Steyn on How the Bowie-Crosby Duet Mashup Came to Be

I've recounted before the tale of how young Bowie wound up writing the first English lyric of "My Way" (with Anthony Newley in mind), and I often find myself, when the song pops up on the radio, singing along with the Bowie text. And this close to Christmas I could always dust off his duet with Bing, recorded at Elstree in September 1977 for that year's Crosby Christmas special. A month later Bing dropped dead on a Spanish golf course, and the show was aired posthumously. There had been some last-minute drama surrounding Bowie's appearance on the show. The producers informed him that he'd be singing his song "Heroes" and then doing "Little Drummer Boy" with Bing. "I hate that song!" he fumed. "I'm only doing the show because my mum loves Bing. But I refuse to sing 'Little Drummer Boy'." And he meant it.

This was the day before they were due to record, and they already had the arrangement of "Drummer Boy", and Bing liked it. So Buz Kohan, the show's producer and writer, and Ian Fraser, the British conductor, got together with Larry Grossman, an old hand at special material, and in half-an-hour wrote a contrapuntal theme that Bowie could sing over the existing chart of "Drummer Boy". That's the "Peace On Earth" part of the number - and Ian Fraser hastily arranged the middle-eight for the orchestra so that Bing could join in on part of the new song. He evidently enjoyed it, hailing young David as "a real fine asset to the show", as well as "a clean-cut kid", which no one had hitherto accused Bowie of. And so the man who introduced "White Christmas" wound up partially introducing one last Christmas song in the final weeks of his life. All because David Bowie threw a big hissy fit.

HBO Will Air the Seven-Hour Epic Cut Of 'The Godfather'

In 1977, NBC found some time in its busy schedule of Chico and the Man reruns to air The Godfather Saga, a massive seven-and-a-half-hour chronological edit of The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. It follows Marlon Brando's Vito Corleone from his young immigrant days, where he's played by Robert De Niro, to when he's a crazy old man with oranges in his mouth.

The Godfather Saga had director Francis Ford Coppola's blessing (he reportedly said yes because he needed money to finish making Apocalypse Now). But with the Saga's toned-down violence and frequent commercial breaks, not to mention how it aired over four nights, it's not the way The Godfather and The Godfather Part II deserve to be seen. Enter HBO, which is airing the re-named Godfather Epic throughout January, complete with restored violence and footage that was cut from the theatrical releases.

News That May Be of Use To You: What It's Like to Be a Pimp

Remember though that pimpin' ain't easy.

I remember when I heard pimpin ain't easy for the first time, long before I ever turned my first bitch out I thought it was a joke. I thought pimpin ain't easy was like "I'm so hungry I could eat a horse". I thought it was an over exaggeration, like yeah, pimpin ain't easy cause you gotta count all that money boo-hooo right? Well after being a pimp for a while I can certainly attest to the fact that pimpin ain't easy and it's no joke.

Being a pimp is not hard, and I don't mean to over exaggerate in any way cause I sure as hell don't mean to make it sound like working a dead end 9-5 or even compare to being a CEO of a major company. The saying was never pimpin is hard, pimps just say pimpin ain't easy because the general conception is that pimping takes no work or effort at all. A true pimp will make it look easy, but it's far from being easy.

If you ain't a pimp and you're just reading this out of interest, then think about it like this. if you've ever had a wife or a girlfriend who needs to talk, feel wanted, feel comforted, feel safe, feel secure, feel like she knows you love her, feel like her future holds better things, feel like she's the center of the fucking universe and if not, she's bitchin and nagging at you. Then just imagine the same situation but your wife is a bitch who's fucking 5-10 tricks a day, she was sexually abused as a child, she's got a handfull of addictions going from caffeine and nicotine to prescription drugs to straight up cocaine and heroine problems. Now on top of your bitch being that fucked up you've also got 5-10 of them to deal with on a daily basis 24/7.

18 I've tried -- I don't think successfully -- to explain to my kids how important that Bing-Bowie duet was. They don't understand the thing that was the Generation Gap.

For me, born 1960, I wouldn't listen to Crosby. I wouldn't listen to Sinatra, hell I wouldn't listen to Elvis. If it was pre-Beatles it was wrong and it was everything we had to react against.

Likewise for my parents, everything post-Beatles was "jungle music" and noise.

There was even a TV show called The Generation Gap to show how far apart the generations were.

When Bowie and Crosby crossed that divide it was groundbreaking. My mother, now in her dotage, pretends not to remember being hostile to everything new and can listen to this song as just a good song.

At the time it was an earthquake.

Baking soda is straight sodium bicarbonate; and relies on acid in the food to create the bubbles that make the dough rise.

Baker powder contains a little acid, usually tartaric acid, and starts evolving gas as soon as it is moistened.

There's also a balance of leavening but I have to keep that confidential, since I don't remember without looking at my recipe card. Plus weigh the ingredients instead of measuring by volume. Too much room for error. I also slam them on the rack right before they're done. Trick I learned, surprisingly, from kitchen ladies in elementary school. That's about the only good thing they could have possibly taught anyone about cooking or baking. Gah!

One time last year, they forecast the Great Blizzard of 2015, which turned out to be a dub (said the lower atmosphere was just too warm and melted it all, or something -- they had egg all over their faces).

I was actually out of milk and it was the day to go the grocery store. They had completely cleaned out the milk. There was absolutely nothing left. Even the damn buttermilk was gone. And the bread aisle was completely wipe out, with only some hot dog buns, and just one or two of those left.

You have to heat the bejesus out of sodium carbonate to get it to release CO2 (I'm guessing > 4-500 C, i.e,. long after any cookies would be carbonized). Bear in mind that the product would be Na2O, which is not a happy compound, which as a fiercely basic compound,. given half a chance ... absorbs CO2. Or reacts with anything else that can be mistaken for an acid.

They did the same thing in NC, any threat of bad weather and they all ran out and bought up all the milk and bread.

Odd thing is, relative to other states I've lived in, they didn't have much of a bread selection (hell of a corn meal selection though), so is wasn't like they lived on the stuff, but they bought it up in bad weather.

164 According to the old timers, the milk and bread craze, at least here started back in 1960 or so. There was a late snow, and it came on the same day of the week for three weeks.

They hadn't forecast much, and went it started they said nothing to worry about. Wrong. Kids got stranded at school and all that crap, and apparently people ran out of groceries. Nothing bad, just a major PITA.

Anyway, they said after that was when the school districts started erring on the side of caution and now shut it down on the mere mention of the word snow. And that caused the "Snow, I'll run out of milk and bread" reaction.

181 I grew up in ND. If we heard a big storm was coming everybody would go grocery shopping. Store would be packed. Blizzard party's. Make chili and dip and drink hot chocolate or other things while the storm howls. Have food and tp and dig out the next day. Might take a day or two for the roads to be clear. I imagine it's been that way since there were grocery stores. Like having water and batteries for hurricanes

Depression - even to the point of becoming suicidal - can hit at an early age. With someone that young I wonder if there were external factors at work too, like abuse, molestation, bullying, etc.

We may be purple but it's purple gun.

I believe we have the highest percentage of state populations of concealed carry licenses.

And that's because it's easy and cheap.

And the 2nd amendment is in the state's constitution which puts a whole kink in the Democrats who try to bring up stupid gun laws.

We're among the four state east of the Atlantic that have sane gun laws. N.Carolina; Georgia and New Hampshire.

Maryland has a lot of guns but shitty gun laws. Probably a lot of criminals.

203 Sad about the OK suicides. Checkout Bridgend, UK. They had a very eerie suicide situation going on in their town. Like...over 20 suicides, during I don't know what amount of time, but for a small community, pretty massive.

The weird thing about it was....not allof these people seemed to be friends, like some sort of suicide pact. Some were friends, but many weren't They vaguely knew each other, or didn't know each other at all. It was as if one led to another led to another, but with no reasoning why. And, all the same manner (hanging).

I hope this OK thing isn't some sort of copycat situation. Or some sort of mental health breakdown like is happening over there.

I don't think joblessness was the issue here. More despondency because a trusted friend offed himself. I think it all started when one young guy, sort of the alpha male of that crowd, was killed when he rolled his truck at high speed after hitting a T-intersection without slowing down. I don't know if that was suicide, or just drunk driving, but the string of suicides came after that.

261 I can't comment on the suit, other than it looks "period". The pay phone has a lot wrong with it: 12 finger holes in the dial, no finger stop; wrong coin slots, and the slots are sized wrong for the coins indicated. Someone up-thread said that pay phones with handsets weren't around in '41, but I know desk sets with handsets definitely were, so it's quite possible that some new payphone installations would have handset phones, But definitely, the 2-piece phones would still have been around for for years to come.

Funny, isn't it? There's a newspaper in New Braunfels - one of my favorite Texas towns, and home to a lady who broke my heart - called "The Herald-Zeitung."

I was shocked when I moved here to see the footprint the Germans left....

I lived in a town named for a Spanish General who went all Benedict Arnold on the Mexicans for years - all the street-names were german, and the local Conjunto club was in the same place, and with the same band, as the polka club.

Texas - it's like at least three or four different cultures all sort of moved in together.

I'm willing to give it a try.

paying for content must be painless. Like when you walk past a newsstand and see a headline that piques your interest.

So (because of past experience with the periodical you know you'll enjoy other stuff) you plop down you're 50 cents or whatever.

But I'm not going to do that for every Blog or click bait article I see. So it has to be micro pennies. This is where the internet failed. No means of micro payments.

Subscriptions only work for something you do daily and only if you can afford the hit. And that's the other thing. Cost.

This ad stuff may be the way if the loading doesn't take a big hit.

Interesting idea. And it's open source. Take that Micro Duh.

Marriage is a state issue but the feral government has an interest in marriage and a responsibility to set the rules concerning inter-state recognition of marriage. Each state defines marriage for itself but no state is required to accept some other state's insane reformulation of the concept. The federal government did its duty with respect to this issue with the DOMA - which is exactly how the Constitution said it should be done. Along with this, the federal government keeps its own definition of marriage (since it's used for immigration and some other purposes - and marriage has always been one of the bedrocks of our society) and doesn't have to accept certain insane notions of marriage that the demented states come up with.

As to the particular debate within any state about gay pretend marriage, there is only one valid side, but demented, commie states are going to do what they're going to do.

It is valid to note that the law is seriously screwed up about marriage. Where it should be none of the State's business, it is used as shorthand for legal outcomes in an exceptionally wide variety of situations -- it is entirely possible that no living person actually knows how many.

Furthermore, the idea that one should need a "marriage license", issued by government, is crap on stilts. You have a natural right to breathe, be married or not, speak your mind, attend your church, get together with like-minded folks to ask government to right wrongs, defend yourself, be silent when the government wants to pin something on you, or read whatever you'd like. Coupling any of these natural rights with a "license" from the government is unconstitutional meddling -- that governments have been attempting to do since this Nation's founding. That they gained what successes they have is a damned shame.

354 Sex and Gender are NOT Social Constructs

Originally, "gender" and "biological sex' meant the same thing, or that "gender" was a grammatical concept more or less consistent with biological sex.* Then the two terms started to be used together, as first seemingly redundantly; once established in law, the treatment of "gender" and "biological sex" as two mutually unrelated terms brought forth the "trans" aspect of "social justice." Now that normalcy has become denormalized, and contranormative social norms have trumped verinormative ones, the distinguishment between "gender" and "biological sex" has become #problematic. But by recombining the two meanings, it is not objective biological reality that is winning the day, but the idea that objective reality itself that is a social construct.

I've been saying that for a while, Hat. Gender is just a linguistic device used to describe people based on apparent biological sex. There's only two biological sexes, so there should only ever be two genders. The Left, with their usual agenda of wedging people into a bunch of competitive identity cliques that they can then manipulate, has seen fit to complicate the obvious by injecting some non-mainstream religion into the mix; they claim that a person has a soul which can be born into the wrong body. This is how they justify their nonsense as not being a mental disorder. What society should be doing is going "well, we have this thing called the separation of church and state, and your ideas about souls are inherently religious as they pertain to souls, so we can't legislate on the grounds of it as it would constitute an establishment of religion." But given that the Left is hypocrisy and plunder in political form, legislating according to their new religion is exactly what they're trying to do.

Just as the rape culture on campus thing is an attack on Men in College. Force men out of college and women take a larger roll in the world and make more of the decisions. (which is already happening but not fast enough for some of these radicals)

Radical Feminist are bat shit crazy and want to take the world down with them. (cause most of them are suicidal and won't procreate.

Sadly, whenever some kid at that age commits suicide, the whole community goes into overload with coverage of it, and all the schoolmates go on and on about how they knew the kid, and the school does all kinds of tributes to the kid. Another kid that feels like an outsider sees all the love/attention focused on the deceased kid and decides he wants to go out because he/she will get the adulation.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

As for Native Americans, I had an Inuit employee, 22 years old, that committed suicide. Everybody loved the guy, but he got a DWI and didn't want to let the nation down by being labeled the "drunk indian". Sad thing is that his younger brother almost went down the same road. Luckily, his wife got him to go get help.

384 For too long the right (for the lack of a better word. I'm swearing off 'conservative' for a while) has never acknowledged that the left is an enemy.

They've been approached as an equal but different point of view but who's basic mores were more alike than different.

We were wrong.

Obama has shown us how wrong we are/were.

They intend to bring forth a new nation that will look nothing like even the current USA and for sure no where near how the old USA looked and worked.

This is with malice aforethought and they will use every trick and trap they can come up with to reach they're goal.

They are worse than Muslims/Islam. They are a tyrannical control structure and they have almost succeeded in swallowing the USA whole.

If the right fails to protect the rule of law and the legal electorate and allows foreigners to dictate our politics then we will quickly be lost.

And the world is a willing participant.

The USA was/has always been a fluke an outlier from the norms that retain power throughout the rest of the world.

They don't like the comparisons they don't like the example that it shows their slaves. So America must die.

And the left must be treated as a deadly enemy.

Anything they want no matter how reasonable it may seem should be fought against tooth and nail without absolute proof that it will be a benefit for all and not just for the left.

The legal entanglement is because of centuries of slop, and we are paying the penalty for sloppy legal draftsmanship with centuries of interest. The fact is -- marriage under the law yesterday was a cesspit of horrendous crap for heterosexuals. Everyone bitches about the horrors and inequities of family court, everyone whines about the declining marriage rate and increasing divorce rate, everyone notes how "pre-ups" became increasingly necessary, everyone knows someone who has been reamed up-one-side-and-down-the-other through some litigated quirk of being "married" -- and that's true for women and men. Marriage under the law today has all of the crap it had yesterday, but now it's going to try to apply to homosexuals as well.

My position has been consistent over years -- let's try to drain the cesspool that state oversight of marriage has become before we invite everyone in to splash around.....and I'm saying this as someone who is well into my third decade of a relationship with the fiancee. Instead, the SJW crowd has decided it will improve society if government force is used to shove this sewage down everyone's throat.

Good luck with that -- I expect it to end badly.

I figure the commenter was just joking, but a 10x earth mass black probably ain't possible. There is no known physics that could generate one that small. The Schwarzschild radius of the earth would be, well it would be about the size of a ping pong ball or something. You need much bigger objects, many stellar mass (and I forget how) stars to be able to get a process to get a collapse, and you end up with stellar mass range black holes, with most of the parent star mass being blown out.

Yeah, Phoenix traffic can be murder. One thing I have learned, is that when freeways are crawling, bail off, get on an arterial road, and go. Arterial roads here can go for miles and miles. At a guess, Baseline Road is 50 miles, end-to-end. Unless you pick the wrong arterial, you will get there, at maybe 35 mph average speed; a lot slower than the freeway at full chat, but a lot better than a freeway moving at zero because of a wreck. And the entire valley is laid out on a pretty simple grid plan.

414 And about the "AI" algorithms. There was story that made the rounds a few years back. Some father went nuts when a chain store pharmacy (didn't really say, it was probably CVS, maybe another) starting send his teenage daughter ads targeted to pregnant women.

He went nuts, complained, how dare you send pregnancy products to my little girl, she's not old enough, you creeps. Well, you know where this is going. Turned out his daughter was indeed knocked up.

That was their algorithms predicting she was pregnant. One of the guys behind this was outright proud of his work and gave a big interview. He explained how they correlate purchases and how that has statistical predictive power. If a female buys products x, y, and z in such quantities over such a time, then there is "p" probability she is pregnant. When 'p' is high enough, they go with it.

They can do targeted print ads in the mail now. The computer printing/publishing tech is such that is cost effective to print customized for each customer and mail it to them. The flyers are customized for each individual, if they want to.

They guy said people were getting creeped out by how they seemed to know exactly what they were looking for, so he said they started throwing random stuff in they likely wouldn't want to just to hide the fact they knew what they likely wanted.

This statistics guy was amazingly open about it. But not for long. Once the article hit, he shut up big time. I'm sure his masters didn't like him telling the secrets and creeping out the public.

424 I think the black hole evaporation takes so damn long that the universe isn't old enough to have any small ones yet.

There are also problems with the whole evaporation thing. See "Unruh" radiation, which is the accelerating frame equivalent of Hawking radiation. Unruh is a pure "coordinate effect". Hawking is supposed be a real invariant, a form of real mass-energy dissipation because of real curvature (that's how the GR high-priests current define "real gravity", such as it is, in light of the Equivalence Principle".

It's doing quantum electrodynamics in an accelerating frame. Unruh, that is. The shift to non-intertial coordinates shifts what, to inertial observers is an "empty vacuum" into one that is awash in a sea (well, not much, depending on the acceleration. You'd need YUGE acceleration to get anything strong) of EM radiation.

But that is "not real". An inertial observer would say the reason the accelerating observer sees radiation is because he's accelerating, and the acceleration interacting with the quantum background, which is "empty" causes him to have interactions that look like radiation.

This gets insanely complex, and believe it or not, there are stilled unsolved problems with even classical electrodynamics in curved space-time.

I reminded everyone about that Christmas this year and told them we would have a "big one" this January.

We moved into our house in 98, and from 98-2008, we had very few and very small snows. Since Dec 2009, we have been having sporadic 10"+ snows, and I got tired of shoveling the crap, so last year I went out and got an electric snowblower. I hadn't gotten a reply and was thinking about contacting them again, then tonight I got an e-mail containing about a dozen Dropbox links with the songs. W00t! It's going to take me a while to digest all of it, but this is good stuff. It's kind of like a musical firehose in the face.

428 POP. It may be real, black holes may really radiate and evaporate. I'm just saying it's not as cut and dried, really, as some would lead you to believe.

IOW, we'd need empirical evidence of Hawking radiation. And I think there's not even experimental evidence of Unruh radiation. Both are pure theoretical propositions.

The accelerations required are just astronomical, and someone needs to figure a way to get something accelerating enough that has some measurable effect due to the proposed Unruh radiation.

I think that is currently beyond anything they can do now, or it would be too damn expensive.

IIRC, the smaller it is, the faster it "evaporates".....and the evaporation thing is that particles in a black hole find themselves accelerated.....and as their speed is known to approach lightspeed, their location becomes less certain according the Heisenberg uncertainty principle....until tremendously accelerated particles might find themselves outside the event horizon facing outward -- in which case, it's "sayonara, singularity!"

436 The problem with Hawking radiation, and I should call it Hawking-Unruh to give proper credit to Mr. Unruh, is this involves the marriage of quantum theory and General Relativity. The two actually incompatible, don't play well together.

Until they are married, a quantum theory of gravity is known, this will be problematic.

The trouble is trying to do quantum field theory on a curved spacetime background. The field near a black hole is not weak. It's a strong field, where the curvature is very high.

Everyone who tries to divine stuff with this is making assumptions, simplifying assumptions, and all that. But you're at a scale where gravity and quantum theory are the same size so to speak.

You need a quantum theory of gravity, or get them otherwise married and compatible before you can really be certain.

The field near a black hole is not weak. It's a strong field, where the curvature is very high.

Since this particular point has been brought up, I'll ask:

Is it possible that, at the event horizon, where once crossed, there's no turning back, the curvature is actually discontinuous, maybe a cusp?

This would be the only thing in Nature that I can think of that is not somehow continuous, no physical radius, not even
a mathematical one.

You seem to be making the assumption that space is, itself, smooth. That's not conventional wisdom, though. That would be a physical infinity (an infinitesimal) and modern science is all about removing mathematical infinites from physical models - with good reason, of course.

In quantum, once you escape the underlying mathematics for calculation it's all discontinuous.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at January 21, 2016 03:17 AM (zc3Db)

443 439: Actually, there is "nothing wrong" with spacetime at the event horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole. It's a coordinate problem. The curvature there is finite. The only problem is the singularity, where there is a real invariant curvature infinity.

Passing the event horizon, everything would be well. You wouldn't notice a thing. Well, assuming you were small enough, or the black hole was massive enough, that the tidal forces there didn't rip you apart.

For a stellar mass class black hole, the tidal forces would be ripping you apart well before you got anywhere near the horizon. Now, for billion stellar mass black holes such as at the center of galaxies, they'd be nothing.

Now, the problem with the horizon is reconcilling it with external observers, who themselves are not going to cross the horizon, and their sense of time and space.

Events "inside" the horizon never happen at any time on the clocks of external observers. You can say it takes "infinite" time for them.

All this will blow your mind until you get your head wrapped around it. That's why Einstein's hair was so wild.

Posted by: Arbalest at January 21, 2016 03:09 AM (FlRtG)

My understanding is that black holes exist where space-time is curved to such an extent that the actual mass doing the curving is in a nipped-off pocket of space-time. The reason that event horizons are significant is that the warpage external to the pocket becomes so great that the escape velocity of the local area becomes faster than the speed of light.

The mathematics of this for small (atom-sized) black holes indicates that anything "in" 'em might well be observed "outside" -- which makes 'em evaporate. Larger black holes feel this problem much less, as the relative sizes of event horizons and uncertainty locations has much less of an overlap.

But, fundamentally, the basic attribute of a black hole is its "singularity" -- it curves spacetime to a degree where the curvature's radius is less than the mass' radius, thus "pinching it off".

446 Let me try to illustrate and blow your mind about what the event horizon is. Standard Schwarzschild coordinate look like spherical coordinates centered about the black hole, the "massenpunkt" as Schwarszchild called it. I could post the metric in my notation, but unless that's your bag, it would be mumbo jumbo. Any, according to those coordinates "time stops" and radial distance becomes infinitely compressed at the horizon.

Looking at the metric, what is happening there is that's the point where the curvature bends spacetime so that inside, our external notion of radial distance becomes timelike and our external notion of time becomes spacelike.

Space (in one dimension) and time "flip" senses. The radial direction is the direction of time. "r' is time. You can visualize "where" the other spacelike dimension is.

This is why nothing can escape. Everything is bound to follow time and follow that radius to r=0. You can no more escape it, that you can escape tomorrow.

You can run all over space all you want, but no where you go, tomorrow will be there in 24 hours.

You seem to be making the assumption that space is, itself, smooth.

No, I was thinking of it like an elastic membrane; smooth where there is nothing, or maybe rippled, then stretched by gravity where a planet or sun exists ... but always some sort of continuous transition, some non-zero local radius of curvature, no matter how sudden. Getting close enough to a black hole hits a point where there is no radius or time, at all, physically or mathematically, between the space on one side and the space on the other.

It night be like driving on a road (a plane or surface), then at the juncture (a line), travel would immediately (no time involved) switch to a plane or surface with a very different orientation.

Black holes are the points where you have sufficient elasticity -- and sufficient density -- that you can put a dense object on your membrane and have it sink in so far that the hole closes in above it.

I think it's easiest to explain a black hole by stating that gravity becomes the overriding force and, for gravity, there is only one direction to go (attraction) and it only gets stronger with smaller distances. So once such a gravitational collapse takes over, there's no end in the laws of physics to ever stop it. Hence, the theoretical singularity.

Yes, I realize that it appears that way to someone on "our side" of the event horizon. But I had been wondering if instead of simply swallowing everything that crosses the line, things that cross the line are simply and instantaneously forced through a discontinuity ... like on a number line with a point and 2 lines: one line approaches the point, but never reaches it, and is terminated with a circle at the point, the other line starts at the point and continues on ... and the math then resumes.

455 There's an interesting result about the Scharwzchild radius, call it R for a given mass. Imaging packing mass into a sphere of radius getting closer and closer to R. Although it's some hard slogging math, requiring some assumptions about the equation of state of matter, a result independent of that equation of state does emerge.

At 9/8R, collapse cannot be stopped. Once it gets to 9/8th R, a "pressure singularity" would develop in the center if the matter distribution remained stationary.

And interesting result of Einstein gravity is that gravity depends on "pressure" (momentum density) as well as mass-energy. At normal densities, this factor is so small as to be zero (pressure/c^2). It's only when p/c^2 becomes significant that it become a factor.

So you get a runaway. As gravity gets stronger as you compress it down, the pressure must increase. But that increases the gravity, requiring yet more pressure and yet more gravity. At 9/8th R, that blows up. And it turns out that becomes independent of the equation of state.

Infinite pressure would be required to resist gravity at the point and the sphere must collapse.

I would think you're forced into the concept of spacetime. As you look at massive objects getting more-and-more massive, gravity does become increasingly important -- and you end up with hugely massive objects, like galaxies, whose rotation about their center of mass is the biggest deal they have....but black holes do not fit into that. Black holes are where the warpage of spacetime is paramount, and observed gravitational forces are observed in spaces inadequate to hold the masses that should produce them.

... but, form 446, "time stops" (I assume approximately). Or maybe it really does stop, as, while crossing the discontinuity, the rate of change of ... everything ... goes to infinity ... the speed of light is encountered.

... at least this makes good dialog for the next Star Trek movie.

459 Time doesn't stop, that's only a coordinate effect. To external observers, it does, sort of. But to horizon crossing observers, in their own frame, time ticks along as usual. Until the hit the singularity.

But no one really believe they exist. All black holes are rotating, most likely, and that results in a more complicated metric, known as the Kerr metric. There be strong frame dragging afoot there. The singularity in a Kerr hole is actually a ring, and the spacetime inside is even more exotic. There are actually two horizons. The inner horizon is a Cauchy horizon, and closed time like curves exist beyond.

And no one believes in any of that really, either.

What is really going on is just beyond our current physics. There are some interesting theoretical musings and all that, but nothing proved.

The key to the formation of a black hole is merely that there are no repulsive forces (or rotation) large enough to counter attractive gravity. I don't think you need to go into spacetime or anything too complicated just for this. When there is nothing stronger than gravitational attraction then there is nothing to stop implosion to a singularity (in the theory). In the normal world, there are the other forces of Nature to keep gravity at bay ... but once they are all bested, it's goodnight Irene.

Since black holes are "pinched-off" from the normal, observable universe, there is little to bar one from being connected to another. In theory, you could fall into Cygnus X-1 and end up orbiting Sagittarius A* -- but being that there's no way to get back outside the event horizon of either except as quanta, this is likely impractical, untestable, and useless.

You're really dying for a discontinuity

You should hang out with quantum theory. There things are so discontinuous that there aren't even any laws of physics, really ... just that things are observed to happen in certain ways with enough frequency to give the impression that there are Laws of Physics.

Today they are probably making deals with ISIS

It was initially supposed to miss us....it may still. Forecasters are in CYA mode.."it depends on the track of the storm".....plausible deniability.

Still here, but no longer active?

I'm betting that it's one of those five.

530 When the seagull-innards are propitious, the weather prognosticators try to out-do themselves, hoping a cute guy will portray them in the next "Perfect Storm" film.

Locally, our dancing weather-fairy took this opportunity to pile on the "new NASAdata" on global warming. Just to improve his credibility.

In olden times, if your forecast was wrong often enough, you were consigned to the flame. True social conservatives realize that ancient customs existed for a reason.

I think if you managed to get a few articles published stating that there is no global warming and the lack of alien invaders proves it, within a month or two NASA would show us what's in all those locked hangars. Yes, X-Files is back.

I thought it was because of the arguing about Trump and Cruz. Which means we're going to see a lot more of Yoko over the coming months.

Probably a lot more attempted homicide in Philly when someone comes along, discovers a freshly shoveled out parking spot and pulls in.

Believe it or not the Philly police have released a rap video 'no savesies' to inform the public that the practice of shoveling out your car and parking spot then putting cheap lawn chairs in the spot will no longer be tolerated, they will confiscate the lawn chairs.

I'm not making this up.

I hate those stories of small businesses paying "protection" money to the mafia, although they might not have had other options. But come on, if you're a sovereign nation, you should not cut deals with scum like the PLO or ISIS. You can use that money to beef up security instead. Sad, if what you say is true.

545 @543 Sorry to hear it. You know, experts who are always ape-shit about how the petroleers are ripping them off seem to have one thing in common: they've never actually been in the oil business. You can sure make a small fortune (out of a large one) in a damn big hurry.
