Only one in three likely Democratic voters in the survey are first-time caucus-goers, who break decidedly toward Sanders. That compares with 60 percent in the final pre-caucus survey of 2008, when a wave of young voters and new participants helped Barack Obama overpower Clinton in Iowa.Sanders needs a surge of new voters to win, I guess. Where will O'Malley's voters go? Looks like an even split between Sanders and Hillary. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

So who cares most, who has the GOTV ability?
Even Cavuto seems to be pumping Rubio, saying Trump and Cruz might argue, and Rubio runs up the middle, whatever the hell that means. Levin says Trump move is not about FOX and their pro amnesty push, but only that Trump didn't want to be the target when he already has the lead. I'd say it could be both. And Cruz put out some weird flyer that Iowa officials and Rand Paul were slamming him for. Flyer said government grades their voting or something. Pretty weird, or desperate, or illegal. Passion is with Trump, ground team with Cruz ... or that seems to be the common wisdom. But could swing ten points either way, if one of those is really right and one wrong. May the best man (for the country) win. Posted by: Illiniwek at January 30, 2016 06:53 PM (5Gpe2) Posted by: sock_rat_brawndo at January 30, 2016 06:54 PM (Z8DIA) 17

Thank God I don't live in Iowa any more.
I don't think I could stand that much BS, now that I understand politics. Or not. Born in Sioux City, raised in South Sioux City, graduated from Western Iowa Tech, which was a closed down convent back then, unsuitable for a proposed debate by Cruz. Times have changed in the last 45 years! Back then I didn't follow politics at all. Today I do, but I really don't care who wins. Posted by: jwb7605 at January 30, 2016 06:56 PM (DofIg) 24
OK, I read the link. (I know, right?).
So they took into consideration who will definitely show, who will probably show, and how the evangelicals were under-weighted last time out. That's all good and sound. The wild card -- I'm hoping -- is the way the caucus process works... oh shit, I'm thinking about how the Dems caucus in Iowa. Where if you don't get 15% your people get jabbered at to come to another team. The Repubs don't do that do they? OK, I'm looking for a plausible non-Trump result. Need some help here. My question is half serious. There may be one more reason why the White House keeps inserting itself into press about these e-mails. Take out all the speculation about shady deals regarding the Clinton foundation money, or election plans to eject Hellary to bring in Biden, and all the other speculations.
They may be poo-pooing it to play down just who knew what, and when they knew it. If (hypothetically), we had an honest press, and IF we had a populace that still cared, this story could bring down the whole administration. So, of course it won't happen, and you're a hater for thinking it. Hater. Posted by: OneEyedJack at January 30, 2016 07:42 PM (kKHcp) 127

I think Paul is tired of the whole thing. Christie has no shot and I think has been spending his money. Fiorina will probably stay in. She likes doing the debates. I love how when someone criticizes Cruz its for something like a "mailer" or in the case of immigration, lies. Megan Kelly even admitted the evidence shows he was never for amnesty and he has declared it many times.
Trump meanwhile, has admitted he is in favor of single payer health insurance, plans on implementing amnesty, high tariffs, and loves when big government tramples on the little guys's (thats you) property rights through eminent domain. He has said those things during this campaign, with his own mouth. Not to mention his terrible judgment in considering Supreme Court appointments that could destroy the 2nd amendment. You know....but Cruz is an anchor baby. Oh, and Mitch McConnell and John McCain hate him. Trump has stubby fingers. PERIOD. DYK? He would have the same wealth he has today by investing the money Daddy gave him in the S&P 500. Those big deals tho! Why do you think he turned to reality TV? He blew the Television City deal and never recovered his reputation. The guy is a TV character....that is it. Its time to get serious. Cruz 2016. JackStraw, good one (polling equal to lint). You and I had exactly the same initial musings on the You Know Who phenomenon. That he might contribute by making a few central yet inexplicably taboo issues unavoidable for the GOP primaries. Additionally, I was hoping that in doing so, esp. one key issue, his efforts would help doom Yeb! and the other FL guy. Hard to say whether, in fact, there has been any contribution to the substance of things - certainly it's been incredibly disappointing that immigration lawlessness hasn't been forced into the dominant place it merits - but I wonder if You Know Who has in any case helped stunt or destroy the two FL guys anyway. Through sucking up all the oxygen, and in Yeb!'s case the seemingly effective personal mockery. Posted by: rhomboid at January 30, 2016 08:14 PM (QDnY+) 203

----- Always enjoy these doom-fraught pronouncements. Trump will be the best thing that ever happened to conservatism, by smuggling it in under his populism rather than see it aborted by unelectable over-preachment, or subverted by RINOism. We don't need anything "New" to build a wall. That Right has existed since this Nation existed. If we need new laws to protect our borders, we need new laws for everything. It is a fundamental responsibility of any Nation to guard it's borders. Posted by: Lincolntf at January 30, 2016 08:46 PM (2cS/G) The government does guard its borders, just very imperfectly. Having a wall, or not having a wall, is not the same as "not guarding the borders". And yes I do want a wall to be built. But I'm not going to pretend it is some sort of Constitutional mandate, because it isn't. Posted by: chemjeff at January 30, 2016 08:49 PM (5p18q) 302
At least building a fence/wall would actually put people to work. Unlike BOs stimulus which bought fancy office furniture for a few contributors before they folded their companies but had huge personal gains.

Posse comitatus is to prevent the US military from enforcing the laws against citizens, a reaction to Lincolns military courts trying citizen civilians during the civil war. Illegals are not citizens.
The national guard can still be used on the border and not violate posse comitatus as it excludes the guard. In addition a president can order military troops to patrol the border in the event of invasion. You could make a pretty good argument that unfettered illegal immigration is invasion. I assume that at least some of you have left the country at one time or another, seen the precautions taken by other Countries? We are by far the most porous Nation I've seen, and we accept the rapes, murders and thefts that come with accepting completely unaccountable human beings as if it's a punishment we somehow deserve. It's a garbage position, supported by nothing but Utopian shitheadery, yet it's somehow become a valid topic of debate. If you don't Wall it, you don't Own it. That's a law that predates the Constitution by, say, 10 or 20 thousand years, the Founding Fathers were well aware of it.

This whole conversation is just a deliberate obfuscation on what an "invasion" is. The colloquial use of the word is not the same as the military use of the word, but you want to muddy the water in order to declare every instance of someone being where they aren't supposed to be an act of military invasion and therefore a justifiable response is to call in the Marines. That just leads to undermining the whole point of having safeguards against the military exercising police powers in the first place.

There are federal lands in California right now where foreign drug cartels are running meth labs and growing marijuana crops, ruining the environment by the way, which I hear West Coasters care about. There are border towns where the cops can't do much because they are afraid of the cartels.
The cartels are already a military problem in Mexico. Increase the foreign invader population much further than it is already, and it'll become a military problem here anyway, just because the local cops *can't* solve it. Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at January 30, 2016 09:39 PM (IXCJi) 501

Speaking on the frosted tundra of the Dubuque, Iowa regional airport, Donald Trump returned to Iowa to a hero's welcome as his hulking Boeing 757 staged a dramatic flyby before landing on a tiny airstrip in front of nearly 1,000 cheering supporters. His campaign staff blared the theme music from the film 'Air Force One' as the plane, sporting massive letters spelling 'TRUMP,' zoomed past at low altitude and then climbed again, only to circle the airport before finally touching down. Trump then offered children the chance to run through the airplane. DailyMail Posted by: Laurie David's Cervix at January 30, 2016 09:43 PM (kdS6q) 516

Our problem is not that we don't have sufficient laws, responsible agencies or actors to secure the homeland and interior from the current foreign invasion, it's that the actors do not wish to act, the responsible agencies are being held back and the laws are simply not being enforced and are being undermined by the unconstitutional acts of the current President. My take on Cruz is that he is a very intellectual man and when faced with a problem, analyzes it, dissects it and comes up with the most efficient solution; a very rational way of doing things. Problem is most folks are driven by emotion and feelings and I think Cruz has a harder time than Trump appreciating that and tapping into it. This voter shaming flyers for instance, it could have been done differently - a gentler, more encouraging rather than shaming the lax voter.

Always enjoy these doom-fraught pronouncements. Trump will be the best thing that ever happened to conservatism, by smuggling it in under his populism rather than see it aborted by unelectable over-preachment, or subverted by RINOism. No, he won't do or say everything according to the Conservative Doctrine, but he'll make patriotic pragmatism fashionable again, which is one step away from conservatism.
Posted by: rrpjr at January 30, 2016 08:18 PM (s/yC1) I live in an area with a lot of Blue Dog or Reagan Democrats and with only a few exceptions(80 year olds), they are virtually all planning to vote for Trump, with Cruz as #2. All of them. They know as well as I do , that Trump is not going to be Mr.Super Conservative. That is his appeal, actually. I already know I am voting for someone who is going to do some big things very much in favor of restoring my country into a place of freedom and making it more secure. He is also going to do some things to piss me off. I have to accept that and I am willing to do so in order to begin to turn the ship around. Trump may use his own pen and phone to reverse some of Obama's EO, but he is more likely to work with Congress to get legislation passed or defeated than Obama. He will begin to whittle away at what great damage has been done by Obama and the Democrats. He is no more going to do a complete reversal on what has happened to this country in four years than Cruz can do. He'll be honest about it, and I believe that he will be able to have negotiating skills that lawyer Cruz does not have. I will certainly vote for Cruz if he was the nominee, but I can pretty much bet that isn't going to happen. So I'll be thrilled when the Donald nominates him for AG. "Mexico is a failed narco-state"
My favorite: when Bill Clinton ordered that members of the Mexican military be brought to the U.S. and given the full array of secret special operations training. This would, Clinton said, let the Mexican government get the upper hand on Mexico's narcotics cartels. Instead, as soon as these guys got back down south, they all defected from the government and started working for the cartels as highly skilled assassins. Then they struck out on their own and formed an entirely new narcotraficante cartel, Los Zetas. Posted by: torquewrench at January 30, 2016 10:12 PM (noWW6) 632

He wants to deport all the illegals and then let all the "good ones" back in.
That is touchback amnesty. Furthermore it's also a very stupid way to do amnesty. If you are going to grant people amnesty, why go through the trouble to deport them in the first place? Posted by: chemjeff at January 30, 2016 10:05 PM (5p18q) Chemjeff, the current immigration law states that if one overstays their visa or is deported for an immigration violation, they are to be deported and depending on the length of their violation, etc. have to wait 3-7 years before they can apply for another visa to reenter. So , in essence, everyone who is here illegally, can at some point reapply to come back in once they go home. Posted by: Arson Wells at January 30, 2016 10:13 PM (UnJ7w) Well, needless to say, I'd give fair warning. Put on the Mexican TV and radio that there's a new sherriff in town, and that a shoot-to-kill policy will be in effect as of such-and-such a date. And make it clear that immediate surrender, or flight back into Mexico would not draw fire. Not all that different from the rules that apply if you are accosted by civilan law enforcement, and resist arrest, right? Or if you are caught trying to infiltrate a military base. In fact, there is the key to make it work. Have the Fed take ownership of a ten-foot strip of land on the border from the Pacific Ocean all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Make that strip of land a military base, and call it Ft.America. Existing legal crossing points would not be included. That way, any illegal border crossers would be automatically infiltrating a military base, and subject to the laws applicable. And the military would be enforcing the law on their own turf, so Posse Comitatus would not apply. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 30, 2016 10:22 PM (Z8fuk) 661
