Tucker Carlson: Trump Is Shocking, Vulgar, and Right

I saw this yesterday but didn't put it up because it's so persuasive people will take my linking it as an actual endorsement.

I'm not endorsing Trump by posting this. But it's a hell of a piece.

4 Agreed. Tucker isn't endorsing him either, just laying out why he thinks Trump is ruling the roost (for now anyway). You don't have to endorse Trump to agree with the points he makes.

6 Like Michael Barone earlier he is grabbing his compatriots by the lapels, shaking them, and shouting "Will you please wake up already?"

Whether they will do so is in God's hands.

Ace has been on it from the beginning. This isn't what we wanted but what we wanted turns out to have been the lies of a nymphomaniacally cheating bitch in a red dress all along. What it is is a change, and a change which will hurt the fops and con men in Washington more than and before it hurts the average American. It's a change which does not fall within the trajectory of socialism, which is like hitting green on a roulette table at this point.

At the very least, it would break up the monotony of "socialists win! Obama shoots 16 holes in one! Republicans unable to hold their 18 point 4th quarter lead despite their usually reliable defense, again!" stories four times a day, every day.

82 I have no idea who Tucker Carson is,-probbaly because I never watched news programs to begin with-except for PBS or BBC and haven't watched any for several years. So, my question is, Is he gay? Is that what the comment "I get more p*** than you do? means or does it instead mean Trump is such a thin skinned man that some crack about his hair sets him off or both?l

And yes, Mr. Trump your hair is a a little weird and you get entirely more p*** than I've ever gotten. ;^)

Now, when some port side pundit explains clearly why Sanders is making ground and places the blame on the same shallow self-dealing time-serving hacks the ride the merry-g-round between NGO-admin agency-congressional staff then you will really know that establishment is frightened to the soles of their tassel loafers.

99 I'm not endorsing Trump by posting this. But it's a hell of a piece.

I am at my wit's end about the inability of people to comprehend that analyzing a matter is not even remotely the same as endorsing it.

One of the hallmarks of an intelligent mind is the ability to explicate, carefully and clearly, a position with which one disagrees.

Furthermore, it is imperative that one be able to analyze matters as they are, not as one wishes them to be.

Thus, noting x y and z about whatever should not even remotely give rise to the instantaneous assumption that said notation equals endorsement or acceptance of the matter.

I can set out why Bernie Sanders has appeal to younger voters. I can explain why Hillary Clinton's because vagina resonates with a certain subset of women of a certain age. By no means should that be taken as meaning I, personally, comprehend that appeal.

Frankly, many people have revealed some very telling, to say nothing of ugly, aspects of their intellectual capacity and reading comprehension.

Think about this, Horde. The owner of this blog was hesitant to link to an article on his own blog because of concerns that the mere linking and notation that it was well done would be taken as something more than it it.

Yeah. Yeah, that says something and it's nothing good.

and it's their problem to fix. Of course, like everything else they
can't fix it."

An observation originally from John Schindler: the Republican establishment completely ignored white working class voters for decades.

Then someone came along and neatly tailored a pitch to those voters and immediately vaulted to the head of the pack. Oh no! Panic in the establishment ranks!

So, then, what did the GOP establishment do? Realize and admit their previous error? Change course themselves? Of course not.

Instead the establishment redoubled their efforts on the same policies which had alienated those voters in the first place, while loudly telling those voters that they're hopeless rubes and useless fools for backing this newly emergent figure. Yeah, that'll end well.

Personally, I think all of the pundits are being way too optimistic on every front. I happen to agree with National Review that Trump is a bad candidate and he would--if elected--make a terrible president. Granted, I'll vote for Trump in the general if he wins the nomination but I have no illusions about him.

Yet even now, as I write this, National Review still refuses to admit there might be such a thing as an Establishment or that this Establishment's refusal to stand up to Obama and the Democrats and address the concerns of its own base--particularly when it comes to immigration--are the reasons Trump is the frontrunner in the primaries.

In short, the GOP Establishment is going to keep doing and saying the same pollyanna shit until the very end. Shocking as it may seem, they might be the ones who do the third party split.

To me, Cruz appeals to an intellectual and policy oriented type of person, that sort of person who argues in the same halls the Tucker Carlson talks about the establishment residing in.

To me, Trump is not of that world. He isn't interested in position papers, the minutia of policy, making sure that the witty epigram has been polished to perfection. Trump is actually a bottom-line, get something accomplished on a deadline, used-and-useful on the account books person. Absolutely flashy and flamboyant, but with a hard center of accomplishing something, and he projects that.

You aren't going to win over fly-over country with position papers from the AEI, you will when you have someone who can speak about the logistics of actually constructing something from the ground up.

The answer is that they won't, and if they can't fundraise, they might lose their cushy jobs. THIS^^^^

I'm pretty sure I was the first (or close to it anyway) saying that we should support Trump and use him as a knife in a game of mumbly-peg or, if you prefer, the car in a game of chicken with the GOPe.

With the idea that either we get what we want-

I was assuming Prez Cruz or one of the other conservatives as well as policies we wanted

-or they get nothing of what they want and President Trump as well.

There is so much political and social energy out there for Trumpian and conservative policies-

that it seemed like a no brainer for the GOPe to pick up on it and run the table.

But-

Nope.

So, fuck those guys, I want Cruz,

but I'll happily pull the lever for Trump if it comes to that.

He, at least, is going to give me one thing I want, and also is the only candidate that has the capacity to surprise (that's both good and bad).

233 Its because they don't get how enraged, infuriated, and beyond rational concern people have gotten. We have given the GOP all its needed over and over for over 2 decades and all they've done is cop a squat on us. Enough. Time to pay. They did this to themselves, as others noted above.

I'm no Tucker Carlson fan but that was an excellent piece. Of course, this is obvious stuff that anyone with a brain should have been well aware of long ago. 274 >>>I've read enough of Ace's posts to not regard this as an endorsement of Trump, and I realize it's quite possible to see that the entire dismissal of its base by the GOP lead to Trump's rise. I'm also able to see that one can criticize Trump without it meaning that you "hate" him and you will pull the lever for someone you consider a loud mouthed, vulgar narcissist because you think and hope at least he'd be better than Hillary or Bernie.

just so people know where I'm coming from:

People sometimes tell me trump is vulgar, uninformed, easily flattered, narcissistic, boorish, unprincipled, unscrupulous, and unconservative.

I know all that.

From the beginning of this race, and I think I said this a bunch of times early, my dream would have been if someone more respectable and someone better informed had seized upon Trump's insight (or exploit) and made it is his own.

He is a very imperfect vessel.

The reason I don't read him out of the party, as many do, is that he's one of the few making his stand on these issues.

Cruz does, mostly, so I support Cruz too. Cruz is imperfect as well, having mainly to do with his own charisma problems and his own ideological problems -- while Trump is basically a nativist liberal, Cruz is a very, very ideological guy. As much as Trump's liberalism sucks for conservatism, I laugh at the idea this will hurt us in the general -- especially given that the establishment types always warn us we need to be "moderate" or even liberal on these issues to win.

Cruz might be too ideological for the general -- non-partisans consider it off-putting. Trump would not have that problem, barely being a "Republican" in the first place.

My dream is that either Trump gets some of Cruz's brains or Cruz gets some of Trump's brashness and ability to connect with Reagan Democrats.

I don't think either of those things will happen, of course.

But I can't rule either man out. I know all republicans will try to keep taxes low because they all do (mostly). But there aren't any others speaking on these issues.

You are either a nationalist or a universalist. And what is a nationalist? A nationalist is someoen who thinks that American citizens have, or should have, an advantage conferred on them by the American government. Like, only American citizens, or legal green card holders or H1-b holders, can work here.

Universalists think that the concept of nationality is outmoded and Americans should have exactly zero advantage over any other person in the world.

That is an abominable claim to me -- yet this is what the establishment actually believes. At least, all its money men are converted to this sort of radical libertarian universalism as pushed by the Wall Street Journal, and they in turn convert the people they donate to.

I'm not electing a president of the world -- I'm electing a president of Americans.

And if a candidate does not seem capalble of uttering the hateful words, "The greatest good to all, and no ill-will to anyone from anywhere around the world, but in all cases, Americans and the American interest must come before all other considerations and social goods," then he is, to my mind, a universalist and implicitly anti-american.

278 @114...agree. Mark Steyn's take on the Trump march is a good start. And his column on attending a rally in Bernie's backyard of Vermont is excellent.

There are many afraid to admit they like the non-politically correctness of Trump. I love it when he makes talking heads go splody. Love it.

This is similar to the days of yore, when I read propaganda stating that Reagan was an old, doddering actor who had no idea what he was doing. I believed the propaganda vs trying to research (which was not that easy in 1980). If I remember correctly, HW Bush was the chosen won at the time, right? And he became the VP with some probable arm twisting and Reagan's wanting peace. Ok. Fast forward to 2016. We have a renegade non-politician, beholding to no lobby, no back scratching politician, no pork in those barrels of promises if you vote for him. Funding his own campaign. Totally unprecedented, my friends.

I am thinking he is "too big to fail." He is not wanting to fail, should he have the honor of being elected. Think of that, an "honor" vs a "coronation" of fake columns and unicorn farts. And I do think he will consider it an honor.

The world sees him, on stage, in full Trumpism, lamblasting opponents. I have seen him talking calmly and thoughtfully to individual reporters...and I think, "this is the real guy." Not the "your fired" persona. But, like you, I have no idea. He could be like Archie Bunker in real life, hanging out in his gold livingroom in his Fruit of the Loom, scratching his back with a solid gold back-scratcher from an Egyptian tomb and eating Planters Peanuts by the can. Belching and having his supermodel wife tell him to knock it off (which is a typical day in Casa Blinky).

Ok, policy. Yada. Let's pretend you are Trump, President Too Big To Fail and who will smilte our enemies and protect us, as he promised. His words. Do you think he is going to hire a crony hedge fund dude to be Secretary of Defense? Do you think he might listen to the Generals (unlike the Won who listents to valjar and creates ROE's that endanger our military). Do you think he does not mean it with jobs? It won't happen in a day, but, I figure, after the last eight years of destroying our country, brick by brick, appearing weak to our enemies, not supporting our police or military, well, hail, I am ok with Trump.

I am not a Trump girl, but am leaning Trump.I was Perry then Cruz, now leaning Trump or whatever happens.

285 ATC,
I would recommend that posters read Thou Shalt Not Commit Logical Fallacies website first but then someone would blame me for endorsing a candidate.

I am a poli-sci prof that has done some work in campaigns using data and published research in the area. I am also one of those rare conservative profs. I used to do fieldwork so due to my current position, reading political blogs is the next best thing to take the pulse of the electorate.

I seldom post because I find arguing with people who use rhetoric and insults instead of dialectic worthless. I do find it fascinating just what rhetoric they chose to employ and where the memes come from.

BTW, I have seen the same dynamic in NVIDIA v. ATI, AMD vs. Intel, Glock v. Non-Glock, brands of AR's, etc. Roughly 5-10% of abusive posters that repeatedly post the same thing in multiple threads.

My personal suspicion is that a significant number of these type posters may be paid or ordered to do so particularly where certain brands or candidates are at issue and the other half have psychological issues.

My take is that the Trump campaign if successful will rewrite the script for presidential races. As the Dems have increasingly emphasized identity politics, the Rep. party was overdue to follow.

We are becoming a Balkanized people where control of the central government increasingly dictates winners and losers. At some point, identity politics coupled with massive demographic change could resemble the last days of Yugoslavia where every group sees politics as a zero sum game.

BTW, I can also recommend Sean Trende's three part article on the race at Real Clear Politics for an even handed look at the race. Part III is here http://preview.tinyurl.com/zh6j7xz

There is a report that novelty spinning bow ties manufactured in China by People's Novelty Company have been found to have killed 27 clowns. Forensic analysis has determined that sharp edges caused massive neck trauma and in two cases decapitation.
People's Novelty Company reached a settlement earlier this year with the Federal Trade Commission regarding sales of Chinese Finger Puzzles that failed to include instructions in their safe use during sex.

In point of fact, I'm beginning to lose all respect for National Review for not sitting him down and saying, point blank, you're a professional. Act like it.

I now get furious if I click a link and it's to something Williamson has written because I don't want to give him any traffic at all. This upsets me because before Williamson went completely off the deep end with the open hatred of any who could even possibly say anything positive about Trump, he was an interesting writer.

As the democrats moved further left, driving more democrats out of the part and to the GOP, the republicans became more sympathetic to the liberal point of view.

Kinda like all this Muslim immigrants moving to Europe, or the United States and retaining their culture and their religion makes the United States and Europe less Christian.

(A) How many of those voters really care for the ins and outs of Constitutional lectures and policy position papers?

(B) How many of those voters would like the government to competently and quietly go about its business and stop bothering them?

Which group are you going to appeal to win the office, Group A or Group B?

Now add in that there are a lot of people who think the government is out to get them and make their lives harder and they want that to stop who do they think is going to accomplish that?

(A) The guy with the perfect credentials and the endorsement of the same chattering class who have accomplished nothing that they can see?

(B) The brash loud guy who can point at some physical, visible accomplishments in his life and career?

Which guy are these voters going to go with?

There are universal values and universal laws, but there is not and cannot for centuries be a universal government to enforce them universally. We should not throw away our advantages based on the false hope that the world will come together and be that better arbitor for us, especially on the advice of people who tell us to our faces that they hate us.

And most of all, liberals know that socialism isn't worth it, but the mushy pop-morality of the left makes them go "well, we at least have to tryyyyyy" secure in the knowledge that the risk is being assumed by others, and they won't truly be called upon to sacrifice for this vision.

I'm not afraid of his tax plan, his trade ideas, his immigration ideas. These all work for me.

As the Constitution very clearly states in the pre-amble:

"secure the Blessings of Liberty TO OURSELVES AND OUR POSTERITY".

Citizenship should be an advantage in the nation. This is one of the bases of the nation-state based on individual liberty. Other nations - commie nations, monarchies, and party-oriented collectivist shitholes - view their citizens as subjects and tools to be owned by the government and to be used and abused at the pleasure of that government.

BTW, I use the term "globalist" for those idiots who are against the notion of the nation-state. "Universalist" carries other connotations.

359 I would easily wager 9 out of 10 care more about the border than they do abortion.

No, we are just aware that abortion is a long battle and the border can't wait. Almost nothing on earth matters more to us than the lives of helpless unborn babies, but its a matter of tactics and timing.
Posted by: Christopher Taylor

Well, this Evangelical doesn't think any politician is really going to be able to do a damn thing about abortion except talk about it. I don't care what time frame you wan to look at, abortion is always going to be here and legal in all 50 states.

Most people I know in that community look at abortion now as a morality issue and not a political one anymore.

But the border is most certainly something the political system could fix overnight if we had the will.

I think the assumption about the crow-eating says more about you than the Trump supporters.

IN case you missed it, millions of your fellow Americans have taken a look at the alternative to Trump and have found him the least worst option.

That is not their fault--don't blame them and call them stupid, ignorant and rubes.

To spell it out more clearly: Choice A is Trump. Choice B is a Democrat or a Republican who will govern as a Democrat. Choice A has a non-zero chance of doing something good for American. Choice B has a zero chance.

We're buying a fucking $2 lotto ticket with Trump 'cause that's all the fucking money we have left.

I still believe that Obama has been permitted to do the damage he has done (and has yet to do) because he is being used to punish this country for its wickedness and apathy. This sentiment quoted above would fall well in line with that belief.

Ii wasn't suggesting that you didn't know that Trump was narcissistic and boorish. It's also been clear that you would prefer Cruz and that each man could benefit from gaining personality traits of the other one. That's why my "ideal" (as ideal as one can get regarding politicians) would be if they were on a team together, but I don't see it happening, Trump wouldn't pick Cruz as VP and Trump wouldn't want to be Cruz' VP. And actually aside from giving Trump some advice re the Constitution I think he'd be rather wasted as VP

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at January 29, 2016 03:34 PM (w4NZ8)

373 Carlson starts out very well. His description of the disconnect between the GOPe and the average Republican (hell, American) voter is on-the-nose. They don't have the same problems, they don't see those problems and dismiss them as ignorance or racism--particularly immigration.

The problem is that Trump is not a solution. He's maybe identified it, perhaps even a catalyst for it, but he has no interest in anything resembling an answer.

He wants vastly bigger government, mostly to make whatever "deals" he thinks are essential to governing. On his signature issue, he's in favor of "Touchback Amnesty".

Yes, he mentions building a wall and with gusto. Sounds great. He's speaking taboos and that's exciting.

But it's all underpants gnomes with this guy. HE EXPRESSES MY ANGER! Then what?

It's not about Trump. It's not about Trump at all. It's about you. You want to be heard. You want them to listen. They are in charge and you are on the outside. Everytime you vote for somebody, he or she becomes them.

But where Tucker goes completely off the rails is Trump's ability to win.

No way in Hell he wins the general election. No way in Hell.

Here are some numbers:
Trump: 34.4/57.8
Bush: 29.0./54.2
Clinton: 42.2/51.4

Those are RCP favorable/unfavorables. Unfavorables do not change. Once people hate you, they hate you forever.

Ace was on Twitter last night saying how he didn't see Rubio's charm and why people commented on it. Why? Because Rubio's already got the black mark from him. Ace can't see anything but Go8 and Ace will never stop seeing it. Whether Ace goes through the Five Stages of Pragmatism fully or not, the casual voter who finds a politician unfavorable is not coming back.

The GOP cannot, cannot, cannot nominate Trump or Bush. Then the whole idea of America is done. And it's been in a lot more danger before -- Wilson, Roosevelt, Johnson, Carter.

I'm furious it came to this. I couldn't believe Rubio's jumping feet-first into Gang of 8. These people have the Internet, they can read blogs. I couldn't believe Cruz argued for the tripling of H1Bs. Make all the arguments about economic growth that you want, people don't want jobs given away.

At least Romney had a clue. He might or might not have been credible, but he spoke to immigration. He knew somehow what people were saying about it.

What I could believe is that Trump came out against Romney's immigration record as being too aggressive.

The Con Man gives you what you want in the moment. He knows you'll buy the 120 proof medicine if he sells it to you right from the wagon. You'll go home, it won't help you and he'll be gone to the next town.

Trump won't care. He's just doing a bit. It's another reality show, another wrestling appearance. Then he moves on and blames the jerks who betrayed him.

How big is the list of people we're supposed to hate because of Trump? It now includes Fox News. (But not CNN.) It includes Ted Cruz. (But not Hillary Clinton.) It doesn't include Reid, Pelosi or Schumer because Trump is friends with them.

It's not about what Trump says or what Trump believes or what Trump says he believes. It's about Trump.

And Trump isn't about you.

Because at that point the parents don't know what to do with the kid. They believe (and may well be right but it does not actually matter) that resistance will further entrench his idiocy.

They may hope that allowing him to go through the "phase" will enable him to come back to his senses later.

I do not envy parents in this era... it must be pure hell, all the madness working its way into their children's minds. It must be noted, too, that the kid ending up this way does not necessarily mean bad parenting; in the end, every human being makes up their own mind about what to allow into their minds, and whether to let it change them or no.

The parents may or may not have done a good job of raising him, but in the end, the boy chooses for himself what his life will be like.

The Moody Blues had it right when they said Just what you want to be, you will be in the end.

1. "Beautiful Losers" like Tucker Carlson
2. "Obvious Ogres", like Pat Buchanan

I think one nice solution to the no firing thang-

would be to by a large parcel of land near a crappy, isolated border town like Del Rio, TX.

Set up a bunch of low cost trailer homes fitted with crappy desks and chairs-

and transfer hundreds, if not thousands of the bureaucrats with a cut in pay of course

I dunno about that.

Which of the candidates seems to make an emotional connection with the voters? Which one seems to have the "common touch"?

This is a political campaign, not an issue of Imprimis. It's going to be a lot more of the calliope than Cicero. Issues, when they actually appear at all, are going to be those that a person can understand with their gut. Few people have sufficient information to make a logical decision based upon issues, they ride on their experience and instinct. Those issues that really hit home on a gut level are those that are going to drive the old circus train onward.

That position paper discussing the importance of the second comma in the Second Amendment may really get your small circle all a-swoon, but it means nothing out on the campaign trail.

448 I really surprised that people can get that excited over Trump or for Cruz. I trust neither, but they are the top of the crop.

Trump is Trump. NY Democrat with a foot on both sides of an issue. IF he is actually a nationalist, then HOPEFULLY he will deal with the immigration and Islamic threats as a priority.

Cruz was my favorite til the Iran deal. That was a serious breach of trust. At least he ended up right on TPA*

So we will have to see if either gets elected AND does the right things. That right thing is going to have to start with a lot of preemptive action against "the system", which will be in full opposition (leftists, burrocrats, gope curruptocrats united).

That preemptive action is going to have to be a "pen and phone" presidency, as much as WE hate that. At least it would be great to throw that back in the face of Obama cultists.

* I was under the impression that Cruz had voted for TPA; just now looked up he went with the right vote. There is so much going on in politics and in the convoluted way that things are "reported" that you have to spend a lot of time wonking out. the Repub party has only 24% of Registered voters as Members...

Less than 1/4....

29% are Dem.... Less than a THIRD...

42% are registered independent...

So the largest voting block of the electorate has REJECTED the message of BOTH parties...

think on that a second...

A party that represents less than 1/4 of the electorate, is able to hold power in both Houses of Congress.... and may win the Presidency...

While a party with less than a Third of the electorate, has somehow driven the agenda in Washington for many years...

People no longer trust EITHER party, yet are only supposed to vote for One or the Other...

Then.... in comes Trump.... outsider... pissing off BOTH parties Elite Politicians and talking heads...

The very people that the 42% have rejected...

There is no perfect candidate. Even Romney had his faults.

The only thing somebody can do is decide for his/herself whether the flaws of any particular candidate overwhelm the good that candidate might do.

Oddly enough, different people make differing judgments regarding both the flaws and the good points of various candidates.

He apparently did (because Fox accepted cheaper ad buys) even though his no show does not appear to have affected the debate ratings:

Ratings for debates fall as the debate cycle happens. 23
million people watched CNN's first debate but only 11 million watched
CNN's second debate. Similarly, 24 million watched the first Fox News
debate (the first debate of the cycle so I would expect it to have the
highest ratings) but only 13 million watched the second Fox news debate.
Those numbers do not support the theory that Trump Trumped all over the

"Asked about what to do with the people here illegally, however, he (Cruz) stressed that he had never tried to undo the goal of allowing them to stay.

"The amendment that I introduced removed the path to citizenship, but it did not change the underlying work permit from the Gang of Eight," he said during a recent visit to El Paso. ...

Mr. Cruz said recent polling indicated that people outside Washington support some reform, including legal status without citizenship.

Besides barring citizenship while instituting some level of legalization for those here already, Mr. Cruz has proposed increasing the number of green cards awarded annually, to 1.35 million from 675,000. He also wants to eliminate the per-country limit that he said left applicants from countries like Mexico, China and India hamstrung when they tried to gain legal entry to this country.

Besides barring citizenship while instituting some level of
legalization for those here already, Mr. Cruz has proposed increasing
the number of green cards awarded annually, to 1.35 million from
675,000. He also wants to eliminate the per-country limit that he said
left applicants from countries like Mexico, China and India hamstrung
when they tried to gain legal entry to this country.

489 "Besides barring citizenship while instituting some level of legalization

green cards awarded annually, to 1.35 million from 675,000."

Cruz having proposed to quadruple the allowable H-1B visas (from numbers already boosted hugely under Obama) came up the other day.

A Cruz apologist said, well, Cruz had been informed that there was a terrible shortage of STEM workers in America, and once he was told that wasn't true, he walked back his proposal.

What I haven't been able to figure out is whether the original Cruz proposal said even one word about limiting those visas to bona fide STEM applicants.

Note as well that the vetting on these supposedly STEM-restricted H-1Bs is ridiculously lax. Around here there is the infamous story of a subcontinental immigrant landlord who was bringing in underage girls on H-1B STEM visas and then forcing them into prostitution. The feds didn't see anything weird about 14-year-olds being listed as highly experienced software engineers.

502 Carlson's essay makes a lot of the same points Ace has been making, and Mark Steyn too. I liked early on, when he asked what all those conservative brainiac think-tanks have really accomplished with all the billions of dollars they've collected from the Right over the past decades. Nothing, really, and yet they're not ashamed of this abysmal record, and can't believe that anyone would suggest that they're just not up to the job.

Watch, though: there's still time for them to try the rueful faced "We *hear* you!" gambit, with promises that this time they'll pay attention to our "concerns". This time for realz. They've lied for years to conservatives, and not only are they not ashamed to have this thrown in their faces, they can't even really understand it. Do they even know what a lie is anymore?

No, they THOUGHT it would mean fewer eyeballs. I am not seeing evidence there actually were fewer eyeballs than could be expected though. There were more viewers than the CNN debate before it and there were fewer viewers that dropped from the first to the second debate on Fox than on CNN (24 mil-13 mil = 11 mil difference on Fox vs 23 mil -11 mil = 12 mil drop on CNN). That does not provide evidence to support the supposition that Trump's absence affected viewership.

509 A large part of this pro-Trump argument consists of "well he couldn't be any worse than the Establishment has been." That's seductive because on some issues the GOPe has been awful. Immigration is probably the best possible example.

But as much as I hate the Establishment, I can't blame them for too much of this country's decline over the past ~30 years. Nor can I blame the conservative intellectuals, who tend to agree that the Establishment is a bunch of sell-outs.

I'll put it this way: the country has gotten more depraved over the past thirty years, but there's nothing any Republican could have done about it. Gay marriage was going to be a thing no matter what we did. We can try to push it off a couple of years, but the people want it. No Trump, no different GOP can defeat the Zeitgeist, and the Zeitgeist wants man-on-man anal to be celebrated. People in this country actually support that stuff. Similarly, yes, the government spends too much, and maybe with the right politicians we can cut that back somewhat. But the fact is that the ranks of the Free Shit Army are huge, and the bulk of the country - including many Republican voters - loves them some gibsmedat.

If you're angry at the GOPe, fine. I want to replace them with real conservatives. But if you support Trump, you're basically throwing in the towel on all that stuff based on the *hope* - and that's all it is - that he'll do something about immigration.

515 It's a good piece. There's a lot to recommend in it. But there are also some gigantic lies in there: first and foremost that the country hasn't gotten more conservative in the last forty years. And, Tucker backs up this claim with two words: "Come on."

Granted, Obama is an unvarnished leftist and he's out of the closet on that. But, if you want to take a stroll down memory lane, conservatives won on a lot of the biggest issues of the last few decades. No where is this more true than in the battle of capitalism v. socialism. We won that one, not just in the USA, but globally. It was our defining cause, and we won it so thoroughly that people have already forgotten how incredibly awful socialism is, and are flirting with our friend from Vermont. Even the Chinese remain communist in name only.

Tough on crime. People forget. This was a huge issue through the Clinton administration. Conservatives won. Jail terms got way longer. Police got smart. Crime is down 50%. As with socialism, we won this issue so thoroughly that people are forgetting the lessons, and want to let criminals out of jail early again.

Big, bad ass military. Sure, Obama and Clinton both let it wane in size, but these things go through cycles. But don't underestimate the impact of Reagan's military build-up, its dominance over the USSR, the Gulf War rout, and our (initial, at least) success in the Iraq war and Afghanistan on the views of the American public. They deeply believe in a strong foreign policy and a strong military. That's conservative, and it's a big part of Trump's appeal. Make America Great Again means make America Strong Again.

Marginal tax rates. We won on this. They're never going back up to where they used to be. In fact, we won so thoroughly on this that it presents a problem for the country's long-term fiscal solvency: the middle class wants generous retirement benefits, but doesn't want to pay for them.

There's plenty of other things that I won't mention because they're less important or fall into the category of standing athwart history and stopping liberals from messing things up, but the misery of the Obama years should not make us all forget that a great many conservative things have occurred in the last few decades.
