Absolutely amazing. On the cable nets now.

Rubio makes headway with mocking Trump and then Trump and Christie just STOMP on it.

6 Yeah, Christie's endorsement sure matters a hell of a lot to me. They'd have been selling lift tickets in Hell before I'd consider voting for him; does he think I can who he'd vote for, now that he FAILED IN HIS OWN MISERABLE, FEEBLE ATTEMPT TO RUN FOR THE OFFICE?

Sorry about the outburst. Thanks, no thanks, fatboy.

14 Curious if this may be Trump's pick for VP? He did say a few weeks' back that he was considering choosing a 'politician.' And now that Christie has talked about how he and Trump have been friends 'for years,' it makes me wonder.

Honestly, that would be a great match up. I like Christie. He can be brutal and in your face, which is a Trump quality that is working for them. I'm not 100% in love with everything Christie has done in his time as governor, but he sure knows how to bring it in a debate.

Why do you keep spouting untruths? Do you really think that Trump would talk about free market principles, the insurance lobbyists writing the ACA and other laws, and getting rid of Obamacare only to NOT do it? You are delusional. This is the man who likes to win. Likes to have people love him. Wants America to 'win.' Why in the heck would Trump want to sail into office on a cloud of support only to rain all over his voters? That is just nonsense.

Same goes for increasing the fed. gov't. His son, Eric, has talked about how he will bring business principles into the gov't and knows how to make a business lean and mean.

Stop the fear mongering.

82 An endorsement of Trump by Christie, by all rights, should be the end of their respective political careers.

But sadly, owing to the lemmingosity of great portions of the voting populace, it won't.

They say a Nation has plenty of ruin in it.

But these bastards seem to think it's their job to plump the depths of just how much ruin is to be found.

If only they'd have started with a mirror, their questions would've been answered in full.

104 This was obvious in the last debate when Christie human-grenaded himself and destroyed Rubio single-handedly.

Also, for those snarking here in this forum, of course it won't do much to change minds here, this endorsement is meant to hurt Marco/the Establishment.

115 I don't suspect that at all. Christie and Trump
apparently have had a business/social relationship for years. Now
Christie sees that his buddy has a likely shot at the presidency. For
someone as politically opportunistic as Christie, he would be crazy not
to cash in on the existing relationship if there's a good chance that it
will lead to bigger and better things for him.

The YouTube channel Game Theory (which usually does over-thinking essays on video games) has a recent video about the soecific ways Trump is running his campaign as a reality tv show. Nothing he says seems obviously wrong and I was surprised at how neutral he kept the tone (since the assumption is that social media types are liberal). If anything, he rather slighted the dems which was nearly shocking.

2. He will keep and expand ObamaCare. He says he wants to "replace" ObamaCare, but he says often he wants to expand the single payer component. It will be a larger version of what already exists, in the Trump administration. He is pretty darn clear on this.

3. He will fund Planned Parenthood. He said this last night most recently, but he says it all the time.

4. He will cut the Defense budget and expand Social Security and Medicare. He keeps promising his "plans" on these issue (#twoweeks) but the general statements here are his themes. He says both of these frequently, most recently saying he wants to improve SS and Medicare in the last debate before last night, when directly asked. 217 owing to the lemmingosity of great portions of the voting populace, it won't.

====

It might help you greatly to look at it in a historical context, rather than doom doom doomy doom.

The debates are a relic of the past and are largely seen as such. Political junkies watch them only sometimes, most of the population do not.

I think the closest imperfect parallel is 1960, JFK vs. Nixon, though. In that debate the ones who heard it on radio thought Nixon won while the ones who saw it thought JFK won. It was the first election that TV played a decisive role.

We're now in a cauldron where TV+Internet is the major factor. First election that mattered in was Obama but that still wasn't fully exploited at the time. For the GOP it has not played a major role until now.

So you really do have to sit back and reflect on what the various camps are seeing through their screens. Where do they go, what language do they use, or is used against them. Why are the voters as wound up as they are.

Personally, I believe the GOP and the Pundit class have *badly* mismanaged every aspect of this dynamic for this cycle, and perhaps going forward for about a decade.

Even if we take the court at its word, that abortion is a matter of privacy, we should then extend the argument to the logical conclusion that private funds, then, should subsidize this choice rather than the half billion dollars given to abortion providers every year by Congress. Public funding of abortion providers is an insult to people of conscience at the least and an affront to good governance at best."

Well, it turns out now that the dust has settled that Shit Midas did it again, and among the "jihadis" were kidnapped Serbian diplomats who were all killed by the U.S. strike.

The Russians are traditionally historically close to the Serbs. They will have been trying to find those diplomats and get them out safely via special ops. Instead, Obama stupidly jumped the gun.

Putin will respond. Skilled judoka and chess player that he is, it will probably be on some shadowy obscure vector that the checkers-playing Obama can't even perceive, but that will nevertheless produce damaging retaliation against U.S. interests.

==========

No, redbanzi, they got JOBS. They got good paying

jobs that they lost when the system broke down. All that pork that

people hate? A lot of that was local jobs. You can ignore it and dislike

it, but people are gonna vote for their own self interest. The system

worked when the politicians had to consider their constituients. When

they decided to just bring in a few million illegals, the jobs went away

and people got angry.

Most voters do not give a damn about political theory. They aren't

True Conservatives, looking for the perfect candidate. They just want

someone to fix things so they can have a decent life. That's why

immigration is the big issue. They see what has happened here and what

is happening in Europe. They see the chance for a good life slipping

away. THAT is the concern. It's pretty simple. And they also seem to be

very tired of pretty speakers. They would like some bluntness and no

political correctness.

Posted by: notsothoreau at February 26, 2016 01:17 PM (5HBd1)

No
I am not wrong... for every "winner" Scoop Jackson got to choose, there
were numerous citizens who lost... numerous citizens who were worse off
because politicians though "some animals are more equal than others".

Political
theory matters not because it is pretty in the abstract but because it
describes the realistic "best" and most fair efficiency for people in
the real world. Something conservatives know that never penetrates the
skulls of progressives is this: a theory is only as good as its practice
and realization in the world.

- a Cuban-American Senator who has won many of the most important cases in front of the SCOTUS argued in the past dozen years

and we're gonna run a fucking Northeast liberal ticket

At least as a Cruz supporter I have not fallen in love and keep him and all pols at arms length, I do not see this with Trump supporters. He has a track record just like all the other candidates, it just took a different route. It's not hard to see him for what he is (left of center). Well, as a practical matter, any approach to the illegal immigrant problem that features "self-deportation" is also going to entail a de-facto "touchback amnesty". How could it be otherwise? If an illegal has been living in the country for X number of years, and never had any interaction with government agencies under his own name, and then leaves of his own volition, it's as if he never existed at all. So there's no reason he could not apply to immigrate under his own name, since there's no adverse record under that name in U.S. gov't files.

I guess you could call the above scenario the "weak form" of touchback amnesty, as it requires no positive declaration on the part of the U.S. government to be in effect.

And I could posit a "strong form" of touchback amnesty, wherein illegal aliens would be given a preferred place in the queue in exchange for coming out of the shadows, admitting their illegal status, and then self-deporting. That would be wrong, and eminently unfair to all legal immigrants, both past and future.

Unfortunately, the PP issue that Cruz is constantly bringing up as one of his "I will do this" will only be able to be done via a budget. And the Dems will bring budget negotiations to a halt, and threaten to "shut the gov. down" until PP is fully funded.

Trump knows this as well as the GOP congress does.

If Cruz were to EO that funding be removed from PP, the Dems would go to court immediately citing that Congress had specifically funded PP and the exec. branch cannot remove the funding. I appreciate that Cruz is campaigning on this, but it is simply political wistful thinking. Until we have a congress that has a plurality of backbone and not the Republican squishes, this issue is simply a distraction.

Yes, he is rebranding the GOP into what right-of-center parties are in Europe: explicitly nationalist and nevertheless accepts all of the central premises of the liberal welfare state, just promises to manage it better.
So we will have:
Democrats: Free shit for everyone!
Republicans: Free shit for Americans!
what's missing of course is fiscal sanity...

428 And I could posit a "strong form" of touchback amnesty, wherein illegal aliens would be given a preferred place in the queue in exchange for coming out of the shadows, admitting their illegal status, and then self-deporting. That would be wrong, and eminently unfair to all legal immigrants, both past and future.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 26, 2016 01:40 PM (afR/C)

Not sure how many here understand that according to our immigration laws, if someone is caught here as an illegal, whether it was sneaking in or overstaying a visa, even if we deport them, our laws permit them to reapply for a visa or reentry. They have to wait a predetermined number of years( I think it is five) before they can reapply, but they are not barred from ever reentering the USA.
Trump is not proposing something new. He is simply proposing that we actually enforce the laws on the books. And stop making up excuses as to why we cannot deport or enforce the laws.

438 Unfortunately, the PP issue that Cruz is constantly
bringing up as one of his "I will do this" will only be able to be done
via a budget. And the Dems will bring budget negotiations to a halt, and
threaten to "shut the gov. down" until PP is fully funded.

Trump knows this as well as the GOP congress does.

If Cruz were to EO that funding be removed from PP, the Dems would
go to court immediately citing that Congress had specifically funded PP
and the exec. branch cannot remove the funding. I appreciate that Cruz
is campaigning on this, but it is simply political wistful thinking.
Until we have a congress that has a plurality of backbone and not the
Republican squishes, this issue is simply a distraction.

I knew about it/read about it a few years ago. Trump has done a tremendous amount of business in NJ over the years. He and Christierun in the same circles. Mary Pat and Melania are close friends--as strange as that might seem when you visualize the two of them together. Mary Pat isn't exactly what you'd call an attractive woman, although she's said to have a quick mind and a great personality (not being facetious).

That said, I wonder if Trump makes 'Look at that face!' remarks whenever he encounters Christie's wife.

If I may extend this by pointing out an uncomfortable fact?

There was more of this in the "Tea Parties" than anyone cared to admit.

For every ideological and philosophical conservative, it always seemed like there were five people who just wanted back the "good deal" where government seemed to work for them. Not a smaller one, just one they benefited from.

In that light, as much as we may hate to admit it, you can draw a straight line from 2010 to 2016.

It was really weird watching Rubio this morning. For some reason CBSN (streaming) devoted about a half hour to Mario who was doing nothing but slamming Trump in the most juvenile fashion imaginable. Spelling in tweets, his Wharton education, sweat, mirror, etc.

It just seemed like petty stuff. Made me think even less of Rubio - if that's possible.

Posted by: mega machines at February 26, 2016 02:04 PM (fbovC)

466 That assumes two things: 1) A Facebook post from two weeks ago really represents a change in Trump's position of decades, and 2) he wouldn't (perhaps even willfully) allow himself to be convinced that as long as PP swears it doesn't use the public money for abortion, but for the supposed good stuff that he can't help but mention ad nauseam, that's an acceptable compromise deal.

Posted by: bagodonuts at February 26, 2016 01:32 PM (2R6mJ)

Put yourself in Trump's shoes for a moment. You realize that for the LIV Left, abortion is virtually a sacrament? Any move by a candidate to really shut down PP would bring on a shit-storm from the Left. And there's no question that Trump wants to be a cross-over candidate, so shutting down PP is a third rail that he must not touch if he wants those crossover votes.

He's really not running as a conservative. More as a pragmatic centrist who can solve problems, and who has a couple of issues in common with conservatives, border security being #1. So don't go looking for conservative purity. It ain't there.

True enough. But remember, government is already big. Yuuuge, even. Turning it to work "for" us, instead of against us, might be a more attainable goal than immediately trying to reduce its size. Because if you attack government directly, not only do the OTHERS rebel, because they see their bennies being snatched away, but the vast drones of government workers also will fight you, because careers, pensions, etc.
