Trump's Off-the-Record Interview With the New York Times: Is He A Lot More Flexible, and a Lot Less Hard-Line, on Immigration Than He's Telling Conservative Voters?

Given that this is his signature issue, and the only thing I personally would entertain voting for him on, I'd sure like to know if this is true.

The New York Times can't release the off-the-record transcripts-- but Donald Trump could, and he could give them permission to do so.

Of course, I don't think he will.

Ben Smith, at Buzzfeed:

On Saturday, columnist Gail Collins, one of the attendees at the meeting (which also included editor-in-chief Dean Baquet), floated a bit of speculation in her column:

The most optimistic analysis of Trump as a presidential candidate is that he just doesn’t believe in positions, except the ones you adopt for strategic purposes when you’re making a deal. So you obviously can't explain how you’re going to deport 11 million undocumented immigrants, because it's going to be the first bid in some future monster negotiation session.

Sources familiar with the recording and transcript --which have reached near-mythical status at the Times -- tell me that the second sentence is a bit more than speculation. It reflects, instead, something Trump said about the flexibility of his hard-line anti-immigration stance.

So what exactly did Trump say about immigration, about deportations, about the wall? Did he abandon a core promise of his campaign in a private conversation with liberal power brokers in New York?

...

"If [Trump] wants to call up and ask us to release this transcript, he's free to do that and then we can decide what we would do," Rosenthal said.

All candidates are taking a strategic position on immigration: Rubio is pretending that he'll actually secure the border before rushing to grant amnesty (he won't). Cruz is saying he is against legalization "now and forever." Trump is claiming he'll deport 11 million people before letting most of them back in through a Big Beautiful Door.

As far as the immigration hard-line goes, I imagine there's going to be some bargaining on this.

But I'd like to know just how flexible the guy running as a "deal-maker," the guy who says "you have to be a little bit establishment," is on his signature issue.

3 However "flexible" he may be, he will always be a hundred times better than Hillary and a billion times better than Sanders.

Their starting points will be to the extreme left. Trump may simply on occasion bend in that direction.

5 It's a no brainer that he's going to negotiate away most of the deportation, that's something that should be expected based on his initial position. I do believe he will attempt to build some sort of wall, and beef up border security, the deportation stuff, I don't believe anyone is serious about.

What we're seeing here is professional-level "concern trolling."

Of course the NYT wants Trump to be as flexible as possible on immigration; but they know that his supporters wont be. So the Times breaks out the fainting couch at the very thought he could bend! Oh, how shocking!

They themselves of course don't mind. They're trying to dissuade his voters.

11 You mean, flexible like those reports of Cruz calling around this week? The reports say he's willing to suspend his campaign for a promise of an appointment to the Supreme Court. Word is that Ruibio turned him down.

There is going to be a lot of bogus stuff floating around, in an attempt to influence this election. Might be wise to withhold judgment until something more concrete comes up. (As in the case of the bogus David Duke endorsement. Looks like the media couldn't bother to actually ask Duke about it.)

17 The NY Slimes has a solid record of flinging poo at Republican candidates. And Buzzfeed? Yeah, another unimpeachable source.

I don't think Trump has ever called for a 500% increase in H1B visas, either.

When you know your opponent is leading -- and, in many polls, increasing his lead -- it's time to make insinuations about the size of his wang, accuse him of Mafia connections, and toss out vague hints that he not all he's cracked up to be. Especially when your editorial position leans toward keep the borders wide open.

Me... OK... I want to round them all up, and use a catapult to shoot them over the big huge wall I'm going to build...

Them... you can't do that! Big Meanie Head!!! OK... lets let dreamers stay... and kick out the bad guys...

Me... no... OK... I won't use a Catapult... but they gotta leave.. and we'll let the nice ones back in eventually...

Eventually.... we compromise on actually USING the Existing Laws already on the books, which will force many illegals to leave... and give more resources to actually do it... with no Amnesty....

But the end result would be many less illegals in this country.

Its the Art of the Deal...

21 I see this as a nothingburger. Even if he did tell the times he had some flexibility, I don't think it would matter.

Trump has already signaled he would make deals. The best deals, great deals. This will not affect his standing on immigration with his supporters. Not with Sessions endorsement now.

For me, I fully expect Trump to in no way deliver on immigration as his supporters think he will. To the extent a deal is made it will be worse than a deal that Rubio would make because a Rubio deal would be severely scrutinized. A Trump deal may not since it is a Trump deal.

35 I think people have to concede that if he's blowing smoke up our asses, then he's got pretty smart people fooled, including and not the least of which is Sessions.

Sessions helped him formulate his immigration policy and advised him for months, there's even crossover in Trump's staff and Sessions' own. Unfortunately Trump can't tip his hand on how low he's willing to go otherwise he'd lose all leverage, so we'd have to guess where the middle would be.

39 Trump can challenge in NYS and even win. I've been saying this for months. Upstate is part of Appalachia, and will vote accordingly. The polls in this story show Trump winning NYC suburbs. Key is low turnout in NYC, which is how DiBlasio got to be mayor because less than 20% of eligible voters bothered to show up.

If you dig into Hillary's "impressive" beating of an old Jew from a snow state in the southern plantation of South Carolina, Democratic white turnout was down 40%, black turnout was down 20%, from 2008. Meanwhile Republican turnout was up a lot. This pattern can hold in the general. Hillary has high negatives which can be driven up, so her turnout will be down. Her core base is actually relatively small.

So Trump can win Ohio and Michigan and Nevada and New Hampshire, etc. He already has a lock on Florida. Force Hillary to fight in NY where she's very beatable and it's game over.

The NY Post story is by Fred Dicker who's the best journalist around on NYS political matters, so it's legitimate.

But go ahead and beat on Trump, thinking that Cruz might have a shot in the general, and that Rubio is something more than a glib first term Senator who's sunk to the level of doing dick jokes.

In a way, I wish it would clarify the race because maybe then the GOP would turn its attention to destroying Hillary instead of its own candidates.

OTOH, I'm beginning to agree that there's absolutely nothing that will get his supporters to drop him...

Posted by: Countrysquire at February 29, 2016 02:34 PM (eEBON)

47 This is sort of the same thing as Romney saying there is something lurking in Trump's taxes. If he doesn't release them, he must be hiding something. If he does release them, they will find something to hang him on. Anything. A donation. His income. The tax he paid. ANYTHING.

Same is true here. If Trump doesn't answer this call to release the 'whole interview,' the assumption will be he is lying about his immigration position. If he does release the interview, they will find something to hang him on. ANY fluctuation. Any word they can twist.

Look, I am totally okay if he says something about deporting them in 'waves' or deporting the worst ones first or allowing for illegals to leave and then 'come back in.' These are all fine with me. I'm also okay with him saying our goal is to deport them all, but with the court system being so clogged, it might be hard. All of these things are fine.

I still would like someone to explain why, if a man is getting a huge following for his immigration comments and other things, he would then get into office and completely betray that? Trump likes to be liked. Especially by the little guy. He talks about it all the time...how he gets along better with cab drivers and doormen. So this idea that Trump secretly wishes to betray all of the voters who are coming out in droves to see him just doesn't work for me. He would instantly go from a beloved candidate and president, to the most hated man in America. Sorry. Doesn't gibe with me.

49 And just food for thought...

All we need to do to solve the illegal immigration issue, is actually use the full force of Government to find and prosecute them for the laws they already break.

ICE should have access to the IRS database... State Officials should have access to Immigration records... and ID databases... so they can actively prosecute Identity theft.

Its also still a Felony to knowingly aid and abet an illegal to stay in this country.... so prosecute Sanctuary Cities for Conspiracy.

Its all possible under EXISTING Law, if we had a President and AG who would actually ENFORCE the law.

Posted by: Don Quixote at February 29, 2016 02:36 PM (RK8AH)

50 Does this... actually make him worse?

If you're super isolationist/pro-deportation, I guess. If the only acceptable position for you is nothing less stringent than what Trump was saying, I can see how it's a bad thing.

But even if he's willing to make a deal at some point, we don't know what his end point is. If (for the sake of argument), his real position is something like Cruz and he's just taking the hardline right now for the sake of getting a better deal, if you care about immigration, I don't think this realistically lowers him that much for you. You want some move to the right(?) on that issue. And Trump's public position at the extreme gives you the best overall outcome, because regardless of what he actually believes is necessary, the outcome is going to be closer to that than if you start off with a more modest goal.

Posted by: joe, living dangerously at February 29, 2016 02:36 PM (KUaJL)

51 I agree Trump could well take NY in the general. His ability to draw working class white voters is amazing, and changes the whole election dynamic. Just go to the 538 tool and play around with only that one category; all other things being equal, Trump doesn't have to increase the vote of very many working class voters to win.

Do I trust trump? No.

Link: http://www.steynonline.com/7349/europeans-and-americans-on-the-rampage

I don't see why this is a negative. What it really shows is that Rubio and Cruz are less savvy. Cruz is now meekly stating that he's in favor of deporting a few illegals. Where do you think he's going to end up after the Dems and Donors push back?

I did this on my own for NYS awhile back by county. 40% of NYS voters are upstate. Trump wins if (1) upstate turnout increases and it breaks strongly for Trump, (2) Trump wins NYC suburbs, which recent polls says he will, and (3) you have lower NYC turnout compared with 2012.

86 If true, why now? Why does this leak the day before Super Tuesday? Wheels within wheels.

You know what's funny? I think the Times could lay out their evidence of equivocation and political posturing and Trump would then deny it or explain it... and he'd lose zero votes.

People are pissed. Trump gets this. He has said that since he started doing these rallies, he's been empowered and impressed by the folks. That could be enough for a squish position to get firmed up over several months. I have to believe his crowds and energy would firm up a spine a bit going forward.

Of COURSE I (and most people here) are going to vote for Cruz in the primary. But in all likelihood it will be futile. By the time I vote in June, for example, the race for the nom will likely already be over anyway.

This article is based on the presumption that Trump will will the primary.

Not only that, she ignored an Ambassador in Libya pleading for help. Imagine her in charge of the military, our weapons systems, the IRS, you name it...SCARY.

Trump is a businessman. Not a politician. He may be out for himself, but as he said in a speech not too long ago, "What's good for Trump is good for the American people." He is CORRECT. Even if all of his policies are completely predicated on benefiting himself, they will also help average Americans. So there is nothing that scares me about a President Trump.

I saw what Bill did to the presidency. The satellite technology he gave away to the Chinese. The selling of the Lincoln Bedroom to the highest bidder. Hillary is much much worse.

164 "Because we don't give a damn what Trump believes. "
Yes we know. Policies don't matter, just what he says. That always works out well.

"We care who Trump is - Not GOPe - and what Trump will do."
Well if he doesn't believe in the things you think he does- like illegal immigration- how can you know what he will do? I mean he's already hired illegal immigrants, so why would he actually do something about that?

"Trump's already taken fire for taking our side and pushing the discussion in a better direction for America as a nation. He's making steps in the right direction, which signals Trump will do right by us. "
You have no idea if that is true, and based on world and Trumps history, he won't.

"Will that play out? Who knows, but Trump's winning because he's already accomplished more than anyone else in the GOP field."

He's accomplished nothing other than fooling a lot of people. It's the same as Obama.

241 Sure I do. Cruz and even Rubio are more acceptable alternatives at this point. Rubio is worrisome on illegals and will have to be managed but Trump is all over the map on everything.

It is intellectually dishonest to hammer Rubio for flipping on illegals but give Trump a pass of flipping back and forth, forth and back on issue after issue. The cure for bad candidates is not to pick the worst one.
Posted by: JackStraw

Rubio is part of the establishment that has screwed us over.

Trump is not.

Rubio either got rolled by shumer AND Gillihag or was actively joining with them.

Trump is at least making noises against them.

Rubio is already whining about being in the Senate. In the middle of his first term.

trump has started and stopped businesses.

I'm not giving trump a pass on anything.

I think that I understand the frustration and the resulting appeal that trump seems to have.

And speaking of a NYT piece I'm absolutely not going to link but will quote from, get this bit (from Lucianne):

CHICAGO - Test scores suggest that the Barbara A. Sizemore Academy, an African-centered school, is struggling mightily. Its students in third through eighth grades scored in only the 14th percentile in reading on national achievement tests last year and in the eighth percentile in math. (Snip) "When you talk about children who are suffering from all the ills of, you know, the residual effects of slavery," said Danielle Robinson, who is in her third year as Sizemore's principal, "absolutely this is where they need to be."

Wow. One hundred and fifty plus years later, it's clear that there is only one reason for low black achievement scores in her school.

Being a conservative means being lied to and betrayed by the people you vote for more often than not. I think that it is very likely that Trump will betray the people who are enthusiastically voting for him in the primary. On the other hand, you have Rubio who already betrayed his voters.

When it comes to the general election, the choice will be for the lesser evil and in an election that has Hillary Clinton in it, the lesser evil will always be the other candidate.

317 Trump's site only uses the word deport for the gangs. He has said they'll be deported day one, which means year one I guess, or as they are caught.

He has said many things, but he attack/supports people by attacking/supporting their position at times. With McCain he likes military that don't get caught. With Romney, it's mean to make people self-deport. With Hillary, she'd be great at ... whatever.

On the trail he has also said people would leave on their own once they saw others being deported. And he supports e-verify.

He says there will be a big door to come back but his site says "Applicants for entry to the United States should be required to certify
that they can pay for their own housing, healthcare and other needs
before coming to the U.S."

Since he is already running for the general, he has no need to sound harsh on border control. It will only hurt him, even if he fully intends to keep to the tough standards. But I don't think his real position is to forcibly track down 20 million and drag them out. They'll go on their own, or be caught doing illegal things, it time.

After Trump's supporters got dinged by something in some poll (showing that they were racist, stupid, you know, the usual smear of anyone to the right of Joe Stalin) someone rebutted that poll with a second in which (IIRC) something like 71% of black respondents opposed the Emancipation Proclamation?

This already exists, in some areas, but it's completely worthless.

The "family reunification" plan is regularly used by, among others, Chinese-Americans. Typically for Chinese to bring in their elderly parents from overseas. As part of that, the citizen family are required to sign a pledge that they will personally financially support said parents upon arrival, and not allow them to become "a public charge".

Since there is absolutely no enforcement or followup, the Chinese (a very pragmatic culture) immediately dump Mom and Dad into SSI as soon as the plane lands. Hey, if the gweilos are foolishly giving stuff away, it would be stupid not to take what they're giving.

====

To quote Samuel Jackson: EXACTAMUNDO!

Mitt was not just right, but this was too extreme for Trump, and Trump denounced.

Nothing else really matters much. Talking about amnesty or walls, it's e-verify that is the issue, enforcing the existing law, which Obama has chosen not to do, which is the issue.

I'm more of a Cruz fan, but Rubio would be perfectly palatable but for the immigration thing. And even then, if he'd come clean and promise to enforce existing law (I know he's given verbal promises, etc.), he'd be MILES better than Obama, already.

This focus on immigration is a chimera. Trump keeps talking about the wall, but it's not the crux of a problem. Border jumpers come in at a few specific places, and there already is Congressional approval to put walls there, but Obama has stopped it.

Trump is Obama's final victory. He's so demoralized the Republicans that they're disintegrating, giving it up for shaved reality apes, believing Alex Jones' conspiracy theories, and are in effect assuring the election of Caligula's Horse.

398 pretty sure I heard Trump yesterday say all his employees are now e-verified. So why would he NOT want to fulfill his promise? It's not like he gets money from the Chamber to sell us out. It is Cruz that till recently wanted five times as many H-1Bs. Why would Trump NOT push to build the wall over the 1000 mile part that could use it? And to have border patrol and ICE actually do their jobs?

He will be less harsh than getting 20M illegals out in the first year, but Cruz is not big on deporting either.

True. OpenSecrets.org compile the Federal Election Commission reports, and Wall Street heavily favors Democrats, who demonize Wall Street at every turn. Which Wall Street accepts in what is obviously an elaborately staged political kabuki.

406 Trump is a businessman. Not a politician. He may be out for himself, but as he said in a speech not too long ago, "What's good for Trump is good for the American people." He is CORRECT. Even if all of his policies are completely predicated on benefiting himself, they will also help average Americans. So there is nothing that scares me about a President Trump.
Posted by: K-E at February 29, 2016 02:46 PM (OV2w5)

Couple things wrong here, although trump may not be an elected politician, he certainly is gifted in the art of politics. He has used the political system and politicians for his own gains his whole life. And I'm afraid trump has no idea what the "average joe" is except for the occasional one he encounters shining his shoes.

I am so tired of hearing that Cruz is unelectable, he is actually the most conservative one standing and possibly the smartest one we've been giving a chance to actually vote for in a long time. But because trumps comes out and says a few things that makes everybody wets there pants, all of the sudden he's the guy to get it done, let's just close our eyes and plug our ears so we don't have to actually hear the truth.

What a f-d up mess this is.

408 I'd been assuming the media would hold back from attacking Trump until he'd locked up the nomination, then easily help Hillary destroy him in November. But first the John Oliver thing and now Buzzfeed are making effective taunts and hits on Trump.

Maybe the media decided that allowing a deranged fascist to make it that far in the process was too dangerous after all, and instead are choosing to take him out now to be on the safe side? Or do they think Trump cannot now be stopped, so it's safe to start turning their guns on him? I suspect Trump's approval ratings nationally will never recover once this onslaught commences.

if you really want to get rid of illegals, allow companies to vet documents, and, while you're at it, cut off all federal funds to any state, county or city that has a sanctuary law.

while we're at it, lets start rounding up all the illegals at the Home Despot parking lot, and fine all the homeowners who have a maid/nanny/whatever, and their gardeners, all of whom get paid under the table.

452 Ace,

If you truly believe Donald Trump is going to do a thing about illegal immigration I suggest you look into his record. Seriously. Maybe you'll find something I missed which will explain or give context.

But by my read he uses illegal immigrants frequently and ships American jobs to Mexico.

http://tinyurl.com/jhxwgt4

http://tinyurl.com/o89pwwf

http://tinyurl.com/zrmq2qs

http://tinyurl.com/j8kzkvy

Read those articles. Dig up your own. Then ask yourself how a man whose bottom line is dependent on illegal immigration is going to do a thing to restrict it.

I don't believe he will. I believe he's just saying what people want to hear to get elected, and he believes most people don't do their own research -- they follow soundbites. Never mind he often contradicts his own position from a few years ago.

That's why I will not support him.

But if you do the research and come to a different conclusion, I'll be interested in the facts supporting your case, and the conclusion you build on it. I'm a conservative. That means I care about facts, not rhetoric.

455 452 I discount 1st link--it's way back when. Doesn't count. No it doesn't. And it's Politifact.

The second one tells us nothing about how many illegals are involved. No percentage. If I were an illegal who is now legal I'd be worried. That doesn't make the legal worker illegal.

I didn't read 3 or 4. If one of them is about Florida, those are legals on seasonal work permits who come up from So. America during their summer breaks to work in the hospitality sector all over FL during our winter.
