you don't care for his language.
Posted by: Ghost of kari - certified inane at March 07, 2016 11:19 AM (xuouz) Ghost, I will not attack you but neither will I refrain from pointing out Trump's deficiencies. Donald Trump is not a conservative of any sort. Full stop. I believe his own words out of his own mouth over those of Jeff Sessions and other people who have written his policy statements because he, and not they, would be president if he is elected. Trump just last Thursday walked back "his" position on H1B visas and says that we need more not less foreign labor. That statement is backed by his own use of visa labor and his vehement support for his labor practices. Given that his words on Thursday match his actions, why would anyone choose to believe he holds a contrary policy position that he would follow through on? The same applies to illegal immigration... and respect for the Constitution... and any instinct toward understanding and supporting free markets... and being pro-life... etc. Posted by: redbanzai at March 07, 2016 11:43 AM (OrI3J) 206

Now if you want to talk about happenstance, a quirk of timing or such, that's one thing, but too often people who blame "bad luck" simply didn't recognize either (a) an opportunity they missed or (b) the serious downsides of a choice they made.

Wood burning stoves, out houses, and electricity.
I have those memories also, but the lesson to learn from that experience is 'pay cash', do it yourself, and don't borrow money. Don't spend money you don't have, don't borrow against future income that may/may not happen, and don't spend all the money you have in hand. Once that money is spent, it's damn difficult to get more of it, made worse if you are trying to pay back debt. Teach your kids that, and you have given them an advantage. Sorry for delay in replying, just got back from reading previous thread comments - not the best use of my time this a.m. Not sure how far away the fire was, but it was widespread - the ridge west of us, just a couple of miles or less, was topped out widely with dancing flames like candles on a 100-year-old's birthday cake. That's what I had never seen before. Thinking of driving out there today to see what it looks like. Apparently, it's died down overnight. But the sky to the West was lit up orange at Midnight. Pearl clutching and fainting over German local election results. The "hard right" party got 13% of the vote, more in some places. Most "shockingly" in "cosmopolitan" Frankfurt. Oh - according to this report, the party in question has surged since Germany opened its doors to "refugees" last summer. Itself a key distortion, of course, as very few of the people are refugees, who of course have long been welcomed in Germany and other European countries. One, the "voters' revolt" in Germany, if these results are representative, are a big "meh" and will change nothing. Not much surprise. Germany. Germans. Not famous for successful self-government. Two. The report claims some "neo-Nazi" party has now had some successes. But how exactly does any party qualify for that label? Aren't all things Nazi still banned in Germany? Bander or HR around to offer some perspective on any of this?
Posted by: rhomboid at March 07, 2016 11:55 AM (QDnY+) As it happens, a ginger midget asked me to look into this this morning. Here's what I told her: "Well, that was fun homework. There isn't a straight answer. Everyone calls the AfD "hard right", but I see them as more of a German Tea Party. They started a couple of years ago with the sole aim l of getting out of the Euro and now they're also skeptical of the immigration thing. My friend Jürgen is AfD, he's not a wack job. I wasn't familiar with the NPD. That's the group you were asking whether they're really neo-Nazis. They are definitely a nationalistic party. People on the web say mostly that they're not Nazis, but there are Nazis among their membership and supporters. They are facing a second constitutional trial for a banning on the party. The first one fell apart a couple of years ago when it turned out that a lot of their leadership was infiltrated by government and police agents. The current trial, argued last week, is aimed more at the merits and what constitutes a banworthy party. There have only been two bannings as anti-constitutional and they were in the 50s, when German democracy was barely on its feet and the Cold War was raging. They're arguing about whether the party has to be an actual threat politically -- the NPD is tiny -- and whether they have to make actual physical threats or whether their goals themselves are enough for a banning. The one clear thing I can tell about the NPD is that they think Germany should be run by and in the interest of ethnic Germans. Germany to me has always been about a linguistic identity. There's only been a Germany since 1871, and its borders have shifted all over the place. The Nazis tried to make it an ethnic identity, but it's Mitteleuropa, everyone has fucked everyone. I wish I had a better understanding of what's going on in Germany now. There was a big stink about six years ago when an author named Sarrazin said that multi-kulti wasn't working, that you can't assimilate people who don't want to assimilate, and that the experiment of taking in Turks which started with 1960s guest workers hadn't worked out. At the time I remember that even Merkel stopped and took a second look. On the other hand, she's now in front of the bring them in and assimilate them movement. Take away: What is Germany and what does it mean to be German is a question which has been suppressed and will become more important." Posted by: Bandersnatch at March 07, 2016 11:59 AM (1xUj/) 292

H1b visas are for temporary laborers with "exceptional skills or abilities". Work visa only . There are various categories of visa for students. H is not one of them. Posted by: Mortimer at March 07, 2016 12:18 PM (f2BJl) This is correct. I came to America on a student visa; after one is finished with their education, they are allowed to work for a year on an extension of their student visa before they have to apply for a H1B visa. This visa is also temporary, renewable every three years if I recall correctly. H1B visas are not for part time employment (those would probably be H2B visas). There are also special categories to the H1B visas for the exceptionally talented folks (usually in STEM but also arts and sciences) - these have a different name to them which I cannot recall right now. Have you ever been on unemployment? I've done a lot of seasonal work and was pretty familiar with it. You have a waiting week where you get no benefits. So, if you take a two month job, you get to do another waiting week before you get benefits. Most people do not want to do that for a very short term job. Haven't been on unemployment for some time, but seriously doubt it has changed. The area I was in did have short term jobs come up and they were hard to fill. Today's entry is unusual: "Almighty God freely bestows the good things in this world in proportion to a person's mental readiness to receive. An individual coming to the divine storehouse with a teaspoon, thinking 'lack,' will receive only a teaspoonful. Another more positive and believing person coming forward confidently with a gallon container will receive a gallon of life's blessings. Bernie isn't at issue here. It's what Bernie represents, which is essentially the normalization and mainstreaming of Marxist socialism into American political discourse. If I were advising new president Trump, I would tell him that to solve a problem you need to get to the core.
Along those lines, I would urge him to hang the vast majority of New York and DC republican writers from the lamp posts along the avenues in the capital. We can deal with liberals and idiot politicians, but the real damage comes from people that the public perceives as being on the right who think the same way democrats do. Most "right wing" writers in paid positions believe the majority of the republican base (in flyover country) are racist, uneducated and without compassion. They know that conservative ideas are better than liberal ones, but they are terminally embarrassed by the bulk of the voters that go republican. The narrative will never change as long as these writers fill a position that the country sees as representing the views of the right. These are the ones we need to purge first, because nothing will change until the general public realizes who the right is. Posted by: jwest at March 07, 2016 12:41 PM (Zs4uk) 405
A possibly irrelevant bit of anecdotal data from a thousand years ago on the H1B thinggy. I worked on one of these, an application by a US company to get such a visa for a highly specialized/trained German to come to the US to help upgrade this food company's operations. A highly skilled German - so, we're not talking "cost advantage". The specialty involved was legit, and one certainly historically associated with Europe, and Germany. Yet it took the prolonged - prolonged - involvement of congressional offices (and senior members)to help shepherd this application through to an eventual approval. One guy. A totally - and obviously - legit application for a very specialized job. I have no idea how the statutory basis for H1Bs has changed, if at all, in the intervening time. But on the surface, if there in fact has been no fundamental change in the entire definition of H1Bs, the massive and systematic replacement of Americans in technical/engineering fields with foreigners (the Disney/Florida example just being the most lurid and recent) is impossible to comprehend. Abuse, pure and simple. Of course in today's post-American America, where rule of law is a fading memory, literally anything is possible. The only ray of hope is that so many candidateshave been pushing the legal/illegal immigration crisis to the fore in the political sphere for the past few years. Oh, wait ..... Correct. I was not specific enough. They can attend school but - Likewise, the foreign worker must possess at least a bachelor's degree or its equivalent and state licensure, if required to practice in that field. So they can go to school but they must already have a degree in their field and they can't use the intent to go to school as a reason to get an H1b. It is a work visa. Generally, students with the intent of being students are on F or other visas. The permission to attend school thing is a fairly recent court decision which illustrates once again that our immigration system is broken. Why would the exceptionally talented go to school ? They should be far too busy doing exceptionally talented things for their employer. Posted by: Mortimer at March 07, 2016 12:56 PM (f2BJl) 455

About the Disney case of H1-B replacement.
I'd really like to know how that is working out for Disney. The way that guy described it, he was one star software engineer, along with other 20-year men in the company. When he got summoned for The News, he was actually expecting a bonus. There's no denying Disney is saving a mint on his foreign replacement, but I'm wondering just what they're getting. If they're getting something just as good for 1/3 the price, well hell -- wouldn't I do that, too? On the other hand, I find it hard to imagine that these replacement software engineers are anywhere near as good as the old hands. Does anyone know what's really going on? Disney has always relied on cutting-edge technology and imagination. Are they getting it now? Posted by: iforgot at March 07, 2016 12:59 PM (5o5ek) 466

Posted by: rhomboid at March 07, 2016 12:41 PM (QDnY+) Unless I am misremembering, we can lay the current H1B visa fackery at Teddy Kennedy's gouty feet. Most of the abysmal changes to our immigration laws were his handiwork. Having spent my decades in IT. I can tell you how employers view foreign IT workers on such visas: Biddable brown coding machines who cost way less than their American counterparts. ---- The reality: People can't read or write English very well writing code that cannot be read and therefore cannot be supported by Americans. Zero initiative 99% of the time. The girl from India who sat in the cubicle behind mine for one sold year without doing any work because no one had time to handhold her through simple coding--i.e. break down the specs so she could understand them, help her access all the templates and libraries she would need, help her learn the expensive software required to use to code, etc. The KICKER: my boss was Indian and happened to speak her particular language--he just didn't have time to shepherd her. Second KICKER: once he became a supervisor, my boss only hired East Indians. Posted by: Sherry McEvil, Stiletto Corsettes now franchising Lulu Snackbars at March 07, 2016 12:59 PM (kXoT0) 467

The Schumer-Rubio immigration bill was nothing more than a giveaway to the corporate patrons who run both parties... 1. A nation without borders is not a nation. There must be a wall across the southern border. 2. Laws passed in accordance with our Constitutional system of government must be enforced. 3. Any immigration plan must improve jobs, wages and security for all Americans." ======= "1. Tax relief for middle class Americans: In order to achieve the American dream, let people keep more money in their pockets and increase after-tax wages. 2. Simplify the tax code to reduce the headaches Americans face in preparing their taxes and let everyone keep more of their money." ===== "The best social program has always been a job." ===== What I've been trying to say is that Trump is our trojan horse, the same way Obama was the left's trojan horse. Obama laid out what he was going to do for anyone who cared to look, and Trump is doing the same thing. His media persona is his media persona. It exists to suck oxygen out of the room. You say "My theory is that Sessions was so desperate for something to be done about immigration, and it is indeed a desperate situation, that he was willing to take a risk with Trump." You may be right, we might never know, or Sessions might talk at some point. But that there would be desperation that something be done about illegal immigration is plausible, and instructive. LDC, thanks for keeping up with these things so the rest of us don't have to (the Williamson thing). He's a talented wordsmith but taking Rubio at all seriously pretty much beclowns him. Then again, the country wouldn't be where it is if there weren't significant numbers of people taking Rubio seriously as in any way fit for higher office. Reflects the general, and dramatic, decline. They were both from the Brahmin class and from well to do families. He was a fiend for making friends and contacts--he was very open about it. Once his wife graduated and she moved onto her residency, he was going to go back to India for a year and set up an outsourcing firm and he would no longer be a programmer.
