Add onto that underperforming Trump theory:
Polls are done with calls to landlines. Trump's support tends to be older people. Older people have more land lines than younger people. Ergo: polls could be oversampling Trump support. Same could be said for Clinton's support in relation to Sanders. Posted by: David at February 01, 2016 09:05 AM (zK5dm) 4

I just find it hard to believe a base as energized as Trump's is underpolls. There is Howard Dean for precedent. But my understanding is he was fading in Iowa in the 2004 polls right before the caucus, whereas Trump isn't.

Is this really accurate? Anecdotally speaking, I don't know anyone or anyone's parents who still has a land line. Hell, even my ancient Dad has been using a cell for about 10 years. It would seem to be foolish to rely on land lines to do polling. I find it hard to believe that polling companies would rely on land lines for their polling. Posted by: sombrastewart at February 01, 2016 09:07 AM (k28vq) =========== You can still do that with random digit dialing. It just takes a lot more calls to get a decent sized sample. If you start with a list, you'll hopefully get a certain percentage of those people to pick up the phone, but you'll only need say 500 to pick up the phone to get a decent sample size. With the random dialing, you have to increase that by a lot because you have to get people to not only pick up the phone but also be likely caucus goers. So, say half pick up the phone, but only a quarter of them are likely voters, then you'll have to call eight times as many numbers. Still possible, just more time consuming. And the weather report: Iowa caucusgoers should be fine, but Mother Nature just might hold presidential candidates and swarms of national media captive. A blizzard is expected, but not until after Iowas politicking is completed. Through about 9 p.m. (Monday) it doesnt look bad or much snow in any location, said Roger Vachalek, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. I doubt there will be much of any accumulation by that time. Maybe less than half an inch or so in some areas. DM Posted by: Laurie David's Cervix at February 01, 2016 09:13 AM (kdS6q) 29

I have a landline for my security system. I also have a cell, but, I do not want to be one of those people who walks from room to room in a big house clutching a cell phone. I get cold calls on both phones. If I don't recognize the caller's number or it says Private Call or whatever, I answer the phone without saying anything, robocalls hang up and human callers have a script that says to wait politely for the phone's owner to speak.

This. If you want the DOPe to learn a lesson, nothing less than Cruz and Trump (in either order) in the 1 & 2 spots will do. And, I hate to say it, but Trump is better than Cruz. Not because he's more conservative, or presidential, or any such thing. No, because he's not a Republican. Well, not a Conservative, anyway. If someone who is so obviously a fair-weather Republican wins the nomination, it will signal the death of the Republican party. If someone who is so obviously a fair-weather Republican *nearly* wins the nomination, and then some establishment pick (Jeb, Rubio, Kasich) is picked at the convention, it will be a sign the Republican party has chosen to self-immolate. The field begins to narrow today.
No, see, the trouble with mandated ethanol is that the fields widen. Putting ethanol production on a war footing incentivizes planting fence-to-fence, and that wipes out the pheasant habitat. I reckon the deer must like it, though. Ringnecks were a Chinese import in the first place, and probably weren't going to flourish in the long run. Wish the same were true of their damn carp. Good Old Carp, of course, were a German import. So that's different. Apparently in a Schubertian alpine stream, carp's a fighting game fish. But they can live on corn, and will walk the fields to get it. Posted by: Stringer Davis at February 01, 2016 09:19 AM (xq1UY) 48

I would like to know if there's such a thing as an Evangelical block, because in this election I don't think there is. If being evangelical means you're against gay marriage and against abortion (which I think it a really narrow definition) there are RCs or other Christians who fall into that category and they don't consider themselves Evangelical. There may be "Evangelicals for Trump" but there are obviously Evangelicals who are supporting Cruz or Huckabee or Rubio, and anyone who thought Trump was going to take a stand against either gay marriage or abortion is wrong, although he might support people not being fined for refusing to do cakes for gay weddings

I have copper telephone wires, so what I say goes.
On rare occasion, I have a telephonic communication that is important. Cell-tower service is as flirty as a first-time cross-dresser at a floss dance. My house has both (Bethlehem Steel) I-beams and poured-full concrete block in its structure, and my floors have re-bar. And there is aluminized mylar film under the roof, and foil-faced foam board in the sheathing. To Sprint, this is a Faraday cage. Somehow or another, it doesn't interfere with short wave or FM at all. You have to roam aimlessly through the halls to maintain a signal. I don't know, if your connectivity is mainly for snarking with your friends and accumulating fictional candy, it's probably fine, especially if Mom and Dad get your cell bill. I don't even trust the sonsofbitches when I'm working in the garden. But then I'm old enough that I can spend one hour alone without texting a BFF. "Putting ethanol production on a war footing incentivizes planting fence-to-fence"
There were a few years of bubble in corn prices, but I think that related more to oil prices going to $120. Even when oil was $85 corn had come back down to $3.50, though inputs are still sky high. I bought the part of the old farm I used to hang out on as a kid, and what I could afford. 100 acres hills and woods, and 50 acres of crops in little patches around the edges. Caught a couple turkeys on the trail cam last week ... but it is bobcats and coons that hurt them most. Fence to fence does happen ... or they just take out all the fences. But that is part of the whole "productivity" thing, regardless of whether we have ethanol. Big machinery wants wide open spaces. I still have a lot of quail, seldom see a pheasant. Think about the statistical improbability of the Dims having two men with worse qualifications than Hillary, who both came from literally out of nowhere to beat her in a state where she has been campaigning since the early 90s and neither Obama or Sanders had been in the state before their Presidential runs. Given Obama's White Kansas roots, he might have been across the state line a time or two, but, I doubt that Bernie could've found Iowas on a map before now.

Actually... more or less this. I'm not technically part of the Evangelical movement (at least, I've never heard that the churches of Christ qualify as that), but I think Christians across a broad spectrum are starting to realize that they've been whoring themselves out to Republicans, and many of them have decided to stop. BRITAIN is home to more than 3 million Muslims for the first time ever with more than half born outside the UK, according to new figures.
Soaring immigration and sky high birth rates have seen the number in the country double in a little over a decade. Some parts of London are now almost 50 per cent Islamic, according to analysis from the Office for National Statistics. If current trends continue the areas could become majority Muslim within ten years. One in four Muslims in England and Wales are under ten years old than in any other age group indicating a very high birth rate within the community. Followers of Islam now make up one in every 20 people within the country. Move the Nukes of of The UK NOW Posted by: Nevergiveup at February 01, 2016 09:57 AM (kzdjp) 196

Once the burning times begin we'll all fall back our subconscious programming and begin acting in ways we can't understand, but that in fact are the inevitable result of any population as carefully and consistently brainwashed as we the horde.
It will start with burning things down. First just some buildings, then most buildings, then, we'll begin to realize, all of them. We won't be able to stop ourselves. Once we're living in a sea of charred rubble, a second strange behavior will begin. Pieces of the rubble will begin turning up further and further afield. The wood and rebar...the stones...scattered. Finally you'll see the strangest behavior of all. We'll all be salting the ground those burned and scattered buildings occupied. And that's when we'll realize there's only one person selling salt in all the world in the aftermath of the burning times... AllenG. Starting to see some of the oppo research on Trump starting to drop. Article about British anchor (female of course) who did a piece on Trump. He wined and dined her, flew her around in his helicopter while lying about his success and then stalked her when she wrote a less than flattering article. His attacks on Megyn Kelly, no matter how well deserved, are going to be part of the meme that he is a misogynist. Cannot believe he is fooling people like Ann Coulter, Howie Carr into believing that he is other than a narcissistic megalomaniac who has no idea how to do what he says he is going to do.
Rumor also that NBC has a negative piece they are sitting on. Sigh.....I hope Cruz pulls this out and starts the Donald into single digit territory. You might be right. Rubio has a bit of momentum right now, but I'm not sure it's enough to overtake Cruz. Trump is the one who could really flame out if his followers don't show up. Of course, that's one of the big unknowns right now. We'll see. But Rubio has done a good job of managing expectations and he will do no worse than the third place finish that he set as his goal. Whereas Cruz and Trump will both be disappointed with anything other than an outright win.

Posted by: Kindltot at February 01, 2016 10:38 AM (q2o3 =========== Holman Hamilton's biography. From what I understand based on this biography and the Polk biography I read, Polk had a fear and dislike of Scott, giving command of the army to Taylor. After Taylor won the battle of Monterey, he gave the opposing general extremely generous terms of surrender (they all walk out, with their guns, and no fighting for 8 weeks) which pissed off Polk who in turn gave command back to Scott. The funny thing about it all is that Taylor wasn't that good of a general. His victory at Palo Alto was mostly due to his artillery and his victory at Monterey was considered at best messy by his fellow generals (he unnecessarily lost a lot of men going to the center of the town in some brash charges). I just got a cold call on the landline from the National Republican Senatorial Committee, about what, I don't know or care. I hung up. Apropos of nothing, GE just announced it's going to stop making those CFL curlyque bulbs and it's switching to LED bulbs. (Full disclosure: I like LED bulbs and think they're the superior of the two. They are pricey, though.)
Posted by: Brother Cavil, Restorationist at February 01, 2016 10:30 AM (9krrF) And right there we see laid bare the blatant payoff to GE and its ilk from Fred Upton and the other shills behind the incandescent bulb ban. LEDs were going to get to the top eventually, but the cronies needed a stash of "tide us over" cash in the meantime. I loathe those bastards. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at February 01, 2016 10:39 AM (BK3ZS) I can't believe the govt. isn't going to ride in and ban CFL bulbs, to force everyone to buy LED"s from GE. You know, the govt. finally has figured out that the CFL 's are toxic because they have mercury in them...... By the way, you can still buy incandescents through Newcandescent in NJ. http://www.newcandescent.com/frosted-incandescent-light-bulbs/ Posted by: Jen the original at February 01, 2016 11:05 AM (TKQrK) 494
This is what makes Cruz establishment. The little
establishment media wants to ride his pony back to Washington where he lives. I have heard every reason why Trump won't win and this might be my favorite: Nothing. I hope the anti-Trump establishment are all beating their voodoo drums real hard today Posted by: thethirdman at February 01, 2016 10:51 AM (6Q67I) Cruz is not establishment... the are a few legitimate criticisms to be made about Cruz. That he is a get along go along sell out is not one of them. Posted by: redbanzai at February 01, 2016 11:10 AM (NPofj) 495

Oh, God, I hope not. Specifically, I hope Rubio gets stomped like a narc at a biker rally. I loathe that man and don't trust his sudden"tough on immigration" lies. And yes, I'm sure Trump is lying, too. They're all liars, every last one of them. The only question is, which liar will do the least damage? Frankly, this whole godforsaken country is overdue for a Reign of Terror. Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at February 01, 2016 09:16 AM (X6fMO I agree about Rubio but I think the last 7 years have been reign of terrorish enough. Donald then Cruz. People want a wall and they want Muslims banished until they sort out their religion among themselves. Plus we can count on a ton of Dems going to the polls for Donald, just to screw with things.

Thinking Trump would do the least damage is the real crux of the issue. Rubio gets distracted by one issue. Trump is good on one issue. And we can't even be sure that issue was anymore than playing to the crowd. Trump is a total gamble. For decades it has annoyed me when celebrities voiced opinions on politics... shut up and entertain me! Now we are about to give one of the loudest the Whitehouse. I know for sure he does not care about the small things that matter for most of us in our everyday life. Trump's perspective is HUGE, that means the things I care about are only bargaining chips to him. Posted by: petunia at February 01, 2016 11:55 AM (VoCyE) 498
Why should Iowa decide anything beyond its own borders wrt conservative candidates? It's just a corn-subsidy ethanol mandate gatekeeper now, which is worthless to any principled conservative, who knows ethanol is pure boondoggle from top to bottom. How is Iowa valuable to choice of a nominee, except to refuse to nominate anyone Iowa chooses.
If the GOP can't get rid of ethanol mandates and subsidies, its worthless. Posted by: sarahw at February 01, 2016 11:58 AM (3fTXW) 499
If The Donald gets third we are about to experience the most unbelievable and crazy reality TV in American political history. Buckle up, it's about to go nuclear...

The Iowa govna has pointed out that a sizable number od Democrats and Independents have switched to the Republican party to vote for Ted Cruz.
*shuffles data pages* Ahhhh, no, not Ted Cruz. Posted by: Drider at February 01, 2016 12:19 PM (bdzyz) 503
I do kind of wish all the states would get their collective crap together and make a true Super Tuesday: all 50 states holding their primaries and caucuses at one time.
Okay, I just hate seeing Iowa get fawned over by people who forget about it for the other 4 years of the Presidential cycle. Also, who does Iowa think it is being first? It's only Iowa! It's not Missouri, long-standing target of Grandpa Simpson's ire. Nor is it Minnesota, land of 10,000 lakes and 1 Prince! Iowa's motto should be: "We're not even cool enough to be Kentucky." So yeah, Iowa, get off your high horse and stop trying to be first with your non-voting all-yelling selection process. Posted by: PaperworkNinja at February 01, 2016 12:33 PM (J991N) 504
Gilmore must stay. The people haven't gotten to hear him enough. Once they do: BAM! President Gilmore.
you mean "Happy Gilmore"? Bob Barker as VP?!?!? Posted by: Paladin at February 01, 2016 12:44 PM (WujO7) 505
put the letter "I" between brackets "[ ]" at the beginning of what you
want to italicize, then a forward slash and letter "I" between brackets to close the tag. Any deviation from this well get you the Barrel. Posted by: Paladin at February 01, 2016 12:50 PM (WujO7) 506

What in the world. First Cruz pulls this mail shaming nonsense and now he wants to work with Pelosi?
I thought that if we elected him he was going to beat Pelosi into the ground with the conservatism club, Rush is going to be upset about this. Posted by: Drider at February 01, 2016 01:31 PM (bdzyz) 513
Curmudgeon, why put up with it at all? Especially since it has long been universally acknowledged to be damaging to equipment, not energy saving, makes food more expensive and other feed stocks (like hay) more expensive. It's a total boondoggle, and ethanol biofuel would barely exist without mandates and subsidies. If anything, ethanol opposition is a good screen for a principled conservative. The unprincipled are likely to support any personally lucrative or power-gathering method, and bodes ill for border controls or immigration limits.

You are wrong. In this neck of woods, Trump supporters (like my mom) are in the 70's. Now tell me, have you ever seen a a millennial poll worker?
Well, not in Iowa you haven't because they don't exist! The old people are the most involved around here and they seem to support Trump to a person. I don't understand it. My prediction...Trump, then Cruz, then Rubio.
