Yes, Trump Has Flip-Flopped on Deportations, H1Bs

In the below thread, a commenter claims that Cruz has "flip-flopped" on H1B visas.

That's true. I can't deny it because I don't like lying. Cruz has previously supported more H1B visas; now he's calling for a mortatorium on them, until the labor market tightens and wages increase.

And what about Trump?

People like quoting the Sessions Immigration Plan that's posted on Trump's website, and citing it as if that's Trump's position.

In fact, Trump seems to not have read it -- because in the debates soon following after he posted Sessions' immigration plan on his website, he began talking up how we had to get the "best people" from around the world to work here. That is, we had to give out more H1Bs to high skilled foreign workers.

Don't believe me? How about believing consummate border hawk Mark Krikorian?

This was after the CNBC debate. In that debate, Rubio dissembled (what a shock) on what his actual policy on H1-B tech visas was. Being Jeff Zuckerberg's personal senator, Rubio claimed he was going to be tough on them. In fact, Rubio supports greatly expanding the program.

As usual, Rubio told Republican audiences he was totally gung-ho for enforcement while not sharing with them that he actually supported expanding immigration, green cards, and H1-Bs.

Trump was then asked about this -- and instead of attacking Rubio for his dissembling, he agreed with Rubio that we needed to have more "great people" from around the world working here.

TRUMP ♥ ZUCKERBERG

Rubio's vulnerability on immigration would have been more obvious to viewers if Trump had not, in effect, renounced his own critique of the issue and embraced Rubio's position. Becky Quick offered Trump an ideal opportunity to follow Rubio with his critique of the H-1B program. After all, Trump's own immigration platform calls for the very reforms to H-1B that Rubio falsely claimed he supported.

But exposing Rubio's falsehoods would have required Trump to have actually read his own policy on immigration. He has not. Further proof that he hasn't done so came when Becky Quick asked him about the line in his policy paper that attacks the I-Squared bill by referring to Rubio as "Mark Zuckerberg’s personal senator." Trump's response was "I never said that" and "I have [said] nothing at all critical of him," meaning Zuckerberg. Only later did Quick mention that the criticism appeared on Trump’s own website, though Quick oddly apologized for bringing it up.

Instead, Trump embraced Zuckerberg and echoed the tech billionaire's call to let all foreign STEM graduates stay in the U.S. He went further, essentially renouncing the entire pro-worker portion of his immigration program:

I'm in favor of people coming into this country legally. And you know what? They can have it anyway you want. You can call it visas, you can call it work permits, you can call it anything you want. . . . As far as Mark is concerned, as far as the visas are concerned, if we need people, they have -- it's fine. They have to come into this country legally. We have a country of borders. We have a country of laws. We have to obey the laws. It's fine if they come in, but they have to come in legally.

Thus does Trump embrace the "legal good/illegal bad" perspective on immigration, wherein huge, even unlimited admissions of foreign workers are okay, so long as they’re given a piece of paper on the way in.

This is consistent with leaked excerpts from Trump’s upcoming book, in which he is said to write: "I don't want to stop legal immigration to this country. In fact, I would like to reform and increase immigration in some important ways."

Contrast this with his immigration platform: "Before any new green cards are issued to foreign workers abroad, there will be a pause where employers will have to hire from the domestic pool of unemployed immigrant and native workers."

Not to even mention Trump's flip-flop on self-deportation, which is now (I guess) his position (although, as usual, he's incoherent to the point of babbling on it), but called it "mean" and "maniacal" in 2012.

Republicans didn't have anything going for them with respect to Latinos and with respect to Asians; the Democrats didn't have a policy for dealing with illegal immigrants. What they did have going for them is they weren't mean-spirited about it... Romney had a crazy policy of self-deportation which was maniacal, it sounded as bad as it was. He lost the Latino vote, he lost the Asian vote. He lost anybody who was inspired to come into this country.

Krikorian has this kicker of an ending, dismissing both Rubio and then Trump:

The immigration dove that sounds like a hawk, and the ostensible hawk who turns out to be a dove. I imagine Zuckerberg is pleased.

So has Trump flip-flopped on deportations? Obviously, but it's doubtful he means it; the whole "Big Beautiful Door" thing is as straighforward a signal that you could hope to have that he's not serious about deporting anyone.

And on H1-B's -- I'm not even sure he flip-flopped. Per his own pronouncements -- putting to one side the Sessions immigration plan he's never read -- he's still a huge fan of bringing in all the "great people" from around the world on H1-B's or "whatever you want to call it."

So it might be more accurate to say Donald Trump has never flip-flopped on this issue -- he still holds the same "let as many legal immigrants in as possible" position he always held. I've never heard him actually argue for the Sessions limitations on H1-Bs.

But that might not be the defense that Trump supporter wishes to mount.

So yeah I'll be a man, and I'll do what men do -- tell the truth, and not tell stupid little lies like children and 7th grade girls.

I'll admit that Cruz has filp-flopped on H1-B's -- and now has the right position on them.

But don't come at me like a shill and a hack and tell me that Donald Trump has not flip-flopped on this. The pixels on his website were still wet when he went out and contradicted all of Sessions' immigration plan on H1-Bs. He still talks the exact same way.

Update: Michelle Malkin was the one who introduced me to the Disney train-your-replacement H1-B scandal.

She was, at least in October, unimpressed by Trump's "double talk" on the issue.

I'm fine with this in principle, its a great idea to attract the best and brightest to a country. The question is how and why? It ought never be at the expense of citizen workers, it should be in addition to and to assist them in achieving even greater things.

To me, the secret is in immigration rules and enforcement. We need to make sure the rules heavily encourage the best and brightest to get through faster and easier, while making it much harder for no skill troublemakers to get in. That's the right approach.

22 I think that we need to take the view that Trump isn't using the Art of the Deal for any sort of policy goal, but in order to gain the White House.

Who is he negotiating with? It's not a Democratic Congress. It's not a RINO leadership. It's not George Soros.

It's the Republican Party.

He's using the Art of the Deal on those who have felt disaffected in order to convince them to vote for him. As soon as he has their votes for the nomination, he'll drop it all.

This isn't about policy. It's about votes.

He's playing his supporters and no one else.

We know Trump favors importing who he wants. Most businesses do. He's a businessman.

Bringing in highly skilled professionals, like the country has always done has helped the country.

But, things can change, or there can be a pause for current economic conditions, or even because stopping it dead in it's tracks can stop bad people from slipping in. (of course this happens with "students" to universities - the ultimate easy in to our country).

So for both of them. I have no idea. This is a horrible climate of fear of illegals and terrorists, and economic failure.

If we just followed the laws we had, and tightened up immigration policy... haha

54 Just gonna comment on my beliefs w/o getting into the Cruz/Trump/Rubio debate.

As little as 1 year ago, I to believed in the "More Legal Immigrants is Good" idea. More skilled workers was a great thing!

And you know it, in normal times it very well might be. But then Paris happened and then the President, and many Republicans, started pushing this idea we HAD to accept Syrian refugees (who would also be "legal). And it was then I rethought my position.

With ISIS being such a rampant problem and Muslim jihad being such a rampant problem, immigration, both illegal and legal, need to be restricted. Greatly.

Not using this to excuse Cruz or Rubio, just giving my own personal feelings on the issue. They've changed over the last year or so.

Letting in highly educated, skilled H-1B's may hurt the people they are competing against, but those people will pay more in taxes than they use in services. If we restrict them, we are shooting ourselves in the foot. In particular, right now we have the best university system in the world, very much due to the fact that our universities hire the best researchers in the world, many through the H-1B program. Cruz was just on Shep laughing about Trump's rumored position against H1B visa's. He pointed out that just last week Trump was fined for hiring hospitality employees for a Florida hotel, claiming no American wanted the job when hundreds of experienced American hotel workers were turned away in the interview process. Too costly.

Trump loves him some foreign H1B workers.

74 I don't mind Cruz at all, and would vote for him in a heartbeat. Not that I think he would have what it takes to appeal in the general, poor guy seems about as charismatic as a tire. I also don't think he'd have the guts or firepower to fight back against the entirety of the press shilling for Herstory. It's a shame.

Ace's posts notwithstanding (he's been respectful of Trump supporters if not a fan of the man himself), I will say that the vitriol I've seen towards Trump supporters in the last month has been about enough to turn me off voting completely. I know, I know, concern troll and all that. But it really, really makes me think twice about throwing support behind anyone after seeing Trump supporters being called ignorant, sycophant, KKK, etc.

Someone in the last thread, apologies I forget who, said it best when they said the real choice is who we gets to lie to us this time around. it's also interesting to see so many conservative media types come damn close to being SJW's over all this and using SJW tactics against fellow conservatives. Great, that makes me want to fall in line behind Rubio or Cruz; I at least know that if I do the outrage police might choose to not call me a Nazi. What a wonderful time to be alive.

75 It just defies any sort of reason or deal making ability to totally shit all over THE icon of America First--Jeff Sessions.

Trump has to keep his deal with Sessions...whether he wants to or intends to keep the deal is inconsequential.
The deal with Sessions is a contract and Trump has far more to lose by screwing Sessions than he does by going through with the agreed-on deal to build the wall, etc.

The Sessions endorsement was YUUUUUUUGE.

Down with the GOPE sounds great. It's a bad boy idea that will gain you cred with the left and the right.

Honestly, this is my big fear with Trump. A half-built wall will be put up, at the 10 times the cost of what it should have been, to Trump's friends. Along with that some form of backdoor amnesty will be put in place. Trump fans will claim victory - see the Wall. But the Democrats will get the reward.

Posted by: SH at February 29, 2016 03:46 PM (gmeXX)

124 I think with Trump you get a border wall, and I actually think he'll get Mexico to pay for it. What's so attractive about Trump is that he knows (like Obama) that just having big balls (or unmitigated gall) is often enough to get what you want.

We're in a bad place as a country, and I'm as impatient as anyone to see it turned around. But what troubles me about Trump is that the fix he's offering is an easy one -- just let me take care of it and America will be great. And just like Obama took Bush's executive philosophy and turned it to 11, I see Trump amping it up to a jillionty.

I don't actually fear Trump doing anything nefarious with all this power-- I genuinely believe that for all his bluster and bravado, the guy really does love America and wants to do well -- but I'm not so confident that his version of "well" and mine will very often coincide. And worse, no matter how noble and spectacular a king, there's always a semi-retarded nephew torturing animals in the wings.

We have to dismantle the leviathan. I fear the force of Trump's personal strength -- mostly for better and occasionally for worse -- will set in concrete the executive overreach that we all hate so much from Obama. The machinery of tyranny will be ratcheted several clicks forward.

I like how Cruz speaks of taking the will of the American people to congress -- not simply making deals on our behalf. I don't want a political savior to wipe away 100 years of leftist encroachment in a single swoop -- it's not a fix that can last.

Anything worth doing is going to be hard, and hard-fought. I want my republic back.

129 Full disclosure, I am a Cruz/Trump-leaner. Each one will work for me, in their own ways, as a tool. Not a paragon of moral virtue, or a savior. A political tool to certain end results.

First and foremost, Trump is a brand. It's one thing to produce a shitty product, all companies have done that from time to time (Pepsi Clear), but you have to deliver on your main product (Pepsi).

But if you take a certain position on a political issue, and make that issue/position THE spine of your campaign for President of Uh-Merica, you have to deliver on it to a substantial degree. If you shit the bed on it, or worse, sell it out, your brand is worthless, or worse, actively hated (see the GOPe) There will be no fudging that sell-out, not with people that support him, and not with people that support that issue generally (if not Trump himself). The GOPe has done the very same constantly for 15 years minimum and look where they are at - their base is ready to lynch them, literally not metaphorically.

Will Trump do the same as the GOPe? Will he put his own limbs at the end of four ropes tied to horses? Is Trump THAT stupid? That's the question.

You can site to this type of evidence about Trump all the live long day,
but as Barry proved 8 long years ago, the "bar" for this type of stuff
is somewhere at the bottom of the Mariana Trench - "Got your start in
the living room of a domestic terrorist? No sweat, "Hope Change",
here's the White House!"

And if he is that stupid, and his base realizes it after election, its not gonna be pretty, because he's playing with the well-justified emotions of a lot of fit-to-be-tied people, and he, and the nation, will not recover from that. Will that, in and of itself, be a good thing or bad thing? Turn the page....

I always said I don't mind people coming here as long as they assimilate, are pro-American, hard workers and will be contributors rather than takers.

If Trump's ultimate goal is to import wealth back into the country again expanding our jobs market and economy and in that setting wants more H-1B workers too, I'd be fine with it.

The GOPe has three planks open borders/ endless war/ offshoring. I'm not sure what election they thought they were going to win with that. Jeb had even quit bothering to lie about what he stood for. He, basically, said I oppose everything you believe in, but you're going to vote for me anyway. Then Trump came along, and changed everything. Now the neocons are saying they're headed back to the Democrats and Hillary. So far I'm not seeing a down side.

---
Let me make this simple for you.

The GOP needs to go.

Some have said they'll start a new party if Trump is the nominee. *That* can't be worse than what we have now because they'll at least get that they need to deliver on what they run on lest the next Trump happen to them.

Or Trump discredits the party forever just like obama has the democrats.

Or Sessions knows something I don't and Trump turns out to be good for something.

Any of those is a superior option than a status quo candidate like Rubio. Now, if Rubio drops out of the race and Cruz is the sole alternative, I would be happy to jump ship. But not before then, as there is too great a risk of allowing the CoC internationalists a win.

Posted by: trev006 at February 29, 2016 03:45 PM (MEHba)

You seem to be cocksure that Trump is anti-amnesty and will not "make a deal" in a manner of speaking. I am not so sanguine about him in the Oval Office.

I think he's lying through his teeth to get elected. What's reprehensible about it all is that he is hitting a very raw nerve with the majority of Americans, not necessarily to do what they want should they elect him, but to do whatever he wants to do.

I do not trust Donald Trump at all, and as the days dwindle down, that trust grows less and less and my dread increases.

Sorry to rain on everyone's parade. But the more I see and hear, the more I am disgusted. And the more the die-hards dig in and refuse to even consider they may have been mistaken.

They couldn't find enough American citizen job applicants in the Palmetto State, said Miss Lindsey, who could pass the mandatory pre-employment drug test. They tried and tried.

So instead with all of the new visas, the resort brought in replacement workers from... Jamaica. Yeah, that's the first place that I always think of when I require workers who can pass a drug test: get them from the land of omnipresent ganja. Jah love, mon.

None of the political choices left to us will come close to solving the existential problems we currently have as a country. Its doom all the way down.

I really don't want to see a Republican complete the fundamental transformation of the US. I don't really know what any of these people will really do, however.

Whether they fail based upon deceit, or ineptitude, or naivete, or lack of political power,it is in the end, the same result.

Posted by: ReactionaryMonster browsing Bravely at February 29, 2016 03:47 PM (uURQL)

Oh, he's a guaranteed sell out for sure. He's just pandering to a group of people who don't get pandered to very often.

He's "speaking truth to power" in some people's opinions.

In reality, he's peddling BS, but it doesn't matter because his supporters feel as though their government isn't for them anymore and here comes Trump sounding like he's for them.

It doesn't really matter that he'll sell them out. I don't think they care. I think they just want to be treated like they matter to their government. They don't really care that much about policy. It's about emotions. He's making them feel important and heard, so they support him.

That's why very little seems to dissuade his supporters. They emotionally came to this decision, and it'll take some kind of very emotional change to make them turn away.

174 Wail, regarding these H1B visas, at the Trump rally in Alabama yesterday, former Disney employees, let go to train and replace with foreigners in 2014, spoke at the rally. Just sayin.' Make of it what you will, but they were not happy about being replaced with foreigners. Considering that many openings in engineering fields are flooded with foreign applicants, who went to school here, it is not unusual. But, Disney?

Senator Jeff Sessions has never endorsed anyone as a Senator. I think this is a big deal.

I say this knowing that my kids, who are engineers, were in the minority of a large university. Think of it, Americans in a minority in difficult majors. Some go back to their country. Others stay, and (sometimes) fill empty slots. This is what you get when American students shun "hard" sciences. It is too hard! waaaaa.

I am of the Don't Give a Sheet Party. Just want it to be over with...

Others also spoke at the rally when Senator Sessions endorsed Trump: the two former CIA agents who made the Benghazi move and the ICE agent Rubio ignored at a Congressional hearing re: DREAM Act. I heard his speech, and he mainly was asking the nation not to vote for Rubio. He said the Act was "as if the criminals had wrote it themselves."

I am trying to read through the tea leaves, looking at other sites vs the major FOX Network all but endorsing Rubio...David Duke never endorsed Trump. Similar tactics were done to President Reagan. Dated May 2, 1984...Reagan responded to the Georgia KKK endorsing him the previous month. He responded by saying his views had not changed since last asked in 1980. Same old tired card throwing. Same tactics of desperation.

I was not a Trump person but am seeing how desperate people are to bring him down. Whatever. Will vote (R) for whoever wins in this mud-slinging.

This is like the Opinion of the Hour media. A Times reporter gets knocked to the ground by a guard at today's Trump rally. He kicks and screams. Different videos taken of event. He clearly says "eff you" to guard, gets knocked to ground, screams and points at throat, then grabs guard by throat prior to being hauled away. He then twats that "he won't press charges." ok. Apparently he hates the GOP and yada.

All I am saying is this: it depends on where you read stuff. I have given ALL of the top tier a chance. As you may or may not know I luved Rubio. Lurved him. Helped elect him. Now, not so much. Cruz? Loved him but did not like the Carson stuff he pulled. Did not like that this brilliant man did not disclose some loan stuff. But I am ok with him. Trump? I am liking more, daily, considering the damn world is against him. I have listened to two rallies. I have listened to him, one on one, with reporters vs debates. It does not matter as I cannot vote tomorrow, but I am liking him more and more vs the "elite." (Please keep in mind that when the shouting, in previous elections, about the "elite" or the "establishment" I sort of arm farhted the significance and thought, whoa, wut.And went ahead and voted for Romney. But, with this Trump thing, am seeing what everyone talked about. Splody heads all around). xoxo

He likes to cite Reagan to justify his conversion, but Reagan proved he was a conservative, he'd explain the philosophy, and then he worked in the trenches and proved himself before running for the top slot. The way Trump is doing this, proves its all about him, and he doesn't even give a shit about stopping liberalism, let alone advancing conservatism.

207 Without making a giant post quoting and contrasting what Trump said, what people are interpreting it to mean (typically in the absolute worst terms), and how what he said is not inconsistent or necessarily the inverse of ensuring that immigration policy benefits American workers, I'll just note that, yes, it appears Trump was mistaken and ill-prepared when he admonished Becky Quick.

It's a misstep for a guy just five months or so earlier had not announced.

Tempest in a teapot, IMO.

We are never going to win the general with a candidate who only wants to appeal to a small subset of Republican voters, the exact voters that get us Akin'd on the national stage. I don't care how immaculate his flip-flops may be.

Cruz is smarter on policy, on the constitution, and on the law. He is also more slippery at political maneuvering and more owned by special interests (but you couldn't tell that by his pitches to his supporters).

I don't know what his donors stand for even less than what I know about what Trump stands for, aside from the fact that he is a single term Senator with no real executive experience, and whose roots are of a dominionist nature.

This whole thing is about the GOPe's refusal to represent its party's base, middle class voters who want a better future for their kids and working people who want full time jobs with benefits instead of juggling with two or three part-time jobs with few or no benefits. But his pretense of being against open borders, the PERCEPTION that he is selling, is very important --- and not just because it has allowed him to win the nomination.

When Hillary wins in a landslide, it will be spun by both parties as a massive rejection of the anti-amnesty knuckle-draggers, a mandate for "immigration reform."
And you will see a bipartisan bill that makes the Gang of Eight look almost good in comparison.

If Hillary is to win the WH anyway, I would rather Amnesty Rubio be the losing candidate. If he lost, it would be because so many of us detest his stand on amnesty. (Well, the treachery too, but I'm talking about the primary narrative here.) At least it would serve as a warning to the GOPs.

This is the old Electability argument. But this time it might be right.

Trump strikes me as the most skillful politician in the race so far. He would stomp Shrillary in NY I think, based on the support he gets from blue collar Democrats. That alone would probably cot her the election, but I think it goes further than that. Three weeks ago Bill whack-a-moled for a moment to complain about Trump and he went back into his hole ten minutes later minus a couple of limbs. Trump sliced him up.

Having said all that, I thought we had decided electability was a terrible reason to vote for someone and instead we want to concentrate on principles. Trump doesn't have any.

Okay. See Cruz is too new to the general population and he can and has been branded previously as a kook. It takes a lot of time and money to reverse that brand. That is in fact why the MSM spends so much time doing it to republicans. It works.
Trump branded himself already. It would take a lot to undo his brand, in fact Hillary doesn't have the time and money to undo it. Those who hate Trump will hate him no matter what. Those that don't hate Trump probably won't start hating him even after the DNC spends a billion on the project. They might just be suspicious. But guess what, everyone was already suspicious of Trump from the jump. Suspicion is baked into the cake. Trump is adisappointing choice in a lot of ways, but he leads in the polls well beyond any margin of error, abuse or gamesmanship of the system. He's the legit front runner. No one else is even close.GOPe look into the mirror and say, thiscould not havehappened except we screwedup for nearly a decade.

To be honest with ourselves, no one knows what President Cruz would do either, not even President Cruz. What happens is not just the end product of intent, it is intent, plus skill, plus diligence, plus political power, plus luck.

I am fairly certain however that Dondi would be able to push through amnesty. Not because of any skill on his part, but because that's what the Uniparty wants of him and they will get their will, eventually. If you are the type of person to pray, do it. If not may I suggest drinking? For those of you who are dual threats, pray first then drink.

Arguing that "this mesmerizing fascist is going to machine-gun the Republican establishment to the floor, and I don't mean that figuratively" would at least try to appeal to our common humanity and feed into the stereotypes most people are holding of Donald Trump.

You'd have a whole new set of problems, but at least it'd be slightly in tune with the reality of the past few months!

260 Look guys there's a legitimate apologia that can be made for Trump (and making it the last couple months has really made me understand the full scope of the word "apologist" as used to describe an advocate for a given philosophy). But I'm bored of making it and and you all have heard me make it anyway...

Ok here goes:

Fuck the GOPE
Least bad option
Liberal heads will asplode
PC pushback
Trojan Horse for capitalism and limited government to the millenial generation
I cannot stand Mexicans and their derivative food and sexy, sexy chicas who won't respond to my tinder messages (my avatar on tinder is my favorite Goku Hikaru Cowboy Senpai character).
A robust and pragmatic approach to national defense

He has made these arguments, in stilted and cringe-inducing speech after stilted and unbearably inarticulate speech, and has garnered support which is snowballing towards 50%

That speaks more highly of the electorate than it does of the candidate, in my opinion, and it's a relief to see that unabashed American nationalism and capitalism appeals to an electorate which elected Obama twice.

Now that we've given people a taste for non-establishment condoned political discourse and a fuck you, 'Merica stance that's even pulling minority support, against all conventional wisdom, let's not pull the rug out from under the average voter and go "that's a bit too much, back onto the plantation with you."

It's gonna be ugly and loud and messy and trolls are going to get everywhere, even when the banhammer connects. Worse, in that case actually. I don't have any good answers to these very legitimate questions. And I'm thinking that the fact that the debate isn't all charted out ahead of time should be considered a feature and not a bug.

We're Americans and we've always been a little obnoxious to people who grew up in pinky-out aristocratic societies. Like Washington DC.

I love you all.

Because the Obama administration has had its boot on the neck of business with a long list of regulation that can get you fined out of business or thrown into PMITA prison for violations, we have had its a decade of less than 3% growth.

When the economy was growing under the Reaganomic economy, immigration may have had social consequences but the economic effects were generally positive. With Obama's new normal stagnant, zero sum, crony economy, people with political connections do well and the rest of us fight over scraps.

273 Well, I don't worry about Trump double-crossing us in office because, IMO, he doesn't have a prayer of winning the general.

To be fair, I've seen that exact same criticism of Trump.

I accept that both Cruz and Trump have Establishment connections (K-rist, who doesn't?), but I don't see either of them being celebrated by the GOPe or the media. The Establishment water carriers are ripping them both. They are both outsiders, but neither one is a pure radical.

What is Trump's actual position? Deport them all forever? Or is that a starting point for actual immigration enforcement? Of course I'm gonna ask for the moon in negotiations, but settle for what I really am trying to get. Is that what he's doing? Do his supporters know that? Are they OK with that?

Cruz and Trump are both political weapons. The GOPe (and Dems) are the intended victim. Gun or knife? Grenade or poison?

I think Cruz is the better candidate, but he's the slow knife/slow acting poison when you're already in the middle of being beaten to death with a bat. For some, it may be too late for his type of tactics to "save the nation". Thus, the support of Trump, the hope that "we" can use a blunt instrument of our own to fight off our opponents/enemies. We're just hoping our Trump-bat doesn't break mid-swing.

I've made the comparison myself, and I think it goes a certain distance (populist with little regard for constitutionalism), but Jackson was a self-made man who had raised himself from poverty to leading men in one of the most importantly unimportant battles in American History (The Battle of New Orleans) while winning handily.

Their both gruff with little regard for those of the "upper" classes, it seems. However, Jackson was from a very different time when presidential power was actually fairly limited. I'm no fan of Jackson, but I do not regard him as a bad president or a particularly damaging one.

That being said...I can't imagine what kind of damage he would do in the modern presidency.

I think these electability predictions are silly. The big factor will be low info voters and they will be informed by the media, particularly non-news media. That's how so many were surprised that super-electable Romney was crushed by Obama despite the economic problems of the day.

Now, I personally thought Trump would have no chance in the primary, so I won't pretend to be an expert on electability, but he will have a very hard time beating Hillary.

Whoa, kemosabe. I didn't say all the establishment senators, I think ALL the senators hate Cruz. In the "endorsement primary," he hasn't gotten support from a single one. Including and especially, because I'm gonna run this into the ground, Senator Jeff Sessions. That's not a sign of mildly inferior deal-making and it's not a sign of being the BEST conservative ever. It's a sign that no one you personally work with likes you. Good job on all that Texas support, but he's not cracking 50% even in the place that knows him best.

Cruz is a niche product against a wildly popular brand, and that's why he's losing.

The fact is that it doesn't matter who gets nominated by the Republicans, he's going to get savaged by the MFM . . . Trump included.

It remains to be seen whether or not Trump can actually withstand the full-on whirlwind onslaught of the 24/7 media attack from all angles that any Republican Presidential nominee must bear.

I don't think he can, honestly, but I'm prepared to be surprised.

It's almost the worst of both worlds, he'll get no credit for being self-funding but he'll collect very little as most people will think he's not fundraising.

I guess the reference to more immigration is from the leaks from Trump's book.

But
bringing in quality workers (that become Americanized) is still a good
plan, as long as it is not to displace Americans. The problem with
Kennedy's immigration is it imported third worlders.

But Trump/Sessions say we need a pause first, to get the Americans to fill slots.

I believe, you can have and can promote a healthy H1B program and still put American workers first, by ferreting out the abuses and limiting the number keyed to real world data on industry needs. There is no need for a blanket ban on H1Bs, and it would be silly to think suspending the H1B program (Cruz current position) would do anything other than harm companies ability to innovate.

A smarter way would be to incentivize companies to sponsor American STEM workers, while phasing in restrictions, with the ultimate goal of tightening up the program by tying the H1B program to real world data.

The idea that only foreigners have the skill set necessary to do that level of engineering is almost in the same vein as "jobs Americans won't do" on the lower end.

We'll be fine, and engineers will be better compensated.

If plumbers and electricians started routinely making $200k a year, enough would get in the trade to where you find a healthy equilibrium and wages would come down.

Nonsense. Iraq was a relatively stable country when Bush left office. Obama is the one who turned it into a shithole and opened the door to ISIS. Iran was under a crushing sanctions agreement and pretty well bottled up.

It was Obama who lost Egypt, who bombed the shit out of Libya and turned it into a failed state. It was Obama who ignored Syria until it was too late.

Oh, if only this were true. I appreciate Mike the Dirty jobs guys's work at bringing attention to the trades and jobs in the USA that are needing to be done and are not attracting workers.

1. We have raised at least two generations now who have been brainwashed into believing, along with their parents, that going to college and having a fancy sounding title with a desk and a laptop is the picture of success. It's why we have millions of young adults with no job, part time jobs, barista jobs, etc. and $100,000 of college loan debt for their environmental studies degree or african history degree.
2. Those same adults are not going to be caught dead doing job you described. You could pay them $50 an hour and they won't last a day. Why?
a. We no longer have a wage structure that permits small businesses to hire teenagers to do menial, low skilled jobs and put up with all the grief that comes with hiring minors , but that they can learn to be an employee and to do physical labor.
b. Mom and Dad (with the divorce rate, typically Mom) would be horrified that junior would be doing such a job when he went to fancy college. All her friends would know....Mom (and Dad and Grandma and Grandpa) will pay for food, allow them to live at home, get them a car, pay their insurance, and health insurance(remember age 26?) phone, etc.
c. "Poor people" are smart enough to know that they arent' going to get out of that menial job and move up due to no college degree. They can live without starving on all the endless govt. programs and therefore have no incentive to work, and every disincentive not to work.

I live in farm country. Every farmer I know cannot hire labor, even for 1 or 2 weeks in the summer to bale hay. One hay farmer I know cannot get the local 16 year olds to show up for a day of throwing bales, driving tractors, etc. even though they are paid $10 an hour. Forget the ones over 18, they are all on food stamps, housing support, utility support, etc. and see no reason to sweat in the sun and make $1000.

502 I'm a Trump supporter, and I agree he did flip-flop. The thing is, he flipped in a way that made it the key issue of this campaign, when Cruz and the others simply tried to ignore the issue. Cruz came around big only after Trump made it a signature issue, and then withstood a firestorm of negative publicity and refused to back down. This makes him a more important signifier of the issue's salience than Cruz.

Another problem, is that Cruz is going to be a no sale north of the Mason-Dixon line. I'm sorry, but he will turn off the very white-working class and marginal middle-class voters the GOP needs to win. Self-deportation, as I really define it, and that's the way I define it, is you're going to get some to go, and the rest are going to go out."

And we should not forget the other part of the job equation is trade. In 1991 Trump was praised in a House committee where he testified/advised, for understanding how we were exporting jobs. That may be a union position, but in that case they are right. Just wrong on some union tactics and connections.

The idea that if we don't let a huge influx in we'll all starve to death is just not how capitalism works.

530 Trump said Bush knew there were no WMD in Iraq. He didn't say Bush had poor intel and made a bad decision. He said Bush lied the US into war. Code Pinko territory.

Trump went too far. However, while Bush didn't outright "lie" us into war--that is, the claim that he knew there were no WMD's and insisted there were-- he certainly bullshitted us into war with flimsy papers, Ahmed Chalabi and rank speculation, all of which was reinforced with group thinking and heaping obloquy on anyone who dared dissent. I think the GOP should confront that fact. It was also this sort of unchecked group thinking that led to problems like the financial meltdown and FEMA issues. Yes, the Democrats played a role in this, but deliberately blinding yourself did the GOP no favor in dealing with them.

544 "The greater truth is that what Bush did in the ME is in retrospect a disaster, and arguing over details is for losers."

Again, Bush handed a relatively stable situation in the ME to Obama. Obama is the one who has blown it up. Obama pouted his way out of a SOF agreement in Iraq. Obama blew up Egypt and Libya. Obama drew and walked away from red lines in Syria.

This should be hammered home again and again. Sure, maybe invading Iraq was a mistake. But on January 20, 2008 it was stabilized with essentially zero US combats deaths month to month. Now it is the breeding ground for ISIS. Iraq is a disaster because Obama wanted it to be a disaster. Obama is such a small, petty man he sacrificed everything we did and the Iraqi people out of spite for Bush.

575 Y'all know what baffles me (yes, still not napping)...for eight years politicians have been yapping about the mythical ELEVEN million illegal aliens (and, yep, I still call em what they are). So, we have to assume, that they did not increase population. Yet! Most babies born in America are not white folks or Irish.

More like forty million or so. This does not include the refugees imported, by Baroque, into Amerikka.

Ok. So I sort of saw, in my own little world of Floriduh, that E-Verify seemed to work and self deport. I no longer saw a bazillion trucks of yard crews, nor guy whipping out an inch think wad of cash at TJ Maxx, nor seeing a few mailing remittances wires to Mexico. Ok.

However, to think of a hard-nose Cruz or Trump in office, some might deport out of fear. Amiright? The prisons could be depleted, pronto, if a few cargo planes loaded and dropped across the border in a desert somewhere...after wall built. You know, the MS-13 tattoo guys and gals. Those who we are paying for room and food in jail.

Back when I gave a sheet and got all fired up and stuff, I looked up how much of my taxes were paying for illegals. The studies were old, then, but it said, back in, oh, 2000, each Florida tax payer paid about $9000 a year to educate, provide healthcare, and keep these thugs in jail and not deport. So, just imagine, sixteen years later, what we are all paying for these anchor babies, their baby-daddies in jail, and to provide translators in school for the pretend 14 yr olds who are 30. bah. However, I don't trust much Trump says As I am Not sure he has any core beliefs aside from Trump, and even if Cruz does put a moratorium on h1b visas, which would affect my immediate family, I would still support him. The rule of law and the Constitution are very important to me and are key to making America great again.

Sorry about the bizarre capitalization. It's this darn dictation software.

587 Of all them, who is best equipped to deal with this?

Posted by: Tim in Illinois. Blah, blah,blah... at February 29, 2016 05:08 PM (WVsWD)

Cruz... he certainly has dealt with it for long enough. Remember... the man most hated by the Senate. Single-handed cause of the "government shutdown". The reason the Republican party was going to lose and lose big in 2014.

How did that work out for the press and GOPe BTW?

588 Sorry, they were mostly Asian and East Indian, with more Asians I think.

Gee, darn, that sure changes my mind about him.

591 doesnt matter that Saddam was in violation of the 17 UN resolutions, attempted to assassinate a former USPresident, was unable to account for 200 tons of VX gas or continually fired on aircraft in the no fly zone. That besides being a haven for terrorist training camps. There is also strong evidence he assisted in the first WTC bombing.

*The UN didn't seem to care, and refused to endorse the war, so why does that resolution matter? It doesn't.
*The US didn't act on that for over a decade. No one would have accepted that as a Casus Belli in 2003. It was never pushed.
*Wow a third world country had horrible accounting practices. Amazing.
*"Strong evidence" for yet another decade old-incident.

With the exception of the missing VX gas, none of these were ever pushed as justification for the war. Even on that score, the case was made with crummy evidence and hearsay, and any skeptical voice was shouted down with a blizzard of BS, comparing them to Hitler apologists. That you somehow still think the Bush Administration's argument and preparation for war was somehow defensible is not a good sign.

What if a young student in the process of choosing a field looks at what has happened to American IT workers all over the country and decided to avoid a field that faces so much foreign competition? When asked for advice by young adults entering the tech fields I advice them to consider just that. If they are smart enough to do that job, then don't you think they're smart enough to do some research into competition and expected pay levels, and employment levels?

593 The thing that we're losing is the assimilation

Now that we've de-assimilated the black population by electing Obama it's time to do the same for women via Hillary.

You keep saying that and I know it's out of support but Cruz did not
change his position because of pressure from his constituents. He is
still for TPA and if they had not continued the funding for the IM EX (
McConnell liar) and inserted immigration language he would have voted
for it.

Posted by: Joe Hallenbeck at February 29, 2016 05:07 PM (ZLAox)

It sure seemed like his constituents were giving him holy hell... but there was also the Turtle's lying lies about IM EX and the revelations about the immigration language, too. I am just glad he changed his position and wised up on the advisability of approving trade deals negotiated by this administration.

595 False choice , Bob. But thanks for playing.

Here's a question for you: how do you "hit" the GOP with the Constitution when they have spent the last 60 years ignoring it?

Hint: The Constitution doesn't scare them.

Posted by: Mortimer at February 29, 2016 04:56 PM (vgERT)

----- ----- ---Non sequitur. It doesn't matter if it's been ignored for the last 60 years. Your same reasoning could be applied to the border issue."Nothing is going to work because enforcement has been ignored for the last 50 years."
The same solution to both apply. Have someone enforce the existing laws, and have someone well versed, with a track record of knowing, understanding, and fighting for the Constitution.Start there. If not there,...where, in your opinion?

Posted by: Bob at February 29, 2016 05:19 PM (aRUb8)

596 So here We go again... Trump VS Cruz.... Obviously if You've made a "choice" there is no changing Your mind... I haven't because I truly don't like any of them..... If it comes down to Hillary VS{fill in the name} I'll vote for whomever including the hated Rubio....

Nope, sorry. Cruz I'll vote for. Rubio, no way. I don't feel bad about that either, as the Rubots have a #NeverTrump thing going themselves, and that's fine. Rubio has shown himself to be an absolute threat to the nation with his positions on amnesty. Hillary shares that position, but at least you know where she's coming from.

Really, I almost wish the GOPe would steal the nomination, hand it over to Rubio and then reap the utter collapse of support they deserve.

598 You ever notice that all these free market people, who worship and extol the value of allowing market forces to set prices abandon all that when market forces turn in favor of the employee. When that happens they run to the government and beg them to intervene and import some cheap labor so that market forces might be thwarted and prevent a rise in the cost of labor. .

Posted by: DFCtomm at February 29, 2016 05:27 PM (mKAPw)

599 Just a preview of how the press will turn on Trump once he's dispatached the other GOP candidates.

601 In reference to the comparison between Donald Trump and Andrew Jackson, how many men has Trump killed in duels?

If the answer is "As many as Andrew Jackson" that would be awesome.

603 502 Wrong. Cruz has been talking about immigration issues and a wall since 2012. Trump in his laziness co-opted his biggest rivals ideas after his slogans and lack of substance began to be questioned and of course as he admitted, when he needed to fire up his rallies. And his only response back to Cruz? You're a liar, a nasty guy, no one likes you. And the cult lapped it up. There are lots of Trump supporters that truly believe he can change everything. I disagree but that's what they believe. Then there's the ones who want to burn it all down. These are not necessarily Trump supporters but they need him. Mark Levin put it best, this isn't populism, this isn't nationalism, it's anarchy. If you don't believe that go to a few other previous conservative sites and the Trump supporters here are pussycats compared to them. This is their war, not in the streets, they want to bring it all down at the voting box and they no more support Trump than the man in the moon.

604 People arguing Trump electability are funny. This is the guy who on tape said HRC was a great secretary of state AFTER Benghazi. Hill is going to play that tape on loop every time he tries to criticize her.
