Triumph The Insult Comic Dog Visits A College

18 The Partridge Family bus crosses New Hampshire, Bernie making impossible promises while he racks up primary votes.
"Free pizza!"
"Free beer!"
"Free laxatives!"
He chortles as he drives, exclaiming "I got this in the bag!"

The cloud of sunflower oil smoke the bus spews parts as a black van closes in, loud triumphant music playing.
*dun-de-dun, dun-dun-dun*
A college student asks "What is that?" as the van comes alongside. "I feel a stirring in my evil boy parts."

Bernie slams his foot down on the accelerator. "It's them!"
College student: "Who?"
Bernie: "The Vee-Jay Team! A crack group of mercenary Feminist Soldiers-of-Fortune!"
College student: "So the stirrings are...?"
Bernie: "Fear! Ball-breaking, sweaty terror!"
The student looks in his pants and says "Run away guys! Run...oh yeah. My girlfriend already has them in her room.

Ignoring the student Bernie calls out "Prepare for a tough fight! Reuben, better put on your cup if you want to live to see Wednesday!"

These are the people that believe that socialism will work, it just hasn't been tried hard enough yet.

I am coming to the conclusion that there are two major philosophies in the world. One that advances property rights and the one that denies them. Socialism/Fascism/Communism/Anarchism all come from the idea that property is misallocated and must be controlled by the state and shared out equally - the only argument is who and how it is done.
What opposes this is the idea that everything belongs to someone and it gets better if you leave them to it.

The various anti-property rights -isms get better press because everyone that subscribes expects to get more than what they put in without having to work for it.

Society as a ponzi scheme. Where no-one is allowed to sit out.

This is why my coffee sits acid on my stomach.

The mayor of Hawaii's Big Island declared a state of emergency on Monday
to deal with a growing outbreak of dengue fever, spread by infected
mosquitoes, with 250 cases confirmed over the past four months....

There have been 250 confirmed cases of dengue fever on the island since
Oct. 29, making it the largest outbreak in the state since the 1940s,
according to the mayor's declaration and Hawaii health officials.

Up until then, to be educated meant that you studied Hebrew, Greek and Latin, and read extensively from historical texts in the original language. With Great Books, it was all in English. Ironically, Great Books is now looked backed to as a sort of golden age of humanities education. There are no "great" books now.

The lowest cost for a round trip flight from Washington Dulles to the Big Island is around 800 bucks-using travelocity for full disclosure. 140 Bob Elliott, of Bob and Ray, died last week, and he always makes me think of Edwin Newman. Newman was the first "real" journalist to do live man-in-the-street political interviews, like Bob and Ray did as a joke. He had to wear a damn heavy backpack all over the convention floors to do it.

In 1976, My dad and I watched in horror as he did live exit interviews at voting polls in IIRC Minnesota. He got a lot of these collegian types, who said they'd just voted for Carter because "we need a change." What sort of change do you mean, Newman would ask. "I dunno, just a change." Any particular policies of Mr Carter you endorse? "No, I don't know any. Just a change." Newman, and dad and I, were dumbfounded. Not a thought in their pretty little heads.

I'm sure Edwin Newman was some kind of leftie, but he was among the last of the WWII generation of reporters, and wrote extensively on correct language. He had genuine gravitas, even when he made the joke, which was often. To see this wise and wizened veteran of what had been serious politics stand there, mouth agape at the abject stupidity of people, well, about my age, was a revelation to me, and has sadly borne out through the decades.

152 I think I'm going to make this comment on the Facebook (there's a few on there who support the socialist):

You know how stupid you have to be to be a socialist?

This stupid: On one hand, you think this quasi-capitalist system (regardless of the degree) is so aligned against you and is just chock full of shadowy and nefarious forces conspiring to deny you what you think you are worth. On the other hand, you think a new system--socialism--will dissipate those forces as easily as the morning fog and the greater empowered government will then reward you all of what you're worth; all for the mere cost of your vote.

What makes you think the forces aggressive enough to manipulate the current system (as per your conspiracy theory) won't be able to manipulate your socialist system? Promises of politicians? The self-same cheats who've been promising they'll fight for you for the last 100+ years?

And what of you? You have failed to prove to the world what you think you are worth in the current system (or you wouldn't support socialism). How the hell could you possibly believe you'll be any more valuable in ANY other system? Oh, right--the politicians promised you.

And that's what makes you stupid as hell for supporting socialism. You sit there wallowing in the myth that "if only the government would give to me, then I'll be great."

The guy spending his life savings on Powerball tickets has a better grasp on reality.

The problem with the Greek and Roman curriculum is that it was modeled after what was offered at Oxford and Cambridge, and the purpose of those colleges was to educate young aristocrats, not to prepare them for practical careers. Indeed, they looked down on businessmen and scientists - which is one reason Britain was eclipsed economically by the US and Germany in the late 19th century after getting a jump on everybody else by being the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.

Not that the Great Books were any more practical, really, although they certainly provided students with an in depth understanding of the greatness that was Western Civ. But college was still for the privileged classes up until the end of WWII and the passing of the GI bill.

I've read testimonials by profs at the time praising the maturity and seriousness of the vets who went to school on the GI bill. But once the university became more democratic, the dumbing down process became inevitable I guess.

No, no, a thousand times no. Certain colleges, certainly -- and certain colleges still are.

The "GI Bill" was used as cover for the biggest federal education caper ever undertaken. Do not be fooled. GI's certainly were entitled to something. What they got was indoctrination. I'd say "indoctrination pure and simple" but it was neither.

Make no mistake. The leftist takeover of all higher education was enabled by policies and curricula that flew under the cover of the GI Bill. Greatest generation and all that: thousands got good educations, thousands did well by it. But there was a solid undercurrent of subterfuge, and we ignored it, pretty much, to our peril.
