So I was trying to get this out in the Reagan thread before the hamsters went kaput. If you want to hear some great insight into Reagan before his presidency, I highly recommend the audio book titled Reagan: In His Own Voice.
Along with insight from his wife as well as several of his close friends, it chronicles the four years before he was elected from '75-'79 in which he did short radio commentaries on various subjects. It should still available on iTunes where I originally bought it, however the download isn't available on Amazon or Google Play. I had to purchase straight from the Simon Schuster's site. Here's a youtube link to where he talks about adoption. https://tinyurl.com/zac96q4 Posted by: Dead Parrot Society at February 10, 2016 10:46 PM (AJeMv) 163

That is a different kettle of fish than wishing religious genocide on a group of people who lost ~ 55% of their global population in an assembly line manner. It's a lot like me and the liberal media.... I'd be thrilled with their expanding competition in the highly lucrative "soiled begging hobo" field they helped create these last seven years. I'd never in a million years turn one of their conventions or meetings into a live action rendition of the Aggie Bonfire tower collapse.... but a lot like the Yellowstone Caldera that I am now in the Kill Zone of explosion wise if said Aggie Bonfire Tower Collapse hit the media at a confab I'd be hard pressed to do anything but laugh. So Trump knows only 20%, but others know 100% but are too dumb to talk about the 20%, but in all other respects are super smart, almost too smart. ok Don't sell the steak, sell the sizzle. I hear theaters used to burn some sort of popcorn incense or scent, to make people want popcorn. I'm not sure this is such a big secret. Reagan was the great communicator, and had a matured philosophy of America First. His deficit spending became policy ... that is not conservatism by even the new age definitions. Maybe it's all about the subliminal. The commies work on all sorts of conditioning, and really, the kids are well programmed by school and TV. Society is 35 years further into the commie infiltration and reeducation programs than when we first elected Reagan. Boys that feel like girls get to shower with the girls. Posted by: baldilocks at February 10, 2016 11:10 PM (ys2UW) No kidding. True story time. I had a friend in high school who used to drop acid. He told me about one of his bad trips, where he thought the floor had fallen out all around him with nothing but a dark and bottomless abyss beneath. He related being curled up in a ball on the couch in utter terror for the duration of the trip. I had absolutely no desire to experiment with hallucinogens before I heard that story, and even less after. Posted by: Insomniac - Pale Horse/Death 2016 at February 10, 2016 11:13 PM (kpqmD) 318

Lauren,
I know that company, I have some friends who're religious zealots about it. Advocare. They're big enough to sponsor a NASCAR team, and have some official branding recognition with the NFL, so they're not nothing. But, the shit is hella expensive, and they want you to buy it over n' over and over again. I'll pass. I can get all the morning zip I need with a large McDonald's coffee and being late for a meeting. Evening, Horde.
Update from my last ONT check-in: Saw the specialist, who ordered a whole whack of tests (seven vials' worth of bloodwork!). Got the call today. The good news is, aside from one number being slightly elevated, everything is within the normal range. The bad news is, aside from that one number, which isn't diagnostic in itself, everything is within the normal range--which means whatever's wrong isn't within this specialist's field, evidently, and I'm to follow up with my primary instead. I've had an off-and-on fever for six months. *Something* is very definitely wrong. But no, everything's normal! No help to be had here! Yeah. I've been crying a lot this evening. Normal-range thinking is terribly annoying. "I've been thinking about Trump and how he probably never reads anything.
Nothing. Just watches shit and listens to "his people." Never ever reads. Anything. So this ONT is right up his alley." shyning man I've been thinking about how many straw men are set up about Trump. Then the lecherous ignorant fool straw man is treated like the real Trump, who leads the Republican field, did some great things in NY, is well respected by many big players ... but here and with many bloggers, he only knows 20% and can't possibly know more, must be some big fluke, and other candidates are just bamboozled. Or maybe Trump is smart and clever, a man from Queens that prefers the raw persona, and is working his successful plan. It seems like the widespread hatefest is contagious. I guess Rush was talking about this today ... Trump build a coalition, the big tent, but he gets bashed for it. He gets second they bash him, he dominates across all sectors and still gets bashed. "Let's talk aobut how stupid Trump is" yeah .. you keep talking about that ... it is the populist thing to do in alleged conservative circles. http://tinyurl.com/hfjzr5g Posted by: Illiniwek at February 10, 2016 11:40 PM (5Gpe2) 472

Anyways, MH, Mom had a family tendency for narrowing of the spinal canal and it caused her general issues with balance and continence and such, as well as a lot of pain. The surgery helped quite a bit in all of it, and she was in her late 70's. She recovered very well.
The friend of mine's was from a lifetime of repeated trauma, and the stenosis was threatening to turn him into a paraplegic. It turned out very well for him, but his main bitch is that he can now actually feel all the other parts of him that are broken and arthritic. OTOH, my husband has issues with his back, to the point of massive painkillers at all time, etc. The deal is they said put off the surgery until you cannot work, function, etc, and then do it. That way, if it doesn't work, you are no worse off than when you started. Sounded kinda scary, but then, the great strides they have made in spinal surgeries is encouraging. Scrolling through the comments at high speed because I couldn't stop after scrolling through long cat, I thought I saw a couple comments about jumping across the table to strangle somebody in court? I feels that!
Decades ago, our (failed) business's landlord sued us for back rent, which we agreed to, but he kept tacking on damages, until it amounted to a quarter million, then the first thing they did in court was double that. Our ass was covered all the way. And we had a great lawyer. Landlord said, we did this thing that caused extensive damage (we proved it didn't) without permission. We pulled out the doc where he had given us written permission. He looked shocked that we had the paper proof. Landlord said, we did this other thing that caused extensive damage (a little bit, not extensive) without permission, and we pulled out another doc where he had given us written permission. On the witness stand, he looks at the second doc, and slowly says, "Welllll, it looks like my signature...." At the implication we had forged his sig, when in truth he had just been proved a liar for a second time, our lawyer had to push me back down in my chair. We "lost," ultimately, to the amount we'd agreed to before the whole lawsuit started. Plus more than two years hung up and lawyer costs. Gratifying to know that old con artist must long since be worm food. Posted by: mindful webworker - legalistically at February 10, 2016 11:59 PM (ACs58) 566

Misanthropic Humanitarian,
By all means try the steroid shots - they never did much for me but they do help a lot of people. A word of advice: if you've been prescribed painkillers, take one before you go in for the shots. They smart! Fortunately, they don't take too hideously long to do and even if the steroid part doesn't work, the numbing part should give you a few days peace. Slap that was great. Tenticled one it Has to do with the price per barrel and letting many good people go so that more people can stay employed Posted by: ThunderB at February 10, 2016 11:52 PM (zOTsN) If I might make a suggestion....put together a plan for survival -- then sell it. To both those who stay and those who go. As the Controller for a semiconductor company, I had to orchestrate and implement a massive layoff -- and worked overtime to do it! -- knowing that I was going to be one of those laid-off. But I could honestly say that I believed that the company would survive and that the good people who left and the good people who stayed would prosper despite the current difficulties -- and everyone would be better off staying in a successful company or moving on to a different company than sinking together in a failing company. Posted by: L, Elle at February 11, 2016 12:00 AM (2x3L+) Gotcha covered. It tends to become a habit. I'm one of those older ladies who keep a finger rosary in the car console, just in case, and always have a cheap plastic glow in the dark model to hand out to fidgety boys in the back of church at Mass. St. Michael comes in at the end. And then the prayers for the dead, etc. I'm not sure I can function without my prayers. To be honest, it wasn't always this way, but it gets to be more ingrained as time goes by. Posted by: tcn in AK at February 11, 2016 12:04 AM (+YMhA) 584

What's being sold is not the product, it's the network. The product is entirely incidental. Look. If you invented some new wonderful weight-loss elixir that actually worked, and did not kill people, would you limit your profits by selling through a pyramid organization, or would you go for the big bucks, and get it into Target, and Walmart, and Amazon? Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian at February 11, 2016 12:06 AM (voOPb) If it is about the pain, then ask if they can do a radiofrequency denervation. They do it in my neck, for crappy facet joints that impinge on nerves. Works like a charm for 18 months, and then back in I go for the next round. They basically burn the nerve roots so that the pain signal can't get through. After a while, they heal, and that's when you get it done again. If they just cut the nerve, then it hurts all the time. This was an absolute miracle to me. I had headaches worse than migraines, and this cured it. Now I understand they can do that for the lower back as well. Hot diggity. About 25 years ago my friend kept trying to get me into MLM. First it was the overpriced water filters and then it was Pre-Paid Legal insurance. I didn't bite. Total scams both of them. But he tried and wound up eating a small amount of money and way too much of his time trying to build his network.
Then a few years ago he tried to get me into commodity futures on margin. This was in 2007. So he lost a small fortune in money that he never actually had and didn't pay the taxes on the money he did make. He's NOT a pot dealer right now though. Posted by: Elisabeth G. Wolfe at February 10, 2016 11:29 PM (vRQPU) Hang in there, and scream bloody murder if they put you off. I find that, with the current specialization of health care, most docs have no idea what to do if it isn't their "thing." I also find that they will put you off with something vague and then find a reason to not treat the symptoms. When my husband first had back issues, he saw three different docs, before I finally went with him and stood up and vehemently explained that my husband could no longer make love to me and what was the doc gonna do about that!!! Got his attention, and an MRI, and a referral to an orthopedist and a pain doc. So, sometimes the squeaky wheel... Also, prayers. Posted by: tcn in AK at February 11, 2016 12:14 AM (+YMhA) 623
Anna, yup, that's it. :-)
Believe it or not when the city first put it in the park (Del Valle), they just laid it on the ground; kids were crawling all over it. Finally a few years later in the early 1960s it was placed on a pedestal, which had a bronze plaque mounted on its side listing all of Lakewood's war vets, both deceased and living. Well about five years ago, some idiots actually pried the bronze plaque right off the pedestal, which caused an outcry. Thankfully the City then decided it was time after all these years to get serious about the memorial, so they had the design you see there in the photo drawn up, plus they actually had the Douglas plane *removed and shipped to Arizona* for massive refurbishing. What you see in the photo is what we now have, complete with a mock runway. Needless to say it's been a big hit here in Lakewood. Glad the city finally got serious about it and was willing to spend some money. Posted by: qdpsteve at February 11, 2016 12:15 AM (ntObR) 624

Once you have the best plan you can make, it has to be explained to everyone -- those who stay and those who go -- that splitting apart into those in the boat, and those treading water, is better than everyone riding the boat to the bottom. [i I am walking like I'm 85.
I know the feeling, Caligirl. I was just shy of 40 when my first orthopedist told me I had the spine of an 80 year old. Hell, I was all but scheduled for a two level fusion last fall when my final pre-surgery MRI showed that the level above was starting to go and couldn't handle the increased pressure. It almost seems like doing anything at all is "too much" for my lower back. Posted by: ChicagoRefugee at February 11, 2016 12:31 AM (N+8NE) 660

I know a brilliant cardiologist whose daughter was really sick. He couldn't figure it out. He finally took her to the emergency room. The ER doc figured it out. 613 Tcn, the painkillers thing is getting harder to do thanks to our beneficent overlords at DEA. Can't blame the doctors for not wanting to risk their licenses either. Sure, ODs are down ... but if suicides are up can we really call it progress?

Also, any doctor who starts wringing their hands about dependency or addiction concerns - or even overdose concerns - over a terminal Stage IV cancer patient who's in screaming pain between doses of narcotics, needs to be beaten with a red-hot poker. If he's going to do it, he should do it soon. He's in his 80's. He was a naval attache in an embassy, he was CO of a naval base, he was an XO of an aircraft carrier. I still think the coolest thing he did was flying the planes. I may be getting this somewhat wrong but he had more carrier landings than anyone at one point in time. Or it could be night landings. Over 500. He didn't make Admiral. Again, I may have the story mixed up but you have to do a tour at the pentagon and he didn't want to do that bullshit.
Maybe by the time he can no longer get out of bed, they will have a new sort of surgery that works better. Who knows? I suspect that if the reason were ever found, it would have significant real-world consequences. But until then, it just remains a number theory curiosity. Now The 404Care Fun And Games Begin In Earnest
Went to my plumber cardio today for a regularly scheduled visit. Found out Mt. Sinai has stopped accepting my insurance as of 1/1/16. No one notified me of this fact. At first, the office help tried to blame my insurance, claiming my policy changed; it hadn't. They wanted me to call my insurance company to get a new policy, but I finally got it through their heads that they caused this, not my insurance policy. (Don't know if it's forever or they are renegotiating the contract.) So now I have to scramble to find a new cardio that will accept Medicare patients, not a guaranteed thing at all. I have an appointment with my electrical cardio on Friday, in his office at the hospital I exclusively use as they have been very good to me. The first order of business is to find out if that doctor still accepts my Medicare insurance. If that is the case, then I have to go to a patient office, or some such, to see about finding a plumber cardio at the hospital who both takes my insurance and will take me on as a Medicare patient. Again, not a given on either score. Then there is the trust factor as I've had a few crappy doctors in other fields. If the electrician is not accepting my insurance, then 404Care, in my case, will be successful as, without doctors, I'll be dead. No two ways about it. The cardio I lost today is in the neighborhood and very convenient. They also do my blood work there, also very convenient; not many private diagnostic places do blood work. The electrician is at the hospital, not seriously inconvenient but not around the corner, either. If I have to go to the hospital to see a doctor and to get my monthly Coumadin checks and blood work, it will be a half a day or more, with travel and the additional cost, rather than around an hour by feet. I simply can't travel hours by mass transit to see a doctor; it's exhausting. My cardio is pissed as he had no idea; he's relatively young and is getting to the point of packing it in. I've been with him for 9 years, since I first got sick. At the time, it was a private practice that eventually Mt Sinai bought. He knows me well, knows my history well. The plumber is the doctor who issues my scripts and monitors my overall condition; the electrician monitors my device (the ICD). (The plumber told me he'd make sure he reset all my scripts to six months to give me time to find a new doc.) Honestly, I'm devastated. I trust this doctor, and that is not something to be taken lightly. Now all that is, at this moment, down the shitter. While I was having my insurance 'discussion' with the staff today, I said rather firmly for many within earshot to hear, 'Anyone who voted for Obama should be shot! Put up against a wall and a bullet put into what passes for their brains!' Got quite a few 'startled' looks. But fuck it. I agreed with a friend when I told her about it when she said she hopes the people who foisted 404Care on us should die of the most painful and deadly rectal disease out there. I added they should also get the most painful and deadly oral disease, too. That way they can't shit or eat. Hopefully, they'd explode. No great loss. But 9 years of trust gone without batting an eye. Nothing like Mt Sinai taking the Hypocritic Oath seriously. This nightmare is coming to everyone, in my case now rather than later. It's long past time for 'rope, tree, some assembly required'. And not in 'example' numbers, either, but rather a political genocide. Posted by: RickZ at February 11, 2016 04:14 AM (Ix+HS) 771
I just finished watching Groundhog Day again. I love that movie, but I wonder what it would be like to be in a Phil Connors situation. Assuming I had the resources, I'd desperately book a flight to Calgary, Rush through customs, hire a taxi, drive 90 minutes to Canmore and show up at the doorstep of a woman who would immediately call the police on me.
And I'd do it over and over again into eternity. Sometimes real life works out better. I won't learn a foreign language or the piano, but I wouldn't trade real life for the imaginary world. That sucks Rick. Late last year I got a notice from Blue Cross that my policy was changing so no one local was available, and costs would be higher if I used them (preferred provider thing I think). I just routinely pay my $500/mo, but had to change plans.
Even with no local guys on their list, it was still going up again, to like $560. But the switch got it back down to about $500 and I now have some local guys available. I never plan to use it since deductible is like $6800 max, but they seem to keep making adjustments to either comply with Obamacare or to save themselves money, I'm not sure. They did have some sort of dental at $22/mo, so in a year I can get some work, didn't even read all the details. Anyway, Obamacare is still being rolled out, and it rolls over people on the way apparently. I'm not quite to Medicare, but maybe the insurance will go down some then, since it's only for the 20% copay. My plan is to stay healthy until I die in my sleep at 100, but a very active friend passed out recently, and only his girlfriend finding him saved him ... so healthy guy is on that long recovery road now, heart, golf ball kidney stone, other stuff, new set of life rules. Last thing you want then is a fight over insurance. Good luck, be strong. Posted by: Illiniwek at February 11, 2016 06:18 AM (5Gpe2) 788

Illiniwek, I'm on SSDI. Yes, my plan is relatively cheap compared to your premiums. But with that shrinking pool of available doctors and hospitals, that isn't saying much. What I'm guessing is happening is people like me are only allowed one hospital, as opposed to going to the hospital which does best what one needs done. 404Care is a shoehorned, one size fits all, health insurance scam (just as the naysayers predicted back in 2009), with the word 'fits' being what They the Government tells you fits, not what you need. Like I need birth control.
That, and the very real and simple fact that many doctors and hospitals are no longer accepting new Medicare patients, only adds to the problem. As you state, what good is health insurance if you can't use it, much less afford using it? Also, as you correctly stated, 404Care is still being rolled out, so the shit still hasn't fully hit the medical insurance costs and doctor availability fan yet. I can tell you I didn't plan on having a silent heart attack, which went undiagnosed for about 6 months. No one ever does plan for such a life-changing event. At this point, I'm not sure what will trigger a mass uprising of the citizenry against our political mandarins. All I know is that our Forefathers would be reloading by now, with calls to bring up more powder and shot. Posted by: RickZ at February 11, 2016 06:37 AM (Ix+HS) 792

At this point, I'm not sure what will trigger a mass uprising of the citizenry against our political mandarins. All I know is that our Forefathers would be reloading by now, with calls to bring up more powder and shot. . . . . .Here in Kentucky Bevin has filed the paperwork with DHS to cancel both the State Medicaid expansion and the Kynect obamacare program and let me tell you that is not sitting well with the Liberals in Louisville and Lexington. They keep trotting out statistics on how we have less uninsured people than the five surrounding States do and it is glorious and unprecedented. They keep counting people who get Medicaid as "insured", when they really are not. What they fail to report on is the fact that over 80% of the residents in Eastern Kentucky are now on Medicare or Medicaid. Those numbers are simply astounding and completely unsustainable. Hospitals in rural Kentucky are closing because most of their patients are on Federal government sponsored insurance and their reimbursement rates suck and are so low they can't afford to keep the doors open. Doctors are refusing to take any new patients on either of the two plans so the newly insured people literally have no where to go. But by golly they have insurance! at least according to the newspapers. Posted by: The Great White Scotsman at February 11, 2016 07:10 AM (iONHu) 800
