Overnight Open Thread (23 Jan 2016)

Why the Koch brothers drive liberals nuts. If you aren't progressive, you're part of the "radical right" and "dark money". Whatever that means these days.

Climate Change Irony

Many climate economists reject climate models and turn to ethical judgments.

The irony here is incredible. Americans have been beaten over the head for years about the "settled science" of the peer-reviewed research, and the Obama Administration assembled an Interagency Working Group that has spent years calculating and updating estimates of the "social cost of carbon." We at IER have reported on all of the problems with these models, and cited MIT economist Robert Pindyck's scathing critique. Now guys like Roberts are coming along and effectively saying, "I don't care about the peer-reviewed literature that the IPCC uses, or the models chosen by the Obama Working Group. Let's make policy by conducting a survey to see what the group thinks."

National Security

These guys are merely stating the obvious. If Guccifer accessed her emails, then yes, Iran, Russia, China likely compromised Clinton's server too. If we had an actual press corps and DoJ doing their job, she'd have already withdrawn from the Presidential race and would already be facing charges for her criminal neglect/behavior.

Keanu

The trailer for Key and Peele's first feature movie. Perfect for Caturday.

Government Failure

Europe is gonna be a big mess. German government admits it cannot account for 600,000 of its 1.1 million asylum seekers.

Tomb Of The Unknowns

Tomb Sentinels continue to guard the Tomb of the Unknowns during historic snow storm.

Why Ewoks Are Terrifying

UAV Ban

This will work just as well as gun-free zones if a bad guy really wants to do something nefarious. FAA bans UAVs at the SuperBowl and anywhere within 37 miles of the stadium.

Battleships

I still miss the battleships. Battleships pulled off the biggest ruse of Operation Desert Storm 25 years ago.

Oh, ok. I like the standalone COTW ones, myself over the "grand alien conspiracy" stuff. That was good for the first 4, maybe 5 seasons, then it got kinda tedious and was trying too hard. I'd like a return to form with this, but I'm not holding my breath. I do like that you reckon it's gonna cover a few bases story wise. I'll settle for grand conspiracy, if it's written well and not just more shit made up on the fly that leads to just more dangling loopholes.

Exactly. I got sick of being jerked around by that stuff. Carter was making it up as he went along. Yeah, the supposed reveal would just look silly... then they'd patch that by later going "Psych! The mutant killer bees are actually controlled by the shapeshiting aliens, who are made of the black ooze, which was actually a secret government weapons program" or some such shit. Enough, already.

For me the standalone eps is what made the show... like an updated Kolchak. Stuff like "Jose Chung", "Bad Blood" and "Clyde Bruckman" were some of the finest hours of tv made.

I was doing pretty good. Had only been called a fag once. Then I made the mistake of an open ended question about Cruz. Which morphed into the GOP. Which morphed into Rubio.

Apparently, and I had no idea, it is not at all disqualifying for someone who is running for POTUS to have sponsored a bill which would strip Constitutional rights from individuals. That caught me off guard.

What put me down for the count was the assertion that Cruz' support for the Death Penalty was more egregious a thing than Rubio's sponsorship of CASA.

146
James Thurber had been a code clerk for
the US legation in Paris in 1918, and recalled it in the book The
Beast Inside and Other Animals.
I dug this quote out of a book on
Cryptography, and found a short transcription online because I am an
indifferent typist

All our code books, except one, were
quaint transparencies dating back to the time when Hamilton Fish was
secretary of state under President Grant, and they were intended to
save words and cut telegraph costs, not to fool anybody.

The new code book had been put together
so hastily that the word America was left out, and code groups so
closely paralleled true readings that love, L-O-V-V-E, for example,
was the symbol for love.

Whatever slight illusion of secrecy we
code clerks may have had was dispelled one day by a dour gentleman
who announced that the Germans had all our codes. It was said that
the Germans now and then got messages through to Washington taunting
us about our childish ciphers and suggesting on one occasion that our
clumsy device of combining two codes in a desperate effort at
deception would have been a little harder if we had used two other
codes which they named.

This may have been rumor or legend,
like the story current at the time that six of our code books were
missing and that a seventh, neatly wrapped, firmly tied and
accompanied by a courteous note, had been returned to one or another
of our embassies by the Japanese. Either because they had finished
with it or because they already had one.

A system of deception as easy to see
through as the passing attack of a grammar-school football team
naturally produces a cat's-out-of-the-bag" attitude. In
enciphering messages in one code, in which the symbol for "quote"
was (to make up a group) ZOXIL, we were permitted to use UNZOXIL for
"unquote," an aide to perspicuity that gave us code clerks
the depressing feeling that our tedious work was merely and exercise
in block lettering. The Department may have comforted itself with
the knowledge that even the most ingenious and complex codes could
have been broken down by enemy cipher experts. Unoxilaation just
made it a little easier for them
I do love Thurber, at least when he stuck to writing.

If they had thumbs, they would. Cats don't really like anybody, they just want you to think they do.

Posted by: Old Blue at January 23, 2016 10:13 PM (9iR5/)

My experience has been that cats are smart enough to figure out who they can and cannot trust, and will not "warm up" to anybody who hasn't earned it.

I have two rather large male cats within spitting distance of me as I type. They adore me. Could probably kill me in my sleep if they wanted to, but seem to prefer waking me up at night to tell me how much they miss me not joining in their nighttime shenanigans.

183 I saw something recently, a "top 10" stand-alone
episodes thing, and most of them were earlier seasons. All fun (and/or
creepy as all get out), making me want to see them again... but I don't
think I want to wade through the seasons.

Or maybe I should, one of these days.

I always compare this show to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I don't
care what anyone else thinks, I consider Buffy the greatest television
show of all time. I've run through the entire series more than a few
times.

Posted by: BurtTC at January 23, 2016 10:37 PM

Yep. Fun, funny and/or creepy was what worked for me. The writing was top notch. They were movie length stories compressed into 42 minutes. No padding. Seasons 1 to 3 were probably more consistent, as the grand conspiracy stuff is still intriguing... however most of my fave standalones come from 4 to 6... they really hit their stride then, as the writing combined with some really movie standard directing... "Jose Chung", "Bad Blood", "Clyde Bruckman", "Small Potatoes", "Detour"... there's a whole swag of them.

I was scrolling through the video game reviewer Angry Joe's page and he had an older post discussing Suicide Squad with an interesting fan theory on the Joker. Probably not true but could be interesting if it was. Its not really the Joker. But instead it is someone that was driven insane by the Joker. Tortured and beaten by him. Someone once very close to Batman allowing a very interesting dynamic between them and also explaining the age gap between Batfleck and this younger Joker. Jason Todd.

Ok, so we both agree, the German government is following a strategy.

As to underlying motivations, I don't get it either. This suicidal shit. This betrayal of German women BY German women like Merkel and Reker. It doesn't make any sense, no matter what theory you posit: economics, holocaust guilt, multicultural hard on. I think maybe liberals are just retarded in certain areas, maybe they are motivated by all three and they are simply too stupid go think things through. I've wasted enough angst on them. Fuck them. They want this shit, let them have it anf kill themselves by it.

It's like watching a consensual BDSM snuff film. Germany wants to die painfully, and Muslims want to fill the corresponding fole. Unpleasant, but let them have at it. They want each other.

216 Jake,

The US Navy pioneered a weapon called "The Dynamite Gun" for the attack on Cuba. It was basically a potato gun that shot dynamite.
It was pressurized by a charge the size of a shotgun-shell and was very accurate, but because the weight had to be kept low it consisted of a bursting charge and no shrapnel.
Actual cannon were considered more valuable so the dynamite guns were scrapped.

The closest I've come to an explanation is that europeans have adopted neo-marxism as a religion.

In conspicuously rejecting traditional Christianity, they wrapped themselves in a noose of self-loathing and anti-Western conviction out of spite.

Their affectation is a religious thing without history or hard-won refinement. Just a pathological belief in eroding Western civilization.

In order for the EU to be created, they had to brainwash Europe into the idea that culture was a thing of the past... that all cultures were equal.

The elite and media shoved it down their throats... until the overton window was such that if you talked about being French, or being British, you were a Nationalist, which made you a Nazi..... kinda like they are trying here in America.

Problem is, that when you do that, you must then say that really bad cultures (ISLAM) are the equal of yours.... even if the are barbarians.

Thus.... the problem they now find themselves in.

In order to squash the barbarians, they must once more decide that some cultures are better than others.... which brinds back National Identity.... which will destroy the EU.

The Juramentados would wrap themselves in white linen strips, I was told it was to prevent bleeding out if you got hit in an extremity, but I suppose it would act as a type of armor.
It was one of the reason the US army wanted a more powerful cartridge than the .38 in spite of the international drive to a smaller cartridge to match the smaller bores for rifles made possible by the adoption of smokeless powder.

Per Col. Legarde of the Medical Corps who was on the testing team wrote:
"at war with savage tribes or a fanatical enemy, a military man seeks to arm his soldiers with a rifle that delivers projectiles with telling effect. A fanatic like a Moro wielding a bolo in each hand who advances with leaps and bounds and who never knows when he is hit until he is shot down must be hit with a projectile having a maximum amount of stopping power. Again [. . .] has to recon upon the stopping power of projectiles against cavalry and artillery horses in a charge."

The ordinance commission on development of a new cartridge was tasked for a replacement, they knew the .45 long colt and .44-40 had more oomph and would knock someone down, but they wanted something more modern in an automatic. A number of other cartridges were tested at the same time, including the 7.63 mauser, (C-96 ammo), 9mm parabellum and the French St. Eteinnne in 11mm. They like the larger cartridges and found that although the smaller faster jacketed bullets did more damage to skulls the larger slower bullets had greater trauma in a body shot, backing up combat reports. One test was to check the ability to pierce a horse's skull in a glancing shot (which was tested in a stock-yard by the way) since defeating cavalry was a big thing.
The specs were refined for the ideal .45 cartridge and further tests were conducted between Browning's and Savage's models

A very charming and considerate young lady - what she was doing there, I'll never know; I didn't ask - offered me a kleenex from her purse.

At the intermission, we talked a while and I pointed out #2 Daughter to her in the program.

"That's so sweet," she said. "A lot of guys wouldn't come to something like this. And the ones who did wouldn't get all misty over it."

"A man's heart can only be so full," I answered.

She blushed and we chatted a bit more.

She wrapped up with: "Your wife must adore you."

I waved my ringless left hand at her and she blushed some more.

I left tonight overwhelmed with the pride of a parent, and with a new phone number.

well we are the buyer of first and last resort, and we've run up all our credit cards so demand is probably slowing, despite mainlining stimulus via ZIRP and QE.

China just needs to pass out credit cards to a billion of their citizens, then all the world can sell to them, global recovery. ha

It will be a tough recovery even if we brought our factories back, since we kept running up debt. Corporate execs loved their bonuses, China loved the revenue stream.

Pro tip: When you go to these sorts of events, carry a camera - a real one, the sort what takes film, and make that film Kodak Portra.

Shot almost a full roll of #2 Daughter, and few with her of #1 daughter. Taught my new friend how to use it, and her to shoot a few of us all together, and then spent the last three shots on her.

She was fascinated by photography that wasn't instant - most women under 40 are - and this provided her the excuse to give me her number, so she could see the pictures when they're developed.

460 The Crash of '08 was attempt by the system to reset. Look at some long term graphs of debt to GDP ratio, and one that includes all debt, private as well as public.

That total doesn't like to get over %350ish. That usually brings on a Big Reset. And actually, it may break down to different sectors, with limits on each.

1929ish? Debt peaked around then. Started crashing. We hear about how FDR big government borrowing and spending saved us. Well, before that, US public debt was pretty low. The total debt to GDP actually went down, even with public debt rising. Private debt destruction was going on much faster.

Then, after WWII, that total hovered around 150%, nice and stable. We had boom and bust as normal. But, in the late 80s, that ratio started increasing. When the housing bubble kicked in, it went into overdrive.

It tried to reset in '08, topping out over 350%. The effect of Uncle and the Fed was to arrest that collapse, level it, and attempt to restart the debt fueled bubble.

All they are doing is making the final reset, which much come, all that much worse.

I've considered shooting digital, but I just can't make myself plunk down the cash for a good set of kit.

I bought my stuff in the '90's, and I'll be damned if I give any of it up before I absolutely have to....

Yes, I scan negatives, for those who want that - I had a paying gig where a hipster wanted the warmth of film for the digital versions of his 'social media' (a/k/a dating site) profile, etc. - but I just can't get away from film.

I've tried good digital rigs, but the images always seem 'cold,' somehow. I'm sure it's just me, and not the materials and techniques, but there it is.

recorded on the film. Nothing radical, but there are technical choices a
man can make.

I've dabbled. Got some things published in mags and shit. Not a lot, though. Nothing technical. My MO was doing stuff with limited tools. 35mm on Kodak disposables and shit. See what can be achieved with that shit.Haven't done anything for a few years though.

As I mentioned the other night, I have my old Pentax, and the grandpa's Leica. I've been taking some experimental shots with the Leica, to figure out if the shutter timing is consistent. The shutter curtain itself looks pretty bad. Also, my dad's old Kodak 35mm.

I've spent - and made, too - a fair amount of money on old cameras. A CLA from a guy who knows what he's doing is usually less than a hundred bucks.

Many's the yard-sale or Craigslist 'broken camera' I've picked up for a few bucks, had reconditioned, and sold or added to my kit.

Shot a whole roll, save two frames, of her that way, then shot two frames of her in the aftermath..

Those last two frames, even now, we keep as a sweet and sacred mystery between us.

641 Someone was talking a few days back about roasts coming out all tough and dry. I had previously done a top round roast in a slow-cooker with "John Boy and Billy's Eastern Carolina BBQ Sauce" and had it come out fork-tender and, served in a bowl with a little of what it cooked in, very tasty.

Well, tomorrow I'm going to try it with bottom round. The plan is to remove clearly excess fat, cube at about 1.5" cube, fill the slow cooker with the chunks, and cover with the sauce. Hit it about 6 hours on "low".

Bottom round is the outside muscle of the upper leg -- it tends to be tough and chewy and typically is one of the cheaper cuts of beef. Normally I'd avoid the hell out of it, but......with the previous crock-pot success.....what the hell.

Won't happen. Not like that at least, unless you mean April the following year. Even that would be uncharacteristically speedy.

But it doesn't matter because she won't be indicted. DoJ is controlled by people who view prosecution as a political tool. Even if someone at the FBI falls on his sword and recommends an indictment, they'll just ignore him.

The fiancee was very active for a time in Toastmasters. She decided to earn the coveted "roast" certificate to celebrate my 50th birthday....and she focused on some key features: (1) In my misspent youth, I ran out of toilet paper, bar soap, and shampoo....and resolved to never do so again -- so we have about a month's worth on hand at all times; (2) I like to get my money's worth out of things that I buy -- that's why I drive a 1994 Honda and frequently wear sneakers until I wear through the soles; and (3) I'm not a big fan of "calling the fix-it person" -- when things need work, I generally prefer to figure it out myself.

Posted by: cthulhu at January 24, 2016 04:15 AM (EzgxV)

691 I never had the balls to get up and do karaoke, so I will give you kudos for even doing it.
I have witnessed 100's of people make fools of themselves, more than half not caring one bit, and walking away with a giant smile.

693 Chi,

I grew up in a musical family. Dad was lead singer for a local band when I was a kid. Mom would often sing duets with him. My Grandpa and my uncle were both musicians. I never learned to play anything, but I could sing, and I love to do it. Since I don't have a band, karaoke is the next best thing.

Prince L,

That's one I do occasionally. That key change at the end is a tough one, though.

Posted by: Captain Whitebread at January 24, 2016 04:23 AM (rJUlF)

698 May be too late for any to notice, but I was just reading some shit. It turns out that all the pro-immigration economic analysis is likely a pile of steaming bullshit.

Remember the infamous Mariel boatlift? There was some paper published claiming that proved that the import of all that cheap unskilled labor into the Miami market didn't affect the wages of Americans at all. That's been the gospel of the open-border libertarian and conservative types, such as the WSJ.

Someone re-ran the original numbers and found they showed that indeed, the Mariel boatlift greatly depressed the wages of *comparable* Americans (poorly educated, low skilled).

And then he goes on about the tricks that were used to hide that fact. It's basically the same as global warming. Lies and number fudging to make reality conform to an a priori ideology.

703 Capt,
The last time I sang I was serenading a pretty lady, and that was a good year ago - "I've got the world on a string."
I used to be able to pull off a few blues tunes pretty well, but you know how good you sound in the shower, right? I doubt that translates well to the local dive bar.

A lifetime ago, my best friend was trying to start a band. They were struggling. I was hanging out, watching them practice, when he said "come on, man! We're in my basement! No one can hear your - just help us nail this song down..."
I sang for a few minutes, loved it, and have never stepped behind a mic since.

Sometimes, I miss going to bars.

Posted by: Chi at January 24, 2016 04:34 AM (I7I0v)

709 Mornin', Chi. How bad is your Snowmageddon in dreary ol' Nahfuk? I'm near LGA, and we got around two and a half feet of the racist white stuff. Thanks to the snowplows going down the street, I can barely see the tops of parked cars.

Posted by: RickZ at January 24, 2016 04:40 AM (Ix+HS)

710 Wasn't bad at all here, Rick. The one corner of Va that didn't get pounded, I guess.

Where is LGA? I thought you were... well, I was wrong apparently.

We got maybe 1/2" yesterday, quickly washed away by last night's rain and 50 mph winds, then overnight we got freezing rain, turning to sleet, which turned into snow - not even an inch out there now, but it's all layered on top of ice, so I expect carmaggedon style accidents tomorrow.

Only thing I have to deal with is 1000 branches in the yard & a few tripped circuit breakers at the neighbors' houses.

Posted by: Chi at January 24, 2016 04:50 AM (I7I0v)

711 So, I'm puttin' this out there partially because of Chi's toast, even though it's one of my favourite bands....but I want to spread some knowledge before you watch it. There's a peculiarity that will hit you as you watch, and it's not highlighting the surrealism of the underlying metaphor -- the lead singer is really nearly 7' tall, and the bassist may not crack 5' [to get an accurate feel, the lead guitarist is of normal stature and the bassist's bass is normal scale {but headless....I wonder why he prefers that....}].

I saw this band live in a cabaret setting -- the singer scooped a candle off of a table in the front and did the entire first verse with his hand held over it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hZnf-_XNiU

Posted by: cthulhu at January 24, 2016 04:57 AM (EzgxV)

712 And, when I say "branches" that is every stick from 1" to 3 " in diameter.
Not complaining, because I use most of the bigger stuff from the pecan & maple trees for smoking meats. I haven't even walked out back to check the apple & pear trees.

723 True story - back in the mid 80's, I worked in a factory. Polymer concrete manufacturing. Yep, resin + sand + gravel, making lightweight, super-strength drainage ditches and junction boxes.

More than 50 % of the non-OSHA approved labor was Vietnamese.
After about 6 months of nasty, dirty labor, I moved up to a white shirt. QC office. I had access to the pellet guns, and when bored, would walk the plant floor, plink pigeons & seagulls. The Vietnamese ladies paid me $1 per bird.

They sold spring rolls in the parking lot at lunchtime (actually, all day long ) and everyone loved them. Almost no one put 2 and 2 together...

724 cthulhu, I've read your missives about Commiefornia before. It does suck to be toed to a place that you want to exit, stage right, ASAP. 727 Chi, I also have a pigeon story.

This one time when I went to my dentist back in the early '90s, he had an older Jewish woman as a receptionist. She conspiratorially asked me if I noticed there were fewer pigeons in the neighborhood? She blamed in on the Chinese takeout places. Now Chinese takeout places serving cat, I believe. The NYSlimes (back when I read it) used to run a column in the Sunday paper listing all the restaurants with food violations, and the cause. This one Wall Street area Chinese takeout place was cited for having cats in their freezer. Nothing like a good General Tso's Cat.
