Federalist "Donald Trump is not the solution to GOP incompetence."

The premise right there is wrong. The GOP-e is not incompetent. The GOP-e is collaborationist in the 100 year Fabian Socialist counterrevolution.

Whether Trump or anyone can do anything about that is the big question. And considering the state of the nation and the beast destroying it, I have my doubts.

Over at HotAir, the unfortunate looking* Taylor Millard opines:

An immediate GOP purge won't work

Its going to take years to convince the electorate to put a true majority of smaller government advocates into power. So its more important for conservatives and libertarians to play the long game (the very long game) to see their plans come to fruition.

It means not chasing every new populist bauble or figure who comes along promising to bring about change or fixing a country with even more big government. It also means resisting the urge to immediately throw someone out when they vote the way we dont want them too....

I don't think anyone who has been steeped and marinated in liberalism their whole lives is altogether sane. And I don't say that as hyperbole. The advancement of his ideology requires a constant hatred, a constant victim, a constant inability to put forth facts (outcomes) over emotion. It simply isn't healthy. And as far as negotiations with Paul Ryan on "solving" immigration...when Ryan's vantage point is very close to Obama's, I'm not expecting anything less than a complete sellout.

True, you do need a party that has the integrity, political will and power to do something about that. But that is a herculean task.

79 How Jeb Cleared The Way For Trump

By dismissing Trump out-of-hand for nearly a year.

There, I saved them a whole lot of pixels.

Seriously, this isn't hard. Had the DOPe realized how pissed off voters were, they would have nuked Jeb before Trump even entered the race. A race without Jeb (where the "squish" is Marco Rubio- who, don't get me wrong, is also unacceptable to me) is a race where Teh Donald can't get nearly the same traction. If they had gone even farther and actively supported someone like Scott Walker, then everyone (including the DOPe consultant class) would be much happier right now.

They didn't. They assumed that Trump would implode or be completely unacceptable, and therefore a laughing stock. Well... good luck with that.

82 Seriously, I can respect folks being wary of Trump, I'm kinda getting more and more leary of his stands and stances myself. Trouble is, some of the reactions I'm seeing also serve as prime examples of how Trump got where he is to begin with.

There is a divide within the anti-Left (I can barely call it "Right" anymore). Someone was going to capitalize eventually and it wound up being Trump. If you want to stop Trump, first recognize and understand why he's been able to do what he's done. There's some pretty legit issues driving people there and nobody else has been bothering to address them.

Or yeah, just continue to insult and condescend. I'm sure they'll turn out in droves for you then.

Baka.

Depends on your definition of "solution." What a bunch of Conservatives who I greatly respect don't seem to get is this: if the point is destroying the Republican Party (which, for me it is), that requires that the WHOLE Republican Party be destroyed. What rises up after is going to have to be something new, it can't just be the Republican Party with the serial numbers filed off.

And I'm sure folks are attributing other views he hasn't actually expressed, seeing him as a "blank slate". If that sounds familiar, it should.

Had the GOP shown any interest in those issues through their actions I don't think folks would be looking at Trump they way they do. This is a self-inflicted injury for the GOP, pure and simple.

Bull crap. That means if you don't like what's being offered, you just get no voice. Well, surprise! We who are angry *do* get a voice, and we're f*cking pissed at 10+ years of betrayals by the Republican Party.

Electing Democrats (or allowing them to be elected) doesn't work, because (not completely irrationally) Republicans reason "well, do what the winners are doing." So many of us - myself included - are attempting a new strategy: burn it the f*ck down. Maybe *then* what remains of the erstwhile Republican Party can be salvaged into something new which is actually Conservative/Libertarian.

That's how the process works - you get your vote for your reasons, and I get my vote for my reasons, and the one of us who can convince more people wins.

Would I rather the world be such that I could be supporting Cruz? Yep. But that world isn't this world. In this world, supporting Cruz is supporting the Uni-Party which is attempting to turn me into a serf forced to pay the local lord for the privilege of milling my own grain.

F*ck. That.

Trump is a highly volatile, very risky to use concoction. Unfortunately, for those of us who would like actual representation, he's about the only option left (and not because he'll represent us; I have no illusions that he'll make a good, or even adequate, President).

We know their polling is the best money can buy. Not 100% accurate - but the best they can get. And if we connect the obvious dots that ain't really all that far apart - their polling must show Trump winning the nom, and I'm guessing Cruz second. The two guys the GOP likes least.

Hence the last ditch efforts to "reason" with the unruly base.

and I don't mean *crappy* like "8-hour shift at Starbuck's" crappy. I mean crappy like "12-hour shift in dirty factory for 7 days a week making pittance wages".

putting up tariffs and protectionist measures just so we can keep crappy jobs, *at the expense of* (opportunity cost) making better jobs here, is just stupid. and Trump *KNOWS* this, being the financial guy that he is, but he is just playing to the crowd. yet another illustration of how unprincipled and venal he is.

152 When someone like Kevin Williams 'speaks' to me in latin, he isn't 'speaking' to me. He's writing to his peers; the well educated, branded, established voices whose opinions are given greater credibility than the opinions of mere ordinary citizens.

When the cloistered, well educated argue among themselves, ordinary people suddenly discover there is laboring to be done; in the fields and factories, product has to be delivered, bills to pay.

And when the ordinary people say to the well educated, established, and successful voices of reason, "Hey, ya wanna give me a hand here with this wagon load of potatoes?"

Well, who needs the well educated, established voices of reason when potatoes need to be dug?

Is it more valid to lie about something to achieve a political goal, or lie about something to achieve a personal goal?

There seems to be a lot of stupid sloshed around today. I see a lot of people are out to get vengeance any way they can get it, but I wonder if can be justified for any reason other than "I want"

And a further rhetorical question: once you have gotten your vengeance, what will it have done for you?
If you burn everything down, what will support you?

(a) Lyin' Ryan said, with a straight face, that his GOP caucus is determined to confront and roll back Obama's overreaching executive orders. This after the very same Lyin' Ryan used the omnibus budget bill to fully fund every one of Obama's EOs through fiscal year 2018.

(b) Former SECDEF Bob Gates said, with a straight face, that it's bad to have Presidents who surround themselves with "yes men". This from Gates, who while serving under Obama was one of the most sycophantic yes men ever to have been seen in D.C., who faithfully implemented Obama's catastrophically stupid Iraq and Afghanistan policies.

(c) The official North Korean state news agency said, with a straight face, that America has no grounds to criticize Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program, because of the USA's "numerous and humongous" nuclear warhead inventory. Yes, the Norks used the English word "humongous" in a government press release.

You do know that Boehner did this on his way out the door, right? It was part of his "cleaning the stables" effort to give Ryan a clean slate.

Boehner was all about the omnibus plan instead of individual spending bills and by the time he decided to leave the stage there was no way to do individual bills last year.

It was interesting. He said he'd spent a lot of time with Cruz in the last 60 days, that he hadn't really known him when he was Solicitor General and just based his opinions on the charicatures of him in the press.

Odd that the two biggest politicians in TX didn't really know each other.

Refreshingly honest of Perry, I thought.

That RINO shill Mark Meadows, the guy who filed the bill to remove Boehner, disagrees.

http://tinyurl.com/gu34xck

It was too late to do individual spending bills before the end of the year once Ryan took over. That's not shilling, just a fact. So there was either Boehner's omnibus or no bill at all. Omnibus bills don't allow you to do the kind of surgical spending cuts on individual bills that most want. You have to do a take it or leave it approach on everything and it is difficult if not impossible to get concessions.

The problem where we are with politics today is there is so much anger and mistrust, deserved, that we get solutions like Donald Trump and people who should know how the appropriations process actually works become shills and RINOs for pointing out facts.

I use three Chrome extensions: Adblock+, Privacy Badger, and Disconnect. They may have some overlapping functions, but together they stop 99% of the crap and tracking bugs, and things load fast. The only thing I have problems with are these slide-in ads that get triggered after a few seconds, like on the Weekly Standard. Sometimes they will disable a page feature you want - for example, I don't have any text formatting options when commenting here, and on some sites videos won't play - but with enough fiddling you can customize for each page. This may be more trouble than you want to deal with, but it keeps the ads, malware, etc. away for me.

301 So we have a candidate, after the SB shootings, that says we need to have a temporary halt to immigration. That seems sensible to a lot of people. It's clear that we did not see that couple as a threat. So, do the other candidates agree it's a good idea? Well, no. They tie themselves in knots, calling people racists for thinking such a thing. Even conservative Ted Cruz can't say it's a good idea. We have to let more people in on HB-1 visas.

Why is this hard for the GOPe to understand? People, thinking people, want a halt to immigration, before we get into the mess Europe is in.

Couldn't agree more. But facts actually do matter.

The Speaker sets the House agenda and when he chooses to go the omnibus route instead of doing individual appropriations bills it changes the dynamic of what is possible in the budget process.

It doesn't matter what Ryan did or didn't do last year as far as being Speaker. The cake was baked. He has said and done some things that give me pause but I want to see if he actually keeps to his promise to do individual spending bills and take input from the committees, the exact opposite process from Boehner. And that more than anything was what caused the revolt in the House and cost Boehner his job.

Hopefully, Ryan keeps his word.

390 Remember that Trump is an admirer of General George S. Patton, and he is approaching the campaign as if it was a war. Williamson may prefer Trump be gentle and PC, but that isn't the way he does things. He can make peace later after the enemy has been defeated.

His approach attracts a lot of people who finally see a champion who will fight for them. And if my own attitude is representative, nothing is going to change our minds about going all out to support him - unless he betrays us, and then we stay home and let it burn.

Yea, the do. But you do understand that it is January of 2016 right?

Google for yourself. Ryan has been on record consistently trashing the omnibus process which meant a handful of people would negotiate everything and individual committees did squat and promising that he would reverse the process and give the individual committees the ability to put forth their own spending bills. This is the process he is starting for all new spending.

The omnibus process is what pissed off guys in the Freedom Caucus and ultimately caused the revolt against Boehner. The House was essentially being run by a handful of Boehner cronies and individual members claimed they were not being heard or their wishes acted on.

The Freedom Caucus supported Ryan and his commitment to regular order. In fact, that is why they supported him. If it's good enough for the most conservative members of the House I'm willing to wait and see if Ryan fully implements what he promised to do.

Not necessarily. You forget that Boehner ran the House in such a way that he did consult his committee chairs as much as he should. In fact, Dr. Price did not have much of a say in last year's budget deal (Boehner's final act as Speaker), and he was/is the House Budget Committee chairman.

Moving on: Trump is pro-bailouts by the Federal government of private business. Trump is hugely pro-Federal Reserve and all actions the Fed has taken under Obama. Trump is pro-ObamaCare and just last week announced on Fox that he wants to expand the program (though he is coming out soon with a formal policy proposal). Trump is pro-EPA, pro-Eminent Domain, pro-Omnibus spending bills....

It is difficult to find a policy area where Trump and the GOPe disagree, other than on immigration and border security. In fact, it's kind of hard to find any areas of disagreement, other than immigration, that Trump has with Democrats.

474 Things I have learned this thread:

The Weeping Boner passed everything he wanted through the House all with nothing but his lonesome, single vote (and dems).

The Weeping Boner was re-elected twice by the douchebags in the Vichy GOP House but they bear no responsibility for anything the Weeping Boner did all by his lonesome - and that includes Paul Ryan, who had nothing to do with anything. Evidently, Paul Ryan was beaten and tortured into voting for the Weeping Boner and being part of his leadershit team ... but he never had a hand on anything.

Paul Ryan had no say in what the Weeping Boner did for him (giving it to America up the poop-chute) right before he stepped down from the Weepership. Ryan had no input into that, at all. Nothing. The Weeping Boner was going to give Ryan a gift on his way out, whether Ryan wanted it or not. ANd Ryan voted for that gift because he was beaten and tortured into it.

Have I got that all correct?

WHO pointed out that since people in the region had not been exposed to Zika before it emerged in Brazil last May they lacked immunity, allowing the virus to spread quickly.

503 It's become increasingly clear to me that "conservative" is a badge of honor for those who have already accepted death. I've been a self-styled conservative all my life, and allowed the firm stance I've always taken on academic questions to stand in for actually living with conviction.

We are able to identify problems very well, but I've yet to see anyone articulate a plan for doing something about the decay of marriage and the family, of education, economic liberty, and freedom of speech. It's dire warnings and bitter satire all the way down. I'm stuck between diagnosis and treatment, and have been for my entire life.

Either we still have an ability to affect our nation through the electoral process, or the hour is late indeed. This election matters very much for that reason. It's a test. None of this is about the ideas in play, its about the rules of the game. We need to really put the nation through its paces, not sit down for fear of rocking the boat.

Our dear lettered conservative friends serve a very important purpose: they're the canary in our coal mine. They've gotten the idea we keep them around for their singing. Now they're trying to teach us the tune, and even some dance moves to go with it.

We're a nation of grown men who let newsroom fops tell us what to do. We're a nation of soldiers sitting in a circle indian-style telling the nice trans lady how darling her dress is. We tell our young men that being gay is just as good as being straight, and to masturbate more, and our women they can be men if they want.

So yes, the man calling us back to sanity, to reality, seems rough, uncouth, himself insane.

No the facts are inconvenient for you that's why you wish to deflect.

Our supposed "leaders" have failed on every score, have failed on every test, have failed to even listen to reason and have instead doubled down on capitulation and lies.

And you presume to lecture us that we are unreasoned into our anger?

Why didn't our GOP talking head, editorial writing "betters" recognize the GOPe's sorry state of affairs before Trump?

They facilitated the decay of the Republican Party and are now shocked at what they have wrought!?

We've all seen this for a long time coming, and they suddenly only see it now because of Trump? What kind of fukcing brain trust are they?

Why didn't they recognize the problem and address it a long time ago?

And why do they think that they, a huge part of the present mess, have the moral authority to tell us what is best for us?

It's like mom and dad went out, got drunk and crashed the car into the garage door, and then you get in trouble in the morning for showing them the wreckage.

513 484 Jesus your like a bad broken record, shoveling that shit about passing bills AFTER they gave Fredo everything he wanted AND the money to fund it. Get a new shtick or get lost

The idea that they gave the SCOAMF everything he wanted is a narrative pushed by talk radio and certain "conservative" outlets for their own purposes. I have previously outlined a number of concessions the Republicans won in the omnibus while simultaneously naming the problems that prevented the deal from being better. Furthermore, the idea that a reconciliation bill is meaningless is absolutely wrong. If they could get the votes to override a veto, the bill would be the law of the land. But the SCOAMF was and is not going to sign a bill repealing what he sees as one of his signature achievements. The idea that he would readily cave was disproved with the last shutdown.

526 505 Nice try, you never once complained that Boehner didn't keep his
regular order promise. That isn't "leadership style" that nuts and bolts
of how the House works.

Blaming Boehner for failing to consult his committee chairmen (his "top-down" approach) is complaining about lack of regular order. When the House is run properly, policy flows from the committees, not from leadership. That said, I do feel that McConnell deserves far more blame than he has received, particularly with the last omnibus. When the Senate Democrats derailed the appropriations process once again, he should and could have done more.

And by Boehner we all mean him and his leadership. AFAIK, Ryan never once complained.

Actually, Ryan did complain. Moreover, his actions since becoming Speaker- a commitment to regular order and a "down-up" approach, reforming the Steering Committee, and consulting leaders of the various factions within the Conference - show that he disagrees with Boehner's approach.

Posted by: Miss80sBaby at January 25, 2016 11:53 AM (YjDyJ)

527 >>So I'm taking it as a no your're not going to be listing the GOPe victories and wins then?

Why would I do something as asinine as playing your little game? I never said that I like the job that Republicans have done in Congress the last number of years nor have I bragged about any victories.

I merely pointed out that Boehner had set up a process that led to bad outcomes and was despised by actual conservatives in the House, the omnibus process. Ryan has been a critic of this process and the first thing he did was to decentralize power in the House and return to regular order. This is how real spending reform has a chance of happening.

It's not a guarantee. Never claimed it was. But reform was never going to happen without it and it does have the support of conservatives in the House.

But by all means, tell us how Trump is going to fix everything. That makes complete sense.

Republicans have been electing "true conservatives" to the House and Senate almost exclusively (moderate and liberal Repubs are rare there) since the '90's. True conservatives do not legislate well; they are ineffective. They are good on the 'talking points' in political rags and during campaigns but not so good in action.

534 "The Speaker sets the House agenda and when he chooses to go the omnibus route instead of doing individual appropriations bills it changes the dynamic of what is possible in the budget process."

Except what you term "possible" is more accurately rendered "convenient". Time and time again we have extraordinary awful bills pass, with the excuse given that there's no alternative. Failure theater.

You're the Speaker. You claim you don't want the omnibus passed. Your constituents definitely don't want it passed. Don't pass it. Start over with individual appropriations. I don't give a single fuck how hard that is, who it will inconvenience, how much time it takes, or what people who'd never vote for you are going to say on TV. Don't be afraid of them - be afraid of us.

He's not there to be "articulate". If we wanted "articulate" we'd get KDW on the ticket. Trump is there to help move along the first part of "burn it down/scatter the stones/salt the earth".

Once it's burnt down we can worry about putting it back together again.

Under Boehner, the House regularly passed budgets out of committee but there were always problems with the Senate. My recollection is that, with the exception of Ryan-Murray, all the other budget deals were made by Boehner instead of a budget conference committee.

I no Ryan didn't complain at least not until Boehner was gone.

537 "Tea Party rep: Ryan better to conservatives than Boehner was"

"The relationship with Paul is entirely different than
it was with Speaker Boehner," Mulvaney told host John Catsimatidis on "The Cats Roundtable" on New York's AM-970.

"I don't think Speaker Boehner ever understood the Tea Party movement, I
don't think he really understood what really happened in 2010, and I
don't think he understood that there was this whole wave of members in
Congress who are very different than they had been in the past."

Mulvaney praised Ryan's leadership as much more open to hearing from the caucus and more approachable.

He said that in comparison. Boehner was a "very top-down type of manager manager" and a "twentieth century manager in a twenty-first century world."

The commenter above is correct...

Trump in the race does actually help Cruz....Trump is taking half the media assault.

If Trump wasn't in the race Cruz would be getting all negative attention all the time.

If Trump and Cruz weren't in the race, Rubio would be getting all the negative attention.

If not Rubio, then Bush. If not Bush, then Cristie...

It's ALMOST like the media is the propaganda arm of the democrat party. Almost.

So, we NEED someone that pushes back against the MEDIA propaganda and cuts straight to the heart of the matter. Not one of "our" candidates is perfect...
My opinion is Trump and Cruz do the best at pushing back against media b.s. So I'm fine with either...

I'm NOT fine with the avererage GOPe elected official that speaks in the exact same terms as the left--- where they equate illegal immigration with LEGAL immigration and call anyone that wants a secure border an EXTREMIST. I'm so tired of that b.s. that my rage meter goes off the charts everytime I hear it.
