51 Gary "Far Side" Larson wrote a book called "There's a Hair in my Dirt".

It's told from the worm point of view. A child worm is complaining about eating only dirt and now there's a hair in it.

Daddy worm tells a story about how the hair got there, which is basically that a girl who understands the environment in Disney terms got everything wrong and ended up decomposing in the dirt the worms are eating.

I recommend it to everyone young and old.

Posted by: Krebs v Carnot

Realist painter, so painting what he sees. And:

Why is the new crescent Moon really high in the sky?

It must be Spring! The New Moon is visible only for a while after sunset. At sunset on the Spring equinox, the line of the ecliptic is really high in the sky. The opposite is true in Autumn. So if you want to see a really thin crescent in a dark sky, look for a New Moon in Spring, or a very Old Moon (just before dawn) in Autumn.

So, Autumn.

What I learned today:

French Mnemonic Device: Lunar-Phase

"premier, dernier"

Explanation: A French mnemonic is that the First Quarter Moon phase looks like a p, and the Last Quarter Moon looks like a d. In this mnemonic, p and d actually stand for what you see: premier or dernier.

78 I want everyone to be careful out there. Pertussis (Whooping Cough) is on the rise. It's a bacterial infection of the respiratory tract, which is highly contagious, and spread through contact with an infected's saliva droplets. Starting out with cold-like symptoms, it changes to a tell-tale near-uncontrollable cough characterized by gasping for breath between coughing fits. It can lead to hospitalization of infants, or seniors with respiratory health issues. Or potentially worse. It can also take weeks to get rid of the cough (adults may not exhibit the "whooping"). Diagnosis may involve taking a bacterial culture, and treatment can involve an antibiotic (as the illness is bacterial).

It is a vaccine-preventable illness, yet cases are on the rise in many states. You can still get the illness even if you have been vaccinated.

My apologies if someone has already covered this.

As someone trained in science who creates cabochons from rocks and minerals, it is a supreme irony that some of the best on-line sources of information regarding rocks and minerals and identifying and finding them are sites focused on the "healing powers" of said rocks and minerals. There were others that fought the "Alien Nation" invasion war for a long time, (many getting pushed aside as racists by the new age conservatives) but it is really Ann's last book that put Trump on his course, and with Trump Power made stopping the invasion and changing of our country at the forefront of this election.

But still the hate burns. But she keeps fighting. Three cheers for Ann.

Deadpool was great, but my current policy is I'm not going to go see a movie in theaters unless I hear good things about it from a variety of sources.

The last Batman v Superman trailer looks good, even if I really really disagree with the casting for Lex Luthor. So yeah. Not going to see it in theaters unless people rave about it.

It's not designed to.

The substitution of our manufacturing sector with a "new economy" was so BJ Cliton could pay off his ChiCom owners. Those who supported the move are innumerate and have absolutely no idea how a free market economy operates.

140 I never paid attention to the moon's phases before my stepson got me involved in Boy Scouts. Now I can't NOT pay attention to them.

I always pay attention to moon phases because I'm a fisherman and they correspond 1:1 to the tides.

On my favorite water, the outer beaches of Cape Cod, it's really easy because a full moon means high tide at midnight. The Bay side is an hour behind that, the Sound side is ...mumble.. I always have to look that up.

I live too far away from my water now to do it any more, but I used to draw a sine curve on paper and mark out the tide phases for the next few days to see when I could get away from work and kids and where I would go based on the tide.

Last Oct, 2015 Obama asked for tech companies help in welcoming Syrian refugees

Last Dec, 2015, Obama asked for tech companies help to fight ISIS

266 My thought is, the only reason for Rubio to stay in this race is to try and force the eventual winner to take a softer position on amnesty.

Kinda of a "look how long our guy stayed in--you have to listen to him" desperation whine.

After his "wins" in NH, SC and NV--where he has less delegates than Cruz--it's over: His only chance was to actually win and actually build an actual lead in the Super Tuesday races.

Instead, he's falling and Trump appears to be gaining both his and Cruz' voters.

Among those set to attend a meeting Friday with Silicon Valley top executives are Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch, FBI Director James B. Comey, Obama counterterrorism adviser Lisa Monaco, Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr., National Security Agency Director Michael Rogers and DeputySecretary of State Anthony J. Companies planning to send senior executives include YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft and LinkedIn. Apple chief executive Tim Cook is also expected to participate.

320 Question here are, we still against amnesty? I had a debate with a fellow moron over amnesty and he said amnesty didn't bother him as much as having a strong interior security. Anyone else feel this way? I thought the whole immigration fight was to stop amnesty. Mario supported/supported amnesty. Trump wants amnesty for the "good one's" and Cruz something, something h1 Visa's. I thought this was a pretty universal sentiment in no amnesty, kick the illegals out. I guess I was wrong.

Define "amnesty." I, for both practical and humanitarian reasons, would like to see some sort of carrot to go with the stick, some sort of way that a decent, hardworking, otherwise-law-abiding illegal (yes, they do exist - I know some) can become legalize their situation after a demonstration of good faith and behavior. That might mean nothing more than needing to go back home and reapply for a green card, and certainly should not mean citizenship or a blanket pardon...

I think that it will be a lot easier to get compliance with the law if we offer a bit of hope for those that want to live here and are willing to comply with our laws and assimilate. Otherwise there are going to be a lot of very desperate people.

============
Nope. Not happening.

Both OH and FL are winner-take-all.

Even a 1 point victory by Trump--with Kasich or Rubio 2nd--gets Trump 100% of those delegates.

That's why March 15 is the absolute knock-out--not just that but, we will have passed the point where over half of the total delegates will have been voted.

Trump will have a lead large enough after that, that not even running the table in the remaining winner-take-all states (some 500 delegates) will get the nomination.

That being said, those things aren't anywhere near guaranteed in the current political climate, so I'm pretty sure most people around here are taking a harder stance on the amnesty principle (not without good reason).

For
those who don't know what this means, it means that the administration
is able to draw a graph (like a network chart) of who is talking to
whom. It is able to say what are the key nodes through which any
business passes, find all its Internet 'friends' and interlocutors and
potentially drill down into the comms themselves --in time series. This would pick up every organization of significance, whatever its purpose.....

The fact that you belong to a large group, for example the 50% of the
US population that is conservative or Republican, does not give you
safety in numbers. Within this large group of millions are a much
smaller number of key leadership nodes. They are the nodes that matter,
the top of the hierarchy mandated by Dunbar's Number.
If you can
control, corrupt or even bait those nodes you can reduce the entire
group to impotence. You can effectively decapitate it, a strategy
applied not only to al-Qaeda but apparently also by the IRS in its hunt
of Tea Party and Republican fundraising groups. The virtual world lets
you dominate the virtual high ground. You don't have to clobber all
Muslims and Republicans. You just have to clobber the key nodes and the
rest will mill around like leaderless ants.

Amusingly this dovetails into the "Million Rifles March" scenario--the key nodes just aren't actually in DC. They're decentralized around the country at think tanks and NGOs and media outfits and tech firms. I can't even conceive how a hypothetical insurgent group could conduct a coherent and successful campaign against that without becoming compromised nearly instantly given the state of communications. It just wouldn't work without a hell of a lot of prep and boatloads of luck, not as things stand.

As to her dating Maher, idk, having a life and being in touch with "the other side" is fine by me, and probably helpful in establishing a well rounded belief system, as opposed to being isolated in the echo chamber. Maher the atheist has made waves with liberals by pointing out Christians are nothing like the Muslims of the world.

She promotes her books ... of course. But is she controversial only because that sells? Does her take on McCarthy really help her sell, or does she have a valid and deep point? I think she gets at the root of the "commie infiltration", and that of course generates controversy in PC World.

As I said yesterday, Willard may be an establishment squish who I did not support BUT he is a fairly honest man (unlike Trump who continually lies if he feels it is to his advantage). I do not believe that he would be making the statements he is if he didn't feel there was something to the issue.
And the notion that he and Perry are somehow both establishment stooges is ludicrous. Willard is establishment but Perry... not so much.

It is not out of line to look at candidate's taxes and, given Trump's lack of any scruple past what is good for Trump, it would likely be prudent to know what his personal and business tax filings look like.

I've been making a lot of noise about the cultural aspect of his

economy. This election is about the economy.

He might not be qualified from a social media or WSJ op-ed or

but economically?

453 God knows, I don't like Trump and I've argued with Trump supporters here, but-

Last night, I got into an argument with my Republican (GOPe) BIL who was shouting over the phone that this income tax business will kill Trump, who is apparently as bad as Hitler. When I say, "Oh, for God's sake, that's ridiculous" and said I didn't think the income stuff would hurt Trump any more than anything else he's said or done has, I was accused of being a Trump fan, which is hilarious.

Just as Trump fans are prone to call you a Rubio or Jeb fan if you express doubts about Donald, the rabid Trump haters (the real Rubio and Jeb fans) call you a Trump groupie if you suggest that he is not Hitler and say he's better than Hillary.

Then my sister got on the phone to tell me Trump is every bit as evil as Hillary. Fox News says so, you see.

So I find myself disliking Trump and yet, when I got off the phone, I fantasized for a minute about how much I will secretly enjoy next Thanksgiving, if Trump could pull it off. My family of GOPe fans and libs will be sitting there bemoaning the End of the World As We know It, and I would be meanspirited enough to sit there feeling a warm glow - although then I'll immediately start fretting about who Teh Donald will appoint to SCOTUS.

However, I don't think that will happen. I think I'll be depressed and the libs will be gloating about President Cankles.

467 Don't be ridiculous, of course a rollback would work, it would just have to be principled, sustained, and have teeth. It would be incredible difficult, but it could be done.

If you really believe "No 'rollback' would ever work" then you're not actually advocating for civil disobedience, you're advocating for civil war.
Posted by: Ghost of kari - WAR at February 25, 2016 11:32 AM (xuouz)

-------------------------------

I was speaking specifically of a march on Washington, its effectiveness. If you march on a rollback, the list of demands would be a mile long, not everyone would be united and the occupation would quickly disband over disparate interests.

Not saying you couldn't march on something limited and focused, like shut down the IRS. But that's the only thing you'll get and ultimately won't mean a thing.

And a demand for dissolution does not have to result in civil war. There are instances of non-violent or relatively non-violent breakup of countries or governments falling (Czechoslovakia, USSR, Romania). Now I fully admit the other type of breakup is more prevalent.

Now a sustained electoral win would work for a rollback. But it would have to be extremely focused on what the end goal is, otherwise the interest groups will tear it apart.

473 My guess: Romney is bluffing, but he is savvy enough to know what calling out Trump on his tax return will yield.

This is all speculation, but I have a fair amount of confidence in it.

Trump does not own $5-10 billion in assets. I expect that he has an array of minority interests in assets which collectively might be valued in the billions. He will have disproportionate controlling interest in many of those, but he does not own them.

He is able to afford a lifestyle. There's no question that he's rich.

But if he has to produce tax returns it will show that he has markedly less income than he'd like to let on.

He keeps saying "I built a great company". What's the company? Trump Enterprises, Inc.? Can you find a 10-K for it?

533 I had a minor revelation last night.

Regarding Trump. (and to a certain extent Obama)

And it is this:

You know how, unhinged journalists became over the emergence of bloggers.

Because, in essence, bloggers destroyed the illusion of journalists/opinion writers/commenters as professionals-

they were simply guys with an bigger soapbox to stand on.

As an example, say Juan Williams, that guy is a complete moron (not the good kind), I wouldn't take his opinion buying a McDonald's cheeseburger let alone anything political-

he simply had the right connections to guys with money.

Now, Trump is doing the same exact thing to the world of politicians-

this aren't guys who are any better or smarter or who have conducted studies and have a deep understanding of issues,

they are simply schmoes who talk well and have convinced people with money to back them.

Money is the breakpoint.

Trump has shown that.

Any schmoe with money and a gift of gab can run circles around these morons.

Politicians aren't in any way shape or form members of a "profession"

their experience means nothing as we've seen with the Turtle and Boehner and Ryan.

If their experience meant anything, they could've come up with a way to stop Obama or hell, Trump for that matter.

Obama actually proved the same thing, but the MSM was able to play the smarter/wiser game with him

cuz anyone who pointed out that the Emperor was naked was a RRRRRRRRAAAAAAAYYYYCCCIIIISSSS!

The point is proven by Trump using his own money and running his own campaign.

Any businessman with enough money and smarts could beat these monkeys.

Any of you morons with a gift for gab who won the lottery could beat these weasels.

So, to sum up:

Journalists - Not a profession.

Politicians - Not a profession.

STEM majors -still professionals.

I would be surprised if there's any record of a direct request - just talk about troublesome atmosphere, hate breeds terrorism, get one of your guys as an executive and then someone steps up to rid Obama of those troublesome voices.

Same thing happened with the DC/NYC media - so many of them are related to someone in the WH, plus the WH Press office's very aggressive treatment of any reporter/news outlet that dares to criticize, means things just go easiest when the go with Obama. Doubt they've ever had to demand good coverage, it's just that they have the right people picking the stories, and pesky journalists like Atkisson are suppressed, harassed and eventually let go.

There is no deprogramming them by taking out theirleaders. There is no reasoning with people who arrived at their conclusions through pure emotion. Many HAVE tried to engage them in logic and debate. They are now silencing us for daring to do so. Their followers are cheering this on and in fact, helping to do so.
Both sides have to want to talk. We do. They do not.

And their leadership will suffer seeing their base evaporate once it's provided, for the first time in this generation's time on earth, with a real choice, fair and square, between freedom and serfdom.

Their whole worldview revolves around depriving people of fair choices. That's what liberalism IS.

No, it was because Buffett's compensation is 99.9% in the form of capital gains which is only 15% (plus the new ObamaCare tax after a certain amount so 20%)

The secretary would be at 39.6% for her marginal rate, plus the SS tax, FICA, MediCare, etc. because she is paid a "wage", not a capital gain.

For most people, capital gains are some sort of side investment but their main income comes from a wage.

Most of Wall Street in the top tier make all of their money through capital gains.

I personally think Republicans should not have lined up to protect this loophole for Wall Street billionaires, but I'm more of a populist conservative.

Trump was advocating policies then (while wildly exaggerating a mild recession into a "depression") that may have benefited him personally but would have been bad for the economy in general.

I just would prefer to make a deal where we offset that somewhere else say for upper middle class tax relief.

No doubt Romney has been drafted by the GOPe to assist with getting the interloper out of the race. Romney, like all the other prominent Republicans and conservative writers/pundits, no doubt finds the spectacle of Trump distasteful and problematic. And dignity, decorum are more important than winning, as Romney so deftly demonstrated in 2012.

Ted Cruz has gone by a short form for his middle name (Edward) his entire life... as do many sons who are named after their fathers.
Insisting on calling him Rafael is: A) confusing as that is the name his FATHER is known by, B) a showing of pettiness as Scribbler knows he goes by Ted and C) a kinda racist attempt to remind people that Cruz has a foreign name.

When the right does it, it's not usually racist, but when lefties do it? Oh yeah, it's racist. A lot of them insist on calling him Rafael, and they also call Jindal "Piyush" and Nikki Haley "Nimrata". It's their way of implying that the person is a self-loathing minority because they use a nickname. It's racist because it implies that people of some ethnicities aren't entitled to use anglicized names.

712 Even a 1 point victory by Trump--with Kasich or Rubio 2nd--gets Trump 100% of those delegates.

That's
why March 15 is the absolute knock-out--not just that but, we will have
passed the point where over half of the total delegates will have been
voted.

Trump will have a lead large enough after that, that not
even running the table in the remaining winner-take-all states (some 500
delegates) will get the nomination.
