Don't even bother asking for an explanation. There is nothing in the leftosphere that doesn't defy logic. Supporting this candidate is racist, supporting the other is sexist, yada, yada, yada.
With so much badness in the world, it's a wonder a liberal can even walk into the voting booth without a trigger warning, because candidates' very names are microaggressions. No wonder they need ballot shenanigans to provide a precinct tally. Seriously, it's a good thing they have so many dead people voting for them. The dead have seen it all, and are less offended. These people have tin ears. In a year of massive voter outrage at politicians and political correctness, they go and piss off their own voters by attacking them for racism or misogyny. That didn't work out so well for Albright or Steinem, but Walsh just has to give it a go.
Another white prog friend today was dismissive of the "angry white people" voting for Trump. She has no clue what a bigot she is. The Dems used to be about the working class. Now they want to make a go of it on identity politics, so they deliberately deserted their base. Desertion wasn't enough, now they rub it in by insulting them. I'm not sure it could. There are probably not enough rich, white girls having abortions, and all the poor black girls doing so are more or less the point. If they had to pay for their own, out of their own pockets, there would probably be quite a few less of them. And obviously, if those same poor women who are getting pregnant now could NOT count on the government to support them, many more of them would keep their legs closed in the first place. I think the libertarian solution to the abortion question would be much more effective than the big government/social "conservative" one that has been the Republican Party platform for decades. Following on from the last thread, Catholics in the US vote exactly in the center. As the oldest sub-species of Catholics in the US, I'd bet the Irish vote close to exactly in the center. Many Irish Catholics have a reluctance to identify as Republicans because for too long the party leadership has been dominated by a bunch of country club c*nts. The Scots-Irish think the same way, and for even longer.
Ronaldus Maximus' father was an Irish Catholic from Tipperary, you'll recall, wasn't a Republican at first and was always somewhat of an outsider in the GOP. Posted by: Ignoramus at February 11, 2016 07:06 PM (r1fLd) 254

Because I'm a giver and feel sorry for those without Facebook accounts, here you go. This is from some guy named Mark Russell:
Okay, here's the thing with the Democratic primary: everyone imagines they are supporting the one candidate who can save us from the abyss and feel aggrieved and belittled by the other side. I am personally a Bernie Sanders supporter, but the truth is that this is not a battle between good and evil so much as an awkward contest between two animals who evolved in entirely different ecosystems. Hillary Clinton is like a grizzled hunter in the Amazon. Every day is a battle for survival. She has suffered every venom and poison imaginable and from her time as being the wife of a Democratic governor in a red state to being Secretary of State to the most besieged administration in modern history, she has lived her entire life in a rainforest filled with things determined to kill her. Her political survival instincts have adapted accordingly. Bernie Sanders is like a wallaby. He hails from the benign ecosystem known as Vermont, where he lacks any natural predators. He will be the beloved senator from Vermont for as long as he cares to be. So he hops around wherever he wants, unafraid that anyone might use his words to crucify him. Propose a $15 minimum wage? Just have a friendly chat with anyone who disagrees. Call yourself a "socialist?" Sure, why not? We're all friends here. On the other side of the world, though, if Hillary Clinton channels her inner Eleanor Roosevelt, the Republicans call it a seance. Write a few State Department e-mails from your personal server? Suddenly there's a major Congressional investigation, even though nobody cared when previous Secretaries of State did exactly the same thing. Bernie's instincts have evolved so he feels no danger in exposing his head to say what he thinks, however far afield it may be from current political reality. Hillary's instincts, on the other hand, have adapted in a harsher environment, where extreme cautiousness and distrust are rewarded. Likewise, the two candidates' strengths and weaknesses are a direct consequence of their respective environments. Three decades of jungle warfare against Republicans has left Hillary battle-tested and well-versed in the dark arts of political campaigning. She will, I have no doubt, annihilate whoever emerges from the Republican Convention and be drinking out of their skull by November. But at the same time, this experience has made her reticent to take strong positions, to say things that could be later used against her. She tends to "evolve" rather than stand on principle. Bernie has no such qualms, and has from the very beginning taken principled stands on the Iraq War, universal health insurance, gay marriage, etc. which while controversial at the time, have since been borne out by history. He is the forward-thinking visionary that Hillary is not, but he also seems naively unprepared for the shitwave of dirty tricks and false accusations that will come his way if and when he has to run a national campaign against a Donald Trump or a Ted Cruz. I'm not telling you who to vote for in the Democratic primary. Thanks to decades of self-selecting news coverage, extreme right wing radio, and the derangement induced by the reality that the white male vote is no longer enough to carry national elections, the GOP field has been reduced to an incoherent fever dream of xenophobia and obsolescence. Either Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders would be infinitely preferable to anyone in that mental ward. This primary is not a choice between good and evil, as some Democrats have made it out to be, but rather the choice between different types of leaders, the visionary vs the tactician, whose approach to politics has largely been forged by differences in environment rather than character. I'm not playing this game of yours. An abortion isn't homicide. You and I both know its the willfully killing of a human being, its just legal now. That doesn't make it any less murder, its just legal murder. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at February 11, 2016 07:35 PM (39g3+) 374
I used to be pro-abortion, so I understand how hard it is to let go of that viewpoint.
Here's an article on Kermit Gosnell: http://theatln.tc/1plpuTU Please take a look at the picture and tell me if you think that is a clump of cells or a child. Gosnell thought it was a clump of cells and joked about killing them. It is a slippery slope and we should not have gone down it. I like to remind pro abortion folks that birth control is covered under Obamacare and can even be picked up at the supermarket (if you like the kind that also prevents STDs). To this little "l" libertarian, you sound like an anarchist. As a society, we still need to define when does infanticide begin. For Hillary, it's not until "it" is discharged from the hospital. If up to me, I'd pick a 40 - 60 day "quickening" which has a scientific basis and comports with some religions. Some insist it's at conception, and they're not wrong but this belief doesn't have broad national political support. Because of the PP videos the Overton window on this issue can be moved on late term abortions. I'd suggest that the Pro-Life movement focus on this right now. When Cruz's position on abortion gets more widely known, if he's the nominee it'll be a negative in the general. Posted by: Ignoramus at February 11, 2016 07:51 PM (r1fLd) 444

255 we should lay a liveborn premie in front of them and ask them to abort it.
****** I was born 2 months premature and I was 2 lbs. 8 oz when born. My twin died, I somehow managed to hang on - in the era before neo-natal intensive care units. So, I'm a bit touchy on this subject. I spent much of the first year of my life in the hospital and needed surgeries. The same sort of people who told Lauren to get rid of her child would have longed to leave me on a table to die. Neonatalogists who fight for the lives of those tiny babies are heroes to me. I find it absolutely obscene that a few blocks away from the closest NICU - where those babies are struggling for the lives, other babies are being hacked to bits. The unlucky ones. The ones whose humanity is denied because their mothers don't want them. I frequently think a country so morally decayed it permits this deserves every bad thing it's got coming to it. Lauren, hugs and prayers for you and your little one. Posted by: Donna&&&&V (a white) (whitely brandishing ampersand privilege ) at February 11, 2016 07:56 PM (P8951) 463
Abortion has been imposed by Federal agencies and Private agencies that benefit financially. The majority of the American public has always apposed publicly funded abortion. The Hyde Amendment has been around for a long time and has been circumvented by State and Federal agencies.

It's funny in a way though because my actual opinion of women who abort is far softer than my opinion on the subject of abortion in general.
A society that celebrates killing is to be despised. A woman who finds herself abandoned (and let's get real here men, most abortions from women who aren't women's studies degree holders happen because the man doesn't step up) and pressured and has an abortion is much more sympathetic, if severely misguided. Moo,
I will tell you this. I was relieved when I turned against abortion. Because the position you are trying to hold is like arguing how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. You are trying to figure out that one spot in time where it goes from being okay to kill to not okay. We make medical advances all the time in premature babies survival rate. If you want to continue to go that route, say that it's okay to take a morning after pill. But if that doesn't do the trick, the woman needs to look at other options. Well in fairness, unless it is an indisputable error in fact, hardly anyone ever admits they are wrong on the Internet. For instance, back in the day, I used to be pro-death-penalty, but it was Internet arguments which gradually changed my mind on the issue. Now I am anti. I worded it too strongly. I know that there are good men who fought to save their child and had no say in the matter at all and had to live with what the woman did. But I've just seen so many women who tell their boyfriends/husbands/"special friends" that they're pregnant only to be told "Well, you're getting rid of it right?" or "You should have an abortion" or "I will fucking make you have an abortion" and then those women are left completely broken, and often abandoned, after they follow through with the demands. What changed my mind was the partial birth abortion thing. I really did believe them when they said it was rare. So it seemed like something that would only be considered in very special cases. But that was a lie. It was something that was done all the time. And it's wrong. You can't do a partial birth abortion on a clump of cells. It's done as a late term abortion, on a baby that could actually survive if delivered. The Gosnell case was the end of my acceptance of their arguments. They did not inspect that clinic for 17 YEARS because it might have resulted in fewer abortions. The man killed women too, as I like to point out to people who say that women only die from abortion when it's illegal. That's not true either.
Gerald Van Der Leun at American Digest has a personal story about the abortions he was part of. http://bit.ly/1TVLfuG I'd encourage you to read it, as it's from a man's point of view and from someone that was pro abortion once. Its virtually impossible to put someone to death, and doing so requires an incredibly high level of certainty and legal proof challenged over and over through multiple levels of courts. Humans are not perfect, so mistakes can be made, but as human legality go, the system in place is just about as good as it possibly could be. Innocent people do not get put to death.
And ultimately... nobody is innocent, anyway. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at February 11, 2016 08:20 PM (39g3+) 535

Ted Bundy escaped from a Colorado prison and went on to murder more women. As long as these people live, they are a threat. There simply is no way to ensure that they will not escape. If you could do that, I might reconsider. I do believe that some people are so evil and have committed such terrible crimes that they have forfeited their humanity.

Who are you to decide that Human 1 gets to live and Human 2 doesn't? When I said I'm OK with abortion at say 12 weeks but not at 30 weeks, the argument against that is well about about 11.99 weeks. What is it between 11.99 and 12.0 weeks that magically changes a clump of cells into a human? OK. Remember it isn't cruel or unusual, its cruel and unusual: both. Putting someone in solitary is cruel but not unusual. Forcing someone to wear a sandwich board saying they are a loser is unusual, but not cruel. Putting someone feet first into an industrial shredder is cruel and unusual.
The point people seem to not comprehend about criminal sentencing is that its supposed to suck. That's the point: we punish people by punishing them. Prison is supposed to suck. Its supposed to be miserable and awful when you break the law and are punished for it. There's no reason for it to be sadistic and deliberately horrible, but its even worst to be too easy on the prisoner. The second purpose of punishment is to take someone away from society to protect society and demonstrate that some things will not be permitted. Sometimes that message has to be permanent. The death penalty is a standard we set on human behavior.
If you believe there is nothing, absolutely nothing, that merits the death penalty, that is your right. However, if there are acts by people so vile that those carrying out that act do not deserve to be in the human race, then enforce the death penalty. Note, this is different that abortion, which is an act on a human that had not acted, merely existed. Posted by: NaCly Dog at February 11, 2016 08:32 PM (u82oZ) 578

The Law is a human institution, and therefore an imperfect one, but for all that, we do not discard the validity of a given human action or decision merely on the basis of the possibility of error; 2) "Deserve" has got nothing to do with it. To execute a criminal is to remove forever the possibility of the executed person ever again making war against his fellow human beings. The Netherlands is allowing children to decide if they want assisted suicide. There are some things, like abortion and assisted suicide where people would be inclined to say it's okay. It proves to be a slippery slope, where it's difficult to draw a line.
I would be okay with restricting the death penalty and making it rare. My neighbor's teenage daughter was raped and murdered. We were at home and didn't notice anyone at the house when this happened. A friend of the family came by to take her four-wheeling. He took her off into the woods and raped her. Then he slit her throat so she couldn't tell. It was pretty easy to determine the killer. He is in jail because my neighbor did not want to go through a death penalty trial. And word is that the guy bragged about killing her, said it was just like slitting a deer's throat. I used to have a view similar to ace's and moo's. I wasn't a militant supporter of abortion rights, it was actually a pretty minor issue for me, but I just didn't see an early stage fetus as a child.
But the more I thought about it the less I could find a logical argument why a fetus wasn't a child. Life is life. But I didn't get to where I am by other people yelling at me or calling me immoral. That never works. Just like quitting smoking or losing weight, the only way it works is if the person themselves is open to the idea. And yes, I absolutely support the death penalty for capital crimes and if you can't see the distinction between an innocent an someone who has gone through what is likely decades in our criminal justice system before they are finally put to death then I can't help you. No, you aren't. You're burning strawmen.
Posted by: Lauren at February 11, 2016 08:37 PM (f3Iw2) __ Let's try again. You told me it's arbitrary to decide when a clump of cells becomes a human, therefore to err on the side of caution, no abortions should be allowed since you can't know the exact second a clump of cells becomes a human. I'm asking you why the same standard doesn't bother you with regards to capital punishment, which is also arbitrary. At what imaginary line is it OK for the state to kill a "bad" guy? How bad does he have to be? Answer the question. Posted by: Monsieur Moo Moo at February 11, 2016 08:41 PM (0LHZx) 606
...Do you kill that person...
I pray that never comes up. If someone threatens me and mine it could happen. Who lives in a community that encourages mad dog behavior? A lot of big cities. Why do they live there? Because they are going to be a big name in TV and Movies. Why do those communities exist? Because sociopaths are drawn to politics. Because if you solve the problems the grateful public kicks you out and puts in someone who promises them a free lunch. Posted by: scorecard at February 11, 2016 08:41 PM (CRXed) 607
One thought I've had to get around the problem of the State convicting and executing people is that, after a conviction in court, family members or loved ones of the victim should have to push the button or pull the lever or whatever, rather than an employee of the State. If they decline, then the sentence would be automatically commuted to life without parole.

Yes you can. Amphimixis. It isn't arbitrary. It is clearly defined. Posted by: Lauren at February 11, 2016 08:43 PM (f3Iw2) 612
600 Well, that one is simple. It is supposed to be the jury, that makes the decision whether the crime is horrible enough for a death penalty. That is supposed to be the way to prevent abuses. I'm not sure what you can do to enforce people to take that duty seriously.
Posted by: notsothoreau at February 11, 2016 08:40 PM (5HBd1) Not exactly. Whether the commission of and conviction for a crime makes one subject to the death penalty is a matter of law. A jury cannot apply the death penalty to, say, grand theft auto. Posted by: Insomniac - Pale Horse/Death 2016 at February 11, 2016 08:43 PM (kpqmD) 613
For those concerned about potential prosecutorial misconduct in capital cases, the example of Imperial China is worthy of adoption:
A judge found to have sentenced an innocent to any of the various punishments - torture, amputation, execution - then in use was himself subject to the identical treatment. Posted by: Your Decidedly Devious Uncle Palpatine, Still Accepting Harem Applicants at February 11, 2016 08:43 PM (/33sy) 614

539 Ted Bundy escaped from a Colorado prison and went on to murder more women. As long as these people live, they are a threat. There simply is no way to ensure that they will not escape. If you could do that, I might reconsider. I do believe that some people are so evil and have committed such terrible crimes that they have forfeited their humanity.
Posted by: notsothoreau at February 11, 2016 08:20 PM (5HBd1) Google Kenneth McDuff, who's the poster child for the TX death penalty. He was PAROLED after raping and killing some teens, and went on to torture and rape to death several more women. I'm sympathetic to both sides of the issue, but then I think of McDuff... So which arguments did you find most persuasive? Posted by: Obnoxious A-Hole at February 11, 2016 08:21 PM (QHgTq) The two biggest ones were: 1. I don't trust the state to know with enough certainty that any particular criminal is "guilty enough" to merit a penalty of death, after all, if the state is wrong then the aggrieved party can in principle get compensation but only if they are living 2. Many of the arguments in favor of the death penalty seemed to revolve around the idea of whether the criminal "deserved" to live - I just came to realize that whether someone "deserved" to live or not was a decision that the state ultimately had any authority to make. Sure scumbuckets do really terrible things, and whether someone "deserved" to die is a different question than whether someone ought to be legally executed. Posted by: chemjeff @ Fapplebee's - PuppyMonkeyBaby '16 at February 11, 2016 08:25 PM (+4mdw)" So both arguments are doubts about the competence of governments to administer the death penalty or make moral decision as to who it should be applied to. That seems reasonable, although I kind of think that that level of competence is a minimum requirement for a functioning state. There is also the fact that criminal gangs, which are the most serious competition for power, do enforce the death penalty so, as a practical matter, a functioning democracy ought to be able to defend itself and its citizens against those unelected and malignant organizations. They say they want women's rights, yet they seem to be OK with aborting girls. I don't get it. Posted by: BackwardsBoy There's a theory out there that there's is no sisterhood. That all women see when they look at another female is someone who has screwed or is going to screw their meal ticket. Some would say that Hillary is exhibit A, and if so, who could blame her. She couldn't lose Bill to a "bimbo" until she gets the Presidency. Its a bit of a cynical outlook on the fairer sex but there you are. It would explain your empirical evidence of feminists not giving two shits about baby girls, who in all fairness, many times grow up to be trophy wives.
