Trump Barely Edges Cruz in Kentucky in Louisiana; Comparison of LA Early Voting Vs. Today's Voting Shows Major Shift to Cruz; Wins Night, 64 Delegates to Trump's 49

64 delegates won by Cruz on the night, 49 for Trump.

With Louisville going narrowly for Trump, 30-28%, I guess Decision Desk decided there was no longer enough vote outstanding for Cruz to overcome Trump's slim 4-point lead statewide. So it looks like both KY and LA will go to Trump with fairly narrow margins (4 points).

Rubio is not even in the conversation, nor is Kasich.

It seems unlikely that Rubio or Kasich will drop out before their states vote in 10 days, but it does seem like anyone with a brain in their heads should realize that votes for either of these men are wasted votes, and effectively votes in favor of Trump.

Rubio and his diehards continue to babble that the "map really looks good for Rubio going forward." Apparently the map yet to come is completely different from the 22 states, scattered in all regions of the country except the far west, that have already voted.

But there's some hidden, secret Rubio Remnant hiding out there in states completely different from all of these: Texas, Maine, Oklahoma, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Vermont, South Carolina, Kentucky, Louisiana, Arkansas, Kansas, Iowa, Alaska...

What states could possibly be so different from these that Rubio is going to suddenly zoom up from his 8-14% level?

Cruz is lately averaging from the thirties to forties -- previously, a Trumpian level of domination.

No one except Cruz has posted such big tallies -- has anyone but Cruz and Trump broken the 30% level, anywhere?

Upon what possible basis, except for fantasy, can one postulate that Rubio is, as usual, just 'round the corner from breaking through?

There are now two tiers in this race -- Trump/Cruz, and in the second tier, Rubio/Kasich. His numbers at the Kasich level, sometimes below them.

The Big Mo:

Note that while Trump will win these two states, the margins will be small.

This may or may not happen:

The "Trump the Phenomenon" phase of the campaign is officially over. He's squeaking by Ted Cruz now -- either Trump's not a phenomenon, or Cruz is also one. You can't make a "Trump the Phenomenon" case on 4% margin of victory.

Rubio's Win is Cruz's Gain: Little doubt about it that it was Rubio's belittling of Trump that got into Trump's head and caused Trump to get really weird in the debate.

Can't lie; that's Rubio's doing. It's not just that he blew himself up in taking Trump down a peg. Just the way it works out sometimes.

15 Trump/Cruz went 2/2 but Trump's wins are bigger than Cruz's. I expected Cruz to take Kansas but not Maine. Thankfully the most important goal, the demise of Narco Rubio is on schedule because he's getting trashed everywhere. "From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe. Warsaw, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Bucharest and Sofia, all these famous cities and the populations around them lie in what I must call the Soviet sphere, and all are subject in one form or another, not only to Soviet influence but to a very high and, in many cases, increasing measure of control from Moscow."

however, the protesters inside the event, who interrupted it easily a dozen or more times, were VERY angry people, screaming profanities, calling people racist, tearing up their "trump" signs and throwing them at people...lots of rage. one protester threw fake punches at the people around him, apparently trying to spark a fight for the headlines that it would generate.

See, the way it works is that Ace gives us his opinions, in the form of sometimes hysterically funny posts, and we decide whether we like or dislike those opinions.

But there is no fairness or even-handedness inherent in his business plan. if Ace wants to support Zombie Joseph Stalin, then he will. We will make fun of him, but we have no right to demand that he changes his opinion based on your irrational and, quite frankly, idiotic assumption that this is intended to be a straight news blog.

not sure if this is a joke or i just don't understand the question. a number of people left early because his speech was pretty long and he was late in arriving, but the majority of people stayed for the entire speech. lots of applause for "build the wall" and "usa usa usa" and booing mentions of "little marco" and mitt romney.

interestingly, whenever he mentioned "lyin' ted" there wasn't much of a response from the crowd. so i think a lot of trump's supporters could support cruz in the general if he's the nominee. but they pretty much fucking hate marco.

If only to keep it very close and show that Cruz has momentum. People like to win. If Cruz looks he's got the juice, people may start to jump ship from Trump. Plus, every Trump speech is now becoming a clown show with people wearing dildos on hats, constant fights and screams of racist, Nazi, and so on. Not Trump's fault, other than the stupid dick comment, but if he becomes too polarizing, it may turn off the more moderates. Of course, his waffling can't help. The finding is the first accounting of the Democratic presidential front-runner's personal role in placing information now considered sensitive into insecure email during her State Department tenure. Clinton's authorship of dozens of emails now considered classified could complicate her efforts to argue that she never put government secrets at risk."

411 My thoughts on the Trump thing...
when my little was in Kindergarten, the teacher told the students, "you get what you get and you don't throw a fit."
The GOPe has been telling the base this for years. Now the base has finally said, "Fuck that, we will get what we want or we will hit the GOPe with a human wrecking ball".
They wanted to cram Jeb in our face, they failed.
They tried to shove Rubio up our asses, we said "Nope".
Now they are either going to have to give us the constitutionalist conservative we want (Cruz), or they get the human wrecking ball (Trump)they deserve.
Hey GOPe!! Your turn to get what you get, and don't throw a fit.

412 The deciding factor will be if closed primaries hurt Trump or not.

If they do then he won't make it because a lot of the next primaries are closed.

And now look at what he's revealed himself to be.

As others have said, there's still quite a long road to the nomination. Trump is not getting people to coalesce behind him yet. He's not breaking 50% yet and there is a great deal of resistance. He's blown the last two debates and the fallout from them is still settling in. Negative ads are getting churned out to educate voters about some of the unpleasant baggage he has.

Maybe he will win. He's certainly ahead. However, we need to have all the negative stuff about him fully brought out so GOP primary voters can make an informed decision. Trump doesn't like criticism. He needs to develop better answers to tough questions and work on keeping his cool.

I think Martin O'Malley stayed in the Dem primary hunt as long as he did hoping that an indictment would drop and his party would turn to him. Bernie Sanders may well be thinking the same thing. If she gets the nomination and then is forced out, I believe the DNC gets to pick the nominee. True, but the degree of the advantage has yet to be determined. Cruz won by a lot, Trump doesn't look like he's winning by as much at this point. The net effect may be mostly a wash. That's still a delegate advantage to Trump, but the headlines are going to be that he's not pulling away from Cruz.

We knew Romney was a turkey but we had hopes for Ryan for the future right?

I believe this is what will happen with Cruz. Looks too good to be true and on closer examination some things just don't add up well.

479 Trump is throwing it.

He's a gambler who got lucky and is now betting irrationally.

At his age and with his money (or the banks' money), he doesn't really want the hassle of committing to a job that he knows he's unfit for.

If he was serious about winning he would have held off on his pivot to the left until more purple state primaries came up.

Expect more kamikaze backsliding on immigration and more talk of socialized medicine.

Trump's an attention whore. He has no intention to put out.

His point being early voters, write ins etc went HEAVILY for Trump giving him a huge polling lead. Today, Cruz won the day. Basically, if early voters could re vote, Cruz would have won big.

510 Huge, huge, huge inflection point. Two big wins for Cruz (one dominant, and in Kansas +30 over the polls which had him -6, astounding), two more narrow wins for Trump.

Anyone still worried about Rule 40?

603 So Trump is pulling ahead in delegate count and votes, yet somehow Cruz is closing the gap.

Some interesting and brutal math goes along with primary races. When the delegate numbers are final for tonight, each man will need to win a certain percentage of the delegates left in order to get to 1237.

That percentage will tell you the size of the hill each candidate must climb to win.

Rubio has to win about 66% of the available delegates remaining for example.

653 Little doubt about it that it was Rubio's belittling of Trump that got into Trump's head and caused Trump to get really weird in the debate.

Can't lie; that's Rubio's doing. It's not just that he blew himself up in taking Trump down a peg. Just the way it works out sometimes.

Same as NJ Gov. Donuts' murder-suicide with Rubio in the earlier debate, Rubio took down Trump a few notches with little or no benefit for himself. But Trump has enough support even after Rubio's takedown to probably win the nomination.

Now it looks like Cruz has given up on stopping Trump, and is playing to come in second, so he will be the "next in line" to run against President Hillary in 2020.

No, the part where Cruz has given up on preventing Trump from arriving at the GOP convention locked in with a majority of the delegates. Cruz is actively trying to give Trump all of Florida's delegates, helping Trump win on the first ballot.

Cruz absolutely crushed Trump in KS, and we can expect the same in Idaho, Utah, Dakotas, Montana, etc. Those add up. CA was already going to Cruz in late January polling.

NH is starting to look like the aberration.
Posted by: TallDave at March 06, 2016 12:49 AM (74ZYB)

LOL. Maine was won by Ron Paul in 2012. Not a surprise Cruz did well there, as he appeals to Paul voters (no offense). Probably also why he finished third in NH, where Paul also did well.

Also, NH isn't an aberration, because Trump won MA & VT.

I will give you this though, if the Establishment were to throw their full weight behind Cruz, he could compete much better than Rubio, because Cruz has adopted some of the Sessions/Trump economic ideas.

But they won't. They want Rubio or a brokered Convention. They'll get neither.

One of the facts that Trumptards are immune to is that when asked about American soldiers saying they wouldn't obey illegal orders, Trump said soldiers would violate their military oaths just because Trump told them to. American soldiers swear an oath to defend the Constitution, which "trumps" any illegal order from the President.

From the debate transcript:
BAIER: General Michael Hayden, former CIA director, NSA director, and other experts have said that when you asked the U.S. military to carry out some of your campaign promises, specifically targeting terrorists' families, and also the use of interrogation methods more extreme than waterboarding, the military will refuse because they've been trained to turn down and refuse illegal orders.

So what would you do, as commander-in-chief, if the U.S. military refused to carry out those orders?

TRUMP: They won't refuse. They're not going to refuse me. Believe me.
...
BAIER: But targeting terrorists' families?

TRUMP: And -- and -- and -- I'm a leader. I'm a leader. I've always been a leader. I've never had any problem leading people. If I say do it, they're going to do it. That's what leadership is all about.
Too bad that's not what the citizenship law actually says, and none of the citizenship laws going back to the first friggin' Congress in 17-friggin'-90 have EVER said.

The current citizenship law says that you must have one parent who is an American citizen (check) and was a) physically present in the United States before the child's birth for a total period of at least five years (check) and b) at least two of those five years were after the U.S. citizen parent's fourteenth birthday (check).

None of that applies to some hypothetical line of descent where the U.S. citizen migrated to Jackoffistan in 1845 and none of them have ever lived here since.

As I said: you're making shit up. Either file a suit or STFU.

You first Horus - As a proud member of the Cruz School Constitutional Law, Horus, you know (Kruger Dunning 'know') that the terms of Constitution is defined by laws enacted under its authority.
You have also learned in the Cruz School Constitutional Law the question has never been adjudicated (by SCOTUS). Brilliant legal scholar and host of Legal Insurrection blog William Jacobson has written an article dating back to the Obama Birther kerfuffle an essay concurring that it is up to each individual voter to decide this question when casting their vote.

So why file suit? Aside from a few million $$$ sitting around, I believe Jacobson and will vote with my opinion when the time comes (just like those who say they will never vote for 'x'). Until then I will express my current opinion so long as the blog gods permit. This one issue is no more remarkable, controversial, or relevant than if Trump has baby hands.

BTW, do you always respond to everyone you disagree with "FU - Sue ME!"? That is a rhetorical question.

Saving the best for last, gensec, thank you for your concern. But, always the but, it is neither wanted nor appreciated.

The issue did come up, was seriously considered, jokingly, so that the kid COULD run for president some day, but we decided it wasn't worth the expense. But this was all before Obama... Yeah, we actually have a CRBA to record the birth of an American abroad and passport in a timely manner. And jumped through the hoops to see if the kid obtained citizenship just by virtue of being born there (kind of like we are used to in the good old USA). And neither of us became immigrants there nor citizens. AND the kid knows all this because we actually bothered to explain it (and had JAG services to assist).

Bluntly, given Cruz's family legacy of border hopping parents, I would be very surprised if the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree. (There are a whole host of ancient sayings on fruit trees)

Save the patronizing for service members unless you see a fresh faced one in the flesh that reminds you of your own 16 year old kid and you can tell them of your inglorious exploits when you were in the service.

TLR?Opinions are like assholes.

696 "There's a small chance Rubio can win Florida."

There is zero chance Rubio can win Florida. It wasn't true before tonight, and it's even less true now.

There will be no GOPe candidate this time around. Your options are Trump or Cruz. Choose.

Primarily because no one has ever been dullwitted enough to actually file such a suit.

You're sure you're right? File the suit. Otherwise, go away.

"BTW, do you always respond to everyone you disagree with "FU - Sue ME!"?"

It has nothing to do with me, idjit, so suing me wouldn't be very productive, would it?

You're claiming that a candidate for President of the United States is ineligible, and seem to think screeching that claim over and over again on a blog has some legal effect.

Hint: it doesn't.

699 If the child of an American is an American, then the child of the child of an American is also an American, as is the child of the child of the child of an American, and so on ad infinitum. Posted by: schizoid at March 06, 2016 02:12 AM (kVmSi)

American citizenship laws clearly distinguish between people naturally born a citizen and those who would need to be naturalized after birth to become a citizen. American law requires that an American citizen has resided some minimum number of years in the U.S. for their child to naturally acquire citizenship at birth.

schizoid's hallucinations above about infinite ancestral claims of citizenship are clearly illegal. BTW, I dislike Cruz, but I dislike birther idiots even more.

700 There is, IMO,only one reason both are staying in

that Trump and Cruz stiff each other so the Convention can be brokered.

I don't think that is happening.

Casich and Rubio will be in as long as the old guard funds them in hopes of a brokered convention. Rubio will eventually be tossed out like a used tissue. Cruz, they may stomach if they have to and at least he is intelligent. And they will control him too (the worst they can say was that he annoyed them by doing a filibuster when it was futile...). If Cruz pulls off the big one, at least he isn't in the senate keeping them at work late.

BUT, if it is brokered, Cruz won't be on the short list.
Honestly, I don't trust Cruz, but if he wants to put his 'conservative constitutional' imprint on government he should be working to see what he can do to ensure a seat on SCOTUS. He'd have a solid thirty years plus.

The reason that such a suit isn't being filed is because Trump knows he would a) lose and b) look like an idiot.

If you say so. IANAL, and I was just following the arguments of various anti-Trump pretend internet lawyers to their logical conclusion. I believe the anti-Cruz pretend lawyers would say that the laws you cite are irrelevant because any citizen by statute is naturalized and not natural-born.
Did you miss the part where I said I didn't have a problem with Cruz being president and I *did not* want Trump to file suit? While I'm willing to make an exception for Cruz, I'm uncomfortable with the idea of foreign-born presidents and I don't want our current crop of globalist judges to make a ruling that throws the doors wide open.

If Trump wins a majority of the delegates before the GOP convention, Cruz has absolutely no power "to force himself onto the Ticket or SCOTUS".

Cruz is trying to help Trump get that majority, by helping Trump win all of Florida's delegates. So obviously Cruz is not looking for bargaining power at the 2016 convention, Cruz is hoping to be "next in line" in 2020 to run against President Hillary.

Posted by: gensec at March 06, 2016 01:54 AM (O+6LQ)

***

I think if Cruz won a bunch of states, and then threatened not to endorse; and a Convention walk-out, Trump would consider that "power." Especially if all Ted wanted was the SCOTUS.

I think you underestimate Trump in the General, but I doubt Ted does. He knows Trump can win even if you don't. Just like he knows he'd never be picked at a brokered Convention. If I went with the percentages, I'd bet he's probably smarter than you.

As far as FL, Cruz has a better chance if winning it than Rubio. Probably has a higher approval rating there than Rubio (literally)

Are you aware Rubio's approval rating in FL is underwater? Yeah, it is.

PS- Rubio needs to drop the fuck out, boss. And his fan club needs to stop being a little bitch about it.

Posted by: trickamsterdam at March 06, 2016 02:57 AM (q06wz)

707 Cruz is campaigning to knock Rubio out of the race and help himself, I believe. Cruz wants to make this a one man race and beat Trump head to head. Not saying it will work or not, just saying what I think Cruz's motives are.

Posted by: Arson Wells at March 06, 2016 02:22 AM (UnJ7w)

OK, this is a rational argument for Cruz campaigning in Florida, even though Cruz is smart enough to know he has no chance of getting any Florida delegates. I disagree with the premise that Cruz might defeat Trump if he can reduce the race to mano a mano by helping Trump win Florida, but I concede that's arguable.

But to argue against the arguable, I don't think Cruz can deny Trump a majority of the delegates in a one on one. Most of Cruz' strongest base, religious right, decided Trump's red meat is more appealing. The remaining states have much fewer of those. Cruz and Trump compete for the same mad-as-hell-so-screw-it voters, and the remaining states have even fewer evangelicals for Cruz to appeal to on that identity politics.

Cruz helping Trump win all of Florida's delegates is a big chunk of what Trump needs to nail down the nomination, far outweighing any chance Cruz can defeat Trump one on one.

It wasn't sarcasm, it was a direct response to Horus in 683:

Now you're just making shit up. "Parent" and "any ancestor" are two
different things. .Entirely. There have been numerous laws that state
that the child of an American is an American. There has never been a law

"Parent" and "any ancestor" aren't that different, according to his interpretation of "numerous laws," and I was explaining why.

Posted by: schizoid at March 06, 2016 03:41 AM (6ZrLz)

714 @gensec

Signing off, but first I'll explain to you why Cruz has a better shot. Rubio's approval rating in FL is underwater, his platform is horrible (and horribly out of date- warmed -over Bushism), he has no momentum.

If Rubio drops out Cruz would have a chance in a closed primary. If they both stay in, neither has a chance, and obviously there's no reason for Cruz to drop out, having won five states, with momentum.

So the current polls are irrelevant because they don't reflect what would the changed dynamic of a two-man race w/ Cruz having momentum in a closed primary.

And there can't be a two-man race with Rubio/Trump because there's no reason for Cruz to drop out after today's result. But I also think Rubio would be weaker against Trump than Cruz would- just an opinion.

Rubio doesn't just need to drop out. He needs to drop out before FL.

But, really, at the end of the day, as a Trump supporter, I could give two fucks. I guess it's better for me if they both stay in, and divide the anti-T vote. Sure, fuck it.

Good night.

Last and I am out -

What is a 'natural born citizen'?
IANAL. But everybody says it so it must be true. It has never been adjudicated.

BUT, what has? Some dude in the same familial situation as Cruz, foreign born, mother US, father foreign, same law. Some dude didn't jump through a hoop.

SCOTUS said that law is a naturalization law. Some dude, you did not jump through that hoop, you lose, you are NOT NATURALIZED, you are NOT a citizen.

Same law.
Cruz jumped through hoop (or his parents did), is a citizen, claims he was not naturalized.

Meh, whatever, it is up to the voter to decide.
Or what, file a lawsuit and it is up to the best and brightest of 4/9 (less one) SCOTUS to decide something that is so clear to every internet attorney out there. Know what? When was the last time you swore an oath to SCOTUS?

Hillary can file. The family trust has the bucks and for them it would have a great return on the investment (graft). The question will be answered by a rational authority SCOTUS and overturn many precedents, citizen/voter be damned.

Trump would be served better served spending his money divesting.

721 Regardless of who you want to win this thing, it should be noted - the polls are way off.

If I liked Trump - I would be wary of using them to show inevitability...

Trump has severely underperformed in comparison to polling. Whether that's because he doesn't organize any type of ground game or not, I don't know. But it's a problem and a problem that is starting to cost him states.

722 "Regardless of who you want to win this thing, it should be noted - the polls are way off."

When they poll likely voters.

If they can keep the voters to card carrying republicans only Cruz will clean up quite nicely (generally, closed primaries and caucuses).

Problems with that -

1) Despite rumors to the contrary, it shows that Cruz is a party boy

2) That shiite don't work in the general

725 Rubio needs to stay in for the next debate and needle Trump until he falls on the floor foaming at the mouth. Then when the debate's over, Rubio needs to say, "I have a hangnail I need to take care of, so I will be dropping out. Goodnight, everybody."

Posted by: Abby Normal at March 06, 2016 11:29 AM (y0rni)

726 The anger and hatred of Washington DC Politicians is largely due to the fact that they all tell you what you want to hear (well honed by market research testing) to win the election and then they do something completely different once elected. Trump is just like another NY billionaire, Michael Bloomberg, who pretended to be Republican to win the nomination for mayor. But Bloomberg went back to being a Democrat the minute after winning the Republican nomination. Trump will do the same with the presidency. He pretty much already told us his positions are flexible so don't be surprised one bit if we have a choice between two Democrats for President in November.

Posted by: Fr at March 06, 2016 12:55 PM (1s9aG)

727 Rubio's plan isn't really to get the nomination at this point. He can't do it. So he'll try to stop Trump from getting it, same as Kasich. Then they can slice the pie at a convention and get some concessions. That's why he's trying this last stand at Florida. Trump needs to at least fail there (or maybe in Ohio, that one's more likely I think) for the delegate math to work out. Ohio and Florida are going to be very interesting to watch.
