So did anyone that watched the debate last night think that Fox News shoved in even more commercial breaks than any of the previous debates? I really think they are the worst at presenting the debates. And their "moderators" and their "we're just treating this like our usual tv show interview" questions aren't that much better than the shithead liberals on the other networks. The Fox Business debates were certainly the best. Posted by: buzzion at January 29, 2016 09:35 AM (zt+N6) 29

Nothing jumped out to me as standing out too much. Cruz positioned himself as being the front runner and then played not to lose the rest of the night. === The entire debate idea is pretty much outdated at this point. At least as a televised event moderated by journalists. I do not know if the alternaTrump event is what will eventually replace it, but I think its clear something has to. Maybe preserve some of it through a bloggingheads type televised Skype event, but otherwise get out of it altogether. Again, not so much because biased but because old and crusty. Less than one percent economic growth = stock market rise because the Fed probably won't raise interest rates before the election, which means free use of money for more stock purchases for the usual suspects.
Meanwhile, Japan has NEGATIVE interest rates which is quite a turnaround for a savings culture that were supposed to emulate just a couple of decades ago. Meanmeanwhile, the IMF is bailing out oil-dependent sovereigns because shale and fracking have permanently disrupted world oil prices. Meanmeanmeanwhile, weird things happen everyday on the China stock markets an hour before closing. The Hill JUST IN: Trump-less Fox News debate nearly lowest rated of the primary season: http://hill.cm/IUjbCuI Note, TV advertising is sold at a certain promised ratings level, and if the program doesn't hit that, the network has to either give refunds or free airtime to the advertisers as compensation. So, Trump just cost Fox millions in revenue. Posted by: Laurie David's Cervix at January 29, 2016 09:52 AM (kdS6q) 106
Well it would be nice if there were real debates not sponsored by the networks. They get to air them and that's it. No more of their "stars" being the moderators. Because all that is, is them trying to get screen time for themselves. And again Fox is the worst at that. And all they are trying to do is get sound bites that they can run for the next few days.

Always fun to watch assholes like this shit all over the people who play by the rules,
Yet, he thinks you have liberty when the rules some have to follow don't apply to others. You know, that's the tack I'd like to see pushed on the immigration issue-- the fact is most of us oppose amnesty because we want the rules to mean something. We don't want them to be applied selectively, and we don't want people who violate them to be rewarded with absolution. We don't want the Ruling Class to ignore enforcing them (y'know, their job) to advance their own dishonest agenda. We don't want to see selective justice. We want to live in a society with law and order. Amnesty, illegals, de facto open borders all shit on that. Frankly, THAT is undemocratic. Did I miss anything interesting in the last 45 minutes of the debate?
Nothing jumped out to me as standing out too much. Cruz positioned himself as being the front runner and then played not to lose the rest of the night. Everybody just seemed ok, and I don't think anyone fell on their face, except Carson who seemed surprised when he was asked a question. I don't think you missed anything, by the end I was just praying for it to be over. Cruz was best when he was in command, but he also had smarmy moments and miscued, awkward humor. Rand was the best he's been, so curse him for giving me little flickers of hope. Christie is quite a competent debater as long as you know that he was there for 9/11 and wants all of your records to make sure you don't do that to New Jersey again. Carson knew who or what an Estonia is and that it's in NATO. Jeb wouldn't have been awful if he weren't already Jeb. Worst part was when all the Senators yelled at each other about how they voted on amendments that didn't pass. Final tally in the Bandersnatch household was that Bourbon won. Thanks! So scumbag FNC had about half the viewers vs last time, 2nd lowest of all debates. But it's not a fair comparison, because the lowest one was on FBN, which is a relatively new network that is not as widely available. The 11-13 million is half the first debate where Brett allegedly leaked that they had security ready to escort Trump out (by force) if he misbehaved I guess. So that was not a lot of respect, and they got that out to the media, rather than just be prepared. And then they also had Megyn on the sexist attack thing, trying to take down Trump early.
" Fox let it be known that the moderators had been prepared to forcibly remove Trump from the debate if he failed to follow the rules. Brett Baier even revealed their cute little speech before they would escort him to the elevator: "We don't want to have to escort you to the elevator outside this boardroom. But we're locked and loaded." from Coulter's post on The Hill And when Trump responded "just Rosie", Megyn was prepared (she revealed she told the other moderator men not to "rescue" her, she wanted to take on Trump herself) and came back with accusatory condescending tone ... "it was more than that", and brought up the on your knees thing, which the woman it was said to laughed off, and said Trump was nothing but supportive and respectful. But Megyn had her lines prepped, context be damned. So Megyn gets her "strong sexy woman" merit badge and some fame, but we don't find out about Trump's big open door or about his deportation details. Because those are what people praise about Trump, and FOX is an open border Rubio/Jeb support team ... apparently. Posted by: Illiniwek at January 29, 2016 10:27 AM (5Gpe2) 254

In a climate where asking the right questions is forbidden on grounds of taste and social pressure.
Where theft and coercion on racial, religious, and cultural grounds is applauded, encouraged, and on the rise everywhere. Where law enforcement acts according to one set of rules in word, and another or several others in deed. Where the financial instruments for building and securing wealth have become siphons and pretexts for taxation. Where the one institution which can unite all people of different races and cultures through the universal values of family and the pursuit of knowledge - education - has become a tool for sowing discord and frustration of every kind, and creating a dependent class of misinformed debtors. And with all of this betrayal and sabotage enforced not through the law or some forthright and transparent process, but by slander, insinuation, lawfare, identity politics, and credentialism.... We're going to need an asshole. An asshole who speaks over, under, and around the tastemakers. An asshole who asks unpleasant questions and says unpleasant things. An asshole who will hold individuals, and not cultural edifices or artifacts, responsible for bad outcomes. An asshole who is not trying to convince anyone of the rightness of his methods, but of his goals. Let us pray we have a right and proper asshole on our hands to do the work we have flinched from and failed to do. Posted by: Ghost of kari - WAR at January 29, 2016 10:50 AM (xuouz) 353

OK... I went and looked at the the ratings for the other debates this season and I can't see where Trump's absence effected viewership. A little over 13 million people watched last night which is down from the 24 million that watched the first Fox news debate (the first debate of this election cycle) but that is not the important number comparison. I would expect viewership to be higher for the first couple debates and to peter out after that.
So I looked at the two CNN debates (both of which Trump participated in). The first CNN debate garnered 23 million viewers but only 11 million people viewed the second CNN debate. using that as a yardstick, I would be hard pressed to see any unexpected drop in the second Fox debate that could be accounted for by trump's absence. There would be at least one die-hard Democrat who would always vote to acquit and want her autograph after the trial was over. She knows it, and any prosecutor in the US Attorney's office for DC or SDNY knows it. She is unconvictable, hence unindictable. Just knowing the connection isn't enough --- just ask Sharyl Atkisson, whose stories about Obama scandals kept getting killed. Steyn has been good as a somewhat biased observer looking in on the Trump phenomenon. While not back Trump directly, he's been extremely critical of the GOPe.
In one article about the papal edict laid down by NR, he noticed how many times everything started with "Ronald Reagan..." "When Ronald Reagan..."Back when Ronald Reagan..." and was pretty scathing about it. Said something like "That was 30 years ago what else you got?" And it's true. Ronald Reagan is dead and this is not 1980s America. That America is gone. We have to work with what's left (sadly). Posted by: Dack Thrombosis at January 29, 2016 11:51 AM (4ErVI) 555

I think it boils down to expectations, redbanzai.
I prefer living in a culture that at least expects people to act with integrity, knowing full well that these expectations will not always be met vs. living in a culture in which cynicism reigns, and the expectation is that of course everyone is doing it so just accept it. People, in general, respond to expectations, and things only get worse when you don't expect basic professionalism and integrity. Posted by: Lizzy at January 29, 2016 11:53 AM (NOIQH) 564

As much as I've argued against Trump I think the election is over, if he wins both Iowa and New Hampshire. He is in the lead pretty much every where, it was a brilliant move skipping last nights debate, and his entire political future now hangs on the stupid caucus process. If he gets voters to turn out and wins in Iowa, where will he lose? He will walk to the nomination and Hillary probably won't survive March politically, so Trump could win 35 states and walk into the White House.

So pray for my neighbor. He is having nasty neighbor problems. He and his wife have six kids and they play around the neighborhood as kids do. One of the other neighbor kids(I will call her Snowflake) regularly played with one of my friend's kids, until a few days ago when Snowflake pushed this kid down and hit him or something. My neighbor sent Snowflake home and said she couldn't come over any more. Well, Snowflake's mother called up Child Protective Services anonymously and sicced some case worker on my neighbor, saying their house is messy and unfit to live in (after a blizzard with no trash collection and six kids snowed in for a week), and said my neighbors are neglectful. Now there's a case worker prowling around trying to catch them and get into the house, talk to the kids, etc etc. Meanwhile, one of the neighbor's OTHER kids is in the hospital with some kind of blood infection, so they are dealing with both CPS and a rather serious medical thing. He lawyered up, thank goodness, but I can't cotton to any piece of shit person who would call in CPS as part of some weird neighbor warfare. Christ. Posted by: Nip Sip at January 29, 2016 12:06 PM (jJRIy) Simon Black points out that people get pissed about bank fees but in reality there should be a fee assessed for a quality bank, and that a good quality service will sell even with a fee, because you're receiving a benefit that's worth the money to you. Assuming there are competitors that will keep said service-provider honest, of course. However, that bank would need to actually be a responsible steward of your money and your financial interests. You should have a reasonable expectation you'll receive a fair return on your savings, and that they won't lend your money out and lose it all, and that you can access your money without needing to justify yourself and provide advance notice and have a form documenting your activities submitted to the government. Since none of that holds, those fees piss people off. Who cares if Trump assesses a carry cost for money he raises for charity? That's acceptable as long as it's justified and not excessive. Some people have faith in that, and some do not. Until we see further proof of right conduct from the man, both sides are speculating. The Trump backers I can see are honest about that. Are you? I don't see anything terrible there. Murphy's oil soap works to clean up stock - DO NOT USE BOILED LINSEED OIL! - or any other stock finish, for that matter, at least for now. For the metal a of WD-40 on a rag, or possibly some very fine steel wool with WD-40 to get the surface rust off. Follow with a proper preservative oil. No to scotchbrite on antique firearms. Clean up greasy crud first--old cosmolene, hardened gun oils, etc. with a good degreaser such as odorless mineral spirits. Then for rust, what you need is 0000 steel wool and light machine oil. Apply oil, let it set a few moments, then gently scrub with the steel wool. Repeat as necessary. Kroil is one of the best, yet stinky, rust removal oils--avoid WD 40. What happens is the oil penetrates and loosens the rust and dirt scale and the oil carries these particles away so you do not scratch the surface such as bluing or browning.
For special products, Blue Wonder is one of the best products which can be safely used without removing bluing. Just follow the directions. Last and not least, use boiling hot water to clean your black powder gun barrels--there is a reason that the barrel and nipple are easy to remove from the stock. Make sure to throughly clean the nipple if it is percussion based. The boiling hot water dries much quicker than if you use cold water which can cause rust if all is not removed. Use your favorite protectant afterwards--Boeshield and the like or even a grease such as Rig. Don't like to keep black powder around as it is explosive. Given that I reload and have other flammables that could be catch fire, eliminating storing black powder is one thing that I can do. As above, I agree that pyrodex is pretty nasty stuff. I use Triple 7 instead and have used White Hots with the new inline stuff. Still have to clean as above but less smoke, less crud buildup, and good accuracy. Going to a commercial range with blackpowder on a busy day is a good way to get kicked out and the cleaning there is field expedient methods. Stay safe.
