18 Sorry guys, this primary, and the passion of people following it is really starting to get to me. I've got enough going on in my life that I don't need to get into fights on a daily basis about politics. Places like this and twitter used to be outlets for me to enjoy myself and they've become considerably less fun in the last few months. I'm sure things will change once we have a candidate or at the very least it's down to two or three options.

Former Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.), under fire from Republicans on national security, is getting a boost from ex-Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. The former Pentagon chief donated $1,000 to Feingold's campaign. Feingold is challenging Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.).

Asked about the donation, Hagel, who previously served as a Republican senator from Nebraska, touted their work together in the Senate. "[I've] worked with him on many issues. I believe that the Senate needs more senators like Senator Feingold who [will] work across party lines to help govern our country," the former Defense secretary said in a statement to The Hill.

114 Having finally read a good portion of the comments on the morning thread, there were a lot of calls of RINO thrown about.

I don't think that RINO means what y'all think it means.

The Republican party has NEVER been a conservative (for whatever value that term holds anymore) party. Its first president, Lincoln, presided as if he never heard of this quaint document called the Constitution.

Almost every Republican administration saw the expansion of the federal leviathan. Some more than others.

Reagan was an anomaly. Has there been any other Republican president who was actually "conservative-ish"?

So when we look at folks like Perino, Gutfeld, Rubio, Jeb, etc., ad nauseam, are they somehow behaving in ways that are contrary to what the Republican party is all about?

Or are we the ones who do not match the Republican ideals and behavior? Are we REALLY Republicans, or is that just the only option we believe we can go to?

So who are the real RINOS here?

I would say it is us. Or at least those of us who still have that R on their voter registration.

It was intended as a "living memorial" as were many around the country after WWI (college memorial union bldgs., memorial fields, etc.)

From the NPS site:

"The names of the men and women from the District of Columbia who gave their lives in the World War are here inscribed as a perpetual record of their patriotic service to their country.

A circular, open-air, Doric structure built almost entirely of Vermont marble, the memorial has an overall height of 47 feet and a diameter of 44 feet, large enough to accommodate the entire U.S. Marine Band. It was intended that the structure be a memorial and a bandstand and that each concert would be a tribute to those who served and sacrificed in the war."

Yep. And the continual ki-yiing about the death of President Kennedy - it would be like expecting Kent State protesters to go into mourning for the Archduke Franz Ferdinand once a year. Hollywood is particularly bad for this frozen in amber attitude. I saw a cartoon the other day, with a parody of Gloria Swanson's "I'm ready for my closeup, Mr. DeMille" line in 'Sunset Boulevard'. And I thought, "How many kids, teenagers, young adults watching this have ever SEEN "SB"? Baldur von Schirach mentioned before rush hour in the west. The HQ is a pretty heavy duty place. All I know about Schirach is Goebbels and Hitler hated his cultural work in Vienna, the scrawny little sycophant because he wanted to make Berlin, where he was Gauleiter, the Reich cultural capital, and the deranged mustached one because of his abiding bitterness at his own artistic failure in the Austrian capital.

But Ben - "I'm sure things will change once we have a candidate or at the very least it's down to two or three options".

Hmm. Aren't the food fights here now about, essentially, two or three options? It's not the Huckabee fanatics and the Yeb! loyalists who are going at it. Pretty much you-know-who vs. Cruz and the other Cuban, though that last one barely gets mentioned (not sure if that's because he's such a farcical figure, or anyone to whom he, inexplicably, appeals is too hesitant to mention it).

I do like the WWII monument. A matter of preference.

Given the specific location selected for the memorial, I think the designer did an excellent job. The monument is partially sunken so as to not impact sight lines down the mall. The pool within conforms well to the original plan for that portion of the Mall area generated by the McMillan Plan.

174 We have spent 2 generation now telling every boy in public school 'you will be suspended for fighting back, even when the other guy throws the first punch'.

This Programming is insidious, and stops NATURAL reactions from taking place.

It also rewards aggression in particularly warped way and penalizes self-defense.

This is yet another issue that isn't being addressed by any of the candidates that I know of. I'd think they'd get a boost by recommending that schools mirror the law and stop criminalizing self-defense.

Gun sellers say that most customers want a pistol that can fit easily into a handbag or a small drawer in the night table. 'People no longer feel safe, otherwise they would not be buying so many products here,' says a seller in North-Rhine Westphalia.

For the last few weeks he has been selling - like many of his colleagues - an average of three times as many alarm, gas, and signal guns as he was prior to the attacks that took place in Cologne on New Year's Eve. The attacks, which targeted women, made international headlines and raised concerns about refugees among large segments of German society.

Tomorrow, he had his mind on a gun that was in his collection in AZ.

I happen to think that what those guys were doing in Oregon was approaching pointless, but they were occupying a nothing building in the middle of nowhere.

The occupy movement and the movement that took over the capital building in Minnesota and the movement that destroyed Furgeson and the movement that destroyed Baltimore were all left wing movements that killed actual people, raped actual women and destroyed actual property - buttloads of it.

Yet the tiny group of right wing protesters MUST BE STOPPED! And a guy - family guy - gets shot in the face for it.

202 Red Eye is better with Tom Shillue imo. He is quick and funny, draws out his guests and plays along. Gutfeld was doing two shows and he never seemed prepared for either. He'd throw goofy stuff in at random, which sorta worked, but Tom has been good, and strikes me as more "conservative".

Then Gutfeld yesterday was ranting about Trump's guy threatening Megyn, and how any journalist must take this seriously and denounce him or something. It was so over the top I couldn't tell if it was just his schtick.

FOX had said Trump's guy was threatening saying something like "I wouldn't want Megyn to have to go through that again". Whatever it was (again), it happened before so was not a physical threat. I think he meant the regular attacks from Megyn's show ("cut his balls off" style attacks from her field of Trump haters) ... would be responded to by Trump "counterpunching", calling her lightweight or bimbo or whatever.

But it sounded like little Greg was trying to be Megyn's protector, beating his little chest. And that's the thing at FOX, they are sometimes their own family/mob. On Trump they've had a divide, but none from Trump's side are moderators. Megyn did had Giuliani on saying he liked Trump much better than Cruz (too strident and too far right to win or govern effectively), but then Giuliani declared his love for Ailes and said Megyn's question was fair, and they had a moment. ha

I know, it's just the typical response from Obama re: spread of new and previously rare (in the US) diseases.

If it were just the Zika virus it would be no big deal (though reports of possible sexual transmission are not good). However, it's TB, whooping cough, mumps, EV-68 w/polio-like paralysis (haven't heard *anything* about that lately, huh?). They've been recklessly escorting unaccompanied foreign minors from our southern border to every state, and then insisting public schools enroll them without the required ID and vaccination records. Just like refusing to stop people from Ebola-infected regions, they are helping spread diseases instead of preventing them. And all they think to do is focus on messaging so we rubes don't notice what they're up to.

But the woman was not satisfied. Mean things were said, and it did not end well.

207 Sean Trende has an interesting piece up at RealClearPolitics. He repeats his point that Romney lost big because working class whites failed to turn out for him. Trump solves that problem, obviously. Trende goes on to say that Romney also lost because minority turnout was so large that, even had whites turned out at traditional levels, he would still have lost.

For that reason Obama will be forced to campaign hard for Hillary and/or Bernie both. Getting African Americans to turnout is going to be impossible for those old useless socialists to do on their own. Latinos as well. If all those demographic groups don't turn out at the same historic levels, and working class whites are finally motivated to vote, the Democrats lose on demographics. Then, there is the failure of Progressive policy to consider: lots of minority voters in my town are outspoken in their hate for all Democrats now, after the last seven years of FAIL.

Progressives are appealing to a smaller and smaller base as the months go by without any economic progress.

I think this could be a yuuuuggge victory this year for the forces of good. We just have to keep Rubio, Christie, Bush, and the other dwarves away from the top of the ticket.

212 On Wednesday, Jan. 27 a large Hizballah force entered the southern Syrian town of Daraa, a critically dangerous event for Israels security. The way to the town, which lies near the Jordanian border and across from the Israeli Golan, was opened before Hizballah by none other than Russian forces. This was a blatant violation of President Vladimir Putins commitments to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Jordanian King Abdullah not to permit Iranian and Iran-backed forces, such as Hizballah and Iraqi and Afghani Shiite militias, reach their borders in consequence of Russias military intervention in the Syria war.
Daraa is just 32 km from the southern Golan and 12 km from the Jordanian border. Hizballah forces in this town are therefore within easy striking distance from northern Israeli and Jordan.

Thanks Fredo

Diogenes, Medved has had throat cancer - his appearance might be related to his fight against that. Since he's back on the air I'm hoping that means he's winning his battle, but I don't know. Wish him complete and rapid victory on that front.

On content, he's 80% miss, 20% hit (or was when I used to hear him on the radio, which I've stopped doing). Sensible on random things like the idiocy and financial unsustainability of most fashionable public transport (like "light rail"), and the disaster of expanding, intrusive, comprehensive welfare-ism (e.g. the disastrous explosion in "nutrition" programs that has turned schools into feeding centers for an already welfare-afflicted class of dependent families).

But his overall political "principles" seem to be no more than not agreeing with something that the dumbest, most clueless NPR listener in his social circle might find offensive or "unsophisticated". Positively delusional on mass illegal migration, both substantively and politically. And his somewhat risky (for radio) sarcasm becomes incredibly arrogant and off-putting when he is showing his a** on important topics.

Think he started as a culture/movie critic, where he's probably pretty good.

And that is because History is no longer taught in any rational form in junior high or high school anymore. The entire history curriculum consists of all the racists and oppressive things that America has done to others. Everything from killing all the Indians and bringing them diseases and tobacco, etc. to slavery to the KKK hanging blacks in the south, etc.

Just yesterday someone posted that Amherst college is going to remove their mascot, Lord Jeff, who I believe was a founder of the college. He dared write, at one point in the 1700s, that his band of settlers, etc. who were pretty much defenseless against the natives, should give the natives smallpox blankets and kill them off before they were all captured, tortured and killed by them.

He is now the most evil man ever.
Of course, no one talks about the natives who often killed their opponents in the most horrible way ever.

242 Just yesterday someone posted that Amherst college is going to remove their mascot, Lord Jeff, who I believe was a founder of the college.

Yeah, I just read an NYT piece about this.

Side note: No. 2 Son's best friend started at Amherst in the Fall. He found that it had no standards at all, there were no expectations of the students, there was no structure to anything.

Instead of finding the liesure delightful he dropped out and is looking for an art school. It drove him nuts to have nothing expected of him.

I have used this in conversation with a ginger who laments everything about "kids these days". Some of the kids are alright.

246 233 Sad thing... quietman... I was having beers with two guys my age, 50+.. mentioning some of the same points like you mentioned... and they might as well have been 20. They literally had no idea about political history . All they know is ESPN, fantasy football, etc. They can go into extreme details about all things sports or stupid movie trivia, but what they don't know was dumbfounding to me... They didn't know LBJ was a democrat.. or that he and JFK were the ones that ran the Viet Nam war... they both said it was Nixon and the Republicans! Many more examples... it was depressing.

We need to create easily digestible numerical scores, like a batter's slashline, based on money, voting, and affiliations, and create a political climate where your average American expects performance from their representatives the same way they expect performance from their sports teams.

With the same lusty calls for firings of incompetents and those who fail to meet their goals as you get for a head coach after a 6-10 season.

Yip, your tale could be told by all or most of us, I'd guess.

But, as with so many other things, it's impossible to know how today compares to earlier times.

Back when, for example,a now thoroughly degraded and (politically) idiotic, lifeless place like CA would do things like ban welfare for illegals and abolish "bilingual" education (both by ballot initiative), were normal people more politically aware and sensible as well as smarter about public policy? This was just 30 years ago or less.

No, throwing crap in their face repeatedly and them coming back for more is not "presidential". Do we want the president to have to campaign by facing illegal sad stories ... the "why do you hate these dear children that just want to live the American dream?"

It is FOX pushing the globalist propaganda crap, when they should have (murdered by illegal) Kate's family on, or all the families harmed by the illegal trafficking, or the Disney workers pushed out and forced to train their H1B replacements. Being submissive to that BS is not leadership.

Cruz says it's a job interview ... nope. Megyn is not doing the hiring, and loving the illegals is not a job requirement. Trump is winning by bypassing the media control of the process of citizens making their choice. Cruz Rubio will play, as they love the FOX help at bringing down Trump.

Of course I wish he'd take no hiatus, and he's free to do anything, but it didn't make sense the way he originally stated it. It's already down to 2 or 3 contenders, or at least it looks that way. It affects our lives every day, from the gas pump, to taxes that we pay, to inflation on the groceries we buy. People may finally feel the effects of what they voted for, but will be too stupid still the figure out the cause.

No, the debate is supposedly to help GOP voters decide which candidate to vote for, not a chance to show they can also to appeal to Lefty media hacks and internet activists.
They don't need yet another opportunity to defend their stands on the issues, they need to tell us why their policy ideas on immigration, terrorism, etc. would be more effective than the other ***GOP***candidates.

Well, as you know, there is no 'One size fits all'. If I had to buy a single, practical rifle, and since I don't live in Alaska, I would be inclined towards a .243.

Shooting ground squirrels or rabbits with a .243 is overkill by a fair margin, but it's not insane. Hunting whitetails with the same is certainly not unreasonable at decent ranges. So, a good compromise. Quite a step up from a .17 though.

If it's only for vermin, it would be hard to go wrong with any of the bolt action .223's.
