This is a reverse blog post. Update: They say it was fighter jets breaking the sound barrier but the local Air Force bases say they're not doing any exercises. With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter....."

"Fun Fact: Sonic booms from a plane or rocket are usually singular. But
the Space Shuttle had a distinctive 'double boom' that was easy to distinguish." Some of the purported Aurora overflights in SoCal had a noise footprint similar to a Shuttle arriving at Edwards AFB, including the double boom. I have an acquaintance who was at Caltech in Pasadena and heard it, at a time when there actually was a Shuttle mission ongoing, and he assumed at first it must have been an emergency de-orbit into Edwards. Whatever it was which was making those sounds seems to have been mothballed, or crashed, because they haven't been observed in a while now. When I was a kid, my Dad was stationed at Edwards AFB for a few years. We had at least 5 sonic booms a day. So many and so loud they didn't grout the window panes so they could move back and forth. They also had a rocket engine test pad that when in use, shook the ground and lit up the sky at night for miles. My Grandmother came for a visit, and we didn't even hear the sonic boom (used to them) that sent her screaming into the back yard yelling about an earthquake.

As I posted up above, I was there when those odd booms happened, and Cal Tech said to check with the AF, as it was obviously a plane coming down from orbit. Thus started the rumors of the Aurora space plane. Interesting enough, I think it was Aviation Week and Space Technology magazine that came out and said the program did indeed exist, but only one plane was ever flown and the project wound up being cancelled. I think they're caused by Russian recon planes. NORAD has been told by the regime to shut up.

But to be a Russian jet the question I don't know is how far away a sonic boom can be felt and heard. Normally if Russian jets (not observation planes) were found this close it would lead to maneuvers.

228 - Yeah, I grew up near Beale. Lots of booms when I was younger. And spooling up/testing the SR engines would rattle our windows -- about 20 miles away.

Assuming that everyone is telling the truth, just because the Air Force is not running any exercises does not tell us what the Navy is up to.
Then we have the more interesting possibility of some foreign nation buzzing the Jersey shore, cracking the sound barrier just to stir up some shit while our trusted government officials deny it is happening just like the European officials tried to deny the New Year's Eve unpleasantness. Or it might just be meteorites. Posted by: obnoxious ahole at January 28, 2016 04:47 PM (MpvuV) 260
The SR-71 can also do the double boom.
Back in I think '88, they decided to do the last flight of that plane to set the air-speed record. CNN was covering it. The plane circled for a whole over the Pacific, then took off over L.A. headed towards the east coast. Yep, double boom at my place. And if IIRC, it crossed over DC an hour and 9 minutes later. From Brian Schul's memoir:
"I was piloting the SR-71 spy plane, the world's fastest jet, accompanied by Maj. Walter Watson, the aircraft's reconnaissance systems officer (RSO). We had crossed into Libya and were approaching our final turn over the bleak desert landscape when Walter informed me that he was receiving missile launch signals. I quickly increased our speed, calculating the time it would take for the weapons-most likely SA-2 and SA-4 surface-to-air missiles capable of Mach 5-to reach our altitude. I estimated that we could beat the rocket-powered missiles to the turn and stayed our course, betting our lives on the plane's performance. After several agonizingly long seconds, we made the turn and blasted toward the Mediterranean. 'You might want to pull it back,' Walter suggested. It was then that I noticed I still had the throttles full forward. The plane was flying a mile every 1.6 seconds, well above our Mach 3.2 limit. It was the fastest we would ever fly. I pulled the throttles to idle just south of Sicily, but we still overran the refueling tanker awaiting us over Gibraltar." Posted by: An Poc Ar Buile at January 28, 2016 04:57 PM (bpn7O) 266

It's the scramjet technology used in the high-velocity penetrating weapon (HVPW), the hypersonic bunker buster that Israel built to destroy the Iranian nuclear facilities. Obviously Israel has shared it with us.
The Israeli air force says that the bunker buster weighs a ton, but video coming out of Syria shows that the Arab League has smaller versions. By the way, Israel says that the plan is to topple the mullahs in four days using the HVPW. The Syrian Democratic Forces (QSD) took Tishreen Dam on December 26, 2015. There's video of a missile strike preceded by a sonic boom. This missile made a hole about the size of a tea saucer, but every window in the dam powerhouse was broken. Ceilings fell too, but there's no fragmentation damage anywhere. Theoretically, the missile is capable of going Mach 25 (19,000 MPH), so it uses kinetic energy in addition to the thermobaric warhead to produce the most powerful shock wave of any weapon ever built. There's a Syrian Arab Coalition that forms part of the QSD, but this is a front for Arab League special operators. All media is kept 10 km away from the Syrian Arab Coalition, and the Kurdish reporters embedded with it send out video with the combat sequences edited out. Still, you can see from some clips that they're using hypersonic air-to-ground missiles. The sonic booms are caught on video, and the explosions are incredibly violent. Aviation Group 18 of the UAE Special Operations Command uses a turboprop counterinsurgency two seater called the IOMAX Archangel. It fires precision-guided munitions. In some of the QSD videos you can hear a turboprop overhead. So now WE'RE testing the Israeli-Arab HVPW. It was built by Israel with Arab funding. Look up video of the explosion at Faj Attan, Yemen, on April 20, 2015. That was the first combat use of the HVPW. April 20 is Hitler's birthday. Israel was sending a message. We had them on Tues here in Charleston. At least the earthquake website is showing the sonic boom there in your neck of the woods. Charleston Radar picked up chaff near the coast, and AF confirmed jets off the coast. Reindeer games have stepped up quite a bit. I live close to the AFB and the planes never stopped for the last two days.

64 Seneca guns. We had loud unexplained booms in Dec. '14 in Ohio and that seemed to be the only explanation.
Posted by: Bud Norton at January 28, 2016 04:10 PM (6cOMd) The Seneca Guns have been recorded since 1850, and they are heard quite frequently on the Outer Banks. The residents of the Outer Banks say they have been hearing them since the 40's, so it probably isn't the Navy testing anything. But of course, when it affects the NY-NJ-DC-MA area, it always becomes national news.
