244 You can't help but be amused at all they hysterical "Trump will be horrible!!!!" articles coming out.

Oh?

Now--NOW--you're worried about the unchecked power of the President?

Now you're worried about cronyism and socialism and all the other evils a tyrant will bring?

Now, after 24 or more years of unrestrained growth of government power, reach and control---NOW you want me to believe you fucking care?

No.

You're meal bowl is being threatened and you want me to fight for you to keep it and go back to the scraps you were content to throw from time to time.

Notice how all these fucking fuckers that are so bent out of shape over the prospect of a Trump Presidency are NOT doing one damned thing, NOT proposing one damned thing that will do away with and prevent the evils of a Trump Presidency---reducing the size, scope and reach of the federal government?

RIGHT FUCKING NOW the GOPe in Congress could introduce a half-dozen, a dozen bills or more that would make a Trump Presidency a footnote.

And they could sell it like hotcakes as no one could accuse them of racism for doing such.

But they are not, are they?

Because it's not the power of the Presidency that horrifies them--it's someone they don't like having that power.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, should be the most horrifying thing of all.

Rush's facebook page yesterday posted a survey that showed how much Fox' s viewership is off and the plummeting ratings it is experiencing from conservatives. His notation expressed shock.

Maybe he and other media types ought to realize that we understand exactly what has happened to Fox. Between the amnesty shills, the insistance on having establishment consultants for the RNC like Rove who not only are establishment, but have been wrong and served their candidates so badly, and the dumbing down of the personalities on it , it's becoming worthless.
I'm finding myself watching CNN more lately. Anderson Cooper interviewed Melania Trump yesterday and it was respectful, interesting, he asked her some direct questions as to whether she agrees with her husband on everything, etc. No gotcha questions, but he was candid with her and she was confident and direct in her answers. She doesn't agree with the Donald all the time, she tells him that, and he listens, but they both are independent and don't feel the need to be in lockstep.

I felt like the interview was an adult conversation, and CNN was treating it's audience in this case like they could at least read and write and make up their own minds.

I believe you be missing some of the point. I don't believe it's an ego tickling thing, I believe it's a recognition of reality thing.

I believe Oliver's bit feeds the context for the average LIV. It doesn't matter whether he's speaking the truth. What matters is the creation of a big viral lie that, in time, becomes received wisdom, and "truth". Remember, for example, Tina Fey's treatment of Sarah Palin.

When 47% of the electorate is never going to vote for you, this sort of thing can easily give you the 3% +1 you need to be carried over the line.

After the 2016 debacle, "outsiders" certainly won't get any traction. And I assume the GOP, like the Democrats before, will tighten up the nomination process (e.g., superdelegates) so that any "I love the uneducated" candidates won't be able to get traction. Not that I think the Trump/Palin wing will be taken seriously anymore, but sometimes they show up in different costumes. Anyways, what do you all think about our best 2020 prospects?

Agree. Fox is desperate to maintain a friendly, direct route into Congress. Trump was useful to them for a while when he was a NYC insider and could help them with getting the dirt on both political parties in NYC. But now that he is running on a anti anmensty platform, Ailes and Murdoch have no use for him, so they are pushing their establishment, illegal immigration candidates. And they need those consultants, and establishment favoring journalists to keep the pipeline open to Congress, so they are working overtime to produce as much junk as they can to try to push voters away from Trump and Cruz.

If Trump is the nominee I will ride this thing like a Bullet Train with a saddle.

Am I completely comfortable with that? Assured that everything he states will happen. Well, gee- no. When has that ever happened.

We've sat around the last 8 years and watched the country destroyed. Ruined by the way, by people who are exactly like the Democrats nominee.

But let's vote for the Democrat, or maybe sit on our hands at home, has become the beckoned cry of the forlorn, apparently jaundiced idealists Washington insiders and other grievance peddlers.

By the way, it's hilarious to see people who previously claimed the "Establishment" Illuminati were apostates, clench hands with them in an attempt to get what they personally believe, in their little part of the world, is the "RIGHT" thing. You know, really, "genuine".

I'm a little sick of the duplicity, fratricide and attempts to divide and conquer because of someones personal cause.

Meanwhile the country still suffers.

TOWARD BROKERED CONVENTIONS
Amidst the madness, a call for, yes, reason.

...Me personally, I am packing my tennis racquet and am on my way to foreign climes even as citizens in the swathe of Southern and Middle Western states simultaneously participate in the "super Tuesday" primaries. The party primary is an absurd institution. It may at one time have had a democratic intention, but as practiced in our time it perverts representative government because control over who can vote in it is not firmly regulated, as it ought to be, by the party organizations. These should also be able to say who may stand for a party's nomination, and the fact neither major party does, allowing flat-brains, mountebanks, and worse -- much worse -- to compete for public office endorsements tells you something deep -- how deep, I don't know -- about the arthritic conditions of the so-called party establishments.

I expect to read the results of this week's magnificent exercise in democratic politics in foreign languages, and my inclination is to think it will somehow seem less foreign than it would in American English, given the prevailing hysteria in our media, a hysteria which, of course, is both feeding and benefiting from the ruins of our party system.

However, and precisely due to the sensible observations of Miss Strassel and Mr. O'Sullivan, and because rather than despite the differences in their conclusions, I remain convinced that we shall see brokered conventions in both parties. Among other advantages, this would go some way toward restoring their credibility and their value to our society.

The argument for brokered conventions is that we have had a run of four failed presidencies. They all lived off the astonishing capital -- political, moral, economic -- accumulated in only eight years by Ronald Reagan, who, mind you, had to first clean up the mess of the failed presidencies that preceded his. Most American presidencies are failures; but our Republic is such, thanks to the blessings of Providence and the genius of the Founders, that it always has rebounded, rebuilt. No one in this season has demonstrated a capacity to rebuild, or even to frankly acknowledge the waste of the past quarter century. Dr. Ben Carson seems to be most aware of the rot, but he has, perhaps to his credit, shown little political savvy.

Cooper asked Melania about this last night. She said exactly what Trump said, that he had disavowed Duke's endorsement twice on Friday, and then was asked again. His earpiece didn't work well and he would not disavow the "groups" that the media left unidentified.
She told Cooper she didn't understand why the media kept asking Trump the same question about Duke when he had already disavowed Duke's endorsement at least twice on national media sites. She highlighted the fact that the media was trying to trap Trump on this question, and the media thinks people are too stupid to figure it out.

Wife: Maybe they'll grow up to be socialists.
Husband: This place doesn't grow socialists!

It may at one time have had a democratic intention, but as practiced
in our time it perverts representative government because control over
who can vote in it is not firmly regulated, as it ought to be, by the
party organizations

So the hoi polloi voting for nominees perverts representative government.

"The GOP is sufficiently self-actualized on the fact that Trump is simply a revolutionary movement within the Republican party as the serfs are fed-up with their do nothing public servants (no direction, no sense of purpose, betrayal at every turn).

The GOP establishment is distancing itself from Trump and the Republican leadership is hopeful that Koch money will buy Rubio to the top and change the storyline."

Not going to happen.

The country can then go into the general election on the premise that serious men, after thoughtful debate and civil discussion of all issues, will be in charge in January 2017.

367 Thanks to everyone who prayed for me yesterday with regards to my surgical biopsy. The wire setting was unpleasant, but, the doctor was very experienced and got things done very expeditiously. The surgery portion went very well. The surgeon told me that he got all of the small anomaly so even if the patholgy report is not good, I should not need a lumpectomy. I expect that report in 48-72 hours.

Thanks again.

Good.

I got news yesterday about someone in the family diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After her treatment, the doctor told her she was cancer free. The surgeon actually said she was "cured," not in remission. I have never heard of an oncologist saying you are "cured." I hope he's right.

We've come a long way with cancer treatment.

376 I've been amazed at the GOPe's vicious, snarling attacks against Trump.

The Megan McCardle piece in Bloomberg was a hoot. "Hundreds" of Rubio-Bush Republicans emailing McCardle to voice their utter disgust that Donald Trump breathes the same air as they do. (hashtag-NeverTrump)

Nothing mentioned about the 16,000 former Dems in Mass. who re-registered in time to vote in their state's primary.

I read both Federalist articles mentioned Ace's post last night. Ben Domenech was spot on. The GOPe will not, under any circumstances, support either Trump or Cruz. They'll go under with Rubio and/or Romney (in the General).

I'm sort of Trump agnostic at this point, but I agree.

He's being portrayed as this groundswell when the truth is people like John McCain and Mitt Romney were getting a higher percentage of support in the primary at this point. Nobody was portraying that as some sort of movement.

And Trump has the highest percentage of Republicans saying they don't want him as the nominee.

But Trump probably wins the primary, but it has far more to do with a crowded field and the other contenders (stupidly) ignoring Trump and going after 2nd and 3rd place than it does some revolution.

===================It's almost the mirror opposite of the 2012 primary season. Nearly every heavy hitter in the GOP primary candidate pool was to the right of Mitt "Etch-a-Sketch" Romney. Romney was hard-pressed to break 30% in the early primaries, yet he did well in the winner-take-all primary states. That means, of course, that 60%+ of the early primary votes didn't go to Romney.Trump is an outsider, but in a lot of ways he's compatible with the GOPe value system - he's likely pro-choice, he's a capitalist, he's a "let's make a deal" guy. Trump doesn't come across to me as a "from my cold, dead hands" 2A kind of fellow. But he's his own man. And that won't do for the GOPe.

It's not admiration of these people, I despise them also, but I don't think everyone that opposes Trump does it because of his stance on illegal immigration.

Cruz would have no problem uniting the GOP. He's not liked by the power brokers, but either was Reagan.

What many Republicans (both the good and bad ones) fear about Trump has nothing to do with him wanting to build a Wall, it's the CNN moment with Jake Tapper that scares the shit out of them.

There's not that fear with Ted Cruz or the other candidates.

442 That painting is not realism ... no self respecting cat leaves a tempting piece of fabric sit there without shredding it. Unless it was neatly draped over his perch, and he has just finished pulling it off.

And putting a nice vase on the chair so the cat can't jump on the bird cage, seems like bad planning.

466 As I suspected, the media has gone Full Godwin on Trump already -- wall-to-wall KKK and Nazi and Fascism comparisons and connections plastered all over the headlines today, all of it absurd and baseless needless to say.

I suspect that they had originally planned to roll out the Godwinization slowly over time, but they woke up this weekend realizing that it was now or never to stop Trump, so they uncorked every ridiculous "Gotcha" accusation all at once, in a last-ditch attempt to dent his performance on Super Tuesday.

I don't think it will change the outcome of today's elections, but the real problem is the future: Where can the media go from here? After you've launch an all-out Godwinization attack, there's no backing down, so it will only get worse and worse and more hysterical over the next eight months.

Nazi Nazi Nazi KKK KKK KKK fascist fascist fascist -- brace yourself, because that's all you're gonna hear about Trump (and by extension all conservatives) for the rest of the year.

I think my big fear is though that most people simply don't follow this stuff very closely, and when you have someone with almost 100% name recognition like Trump, it tends to distort support much higher until the moment people really take a closer look.

Happy Pig Day!

National Pig Day is an event held annually on March 1 in the United States to celebrate the pig. The holiday celebration was started in 1972 by sisters Ellen Stanley, a teacher in Lubbock, Texas, and Mary Lynne Rave of Beaufort, North Carolina. According to Rave the purpose of National Pig Day is 'to accord the pig its rightful, though generally unrecognized, place as one of man's most intellectual and domesticated animals'

I plead ignorance on the details. This is mind boggling.

Then there is rule 40-B.Please note that Rule 40 as it is currently written expires on the day before the convention when the Rules Committee meets to make up the new Rules of the Convention and for the Republican Party for the next 4 years. Rule 40-B currently requires a nominee to have "the majority of the permanently seated delegates from at least 8 states." Romney lawyer Ben Ginsberg was able to change Rule 40 from "plurality of the delegates from at least 5 states" to the current rule. The potential for skullduggery is clear. Even if Trump runs the tables in the primaries winning a plurality in virtually every state the rule can be tailored by a controlled Rules Committee to prevent a Trump nomination.

Rule 40-B used to require a majority in six states but when Congressman Ron Paul met that goal it was quickly changed to eight states. Under control of the insiders the number of states required can be amended to any number to block Trump.

This. After working in the nominating process in two different states I came to realize that all the important stuff is decided *long* beforehand and it is decided by I very closed group who have absolutely no intention of giving up that power. so disheartening

Surely the party pros know that a nomination wrenched from the hands of Donald Trump would be worthless but they don't care. The ruling elite that has dominated the party would rather have globalist Hillary Clinton than the uncontrollable nationalist Donald Trump. The idea of a president not beholden to the ruling elite is more than they can stand.

There are many great aphorisms in politics but this one may be the key to who ends up President: he who knows the rules, rules. Right now, it's Reince and the Racketeers who know them best. Beware Republicans: the big steal is coming.

Probably, but it's not really conservative voters that worry me. Most right-leaning people will support Trump. I know he has my support.

But never in my life have I see this much resistance for a nominee, and almost none of it is based on ideology.

Had someone like say a Ross Perot had gotten the GOP nomination and ran on that same platform as Trump, there wouldn't be near the vitriol.

A new superPAC has dumped $10 million dollars into blistering negative TV ads against Trump in the last three days. The Koch brothers and their associates deny funding the effort but they denials are questionable at best. The New York Times reported Sunday that the Rubio and Kasich campaigns are now openly planning on a "brokered convention" to stop Trump in the back rooms in Cleveland. The New York Daily News reported that Barbara Bush has vowed revenge against Trump for ending the "low energy" campaign of her son Jeb, the anointed one and that the Bush clan is all-in in the effort to stop Trump. 555 If the GOP tries to take it away from Trump, then you really are looking at a 50 state victory for Hillary and really the entire elected Congress could lose.

----------

Here is my thinking. If Trump does not win the majority of the delegates, why should he get the nomination? I think it is a fair point to ask why anyone of the remaining 3 should get the nomination. Now in a normal situation, you would broker a deal, maybe with the top 2 or 2 of the top 3 with the top getter getting the top ticket. But I don't see Cruz or Rubio (or their supporters) supporting such a plan.

So let's assume, we are at this point, and it is a brokered convetion (I know, I know, this is a political junkie's dream, but not possible - though in this year maybe it is).

Trump did not win the majority - there is clearly a majority against him. Trump did win a plurality - there is clearly a big plurality for him.

What do you do?

1. Just give it to Trump. That leaves a lot of people angry because they voted against him.

2. Give it to Rubio / Jeb / Mitt. Satisfies the donor class that just got trounced. Will cause a voter revolt. And for good reason.

3. Give it to Cruz who may be acceptable to most of the voters in both the Trump and Rubio camp, though who clearly is unacceptable to the GOP power brokers. Could Trump go along with this just to show that he holds the cards and to stick it to the GOP?

4. Broker it for someone else? Is there any other politician out there that could be remotely acceptable and would not be seen as the GOPe winning? Rick Perry?

In 1860, the Eastern Elites of the Republican Party figured that their man, William Seward, would be given a proper coronation in the Wigwam. The Lincoln men figured otherwise.

The Party bosses did everything they could to keep TR out of the White House during the time leading up to the 1900 election. They finally stuffed him into the VP slot. Too bad about McKinley.

Drumpf has no meaning in German to English. It has no meeting in German at all. According to my Wife and MIL who were both born in Germany.

What is possible is that the pronunciation of Drumpf is wrong.

Drumpf then becomes Trumpf.

The German word for Trump, as in Trump Card,
is Trumpf.

Trump versus Trumpf. No difference at all.

Even the important people in communist countries (other than the *real* Top Dogs) don't live any better than an average person here and if they had a truly serious medical problem they went to a Western country for help. Medical advancement requires a certain amount of infrastructure and once that's gone *nobody* will be getting the benefits. That is the truly ironic things about even those who are *right* about being on top of the pile "come the revolution". Eh, I think the '12 election was stolen, via traditional voter fraud, a heavy does of harassing the effectiveness out of a lot of conservative people/organization, plus the MSM obliterating negative coverage of Obama's 1st term (including Benghazi).

It takes a GOP candidate being able to get enough votes to beat the margin of fraud. For all we know, Obama's open borders/Lynch's illegal alien voter registration efforts, the GOP candidate - whoever it is - may already be beat.

699 Despite receiving some nasty allegations about defending the KKK from our banned compatriot, I'm agnostic on Trump.

I like his selection of people to piss off. That's a guilty pleasure, but I have to own up to it.

I also like the way he jerks the media around. They must be messing themselves.

Vis a vis the other candidates, I adopt a vector model. Cruz's vector points in a good direction, but the magnitude isn't very large. I get the impression that he's more of an intellectual than a politician, and that he'd therefore be stymied at every turn in DC. He doesn't seem to inspire/ cajole/ persuade others to follow him, and consequently I suspect that we'd end up temporizing, dribbling the ball in the back court, throughout his time in office.

Trump is exactly the opposite. God knows where his vector points, but its magnitude is huge. If he decided to fix some of our problems, I suspect he could do it (especially if he wins with a convincing mandate). Through a combination of mobilizing popular support against recalcitrant Congressmen, browbeating/ cajoling/ horsetrading etc. I think he could a lot - if he wanted to. Does he want to? Will he want to? Keine Ahnung. But he represents a chance, potentially. to fix some of our problems, and I don't see that in the other candidates.

710 Well, new old thread just posted.

Posted by: HH at March 01, 2016 01:40 PM (DrCtv)

711 stats and info

What's at stake?

In all, 595 Republican delegates- about 25 percent of the total number -- are available on Super Tuesday. Republicans need 1,237 delegates to win the party's nomination; Democrats need 2,383. There are 1,004 Democrat delegates available on March 1. The states involved in Super Tuesday also represent about 130 so-called Super Delegates, Democrats who are not pledged to support the winner from their states. The vast majority of Super Delegates have already pledged support for Clinton.

What states are voting?

Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont and Virginia will hold primaries for both parties. Alaska will hold its Republican caucus while American Samoa will caucus for Democrats. Colorado will caucus for both parties though only the Democrats are choosing a candidate. Republicans in Colorado have opted to select delegates only and then let those delegates choose which candidate to support at the national convention.
...

Alabama awards its delegates proportionally. Republican candidates will be competing for 50 delegates in the state.
...

The big prize on Super Tuesday is Texas, which has 155...

There are still large primaries ahead, including Florida, Illinois, North Carolina and Missouri on March 15 and New York in April 19. The final multi-state primary day isn't until June 7, when California, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota, as well as North Dakota Democrats, will vote.

717 We were talking about Jimmy Stewart the other day. It seems he owned a beautifully restored P-51

Here's the rest of the story . . .

718 694 The Jug with the Curtiss "paddle blade" propeller was a reliable, power-diving killer. Those eight .50s beat up anything in the sky.

That said, the P-38 is my favorite aircraft of WWII.

During the war there was a prototype built of the P-29 Bat. Blended wing and engine nacalles, it's by far the prettiest aircraft during that time even though it never saw a day of combat or never went into production.

I know this is where I'll be tonight instead of the TV. The HQ provides much better commentary than the bloviators on the networks.

You're suggesting that the Navy would not scramble ships and conduct an extensive search/salvage for us if our private plane went down at sea? Or, provide a Destroyer to later for the sole purpose of simply scattering the ashes?

723 There is a new post up. A trick. If you comment on olde posts you are banned. Happened to me a few years ago. ha.

Either that or I am time-traveling back a day, with Hilz virus, as have read before.

I need halp. Hilz virus now has weepy side effects. Damn refugee virus body has never seen.

727 You know who can't win? The Candidate that does not run and the person that does not vote
Posted by: Nevergiveup at March 01, 2016 01:33 PM (mw8Dm)

The person who does not vote can win if he structures his life to be independent of the American political system.

That is actually the best way to live - make it so that your happiness and wellbeing is not dependent on the political winds.

This does not mean you are unaffected by votes and different candidates - merely that you do not need the "good outcome" of a vote.

729 Thank you, ThunderB. Husband just left for shopping and I will have him fix me something. He rarely sees me this way and looked rather freaked out at the sight of his weepy, wimpy wife in bed, clutching her laptop and talking to morons. The bags under my eyes would rival Hillary's (which, I guess, is also part of the 3am coughing and bitchy Hilz virus). ack

Thank you. Hope Ace posts a Hilz thread or something where I can mock soonish. This serious Super Tuesday stuff is not helping.

I am still of the mindset of I Don't Give a Sheet Party.

733 " Anything that separates people from a lifetime of pulling the Dem lever is a good thing. Kind of like Scott Brown writ large, gotta break that habit. "

As it occurred to you that Dems might be crossing over to vote Trump now because they think he'll be easier for Hill to beat in November?

735 All you assholes who are saying "...and if the GoPE had shown any sense..."

In about five years, I'm going to be telling you "...and if YOU had shown any sense, we'd have had President Trump, and _maybe_, MAYBE, still the United States of America."

So go ahead and tell me your fucking Mitt Romney Style Shit Sandwich is gonna be better and different this time. Yuge, Luxurious, and Classy, right?

I can wait.

736 is petunia here? who is advocating for Romney?

Petunia is not representative, FWIW

737 ThunderB...no, it is back of throat raspy with rare cough...yet diagnosed with bronchitis. Weirdest thing I have ever had, and I know my snot diseases and try to avoid at all cost. No fever, seriously, just 3am coughing, raspy throat, and fatigue. Oh, and super bitchy (which is why I named it the Hilz Virus, that and the 3am wake up hacking).

Last time I was sick I was in Scotland and coughed and snorted my way across several countries. Even with that I did not feel this wimpy. I hate wimpy. I hate tears. Dammit. Soonish I should hate myself so much I will get better on own. Or not.

Posted by: ChristyBlinky, aging supermodel Redneck Queen at March 01, 2016 01:56 PM (wAMRL)

738 Not a problem CB. Sick sucks.

739 Trump will run third party if that happens, and the result will be exactly the same as it was in '92 when Perot stayed in - we got a Clinton in the WH.

Posted by: Donna and V. (no ampsersands at the present time) at March 01, 2016 01:07 PM (u0lmX)

If Trump runs third party, he should convince Bernie Sanders to run fourth party on the left, and even finance him.

740 @738...Irony, thanks. Yep. I am normally a pretty healthy Redneck Queen and tough as nails.

The other thing that made me laugh, on another site, was a cartoon of the "Clinton Memorial" on the Mall...showing ole Peyronie's getting a bj and a mother hiding her child's eyes. Ha. Loved it.

742 I guess i was trying to comment on yesterday's thread. Oops!

I voted.

Voted my conscience. Usually that means they lose. I almost voted Paul just to try to break the streak! Jk.

I guess we'll see eh?

Keep telling myself the most highs rule in the kingdoms of men. Sure hope they know what they're doing!

Posted by: Sugar Plum Fairy #176-671 at March 01, 2016 02:05 PM (hnCis)

743 What I mean is, Trump is yet another anticonservative shit sandwich the same way Romney was in 2012. They even feel the same way about Zerobamacare.

Posted by: Thing From Snowy Mountain at March 01, 2016 02:07 PM (kCfMX)

744 But, hey, whatever, everyone's been told you're getting back at the GoPe by fucking me like this... kinda like all the black people who thought they were voting against Boss Hawg by voting for Obama.

Same deal.

Posted by: Thing From Snowy Mountain at March 01, 2016 02:09 PM (kCfMX)

745 As I come in and out of weeping, for no good reason, I will stay on this thread and not go up to crazy-pants cage fighting thread.

This is what I figure: I have voted with a passion, last two elections, to defeat that damn facial mole. I lost. I voted reluctantly for stupid McCain, because of Palin. I voted Romney/Ryan because, I guess, stoopid.

So this brings me to my I Don't Give a Sheet Party, and as chairwoman, I really don't give a sheet (I looked for the chamber pot in above painting and saw a pot with a bottle in it. The cat looks rather disgusted, which is how I feel now).

It is gonna be what it is gonna be. All you morons voting today, thanks. It is important. I will give it my best if I live to see November and am not mummified like that guy on the boat by then (which would have been perfect if he were clutching a rum bottle). I sort of look mummified already. Thank you, refugees! I am certain this is not an American virus.

747 Ms. Blinky ... I'm with the Don't Give A Sheet Party, for more ominous reasons.

I really don't think it matters who wins in 2016. I really don't.

Get better.
