Trump and the Rise of the Unprotected

Why political professionals are struggling to make sense of the world they created.

I know most people here do not like Peggy, but you will like this - even if she was a traitor, she is starting to sound like a Moron.

And between the lines, she's giving you reason to continue to fight for the 2nd Amendment, whether she knows it or not. It's almost like a hint of her viewing the "burn it down" mentality.

Good for her, for a change.

She calls those defying what we are seeing in America "normal people" and "unprotected." She's got that right.

1 - Let Trump get out in front, to be taken down by the establishment pack. (Romney's tax thingie is the first real shot at him. Many more to come.)

77 Ted and Marco should agree -

One of them gets the first and fourth term as President, and then takes term two and three as VP while the other serves as President. That way, one gets the win of being first in the office and setting the agenda, while the other gets eight years in a row to make things happen.

79 FOX keeps showing the clip where Trump says "government would pay", but they clip out just those words, cut off the rest of the sentence.

He had just talked about not letting people die in the street, so it takes a little more context to claim those three words were in the context of socialized medicine for all. Especially when he says there are private plans and he'd enable buying across state lines, enabling much more competition. Trump also points out how Obamacare was influenced/written by the insurance lobbyists.

When they start not just going out of context, but cutting sentences in half, of thirds, they are being too sneaky, by more than half.

My first thought was a Buddhist offering from the monk on the right. (The monk looking for a place to put xis offering.) I didn't even see the person on the left.

Once the person in the chair on the left appeared, that made the highlights (which I thought were candles) all weird.

And Cruz will get steamrolled. The dems and the GOPe hate him.

And they WILL have enough to override a veto. Every. Time.

THAT is why the GOPe HAS to be destroyed. And that is why I would give anything for a Trump/Cruz 2016 ticket.
Because in 4 or 8 years, Cruz would be able to effect real change. But he is not going to be able to do it on his own.

90 Composition of the painting strikes me as somewhat cramped, and the nearly dead-center placement of the flowers (or any focal point object in any painting) betrays the talented amateur or the self-taught professional. Really like the color palette, though. That coral cushion was no easy trick.

111 IN RE: Rubio planning for contested convention.

It is an admission that there is no clear path to a majority for Rubio, and that at some point the backroom wheeling and dealing would be needed to get him the nomination. It is not a good thing to have to admit, but it makes sense to plan for it - shows someone is not engaging in wishful thinking.

It also would be a nightmare, because a contested convention means that the party is split and that the split is deep and emotional.* No one would go away happy, some very large group would go away feeling betrayed, and a party unified on the surface only would not be a good thing to take into a general election.

*Political junkies would like to see it because they are political junkies and things like that fascinate them. Others wouldn't be so enthusiastic.

Because the sheer intensity of the contempt for his supporters, both from left and right, drives them underground. For instance, the pic in my nick (give it a click) was something I put in there in Sept. or Oct. while I was moderately Trump-curious.

In the intervening weeks I hedged all my Trumpist tendencies and even convinced myself I was pro-Cruz (and I do like Cruz). I walked softly here on the blog.

The smug self-righteousness you just displayed - I believe Ace called it "sneering" last week - is part of what drives the Trump support. I think you could bleed a lot of Trump's support away if you would listen respectfully to the concerns of his supporters and start some movement in the House and Senate to address those concerns.

People do not like to be feel like they are being used, and the GOPe has done a lot of that, promising big and delivering nothing. A coalition cannot endure if one part of it is given nothing but the brush-off.

I don't expect that will change until a complete disaster befalls the GOP once more.

GoK-no, that's creepy. Don't feel bad about saying something is creepy when it is. He is trying to make you feel guilty, and succeeded.

He may be a nice old man, he certainly isn't acting like it.

I had a similar situation before I left facebook, with a friend of a dear friend. We went to the same church, etc, and she started off innocuously, and then her posts became, well, creepy. Weirdly sexual in nature, and when I asked if someone had perhaps hijacked her account, she said no, and what was my problem. It is time to hit unfriend, when someone acts in a way that makes you feel preyed upon.

284 ...Trump has more than telegraphed that he is Democrat running as a Republican...

I don't believe Mitt or McCain are more Republican than Trump unless you think legalizing illegals is an R tenant. And George "no new taxes" had a better D record than Bill "my fellow Republicans". W might be a better R but the Medicare Prescription weakens that argument. Establishments (crony capitalist or crony socialist) versus bases. R and D no longer represent the average person. Trump is amazingly viewed as a man of the people. Reality TV.

285 If Trump goes onto win the nomination, and Presidency, but then turns out exactly like what many of us expect him to be, we will make it know. Gloating will be our right.
Conversely, if he does change things and turns out how you expect him to be, you should gloat loudly and often. Such will be your right.
Posted by: SH at February 26, 2016 11:44 AM (gmeXX)

The difference is that if Trump turns out to be a fake, everything will look like it has for the last 7 years, and you'll be gloating without anything to hang your hat on. If Trump turns out to be for real, he'll do all the gloating for us - unlike the Republican party, which takes all the benefits of the power we've handed it but puts the onus of defending it squarely on us, on our own personal reputations, with no intention of lifting a finger to actually help its base.

It's called leadership. To a feckless, drug-addled nation latched firmly to the gov't teat, real leadership, and real responsibility, are frightening. Sorry.

I can't justify Trump's actions based on the Nation Review Stylebook Rubric, I just know he's closer to what we need than anybody else in the race. Sorry.

292 We know that amnesty leads to an insurmountable Dem majority. The conservatives' unwillingness to game the system makes it a defensive game that we will eventually lose. We've chosen failure.

Better to talk about raising the voting age to 35, and whatever other things will break in our favor. It isn't greedy when good things happen. Sleazy politics or tell the grand-kids to tighten their belt, pick one. What about a states' convention to balance the budget? Kill the Dem gravy train, and watch their high convictions melt like cardboard in the rain.

Pick battles like these, be willing to talk about them for ten years. Our opponents talked for ten years about gay marriage, a political non-starter, and then it happened. Garbage activism or tell the grand-kids to tighten their belt, pick one.

Were you paid by someone to put the back up of the Trump supporters? Because you certainly are.

You are trying to sell a product, say a soda pop. Do you go on about how much better your product is and all sorts of great imagery, or do just get right down in there and announce that anyone who drinks a competing soda pop is an imbecile who should be institutionalized?

Selling a candidate shouldn't be too much different and all I am hearing are people who claim to be opposed to Trump providing him with support by insulting his supporters.

Makes no sense to me at all.

Now, GoK is contemptuous of the attitude that a solid majority of voters have, i.e., the status signaling that is in play here. So what? The motives of the FSA are equally contemptible, but they are very REAL.

To put it succinctly, Trump is an embarrassment.
People are terrified of being embarrassed.

There are also problems with his policy preferences, his wild statements, and the fact that he is apparently ignorant on so many subjects, etc., etc.

375 Terribly sad news in my "community" today. The owner of our local bakery has passed away, and not from a bakery-related ailment. Nobody ever went to a franchise doughnut shop if they were from here.

His son is in the business, but the old man (well, 75) did the business planning and, more importantly I'm afraid, the machine repair. Bakery machinery is a specialized field, and some of theirs is classic. Vintage. Iconic. Old.

There are plenty of "bakery workers" hanging around but they are ex-Wonder Bread and probably not willing to do the Gates of Vienna hours of a real baker. Neighbors are worried whether he can make a go of it.

I never eat doughnuts (liar) and I will miss him like a front tooth. Some others will be truly devastated. Plus there is the quandary of what to send for the funeral luncheon. He was best friends with the other private baker in town, so I guess the cake is right out.

Men who like power like using power. Trump strikes me as a guy who will absolutely use powers not granted to him by the constitution. Since our feckless Congress has chosen to allow a sitting President to get away with everything under the sun, Trump will have every right now to do the same.

Doesn't anyone believe Buckley's quote about the faculty of Harvard vs the first 400 people in the phonebook? Isn't the whole point of America that, at the end of the day, though they're rough and uncouth and not somebody you'd necessarily want in your parlor every weekend, the people of the country are what make it great?

I think he'd lost to Hillary or Bernie too, but how would Trump
getting the nomination not send a message to the GOPe that they need to
shape up? They could spin it back as vindication, but that wouldn't
convince Trump supporters much I think.

GOPe is perfectly happy losing. They still get the same perks and will justify themselves that we are all just too stupid to understand the complexity of their parliamentary maneuvers. Tiresome kabuki. I'm a Cruzer and will make my decisions for the general depending on other factors.

If the peasants bow down again to the GOPe, then the GOPe wins.

That's quite a dilemma there.

A republican majority Senate is itching to cave to JEF right now.

Tell me again how we we'll "lose the Supreme Court" if the peasants fail to bow down to the GOPe.

We have $20 TRILLION in debt that we are never going to pay a dime of principle on and we continue making "interest only" payments. Not a single candidate is talking about cutting or addressing any of these issues.

And that book he read wasn't by Rommel, it was by Rommel's boss.
(Other than that, how was the movie?)

Within his field and at his level, he was pretty damn good. Like Rommel, he's famous as an armor commander, when in fact his strong suit was the integration of armor with other arms. Really good at anti-armor, which you had to do a lot.

I just wonder what took them so long.

If they can't beat Trump, then how are they going to beat Hillary or Bernie?

Are they addressing any of the concerns of Trump's supporters in order to peel any away, or are they concentrating on defending their hold on their particular niche of the Republican electorate?

If it is just the latter then they are doomed, you have to appeal to more than just a niche group - you can't be the evangelical's candidate or the chamber of commerce's candidate solely.

I believe that you have to do the coalition building in the primary; if you can't do it there then you are not going to suddenly turn the magic on in the general and do it there.

Trump is a one off who just happens to have arrived at exactly the right time. He's not leading some movement because he has no platform other than a wall.

Trump also started making noises during the 2012 election which not many people remember because he got almost zero traction. He didn't change, the times did. The vast majority of Trump supporters I have encountered don't even try to defend his flip flopping all over the map history, they just want to stick it to the establishment.

526 (Other than that, how was the movie?)

Patton's memoir "War As I Knew It" wasn't published until 1976, years after the movie, but was clearly the basis for much of the movie.

One of the things that struck me on reading it was how Hollywood underplayed, rather than overplayed some of the events.

In the movie when the 101st gets surrounded (shortly before Christmas) all the other commanders are saying "I can get there by late February" and such, and Patton grandstands by saying "I can pivot and get there in three days". It looks like braggadocio.

But he wasn't surprised, he was planning in advance. In the memoir - based on his diary - he writes "if Rundstedt (?) breaks through, as I expect him to..."

He had it gamed out before there was an encirclement to respond to.

If you're still here, consider taking a baked ham or pot roast to the family, if they need food for the wake. If there is a church or family member handling it, give them a call or shoot them an email to see what they need.

Or, in a couple of weeks, stop by the house with said ham/roast/chicken, and a card. Because that's when the grief really hits-after the funeral, and the rushing around witih "death" planning. When you have a minute to breathe, and ask them a question, and they aren't there. That's when the family will really need a hug and a meal.

543 A couple of quick thoughts:

I am starting to agree with the bloggers that say the Conservative movement is dead. Reagan was governor when I lived in CA in the 70s. Voters are not looking for his second coming. You are going to have to come up with a new conservative movement.

Voters would like to see some things get done. Running a campaign that says you are not going to compromise, means you are not going to be able to do anything. Kasich, interestingly, was pretty good on this last night (and I expect a bump in the polls for him.) You can sneer at deal making but that used to be the way that the country moved forward.

I know this will be unpopular, but Cruz is a regional politician. Like Walker and Jindal, he doesn't translate well on the national stage. He should be running well ahead of a weasel like Rubio, but he isn't.

And last, are you really saying that only professional politicians should run for office? I seem to remember a lot of discussion about how we needed to get away from that. I especially am tired of Harvard educated lawyers. I just am and I don't care how good their politics are. I want to see something different, because they've had a big hand in why our country is in such bad shape.

The had to go to the store and there were two little twin boys of about three there with their mother. They had the brightest dark eyes and red cheeks and were wearing identical little blue dog hats "Blue Clues"? and one of them was pointing and saying, "What is that, Mommy". That's federal, state, county & city, combined. When one of them goes bankrupt, who do they look to? The feds.
There are 5,000 (and change) counties in the US. If every one of them was $1 million underfunded, how much is that?
And you don't think that Los Angels county is only 1 million underfunded, do you?

Theory: Rubio sold himself as being conservative and as soon as he was elected hopped on to the Amnesty Bandwagon.

Trump is a businessman and never promised he did anything but pursue the best deal as a businessman. His anti-illegal stance is actually against his interest.

Rubio took a stance and betrayed it as soon as it was convenient. Trump is taking a stance that is more principled than past behavior - no betrayal involved - yet.

What I really want to see is if the USS Trump's missile batteries go nuclear on Rubio after the debate. He's been great at deflecting and defeating criticism, but he's never dealt with anything of last night's magnitude yet.

Here's to hoping he tries to blow up Rubio and Cruz somehow benefits.

Not that I mind Trump.

It also does not show much potential as an airliner (although a radar-invisible airliner could be a lot of fun). In other words, Boeing didn't get the job.

The Air Force must therefore be rolled back into the Army, right after we kill all the lawyers and close those damned Philosophy departments. Now, regular program.

Jackson served for all but the last three years of his Senate tenure with Democratic colleague Warren G. Magnuson. Washington received nearly one sixth of public works appropriations, even though it ranked 23rd in population.

No I am not wrong... for every "winner" Scoop Jackson got to choose, there were numerous citizens who lost... numerous citizens who were worse off because politicians though "some animals are more equal than others".

Political theory matters not because it is pretty in the abstract but because it describes the realistic "best" and most fair efficiency for people in the real world. Something conservatives know that never penetrates the skulls of progressives is this: a theory is only as good as its practice and realization in the world.
