Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Overnight Open Thread (1-31-2016)In the last ten thousand years - an instant in our long history - we've abandoned the nomadic life. We've domesticated the plants and animals. Why chase the food when you can make it come to you?For all its material advantages, the sedentary life has left us edgy, unfulfilled. Even after 400 generations in villages and cities, we haven't forgotten. The open road still softly calls, like a nearly forgotten song of childhood. We invest far-off places with a certain romance. This appeal, I suspect, has been meticulously crafted by natural selection as an essential element in our survival. Long summers, mild winters, rich harvests, plentiful game - none of them lasts forever. It is beyond our powers to predict the future. Catastrophic events have a way of sneaking up on us, of catching us unaware. Your own life, or your band's, or even your species' might be owed to a restless few-drawn, by a craving they can hardly articulate or understand, to undiscovered lands and new worlds. Based on the paths of other countries if these legitimate safety concerns are left unaddressed, you will eventually start seeing the appearance of death squads either with the tacit approval of local police or drawn from the police themselves. Note that this is all foreseeable. And avoidable. The Naked Truth: On Nude Statues and Civilization Renaissance thinkers blended Classical ideas with Christian thinking: man could be seen not as just a fallen creature in a vale of tears but as the foremost of God's creations, whose good in this life was important to the Almighty. Posted by: Your Decidedly Devious Uncle Palpatine, Still Accepting Harem Applicants at January 31, 2016 11:34 PM (/33sy) There are still plenty of women in China. Watched ep 1 of the new X-Files last night. It was great. Very nostalgic, as they delivered an episode in an early seasons fashion. Surprising, as it is a grand conspiracy story, which I lost interest in after the movie and later seasons convolutions. It was classic early years conspiracy arc stuff... intriguing. No doubt that they're part of some unsavory group but this is exactly what you get when political leaders abdicate their most basic responsibility: protecting the people they claim to represent.
*** There is another element here to note as well - this is collective punishment. Well the modern west rejects collective punishment and retaliation, there is little question that it works...which is why you see it in most (all?) pre-civilized countries for "policing" and even in most modern countries in war. Certainly, using Europe's anemic policing model, presuming they do (instead of what we saw in Rotterdam for example), will not have any notable effect on the Islamic invaders. I'm not endorsing collective punishment here - I think the clear, humane, answer is to send them home. But if Europe won't do that, then you will have escalating conflict between the invaders and the people of Europe until one side wins...and it will only get more and more violent until that point. 121: The most beautiful formulation of EM theory is the 4-vector and tensor form. It's absolutely beautiful and succinct. Unfortunately, they don't teach it except in higher physics, after special relativity is mastered.
There, the notion of E and B (H I prefer to say because of symmetry reasons too boring to go on) as separate vector fields. They become one tensor field, the Faraday Tensor, or just the EM field tensor. There, you appreciate that both fields are actually one thing, and what one calls electric and magnetic are just mostly a coordinate artifact. However, in the general case it is impossible to completely transform away one field. But, nonetheless they participate in a dance, and in the tensor and 4-vector formulation, that dance becomes one tensor field. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at January 31, 2016 11:58 PM (dvuhZ) One of the best bits of wisdom I've repeatedly handed out to STEM students -- if you're supposed to take Calculus 3A-B-C in the first year with Physics 10A-B-C....stagger it so you take the math first. Take Calc 3A and defer the physics; then take Calc 3B with Phys 10A; Calc 3C with Phys 10B; and take Phys 10C next year with differential equations. It will vastly improve your comfort level, your stress level, your understanding of the subject, and your GPA -- and, because of the way prereq's are structured, it won't slow you down by any appreciable amount. For example, take the calculus of variations. It was Hamilton's Principle of Least Action that just gave me one of those moments where the theme from 2001 plays in your head, and you've realized you've learned something very deep. That motivated me to learn variational calculus. See Feynman's famour derivation of Schrodinger's wave equation from variational principles, for instance. And Sagan was talking about 10,000 years which comes out to 4 years in your analogy, which is a very serious amount of someone's life. The fact is that either Sagan was confused or was trying to push something to make recorded history seem like an insignificant piece of human history. He also glossed over the power of exponential growth which accompanied those last 10,000 years, when the number of humans on Earth dwarfed those of the past. Clearly, humans love exploration and discovery but Sagan seems to have no clue why and his explanation was sort of stupid. When they saw all their Physics classmates stumped at trying to describe something when they already had the math for it, they'd realize that much of their physics coursework was dumbed-down and explained backwards in order to not outrun the math that the students were expected to know. If you already know the math, you can learn physics forwards -- simpler, and easier. Posted by: cthulhu at February 01, 2016 12:24 AM (EzgxV) 219

So, if you're an exporter in China and your goods are "FOB Shanghai dock", you [theoretically] still get paid when your goods are loaded even if the ship sinks while still moored to the dock. Or even if a forklift driver misses the crane to load your goods and pushes 'em off the edge of the dock. You successfully delivered them to the FOB point, and everything from there is NOT. YOUR. PROBLEM. Posted by: cthulhu at February 01, 2016 12:16 AM (EzgxV) **** Yeah, yeah, yeah, "Freight On Board." I used to run import-export..... 228 Some explore and colonize, but most stay home.
Posted by: eman at February 01, 2016 12:28 AM (MQEz6) So which is it? 1. The best, brightest, and most ambitious go out and colonize new regions, leaving the average folks back in the relative comfort of the old country/planet. 2. The normal people push the misfits out of their well-ordered society, forcing them to go out and colonize new countries/planets. I think it's a little of both. I also think that a frontier is necessary to keep ideas of individual liberty alive. A settled society tends towards conformity. It wouldn't be a problem past the first quarter.
Posted by: cthulhu at February 01, 2016 12:24 AM (EzgxV) True. I had to slap a presentation together about chemical equilibrium but couldn't assume people knew calculus, so I had to keep it simple. I compared two college into chemistry textbooks. One from 20 years ago, and another originally written in the '40's by Linus Pauling. The former did not use calculus and was at times hard to follow. Pauling's book did use calculus and was rather straight forward. This is why I try to pick up older text books whenever I visit used book stores. On every other site, and on all AoS posts except yours, imbedded YouTubes show up with a black square and a "something's wrong" message, but that has a link to YouTube which I can copy for downloading the video. (I prefer to download than live stream because my own reasons, ok?) On your embeds, though, I get an empty space. I have to turn on javascript and plug-ins, re-load the page, and then start playing the video before I can get the YouTube URL for copying. Then turn off settings again. I've looked at the source code and darned if I can figure out how it even works (some script) but yours are different than anybody else's. Maybe it's easier for you this way but it's just one more annoying technical hurdle and hassle for me. Just my problem, I suppose, and not yours and maybe nobody else's. But FTR. You could say that Clyde Tombaugh discovered the ninth planet in 1930, or you could say that he discovered the first of an entirely new class of objects, about 60 years before the next one was found. Today we know of hundreds at least, and we've only found the larger ones. There are probably millions of smaller ones. Whatever you want to call Pluto, it doesn't diminish Tombaugh's achievement in the slightest. My son's hockey team is all boys, finally. He is nine, and he doesn't have to have girls on board.
But, they have to play against 12 year old girls. Some of whom need the exercise in the worst way. Some of those girls outweigh my son by about double. They are fat and slow but they are bullies because they can bodyslam and get away with it. No crosschecking allowed at this level, but the girls just butt into them with their bulk. It's the greatest load of crap I've ever seen in sports. Teaches the girls to be fat and slow, and the boys to hate playing games. They do much better when they play their actual peers. When I was that age (get off my lawn!), girls played broomball. It was fast and mean and without pads. We weren't allowed to play hockey with all the pads and protections because we might get hurt. I never got that. I always came home bloody and bruised and loved every minute of it. Posted by: tcn in AK at February 01, 2016 01:12 AM (+YMhA) 277

There is a major accounting issue hidden underneath FOB terms. A lot of companies use terms of FOB shipping point to determine when a sale is made.....while the real world insists that the customer doesn't owe for the goods until they've been delivered.
So the point where they're stacked on the dock to the point where a customer signs for 'em is a grey area.....where both are likely to say "sue FedEx; sue UPS" -- even though the law clearly states that the FOB point controls. Posted by: cthulhu at February 01, 2016 01:25 AM (EzgxV) 286

No doubt that they're part of some unsavory group
I doubt it. There's nothing "unsavory" about defending yourself, your family, friends and countrymen when your own government has, as is noted, actively doubled down in acting against you. Sweden has entered the Burning Times, and we can't judge them by the same standards as societies that haven't. The migrants may technically be there "legally", but they are not there legitimately. They are all therefore fair game for the citizenry to repel, until they are gone one way or another. To see this more clearly, think about the government confiscation of houses to give to the migrants. This is done by elected officials and is "legal" in that sense, but does the homeowner have the moral right to use deadly force against the migrants in his own house, until it is free of them? Of course. Hopefully, before that point, they will "self deport". The really stunning thing is how adamant all these European governments are in their will to destroy their own people. Is Soros bribing them all? Are they all clones of Barack Obama? Posted by: angela urkel at February 01, 2016 03:52 AM (b2qGx) 317

We don't deal with it. We leave them behind when it hits the fan. They are going to be much too heavy to carry, and if they don't have some redeeming value that offsets the stupid by a vast margin, it's just not going to be worth it attempting to save them. Maybe we can work them until they drop or something.

What kind of dumbasses would invite a bunch of murdering savages into their country? Why, that would be Western Civilization, that's who. Committing cultural suicide. Off to work so syrian 'children' can have swimming rights. Free of charge!

317: To hell with them. The actions of the Gestapo and the SS was exagerrated propaganda too. You will never talk to these true believers. They will find out on their own. Kind of like playing with cobras. Misunderstood snakes is all.

Olla, had great fun last night goofing on some liberals last night; as we talked I substituted Mondale and Dukakis for Sanders.

He thinks all of the rape reports are just exaggerated, right-wing propaganda.
These people live in their own reality. How do we deal with this? Posted by: ster at February 01, 2016 04:09 AM (Y0FCw) -------------------------------- Good morning. I guess we turn it on them. "So you think the women are LYING? What's with your war on women? Why do you think female reporters are lying in addition to female victims? Do you think slave women were ever raped, or was that right-wing exaggeration? Because Democrats were the ones who supported slavery, you know. Is that what you're doing AGAIN?" What's odd is, there's plenty of video out there of these attacks. There's one youtube in particular -- I think it was shown around here -- that a woman took herself while she's trying to ward off three of these animals. Ask what if that was three white Republicans attacking a Black woman in a subway. Would it be newsworthy? Eh, not that that will do anything. I wonder what today's news will be. I'm staying home -- sick.

Don't bother reading Breitbart this morning. It's all bad. Trump v Cruz. European 'refugees' nightmare. Pam Gellar being politically incorrect but predictably correct.
All blood pressure raising stuff. The 'light at the end of the tunnel' appears to be a freight train. Posted by: ugg boots at February 01, 2016 06:34 AM (fbovC) 336
Europe in the Middle Ages used to have sects of "flagellents", whipping themselves to mortify their flesh as a kind of spiritual exercise. Maybe the desire for Muslim immigration comes from the same impulse. It would be too easy to accept Christian refugees. For a real challenge, they must seek out the most violent, callous, unsanitary, primitive people of all. If you are capable of loving the unlovable, tolerating the intolerable, you must have achieved a very advanced spiritual state indeed. It proves how much more enlightened and compassionate they are than their fellow westerners. It allows them to forgive themselves for the sin/privilege of being more civilized and humane than those they are importing.

Sagan is dead and was not particularly correct in all of his meanderings.
