53 Good morning all.

From this day in 1944- at Anzio

Feb 11, 1944 - The EZ Dog Journal
Cold, rainy and windy. Generally quiet in morning. 179th moved through Br 1st Div for a try at Carroceto - supported by tanks. Took town but were forced back by heavy fire.
Heavy arty fire at night through entire sector. Finally quieted about midnight.

For those not familiar with events at Anzio, a cluster of buildings known as "The Factory", located at Carroceto (about 10 miles inland from Anzio) became the focal point for a series of attacks and counter attacks, a deadly game of seesaw between the Germans and the British 1st Division. The Brits suffered very heavy casualties in the early weeks of the campaign. Here, the 179th Infantry Regiment gives the British a brief respite in yet another failed attempt to take and hold "The Factory". The British held the left half of the front line at Anzio and the Americans the right.

64 Andrea has nice legs indeed. I don't listen to her or read her, but I think she may be referring to what some call "Conservatism Inc.". It seems the National Review gang decided Trump is not part of their brand and must be taken down. There is a sort of commercial brand some try to claim and profit from.

But the allegedly scholastic thinkers are perhaps not achieving change because their version does not attack problems head on muscle like a Trump can. The squawkers in echo chambers merely argue why the steamroller of commie "liberalism" is not scholastically acceptable. Some have done hard campaigning I guess, but usually are either isolated or marginalized. They have little national clout, even FOX is marginalized and not conservative at its roots, as we now know.

The comment from their fan base sidelines, how devastating such change is, but gleefully trash a guy like Trump that finally takes them on nationally and changes the argument, crashes their narrative, lands solid body blows, and a few on the chin. And they cheer each other on, who can be best at Trump bashing, with no real replacement for him, but protecting their own little world, which he is also crashing. Cruz has followed Trump the Boxer, but struggles on many fronts.

There is still need for the bloggers, but I think that is Andrea's point ... maybe. At least it is the spin I would use.

Posted by: Vic-we have no party at February 11, 2016 07:05 AM (t2KH5)

okay I have to take slight exception to this.
yeah it is kinda silly for the CA people to ban the use of the words "Founding Fathers" since (1) they really were mostly men and (2) referring to them as members of the male gender doesn't really offend anyone alive today.
But with the other examples I don't find them as egregious to be honest. What is wrong with referring to police officers as "police officers" instead of "policemen"? There are female police officers too.
The way I see it, there are two forms of "PC", the "mild" form and the "crazy" form. The mild form is just being respectful of those in your audience. Don't tell ethnic jokes in front of ethnic minorities, that kind of thing. The crazy form is straining to find any reason to be offended, which is stupid. Such as the whole "microaggressions" nonsense.
I think this example is closer to the mild form than the crazy form. I don't think anyone is saying that if you use the word "policeman" to describe police officers, that you are an evil sexist bigot h8r. Instead I think it is rather that when you are referring to a group of police officers, don't specifically single out only the male ones implicitly by the language used to describe them.

Conservatism isn't dead. It's a way of life rooted in human nature that all of us live by, even leftists.

What's dead is the weapons needed to espouse and fight for it. Namely, a political party, the media and most importantly the schools.

What's also dead are the brains of those who say conservatism is dead.

Unless you count your birthdays in the single digits, you have been around long enough to know that liberals' "fair and inclusive" strategy ALWAYS starts with a teensy-weensy "adjustment" to language, policies or standards. Adjust those standards so that five-foot-tall woman can become a firefighter, and everyone is happy! Take gender identification out of this one little place and all those placard-waving loons will just sit down and shut up and we'll all Just Get Along. Ditto for offering driver's-license handbooks in 72 different languages, etc., etc., etc.

Or to put it slightly differently is it in the constitution, does it advance the cause of Liberty at both a personnel or societal level, what would Locke, Burke, et al say about it, does it make motherfucking sense, such as does it make motherfucking sense to change foundational realities that the founding fathers were men to please SJWs.

Women get their own special term, whereas man can mean male, mixed, or female. Mankind, policeman, same deal. Or it was until the feminazis stepped in and demanded they not be "discriminated against" ... language must be changed per their demand. It's a power trip thing for them.

Now it will be written in stone that Snyder poisoned kids (like all republicans do) to save money (to give to the rich, because that's what we do).

Snyder was by far the best candidate for governor of Michigan, but there has to be a training camp where we can send new and prospective officials to learn how to handle crisis situations.

NJ wants to raise minimum wage to $15 an hour.

Check out this scenario. You're an employer with pay of $25 an hour. Your business is very slightly profitable. You pay 25 employees an average of $10 an hour. If you pay them ONLY $1.00 an hour more than you no longer can pay yourself.

Instead of working for free you close your doors and 25 people lose their jobs. How can politicians be so fucking stupid?Posted by: ugg boots at February 11, 2016 07:36 AM (fbovC)
Why should the politician care? He still has his phoney-baloney job. And there are still plenty of other businesses that he can get his bribes from. And if the business closes, so what? Where's the owner going to go? Out of state? The sucker will still be living in NJ, paying ever higher taxes because he's too poor to leave. If every politician in this country woke up each morning pissing their pants wondering if this is the day an armed mob would string them up, this would be a much better place.

.357 Magnum has traditionally been more expensive than .38 Special, even though they too will shoot from the same weapon, but it is also considerably higher performing, and a more capable defense round. I am a cheapskate, but I don't want to pinch pennies if lives are on the line.

As for "incredibly loud", yeah, I would not be in a hurry to fire a magnum load, even a little .22 mag, in a confined hallway. Trying to keep what hearing I have left.

Note though that Mr. Goblin and his criminal pals don't like loud noises. First off, they don't like anything that attracts attention and gets cops called, and powerful muzzle reports do just that. Also, at a purely psychological level, a pumpkin sized fireball plus matching sound effects can be very intimidating.

220 To the left, single payer healthcare is "common f'n sense". Are they wrong? If so, then why?
Posted by: chemjeff at February 11, 2016 07:41 AM (uZNvH)
______________________

We already have one segment of our society experiencing the wonders of single-payer healthcare: military veterans. How's that working out? Do people really want "healthcare" like the VA provides?

Or how about Medicaid, another single-payer example. Poor people who want their head colds treated go to the ER. They don't want to walk or pay for a cab, so they call an ambulance instead. And hey, why not? They're not the ones paying the bills, so what difference does it make?

And how does anyone think single-payer would work in a first world nation that has wide-open borders and millions of third world poor pouring in every year?

Single-payer healthcare would only be "common f*cking sense" if we had a government that was efficient and competent and ethical, closed borders, and a population that was responsible and honorable. We don't have those things, so single-payer would not work.

226 @153 I read the "Calaisienne" speech last night, and was struck with, in the odd context of the translation subtitles being set next to the time references like classicist's lineation or chapter-and-verse, how much the narrative read like something from the Book of Isaiah. Especially the closing lines, "They had only to ask..." Biblical. And not in the nice way, either.

In Europe it is Muslims assaulting women. Perhaps if feminists were not so successful in getting out their message that they do not want to be protected, there might be some men who were willing to protect them.

On the other hand, women have been the fastest growing demographic for new gun purchases so maybe that is what is going on.

we always try to replace it ourselves (see the Car Manual - online if you don't have the hard copy).

There are some that are tricky, but others that are easy to replace.

Otherwise, a small mechanic, or dealership (which will cost you and it won't happen quickly).

Or, if there is an mechanic at a small gas station, while you wait (they may have to order the part), or one hooked to a larger chain store.

The problem is, not wanting to drop your car off for a light.

**disclosure - I didn't read the linked article**I think everyone can agree that offensive ethnic jokes should not be told to the faces of the affected races (though "offensive" is a term that has lost all meaning these days). What I think is being objected to is that "wedge" or "slippery slope" which is evident in such a seemingly-innocuous change as "Founding Fathers" to "Founders."Yes, Abigail Adams and Mercy Warren had the ears of powerful men during the Revolution. Their contributions to the cause of freedom should be acknowledged. But they were, in no sense, "founders," and the term should not be made gender-neutral, because it simply does not reflect the historical fact.If you're willing to distort history by changing "Founding Fathers," then you have no standing to object to any other change the left wants to make in the name of "inclusion."

273 Both Autozone and Advance Auto do free installation, or help in the parking lot. Nice custom, as the day of the gas-station mechanic are largely past. When wife first got her new 10-year-old Saab, she thought she'd just throw some new wiper blades on there. By a freak occurrence, their one grown-up senior guy managed to put one of those running splinters into the windshield. They happily, without threat or lawyering, popped for a new windshield. We gave them a little business to make up for that.

Personally I prefer the Advance, because the chicks at the counter, though sometimes a tad hefty and tatted-up, are hawt and speak CarGuy real good.

For some values of "put it in".

There are cars nowadays where doing a headlight bulb replacement requires extensive front end disassembly. Hours of labor.

Incredibly, there are some modern cars where doing a headlight bulb replacement requires a trip to a dealership to have the vehicle computers "recalibrated" afterwards, on the special machines which only are owned by the dealership.

Maybe I misunderstood, but I got the impression that you are a Cruz "supporter" and not one of those Trump "followers". When it comes to politics I don't believe those words convey much of distinction. But even if they do we can both agree that Trump has his followers and supporters and Cruz has his followers and supporters.

291 258-that's actually tame for the mutawwa.

When I taught there in 2000, the mutawwa declared Pokemon "Haram" because one of the drawings looked vaguely similar to the Star of David, and they decided that the evil Jews (TM) were sneakily using a Japanese product to steal the hearts, minds and money of upright Saudi children. Thus, no Pokemon games, cards, cartoons, etc in the Kingdom.

My 2cd grade students were not having this. Actual quote from a Bangladeshi boy: "Pokemon isn't haram, Pokemon ROCKS!!!"

I was so proud.

Incredibly, there are some modern cars where doing a headlight bulb replacement requires a trip to a dealership to have the vehicle computers "recalibrated" afterwards, on the special machines which only are owned by the dealership.

370 Democrats have been hoodwinking, outright lying, to centrist GOP voters for decades, appealing to their social instincts and using them to win elections, whereafter they farm those same people for taxes, encourage their daughters to get abortions, and move illegals into their neighborhoods.

It's hardly the end of the world, hardly idiocracy, for the GOP to finally return the favor with Trump, and trick centrist dems into voting for someone who will put a stake through their party's heart. And (AND!) it's not even being done by the party! The voters are doing it themselves! Trump is also normalizing extremist positions on issues which it was previously not even polite to discuss, creating room for congress to maneuver on border security, as one example.

Trent Lott's "Chris Christie made an in-kind donation to the democrat party when he attacked Rubio" comment makes me sick. No, idiot. Support for Rubio is an in-kind donation to the democrats.

The popular vote is a large and unwieldy tool with which to combat Washington's tentacles. The voters do not have much of a choice. *Should* they choose Cruz (yes) is not the question: can they choose Cruz (there is still a good chance this happens) in an environment where the republican brand is so damaged and the public attention span is too pathetically small to absorb a commercial, much less a serious discussion of government overreach in the teeth of "Black Lives Matter!"

375 Oh, man, from Vic's link:

At least a dozen email accounts handled the "top secret" intelligence
that was found on Hillary Clinton's server....

The official said the accounts include not only
Clinton's but those of top aides --- including Cheryl Mills, Huma Abedin,
Jake Sullivan and Philippe Reines --- as well as State Department Under
Secretary for Management Patrick F. Kennedy and others. There is no
public evidence they were authorized to receive the intelligence some of
which was beyond Top Secret."

Unless I've missed something, this doesn't indicate whether the aides were using the Hillary email server accounts themselves, or if they were using their State accounts to email these docs to Hillary's private account (on her server). I guess it would be nice to know if they are the sources of said top secret info, and how they obtained it, or if they had assistance at the source agencies (e.g. a CIA doc that was illegally made available to, say, Huma or Cheryl) so that there are others outside of State also ensnared it this crime.

Regardless, I like that they've caught at least one of them lying in his testimony. Too bad Huma was granted a private session to testify...

I understand that the original reason that the prisoners were not sent to Johnson Island in the Pacific was that government lawyers did not want to make the trip. 426 >>And how is that different from the Cruzers, Rubioids, Kasichers and Heb!'s supporter?

If you've been following this race even remotely I would think it would be obvious. Rubio just had a disastrous debate performance and it cost him dearly in NH, possibly well beyond that.

Trump called Cruz a pussy and not only did it not hurt him, he actually went up.

I don't know why Trump fans would even try and deny what is happening. They have a candidate who appears to be beyond conventional rules and his words and actions don't hurt him and he is only getting stronger.

I cynically assume that Trump's border security push is going to be no more durable than were Trump Steaks and Trump University, but you can't blame the guy for going after an easily exploited point that everyone else was pointedly ignoring.

Our County has passed legislation allowing the billing of individuals for ambulance service.
Till now, it was included in your Property and Income taxes as an available service with no additional cost.

But, free ambulance rides to the ER for a head cold began to strain the system.

On the downside, if your healthcare insurance refuses to pay it, the individual will not be charged for the amount.

So in effect, nothing has changed to alter citizen behavior, simply a mechanism to recoup cost from the insurance company.

435 Sorry for making it personal at the end there Max, that was uncalled for. And probably projection.

I'm very frustrated because I think that Trump's abilities as a communicator (don't scoff) and his high media profile, make him a special case as far as electability. And it's a fucking disaster that we couldn't find someone to beat Obama. I don't care who beats them, the global socialists need to lose. Like many others here, I'd love to see the GOPe bleed out first, too.

The frustration comes from watching him speak and basically sound like he has a fucking speech impediment. That doesn't actually seem to hurt his core support, but what about broader support...

I think he's learning, and obviously there's plenty of time til November. But I really don't like seeing the obstinance of horde members who claim they'll never ever vote for him, ever.

We all sucked shit and voted for Mitt. What if Donald is telling the truth? Isn't it important we vote for him?

Unless you're talking about cats, it's a cussword. Profane? Well, in common parlance, "profane" is generic for cusswords. Trump did call Cruz that by repeating it. It's the old "saying by not saying" ploy. He could have just left it alone, but he made a big deal out of repeating it.

Just like he mouthed the f' word and then complained when Fox bleeped it making it seem like he said it. He said it, just like I just did.

It's one thing I really detest about the foulmouth. I don't know if he is really just a guttermouth, or thinks it gives him some kind of common-man appeal, but it's distasteful.

But I'm very old school, and think people should be ladies and gentlemen in speech, especially in public and especially if you're looking for votes, much less when you're talking about your political opponents. I don't use such language myself. That's why I think Trump's an asshole.

Further, that Kasich, Christie, and Rubio while in positions of elected government power all cozied up to Obama for spoils and dare not mention this fact. Jeb obviously intends to suck up to any Democrat in sight if elected. Basically only Carson, Cruz and Trump are free from the taint of Democrat collusion while in government!

But what if Trump is telling the truth?

And, even if he's lying, what if he replaced global socialist goons in every layer of the federal government with people who will be 50% transparent and 50% competent?

Is that not worth voting for?

I find the full-bore anti-trumpism mystifying. I've always thought he was an obnoxious blowhard. But if you agree with Buckley's "phone book > harvard faculty" quote, and if you think Trump looks like what any random asshole would look like if he stumbled into 10 billion dollars... isn't that exactly the breath of fresh air the country needs?

With full knowledge of the risks a Trump presidency entails (foreign policy cluelessness coupled with ego, refusal by the bureaucracy to enforce his changes, a pissed off and uncooperative congress, a media looking to trip him up, the immediate detonation of the debt bomb, etc etc) isn't the chance that someone not Of The Washington Body could actually assume the role of president worth those risks?

470 "I can change to anything I want" ... Trump

Greta had just asked him if he is changing his bad language, as she was quoting a Trump fan query.

"As I get closer to the goal it's going to get different". He is specifically talking about the language and the presidential persona a fan wanted from him. But so many claim that means ... "see, proof he will change all his policy". Then they claim "see, Trump fans are so blind and stupid, they will let him change to anything"

Those attacks are such dishonest crap. If Trump is so bad, why does it such grasping at straws to attack him? There is little talk of the huge inspired crowds, but MSM/FOX will report on any bad word all day long.

There clearly is concern he may not do some of his biggest promises, followers are not blind. But heading the right direction is a big start. There is also concern the other practiced liars will sell us out like they always have. So what is the best risk? Trump has changed the dialogue.

He hadn't remembered and looked totally panicked when I handed him his gift. He said, "Uh, er, I got something for you too" and went into his tool shed out back and disappeared for 10 minutes. He came back with a box of tools - a hammer, a regular and Phillips screwdriver, a wrench, nails, etc. All dusty. He had a zillion tools so it was pretty obvious he had just tossed tools in a box. I lol'ed.

And I still have and use those tools.

490 At this point what is readily seen about Trump is that he is a much better politician than the opposition.

For one thing, he's been great at running in Iowa and New Hampshire without spending any money on GOTV or other traditional "ground game" stuff. He is counting on enthusiasm.

For another thing he is absolutely fantastic about dealing with petty crap from others. Do you think for even a minute he would stand for being blamed for the Flint debacle were he in Rick Snyder's position (that idiot)? NFW.

The substance of his policies matter less in the election at this point than his political skills.

That is actually a rational argument in favor of voting for Trump. I am still not convinced but it is more persuasive than a lot of the Trumpbot assholes who casually toss around insults at anybody who slights their version of the Messiah.

One of the interesting possibilities of a Trump presidency might well be his handling of a reluctant bureaucracy. Obama has already established the precedent of an unaccountable President ruling by decree and ignoring Congress and the courts.

Trump could fire an entire department full of rebellious bureaucrats and contract out the work to a private company. Like Reagan and the Air Traffic Controllers, he probably would not have to do it more than once to get enthusiastic compliance from the rest of the government workers.

Of course, that could just be me parsing his broken english, based on an interview I can't find right now, into what I'd like him to say.

And based on this chart owy.mn/1muIp29 it's not a silver bullet. I absolutely get the Let It Burn position. But it is already burning and nothing is going to stop it before a lot of wealth and prosperity is destroyed. Good chance of more war and instability is also on tap. I just question if Trump is the guy I want leading through the burning and rebuilding process.

Cruz has never been my favorite. He just rubs me the wrong way despite the fact that I agree with most of his policies. And while he may have instances of straying he is a pretty reliable conservative voice.

I'd vote for Trump if he is the nominee but not with a ton of enthusiasm or confidence. I'd rather see Cruz get the nod and given the disarray on the left I think this is an election he could win.

She already has offered reparations, a/k/a, "moar free shit."

She's going to weep alongside the devoted mothers of those poor little Dindu Nuffins who were gunned down by the racist police.

Considering
that the term "black Americans," rather than bringing to mind a Ben

Because American Blacks may be deluded about politics, but they aren't stupid.

An old friend did a lot of business in Africa in the 1980s. He was on a plane leaving some shithole one day and sat down next to an American woman (Black) who was also doing business. He had been shaken down for his electric shaver by the customs official (not uncommon) and was in a pissy mood. She too had been extorted out of something, and they commiserated.

As they taxied away from the terminal, the woman looked at him and said, "Thank God for slavery."

599 An interesting notion about how media works in this country today, given the state of "advanced technology" and all, is that news from Mexico, where vast areas of that country are out of the control of their government and where violence is worse than in Iraq, in this country, its neighbor, we know relatively little about this.

Just an observation.

Posted by: Mr Macca Bean at February 11, 2016 10:48 AM (4ng05)

600 A LOT has changed over the last four years, but much of it is papered over and ignored. Europe is burning, Middle East North Africa is a mess, Obama gave Iran the path to the bomb and $150B that Kerry said will partly fund terrorism, and the stock market is showing signs that seven years of zero interest and $4T QE are only blowing more bubbles and allow the government to spend us even deeper into financial "hell".

The globalists don't mind, it may be part of the Soros style plan to break down the Western powers that be. We need an America First president that believes western values are worth fighting for. This is why I think Trump the builder is the best choice, and he has said the deeper things along those lines, things that resonate with Americans.

Populism is not always wrong. I'll take a young no executive worldly experience Cruz, but I think the dire straits and stormy seas we are in require a stronger man at the helm. The bully pulpit would be strong, extra-constitutional measures not required. If the DOW keeps dropping that seems to favor Trump. Same with unrest and jihadists in Europe and Trump's Muslim pause.

Trump or Cruz ... but the Orwellian hatefest over Trump at times would only give us Hillary. Too bad Walker didn't have the whole package ... but he just wasn't ready, and was bloodied from the union wars against him I guess. Movin' on.

Except in his disagreement with the uniparty over immigration and the refugee program, I really don't see Trump as an outsider. He and our vote selling "representatives" are the two faces of Janus. Both are responsible for the get along, go along kleptocracy that is robbing us blind and destroying our Republic.

THAT is the system that Trump is comfortable with and, even now, he turns to that system for solutions. From his praising of light rail to his insistence that he will make sure everyone will have health insurance (he doesn't say how but I feel very comfortable saying that it would involve bigger government) to praise of, and insistence that he will make deals with, the very people that are the problem in Washington; nothing Trump has said other than his determination to build the wall leads me to think that he is in anyway inclined to "clean house" like his supporters believe he will.

The implication of this is that capitalism is still a predominant factor in western economics. That's BS. Hell, it doesn't really even predominate in this country anymore. It is way, way, way over-regulated to be considered capitalism, and what little apparent capitalism that does still exist is corrupted by the marriage of the mega-capitalists and government - crony-capitalism, or as we used to say in the old days - corruption.

Free market capitalism, if allowed to thrive, would solve the problems that we have.

RIP, Mr. Kelly. That pic raises a question. Lately, I see an awful of of videos and stills presented this way, normal-looking image in the middle, flanked on either side by the same image, or portions thereof, partially grayed out. Why? It sure looks dumb.

Yes, there was a depression. FDR took a normal down cycle and turned it into a depression. And the stock market crash actually had very little to do with it.

636 @631 Size. Matters.

Vic, of course. I mean there was no "Hoover" depression. The down-cycle that got out of control (or "in control," as we might see it) was not the result of internal economic factors (it's always blamed on margin plays), but of the downward drag of the rest of the world's dismal financial conditions.

The world was in depression but Europe (minus Germany) bounced back sooner because they did not have FDR and his merry band of socialists/communists continually screwing with their economy. Robert Higgs wrote a really good book (Depression, War and Cold War) that looks at the data on this.

639 But all I am saying is that our response to this shouldn't be to toss out ALL of the so-called "PCness" and give ourselves a license to just be rude and crass and boorish. I don't think there is anything wrong with being respectful and mindful of your intended audience. Just because the left goes crazy thinking that every single word in the dictionary is some sort of microagression, doesn't mean that we should react by telling off-color jokes.

Well, there is the practical matter of vetting endorsers. How much time and effort does (or can) a campaign expend to ensure that every endorser who climbs on board is squeaky clean? There's a metric fuckton of preachers out there. Most are decent human beings, some have a few screws loose, and some are outright crooks. How do you tell, aside from the few that are notorious for some misbehavior?

reparations.

Posted by: Vic-we have no party at February 11, 2016 10:50 AM (t2KH5)"

Vic
You might note in my proposal I do not say anything about a moral debt owed by people who never owned slaves to people who were never slaves.

My goal is to reduce the scope of the federal government by greatly reducing the amount of land it controls and to put that land and the resources it contains into the private sector.

The fact that I propose using one of the Democrats' grievance tropes to make that happen ought to amuse you as a soft of political Aikido where the strength of an opponent is used against him. While I don't care about the moral arguments of slavery reparations, the most loyal block in the Democrat coalition cares about them a lot.

Another block in the Democrat coalition, the environmentalist greens finds the idea of transferring millions of acres of land out of direct government control to be abhorrent. Another block in the Democrat coalition, the communists, are horrified at the idea of millions of black people suddenly becoming property owners and thus sharing a whole lot of interests with the middle class.

I view this sort of Slavery Reparations bill as an invitation to the various parts of the Democratic coalition to fight against each other or, more likely, to gang up and defeat the Blacks. Could that be the thing that finally breaks Blacks from their slavish devotion to the Democratic Party? I don't know. Maybe. Before LBJ, most Blacks voted Republican when they could vote. Even if it does not achieve every goal, it will disrupt the Democrats and cause contention among their ranks.
