Overnight Open Thread (2-14-2016)

Quote of the Day

BLITZER: [What do you think of] Nancy Pelosi, the speaker?

TRUMP: Well, you know, when she first got in and was named speaker, I met her. And I'm very impressed by her. I think she's a very impressive person. I like her a lot.

But I was surprised that she didn't do more in terms of Bush and going after Bush. It was almost - it just seemed like she was going to really look to impeach Bush and get him out of office, which, personally, I think would have been a wonderful thing.

BLITZER: Impeaching him?

TRUMP: Absolutely, for the war, for the war.

PA Concealed Carrier Saves Cop Swarmed By "Unarmed" Youths

An officer who broke up a fight between two teen boys that had attracted a large crowd at that location was holding one of the combatants at bay when the teen's opponent attacked the officer, Chitwood said.

"As he breaks up the fight, he takes one kid and then the other jumps [on] him. Now he's fighting two of them and he's calling for an assist officer at the same time," Chitwood said. "There's a crowd of 40 or 50 kids watching the fight, and they all move in towards the officer."

That's when the good Samaritan, who lives on the block, came out of his house with a gun in his hand and told the teens to get away from the cop, Chitwood said.

Women Sue University of Tennessee to Deny Due Process Rights in Sexual Assault Complaints

And lest you think I'm exaggerating they explicitly spell out what they're suing over:

The plaintiffs say that UT's administrative hearing process, which is utilized by public universities across the state, is unfair because it provides students accused of sexual assault the right to attorneys and to confront their accusers through cross-examination and an evidentiary hearing in front of an administrative law judge.

Why Do Humans Kiss?

Chemistry - literally.

[K]issing helps heterosexuals select a mate. Women in particular value kissing early on. Saliva is full of hormones Gustav-Klimt_The-Kiss_ArtExand other compounds that may provide a way of chemically assessing mate suitability-that's the biological brain stepping in.

.While kissing, couples exchange 9 milliliters of water, 0.7 milligrams of protein, 0.18 mg of organic compounds, 0.71 mg of fats, and 0.45 mg of sodium chloride, along with 10 million to 1 billion bacteria, according to one accounting.

.Not every culture is down with the full-on mouth kissing enlivened by a wandering tongue. That seems to be a modern, and Western, convention, perhaps from the last 2,000 years, says Wlodarski. A study published in 2015 found that less than half of the cultures surveyed engage in romantic, sexual kissing.

There's evidence-at least from written history-that in the past, kissing was primarily mutual face or nose rubbing, or even sniffing in close proximity. In Hindu Vedic Sanskrit texts, kissing was described as inhaling each other's soul.

The University of Southern California held a "Consent Carnival" on Thursday to try and teach students how to have sex under the new intrusive and authoritarian "affirmative consent" standards. These standards mandate that sex be more of a contractual agreement than a passionate act, requiring students to engage in a question-and-answer session for every type of sexual activity, even hand-holding and kissing.

One of the booths featured at the carnival was a "kissing booth," which provided students with a five-step checklist to kissing someone without sexually assaulting them.

Night of the Judas Nachos

The trouble began late last year in New Orleans. I'd been searching for a voodoo store to buy some of the latest curses when I happened upon a shop selling hundreds of beautiful sauces, all of varying strength, colour and composition.

I settled on two. One was mild but flavoursome, the other a little more zesty. A further display was at the counter. "This is our hottest sauce," explained the young attendant. How hot? "Even our regular customers are scared of it." Her eyes shone with mischief, and I handed over the extra $20.

The reason for this sauce's wicked potency is bhut jolokia - the evil ghost pepper. Without knowing it, I had found my voodoo curse.

Back home, these three new sauces added to an already-excessive supply. To reduce the sauce surplus, I recently hosted a round of Judas Nachos. The game is simple enough. Fifty or so corn chips are spread out in a single layer on a large tray. They are sprinkled with cheese and baked, then a non-participant applies a few drops of mild sauces to the majority of chips.

A number of chips equal to the number of players, however, are weaponised with the hottest juice available. In our case, that meant the ghost pepper sauce obtained from my Louisiana enchantress. You can see it in the image above, third from the right.

The rules, too, are simple. Working clockwise around the table, participants take turns selecting and eating their mystery chips. If someone strikes a Judas Nacho, they are permitted to withdraw. Well, I say permitted, but other options are generally not available. A full-strength Judas Nacho will usually take down even the hardiest diner.

ISIS Commander Begins Demonstrating Beheading Techniques; Hilarity Ensues

The troopers waited for the Isis commander to begin showing around 20 recruits how to cut the heads off prisoners.

While he was demonstrating cutting motions using knives, axes and a sword the SAS sniper was given the all-clear to open fire. [...]

"The SAS sniper was using a Dan.338 equipped with a suppressor which reduces the sound and eliminates any flash from the barrel.

"He had to aim off by more than a foot.

"He had assumed it would take at least two shots to kill the commander but the first shot hit him in the back of the head.

"One minute he was standing there and the next his head had exploded.

"The commander remained standing upright for a couple of seconds before collapsing and that's when panic set in.

"We later heard most of the recruits deserted."

12 I just finished "The Last Kingdom" because, hey, mostly English. There was a scene at the end that intrigued me.

Uhtred the Godless our hero has raided Cornwall(en) and has retrieved therefrom a Kernewek pagan queen. Alfred, king (sort of), has been kicked out of Wessex. So they both find themselves in the Severn's marshes with Alfred's sick infant; cystic-fibrosis would be my immediate diagnosis. Pagan queen asserts that she can save the prince, with MAGIC - if another child's life is sacrificed. Alfred's son lives. But later, we find Uhtred's son, buried.

I'm looking at this and I'm thinking - "changeling".

I suspect that Cornish witch had agents who have swapped out Uhtred's kid for Alfred's. Now Alfred will raise Uhtred's cuckoo, and Cornish witch will now have Uhtred's undivided attention should Uhtred want further children of Cornish witch's own.

35 Somehow, methinks this sexual authoritarianism only applies to normal, heterosexual interfacing (or anything that gets regular, normal males enjoy). The weird shit is okay. If it would disgust a redblooded normal male, it's fine and dandy. Anything said male likes is problematic.

I'm sure two gay dudes are okay. No affirmative consent there. Hell, the standard for proving lack of consent would probably be greater than proving a negative.

If some 500lb Andrea Dworking looking lesbo prof gets all in some chick's business, that'll be okay as well.

Happy Valentines Day, I Hate You

From the 1840s until the 1940s, one could send a "Vinegar Valentine".

The people sending such cards were usually not either one of the couple. It wasnt the wife sending to the husband or the husband sending to the wife. It was somebody outside, looking in at their relationship and saying, This doesnt conform with whats expected. In that way, they did enforce social norms. Sometimes they seemed to be saying, Change your behavior, or else. Theres almost this threatening element to them.

BCN: Driver Reports Vehicle Being Struck By Crossbow Arrow

A person reported a suspicious circumstance while driving his work truck Wednesday afternoon. At 2:09 p.m. officers met with the victim who said he was driving on Milmont Drive when he heard something hit his vehicle, according to Fremont police. Upon further investigation, the victim discovered a crossbow arrow sticking out of the truck.

Police said the incident is under investigation and there are no suspects or witnesses to the event.

For newer info -- was there a year or two ago and went to the Liberty Station brewpub for Stone Brewing. Had dinner one night and it was so good that we had dinner the next night at the same place -- and didn't repeat a beer or menu item (except I had the same soup -- I couldn't resist -- it was really that good). The food and the beers were top notch.

As an aside, there seems to be a San Diego style in microbrews -- identified with Stone, Ballast Point, and Coronado (and probably others). It's very hops-forward, very Kent Goldings by-way-of-Oregon variations hops-balanced, and very open to improvisation in malt blends to support the desired hop profile. IPA variations abound -- black IPAs, red IPAs, white IPAs, double IPAs, Imperial IPAs....

"Grandpa," the boy asks, "what's a line?'

CIA guys go into full-on intel mode - recruiting animals and building an elablorate network of information-gathering. Their best men run the data through supercomputers, and conclude there is no rabbit, and never was one.

FBI guys go into the forest, set it on fire, and shoot anything and everything that comes running out, and announce the rabbit was killed trying to escape.

Evidence: in 2016, one of the most successful and popular gun designs is his 1911. By contrast, the Wright Flyer of 1903 had become the Space Shuttle of 1982; ENIAC (tubes, 1946) had become the iPad Air by 2015.

neocon + teapartier is me. Sad I guess, but true. It didn't matter to me whether Iraq had WMD or not. I thought it was a great move.

The problem is waging long term war in a democracy. If the action is going to take longer than the people have the will for, then it's best not to take it.

Rummy would have been in and out, but I can't see much difference in that strategy and what has happened with Obama withdrawing.

Anyway, if I thought Trump was not lying about the "fence" policy, I would go that way. On the other hand if I thought I could trust Cruz on the issue, he would be my first choice.

Obama will wait until the Senate comes back and then make a full-time appointment. The question is whether he nominates 1) SJW-type minority/woman to claim Repubs are racist/sexist for not confirming him/her/ze or 2) Souter/Kennedy squish to push the "obstructionist" angle.

There are formal fallacies, which are errors in formal logic, and informal fallacies, which are fallacious, but not by formal logic.

Argumentum ad hominem is of the latter type, and means argument against the person, not the actual question. Smith supports A, but Smith is a son of a whore, so whatever he says is wrong.

A closely related one is appeal to motive. You argue against the motives of a one proposing an argument.

414 I'm a bit of a Trump fan, but, being Canadian, I can't legally vote for him.

Some observations: He sure is polarizing, eh? He's obviously a successful businessman, who has become filthy rich. Undoubtedly a few toes got stepped on, or at least some people think their toes got stepped on. He's on the wrong side of the Kelo issue, but as a real estate developer, he certainly sees himself as being on the right side, and at least he's honest about it. And, as a property owner in AZ, I do have skin in that game. But I don't lose sleep worrying that I might get Kelo'd out of my house, should Trump occupy the Oval Office.

He has managed to shift the Overton Window on the illegal immigration issue, and for that reason alone, has done a great service to conservatives, even if he is not one himself.

Some of the Trump super supporters seem to think he's the Second Coming of Jesus, and take it a personal affront if one of his many flaws should be mentioned. But, on the other hand, some of his detractors seem to think he's Satan incarnate, and spew out spittle-flecked rants to that effect.

Would Trump make a great President? I don't know, and of course events can overtake the man. I do believe that he truly loves America, and would try to be a good President, which can also be said of most of the others in the GOP race. The Democrats, not so much.

419 American-born Communist brothers decide they want to emigrate to the USSR, but aren't a hundred percent sure.

They decide to flip a coin to see who goes first. Once he gets there and settles down, the winner will write a letter back to the other, telling him how it is.

They work out a code - if the letter is telling the truth, and the USSR is great, it will be in black ink; if not, it will be in red.

The winning brother goes over, and after a few months, the brother back in the states gets his letter.

"My dearest brother and comrade! Life in the USSR is even better than we'd been told. I have a nice apartment, a good job, and a wonderful life. The museums and concert halls are spectacular, and the shops are full of every variety of food.

Come at once, and bring a bottle of red ink when you do."

422 So, here in Indiana, there is this movement started by Gov. Pence...whom I have major issues with by the way. It's about making roads and bridges safer, but ultimately increasing the gas tax.

The flyer sent out says that at least 2,000 bridges in the State are structurally unsound. It goes on to say, "Is your family's life worth a few extra cents?" That royally ticks me off.

As if the fact that I am against a gas tax increase, I am also cold-hearted and don't care if a bridge collapses somewhere.

Pence brags about the surplus in the state. Why not use that surplus for repairs then? To me, roads and bridges...especially unsafe ones....should be taken care of by the gov't and by the taxes I already pay. They should already be fixing them! Not....not fixing them and then using it as a way to bump up taxes.

Indiana is already in the Top 10 of the highest gas taxes in the country (last I knew). An additional 6 cents would almost certainly put it in the top 5.

Not at all. Current gas taxes should cover roads, and would if 100% of them went to said purpose. Naturally, this is not the case and it goes into general funds.

Now that gas prices have cratered, naturally Pols want to tax it, never admitting that prices will inevitably go back up.

Gas here is about $1.50. Try and get a Pol to vote for a tax increase that disappears when gas hits $2.00. No way in hell they will do that, cuz they know it will vanish.

452 I called a rep one time and said, "Stop making laws. Just stop. Don't make any more laws."

"But that's what we are elected to do."

Doesn't someone have a rule somewhere that if they pass a law they have to repeal one first? I wish we could get even better odds than that.

I don't know if that is in effect anywhere in Canada. If it is, it's certainly not gathering a lot of comment. And if such a law were not really well written, it would be easy to game it. Find some archaic law, long unenforced, and repeal it. "Hey! We're having our guns seized, but it's now totes OK to tether a goat to a parking meter."

I read about a cruise ship picking up a bunch of cuban migrants out on the open sea.

If I were on said cruise ship I'd be annoyed and upset. For one, you are letting people on the boat that you have no clue who they are. They could have weapons. Captain Phillips, anyone?

Now, the boat is supposed to contact the USCG, as well as drop migrants off at the next port, which is probably the next day or day after. What do they do with these folks in the meantime? Put them in the brig? Or, are they allowed to integrate with passengers?

I mean....I know these people are desperate, but...I don't like them coming in over the border and I don't like them coming by boat. I can't be hypocritical. However....my feelings as a hypothetical passenger of said boat, which would make me thus one of the more fortunate people on this planet....does it make me a bitch to say, "It bothers me that you picked those people up"?

I believe that it is customary, if not outright required by international maritime law, for vessels to rescue the crew and/or passengers of a vessel in distress, even to the extent of undergoing some risk. By the same token, it would not be unreasonable to keep the rescued persons in some sort of quarantine aboard the rescuing vessel.

501 @495

No I understand that. I am just wondering if I am a bad person because it bothers me.

I mean...all it would take would be a group of halfway smart terrorists to feign distress off the coast of Cuba, some massive ship to pick them up, and then bam....5,000 people dead.

Law of the sea is weird.
Did they hold at gunpoint like the Iranians apparently do? If yes, that is OK. If they were given low-rent berths in the crew quarters and their chow, better file a Congressional complaint.

OK, that's regulations, not laws per se. Regulations which are normally written by bureaucrats with a goal of enforcing a law made by Parliament. I don't know if it has actually been applied yet. Do note that the law was passed by the former Conservative government of Stephen Harper, and we've since had a Federal election, which bought to power the useless Liberal twit Justin Trudeau. I expect them to give the law lip service, or simply find work-arounds if it gets in the way of their goal of fleecing the taxpayers.

521 I mean...all it would take would be a group of halfway smart terrorists to feign distress off the coast of Cuba, some massive ship to pick them up, and then bam....5,000 people dead.

Posted by: TickledPink at February 15, 2016 02:12 AM (F5hTl)

That would amount to piracy, and I believe even Obama would have to respond to piracy in American waters, or face impeachment.

I expect a savvy captain of a cruise ship would approach any "vessel in distress" slowly and cautiously, and examine the vessel with binoculars to see if there were any signs of deception. And getting people on board such a ship isn't just matter of opening a door. They had to swarm up a rope ladder, or be hoisted up in a small boat. Any sign of a weapon, and the captain could simply order, "All ahead full!"

Well, since somebody raised the question, Hitler treated Himmler pretty well - "my loyal Heinrich".

Until the end. Somehow the boss got wind of Himmler's comical and fruitless efforts in April '45 to set up a "separate peace" with the western Allies, as the Reich neared its final chapter. This was very no bueno with Adolf.

So in his final political testament, done just before he shot himself, he kicked Himmler out of the party and stripped him of his state posts (Goring, too, for basically just being a jackass, and for sending a message from the south, where he'd fled, announcing he was succeeding to the position of Fuhrer on the assumption that Berlin had already fallen).

Thus ends tonight's odd historical digression.

573 Gah I can't stand it! Sorry C!!

Bruce,

Hitler didn't want a war with the U.S., and he didn't think we would enter the war. He also did not want a war with the English.

He wanted to destroy the French as payback (who wouldn't), but the English and the Americans he considered, if not equals to the master race, at least tolderable and people he could be allies with.

Also, think, Dunning-Krueger applies here too. Perhaps, pride is a better word? The Germans were limited to a 100K army. During the time they were constrained by the WWI treaties, they seemed to be helpless. Then suddenly they conquered Eastern Europe. How is that possible?

No one realized the manufacturing might of the USA . Hell we didn't even know what we could do.

So then I started a syllogism and ended it with a huge ad hominem taken from King Lear...the best ad hominen ver

To which I added that farmer was a methodist

Later though I took back the methodist slur to note that even a bull-dyke is not as bad as a methodist

All of that is something we call Alliusion

the main allusion being to Blazing Saddles

592 Haven't we already had about 3 or 4 "Finnish Rape Video" threads?

I mean, it's funny, but it seems to keep getting posted over and over. Or am I hallucinating?

Anyway, I mention it because I just remembered that at a SlutWalk a few years back I took a video of them training the SlutWalkers how to stop a rapist -- and it was basically exactly the same! :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FM5S-1XEdys

"One of the speakers at SlutWalk was from a group that teaches anti-rape self-defense to women. After seeing their demonstration, I almost cried, it was so pathetic and useless:

As you can see, the "self-defense" instruction was more about boosting women's feeling of self-esteem than it was about actually stopping a rapist. Seriously, a real rape doesn't go according to a script and your attacker won't just stand still and allow you to stick your "bird beak" fingers in his eyes. My only question is: Do these people know their anti-rape techniques are totally ineffective, or do they really think a rapist will run away just because you yell "No!" and try to hit him in the face?"

Posted by: Tim in GA at February 15, 2016 03:16 AM (YLidQ)

You might wish that "every post is if a new day has dawned", but it is objectively not true. As Heraclitus stated, "No man ever steps in the same river twice" -- the water he touched before has since moved on, and the water that is there for the second step was upstream mere moments before.

Any interaction between us in the future will always carry echoes of our interactions in the past, unless we both become stupid or deluded.

But here's where I come down on the side of the Christians, however troubling I find the ramifications -- I believe in redemption. I believe that people can be transformed from a pattern of evil to a pattern of good. I don't believe I can control this.

But I know I must hold myself vulnerable and accept risks to facilitate this happening.

lily-livered, action-taking knave, a whoreson,

the composition of a knave, beggar, coward, pandar,

648 First President in US History to Have Voted to Filibuster a Supreme Court Nominee Now Hopes for Clean Process
May 30, 2009

President Obama's expressed hope today in his weekly address "that we can avoid the political posturing and ideological brinksmanship that has bogged down this (Supreme Court nomination) process, and Congress, in the past" runs against another historical first for the 44th president: his unique role in history as the first US President to have ever voted to filibuster a Supreme Court nominee.

So while there is little indication Republicans intend to filibuster President Obama's nominee for the Supreme Court, Judge Sonia Sotomayor, the GOP will likely invoke the President's unique history whenever he calls their tactics into question.

In January 2006, then-Sen. Obama joined 24 colleagues in a futile effort led by Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., to filibuster the Supreme Court nomination of now-Justice Samuel Alito.

On January 29, 2006, Mr. Obama told George Stephanopulos on "This Week" that he would "be supporting the filibuster because I think Judge Alito, in fact, is somebody who is contrary to core American values, not just liberal values, you know. When you look at his decisions in particular during times of war, we need a court that is independent and is going to provide some check on the executive branch, and he has not shown himself willing to do that repeatedly."
