8 All beautiful pets! Keep them rolling in.

Thanks MH & Elle.

Now, since this comment will self-destruct and disappear shortly, I'm out.
Anyone know how to NOT get banned?
I've changed my IP three times already today (turn off phone, wait, turn back on).
Banned every time...

10 Skip, have you sent us pics? MisHum picks all the pics for the post and I purposely don't look at the ones sent in because I like surprises. He did good with this batch.
Guess the breeds?

I think CaliGirls is a Benghal kitty. Dr. Muldoon told me the breed of his dog but can't remebember now.

If you haven't sent in any in, send us your pics.
I promise, they will get Ace famous eventually.

41 I have to tell you guys the most awesome story about one of my BFF's who is a most awesome woman.

Last weekend our husbands were camping, and Sunday morning she looked out, and her stupid dog was in the marsh fighting with a racoon. So my friend, all 5' 2" of her, went off to get the dog (fortunately it was low tide) and fell in a deep, approx. 6' hole of muddy water.

After she dragged herself out, she proceeded to go get the dog and try to bring him home, while being pursued by the racoon.

Then, the dog fell in the same hole and disappeared. So, girlfriend went back in the dark, cold, muddy water to find the dog. She did, and as she dragged it to the edge of the hole, the racoon began attacking her.

She fought off the racoon, it ambled away, and after she dragged the dog out of the hole she realized he wasn't breathing, so she gave it mouth-to-mouth.

After she got it breathing again, she went inside, showered quickly, and got the dog to the vet. The dog got some sort of booster shot, and then the vet told her she needed to get her scratched, bitten self to the ER, which she did, for rabies shots.

I am proud of her toughness and in awe.

45 Prayer photo origin-

I will share with you the origin of the photo: Many years ago, my family went thru some tough times and our (then) only child, James, stayed living with grandma and grandpa for a few months. My in-laws had a dog, named Lightning (his name was given to him after he showed up one night at their door during a very intense summer storm in North Florida and no one ever claimed him), and this dog loved my son. A few days before Christmas of 2005, my father in law took James to bed and he said his prayers like any other night, and when the dog sat by him, James told him to say prayers with him. To their surprise, Lightning just put his pawn on the bed and my father in law took this picture. Timing was perfect!

If you're switching dog foods they do recommend doing it gradually. Feeding the new stuff mixed with the old stuff and slowly moving the ratio up on the new food.

Posted by: buzzion at February 27, 2016 04:26 PM (zt+N6)

66 55 Yep, learned my lesson the hard way about changing Cheyenne's vittles. Change too fast, or to the wrong kind of food, and her innards get, well, kinda liquid-y.

67 Guess the breed?
OK - without looking at any other comments, and going in order:

Buckley is a kind of shepherd or border collie relative?
Molly is a very pretty American Pit
Regal is the prettiest weasel I have ever seen.
Dexter is a cat.
Weasel Dog, chihuahua
Luck looks like a very content hotdog/dachshund
Then there are more cats,
And an ewok at the end.

Sorry - I mean no disrespect to the cats. I like them well enough, but couldn't tell the difference between a calico and a Persian if you paid me.

70 23 Thanks CaliGirl! Your kitty is beautiful!

WeaselDog is a rescue we adopted a little over a year ago. She had been at the shelter for three months and was a terrified little 8 pound mess when we got her. Her hip had been broken and the stitches from the operation had never been taken out. She just hadn't been treated very well and had been in at least two different homes in her first year. It took a while for her to trust people, but she has put on a couple of pounds and is a great little girl!

71 Geeze, even a 'scandal' regarding the prayer picture.

Now I will share with you the actual origin of the photo. Karen Fasenmyer and her husband do not even know this child. This picture was taken for a Christmas card by the child's actual parents-my sister and her husband. No, the dog did not miraculously jump up there to pray, they called him up there for the picture, and my brother-in-law blew on him to get him to close his eyes as my sister took the picture

Posted by: RWC - Team BOHICA at February 27, 2016 04:28 PM (hlMPp)

72 I have never seen a cat with leopard spots like that.

Or are they Jaguar spots?

Posted by: eleven at February 27, 2016 04:29 PM (qUNWi)

73 I do watch food ingredients much more closely now for doggies and kitties.

I started using Dynovite 6 months ago for my 6 year old Lab and it is great for her coat and overall health.

Posted by: cheri at February 27, 2016 04:30 PM (ylAck)

74 CaliGirl, how are their temperaments? I love those cats, but somebody told me once that they can be a bit high strung...

Posted by: antisocialist at February 27, 2016 04:30 PM (cDs+4)

75 My diabetic kitteh couldn't tolerate the prescription formula food. Kept having diarrhea issues (in the litter box, thanks be).

Vet had just sent in a prescription refill, and when I contacted the on-line pharmacy to cancel the (very expensive) dry food, it had already shipped.

I was very pleasantly pleased that they refunded the cost in full, and told me to donate the food to my local shelter. And that's what I did today.

Kitties are back on their Blue Buffalo grain-free, and doing much better.

76 CaliG, really gorgeous kitty.

Posted by: L, Elle at February 27, 2016 04:31 PM (2x3L+)

77 One of the ways we deal with the loss of pets is to remember the funny or touching aspects they brought into our life. I'll post some of these over time.

One of our two poodles, littermates, went blind when he was 4 years old. I was shocked at how many people, including a vet, assumed we would put him down. Since he wasn't in pain, that never occurred to us. The surprise, and delight, was that his brother simply became his seeing eye dog. When walking on leash or in an unfamiliar area, blind Argyle just kept his shoulder next to Duncan's flank. They both did fine until old age caught up with them.

Posted by: JTB at February 27, 2016 04:31 PM (FvdPb)

78 We feed our cats whatever we can afford, sometimes they don't like it, sometimes they do. If they don't like it, well they complain and don't eat much but eventually it gets used up.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at February 27, 2016 04:31 PM (39g3+)

101 Every Friday our local paper has a page of cats and dogs for adoption thru various agencies. The saddest ones are the pets in the shelter whose owners have died. Their little faces will break your heart.

Posted by: Jane D'oh at February 27, 2016 04:39 PM (FsuaD)

102 If your dog needs to lose weight, I highly recommend green beans. My sheltie eats dry food in the morning, then 1 1/2 cups of green beans, sprinkled with the dry food for dinner.

As a supplement for the ear infections and skin diseases that shelties get, I also use 2 Derma3 supplements (Omega 3 fatty acids), and a vitamin E capsule. I just poke them with a stick-pin, drain them onto the beans and stir.

She lost ten pounds within a year. Now I can feed her table scraps when she's being good and not begging or whining.

So if you have two, you don't mind giving me one of them?

But seriously, cats are like humans, in that the pretty ones certainly catch our eyes first, but that doesn't mean they are meant for us. If we can find a balance between looks and compatibility (again, like humans), that's the goal.

119 My 108 lbs. dog doesn't like the vet. Usually I leash him and just manhandle him out of the car despite him bracing himself in the back but I hate to do that. We often go on leashless walks where I just open the door and he hops out. So this week I just opened the door and he hopped out. The plan was I would then call him over and put the leash on. But after he jumped he realized where we were. The parking lot was parked full and he took off behind a row of cars. I walked the row looking behind each car. Finally at the last car I peeked around and there he was peeking back at me. I called him over and he reluctantly came over to be leashed.

120 I had the "don't switch foods too quickly" conversation last night with my neighbor (the one with a giant chested pit & a three-legged yorkie.)

He found Iams food in the big bag at Food Lion marked $13.99, so he grabbed one, but asked the nearest employee to check the price - " it must be wrong. This stuff is usually $30+"
Told it was supposed to be $17.99, he threw it in the cart. When he went to checkout, it rang up $7.99, so he ran back & grabbed every bag they had on the shelf.

I found a decent quality food that Tucker seems to love, so I've stuck with it for the last three years or so. Purine One smartblend. He likes the lamb.

Pet food quality / nutrional value / junk would be an interesting topic to explore one weekend...

Gingy took that picture when she was eating baby carrots. He didn't move for about 10 minutes, just watching her eat. She originally captioned the picture "I WOULD REALLY LIKE A BABY CARROT PLEASE!"

We got Colby from a craigslist ad, somebody who just couldn't spare any time for him. He's blind in one eye from where a groomer poking him by accident with scissors. He's a pretty good little dog, but because his previous owner was a woman, he's really imprinted on Gingy, much to her (sometimes pretend) annoyance.

He barks his head off when anyone comes in the door, for about 3-4 minutes, then he makes friends. His job is to give me enough warning to get the gun safe open if someone breaks in.

136 Okay pet geniuses- a behavioral question. The last two months of so Buckley has taken to bolting if he gets out the front door. Used to be we would just call "truck" and he would run to the truck to get let in for a ride. Now he just hits the driveway like shot from a cannon. Up the fifty yard driveway and then down into a neighboring cul-de-sac. Goes to the same several spots every time. We drive down and catch up with him and with a little coaxing he'll (sometimes) come jump in the truck. It looks like he's just visiting the neighbor dogs and checking pee mail. Not sure how to break him of this other than a shock collar.

We've worked him on a long leash before and up in the mountains he does good (slack leash, responds to "Stop!" "Come!" But here in town it's just weird.

P.S. He's not neutered.

143 I will never doubt the healing that a pet can bring about. We were visiting Mrs. JTB's father in a nursing home while he recovered from brain surgery. We brought one of our toy poodles, Strudel the Poodle, to see if her dad would respond. The facility would allow only one of our three, all littermates, at a time. Strudel even full grown never lost his puppy proportions for some reason. His brother and sister were tiny but had the usual poodle build.

We carried him in a tote bag, all 6 pounds of him. The experiment was a big success. Her dad reached out and had the best response he had shown since the surgery. I'm convinced it helped him to a full recovery.

On the way out, Strudel stood up in the bag but only his front paws and nose showed. Sort of like an adorable Kilroy. One of the lady patients saw him, assumed it was a stuffed toy and reached over to touch the 'toy' dog. Imagine her surprise and delight when the 'toy' gave her hand a lick. That stopped our departure while she held and petted him. This started a round of other patients who had to play with him. He loved it and we were king and queen of the facility for that day.

146 Chi, that is great idea. I have thoughts on that subject too. I started Juno out with a high priced, high protein food that was too rich for her and my vet recommended something more mainstream and commercial bc she seems to have a sensitive stomach. The expensive Canadian food made her throw up and gave her diarrhea.

I wonder if it makes any difference at all. Write up soothing for a future thread. I'd love to talk bout that subject myself. Also, homemade blends. To transition Juno away from the expensive stuff, my vet had me making rice/chicken/yogurt meals with pumpkin here and there which agreed with her.

I did a lot of research on this and there seem to purists about dog food. I just wonder what is actually good and worth the money and/or effort and what isn't.

You have to "own" the doorway. This is a "Dog Whisperer" -thing. The reaction to the door can be muted, over time.

The first thing you have to work on is the reaction.

Open the door and back the dog away, letting him know you "own" the doorway. Back him away until he SITS.

Repeat this over and over again, (it should take about fifteen minutes. An hour, with stubborn breeds.)

The dog will get the picture. You own the doorway and you are the Pack Leader who expects a certain behavior.

The most important part of the exercise is backing the dog away until he sits. Use tennis rackets or pillows or whatever to make yourself bigger, so as to block his path.

Accompany your redirection of the dog with a "hey" or a famous "Tsssst!", like the Dog Whisperer.

149 The plan was I would then call him over and put the leash on.

That's basically the approach we have been using. Seems to have taken pretty well at the doorway. Still have the matter of trust if he is off the leash, in terms of reliably responding to "Come". We leash him at all times now.

Odd thing is that in the back yard (which is fenced, but has a couple of low spots that he could easily clear if he decided to leap) he has never bolted. He'll sit on one side of the fence and watch or bark at deer just outside the fence without chasing.

161 Also, never let your dog be the first out the door. You expect a behavior before you leave the house and You Will Get It. No matter how long it takes.

You can run off some energy in the house first, but let him calm down before taking the walk. Leaving the house with an excited dog defeats the purpose.

The dog should never pull on the leash. YOU are leading, the dog is just lucky enough to come along.

If you are correcting a behavior during the walk, pull sideways. Never back. Pulling back turns the dog into a determined animal.

If the dog gets excited during the walk, make it sit without looking at whatever it wants to get-at.

All of these exercises take time. If you want things done quickly, I'm not your guy.

Muldoon, this is excellent advice that my own dog trainer made me do. You treat every doorway as an opportunity to show Buckley who is master and who walks out first. You make him sit first and then stay. Once he stays, open the door. If he tries to run, shit the door again, and go back to sit and then stay. Repeat. You and your wife always walk out the door first. Buckley last and only when you give the Release or Come command. It really is that hard to get a dog who likes the outdoor and car rides to do this. Ramallah maybe one week at most if you consistently refuse to let him outside until he sits and stays first and then waits until you release him on your command.

Yeah, it can be weaned, but only with a lot of leash-training first. Dogs want to please, so they will respect the behavior you are looking for after time.

As an aside: Never reward, (pet and comfort), a dog that is displaying bad behavior. That only rewards the bad behavior. Too many people hug and comfort their dogs when the dogs are acting like hyenas ...lol.

174 Dog gets cheap dry food (check labels for manufacturer, Purina has some good generics under house brands) and Cat had to start a can of wet food a day with his dry for urinary problems. Otherwise, they are both omnivorous and love baby snacks. Cat decided that he wanted the baby's goldfish crackers. Baby sat down until Cat was finished. Dog decided that he wanted some too, he is the one who sat down until both were finished.

176 What Slapweasel said sounds about right.

Just be sure not to reward him for 'jumping the gun,' meaning, don't pet him for misbehaving. Just pull him back on the lease.

Also, you should train him to walk along side of you when you're outdoors. The old four-corner perimeter thing.

194 Yup, Seamus! That'll set you back a touch! Walking with your dog is the most important thing you can do to have a well-behaved animal.

You get to see the triggers and correct the behavior on the spot.

The wost thing, (besides coddling misbehavior), is locking a dog away to avoid a problem. If confronted head-on when the dog is young, it can take only a matter of hours to stop the behavior in its tracks.

I think your training tricks are spot on, but I have three dogs, but one is an invalid so trying to enforce the "alpha dog owns the door" is tricky for the young dog that needs the training because I have to be holding the old whenever I take them outside. I also have a very awkward exit pattern that works against me.

I read a fascinating piece about Toxoplasmosis, a year or so ago. They have discovered that it changes the personalities of its human hosts differently depending upon whether the host is male or female.

Female hosts are made more gregarious and outgoing and, most notably, become more risk-taking.

Male hosts are the opposite.

Scientists believe it is designed, somehow, to attract carriers to each other in order to perpetuate the organism itself.

CT, that is very true for cats. Dogs vary by breed. Some are very independent and can be left alone but some like my Great Dane, become dysfunctional, aggressive, or fearful and deteriorate if left alone and ignored too much. Mine is a very social animal and requires a lot of affection. Even if she is calm and not really active, she needs to just sit next to me. And that's all. I only put her in her pen when I have to leave the house or else if she is misbahving and needs a brief timeout

It is best if she "goes into" the pen, rather than being "put" there. It allows you to show dominance. The best result is being able to walk away and she stays there.

Getting her to go on her own may take minutes, it may take an hour.

Getting her to stay there, with the door open will take at least an hour. Preferably after she's been worn-down a bit by a walk or some playtime.

Like I said, it is just another opportunity to show dominance.

235 Slap, I leave the door open to her pen all day. I sectioned the foyer of my house off and built a wall to give her an indoor pen. I can't do that outdoors outside since I have coyotes on my hillside who have come after my chickens more than once. My vet says they will lure her out to play and then eat her alive. So I was unwilling to let her out off the leash when she was a puppy. I do now that she is so big but I always have a boating accident recovery nearby when I let her out just in case a pack of coyotes show up.

She has a crate in her pen and her food and water bowl. The only way I can get her to go in there by herself is when she is exhausted from running outside with me and wants the comfort of her own space. If she is being a pain, the only way I can get get her in there is by tricking her with a treat or keeping her on the leash and bringing her in there.

As long as you don't give her the treat, but more importantly:

When you lead her there, tug until she moves and then loosen the tension on the leash. She must get the idea and move forward.

After she enters the pen, she must sit or lie down. You Win!

And you must leave yourself time to do this... lol.

I use every opportunity I have to present myself as Pack-Leader, even with time constraints.

Posted by: Slapweasel, (Cold1) (T) at February 27, 2016 06:22 PM (OQ9R7)

237 Slap, you still here?

What if she just plops down bc she is a stubborn willful dog and knows what I'm up to? She has pretty good instincts and if she thinks I am trying to lock her up, she just drops down on the ground and refuses to budge. I usually leave myself enough time before I have to leave so that I can deal with this, but she is so smart.

Even when I'm not going anywhere and filling up her food and water and know that she is really hungry, she watches me do it from a distance and refuses to come in her pen until I am far away and can't lock her up.

239 Oh, as an example:

My second sheltie was very excite-able. The leash mad him go NUTS! So... he didn't get to go outside until I walked him around inside the house!

He wanted that door and I wasn't about to give it to him. If he pulled, I stopped and sat him down.

After fifteen minutes of that, he wasn't AS excited about the door. He had to sit before I opened it, after I opened it and after I dropped the leash.

It got to the point where I could leave the door open and he wouldn't go out.

...unless there was another dog or a freaking CAT!

*ugh*

...back to the drawing board.

Get my buddy's dog and train him with the dog outside the door. Back my dog away and wait for him to calm down.

Take him to my buddy's house with a cat and a dog, watch him pee in the living-room, immediately...

*ugh* ...back to the drawing-board.

Next time over... Bring him in, on the leash and yank his chain sideways if he starts to squat. Take him back out and re-start. --As many times as necessary.

It took me ten separate visits before I knew he wouldn't mark his territory in their house.

The point is, as much knowledge as I have, there is patience involved. Use every opportunity you have to use level-headed dominance and make for a calm, submissive animal.

Dogs have "trigger areas" that make them move. While applying leverage with the leash, lift-poke her underside or somewhere from behind. (Large dogs make that difficult, I know.)

The point of the exercise is to get her to move on her own. Your will power is stronger than the dog's. Once she stands on her own, you've now gotten most of the "power" back.

Lead her gently and loosen the tension on the leash every time she moves on her own.

Loosening the tension is a "reward" in-and-of itself. The dog's collar should be High-Up on the neck, like you see in the dog shows. There is a reason for this. It is uncomfortable for them to resist that location.

It doesn't "choke" the dog, but it makes them more compliant.

I brought spray carpet-cleaner and a scrub brush with me after the first time. The dog only "got" to mark three times before I caught onto his "process".

He would slow-down and sniff an area intently before getting unceremoniously interrupted by my tug and lead back outside.

244 Somehow, my BP went down significantly since the last post. Strange. And the throbbing in the temple, gone.

Hey, I like this place! More please. Let none despoil this Eden.

245 The only dog I ever had, except when I was a kid, happened by accident. I went to my dads' to get something storing in an open building. There was a dog in there, looked liked he had been injured, me being a softie, came home and took some food to him. I had just returned home and here was this dog walking in the driveway. I didn't really want a dog, but I couldn't get rid of him. I made a dog house out of a camper shell. He was with me for the rest of his life. Chased cars. I broke him of that. Got picked up by the Humane Society. Loved to ride in the pickup with his paws on the dash. Don't know what mix or breed. Looked like a sheep dog, but was too small for that. I miss him. I named him Harry.

250 As for that flying dogs thing .... Perhaps their dire straits, earlier, or at some point in their lives, caused them to, or allowed them to, "evolve" (not in the normal sense, of course, but in a more immediate sense). It would be experimentally interesting to see if dogs with really good homes, for their whole lives, would adapt and perform as well as those dogs that had suffered a more intense environment. I just wonder if there is not a lesson in that sample, other than dogs are better than most people. Which they are, of course.
