That kind of reminds me of a conversation I had with a coworker once. Somehow we were talking about Affirmative Action, hiring quotas, and such. She was saying that it was racist to ask for an applicant's race on an application. I said in a number of cases you can determine race anyway, such as the applicant's first name being something like Laqueesha or something. I was told that making an assumption like that would be racist too.
This race stuff has me so confused. I suppose now a lily white family naming their daughter Laqueesha would be racist, or culturally appropriative or something.

Gah! This is what happened when I went to get an updated license w/my new address:
--- I give her my new address, she asks if I want them to update voter registration (yes) and be an organ donor (no).
--- I review the print-out (20 + min. later): street name misspelled, organ donor "Y".
--- I send it back; updated printout: address correct, organ donor "Y" and no longer registered in new voting district.
--- I send it back; organ donor corrected, not voter registration.
This took close to 2 hours. At no point did they apologize for the multiple errors or even acknowledge that this pathetic performance; I was an annoyance for making them update the dang thing so many times.

I totally agree with this (do you have a newsletter by any chance?).
I guess my opinion is tempered by thinking that she is working this from a retail politics angle. Yes, we have troubles that extend far beyond what person is in the White House, but that isn't going to get LIVs to the polls. They are being given a simple problem/solution thing instead.
I don't know how effective it will be, but Palin looks to be going the down home inspirational route, which to me makes sense in a primary. Let Trump make the substantive argument. Palin's goals is to drive votes.

I liked the movie... didn't get to me as much as Blackhawk down did, but it was still emotional. Definitely rewatchable. My other conservative-minded bud liked it though he was completely ignorant of the set-up.. what lead to what.. but after the movie he was piqued to do some reading. Good reaction.
The other guy.. the ESPN know-nothing/ kinda liberal... he didn't say squat. He was in an uncomfortable mindset so we didn't push him. They're talking about .50BMG here. Why not "enough to penetrate a car's engine block" or "enough to go through medium armor" or some such thing? Properly used, almost anything can bring down a helicopter. Hitting them is the hard part.

It is not pessimism, it is the same rational conclusion that a passenger in a car which has run off of a cliff and is on the way to the valley below reaches; "this will not end well". While it is true that a back seat driver prating: "No, all we have to do is put on the breaks and turn around" is insane - you are technically correct that there is no further damage done by her saying it. The Joker style grin on the face of the driver isn't helping anything - but choking him till his eyes bulge out now is a futile gesture.

The one thing that is hugely better in Maryland over Ohio is the DMV.
In Maryland, all vehicle/driver related functions are consolidated in one office. You go in, tell the reception what you're there to do. She checks to make sure you have the necessary documents and gives you a number. You can sit in a waiting area reading your phone until they call your number.
In Ohio, changing my license and registration required visits to no fewer four different state offices. The website about what information you need is inaccurate. If you don't have them all, you don't find out until after you've waited in line for an hour, and if you don't have the right documents you have to start over. And you have to wait in line because there's no receptionist at the door to check you in and give you a number. Also, they get extremely pissy if you try to pass the time in line by surfing the net on your phone.

The mayors veto puts an end, at least for now, to legislation that generated passions on both sides. It passed the board of supervisors on a 6-5 vote last week, but needed eight votes to override the mayors veto.
The legislation would have permitted bicyclists to treat a stop sign as a yield sign and ride through without stopping, at a speed 6 mph or less, if they decide it is safe.

Personally, I find Palin's voice rather charming in its unusual characteristics while I find Debbie Wasserman Schulz accent and voice to be much like the Fran Drescher in its fingernails on a blackboard quality to my ears but it is not the Schulz' voice but her ideas that I find most off putting.

I totally disagree. It's exactly how our republic is designed to work. The bulk of written documents from America when we were still a colony were lawsuits filed over pennies by farmers against one another.
We are an argumentative and litigious people and always have been. And the bureaucracy is even more unnatural for being a way to squash our right to be heard, even if what we're venting about is something stupid.
Most of essentially, you say Trump gives orders to underlings. But not because he's an aristocrat! He expects to be obeyed on his merits. He's a winner, so he's in charge. That's his whole identity. It resembles Obama's repulsive air of royalty, but it originates from a completely different place, and that makes all the difference. He knows that and is boastful about it, and it's our cultural acceptance of being ruled, rather than being led, that I believes anchors a lot of the hatred of Trump.

Didn't happen.
On F&F this morning around 8am he was asked about this and the "do you see her in your administration" question. He answered that in his convos with her she's never brought up either nor brought up any interest in either, ever, not in the past, and not presently. When pressed on the "could you see her in your admin part" he basically said yeah I would certainly consider it if was a good fit with something and she wanted to do.
She's just doing an event with him in IA this morning, and in OK later, and I think one more and then flying home, that's what he mentioned.
Maybe some Times twit tried to warp that into 'she could be vp', and some halfway sane editor pulled it. Or more likely idiots on facebook make fake links all the time to make you think their crap is real.

As someone who often rides a bicycle in the DFW metroplex, North America's least bicycle friendly urban area, let me explain.
It takes a lot more energy to start moving from a dead stop than it does from even a slight rolling movement. This is why there are not many stop signs in Europe where energy tends to be a lot more expensive and stick shifts are a lot more common than automatic transmissions. The Europeans, Germans anyway, mainly use yield signs and yellow diamonds to indicate that somebody has the right of way. That way drivers don't have to stop if the road is clear and by not stopping, they burn less expensive gasoline and don't have to do the whole clutch and run through the gears from a dead stop. On a bicycle, all the energy comes from your legs so that considerations of what takes more effort becomes very apparent to you.
The roads and traffic signs in the United States are set up for people driving cars with large engines and automatic transmissions. This makes them less than optimal for people operating any other kind of vehicle.
Now, I avoid riding a bicycle in traffic because I am well aware of who is going to lose if we both try to occupy the same space. I am also aware that a significant fraction of drivers are not even giving the minimum attention to their driving that they ought to be. Some bicycle riders choose to ride in traffic and many of them deliberately behave in ways that will get them noticed, even if it also pissed off drivers because being noticed helps a lot in not getting killed. I don't do this and I don't condone it but I do understand why they are doing it.

Yes it was - the Sinaloa Cartel. There is an excellent British documentary on the whole sordid deal. The US DOJ/ATF/FBI worked with the Sinaloa cartel to get intel on the other cartels. They basically armed Chapo's cartel with no intent to track where or what those weapons were used for.
Men, women, children and a US Border Patrol agent have all been victims of these weapons. Of course the DOJ denies this and Obama executed executive privilege to prevent the truth from coming out but a judge just yesterday shut that down so maybe - finally it will all come out.

When there is some other road that can be taken, it is usually a good idea to go a few miles out of your way to avoid that situation but when there is no alternative, for example when there is a bridge over a river and that is the only route, it is actually safer to ride in the middle of the lane, pissing off every driver behind you, than to ride on the six inch wide edge of the road with the sewer grates, unswept sand and gravel and uncollected dead animals while oblivious women driving SUVs while texting wander all over and out of their lane (speaking from personal experience there).
While I personally wish that I could pedal my bicycle at 60 miles per hour up hill, sadly, I cannot.

I am also aware that a significant fraction of drivers are not even giving the minimum attention to their driving that they ought to be. Most of the stop signs in place were in place long before automatic transmissions became commonplace in the mid-1950's. And in newer communities, built later, they simply continued the signage practices that were already in place; hierarchy of roads, etc. I'm sorry but your theory that transmission choice influences road design just doesn't hold water.

I don't really think it's zero sum like that. There's a combination of factors at play.
During the second world war, for example, wartime demand made manufacturing boom. Sewing machine factories were converted to rifle factories, and the constraints of the existing manufacturing infrastructure resulted in new factories being built as well.
Technology advances much faster in wartime, as your life literally depends on it.
The change in labor force participation was dramatic. Men wanted to fight, were required to fight, and those who didn't had lots of jobs to choose from with that new manufacturing demand, which also drew women into the workforce.
Furthermore, political boundaries were redrawn, old debts could be covered in ways they couldn't during peacetime (let us use your airbases and we'll wipe out your debt), and whole nations dissolved or arose overnight.
That's all in addition to seizures of natural resources, exploration and production being ramped up, and territory being annexed.
Having large swaths of your male population wiped out leads to lots of class mobility as militaries and governments look for anyone to fill the gap.
Then everybody gets their fuck on with a realness when they get home.
The downside is everything else you ever read about the second world war.

I think the first stop sign was created in the 1920's, when motorized vehicles became more widespread and intersection accidents were on the rise. Streets still had horses and carriages combined with steam and gas powered vehicles and the ensuing chaos necessitated stop signs and other traffic directives.

There's a saying that the best cure for low/high oil prices is low/high oil prices. In other words, the market corrects itself. In a year or two when oil is back to $60, we're going to have the "oh my god, these high oil prices are going to kill the economy" freak outs.

I'm not sure what you mean by "ethanol farmers". The farmers I spoke of sell corn by the bushel at market prices to the ethanol plants.

I was under the impression Stabil was used mostly for storage of gas , like in a tank over the winter.

Don't skip over this: ethanol does not in itself damage engine "internals." The big waste is that no one is setting up engines to take advantage of its strong points. You need a variable, sensing supercharger, or diesel-level compression ratio, to get any real bang out of it. As we use it now, we're just burning it to get rid of it.

Speaking of which...... I have a twenty year old string trimmer that runs without a hitch. I havent so much as changed a sparkplug in that engine.
However, I have a newer B&S mower and a B&S leaf blower I am forever taking apart and cleaning bowls and carbs and such because of surging.
In the name of "reducing emissions" the small engine are being force to run very lean. The fuel orifices are incredibly tiny and any foreign debris get hung up and starves the engine of fuel, requiring a manual "rinse" on my part.
In addition to Jessie Ventura.... I also hate green weanies.

Local newspaper?) but became disillusioned after the person he reported to kept changing the temps he was reporting. Any mandate sucks, but I see the reason ethanol keeps getting the nod, is even DC sees the importance of stability in farm markets. When we see what (largely Saudi caused?) instability in oil markets has done to land drillers, we see definitely don't want that for our food production system.
Farmers overproduce and don't organize under a union like teachers, cops, etc. A little support for corn (subsidies ended, it is mostly just the mandate now) helps stabilize farmers and all those Deere and CAT jobs, all those seed dealers, fertilizer guys, and so on.
I remember the late 90's and oil was run down under $10 (in old dollars), and land drillers were driven out. Companies like CHV had capital to continue exploring based on future $17 hopes ... then we get the boom and fracking, now "they" are wiping those guys out. On a global basis it may constrain Russia and others, or just destabilize them and lead to chaos ...idk.
That Paul Craig Roberts thing at Zero Hedge ... he strikes me as having gone a little over the edge, but things have gone pretty crazy when we have a criminal like Clinton having a good shot at POTUS. All the devils are here.

The Feds used to look to maintain crop prices at a level that set a certain standard of living for a farmer with X number of acres.
With OPEC trying to kill the fracking business, what the Feds should do is declare a freeze on new drilling loans but also declare a freeze on debt payments by the drilling companies until the price hits a certain amount. OPEC can't keep this up forever and buying some time for the drillers is smart economic warfare.

The heat of combustion of ethanol is far lower than that of gasoline, so there's simply less energy contained in a gallon of ethanol blend than in a gallon of dino juice. Yes you can tune an engine to run well on it, but you will, of necessity, use more to maintain the same power output.
Having said that, and looking at the political side of things, I would suggest that the ethanol racket is so entrenched right now that it is not only futile, but actually counter-productive for any GOP prospect to campaign against it. Why hand the opposition a club with which to beat you?

Seems like this would be a good time to introduce an oil import tax "to help balance the budget" or "to pay for school improvements" or "for the children" or whatever. Better still would be a NAFTA oil tax on oil imported from outside the NAFTA countries.
This would create a more stable energy environment in the United States and insulate American frackers from Saudi mischief. It would also effectively lower the price of oil even more everywhere else in the world like Russia, Iran and Venezuela.

Depends on if you count Texas as the eastern most western state or the southern most midwestern state. Or maybe the westernmost southern state.
In any event, we don't have much land owned by the feral gummint and that seems to work out pretty well for us. I think those states where the feds own large chunks of the real estate would be a whole lot better off if that land was in the private sector.

yeah, the frackers saved us from Obama moratoriums. Energy and food are national defense issues. I argue for gas pipelines along with ethanol support (really corn surplus support). We need to look at global economy as war, more than "free trade" with all the little children of the world, as if they all just want world peace and love.
I still think it's feasible we will come up with crops better than corn for making ethanol. And fracking has been awesome as a buffer against higher prices, but not at these prices. Many say we still have a LOT of oil all around our coasts, where drilling is not allowed. China was said to be drilling not far off Florida in some deal with Cuba ... I lost track of that thing. CA wants a bailout, but says no to offshore drilling, even at $100/brl.
"Make America Great Again" means treating economics more like warfare. Too bad the globalists are so entrenched. Trump seems most will to fight for US first, and tough choices are coming. He seems best at rallying crowds, but there is a lot of hate. viva la revolucion! lol

I don't seem to have it bookmarked, but at one point there were circuit breakers set at -7%, -14% and -20% of the previous day's close, but they were revised within the last year and I forget if those were before or after numbers.
The first two led to brief stops (I think half an hour and an hour) but didn't apply during the last two hours of trading. The last would lead to a halt for the day.
But there will be screaming all over the place before you hit that last one on a single day.

One of the hardest carbs I ever had to work on was in an IH tractor. Everything, everything was iron. IH could really machine cast iron. But those cast-in hidden air passages in the carb body, damn, they didn't want to boil out. I think water was a factor in that, too.
If you've had British motocycles, or an early E model Jaguar, you'll know that certain designers presumed you would completely drain all fuel from the entire fuel system after each use. We abused them by taking them out in the real world.
Brits used an alcohol fuel-replacer called "Benzol" right through the old-time high performance era. The formula was either lost, or secret. A barge of it was recetly found in a shallow part of Lake Erie, and of course The Press presumed it to be benzene, quite a problem since that's a high-distillate carcinogen that goes poof! here, and is just plain old gasoline in Germany. So, heads are spinning.

You're not going to have millions of urban youths moving out to the middle of nowhere to become farmers. You'll end up buying that land for $100 an acre when they run out of patience, while the federal government will no longer own it, and we all get to toss reparations in the over and done with column.

It is not your land. The land belongs to the feral gummint. Once the land is given away to private citizens, it will be fully under the control of the individual owners and the state within who's borders it lies. I would think you would be happy with that.

I solved my problems by driving 30 miles out of my way to fill up several gas cans with non-ethanol gas (sold at a premium, of course), enough to last 2 seasons of yard work.
My el-cheapo Ryobi string trimmer/leaf blower lasted 18 years because it NEVER saw ethanol. My neighbors have bought new about every 5 years.

I'm going to be contrary here and ask: what's wrong with that? They don't vote for Supreme Court members. They aren't supposed to be represented by 'their' Supreme Court representative. Most of the Justices were appointed before the latest college grads were even *born*. And the vast majority of college grads are never going to argue anything in front of the Supreme Court, or even hire a lawyer *to* argue anything in front of the Supreme Court for them. Why should they memorize the SCOTUS members? Why is this any better than memorizing, say, the genealogy of the Biblical patriarchs? Adam, Seth, Enos, Kenon, Mahalalel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, Noah - vs - Scalia, Kennedy, Thomas, Ginsburg, Breyer, Roberts, Alito, Sotomayor, Kagan.
