Cruz Targets Trump on Previous Support of Gun Bans -- And Marco Rubio Too

As regards Trump, it's pretty easy to find his previous support (when he wasn't running for president and didn't have to claim things like that he's super into the Bible) for gun control.

Just a rich buffet of gun-grabbiness.

Dems and Reps are both wrong on guns

It’s often argued that the American murder rate is high because guns are more available here than in other countries. Democrats want to confiscate all guns, which is a dumb idea because only the law-abiding citizens would turn in their guns and the bad guys would be the only ones left armed. The Republicans walk the NRA line and refuse even limited restrictions.
Source: The America We Deserve, by Donald Trump, p.102 , Jul 2, 2000

For assault weapon ban, waiting period, & background check

I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun. With today’s Internet technology we should be able to tell within 72-hours if a potential gun owner has a record.
Source: The America We Deserve, by Donald Trump, p.102 , Jul 2, 2000

Of course he supported the very reasonable ban on assault weapons. Because that's what people without any sort of conservative ideology do -- they adopt the easy, path-of-least-resistance claims of the left.

But as for Marco Rubio -- this is a new one on me.

But Cruz is putting Rubio's bona fides into question.

"I will not compromise your Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms," the U.S. senator from Texas told supporters. "You know, it's worth noting my two leading competitors have both previously supported banning firearms. Donald Trump supported Bill Clinton's nationwide ban on many of the most popular firearms in America, and Marco Rubio, when he was on the city council in West Miami, voted to ban firearms in public parks. Let me tell you this: There is no universe in which I would ever support banning guns because I believe in the Second Amendment."

Cruz's criticism of Rubio centers on a resolution from 1999 that urged the Florida Legislature "to prohibit firearms in county or municipal parks, recreational facilities, or playgrounds, which are locations where children frequently congregate." With Rubio present, the West Miami City Commission unanimously approved the resolution, according to minutes from its March 3, 1999, meeting.

Maybe not the worst sort of gun-grabby position, but I'm interested to hear Rubio either defend this or explain how he "evolved."

A former NRA president says Rubio was no friend to gun rights, and while he publicly talked up a pro-gun-rights bill to permit guns in motor vehicles, behind the scenes he was working to subvert it.

According to Politico, Hammer described Rubio as a man who talked pro-gun when the cameras were rolling but worked in ways that hurt the bill's chances of passage behind the scenes. Hammer said, "He has not been a friend to gun owners. He tried to cover himself by voting for it after doing everything he could to work against it. He plays to an audience. We will make sure our members know."

The "Preservation and Protection of the Right to Keep and Bear Arms in Motor Vehicles Act" passed the legislature in 2008--during Rubio's tenure as Florida House Speaker--and was signed into law by Governor Charlie Crist. Rubio voted for the measure, yet just over a year after it was signed, Hammer reflected on the effort it took to get the bill passed and said, "[Rubio] was a big disappointment to us when he was the speaker. He talked the talk, but he didn’t walk the walk,"according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Usually the politicians keep the dirt hidden. Cruz digs them all up and broadcasts them. Good for him. It is because Rubio and Trump have barely anything to say about Cruz's conservative bonafides.

11 The "high rate" of gun crime (whatever that is) is notable for the countries that are NOT included on the list. Countries like Russia, China, most of South America, most of Central America, Pakistan, Nigeria and about 70 other countries. Over half of the world's population is not included in these.

Wonder why that's never mentioned?

Going further, Rubio cited an un-named friend of his who, Rubio claims, had been pulled over by the cops "in the last eighteen months eight to nine different times. Never got a ticket for being stopped -- just stopped."

A "friend", huh? Why isn't that "friend" coming forward to the media with this amazing story? The media, who could then query the police agencies in question? This is starting to smell a lot like Cory Booker and his invisible, imaginary street "friend" T-Bone.

88 When Cruz supporters finally wake up to the fact that he has no path to the nomination, could you at least consider convincing him to cozy up to and endorse Trump in exchange for a nomination to the Supreme Court?

That is his true calling, he would be infinitely more effective there than in the Senate, or as a primary delegate and money-suck, and it would avoid the "natural born citizen" issue that you have to know the media would play to the nines to sow FUD with the electorate.

Thanks in advance.

The Assault Weapons ban sounded okay to a lot of people who didn't know guns very well (or at all) because it sounds like banning 50 caliber machineguns from the Wal*Mart sport department.

But learning more? How has either one changed? My guess is that Rubio, based on the NRA statements and his past antics with the public vs his personal wishes, hasn't changed much. I dunno about Trump. Guns seems like an area he might not be too leftist about.

That's the way friends talk to one another. It is no fun when someone says I will not listen.... and it's no fun to read, what about this? What about this? Well, what about THIS? But, it's part of a healthy debate and as long as you'll have me, I'll keep reading and commenting.

244 Rubio has a voting record that effected very real people. Trump does not.

His voting record doesn't demonstrate any animosity toward the 2nd amendment from what I've seen. But if the NRA report is accurate, he is no friend of gun rights.

Trump? I dunno. Maybe he's changed his mind, its hard to say. He's talked a lot, probably something more recent will be dredged out.

Either way, if he wins the nomination, all the gun grabber quotes in the world about Trump won't make Hillary or Sanders look any more attractive to voters.

You misunderstand (anyone who has researched it knows TPP hasn't been presented yet). Cruz was for TPA and voted for it, before he was against it, on an unrelated consideration (he cites Ex-Im). That vote flipped the scipt on the 2/3 majority requirement to affirm Treaties. GOA notes the risks inherent in such a wide open subject matter Treaty. I don't remember if the TPP vote will be 51 or less.

Cruz dropped the ball on TPA. His vote on the Iran deal is even more inexplicable, given that the 98-1 vote didn't need his vote. (He was not the lone dissenter.)

Eric and Don Jr went to Africa on a legal, permit issued, $$$ hunt several years ago and somehow a photo of Don Jr. holding an elephant tail cut off of his successful hunt went viral on the internet. He did not post it.
It is making the rounds again with the Bernie bots and the Hillary shrills/SJW's. No context, just what evil bastards these are and Trump because he fathered them.

In reality, the elephant was killed in an area that the Zimbabwe government and it's natural resources department had determined needed culled due to overpopulation and they sold hunting permits for major bucks. The cut off tail was presented to the local population whose hunting tradition has them making bracelets out of elephant tails. The meat was also given to the village, which was being terrorized by the over population of bull elephants, and the surrounding forest was being stripped of vegetation.

Of course, all this is lost on the LIV.

282 I think I've heard Trump mention the certifiably crazy should not get guns. They commit mass murders ... but the left seems OK with that since for one, they like to use the mass killings for total takeaway of guns. And two ... civil rights, equal rights for crazies, something like that.

That could open the door to calling any tea partiers or veteran a crazy I guess, as Janet Reno or others are wont to do. But those under psychiatric care probably need to have their doctor allowed to report without fear of reprisal.

Trump got confused on "assault weapon" in 2000, when we were still safe. But he had the right idea then ... only law abiding would turn in guns, so no.

292 I would say 1) Pro-Life. 2) Religious Liberty / Freedom of Conscience. 3) Gun rights.
---

Seems to me your best choices are Cruz or Rubio.

Carson's past statements suggests he's weak/naive on guns and Kasich voted for the assault rifle ban while he was in Congress. Trump was funding the same Progressive Democrats who oppose you on all the other three issues.

Cruz successfully argued for gun rights in Heller before the SCOTUS. He also successfully defended the constitutionality of the Ten Commandments monument on the Texas State Capitol grounds.

Cruz and Rubio seem to be pretty much the same on life issues, except they differ on tactics, falling on different sides in regards to how best to defund Planned Parenthood.

Also, for MTF who cares about Federalism I'd say this: Rick Perry, who was probably the strongest on the 10th Amendment this election cycle, put aside their differences and endorsed Cruz. I think that's significant. Also, Cruz argued (and won) a SCOTUS defending Texas' right to punish Medellin, the scumbag convicted of murdering two girls. This was the case where the UN's judicial body tried to step in after he was convicted. Summary here: http://ace.mu.nu/archives/361385.php

For all his flaws and question marks on issues, I do think Trump is pretty solid on 2A only bc of the influence of his sons. Judge Sides With Apple in Drug Case Involving Locked Phone

A federal magistrate judge in New York sided Monday with Apple against the Justice Department, in a legal fight over whether the company can be forced to help investigators extract data from a locked phone--a ruling that could affect a similar, much-watched case over a terrorist's phone in California.

The ruling, which could shape the broader battle over privacy, security and technology now being waged between Washington and Silicon Valley, comes a day before the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Apple's top lawyer are due to testify before Congress.

TPP HAS NOT BEEN VOTED ON

No but it was voted to fast track TTP

Fast-track, or trade promotion authority, will allow the White House to send trade deals to Congress for up-or-down votes. The Senate will not be able to filibuster them, and lawmakers will not have the power to amend them.

And THAT is a significant Vote, almost tandemount to passing it

And there is no reason to be condescending to people who who need clarification on that.

Posted by: Nevergiveup at February 29, 2016 05:48 PM (mw8Dm)

That's his stock in trade.

The other worrying thing is that there is virtually no limitation on subject matter of TPP; only something to the effect that it effect or implicate trade. It if is any limit like the commerce power, it is no limit whatsoever, except when it is a tax, I guess.
