Posted by: Seamus Muldoon at February 08, 2016 08:26 AM (NeFrd) I think you're reading too much into it. Frankly, I prefer the sermonizing to actual criminalization. *Legally* I don't think drinking and driving (in and of itself) should be a crime; I don't care what your BAC is. We already have plenty of laws on the books regarding destruction of property, causing harm to others, etc. OTOH, I think socially shaming those who do so is generally a good idea. The ostensible Ms. of the lesbian couple (his friends - they're really cool otherwise) went stompyfoot, left the room, came back in and announced that "anyone who wants to outlaw my marriage" could "leave my parent's house" right now. Wasn't here for the ONT, but, both Madeliene Albright and Gloria Steinem can bite me. Hillary has never once in her whole life done anything for women but terrorize them. If they still want to lionize her over "Standing By Her Man", then fack their old glory holes to the moon and back. Feminism has too many low points to mention on this blog, but, forming up in complete unwavering solidarity to support BJ Clinton then and now despite his known battery and rape of women is truly their second lowest point, with their first point being their absolute devotion to the unfettered, at times lethally incompetent and unsanitary practice of infanticide by tortuous dismemberment combined with the abhorrent illegal sale of those little baby bits to keep the abortion leadership wealthy and powerful. Of all the things that women needed for equality, they honed in on this most damaging and disgusting practice and made it their holiest of holies. They neatly ignore that half or more of the julienned babies are female and therefore their constituents. Feminism in its latest incarnation is even crazier and less relevant and they wonder why young women are not joining them in droves.

So, Gaga sang the national anthem quite well in most people's opinions. And singing it even passably invokes comparisons to Whitney Houston, who sang it in 1991.
My first thought was that there must be something wrong with a song that is so difficult to sing that it can only be done well every 25 years. But no! We're Americans, damnit. Let those flouncy Euros have their ditties, let Russian have its marching to war shouts, let Canada have that thing that happens before hockey games. After watching it, I looked up the names of Klimt's models to see what happened to them. By the time the nazis took power, they were old women with families. They were all sent to transport camps and then death camps. The nazis kept such great records. Few survived. And the ones that did, were shot by the commies when they came to power. For years, I've ranted that feminists aren't serious about "equality" in the military until they advocate for universal female registration for the draft. You'll note that it's the MILITARY that put forth the proposal. The feminist usual suspects are suspiciously silent on the matter. And of course, that's because they want the benefits of membership in the combat arms branches, but they aren't willing to assume the associated sacrifices and responsibilities. Yeah. Fvck them. Posted by: rickb223 at February 08, 2016 09:46 AM (Z1oBf) Actually, there was a HUGE feminist push to get women into the trades in the 1980s. They saw all those high paying UNION jobs and wanted women in those slots. It's part of the genesis of where the SBA set asides for women/minority owned businesses. It was largely unsuccessful because a great deal of it is hot dirty work requiring great physical strength and stamina. Women did make inroads into finish carpentry and painting. It did cause a lot of men to put their businesses in their wive's names so they could bid on set aside projects. Milady Webworker came out of a Chicago Democrat family and environment in the 1960s. The kind of folk who, these days, just know that Hillary is the right candidate. She said she started studying feminism in college, and the more she read, the less sense the feminists made. Self-deprogrammed. Always amusing to me to hear her, nowadays, exclaiming about the latest stupid feminist thing, knowing what her sisters might think if they heard her. Like the first time I heard her describe herself as "conservative." Whoa! 'Way back when, I, too, thought the modern feminist movemen was important. Seeking equal treatment in the workplace, getting rid of barriers to opportunity, all seemed like an extension of the old enfranchisement battle. I viewed it as just one more facet for human rights. It wasn't the superficial issues, like the language nazis, - the power-women I respected were, like, the head of some corporation who said she didn't give a flip about being called "chairman" instead of "chairwoman" because she knew she was the boss! Confidence, not victimhood. I believe that kind of "feminism" is still important, but "feminism" as a brand is spoiled, and, as with race relations, much of the battle against prejudice has long since been won, in America at least, and what's left is screaming harpies making up new insane causes, like the rabid environmentalists crying about global warming long after the water's clean. (Don't know if I'm saying this well. Fortunately, I'm done.) Posted by: mindful webworker - human at February 08, 2016 09:55 AM (BN/jk) 305
I'm not a Cam Newton fan, but I was defending him about that loose ball thing. My impression was that he didn't dive into the pile because he was trying to stay mobile and get a good look at where the ball was. But then I saw the GIF replay of it and I gotta admit that his initial move *away* from the ball and forming pile of players does look bad. However, I'm still kind of reserving judgment on it because sometimes a short clip like that from a certain camera angle can be misleading.
Given all the BLM and Millenial PCness of yesterday's game, it's probably for the best that Newton didn't win. I knew he was not a very gracious winner, but I didn't realize what a sore loser he was. Maybe this loss will help him develop some character. He's really improved his game on the field (yesterday's performance notwithstanding), but he has a lot of growing up to do. Women in logistical positions freeing up men for combat is prudent. The women would see some combat just because modern warfare is fluid, but not as much as men in the combat arms. Women in combat arms and in close quarters like subs...no. There's nothing prudent about it. It's politics before military efficiency. Israel has a 'man' power problem which requires women to be part of the combat readiness troops.

There's a guy on HurryUpHarry who immigrated from the UK to Israel. He is a big lefty twat. But when called to arms, he is with his buddies in the thick of it. No more lefty b.s. It's kill or be killed. His loyalty is entirely with Israel. It seems that Israel has too many fifth columnists. Posted by: Bruce With a Wang! at February 08, 2016 10:06 AM (iQIUe) 334
#304 My parents were lifelong salt of the Earth Depression Era FDR WWII Democrats. I watched feminism and saw it ignore the real needs of women for something women did not really need. By the time, abortion was legalized, no woman's life was ruined by an untimely infant. There was almost no stigma attached to it by then. You put it up for adoption and everybody got on with their lives. The things that women really needed, they ignored:
1. Rape and sexual assault help. At the time of Roe v Wade, women were still put on trial by the defense if they dared try to prosecute a rape. Women were essentially given the same advice as the gals in Cologne are now getting--if you get raped, it must've been because you were in the wrong place, wrong time, and wearing the wrong clothes. 2. Help with deadbeat Dads for child support. Unfortunately, this has swung too much the other way and now some Dads need protection from their exes. 3. Help with domestic violence. This is still a huge issue. 4. Equal pay for equal work. This gradually equalized, but, at the time of Roe v Wade, it impacted far more women than the need for an abortion. I don't think anyone else has said it yet, so I'll put down the marker:
The 2016 Olympics will not take place. But in addition, I note that CDC and others have blamed not just Zika but a couple of other fast-moving diseases on all the people who travel internationally for sporting events. I'd never have guessed that such a large proportion of world travel was athletes and fans, jetting about. There's a challenge in this claim, and there has to be an element of Revenge of The Nerds. Would a government agency be so bold as to insinuate that Semester Abroad travel, or "Hiking in Europe" or "Mission Trips to The Third World" were the cause of an epidemic? With ebola, they stuck their neck out to quash the notion. Yes, I kind of, sort of, think that the role of "Sport" in the current world is inflated. I have bad memories of school, big deal. But people like what they like, and it's spooky action to bevel the statistics like that. Anti-Sport "movement." Posted by: Stringer Davis at February 08, 2016 10:06 AM (xq1UY) 336

Israel also teaches their women to fight because they remember all those defenseless Jewish women and their children being sent to their deaths in the camps. You try to drag any Israeli to a camp and it's not going to go well for you. You might eventually get them there, but, it will be over piles and piles and piles of your own dead.

>>I note that CDC and others have blamed not just Zika but a couple of
other fast-moving diseases on all the people who travel internationally for sporting events. Yeah, open borders has *nothing* to do with it, and that they weren't checking blood donations for it (because it was just discovered to be transmitted by blood, saliva). You can't open your southern border, and intentionally advertise in cetral and south America countries that you will accept unaccompanied minors, and not expect there to be some bugs brought in with them -- TB, whooping cough, mumps, EV-68, and now potentially Zika -- especially when you then force public schools to admit them without vaccination records (because: none). It's like our leaders are intentionally un-learning what our ancestors knew. Posted by: Lizzy at February 08, 2016 10:14 AM (NOIQH) 345
Once you accept the absence of DDT, the absence of quarantine powers, and the lack of inoculation requirements, you have to accept other things. Restrictions on "unnecessary" travel for the peons, for one. Stay home, flyover peasants. It's a dangerous world out there.
The Mediterranean was closed for generations following the great plagues. Trade and diplomacy collapsed. And every time trade routes re-opened, new plagues sprang up. Well into the 20th century, Oman and some other points were "quarantine ports," where all ships had to lay at anchor for a prescribed period to show that no one on board was carrying the disease du jour. I can think of a couple of times I might have re-instituted that (and a time or two when the airport looked like someone had...) The future may not be what we expected. "Modern medicine"...isn't. When I think of the CDC being in charge of all this, I sleep better at night. At home, with my passport in the safe. And I go out once a week.
