My Easy Embargo of Twitter

I've gone off Twitter. Or, I should say, I've stopped being a Twitter user, and user is the right word.

I didn't particularly wish to write this, because it's a bit silly, but I'll explain, because this seems to be of interest to my Twitter followers, and my Twitter critics, especially.

I'm going to write two posts: one, what my embargo consists of, and two, why I'm doing it.

This will just be the one explaining what I'm doing, rather than why.

I have never given this a name, but I'll call this the "easy embargo." For any health regimen to be effective (and cutting a useless, angry, stupid form of social media out of your life is a health regimen in itself), it has to be easy and livable.

There's no point planning a diet where you cut your food intake to 1000 calories a day, then you plan, based on that, losing four pounds a week.

I'll tell you how many pounds you'll lose on that diet: Four pounds, total, if you're lucky. Because your will last about 3-4 days on it. You'd be a tower of iron will if you lasted the whole week.

You won't last past that.

For some time, I've been doing an easy embargo of Disney/ABC/Marvel. What do I mean by "easy embargo" with respect to that?

Well, I'm embargoing them the easy way. But I'm not making promises I won't keep.

Look, I'm trying to hurt Disney and ABC (and Marvel, but just because it's owned by ABC). But I'm not trying to hurt myself.

I'm not going to hurt myself to hurt Disney/ABC. So if there's something I really, really, really want to see from this company, I'll see it. You can probably guess at what some of those things might be.

But if I'm eh on it, I won't.

And I absolutely won't promote it.

I haven't seen Star Wars VII. I'm eh on it. I imagine I will see it eventually, when I can pay Disney/ABC the least amount of money to see it legally, when it's on PPV or Netflix.

Assuming I do see it, I won't write a review of it. Unless I don't like it. In which case, I'll write a negative review.

I wouldn't lie about a movie. But I'm not obligated to write a review of a film, either. So if I like Star Wars VII, which I kind of assume I won't, I just won't say anything about it either way.

I don't promote these things. I stopped linking Star Wars and Marvel teaser trailers and the like.

This isn't a hard embargo. It's not hard in both senses of the world -- it's not hard as far as being absolute, and it's not hard as in requiring all that much effort from me.

It's easy on myself. If there's a Disney/ABC project I really want to see, I will see it.

But more and more people rely on free social media buzz to sell products. I won't give them that.

Similarly, I'm doing an easy embargo of Twitter. I have 47,000 followers. That's a pretty good number of followers. I see no reason why I should spite myself while I spite Twitter.

So I will promote my site on Twitter. I will use it, but I won't let it use me. I will use it as a soulless corporate branding device and promotional platform. If I write something I like, or if i wish to use my decent reach to promote, I'll do so.

What I won't do is provide them free content. Any platform requires content, after all. This site would be a much poorer experience were it not for the thousands of people commenting here, adding their own takes and opinions and diversions and links to stories.

It would just be one post from me or a coblogger every hour, and a lot of dead air.

That is what I intend to give twitter: A post I think deserves promotion, and then dead air.

What Twitter needs to be healthy, as any social media platform needs to be healthy, is a buzzy, vibrant atmosphere with lots of give and take. People agreeing with each other, people disagreeing with each other. And occasionally, the spectacle of a big fat fight and feud.

I'm not going to give them that any longer, partly because they're SJW censors and bad people, and only want my speech only to the extent it advances their purposes.

But partly because I've just decided it's an absolutely dreadful habit with no merit whatsoever, one which hurts the users life in every way possible, like smoking.

And just like smoking, there's a timesuck component. Smokers have to take breaks from work (or even from pleasure activities) to get their fix. So too do Twitter addicts (of which I was one).

So I've broken the habit. Partly out of protest, partly out of a simple realization that Twitter Isn't Cool, I've stopped using Twitter for the purposes it intends for me -- to provide them with links, observations, banter, the occasional spectacle of a Twitter fight -- you know, to help them populate their pointless corporate product with content --- and to use it exclusively for my own purposes: just to promote the blog.

Otherwise it's just going to be dead air.

And if a critic wants to respond to a link and headline to the site, well, he won't get the satisfaction of my reading him, because I won't. Or, if I inadvertently read it, I won't respond.

If he wants the satisfaction of insulting me and having that insult heard -- well, he'll just have to come here, to my platform.

I'm done with interacting on Twitter. There's no pleasure in having a conversation with a Censor breathing wetly on the back of your neck.

I'll write another post about The Easy Way to Quit Twitter, and seriously, it is easy as pie -- once you get out of the habit of checking Twitter, full of the guilt of the narcissist, to see if anyone responded to what you said or retweeted it (and let's face it, that's the only point of Twitter), it just goes away in seventy-two hours. You just don't care anymore.

But I'll write that later. For now, I'm getting back to things more important than Twitter: My blog, which is my actual job, and other things more interesting than checking my "Mentions" feed to get a minor jolt of sad validation from seeing that a tweet I wrote got 58 whole retweets and thereby "shaped the narrative" in some pitifully trivial way.

PS: As Twitter continues to lose users, as I expect they will, I imagine they will in fact be bossy and vindictive enough to start saying "Inactive users' accounts will be deactivated and reassigned to others," etc.

So part of the reason I will provide one or two posts a day is just to keep them from taking away my brand-name account and then, like a cybersquatter, threatening to assign it to someone else, including an enemy.

Does that seem far-fetched? Well, I also didn't expect Twitter to ban Anna Sarkeesian critic Stace McCain within days of Anna Sarkeesian joining the Ministry of Emotional Safety and Mental Hygiene.

I thought they'd be a bit more subtle about things than that.

But they weren't.

See? I'm not inactive. I'm giving you a tweet or two a day. What more can you ask?

PPS: As this post is of very limited interest to anyone not involved with Twitter, I'm starting on another one ASAP.

4 Ace,
I understand why you stopped using Twitter. I use it to try to make some LIVs wake up.

5 Ace, I've been on a ~1,000 to 1,200 calorie diet for three weeks and I've lost twelve pounds so far. So suck it.

6 Excellent strategy, Ace!

Screw twitter. Er, but not like in the circle-jerk kinda way that was being discussed in the last thread. Just metaphorically.

7 I'll take the contrarian point of view. Ace, your talent plays well on twitter, and you should continue to use the platform. Stand up for those of us in your audience who lack the wit and vocabulary and the pop culture knowledge. Stay on twitter and fight.

Don't let them get you down.

Don't let them silence your voice.

12 If Twitter is mistreating you, don't use it. I've largely moved away from Facebook because it's slowly becoming SJW central, too.

But conservative Twitter is a tiny, tiny drop in the bucket. No one should expect that the vast bulk of millions of people who use Twitter for stupid bullshit and don't have any political positions other than "gibs muh dat" will drop out in solidarity.

Twitter will go on, weaker and less influential perhaps - I understand that Instagram is where the cool kids are now - but it's going to take a long time for it to go the way of Myspace, and I bet it never will.

20 Yeah, the thing is, there's a hump with most things. Whether it's diet, exercise, or any other habit, getting past the second to fourth week is the tough part. Your body stops complaining after a while. Your mind stops obsessing about the food you aren't eating. You just get accustomed to the idea that you're eating less food.

23 the funny thing is that there are a bunch of people -- I call them Twitter-Proud -- who are all like "You'll be back" and "You posted a link to a site, you fail in your embargo!"

Even though I keep saying I will use the site to promote the blog.

They're Twitter-Proud -- they kind of sense this is a pointless and stupid thing, and they get kind of emotional about the idea of someone quitting it. Like it's a repudiation of themselves.

I notice smokers sometimes are a little too eager to offer a guy quitting smoking a cigarette too

88 >>>I've contemplated leaving Twitter. The hard part for me is that it is such an easy way to follow blogs and get news. I follow only about 20 accounts. I can scroll through my timeline and quickly get news and links to blog posts without having to go to all those sites. It's convenient.

what would be ideal for me is an extention that prevents me from *commenting* on twitter because it is useful for link-harvesting.

Another thing I'm going to use it for (with a separate, new account) is language-learning. it's very good for that. It's part of how I learned french, just seeing french headlines every day.

but i'll do that under a pseudonym and i'll avoid all english-speaking accounts.

I've heard people make the same case with all MSM outlets, print, Network news, cable news, etc. I don't know how many hearts and minds we change if we all just congregate at conservative blogs.

Big Technology is going to have a liberal slant, just where they are located and usually have Millenials running things.

95 I also am boycotting twitter, but for entirely different reasons. As a matter of fact, boycott may not even be the correct term. I don't like their tracking of people (me) all across the internet at all the sites that people (I) may visit. I have them completely blocked with various extensions to my browser, so their scripts don't run and I don't even see their annoying little buttons.

The problem I run into is when some site links to something that looks interesting, but it's through a twitter link. Usually, just following the link with my locked down browser will not let me get the content. So, I am happy to see the bloggers I read move away from it, because that means they are more likely to link directly to the interesting thing instead of to someone's tweet that mentions that interesting thing.

The next night I started watchign 50 shades of gray and so I announced on the site I'd live blog it on the site, but I didn't make any guaranteed i would finish, because I wanted to keep the entry barrier low. If I had to promise to finish watching it, it would have looked too onerous to begin.

Not to give Marvel the attention that Ace is trying to avoid...but they were courting Ava Duvernay for the Panther movie and talks died. Everyone was kissy kissy about it in the press but I thought the implication was that she wanted to make a kill whitey movie and Marvel refused?

And the original Civil War comic was very lefty, had a pro illegal immigration stance? All the rewrites for the movie seem to have eliminated that angle. The Cap movies have been surprisingly pro freedom; maybe it's a bait and switch, but I haven't been lefty sucker punched by them yet.

Metadata, search history etc. It all has value. Plus, if you use more than one Facebook product, like Instagram or WhatsApp, they get linked together whether you like it or not, especially if you use the same email for your account.

That's why I left FB years ago. I was getting indications that my personal and business lives on social media were being intermingled without my knowledge. Luckily, I wasn't fully on board with that stuff yet.

Well, first off, they still make money (though less) if you just see the advertisements, you don't have to click on them.

And secondly, that data is being shared across a massive array of different targeted ad users. There's absolutely no way the porn sites aren't sharing information on viewership with other advertisers so they can extrapolate (flesh out, if you will) a more complete picture of your tastes and habits based on the very, very basic appetites being serviced by pornography.

So, fuck them, is what it really comes down to.

Also, I'm certain that computer webcams are turned on at all times for basic information gathering purposes. So somewhere, someone has a database of 3/4s of the world's o-faces thanks to having those cameras on during peak pron hours.

Think about THAT.

If you aren't providing personal information, how are you the product?

What you respond to, what you click on, and what you talk about are all things they gather info on, and sell to advertisers. Advertisers are then able to target you wherever you go on the internet that twitter (or facebook, or whatever) gives them info on. You're the product.

When Amazon started up, they didn't give a crap about books. They sold books to gather info on customers: what they bought, what they browsed, what they reviewed, etc. Then armed with that, they started adding products and suggesting them, as well as selling info to advertisers.

Amazon isn't a store. Its an information gathering company that also sells stuff.

268 I have to confess, I'm mildly of another school of thought on the Twitter thing.

The SJW crybullies at the Twitter Star Chamber want to purge themselves of their opponents, so one of the first things they do is exile Robert Stacy McCain. I think it's pretty crappy what they did to him. The problem is that a number of other voices that I follow have decided to pull the plug and cancel their accounts in protest. Yeah, I get that, but there's this perverse part of me that says Why? They want conservative voices gone, and we punish them by granting their wish?

They want to socially interact in their euphoric little safe space, where there are no disagreeing voices and no need for trigger warnings. Why should I give them that? There's a part of me that wants to make life miserable for the crybullies. Something in me says that I should be their thorn in the flesh, that I should be challenging them.

So, I get it, but I don't know. Is it nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing, end them? I'm open to persuasion on this -- so please, feel free to talk me into this.

John McCain and Romney were very open about being Democrats, aesthetically, just fiscally conservative. And they wanted to be gentlemen, and didn't think it was appropriate to score cheap points on their opponent, Barack Obama, a decent and upstanding man from whom we had nothing to fear should he win the election.

Donald Trump wants to build a wall to secure our border, bomb the shit out of ISIS, tell anyone who gives him crap that they're an ugly, pathetic, low-energy mess of a loser, and makes cracks about female anchors being on their periods if they cross him. And make everybody rich.

They'd never in a billion years dream of putting him up as a stalking horse.

This is all really happening. We live in 21st century America and it looks like a comic book.

By the way, don't change your commenting habits BECAUSE of this.

Now, if I comment here, or write a post, some of you will comment on it. Many of you won't. Being a narcissist, i have to scan through comments to find someone remarking on me.

Twitter makes this form of narcissism more efficient because there's a "MENTIONS" feed which contains ONLY people responding to you.

So if i write a tweet, I can just hit MENTIONS to see who's retweeting it.

287 #174 TVMC is a streaming app. By definition, you are downloading the content to your computer. If you are concerned with violating copyright, that app is not a solution.

-From what I've read, it's definitely a gray area. If you torrent files, then I think everyone knows that you could get a strongly worded letter from your ISP, up to taken to court for piracy.

Streaming is a different animal, and one site I found said "the Copyright Office contends there is no violation when 'a reproduction manifests itself so fleetingly that it cannot be copied, perceived or communicated.' "So if a file is on your device temporarily, and automatically deleted, then you're at least in a better position. I haven't heard of the MPAA going after anyone who streams from these sites. So...

292  All the Morons should be aware that the TPP agreement that Republicans sold us out on significantly increases the penalties for pirating. Posted by: Vic-we have no party

Not surprising at all. To the uninitiated the amount of stuff that is available, nicely formatted, date sequenced, close captions available, searchable... is truly staggering. That's not hyperbole... it is truly staggering.

The only way to stuff that genie back in the bottle is to put American people in jail, or suffering ruinous financial penalties. But that's 0bama, watching out for those who watched over him.

Now I'm not a fan of piracy. But I pay Amazon, Hulu, and Netflix for content. There *could* possibly be a scenario where I watched something a couple weeks before release to them for free, before I paid for it. Eventually someone got paid.

he's a good actor but Christoph Waltz is kind of a joke at this point. I just mean, i've seen his persona so many times, he's always Christoph Waltz to me. he's not a character.

Maybe I just think of him as funny or goofy now because he was the bad guy in Horrible Bosses 2.

but he just seems... eh, silly to me as a big villain. I just hear a Christoph Waltz imitator when he speaks. (Good imitations of him in that movie I frequently mention, The Trip, starring Steve Coughlin and Tom (?) Bryden as themselves (basically)).

My understanding is if your passively downloading something your fine because you're not distributing it.

It would be like opening a link on YouTube and it ended up being copyright protected. Not your fault. But if you were the one uploading it? That's where it can be a problem.

The easy option is simply to walk away and deprive them of any audience or revenue. En masse this might have an effect on their bottom line and relevance.

Forcing them to boot you would be satisfying but really has no more effect than the first easy option.

If you want to actively make Twitter's life difficult, then follow Professor Bainbridge's suggestions here: http://www.professorbainbridge.com/professorbainbridgecom/2016/02/using-twitters-own-risk-factor-analysis-to-force-it-to-respect-viewpoint-diversity.html

362 61 I lost about a hundred pounds in 1989 on a self-created 1,000-calorie-a-day. I took about nine months.

In that time, I became more and more obsessive about food, not less, and at the end of it I'd kind of lost my mind somewhat.

Ta-daa!
Posted by: Kensington at February 25, 2016 04:56 PM (7Kbxu)

About two weeks ago I was reading about a study that was done where they put some dudes on a 1000 calorie a day diet for several months and at the end of it they actually sent some of them off to the looney bin because they had mental break downs. Crazy stuff.

Not to evangelize too much, but this is why I keto. Very Low carb, high fat (not the chemical crap, either), and moderate protein. I don't count calories, at all, I do keep carbs (minus fiber) under 20 g a day, between 60-80 G protein a day, and I eat somewhere between 130-160 g fat in the form of butter, coconut oil, olive oil, and animal fats every day. Been doing it nine months, lost 55 lb and counting, killed all my cravings for breads and sweets, and I don't want to ever go back to eating the other way. As a bonus, I just had my bloodwork done and everything's come back perfect, as where nine months ago it was all bad, bad, bad. Blood pressure came way down, too, and whereas I was borderline diabetic before I now have normal fasting blood sugar and my A1C is actually negative for indications of diabetes.

I swear this way of eating has saved my life. And I never feel deprived. It's kind of hard to when I can have a steak, slathered in butter and blue cheese and eat bacon every day if I want to.

Almost everyone who has too many pounds on them have those pounds as a result of eating crap. Cut that out and you can see a big difference.

377 Wanna lose weight? Stop eating fake food. Stick to real food, ie meats, veggies, fruit, nuts, etc and stay away from processed foods and/or foods with artificial flavors or colors.

It's not easy and it is more expensive and definitely more time consuming, since you have to cook all your food instead of buying the boxed version of it. But it's worth it.

378 Holy Sh*t Headline!

Off topic but I thought important.

Fox News reports on AG Loretta Lynch testifying to Congress yesterday where she said that career DOJ lawyers are now working with FBI agents on Hillary's e-mails. Fox says: "Legal experts say the assignment of career Justice Department attorneys to the case shows the FBI probe has progressed beyond the initial referral, or "matured," giving agents access to the U.S. governments full investigative tool box, including subpoena power for individuals, business or phone records, as well as witnesses."

So if this were a Law & Order episode we'd be past the Briscoe and Green opening and into the second half of the hour. The FBI has made a referral, so that this case has now "matured" to the point of DOJ involvement. This should be a Holy Sh*t Headline, especially when connected to another development yesterday.

That was Reuters reporting that Hillary's home brew server had emails with passages that closely tracked or mirrored top secret classified documents, but none that were the full version. The implication was that someone was copying and/or excerpting these passages on the secure system and then forwarding them to Hillary on her unsecured system. I'm looking at you Cheryl Mills.

Now we've been discussing this very thing here for months, but this feels like the noose tightening. I've learned that there would be a record of exactly who looked at the original secret classified document on SIRPNET, so that if it were Cheryl Mills who did the copying/excerpting you could prove that it was she in a court of law, or to a grand jury to get an indictment.

Put another way, there were things on Hillary's unsecure system that were copies of top secret classified documents that never should have left the secure SIRPNET system, and you can prove which of Hillary's minions accessed the original document on the SIRPNET system. QED. There's already an e-mail in the public domain where Hillary directs a minion to take a secure document off SIRPNET and send it to her unsecured, which proves that she was aware. There may be a lot more additional proof on Hillary's server, which has been in the FBI's possession for several months.

Developing ...

382 I have been resolute in resistance to Facebook and Twitter from the get-go, and not at all shy about saying this.

This got me a lapful of shit from various commenters in the dextrosphere, who lectured me on Breitbart's maxim about how "politics is downstream from culture", and said that we had to "engage" (cue Capt. Picard voiceover) with the culture, and how people like me were being "cultural rejectionists".

After I got over the vague oddity of hearing what sounded like a denunciation by Maoist Red Guards coming from people ostensibly on the right ("cultural rejectionist", really? Really?), I responded.

By noting that the people behind Facebook and Twitter are... drumroll... San Francisco Bay Area limousine liberals. And as such they have the same dedication to core free speech rights as any other Bay Area leftist, to wit, none at all. They view "permissible free speech" as THEIR speech and none other.

And, I cautioned, these leftists would ultimately move to crush and extinguish conservative commentary once they had drawn a fair bit of it into their lairs. Which has happened.

So, all that the bullshit "engagement with the culture" via Facebook and Twitter has done has been to prove the original point. Conservatives are being banned and filtered and ghettoized and marginalized. Meanwhile, the traffic that conservatives previously brought to Facebook and Twitter has helped make loathsome leftists rich beyond the dreams of Croesus. Golf clap.

Yep. Don't open a can, make it yourself. It tastes better, is better for you, and surprisingly easy. Just takes a bit more time.

There's no reason for 99.9% of the population to use weird trendy diets and special foods. Just eat sensible, well-prepared fresh food. If you're like me and tend to eat when nervous or stressed (or bored), make low-impact food like popcorn. You can eat a pillow full of popcorn and not have eaten all that much.

"I've figured out one of the reasons ace is so damn verbose: he not only uses 100 words to say what would take 10, he reiterates the point again and again. Its possible you are a decent writer, but no one will ever know until either you get an editor or you start to self-edit. Read over what you've read before you hit "publish" (or whatever antiquated system you're using) and brutally edit yourself. I say this because I care"

So I think this is out of line. I mean, writing shorter takes a lot more time. A. Lot. More. Time. If I had more time, I would have written a shorter brief is a famous saying among lawyers because it is true.
Also, Ace is probably one of thefunniest writers today who is also consistently insightful in politics and culture when he wants to be. He puts out a lot of product every day and it can't allbe KABOOM. You mightwant to retract andreword what I assume was a well intentioned comment gone wrong.

406 docweasel's right that i need to edit. What docweasel isn't considering is that the time for a post, from conception to publication, is an hour.

when you have an hour to conceive, write, and publish something, you sometimes don't reread and edit and organize as well as you would like.

This post wasn't written last night. I began writing it an hour before I published it, and actually had to take out most of my first effort (which was WHY I quit twitter) and start again.

docweasel's point makes sense until you consider two points:

1. a short turnaround time, and

2. The fact that docweasel is and always has been a bitterly jealous, vindictive little whiny bitch.

416 As someone mentioned earlier Twitter's real value was in allowing the hoi polloi to interact with the elite. When the Rotterham thing broke I got to talk to a British MP directly. That would never happen in daily life. She was not happy with me and tried to give me the back of the hand, but I won the exchange and she got a glimpse outside her bubble. That is extremely valuable in this day and age where our leaders are so closed minded and cordoned off from reality by gatekeepers at every turn.

Also, I got "followed" recently and when I went to see who it was there was a naked woman pussy shot gif arching towards the camera (which I had to desperately figure out how to block as my teen son came into the room. I've had other "iffy" follows on Tumblr, but that was by far the worst and I hope isn't a sign of things to come.

428 Unlike Ace, I am a content consumer, not a content provider. For me Twitter is akin to the worst parts of TV. It is like the overnight infomercials you find on Sunday mornings except instead of 26 minutes of horrific salesmanship it is 26 minutes of 10 second ads. It is possible to find a trail of worthy tweets and be generally amused, but it really isn't to be expected. In a non-writers kind of way I might have contributed a near pithy or possibily almost humorous one-liner, but like twitter it couldn't be relied on either. Like most consumers my peak abilities aren't up to the producers job requirements. And then there is the vanity everyone mentions. Ha, three people hearted the ship out of that. Now, the purges that all the right sort call a delusion. Twitter is just too good for my kind so now my brand is missing from the 140 character universe. It could have been mediocre for everyone, but you just can't have nice things these days.
