The Morning After Open Thread

Well, well, well. It looks like I won't have to completely walk back my prediction from yesterday. Cruz came in a commanding first place and Rubio narrowly lost to Trump by a little over 2,000 votes. However, in the delegate count, Rubio and Trump both received 7.

An impressive victory by Cruz and a solid victory by Rubio over the rest of the Not Cruz/Trump contingent. It looks like we'll probably be down to a three man race sooner than expected.

Oh and it looks like Hillary run but the Democratic delegates were decided by a coin flip or a potato sack race, who knows?

Loser.com says so, too.

As of Tuesday morning, that domain name directs to the Wikipedia page for the blabbering billionaire, who settled for second in the Iowa caucus after insisting for months he would win.

That puts Trump is a long line of Loser.com losers -- including Barack Obama and Kanye West.

So many losers, so little time.

A domain search shows Loser.com turned into a Trump proxy at 12:28 a.m. Tuesday -- just a couple hours after Ted Cruz trounced Trump in the caucus.

102 One of the things that I like about Trump is that he doesn't play the expectation management game. He spins a little ("back in September nobody thought I would be in the top 10 in Iowa") but fundamentally he wants to win. He tells you he wants to win, he tries to win, and when he doesn't he acknowledges the loss and tries to to better next time.

Rubio celebrating his third place showing felt a lot like all those times the Republican Congress cheered about winning the game of five dimensional chess by preserving an issue to run on in future elections. Winning actual policy battles doesn't seem to excite much of the establishment.

And Trump went full-retard for ethanol subsidies.

In fact he went so far as to say we should increase the government subsidies and use the EPA like a weapon to enforce it.

It obviously did not sway Iowa and it's going to raise a lot of questions about his convictions elsewhere.

In true moron fashion all post-mortem analysis at AoSHQ must be filtered through the Emotenabler Device. First the Emotenabler takes a reading on the emotional mood of the operator - whether the leading emotion is fear, disgust, hatred, horror, despair, or towering fury.*

After the operator's emotional reading is taken the Emotenabler then produces an analysis that based on the emotion. The resulting rationalization (if such a strong word can be used) will provide the operator with the proper filter to view everything through.

*Technically happiness, joy, fondness, love, and hope can also be read through the Emotenabler; however it has never occurred during actual use.

I remember some of the '70's feministas avoided both razors and deodorant, so yeah, cleanliness.

Even the most homely Dem woman can feel superior to DWS, because all you have to do to feel more attractive than Deb is wash your hair.

Really, I think it's part of the way the Ds pull the wool over the eyes of their stupid voters. They know leftism is based on envy, so they do their best not to inspire it. Hill can afford to wear different Tiffany jewelry and Yves St. Laurent every day - but that would draw attention to the fact that she's one of the 1% she's attacking, so instead she opts for outfits that look like she picked them out by putting on a blindfold and pulling them off the plus size rack at Goodwill.

I think a bit of vanity is not a bad thing to have. With women like Hill and DWS, their lust for power is far stronger than vanity, so they don't give a shit what they look like.

150 Dick Morris had given Cruz 7 points for his ground game, so with Trump polling +4, that worked out about right. Cruz won the evangelical vote, and Republican farmers were more concerned about getting a conservative than ethanol support. And trade and borders and refugees are made huge national issues only by Trump, so who is still the alpha dog? Not Cruz, for "standing" against ethanol mandates, as every "conservative" outlet had been demanding as the litmus test. Cruz is still the H-1B guy, and can he get Congress to do anything he demands?

(good interview with the "angry farmer", which looked like a set up, but still good. at the start the farmer argues, Ted calms him, then the farmer waits, Ted waits ... for like two seconds. Then the farmer takes the cue and argues again and Ted calms him again showing his "authoritative grace", lol. They messed up their lines. The farmer seemed to be for Cruz already)

Removing the alleged aura from Trump is good for the Donald, if he is to become a serious candidate, not just anger management. He now needs NH, and it may come down to SC. Trump/Cruz got over 50%, but FOX's little boy Rubio was grinning like he did with Schumer and the Gang of Eight, so that's not good.

Trump had the best after party speech, hard to even watch open borders FOX pushing Rubio now, except Laura Ingraham is good. Cruz got his Iowa momentum and now has to preach it to the other states, but FOX thinks Rubio is the belle of the ball.

1. Winning Iowa hasn't meant much to the eventual republican nominee in recent history. It ain't over.

interesting quote

What went wrong for Trump? Iowa state senator Brad Zaun, the only elected official in the state who endorsed Trump, wasn't entirely sure. "It was frustrating that we couldn't do the full Grassley," Zaun said, referring to the Iowa GOP senator's practice of visiting all 99 counties. "We couldn't find venues big enough in these smaller communities to hold these events."

and

What most analysts and pollsters got wrong is that they believed a big turnout would mean an electorate with a smaller percentage of evangelical Christians.

followed by

And that pretty much explains Cruz's victory. He won 34 percent of evangelicals, while Trump won 22 percent and Rubio won 21 percent. Among the 36 percent of caucusgoers who aren't evangelicals, Trump took 29 percent, Rubio took 26 percent, and Cruz took 18 percent.

What permanently impaired my trust in Rubio was his giving interviews in English to the alphabet networks, in which he stated an anti-amnesty position, and more or less simultaneously giving interviews in Spanish to Univision and Telemundo in which he stated a pro-amnesty position.

That trick originated with Yasser Arafat, who used to state mutually contradictory things in English and Arabic, and it has not become any less disreputable since the rumpled old terrorist first came up with it.

Posted by: artisanal 'ette at February 02, 2016 10:25 AM (qCMvj)

326 Well, with Iowa being essentially a three-way horse race between Trump, Cruz, and Rubio, perhaps Trump and Cruz need to think about cooperating in some way to create a united "not GOPe" front. Probably they should wait and see how the New Hampshire primary shakes out.

I can't see Trump playing second fiddle to Cruz as VP on a Cruz ticket, but possibly he could withdraw, and throw his support to Cruz in exchange for him being a part of the Cruz administration with the power to actualize some of his policies.

Better still, a Trump/Cruz ticket. Cruz could act to some extent as a Constitutional flywheel for Trump, and would be well placed after Trump does his one term and retires to enjoy his old age as a successful President.

Either way, some sort of not-Rubio coalition seems to be needed.

If we can't see her indicted, I want to see a public meltdown. I think it's possible given the pressure she's under paired with her ego and ginormous sense of entitlement. Saw it in 2008 that time she started crying and saying how just darn sad she was that voters might not have the opportunity to have her as president (message fail). In a world where building your own wealth from the ground up is frowned upon where it hasn't been stamped out by fiat and regulation, success for a regular person means getting big enough to sell out. Every niche market will have its players snapped up by big brands. I think of it as broadening the revenue base. Eventually a big company monopolizes its primary market space and has to branch out into more and more tangentially related fields in order to continue growing.

This is why the startup scene is so insidious to me.

Ace works fine in Brave (and is tons faster).

499 How coney dogs can make your blood pressure rise...

A friend who moved to Florida a few years ago bought his daughter and worthless son-in-law a Coney Island restaurant in Michigan to provide an income for them. Because he knew his daughter and sil, he installed a couple web cameras so that he could watch the activity from Florida.

His doctor ordered him to stop watching. His blood pressure was going off the charts.

Place is up for sale now.

500 449 That's because something is wrong. The Dems had almost as many people caucus as the GOP.

How could you know that? The Democrats don't release vote totals, and report only delegate votes. Bernie has been trying to get them to release raw vote totals (because he will have swamped Clinton in those numbers), but has so far not been successful.

News broadcasters last night on CNN and Fox were saying they thought the Dems were somewhere around 125,000 but that was pure speculation.

501 I don't think Cruz can win the nom or the general without the Trump votersPosted by: ThunderB at February 02, 2016 10:58 AM (zOTsN)

Strangely enough, Cruz won Iowa without Trump voters because Trump voters, er, voted for Trump. That's how primaries work.

Do you have a link for that? I was under the impression that Cruz spend more than anyone in Iowa.

He won because he got a little over a quarter of the vote, if that - Looks like Microshaft screwed the count.

Trump would need to obligingly drop out so his supporters could go elsewhere. Don't see that happening, ever.

Not fair to Tammy Faye. She at least meant well.

Back in the day, when I was stationed at Langley, I had a smeared-face T-shirt with the caption "I ran into Tammy Faye at the mall".

It was the air-conditioned dog house that got to me.

Good times. Good times.

IIRC, she died of cancer. Poor thing. In the "de mortuis..." sweepstakes, I denounce myself.

510 If I was a campaign manager, my assessment would be that a non-politician, with no ground operation, turned out 45K voters and stole 7 delegates, all while spending nothing. That is scary. It defies political logic. Everything else fell into place as predicted with Cruz winning and Rubio taking a slice. Jeb is getting his head flushed in the toilet by Barbara. The biggest winners are non establishment candidates which totally dominated. Rubio will only win the nod if the system is completely rigged in his favor come convention time.

Cruz people reported that CNN reported that Carson's was (in effect) dropping out. IDK where CNN got their information. So is he suspending or is he not?

I love college students supporting Bernie because he'll provide free college educations.

They're apparently too stupid to figure out that that means free college educations for people who come after them, since they'll mostly be out of college before any of that could happen.

They're also too stupid to figure out that the people who will be paying for those "free" college educations will be people who will have graduated from/dropped out of college, and are now working. I.e., them.

I liked that song when it came out as well as her other hit song, Look What They've Done to my Song. I was 11 or 12 at the time.

Melanie is mostly forgotten, but her songs were infinitely better than the polished noise that become hits today.

Oh, and I credit Joan Baez with popularizing Bob Dylan to the masses. Some may hate her for this, but musical taste is subjective, so I won't argue.
