He had just talked about not letting people die in the street, so it takes a little more context to claim those three words were in the context of socialized medicine for all. Especially when he says there are private plans and he'd enable buying across state lines, enabling much more competition. Trump also points out how Obamacare was influenced/written by the insurance lobbyists.
When they start not just going out of context, but cutting sentences in half, of thirds, they are being too sneaky, by more than half.

It is an admission that there is no clear path to a majority for Rubio, and that at some point the backroom wheeling and dealing would be needed to get him the nomination. It is not a good thing to have to admit, but it makes sense to plan for it - shows someone is not engaging in wishful thinking.
It also would be a nightmare, because a contested convention means that the party is split and that the split is deep and emotional.* No one would go away happy, some very large group would go away feeling betrayed, and a party unified on the surface only would not be a good thing to take into a general election.
*Political junkies would like to see it because they are political junkies and things like that fascinate them. Others wouldn't be so enthusiastic.

I'm no Trump supporter but it seems to me Trump has cobbled together a coalition of frustrated voters from all walks of life, Cons, blue dogs, casuals, etc. I felt the same way you did. I just think the toxic mix of 7 years of Obama and the GOPe flat out refusing to acknowledge the part of the base that delivered them back into power was the breaking point.
I totally agree with them as I am one also. I'm with you as I don't think Trump is the right tool to get the job done, but he sure did move the Overton Window.

I think you could bleed a lot of Trump's support away if you would listen respectfully to the concerns of his supporters and start some movement in the House and Senate to address those concerns.
People do not like to be feel like they are being used, and the GOPe has done a lot of that, promising big and delivering nothing. A coalition cannot endure if one part of it is given nothing but the brush-off.

That aversion grows stronger every day. I grew up in a very politicized household. The kitchen table in our stepfather's house after my mother remarried was a debate forum.He encouraged discussion and debate--mainly to sharpen us, I think.
Anyway,I'm a news junkie and a history buff and something of a political animal but I think after this election cycle, whatever the result, I'm going to get away from politics and thinking about politics and focus on cultivating my own garden, as Voltaire might put it. And given the way things are going, I'm also definitely going to buy more ammo.

Cruz supporters seem very divided. I am of the "I want Cruz, but if I can't have him the DOPe gets Trump" view, but a decent sized group of others clearly see Trump as too big a threat to do that. Larry Corriea and Sarah Hoyt both belong to that group and their opinion weighs far heavier with me than any *professional* political commenter. I expect life to suck for the foreseeable future.

I had a similar situation before I left facebook, with a friend of a dear friend. We went to the same church, etc, and she started off innocuously, and then her posts became, well, creepy. Weirdly sexual in nature, and when I asked if someone had perhaps hijacked her account, she said no, and what was my problem. It is time to hit unfriend, when someone acts in a way that makes you feel preyed upon.

Yeah, it makes me generally steer clear of the comments these days.
In fairness, ace doesn't help with his own sneering towards Rubio's supporters. And I'm pretty sympathetic with ace's position. I don't mind sneering at the candidate, but sneering/condescending/insulting supporters is pretty offputting.
Especially given the fact that none of these candidates is really too far above the other.

I don't believe Mitt or McCain are more Republican than Trump unless you think legalizing illegals is an R tenant. And George "no new taxes" had a better D record than Bill "my fellow Republicans". W might be a better R but the Medicare Prescription weakens that argument. Establishments (crony capitalist or crony socialist) versus bases. R and D no longer represent the average person. The difference is that if Trump turns out to be a fake, everything will look like it has for the last 7 years, and you'll be gloating without anything to hang your hat on. If Trump turns out to be for real, he'll do all the gloating for us - unlike the Republican party, which takes all the benefits of the power we've handed it but puts the onus of defending it squarely on us, on our own personal reputations, with no intention of lifting a finger to actually help its base.
It's called leadership. To a feckless, drug-addled nation latched firmly to the gov't teat, real leadership, and real responsibility, are frightening. Sorry.
I can't justify Trump's actions based on the Nation Review Stylebook Rubric, I just know he's closer to what we need than anybody else in the race. Sorry.

Yes, the beginning of my break with the DOPe was when "our" "conservative" candidate was a guy who *admitted* to having repeatedly considered joining the dems. When his mom said "Who else are they going to vote for?" I decided that if I wanted to be an apparatchik I'd be a dem (and that was out of the question). Since I felt ill trying to vote for the VP candidate hoping the *actual* candidate died, I voted for Allen Keyes who was on the CO ballot.

His son is in the business, but the old man (well, 75) did the business planning and, more importantly I'm afraid, the machine repair. Bakery machinery is a specialized field, and some of theirs is classic. Vintage. Iconic. Old.
There are plenty of "bakery workers" hanging around but they are ex-Wonder Bread and probably not willing to do the Gates of Vienna hours of a real baker. Neighbors are worried whether he can make a go of it.
I never eat doughnuts (liar) and I will miss him like a front tooth. Some others will be truly devastated. Plus there is the quandary of what to send for the funeral luncheon. He was best friends with the other private baker in town, so I guess the cake is right out.

I don't think rank and file Republicans are going to sit out and let Hillary Clinton be elected. And I don't think Hillary is going to get turnout, especially if she's gaming the system against young voters and their Bern preference.

If my concerns are valid about Trump, (that he is far more progressive than he is conservative and he's just simply lying his ass off to get elected), Trump can do as much or more damage in the White House as Obama has wrought.
Men who like power like using power. Trump strikes me as a guy who will absolutely use powers not granted to him by the constitution. Since our feckless Congress has chosen to allow a sitting President to get away with everything under the sun, Trump will have every right now to do the same.

Anyone who likes Trump isn't going to be dissuaded by now (because if so, they'd have already been argued out of their position), and the people who don't like Trump certainly won't be either. I voted early yesterday and as I was checked in there was an islamic couple next to me also checking in
they had requested a mail in ballot, and they were trying to vote in early voting as well
the campaign workers patiently, and repeatedly, told them they could not do both. the couple seemed not to understand
now this is in Houston, where their is voter ID and they do check to make sure you dont vote twice

Yes. Having worked as an election clerk in Houston, the rule is, you must turn in your absentee ballot at the polls in order to vote in person. The absentee ballot is segregated and not counted, invalidated.

Were Trump to win (and he won't), he would become the face of 'Conservatism'. The media would seize on that and *never* let go.
I can only speak for myself, but I regard Trump is very nearly the antithesis of Conservatism. He would do such damage to the idea that recovery would take decades.
Contrasted with Trump, the two Bushes (condemned here regularly) were monuments to Constitutional Conservatism.

Yeah; Biggest laugh I've had all day-thinking of Trump and his great gravitas. Spouse didn't even watch the debate, but saw clips in a bagel shop. His reaction to Trumps's orange face and weird hair and exaggerated facial reactions-He laughed!. Gravitas is not the first thing he thought of, i expect. He said, "Well, he'll sure be entertaining as a President."

The difference is how close a race will it be.
If Trump absolutely gets slaughtered vs losing by 2-3 points it will be a much different conversation.
I do have a sliver of hope Trump brings a new coalition in, but I hate relying on people that have never bothered voting before. They always seem to have something better to do on Election Day.

If it's New Hope, that's the Delaware River. Looks about the right width at that point. There's a stream entering from the Jersey side. The Bridge Street bridge was built in 1904, so this wouldn't be downtown New Hope.
Probably north of town just below where the current 202 bridge is.

My final break with the DOPe was when they scheduled *this* round of debates in the same hostile venues as last time. I had already decided after '12 that debate scheduling was my test. If it is just the latter then they are doomed, you have to appeal to more than just a niche group - you can't be the evangelical's candidate or the chamber of commerce's candidate solely.
I believe that you have to do the coalition building in the primary; if you can't do it there then you are not going to suddenly turn the magic on in the general and do it there.

Trump is a one off who just happens to have arrived at exactly the right time. He's not leading some movement because he has no platform other than a wall.
Trump also started making noises during the 2012 election which not many people remember because he got almost zero traction. He didn't change, the times did. The vast majority of Trump supporters I have encountered don't even try to defend his flip flopping all over the map history, they just want to stick it to the establishment.
Trump has no coattails and I think there is a very good chance he gets schlonged in the general if he get the nod.

Patton's memoir "War As I Knew It" wasn't published until 1976, years after the movie, but was clearly the basis for much of the movie.
One of the things that struck me on reading it was how Hollywood underplayed, rather than overplayed some of the events.
In the movie when the 101st gets surrounded (shortly before Christmas) all the other commanders are saying "I can get there by late February" and such, and Patton grandstands by saying "I can pivot and get there in three days". It looks like braggadocio.
But he wasn't surprised, he was planning in advance. In the memoir - based on his diary - he writes "if Rundstedt (?) breaks through, as I expect him to..."
He had it gamed out before there was an encirclement to respond to.

I am starting to agree with the bloggers that say the Conservative movement is dead. Reagan was governor when I lived in CA in the 70s. Voters are not looking for his second coming. You are going to have to come up with a new conservative movement.
Voters would like to see some things get done. Running a campaign that says you are not going to compromise, means you are not going to be able to do anything. Kasich, interestingly, was pretty good on this last night (and I expect a bump in the polls for him.) You can sneer at deal making but that used to be the way that the country moved forward.
I know this will be unpopular, but Cruz is a regional politician. Like Walker and Jindal, he doesn't translate well on the national stage. He should be running well ahead of a weasel like Rubio, but he isn't.
And last, are you really saying that only professional politicians should run for office? I seem to remember a lot of discussion about how we needed to get away from that. I especially am tired of Harvard educated lawyers. I just am and I don't care how good their politics are. I want to see something different, because they've had a big hand in why our country is in such bad shape.

The had to go to the store and there were two little twin boys of about three there with their mother. Trump is a businessman and never promised he did anything but pursue the best deal as a businessman. His anti-illegal stance is actually against his interest.

I was a Walker supporter, now I am up in the air.* I do like to observe the game, and Trump makes the game interesting. Pointing out that you are not convincing his supporters but rather are setting them even firmer into his camp is an observation, not an endorsement of Donald Trump.
*I haven't come down yet. I could vote for any three of the front runners - Trump has to get more detailed and consistent with policies; Rubio needs to figure a way out from under Schumer's Amnesty; and Cruz has to become more than the evangelical candidate and pick up some common touch.

Jackson had enough pull to make sure they got contracts and people were employed. Republicans and Dems would "scratch each others backs" so to speak. Things went south when the Dems decided not to play.
It may not be a pure enough system for you. But there were benefits to the folks at the bottom. There aren't any now.

Most voters do not give a damn about political theory. They aren't True Conservatives, looking for the perfect candidate. They just want someone to fix things so they can have a decent life. That's why immigration is the big issue. They see what has happened here and what is happening in Europe. They see the chance for a good life slipping away. THAT is the concern. It's pretty simple. And they also seem to be very tired of pretty speakers. They would like some bluntness and no political correctness.

No I am not wrong... for every "winner" Scoop Jackson got to choose, there were numerous citizens who lost... numerous citizens who were worse off because politicians though "some animals are more equal than others".
Political theory matters not because it is pretty in the abstract but because it describes the realistic "best" and most fair efficiency for people in the real world. Something conservatives know that never penetrates the skulls of progressives is this: a theory is only as good as its practice and realization in the world.
