SES-9 Launch [CBD]

Hey....this is just cool stuff.

No politics if you can help it.

Videos under the fold.....

Addendum: If it's a scrub, then all bets are off and you can talk about presidential erotica (check the book thread) and lutefisk and whatever your psychotic minds can come up with.....

And another one....

19 I remember sitting out in lawn chairs with my angel, the Future Empress, one clear, warm evening, in Dripping Springs. The skies are very dark out that way, and you can see quite a bit of the heavens. She saw her first meteor, and we both watched in stunned silence as a satellite slowly crawled across the night sky.

Comes Spring, taking her out to Big Bend - the poor dear has never seen the Milky Way before.

20 Oh, was that tonight ?

Posted by: Mario's Powerboat at February 28, 2016 06:51 PM (VHRk+)

21 It's apparently not scrubbed at the moment.

But this latest version of Falcon 9 uses supercooled liquid oxygen to boost performance, and it's loaded into the rocket at the last minute. So any delay means the LOX is warming, and increases the chances for a scrub.

Posted by: rickl at February 28, 2016 06:53 PM (sdi6R)

22 I remember the first time I saw both the Milky Way and my first satellite. It was in Mineral King Park in California. In the Midwest we never had such crystal clear skies and it blew my little mind.

The herbicide committed at the campfire probably opened the doors of perception a wee bit.

The best time is just before dawn or a hour after sunset. You put in where your viewing and it tells direction (nsew) degrees above horizon to start and end and time.

Weird noises that no one will explain, noises that will make news because no one has ever heard those kinds of noises in the US for years and years. And those jobs will be union jobs, with good union benefits and good union pensions, because Trump knows how to work with organized labor. It will be exciting, and America will be grate again.

121 106 I remember them bringing TVs into the classroom in elementary school to watch the Gemini and early Apollo launches.

Had a General Dynamics rocket engineer teach an "enrichment" evening class in 5th or 6th grade. Was great. Actually learned (and since forgot) the basic principles of rocket design, thrust and gravity, propulsion in a vacuum, etc. Of course at a young person's level, but still.

Good times. In many ways.

TOTALLY agree. That's the movie I'd show to silent movie first-timers. Metropolis is too stylized, and the pacing too slow for people who aren't used to it. But Spies rocks along at a real fast clip, there are lots of cliffhanger moments and plot twists to hold the attention. And it's more modern in a way, not such a prisoner of the 1920s. That standing up scene was a terrific twist, but nothing had me prepared for the scene in Jason's office when they find out who Agent 719 is! That is pure genius.

Picked up a minimally sporterized Remington 1917 Enfield in 30-06. Made in 1918. The bore is clean and the rifling sharp. This isn't a collectible. It will be my 30-06 cast bullet rifle with that strong Enfield action. The low number '03 Springfield may become a wall hanger.

220 IG - thanks. Yep, this is the 2nd time around this block. Gunsmith put in new bushings last time - this may be the one out of 4 that he didn't replace. I am very careful with the screw-tightening because of this issue. Hence my rage. Ordered another set of new bushings - if a new one threads into the frame easily, I'll do it, otherwise back to the gunsmith.

But I'd call this a pretty bad design flaw in the 1911. Own/familiar with lots of other firearms, only one where this is an issue.

Hayden is vague to me, but I seem to recall he fits right in with the long string of very mediocre intel chiefs going back ..... well, won't finish that. Gets awkward.

Perhaps the good general could recall that highly sensitive, compartmented/code word programs were blown by so-called professionals in the community under Bush. Ya know, the sort of stuff Dem Secs of State keep on their Facebook account. But it was only war-time operational intel gathering, directly related to saving lives and winning a war, that was involved, so no biggy.

I guess the Dems and other GOP candidates should now vie with each other to denounce Hayden's stupid lunacy - and then be condemned if their denunciations aren't strident enough?

I thought it was '78 or '79, but recall the WaPo having a story about "UFO" incidents, simultaneously, at numerous SAC and NATO airbases one time back then. Naturally details are vague, but the reason it was interesting (and made it into an MSM story) was that several of the incidents seemed real enough to the military that fighters were scrambled, base security was put into war-time mode, and other fairly serious/expensive steps were taken.

Then - poof. Have never heard of it again. At the time of course all the buzz was about possible Soviet links to whatever was believed to have been seen/detected. But it also occurred at several bases across two continents, within hours.

294 Rewatching the video from tonight's launch attempt, it looks like something was burning at the base of the rocket for some time after the engines shut down. That doesn't look right. Shutdown was a good idea.

Well, it wasn't anybody's "idea", exactly. Shutdown was commanded by the flight computer, which sensed that something wasn't quite right.

296 If the Oscar presentation was hit by a meteor

it would probably be an overall gain for this

country.

297 Rhomboid, Weasel, et al., Thanks for the encouragement. I exaggerated about the 03 being a wall hanger. (I've done the research and that 'low number' boogie man is a bunch of crap perpetuated for decades. Col. Hatcher's report proved that.) I worked up a mild cast bullet load for it that is good for 2 to 3 inch groups at 150 yards from a solid bench rest with the iron sights. (If I'm having a good day.) I hope to use the Enfield to experiment more. I save the 150 grain jacketed bullets for the regulation Garand loads. Good point about the glasses but my regular glasses have safety lenses. With my eyes, if I don't have my glasses I can't even see the trigger.

I've picked up old military surplus rifles over the last 30 years, usually in 'as issued' condition. I like to come up with comfortable cast bullet loads for them just to see what I can do. If I ever start hunting again, unlikely, it would be with muzzle loaders. Love the history, the quality of manufacture, and the accuracy potential with these old guns.

298 I love the old martial arms. I always wonder where they have Seen service over the years.

299 Apparently so did David Duke. You win some, you lose some.

But only one did side by side with the endorsee, in front of 30,000 plus people.

Claimed it was the biggest crowd of the entire campaign.
