EMT 1/24/16 Problematic Oscars edition [krakatoa]

Like so many, I am deeply concerned about what's going on in Hollywood regarding the Oscars.

These accusations of racism should be fully explored, and I hope you find the following commentary both insightful and perhaps, if I may be so bold, an example to us all in how to deal with such allegations with the proper amount of respect and sensitivity.

I think I probably speak for us all when I say (cont'd below the fold)

American Jews get more of the "hate crimes" committed against them than jihadists, blacks, or "Hispanics", so their protected class status is not very protective. I've mentioned before how Dad told of the Moroccan Ghoumiers ("Gooms") of the French Expeditionary Corps reputation for night patrols where they would sneak into an encampment, feeling for the dogtags on a sleeping soldier's neck to determine if they were Allies or Germans. I don't know if that was true or legend, but I can imagine him in his cot holding his breath while the wind rustled his tent flap, waiting to feel a hand on his chest. The upthread comment about where to put it - watched a crew using a front end loader clear out an intersection on 66 in VA. Based on how they were pushing the snow (and knowing that intersection well), I'd say there was easily 4 feet drifted into that spot, and they were just piling it over the guardrail as best they could...

177 Was it wet snow or light powder?

Seeing the roof collapses in VA, I'm guessing heavy and wet.

Posted by: the littl shyning man at January 24, 2016 08:44 AM (U6f54)

In Richmond VA, the snow was light powder, then it was ice pellets and then it was wet.

178 Not too many great actors out there that fit my definition of a great actor. Lots of good actors but to be great you have to make me forget who you are. When I see Will Smith in a movie I always see Will Smith playing a character. When I see Christian Slater I see the character and forget It's Chrisrian Slater. ( I'm sure Slater in real life is more of a dick than Smith)

Been on twitter for a couple days now @ Free Citizen 4 Now.... been asking the Hollywood stars complaining about racism ( Spike Lee, Jada Pinkett, Kerry Washington) all over Hollywood to NAME the racists so I can boycott their films.

Not one Hollywood star has responded to my request to NAME names. Funny that...

It's almost like this is a made up bullsh*t charge to get some kind of a collective white guilt thing going and to get out the minority vote this election season...just like the Black Lives Matter movement.

It's best to call these SJWs on their b.s. ...but, Hollywood leftists at the Academy WILL cave somehow on this crap.... THAT is a guarantee.

187 I don't want to see "The Revenant" Sounds too bloody although I understand (from someone who did ) that the scenery is breathtaking. I also don't want to see it because ******SPOILER ALERT********

He goes after the men who live him for dead for revenged also because they killed his Native American son. There is no evidence that he had an Native American son, but of course that has to be the PC tagline-the White men men don't just leave him for dead, they kill his son (or at least one of them does) because white men are cowardly and evil always unless you're the protaganist;

Here's another reflection on what could have made the story better-the truth:

SPOLIER ALERT

192 On this day, here in Denver, the Patriots will kick the Broncos ass.

As a transplant from elsewhere, and not a serious fan of football, but having lived in Pittsburgh for four of their six championship seasons, my observation is that most of the NFL teams have a huge fan base of working class people.

Not so much in Denver. Too many hipster douchebags. So when a team out of eastern MA comes to play, with Tom Brady throwing, it's gonna be a down day for the Broncs.

201 Cruz said Trump's lawyers said previously everything was fine, but Trump just said he'd heard lawyers had checked it out and everything was fine ... not "Trump's lawyers looked into it".

There are two suits now, one in IL by a Carson supporter that's a lawyer/pharmacist. The article said Trump didn't think those two had standing. idk, but it seems a Carson supporter has standing since his guy is the other evangelical candidate. Harm is evidenced in polling ... but ianal.

I'd rather they take the case and settle it now so that is off the table. Labeling it a "birther" issue is like what the left did to any that questioned not just Obama's birthplace, but anything about his socialist upbringing, and commie mentors. It's just a smear, and even Mark Steyn said it is not so clear. Courts would clear it up (most likely in Cruz's favor, regardless of actual law, after Barry Soetoro from Connecticut) and get it off the table so Cruz doesn't have to deal with it now or later.

202 Ah, Sunday morning book thread AND the power is still on. A wonderful start to the day.

On Moron recommendation I got Ted Koppel's "Lights Out" on cyberattacks and the aftermath. I jumped to the section on surviving the aftermath, which begins: "For the most part, public reaction to the possibility of a massive cyberattack has not even risen to the level of apathy. Apathy suggests the awareness of a problem and the decision not to worry about it. To the degree that government and its disaster relief operations focus our attention at all, they direct it toward the familiar: natural disasters common to our region, or variations on terrorist attacks that have already occurred."

He has thus far treated the prepping community with respect. Anyone who has observed government response to disasters over the last decade, and the lack of guidance for dealing with anything longer than 72 hours, can see that individuals are on their own.

204 Cruz's attorney could have the United States Post Office, a competent Federal authority, deliver 50 bags of mail to the courtroom, specifically the Judge's bench, all addressed simply to President Cruz. That would prove that Cruz was in fact the one and only Santa Claus Natural Born Citizen.

206 Once again reading about the Campus Accountability and Safety Act in the SideBar and I have to say, the law should simply say that all sex crimes allegations must be reported to the local law enforcement. That should end the University's part in the process. Full stop. The University might, in good conscience, have a guideline that anyone arrested for sex crimes will not be allowed on campus until it is adjudicated, but that would be it.
