Btry came up today. Landed about 1230. They spent the night in staging area near Anzio. Wind came up and rain poured. Brigade SOP.
Don't know which was more irksome, the incoming artillery or the rain.

As I said, you can only vote in one. But it is odd that they are holding them on different days. The last time I voted in a primary here the poll workers asked me which ballot I wanted, Dem or Rep before I went into the booth with the machine. So they were holding both on the same day.

State hunting laws apply. Here and in GA if you take out the plug don't get caught hunting anything. But it is not illegal per se to take the plug out. A lot of people do take the plug out for home defense.

I can support that. Lady Gaga sounded like she had done a run-through and had gotten a nice performance within her capacity. It sounded great, and dare I say it, rehearsed. But yes, Whitney is still the gold standard. The Armed Forces chorus sounded great, and the song had a wonderful arrangement.

We used to have a jai alai facility here in Newport. We'd go every now and then on rainy days, it was a great way to spend an afternoon drinking beer and wagering on what was reputed to be the most corrupt sport in America.
We would just bet uniform colors since we had no idea what was going on anyway. The game never really caught on so they turned the facility into a slots gaming facility cause it appears there is no end to the number of people who will sit in front on some noisy machine and pour in quarters.

First job, I got into a discussion with the ladies in the secretary area and stated that most women were happier with their kids at home than working. Oh, the uproar was fantastic. Went by later in the day and one of the ladies stopped me to say that she thought it was good I stood up for my opinions.

I've driven past it a few times and it is pretty nasty. I'm sure they will try to pretty it up some but some of the stadiums they build for the World Cup are already decaying. They aren't real big on maintenance in Brazil.
Truth is lots of Rio is pretty beat once you get off the main strip. Wandering around at night is a pretty dicey proposition particularly if you are a woman.

For years, I've ranted that feminists aren't serious about "equality" in the military until they advocate for universal female registration for the draft. You'll note that it's the MILITARY that put forth the proposal.
The feminist usual suspects are suspiciously silent on the matter. And of course, that's because they want the benefits of membership in the combat arms branches, but they aren't willing to assume the associated sacrifices and responsibilities.

Actually, there was a HUGE feminist push to get women into the trades in the 1980s. They saw all those high paying UNION jobs and wanted women in those slots. It's part of the genesis of where the SBA set asides for women/minority owned businesses. It was largely unsuccessful because a great deal of it is hot dirty work requiring great physical strength and stamina. Women did make inroads into finish carpentry and painting. It did cause a lot of men to put their businesses in their wive's names so they could bid on set aside projects.

Given all the BLM and Millenial PCness of yesterday's game, it's probably for the best that Newton didn't win. I knew he was not a very gracious winner, but I didn't realize what a sore loser he was. Maybe this loss will help him develop some character.
He's really improved his game on the field (yesterday's performance notwithstanding), but he has a lot of growing up to do.

Israel uses women in the military for logistical reasons. And yes, they go on combat patrols, but carefully controlled ones.
I doubt very much whether in a real war Israeli women will see combat.
There is nothing wrong with women driving trucks and cooking meals and working in staff positions. Hell, most men in any military never see combat. And there is nothing wrong with that!

I doubt very much whether in a real war Israeli women will see combat.
There is nothing wrong with women driving trucks and cooking meals and working in staff positions. Hell, most men in any military never see combat. And there is nothing wrong with that!

1. Rape and sexual assault help. At the time of Roe v Wade, women were still put on trial by the defense if they dared try to prosecute a rape. Women were essentially given the same advice as the gals in Cologne are now getting--if you get raped, it must've been because you were in the wrong place, wrong time, and wearing the wrong clothes.
2. Help with deadbeat Dads for child support. Unfortunately, this has swung too much the other way and now some Dads need protection from their exes.
3. Help with domestic violence. This is still a huge issue.
4. Equal pay for equal work. This gradually equalized, but, at the time of Roe v Wade, it impacted far more women than the need for an abortion.

But in addition, I note that CDC and others have blamed not just Zika but a couple of other fast-moving diseases on all the people who travel internationally for sporting events. I'd never have guessed that such a large proportion of world travel was athletes and fans, jetting about. There's a challenge in this claim, and there has to be an element of Revenge of The Nerds.
Would a government agency be so bold as to insinuate that Semester Abroad travel, or "Hiking in Europe" or "Mission Trips to The Third World" were the cause of an epidemic? With ebola, they stuck their neck out to quash the notion.
Yes, I kind of, sort of, think that the role of "Sport" in the current world is inflated. I have bad memories of school, big deal. But people like what they like, and it's spooky action to bevel the statistics like that. Anti-Sport "movement."

Yeah, open borders has *nothing* to do with it, and that they weren't checking blood donations for it (because it was just discovered to be transmitted by blood, saliva).
You can't open your southern border, and intentionally advertise in cetral and south America countries that you will accept unaccompanied minors, and not expect there to be some bugs brought in with them -- TB, whooping cough, mumps, EV-68, and now potentially Zika -- especially when you then force public schools to admit them without vaccination records (because: none). It's like our leaders are intentionally un-learning what our ancestors knew.

The Mediterranean was closed for generations following the great plagues. Trade and diplomacy collapsed. And every time trade routes re-opened, new plagues sprang up. Well into the 20th century, Oman and some other points were "quarantine ports," where all ships had to lay at anchor for a prescribed period to show that no one on board was carrying the disease du jour. I can think of a couple of times I might have re-instituted that (and a time or two when the airport looked like someone had...)
The future may not be what we expected. "Modern medicine"...isn't.
When I think of the CDC being in charge of all this, I sleep better at night. At home, with my passport in the safe. And I go out once a week.
